BULLS FOR SALE PRIVATE TREATY CALGARY BULL SALE MEDICINE HAT BULL SALE

W

elcome

Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch is pleased to present our latest crop of sale bulls, the best of our polled and horned breeding program. Most will be sold at your convenience, by private treaty. We will also continue to support the Calgary Bull Sale and Medicine Hat Bull Sale in March 2013. We have had a busy year, welcoming many visitors who attended the World Hereford Conference but also working hard to continue improving our herd. Our goal is to produce breeding stock that works in today’s commercial cattle industry and to achieve that our philosophy is to combine cowboy practicality with 21st century science. We all know the math…. Profit = Revenue – Expenses

Your Revenue is weaning weight and uniformity of calves and salvage value of cull cows; if you retain ownership then feedlot average daily gain and carcass traits are important. Your Expenses are labour, feed, replacement heifers and bulls Use Bar Pipe bulls to Improve Your Bottom Line! We select for: √ Balanced Growth - Big growthy calves are great but selection for that alone will produce bigger cows that eat more than smaller ones. Balanced trait selection matters. √ Uniformity – Many visitors note the consistency of our cows and sale pen. We get this by sticking to a set of breeding goals that don’t compromise in one area in order to advance another. We achieve this by weaving different bloodlines as well as line breeding to elite sires. √ Fertility – A cow producing a calf every year is a given. 75 to 80 percent of our calves come in the first cycle. Less labour, extra pounds, and more uniform calves in the fall.

√ Docility – Our cows and sale bulls are quiet and easy to handle. Temperament is heritable and affects the bottom line since easy to handle cattle require less labour and facilities, gain better and have better carcass quality in the feedlot, and are more fertile. √ Longevity or Stayability– A cow doesn’t start to return a profit until her third or fourth calf and so longevity is critical. It is impacted by structural soundness and fertility. While our job as breeders is to select for genetic improvement, which requires us to turn over the generations, 35% of our cows are older than 8 and up to 12 years of age . Four of our herd sires are breed leaders for stayability. √ Feed Efficiency – Since no one wants to have to pamper their cattle, we select for cattle that thrive on forage year round by relying on winter grazing and calving on pasture in April/May. To take this to the next level our entire 2012 bull calf crop is heading to Olds College for a feed efficiency trial. The study is under the umbrella of the Canadian Hereford Association, University of Alberta, Olds College, Livestock Gentec and Cattleland Feeders. We believe this is an important economic trait and look forward to identifying individuals that excel within our herd. In addition to selecting for these traits, there are some things we don’t compromise on: Genetic integrity – With the advent of genomic tools, we test our herd sires to be free of known genetic abnormalities and participate in research to advance the discovery of markers of desirable traits. Serving the long term needs of our customers – For that to work, we need to know your operation and you need to see our whole cow herd, not just the few bulls at the bull sale… hence our focus on private treaty sales. Our guarantee: 1) We will work with you to find cattle that meet your needs and provide the information that you need; 2) Your bulls have been semen tested and are structurally sound; 3) We will provide you with actual birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights, carcass ultrasound information, EPDs, as well as history on close relatives. You are entitled to know the full story; 4) If your bull does not perform, we will work with you to find a replacement that gets your cows pregnant. Please contact us for more information about our sale cattle, to discuss your needs, or to schedule a visit to see our herd. You are welcome anytime!

We have a discussion every year on what data we should include in our sale catalogue. We believe in collecting performance and carcass information on our bulls and try to present it in a way that is most useful for our buyers to compare. We also listen to the feedback provided by our customers and have presented actual carcass measurements instead of indexes this year. Here is how to read the numbers in the catalogue:

EPDs The following EPDs are listed on our sale bulls:.

CE- Calving Ease, BW- Birthweight, WW - Weaning Weight, YW Yearling Weight, Milk, TM - Total Maternal, STAY - Stayability, MPI Maternal Productivity Index, REA - Rib Eye Area, MAR - Marbling. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the breeding value of an animal for a specific trait, calculated as the difference in expected performance of progeny from that animal, compared to others of average genetic merit. EPDs are estimated from the phenotypic merit of the animal’s relatives, its own performance and that of its progeny. EPDs are reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g., lbs, cm, %). Accuracy of EPDs is the correlation between an animal's EPD and its actual breeding value. Accuracies are low unless the traits have been measured in the animal and until the animal has reported progeny. This is why we have only listed the accuracies for the herdsires. If you are interested, the accuracies for individual sale bulls can be found at www.hereford.ca. or give us a call and we will provide you with the information. Bar Pipe is enrolled in the Total Herd Evaluation (THE) program of the Canadian Hereford Association in order to produce herd indices and select the best. We collect birth, weaning, yearling, mature cow weights and scrotal circumference. We collect carcass ultrasound measurements at one year of age. With these traits measured for generations, our EPDs are based on facts not guesses. MPI (Maternal Productivity Index) is an index developed by the Canadian Hereford Association that balances the various traits that underlie profitability in the cow calf industry – weaning weight, milk, mature cow weight, and stayability – and expresses them in economic terms. This is a real world composite measure that impacts your bottom line. 28% of Bar Pipe females calving in 2013, and 47% of replacement heifers, have an MPI in the top 10% of the breed The average MPI of the current Bar Pipe herd sires is 151 (top 20% of the breed)

ALGARY ULL ALE

March 6 & 7, 2013

The consignment sale bulls have all been on a different management program than the private treaty bulls in preparation for the World Hereford Conference Show in July, 2012. Some of the bulls were shown individually in the Open Show and we also had two pens of bulls for the Rancher Day Show. As usual, we chose a few sire groups to represent our breeding program at the World Show and at the consignment bull sales. We could easily have chosen many individuals out of the private treaty group to fit for the show and sales. Our decision was ultimately to feature two new herdsires, one polled and one horned. The consignment sale bulls have been on a complete feed from HighPro Feeds that is a high protein, developing bull ration. They were sorted from the rest of the bulls in December and were indexed as a separate group. We are very happy with how they have grown out on this ration and they have been fed in keeping with our philosophy of not raising overfat bulls for the sales. We welcome you to visit the ranch prior to the bull sales, stop by our stall at Calgary or Medicine Hat or visit our website: www.barpipe.com for updates.

We have had a very positive response to our polled breeding program and are pleased to bring a completely polled string to Medicine Hat in 2013. Our philosophy has been to breed our very best horned cows to the kind of polled bulls that our ranch customers can appreciate. The response to our polled Rancher Day pen at the World Hereford Conference was very encouraging. These same bulls are proudly offered at Medicine Hat. We look forward to seeing you at the sale!

Co-owned with Anchor Polled Herefords, Vaughn, MT The foundation sire of our polled program, 44U has crossed very well on our Ribstone 64H daughters and granddaughters. In giving him our best horned cows we are counting on developing a strong POLLED genetic base for our polled division. Anchor 44U is the kind of bull ranchers appreciate. He is deep bodied, long sided and shows lots of muscle expression, traits he has been passing on to his calves. He is fully pigmented and short marked with good hair and bone. He has made confirmed horned bull buyers take a second look! Hinderager’s had daughters calving in 2012 and they look great. Nice udders and lots of milk. We look forward to calving out our first Anchor females next spring. SIRE:

STANDARD 68L DOM LAD 38T {DLF IEF HYF}

Australian Semen: Mawarra Herefords This outstanding bull was the most popular herdsire at Bar Pipe amongst our many World Hereford Conference visitors. His overall balance, depth of quarter and thickness is combined with a balanced set of EPDs and a growing progeny base in Canada Semen Available. and the USA. 38T daughters are the best sire group in our young cows and will be the future of our Horned breeding program. Every calf crop out of 38T through 2011 has been heavy to heifer calves and while we are happy to add them to our replacement pen we haven’t had many sons to sell to date. His mother is one of the top Kallal cows here at Bar Pipe and will be flushed in 2013. Australian semen rights owned by Mawarra Hereford Stud. CJK 112N
