The show that changed daytime

For better or worse (my vote is for the latter), there’s no denying the landscape of daytime television was forever transformed by The Jerry Springer Show, a televised parade of oddities where fistfights became so commonplace that security guards stood onstage (one of whom, Steve Wilkos, went on to host his own copycat talk show).

A new two-part docuseries peels back the curtain for an inside look at how the show became what it was. The story began in 1991, with former Cincinnati mayor Jerry Springer launching a garden-variety syndicated chatfest with a focus on politics and current events. Viewers snoozed and ratings tanked. As cancellation loomed, producer Richard Dominick decided to take some big swings by booking bonkers guests, such as a guy who left his wife and family to marry a horse. That strategy worked like a charm, and set the template for the next two-plus decades: the nuttier the guests, the higher the ratings. More akin to pro wrestling than daytime talk, the series became (as described in a Netflix press release) “a televised circus tent where every act was an over-the-top melodrama featuring love triangles, secret siblings and the occasional flying chair.”

Dominick is one of many Springer Show insiders who spill about the eventual toll that was exacted by that relentless quest for ratings at all costs. “I don’t think anybody knew how crazy this show was gonna be,” noted former producer Toby Yoshimura, while another producer described the series as “the modern version of the Roman Colosseum.”

The documentary includes a brief clip of Springer — who died of pancreatic cancer in 2023 — offering a tongue-in-cheek apology. “I want to take this opportunity to apologize for everything I’ve ever done,” he deadpanned. “I have ruined the culture.”

It really was a trip to watch Paris & Nicole: The Encore! Are they doing any other series?

R.H., Coquitlam

By all accounts, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton’s three-part Simple Life reunion (aired in December on Slice and streamer Hayu) was a one-off. That being said, in an exciting bit of news, sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning (whom you’ll remember from Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood and A Complete Unknown) have purchased the rights to Hilton’s book Paris: The Memoir with an eye towards creating a TV series based on her life. In addition to producing, one of the siblings will also play Paris . . . but reportedly, they haven’t quite decided which one yet!

ALL TALK-ED OUT?

Just wondering why they cancelled The Talk? I’d say it was my favourite of all the [daytime shows].

J.D., Burnaby

Yes, the bubbly CBS chat show capped off its 15-season run in December, as hosts Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Natalie Morales bid fans a bittersweet so long.

The exact reasons for the cancellation were not given,

but industry pundits point to the challenging economics of a shifting media landscape as the likely culprit.

Per TVLine, CBS has been working with the NAACP on a new daytime soap called The Gates to fill The Talk ’s timeslot at some point in the near future. The show will focus on a wealthy Black family “living in a posh, gated community.”

Eulogizing their dearly departed chat show, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and CBS Studios president David Stapf said in a joint statement: “The Talk broke new ground

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS!

My top superhero show on TV is, no doubt, The Boys. But I heard they’re going to cancel it. Is that the case?

D.K., Victoria

Unfortunately, despite this sly comic book satire’s continued popularity, creator Eric Kripke has opted to wrap up the battle between megalomaniacal superhero team The Seven and scrappy vigilantes The Boys after the upcoming fifth season. That season only just started filming in late November, so don’t expect to see it back on Prime Video till 2026.

Season five will witness the return of fan-favourite Jensen Ackles as a series regular. His unhinged Captain America parody Soldier Boy sat out season four (with the character literally put on ice), but he’ll be back in action for the end game. What’s more, his return sets the table for a spinoff prequel called Vought Rising, featuring Ackles’ Soldier Boy and his fellow ageless crusader/secret Nazi, Stormfront (Aya Cash). Announcing the news at San Diego Comic-Con, Kripke and producer Paul Grellong teased:

“It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy and the diabolical manoeuvres of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought. We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V.”

Meanwhile, the franchise’s college-set spinoff Generation V is gearing up for its second semester at a date still TBD.

Jerry Lewis still resonates as one of my movie heroes from my teen years, and I remember The Delicate Delinquent as his first film without Dean Martin. Whose decision was it exactly to have Lewis star on his own?

L.B., Burnaby

The Delicate Delinquent (1957) was a movie that marked many firsts. As you point out, it was Lewis’ first film without partner Dean Martin. It was also the first big-screen effort that Jerry Lewis had a hand in writing and producing. All told, it had a budget of $400,000 and brought in over $7 million at the box office, turning Lewis into a bankable asset on both sides of the camera.

The film’s story, as you probably recall, casts Lewis as a character named Sydney L. Pythias, a janitor who is on the verge of breaking bad. A police officer named Mike Damon (Darren McGavin) sees Sydney as an errant could-be gang member, and sets up a plan to save the bumbling young man from himself. Over the course of the movie, not only does Officer Damon put Sydney back on the straight and narrow, he helps him get into the police academy to begin a career in law enforcement.

As for the “Martin & Lewis” of it all, the duo had been a hit on the nightclub circuit for more than a decade, and had made 17 movies that were all successful financially. The story behind Martin’s departure from Delinquent is amusingly simple: he refused to play a uniformed police officer. Thus, it was McGavin’s time to shine.

The cop and the con woman return for season two. But the uneasy partnership between Det. Cole Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti) and Max Mitchell (Vanessa Morgan) is trending away from the fun, flirty vibes they built up over season one after Max and her imprisoned dad George (Jason Priestley) plotted to go behind Cole’s back, using one of his cases as an opportunity to steal the coveted “Imperial egg.” As fans will recall, Max was seconds away from leaving town with a fortune, when she came across a recording that could lead to the man who

killed Cole’s brother. In the end, loyalty trumped the payday, and Max decided to stick around, bringing the evidence to her partner.

Yet, as we open on season two, Cole is still feeling the sting of her betrayal, and has no interest in continuing their arrangement. Luckily for Max (and for us viewers), Commissioner Russo (Karin Konoval) does, given that each case they crack is a boon for her mayoral campaign. In tonight’s premiere, she assigns the duo to go undercover, Fast & Furious-style, to take down a drag-racing stickup crew. The 100 alum Marie Avgeropoulos guest-stars.

In 1994, a little show called ER debuted on NBC, launching the careers of such soon-to-be luminaries as George Clooney and Julianna Margulies, while reinventing the genre itself — showing us a more authentic, character-driven approach to the medical drama.

Thirty years later, ER showrunner John Wells and one of the series’ original cast members, Noah Wyle, reunite to try and push the boundaries just a little bit further with a hospital thriller that takes place in real time.

Debuting with two episodes on Crave this Thursday, The Pitt is described as “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each episode follows an hour of Dr. Robby’s [Wyle] 15-hour shift as the chief attendant in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s emergency room.”

Besides Wyle, the ensemble includes Isa Briones (Star Trek:

), Fiona Dourif (Chucky) and Taylor Dearden (For All Mankind ) — daughter of the great Bryan Cranston Appearing on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Wyle discussed what spurred his return to the genre that launched his career: “When I wasn’t working [during the pandemic], I didn’t feel good about myself. I didn’t feel like I had any skills that were really valued during that period of time. It really bothered me a lot that I wasn’t contributing in any meaningful way, which is where this idea for this show that I’m doing now came from. It was a desire to put the spotlight back on to people that are on the frontlines, who have been taking care of us for the last five years without a break. They’re tired, they’re burned out and they’re overwhelmed — and in a lot of cases, they’re being abused. They’re heroes, and I wanted to do something that reflected that again.” THE PITT

In one of the most unlikely crossovers in TV history, the degenerates of Paddy’s Pub somehow make their way into the halls of Abbott Elementary to spar with Janine, Gregory and the rest of the faculty. Plot details are still under wraps, but creator/star Quinta Brunson has confirmed that the Abbott cast will return the favour later in 2025

by appearing on Sunny’s forthcoming 17th season, in an episode that replays the events of this one from the Paddy’s Gang POV.

As Abbott producer Patrick Schumacker told Variety: “On paper, it feels like they’d be a real tonal mishmash. But then [Sunny creators/stars Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day] came to our writers’ room and we hashed out some real broad-stroke ideas. From there, we emailed back and forth beat sheets and then an outline. They were supergame for everything. All those concerns that we had about the tones of the shows butting against each other were alleviated the second we started filming with Charlie.”

BLASI BOUNCES BACK

I AM ILARY

Thursday, Netfli

A followup to the 2023 documentary Ilary Blasi: The One and Only, this new series catches up with Italian

model, showgirl and television personality Ilary Blasi. The original doc took viewers inside her painful and headlinemaking divorce from soccer star Francesco Totti (the glamorous couple once glorified in the media as “Italy’s Beckhams”) — a split that captivated the country due to revelations of infidelity, scandalous accusations from both exes and Blasi’s tell-all book, What a Fool. Here, Blasi invites viewers to tag along as she redefines her life post-divorce, exploring her attempts at balancing personal growth, career opportunities and a new chance at love.

The First Omen

8 p.m., Crave1

In recent years, the box office has seen a cavalcade of films that fall into the newly coined genre of “elevated horror” — movies that aim for a little more than just jump-scares and gross-out gore. Think Get Out or Midsommar. But these sorts of ambitious horror pics have existed for ages, albeit in shorter supply than today. A prime

Edge of Tomorrow

12:30 p.m., CTV Sci-Fi

Tom Cruise amusingly subverts his action hero image in this sci-fi war flick. As humanity makes its last stand against a horde of alien invaders, one cowardly officer gets stuck in a time loop — living (and dying) the same day over and over (and over) again. Emily Blunt co-stars as the legendary soldier who schools him on how to become a real warrior. ★★★

example is 1976’s The Omen, and this past April, that seminal franchise returned to cash in on the genre’s current renaissance, in a media landscape that has more room for complex, character-driven tales of terror.

Set in 1971, the prequel casts Servant alum Nell Tiger Free as an American nun working at a Rome orphanage who stumbles across a conspiracy to bring about the Antichrist. ★★

Love of the Irish

8 p.m., W Network

One of the breakout stars of 2008’s 90210 reboot, Canadian actress Shenae Grimes-Beech has since carved out a niche for herself with Hallmark mysteries and romances. In her latest, she plays Fiona, a woman who is unlucky in love — and just about everything else. But that all changes when she and her mum take a fateful trip to Ireland.

Logan

6:45 p.m., CTV Sci-Fi

Despite the fact that he recently strapped the claws back on for Deadpool & Wolverine, in 2017 Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold crafted a perfect farewell for the unkillable mutant with a dark, modernday western that saw an aging Logan grapple with guilt, fatherhood and legacy. ★★★

Patriot Games

6 p.m. & 9 p.m., APTN

Taking over for Alec Baldwin following The Hunt for Red October, Harrison Ford’s first go-round as Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan finds the CIA superanalyst thwarting an attack on the Royal Family while visiting England with his family — only to wind up in the crosshairs of a vengeful IRA terrorist (Sean Bean). ★★★

Creature From the Black Lagoon

5 p.m., TCM

A classic “creature feature” from Hollywood’s golden age follows a group of scientists on an expedition to the remote wilds of the Amazon, where a humanoid fish monster takes a liking to the lone female member of their crew (Julie Adams). ★★★

Bright Victory

8:15 p.m., TCM

A U.S. Army sergeant (Arthur Kennedy) blinded on the battlefield during the Second World War lands in a military hospital, where his friendship with an African-American soldier (James Edwards) and his flirtation with a nurse (Peggy Dow) have a profound impact that lingers long after he’s sent home. ★★★

Stuart Little 2

7 p.m. & 9 p.m., YTV

Michael J. Fox is back to lend his voice to the cartoon mouse, who this time must team up with his nemesis Snowbell the Cat (Nathan Lane) for a bigcity mission to save a canary (Melanie Griffith) from falling into the talons of an evil falcon (James Woods). Hugh Laurie and Geena Davis return as Stuart’s human “parents.” ★★★

Point Break

9 p.m., AMC

Years before helming Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow made her mark on action cinema with this pulpy crime thriller about Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), a young FBI agent who sets out to infiltrate a gang of surfers turned bank robbers (led by Patrick Swayze). Before long, Johnny finds himself in too deep. ★★★

This Is Elvis

9 a.m., TCM

Released just four years after his death, this 1981 doc uses dramatic recreations to chart the rise, fall and rise again of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, as the poor Mississippi boy uses his angelic voice and indelible sex appeal to redefine pop music and take the world by storm — even as that storm threatens to destroy his life. ★★

Matilda

7 p.m. & 9 p.m., YTV

Danny DeVito directs and co-stars in this twisted coming-of-age flick adapted from the book by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory author Roald Dahl. Ubiquitous ’90s child star Mara Wilson plays Matilda, a kid who overcomes the tyranny of her abusive parents and teachers by unlocking an inner magic. ★★★

Young Frankenstein

5 p.m., TCM

Perhaps the most deftly executed parody ever committed to celluloid, Mel Brooks’ skewering of oldschool Hollywood horror casts Gene Wilder as the titular mad scientist and future Everybody Loves Raymond dad Peter Boyle as his Monster. ★★★★

Contagion

10 p.m., AMC

A decade before COVID hit, Steven Soderbergh gave us a chillingly accurate take on what a pandemic might look like, casting Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and more as an array of average citizens, health workers and opportunists grappling with a killer virus. ★★★

Green Lantern: Beware My Power

9 p.m. & 11 p.m., Cartoon Network Aldis Hodge (Alex Cross) voices one of DC Comics’ most iconic superheroes in this 2022 cartoon. Here, struggling war vet John Stewart inherits the vaunted Green Lantern ring just as the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. is decimated by a mysterious alien menace.

The Mule

8 p.m., CTV2

Once again pulling double duty as both filmmaker and leading man, Clint Eastwood plays Earl Stone, an aging horticulturist forced by tough economic realities to start working as a drug smuggler for a Mexican cartel — a move that puts him on the radar of a hard-charging DEA agent (Bradley Cooper). ★★

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Full Family Overhaul

In ABC’s new comedy, Tim Allen plays a car restorer forced to repair things with his estranged daughter (Kat Dennings) after life unexpectedly lands them back under the same roof

L-R: Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Ed, Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, Barrett Margolis as Georgia, Tim Allen as Matt and Kat Dennings as Riley.

SHIFTING GEARS

Wednesday, 8 p.m., CTV & ABC

One of the most successful leading men in the history of TV comedy returns, as Tim Allen slides back into the driver’s seat of a sitcom this Wednesday.

Shifting Gears casts the Home Improvement and Last Man Standing icon as aging Indiana widower Matt, who must rethink his curmudgeonly ways when his estranged adult daughter arrives at his door with her two teen children in tow, following a messy breakup. Suddenly, Matt’s quiet life as the owner of a classic car shop is turned topsy-turvy, forcing him to learn to take the bad with the good when it comes to repairing family relationships. Kat Dennings, best known as Max Black on the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls, takes on the role of Matt’s daughter, Riley. The actress, who in recent years found success playing researcher Darcy Lewis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor films and WandaVision TV show, returns to her sitcom daughter roots some 23 years after she landed her first recurring role as Sarah in the 2001-2002 series Raising Dad. That show, which aired on the WB Network for one season, co-starred a post-Full House Bob Saget as Dennings’ onscreen father and Dennings’ fellow MCU star Brie Larson (a.k.a. Captain Marvel) as her sister. If Shifting Gears is a show about family reunions, it’s only fitting that this project also yields several real-life reunions for the folks who are making it. Beyond the return to a familiar genre, the show brings Dennings back together with her Dollface co-star Brenda Song, who plays Caitlyn, a former classmate of Riley’s who is now an assistant principal (presumably the one overseeing Riley’s kids during school hours). Furthermore, both actresses reunite with Dollface writer and showrunner Michelle Nader, who has taken on writing and

executive producing duties for Shifting Gears. (Married Simpsons alums Mike Scully and Julie Thacker are the show’s creators.)

Likewise, Allen gets a reunion of his own, working once more with his Galaxy Quest co-star Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, who plays Ed, a former Marine who works at Matt’s car biz.

Elsewhere in the ensemble, American Pie alum Seann William Scott plays Gabriel — “a family friend of Matt and Riley who works in the shop with Matt” (per Variety). Finally, Maxwell Simkins (Bizaardvark) and newcomer Barrett Margolis play Riley’s children, Carter and Georgia.

Matt and his daughter Riley get an unexpected chance to tune up their sputtering relationship.

“I get far more enjoyment out of entertaining people than anything monetary. I love the live audience we have. I tell them every night, ‘This is old-school stuff — what television and broadcast started with.’ I don’t know the future, but this [format] is rare.”

Despite the many film opportunities he’s had over the years, sitcom work remains a favourite for Allen. “The word that keeps me alive is ‘grateful,’ ” the actor told US Weekly in 2020 when asked about his ties to the genre. “I love what I do,” he continued. “I get far more enjoyment out of entertaining people than anything monetary. I love the live audience we have. I tell them every night, ‘This is old-school stuff — what television and broadcast started with.’ I don’t know the future, but this [format] is rare.” ■

Seann William Scott as charmingly quippy family friend Gabriel.

never pummelled, now has to figure out her place in a world where she has no recollection of the people she’s crossed, the fellow doctor she’s been sleeping with or the family tragedy that, at one point, changed the course of her life.

The idea of a do-over was a fascinating prospect for series creator Barbie Kligman (Magnum P.I., Private Practice) and executive producer Hank Steinberg (The Last Ship, For Life). “It gives us the ability to explore the themes of identity and second chances,” says Steinberg. “Who am I? Am I who I remember? Is there something innate in me that will react to the same situation if I’m

presented to it twice? Or will something change?” Amy’s memory loss also has a ripple effect on the other characters in her life, like her ex-husband Dr. Michael Hamda (Omar Metwally), for whom the past eight years have left a mark. “Michael is not with Amy anymore, but now she’s back [as] the version of her that he loves,” Steinberg says. “What will that do to him? These are all very universal questions that were so interesting to us.”

The series that takes place both in the past and present creates quite the challenge for its cast. To tackle the duality of Amy, Kligman and Steinberg trusted Deadwood and House of Cards

actress Molly Parker. “You know how certain people have that thing?” Kligman muses. “She has everything. She is not only playing the softer side of Amy, the harder side of Amy, the vulnerable side of Amy, the defensive side of Amy, but she plays it all in the same moments. There are lots of talented people out there, but this was even hard to write it, in terms of making sure that [the character] wasn’t just one thing — and then Molly came in and blew us all away.”

For Parker, the key to portraying Dr. Amy Larsen was figuring out her core, first and foremost. “To me, there wasn’t an old Amy and a new Amy, they were all

the same person,” the actress explains. Alas, in the time period that Amy has forgotten, she experienced a loss so profound that it completely changed her. But the only recollection she has of the hardened person she became as a result is through the eyes of others. “She has to trust them because that’s all she has,” says Parker. “Part of how she dealt with the loss the first time around, and the grief of that, was to just shut down and

shut people out. This time, she’s given an opportunity to do it differently.”

Beyond just the high-concept hook, it is perhaps the three-dimensional ensemble around Parker that makes Doc stand out from other procedurals. Making sure that all of the characters felt fully fleshed out was no small feat for the writers. “One of the things we worked hard on was, with the pilot, making sure when you’re entering the story, the characters already feel lived-in,” says Steinberg. “You’re entering in the middle of dynamics that are already alive.” And indeed, each of the regulars who touch Amy’s life get more exposure as the show progresses. “We were very mindful about creating that tapestry, really honing in, as specifically as we can, to the characters, the situations and the dynamics,” Steinberg continues. “If you cast the right actors for the right roles, the audience can project onto them this depth.”

The series is based on an Italian drama, which in turn is based on the real-life case of a man losing 12 years to a brain injury. For both the cast and the creative team, these hypothetical circumstances have raised questions about the possibility of “sliding doors” moments of their own lives. “At the heart of our show is this question of, ‘Given another chance, what would you do differently? Would you do

anything differently?’ And I feel like that’s a fascinating question,” says Amirah Vann (How To Get Away With Murder), who plays Amy’s closest friend, neuropsychiatrist Gina Walker. “Seeing Amy live life all over again and seeing the differences, it is like, ‘I could have gone this route had I made that one different choice, had I run into that one person, had I had that one conversation that was life-changing for me.’ It could be sad, but it’s also very hopeful. We always, at any moment, have the opportunity to change the course for the better, with one conversation or one different thought.”

Newfoundland detective teams up with a French cop in

the latest crime drama from star/co-creator Allan Hawco

SAINT-PIERRE

Monday, 9 p.m., CBC

Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, the self-governing overseas territory of France tucked just off Canada’s East Coast, was an area that Newfoundland native Allan Hawco was quite familiar with. “It’s a part of our existence,” says Hawco. “It’s always kind of been there, but I’d never

really looked right at it.” A few years ago, the entertainment multitasker was in Saint-Pierre scouting locations for Son of a Critch as a producer, when he was suddenly struck by its rarity. “I looked around and I was like, ‘Oh s***, this place is magic.’ It’s truly, truly unique,” Hawco reflects. “In a world where our industry is constantly searching for unique places and unique voices, I realized that this place had never been fully exploited — in a

positive way — and the entire concept of the show hit me in those five minutes.”

The idea of a police officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary getting exiled to Saint-Pierre after a government corruption plot he is investigating lands, quite literally, too close to home, ruminated inside Hawco, dying to come out. “I obsessed over it, started writing it, pitched the CBC and they were very interested,” he explains. He then hit up Wild Cards producer Robina Lord-Stafford, whom Hawco had worked with on Moonshine, to help craft the second lead, a Black detective, originally from Paris, who is forced to pair up with Hawco’s Det. Donny “Fitz” Fitzpatrick. “Instead of being a white writer who would just say, ‘Well, it’ll be any ethnicity,’ I made a decision that we should start honing in on who these people are right from the start and I wanted someone to represent that voice,” says Hawco. “Robina and I started working together and we just seemed to share one brain on who these people were.”

But it was only when the Republic of Doyle alum started spending more time on the island that it became more apparent than ever how Saint-Pierre was a character in its own right. “It’s truly a unique, strange place in terms of why their people are there, why it exists, how it exists and how it functions,” he

marvels. “It’s got a real urban feel to it. It’s also got this extreme ruralness to it, because it’s quite difficult to get to. It’s removed from the rest of the world. It’s also extremely cosmopolitan. It has all these Europeans that are living there throughout different parts of the year. It’s

got its own culture, its own identity. So, we leaned into that.”

At the centre of the story are Fitz and his new partner, Geneviève “Arch” Archambault, two people who have landed at the edge of the world while running from their own demons. “The concept of the show is how the universe conspires for Arch and Fitz to be forced into a situation of working together, getting to know each other and ultimately becoming almost soulmates in a way,” says Hawco. “It’s like they were destined to be on that island together, at that time.”

While Hawco is technically No. 1 on the call sheet, he credits his French co-star Joséphine Jobert with being a great co-leader on set — so much so that he insisted on sharing top billing with the

French actress. “I was like, ‘We should be sharing our [title] card because it’s a twoheader show.’ That show is about us,” he says. “She could care less if her name was on the screen. She has no ego. She’s an incredible person. And I feel like that’s where the work starts for me — it’s about showing up and having the best possible time you could have doing it.”

Saint-Pierre wouldn’t have a lingering air of danger without a big bad, who in the first season is played by Rome star James Purefoy. Although the British actor has a vast résumé, Hawco asserts he is as much of a team player as the rest. “The goal is to be working with people who did what they had to do to get there, and then they throw it away to do the

scene with you,” he says. “That’s what my core cast does. And someone like James, I mean, he is incredible. He’s a worldclass talent. What an absolute honour to be able to share the floor with him. But he doesn’t walk around an ‘international sensation.’ He’s just an actor. He’s a really hardworking actor. He’s a great guy.”

Yet, in the end, even a global star like Purefoy plays second fiddle to the sunsets of Saint-Pierre, which take centre stage. “Its position in the world creates the most dynamic light effect. It feels like at any moment throughout any part of the day, you’re in dusk — it’s like the sky touches the ground,” says Hawco. “It’s such a uniquely interesting and ruggedly beautiful place. It just was screaming at me. We were screaming at each other, I guess.” ■

Friday Night Lights producer Peter Berg reteams with Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch for this stark meditation on brutality and humanity in the Old West

AMERICAN PRIMEVAL

Thursday, Netfli

In 1800s America, life was simply a matter of survival, and this six-episode limited series explores the vicious realities of 1857 Utah and the road West, where Indigenous people, members of

the Mormon Church and other colonizers violently clash over ownership of a territory that all involved see as rightfully theirs. Netflix describes its upcoming drama as a “fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.”

Kelowna’s own Taylor Kitsch — once again joining forces with his Friday Night Lights and Painkiller director Peter Berg — stars as Isaac, a stoic man who encounters Sara Rowell (GLOW ’s Betty Gilpin) on her westward journey. With her son Devin (Preston Mota) in tow, Sara recruits Isaac to be their guide and help them reach Devin’s father somewhere over the horizon.

Keeping each other safe along the way is a complicated task as danger is everywhere. Set during an incredibly tumultuous time in Utah, horrific violence was commonplace. Canadian Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) portrays Brigham Young, an influential early leader of the Mormon Church and the first governor of the Utah Territory. The church’s followers

and militia members were responsible for the Utah War and the bloody Mountain Meadows Massacre — hostile toward any form of outsider, including the government.

Rounding out the A-list ensemble are Jai Courtney (Spartacus) as Virgil Cutter, a morally flexible trapper who makes the jump to bounty hunter; Dane DeHaan (Oppenheimer) as Jacob Pratt, a devout young Mormon whose faith is tested by the brutality of life in the West; Saura Lightfoot-Leon as Jacob’s strong-willed wife Abish; Shea Whigham (Boardwalk

Empire) as Jim Bridger, founder of a key strategic fort coveted by the Mormons and the U.S. government alike; and Derek Hinkey (Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1) as rebellious Indigenous leader Red Feather, who is not content to let either the Mormons or the Army run roughshod over his ancestral home.

Naturally, all films and TV series based on historical events take some creative liberties with their subjects and settings, but creator and director Peter Berg wanted to make sure one part of the American Primeval story was told with as much accuracy as possible.

Indigenous cultural consultant Julie O’Keefe was brought into the series’ creative team to oversee how the three Tribal Nations — the Shoshone, Paiute and Ute tribes — were depicted. As Berg said in an interview with Tudum, “Julie was there every day making sure that we got it right — that we got the hair right, the jewelry right, the clothes right, the language right, the behaviour right, for the time period and the Nations.”

O’Keefe herself deftly summarized the importance of cultural accuracy in projects such as this one, saying to Tudum: “Imagine if you buried the Pope in lederhosen with a Buddhist nun officiating Catholic rites, while everyone danced with a Union Jack flag. That is what it looks like to see your culture misrepresented.”

As for what defines this gritty western as a whole, Berg teases: “I’m looking forward to taking viewers into the most dynamic, intense and heart-pounding survival tale humanly possible. We are going into the belly of the beast.” ■

DRAGONS’ DEN

Thursday, 8 p.m., CBC

QWas it intimidating at all being the new Dragon in the Den?

AI was overwhelmed . . . It was really strange. They don’t give you training when you become a Dragon. You just show up and you’re like, “How do I do this?” So, in the breaks, sitting beside Manjit [Minhas] and Arlene [Dickinson], I would turn to them and ask them questions. “What does this mean?” . . . I think it’s important to call out that I had never invested in someone else’s business prior to this show. This was incredibly new to me, and the Dragons took me under their wings and I got to learn.

QDo you think that being a truly selfmade businessman gives you a rare sort of connection to these contestants?

A

I look back at the early, early days of my business and I relate to these entrepreneurs that are just getting going, who might not have the education — like I didn’t — or who might not have the money — like I didn’t . . . [compared to] if somebody tries to relate to a Kevin O’Leary, one of the early Dragons, who had a different upbringing than I did. You can look at Brian Scudamore and go, “He came from nothing. He didn’t even finish high school. If he can do it, then so can I.”

QWhat’s at the heart of your own entrepreneurial drive?

A My grandparents ran an army surplus store, and I remember just watching their work ethic, and watching them solve problems. “How do you grow the business? How do you deal with inventory

challenges?” Entrepreneurship is a daily set of challenges; I think of my job as being like Whack-a-Mole. For me, entrepreneurship is just that tenacity of go, go, go — you’re so driven by your own internal motivations to build a business that you’ll do anything to make it work . . . Something I’ve seen in entrepreneurs that have been successful is their ability to be resilient — take a No from someone and go, “OK, what do I learn from this? How do I get to a Yes?” You almost collect Nos as an entrepreneur.

QCan you recall a time when things just weren’t working with 1-800-GOTJUNK? and you had to change course?

ASure can. In 1994, five years into the business, I realized very clearly that I had the wrong people — and they say one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. I had 11 employees, and nine of them were just not the right people for me. So, I made a tough decision. I went in that next morning and I told everybody I was cleaning house. I let

go of 11 employees, because the only way I could move forward was to start again. I said I’m sorry — those were the first two words out of my mouth — that I didn’t give them the leadership they needed to be successful. And I made a pivot. I started hiring people differently. I hired people based on attitude and personality, and their desire to want to build something with me vs. people that just saw it as an hourly job.

QHow does our Dragons’ Den stand apart from the international versions?

AI’ve watched Shark Tank. I’ve watched some of the Sharks rip apart a pitcher — and I’m like, “What lesson are you teaching that person?” You’ve told them “No,” but you’ve [also] told them their idea is ridiculous. Find the good in them that you can prop up and say, “I don’t know if you’re going to be successful, but here’s what I would do.” Give them some wisdom. To me, the word that stands out in Dragons’ Den Canada would be “encouragement.”

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell in our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
