The Beaver celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in the autumn of 1980. The first featured article in this issue is “Eskimo Life A Cen¬tury Ago,” by Margaret Mead. The distinguished American anthropologist had originally written this story as a chapter of a children’s book, drawing heavily upon scientist Franz Boas’ first systematic study of Inuit culture in 1883. Through words and photographs, she doc¬umented the Inuit of Cumberland Sound, whose mode of living remained relatively unchanged until after World War II.
