Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch is pleased to present our sale bulls and heifers for 2013/14, the best of our polled and horned breeding program. Most will be sold at your convenience, by private treaty. We will also continue to support the Calgary Bull Sale and Medicine Hat Bull Sale in March 2014. We are proud to present the results of our work introducing new ways for you to assess our cattle. There are positive signs in the cattle industry but there is always a need for Jay Cross breeding stock that increases value but reduces costs at the same time, meaning more profit. Our goal is to produce those cattle that work in today’s commercial cattle industry and our approach combines cowboy practicality, 21st century science and that focus on economics.

Use Bar Pipe bulls to Improve Your Bottom Line! We select for: ¥ Balanced Traits - Big growthy calves are great but selection for that alone will produce bigger cows that eat more than smaller ones. Balanced trait selection matters. √ Uniformity – Many visitors note the consistency of our cows and sale pen. We get this by sticking to a set of breeding goals that don’t compromise in one area in order to advance another. We achieve this by weaving different bloodlines as well as line breeding to elite sires. √ Fertility – A cow producing a calf every year is a given. 75 to 80 percent of our calves come in the first cycle. Less labour, extra pounds, and more uniform calves in the fall. √ Docility – Our cows and sale bulls are quiet and easy to handle. Temperament is heritable and affects the bottom line since easy to handle cattle require less labour and facilities, gain better and have better carcass quality in the feedlot, and are more fertile. √ Longevity or Stayability– A cow doesn’t start to return a profit until her third or fourth calf and so longevity is critical. It is impacted by structural soundness and fertility. While our job as breeders is to select for genetic improvement, which requires us to turn over the generations, 35% of our cows are older than 8 and up to 12 years of age . Four of our herd sires are breed leaders for stayability. √ Feed Efficiency – Since no one wants to have to pamper their cattle, we select for cattle that thrive on forage year round by relying on winter grazing and calving on pasture in April/May. To take this to the next level our entire 2012 bull calf crop was sent to Olds College for a feed efficiency trial The 2013 bulls are enrolled in the same trial in 2014. The study is under the umbrella of the Canadian Hereford Association, University of Alberta, Olds College, Livestock Gentec and Cattleland Feeders. We believe this is an important economic trait and look forward to identifying individuals that excel within our herd. In addition to selecting for these traits, there are some things we don’t compromise on: Genetic integrity – With the advent of genomic tools, we test our herd sires to be free of known genetic abnormalities and participate in research to advance the discovery of markers of desirable traits. Serving the long term needs of our customers – For that to work, we need to know your operation and you need to see our whole cow herd, not just the few bulls at the bull sale… hence our focus on private treaty sales. 3

PS

RIVATE TREATY ALE BULLS

Our goal is to offer a consistent set of bulls every year to our private treaty customers. We pick sire groups for the consignment sales and like to leave sire groups in the private treaty pen . We cull hard and feel every bull we sell has something to offer. Lots of our bulls are sold sight unseen and we won't send out a bull we wouldn't use ourselves. We have provided lots of information about the bulls and welcome visitors to tour our operation anytime. We run under practical ranch conditions and our bulls leave here ready to work at their new home.

This bull was orphaned in July and stayed out on pasture until weaning. As a result he does not have any indexes. He has certainly overcome this major obstacle and is a deep, soggy bull that could be used on heifers. He has a great haircoat and is from the same cow family as our high selling bull at Medicine Hat that sold to Durbin Creek for $16,000. 4

ANCHOR 44U {DLF IEF HYF}

Co-owned with Anchor Polled Herefords, Vaughn, MT

POLLED Anchor 44U is the kind of bull ranchers appreciate. He is deep bodied, long sided and shows lots of muscle expression, traits he has been passing on to his calves. He is fully pigmented and short marked with good hair and bone. He has made confirmed horned bull buyers take a second look! First sons sold were popular with both ranchers and purebred breeders.

The foundation sire of our polled program, 44U has crossed very well on our Ribstone 64H daughters and granddaughters. In giving him our best horned cows we are counting on developing a strong genetic base for our polled division.

Semen Available.

The first daughters at Bar Pipe calved in 2013 and had nice udders and lots of milk. Canada, US and Australian qualified semen available. SIRE:

Expected Progeny Difference

is a measure of the trait value of an animal, calculated as the difference in expected performance of progeny from that animal, compared to others of average genetic merit. EPDs are estimated from the phenotype of the animal, it’s relatives and progeny, and depends on the heritability of the trait. EPDs are reported in units of measure for the trait (e.g., lbs, cm, %). Accuracy of EPDs is the correlation between an animal’s EPD and its actual breeding value. Accuracies are low unless the traits have been measured and until the animal has reported progeny. This is why we only list the accuracies for the herd sires but, if you are interested, the accuracies for sale cattle can be found at www.hereford.ca, or give us a call. Bar Pipe is enrolled in the Total Herd Evaluation (THE) program of the Canadian Hereford Association in order to produce herd indices. We collect calving score, birth, weaning, yearling, mature cow weights and scrotal circumference. We also collect carcass ultrasound measurements at one year of age. With these traits measured for generations, our EPDs are based on facts not guesses. The Canadian Hereford Association publishes 15 EPDs. We have listed the ones in the catalogue that are most relevant to our customers: t CE - calving ease t WW - weaning weight t

YW - yearling weight

t MILK – contribution of milk production to calf growth t STAY - stayability t REA - rib eye area t MAR – marbling In addition, based on our feed efficiency results, we have calculated EPDs on the bulls for: t RFI Residual Feed Intake (feed efficiency) t RIG Residual Intake and Gain, 46

Know Your Production Goals Bull selection depends on your production goal for your cow herd. If you produce sale calves and retain your own replacement heifers these are the traits that are important for you: t t t t t t

Calving Ease (CE) -born easy, no work Weaning Weight (WW) - heavy calves in the fall Milk - enough to produce a good calf Cow Weight - lower means less feed Stayability - fertility and soundness RFI - more efficient cows eat less

We've made it easy, if you sell calves and raise your own replacement heifers look for traits under this heading:

Cow Calf EPDs If you retain ownership of your calves in the feedlot then you need to pay attention to: t Calving Ease (CE) -born easy, no work t Weaning Weight (WW) - heavy calves in the fall t Yearling Weight (YW) - good growth at home and in the feedlot t Rib Eye Area (REA) and Marbling (Marb) - good carcass for better yield and premium t Residual Intake and Gain (RIG) balancing growth with efficiency. We've made it easy, if you retain ownership of your calves in the feedlot look for traits under this heading:

What's Important to Me?

When you evaluate bulls for so many different traits, it’s easy for even us to get lost in the numbers. No one bull can serve everyone’s needs and what you need for your cow herd depends on your production goals. We think that every bull for sale has things to offer and we stand behind them all. Above average traits are highlighted in GREEN. Above Average Trait

Buying a Bull? Think in Profit Terms Step one is knowing what your herd needs to improve the balance in traits. To assess the financial impact of using a bull, multiply the expected trait by the economic value of that trait. The difference between a bull's EPD and that of the breed average allows comparisons to be made between bulls. An EPD is a more accurate way of estimating the genetic merit of a bull, rather than looking at just its individual measures, because an EPD takes into account the heritability as well as the phenotypes of all relatives. 50

The Canadian Hereford Association recognizes breeders that maintain complete and accurate reporting of performance data. 5 Star breeders report calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight and at least two additional traits. Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch is one of only 17 breeders in Canada to qualify for the 5 Star designation We measure 9 traits. 51

Feed Efficiency ....It Pays to Know

Bar Pipe enrolled 50 bull calves in the Hereford Residual Feed Intake Project at Olds College. We believe RFI is a valuable breed improvement tool.

RFI (Residual Feed Intake) is a measure of feed efficiency

but is adjusted to account for differences in body weight, body fat composition and rate of gain. The average for a group of animals is set at zero. Negative numbers mean that an animal is more efficient. For example, an RFI of -2 means that animal ate 2 lbs less of dry matter per day compared to average. Over the course of a year, that would mean 730 lbs less! In the trial, the average bull ate about 18 pounds of dry matter per day though the most efficient ate about 20% less and the least efficient ate about 20% more. This was after accounting for differences in body weight, fat composition and rate of gain! RFI is highly heritable at 40%, comparable to the heritability for weaning weight. Selection for RFI will rapidly reduce maintenance costs.

RIG (Residual Intake and Gain) is calculated

as an index that combines RFI and Average Daily Gain. It is adjusted for body weight, body fat composition and feed intake to allow for direct comparisons between animals. The more positive the number, the better. It can be used to select for balanced feed efficiency and rate of gain after weaning, a trait important for producers who retain ownership of their calves as feeders.

Putting it together is a matter of $ and Sense

The Bar Pipe Cow Calf Index (BCI) An index developed by Bar Pipe that balances the six traits that underlie profitability in the cow-calf industry. It includes calving ease, weaning weight, milk production, mature cow weight, stayability and feed efficiency and expresses them in economic terms by using current dollar values for costs and revenues from weaned calves. This is a real world measure that impacts your bottom line. Our BCI is an extension of the MPI (Maternal Productivity Index) developed and published by the Canadian Hereford Association. The MPI is still useful but does not take into account calving ease and feed efficiency. Because we have that information and believe in its importance, we have added them to the calculation. Like all indexes the average BCI is 100. Trait

$ Value

CE (% chance of dystocia)

Calving difficulties mean extra labour, a potential c-section and/or a dead calf

Average cost of a calving problem is $250

Weaning Weight (lbs)

Heavier calves at weaning mean more $ at auction

500 weight calves have been selling in the $1.60 to 1.80 range

Milk (lbs)

Cows with more milk produce heavier calves BUT the cost is that she may not maintain herself

An extra pound at weaning is worth something but could be discounted because the stayability of the cow is compromised by as much as 25%

Cow Weight (lbs)

Big cows eat more, but also For every extra 100 lbs of produce bigger calves and body weight, a cow will have higher salvage value require about $14 more in feed per year

Stayability (% chance A replacement heifer is a that a cow will stay in the cost for 2 ½ years before herd she weans her first calf RFI (lbs of feed per day)

Replacement heifers have been selling for $1,300 $1,600 ($650 - $800 per year)

More efficient means that A one lb per day reduca cow's maintenance feed tion in dry matter intake costs are reduced. is 365 lbs per year, at 7 cents per day = $25.55 53
