Recently reconnected with her first love - songwriting - Canadian Country artist, Jackie Guy releases her latest tune, “Damned If I Do” to radio. With Rich McFarlane behind the board, “Damned If I Do” is one of Guy’s strongest tracks to date with its clever lyrical twists and a hook that will stick in your head for days. “Damned If I Do” should see well deserved national chart action for Jackie Guy. “Damned If I Do” is available on DMDS. Three singles from that album earned national radio airplay and made the Top Ten Most Active Indies Chart, while also making Headstarter of the Week twice on the Canadian Trax Report. Guy found she could hold her own amongst the best country music artists and with an invitation from Sirroma Entertainment to perform during 2012 CCMA week, along with a SaskMusic Live Webcast Showcase, Jackie made her confident return to the stage. This led to being Master of Ceremonies at the Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis Grits ’n’ Glamour tour stop in Yorkton, to appearing as
In January 2015, Guy released My Red Guitar, produced by Rich McFarlane (SCMA Guitar Player of The Year) and recorded at Mosaic Music in Prince Albert. In support of this album, Guy performed to a sold-out crowd at the Painted Hand Casino and made a series of casino appearances throughout the province. She debuted her single “Bridges” at the prestigious 2015 SCMA President’s Banquet and through her strong social media presence, Guy’s album caught the attention of Nashville producer Dean Miller. In August 2015, with encouragement from Miller and the boost of an Indiegogo campaign, Guy was able to make her Nashville dream a reality. SABRINA WHYATT “LOVE WRAPPED UP IN A SONG” Sabrina was born and raised in St. Carol’s, a tiny outport community in Northern Newfoundland. Her father was a fisherman and her mother worked at the local fish plant. Music was a constant in the Whyatt household, and at an early age, Sabrina starting writing and performing songs for anyone who would listen. Whether it was raising funds to build a church or entertaining at community events, Sabrina never passed on an opportunity to sing. By age 10, Sabrina and her father were the go-to musical acts for local events. By age 18, Sabrina released her first album, a cassette tape of 10 original songs. With the help of her family, she sold about a thousand copies by going door to door. After graduating high school, Sabrina studied journalism and went on to enjoy a successful decade-long career as a newspaper reporter, editor, and publisher, and eventually became a broadcast journalist. In the late nineties, Sabrina’s father surprised everyone when he invited his youngest daughter to come work on his fishing boat as a deckhand, alongside him, and his brothers. Even more surprising to everyone, Sabrina accepted. In a few short years, Sabrina went from being a crewmember to purchasing her father’s fishing boat and then expanding to create a small fleet of fishing enterprises, thus carving her own place in the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery. Sabrina went back to college where she earned her Class 4 Fishing Masters making her a certified Sea Captain. Throughout her successful careers in journalism and in the fishery, music kept calling her. In 2011, Sabrina released her second album titled That’s Me. Her first single of that album landed on the American AC Top 40 Charts. In 2012, Sabrina landed a distribution deal from Maple Music and released her third album titled
Home In A Song. In its debut week, it was amoung the top ten best selling country music albums in Canada. That same year, Sabrina’s life as a singer and fish harvester was documented in a television docu-series called Sabrina Whyatt – Blazing Trails, that aired on NTV. She has also been featured on CBC, CMT, and in Chatelaine Magazine, and has graced the cover of The Newfoundland Herald, the province’s entertainment magazine. Sabrina’s music fuses the open heart of a country singer with a rock ‘n’ roll energy, all against the backdrop of that traditional Newfoundland and Labrador toe-tapping charm, which makes for a truly unique and enjoyable musical experience. Depending on the song, Sabrina’s music will either move you to tears or move you to dance. ‘LOVE WRAPPED UP IN A SONG’ Sabrina is a musical storyteller, and her songs are sprinkled with an autobiographical flavour. From the adventures of her life as a fisherwoman to the heartbreak of a grandfather swept out to sea, this Newfoundland and Labrador singer/songwriter wears her heart on her lyric sheet. Her newest single is no exception. The lyrics of “Love Wrapped Up In A Song” are like pages ripped from her diary. For the past few months, the granddaughter of Sabrina’s long-time employee and close friend has been fighting cancer. Not knowing what to do, Sabrina channeled that feeling of helplessness into a song.
“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always sending people love. If someone is mean, I send them love. If someone is struggling, I send them love. If someone is celebrating something, I send them love. It’s my thing,” explained Sabrina. It was only natural for Sabrina to express that sentiment through music. “Megan was going through this extreme amount of pain and suffering and being so brave every single day, and there was nothing I could do. I wanted her to know I was sending her love, prayers, and healing thoughts every single day. So, I thought why not wrap it up in a song and give it to her, and make her feel super special, which she is,” said Sabrina. Sabrina recorded “Love Wrapped Up In A Song” and brought it to Megan’s hospital room on her 12th birthday, May 11, with a special invitation for her to be music video director for a day. ““I’ve known Megan since she was two. She’s grown up with my music. She knows every single word to every song I’ve ever written. She loves making music videos on her phone. So, I decided she had to be part of making a video for her song.”
The decision to record this song for Megan was an easy one, but releasing it to radio was a whole different story. “This song comes from such an emotionally raw place, and it’s so pure, I wasn’t sure I wanted to share it with the public. Because it’s such a special project for me and for Megan, I feel very protective of it. I feel quite vulnerable with this release,” explains Sabrina. Megan, her mother, and grandmother were so moved and excited by the song, they encouraged Sabrina to share it with the public in hopes of lifting someone else’s spirits who may be going through a similar experience. “That’s just who they are. Despite all they’re going through, they’re still thinking about brightening someone else’s day.” The music video for “Love Wrapped Up In A Song” will be shot as soon as music video director Megan Murphy is out of hospital and well enough to join the team.

They’re what sets him apart.” said Tom Harrison, Vancouver Province music columnist who wrote a review of Tommy West on January 29, 2017. Tommy will be our cover story next week. Watch for it!
Tareya “Summer Wheels” Country music star Tareya has been scaling the heights of the Canadian music industry since 2012, with multiple JUNO and CCMA award nominations and chart topping singles earned through her former popular country duo, Autumn Hill. With her debut single, “Summer Wheels”, Tareya is exploring the edges of her music roots. This dashboard drumming cruise tune is a celebration of her romance-filled introduction to southern beaches and her love for a man who digs classic cars
Marco Sylver “Summer Life” It’s an honest love of music that has led Marco Sylver to where he is today. In 2016, he opened Beach Blast in New Brunswick where Florida Georgia Line headlined. Throughout his youth, his love of bluegrass music and singing at family functions led him to fronting a bluegrass band for six years. Together they released two albums and toured across Quebec and the Maritimes. After taking a break from music, the oil industry lead him out west to Alberta where he began playing music again. Opportunities began popping up and he landed opening slots for the likes of Travis Tritt and the Charlie Daniels Band. His smoky, rich tone placed him in the Top Six at the Calgary Stampede Nashville North Star competition. Marco is currently living in Calgary, surrounded by one of Canada’s largest country music scenes as he releases his debut single to Canadian country radio.
Doc Yates “Hometown” Doc Yates - Doctor by day... Country Front Man by night! Doc Yates was raised on a small farm in the outskirts of Woodstock ON. Son of a large animal vet and brought up on a road where three generations of the Yates family have been born and raised. Doc comes from a long line of storytellers, so writing music came very naturally to him. Singing was another talent discovered as he grew up “I used to sing in a small church choir as a kid, but I was the only kid that didn’t get to hold a microphone” says Doc. Now his “rootsy” soulful voice is the emphasis for many of the songs. “When I was a kid the first song that ever made an impression on me was ‘The House of the Rising Sun’. A few years ago when I was given an old microphone I went out to the shed and tried to sing it and I kept pushing my voice to see what it could do and it surprised me.” The first album is about to be released with 8 songs which were picked from Doc’s original song library of over 70 songs and counting. “Songwriting is a very important part of my life but it does come to me naturally. I do a lot of driving and outdoor work and when I am doing that, the songs just come to me. I couldn’t stop this process as it seems to be automatic” explains Yates. “If I am driving 2 hours or more, than I will most likely have a song done by the time I arrive”. Doc’s music is a reflection of his experiences, his country upbringing and sometimes unique stories that he hears from patients during the day, “If there is something weighing on my heart or mind and I’m driving, then that will become my next song”.
Samara Yung “Fireproof ” Samara Yung’s new single proves her rise on the Canadian country music scene. Produced by Danick Dupelle, this release proves Samara’s chops both in picking hit songs and delivering them. WAYLON: Tales of My Outlaw Dad Throughout his celebrated career, Outlaw country-music icon Waylon Jennings released over fifty studio albums and collaborated with some of the biggest titans in the industry like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. While he enjoyed platinum records, overwhelming critical acclaim, sold-out tours, and an overzealous fan base, his success was sometimes overshadowed by personal struggles including addiction, multiple divorces, and depression stemming from the premature death of his best friend Buddy Holly. In WAYLON: Tales of My Outlaw Dad (Hachette Books; May 9, 2017) Waylon’s eldest son and long-time roadie Terry Jennings gives an exceptional behind-the scenes look into one of country music’s most legendary and notorious figures. Born when Waylon was only nineteen, Terry and Waylon were more like brothers than father and son.
Terry grew up with a front-row seat to Waylon’s reckless lifestyle and was often an enthusiastic participant. In WAYLON Terry details his life on tour working with the crew, managing Waylon’s career and ultimately becoming his closest confidante. Despite this close relationship, tour rules still reigned. More than once, Terry lost a girlfriend to his father and ultimately found himself nursing a drug habit that eclipsed even Waylon’s. Already lauded by Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Keith Urban, WAYLON is a strikingly honest, loving portrait of a unique father-son relationship that debunks myths and shares dozens of never-before-told stories. The book will resonate with generations of country music fans.
