V CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL BC PLACE - VANCOUVER, BC
29 JUNE 2016 - 22.00 ET / 19.00 PT TSN1 - TSN3 - TSN4 - TSN5
CANADA SOCCER On behalf of Canada Soccer, I would like to congratulate the five professional teams on their performances in the ninth edition of the Amway Canadian Championship. I would also like to thank them for making 2016 another successful year for the tournament. We look forward to crowning this year’s George Gross Trophy winner as MVP of the competition and to seeing the 2016 winner lift the Voyageurs Cup on Wednesday 29 June at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. The quality and intensity of this year’s Amway Canadian Championship is an exciting indication of the clubs’ development as they establish themselves in their respective markets. Equally as important is the development of young, impactful Canadian players that have made their mark in each round of play. The level of play has never been higher and it is clear that the Amway Canadian Championship is a maturing as domestic cup competition, which bodes well for the future growth of the Championship and soccer in Canada. We would also like to thank our partners – title partner Amway, Allstate, Bell and Garnier - for their support in growing the beautiful game in our country. We expect a terrific contest between this year’s finalists from Vancouver and Toronto, with the final match to be broadcast live from BC Place across the nation on all TSN stations. Best of luck to both of this year’s finalists.

SCENARIO FOR EXTRA TIME
For the second leg on 29 June, only a Vancouver 1:0 win can force extra time. Otherwise, if both teams score the same number of goals over both legs, the team with the most away goals is determined the winner (which could only be Toronto). If, during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, the away goals will count as double in favour of the visiting team (Toronto). If no goals are scored during extra time, then kicks from the penalty mark (in accordance with FIFA Laws of the Game) will be used to determine the winner.

The Trail of the Voyageurs Cup In its short history, the Amway Canadian Championship has delivered plenty of excitement to the national soccer scene. Inaugurated in 2008, the series crowns a Canadian champion that equally qualifies for the confederation’s elite club competition, CONCACAF Champions League. The Canadian winner also takes home the Voyageurs Cup, a remarkable national trophy that was donated by Canadian supporters, the Voyageurs. The 2016 winner will be crowned in Vancouver on 29 June, with reigning winners Vancouver Whitecaps FC facing four-time champions Toronto FC. This marks the third time these two sides have met in the final, with Toronto winning the match up in both 2011 and 2012. Before there was a national final, the first three years of the competition featured a roundrobin format. In 2008, Toronto were upset on Canada Day by visiting Vancouver, 1:0 winners on a Martin Nash penalty. Then after a draw in Vancouver eight days later, Toronto lost the Championship on points after a 1:1 draw with Montréal. Roberto Brown scored the series winner while goalkeeper Matt Jordan collected the George Gross Memorial Trophy as most valuable player of the Championship. In 2009, Toronto again stumbled against Vancouver, with this time an Ansu Touré brace building a sizeable advantage in goal difference in the standings. With the round-robin format, Vancouver watched from the sidelines as Toronto faced a four-goal challenge in the series finale. Unbelievably, MVP Dwayne De Rosario inspired a 6:1 victory with a hat trick in Montréal as Toronto won their first championship. In 2010, there was no stumble as Toronto won the title with one match to spare. Incidentally, both Toronto and Vancouver completed the Championship undefeated, albeit Vancouver did so without any wins on the table (four straight draws). De Rosario was again MVP of the Championship. At last in 2011, there was a new entry as FC Edmonton spurred a head-to-head format for the four teams. Edmonton lost their series to Toronto, while Vancouver squeezed by Montréal on a Mouloud Akloul series winner in extra time. The final opened with a 1:1 draw at Empire Stadium, but the return leg was postponed until six weeks later. Vancouver’s Camilo Sanvezzo opened the scoring with a stunning free kick at BMO Field, but then Toronto’s MVP Joao Plata equalised on a penalty and set up Mikael Yourassowsky for the winner in a third-straight Toronto title win. In 2012, Vancouver eliminated Edmonton in one semi-final series while Toronto beat Montréal in the other. In the final, Toronto opened the scoring at Vancouver’s new home BC Place, but Eric Hassli scored a “rocket” of an equaliser in added time. In the return leg, it was Toronto once again as they won 1:0 and lifted the Voyageurs Cup for a fourth time. Reggie Lambe scored the winner and Ryan Johnson won MVP honours.

CHAMPIONNAT CANADIEN AMWAY 2016
In 2013, the same teams met in the semi finals, with Vancouver again beating Edmonton, but Montréal eliminating Toronto on the strength of a Marco Di Vaio brace (coupled with a pair of assists in a 6:0 win). The final started with a 0:0 draw in Montréal, followed by a Camilo free kick beauty in the opening five minutes of the return leg at BC Place. The 2013 final went back and forth, with Montréal ultimately winning the title on a Hassoun Camara header less than six minutes from full time. In 2014, new entry Ottawa Fury FC joined via a preliminary round, but they were eliminated by Edmonton. In the semi finals, captain Patrice Bernier saved Montréal with a last-minute penalty winner against Edmonton, who nearly advanced on the road. After Toronto’s Jermain Defoe and Vancouver’s Pedro Morales kept the other series even on alternate weeks, kicks from the penalty mark were required to determine the series winner at BC Place. Toronto came out on top, perfect from the spot while goalkeeper Joe Bendik made one save to help win the series. In the 2014 final, Toronto took the lead, but Montréal equalised in an away 1:1 draw. In the return leg one week later, Montréal were set to win the title with a scoreless draw, but scored for good measure in the dying moments on a Felipe Martins winner. Montréal were back-to-back champions, with star Justin Mapp the MVP for a second year in a row. In 2015, Vancouver eliminated FC Edmonton with an added time winner from Matías Laba, while Montréal eliminated Toronto FC in the other series with a Dominic Oduro winner just six minutes from time. In the final, Vancouver built a 2-0 lead on the road, but saw it quickly disappear after Montréal scored two goals just a minute apart. All four goals were scored within a 20-minute span. In the return leg two weeks later, however, Vancouver scored two more unanswered, thus winning the series 4-2 and lifting the Voyageurs Cup for the first time in franchise history. In 2016, Ottawa Fury FC reached the semi finals for the first time, but were eliminated by Vancouver in one series at the start of June. Ottawa won 2:0 at home, but then lost 0:3 on the road at BC Place. In the other series, Toronto FC won the first leg 4:2, then won the series after an 0:0 draw in Montréal.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC
TRAIL OF THE VOYAGEURS CUP Vancouver Whitecaps FC won their first Voyageurs Cup in 2015, knocking off Impact Montréal FC to the delight of their home crowd at BC Place. Since the debut of the Amway Canadian Championship in 2008, Vancouver have finished runners up five times, twice as runners up in round-robin action (2009 and 2010 behind Toronto FC) and three times fallen in the final (2011 and 2012 to Toronto; 2013 to Montréal). Building on the momentum of 2015, Whitecaps hope to win a second title in 2016.
2016 AMWAY CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP Vancouver Whitecaps FC reached the final in 2016 after defeating Ottawa Fury FC in a two-leg series. Vancouver lost 0:2 on the road, but then won the series after a 3:0 win at home. Ottawa won the first match on goals from Jonny Steele and Paulo Júnior. A week later, Vancouver won at home on goals from their South American contingent, Pedro Morales, Nicolás Mezquida, and Octavio Rivero.

“THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING!”
ERIC HASSLI ROCKET IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC “Oh, goodness, Eric Hassli,” bellowed broadcaster Gerry Dobson. “What a rocket to make it 1-1 and it changes everything!” Indeed, it was a goal for the ages, one that prompted colour commentator and former goalkeeper Craig Forrest to respond, “are you kidding me? Absolutely fantastic!” In the moment, the Hassli goal was an added-time equaliser for Vancouver Whitecaps FC, although Toronto FC ultimately had their revenge a week later in winning the 2012 Amway Canadian Championship. In time, the goal was selected as one of the top-10 goals on the planet in voting for the 2012 Puskás Award.
ALLSTATE GOOD HANDS AWARD The Allstate Good Hands Award is a fan-driven vote to determine the #GoodHands save of the Amway Canadian Championship. The top five saves from the preliminary and semifinal rounds are selected to face off against each other in the week leading up to the second leg of the final series. The save with the most votes will be recognized with the Allstate Good Hands Award at the last match of the Championship.
