has been raising and marketing quality Hereford cattle for 3 Generations and over 50 years. The ranch is located in the South West part of Alberta, a short distance from the Majestic Rocky Mountains and within 5 miles of the Montana,USA Border. The ranch philosophy has always been to run a low maintenance, high performance, strong maternal cowherd that keeps the cows working for the family and not the family working for the cows. With this in mind the ranch has never chased fads or lost sight of the economically important traits that have made Herefords the Trademark Beef Breed. Over 370 Registered Females are being bred annually. Cattle are culled
hard with only 55-65 bulls sold annually. That means that only 30%-35% of the bull calves born make it as bulls and all of them are offered in this sale. So you can select your bulls with confidence knowing our best are here.

A Simple Guide to EPD’s
EPD’s are only one of several tools that can assist you in finding the bull that will best meet your needs and help you reach your long term production goals. EPD’s do not indicate how many pounds will be added to a herd’s average by using a particular bull. Only the differences among bulls is relevant. For example if you have been using a Her efor d bull with the breed average Birth Weight EPD of +3.5 and you buy a bull with a birth weight EPD of +7.5 how much will you birth weight increase? The answer … “who knows?” Theoretically he would have the genetics to add 4 pounds to your birth weights, so if your calves were averaging 80lbs they could average 84lbs. This assumes both bulls were used on the same cows, (a percentage of birth weight is determined by the cow’s genetics) and all other variables such as weather, the type or amount of feed available remained the same. If you have been using a bull with a breed average weaning EPD of +45 and your new bull has a weaning EPD of +60, on the same group of cows the new bull should have the genetics to add 15lbs to the average weaning weight should all the other environmental conditions remain the same. If you wish to take advantage of EPD’s it is important to know which traits are most advantageous to your herd and your projected market and to be aware of the EPD’s for the bulls you are using to compare them to the bulls you plan to purchase. Remember only the difference between the EPD’s is relevant. Another consider ation is a bull’s EPD’s can, and usually will, change as more information is added, especially if his progeny are analyzed. These changes take place twice a year as the Association conducts genetic evaluations. We would remind you, that while these EPD’s can be used to compare Herefords across North America, they can not be used as a reference between breeds.
UNDERSTANDING THE EPD TABLE
AB = Actual Birth Weight. BW = Birth Weight EPD - expressed in pounds WW = Weaning Weight EPD - expressed in pounds YW = Yearling Weight EPD - expressed in pounds M = Milk EPD - The genetic ability of a bull’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. TM = Total Maternal EPD - A prediction of the weaning weight performance of a bull’s daughters based on a combination growth & milk genetics. REA = Rib Eye Area - the higher the number the bigger the rib eye IMF = Marbling - the higher the number the higher chance of grading AAA or better FMI = Feedlot Merit Index– A weighted combination of calving, performance, and carcass traits to help establish the profitability of an animal’s progeny as feeder cattle. The higher the number the more profitable the feeder cattle.
