Building the Legacy 11

Page 1

Tammi Ribey chair, Canadian Angus foundation

Welcome to Building the Legacy 11! The Legacy sales have made the Canadian Angus Foundation’s dreams come true. The continued generosity of our members is heartwarming. This sale is full of items of interest to everyone from picks of the herd, pregnant recipients, experiences and much more.

For the past decade Angus breeders and industry supporters have donated top genetics, services, and experiences to the sale. Bidding is always strong, and we are fortunate to raise funds to help the Canadian Angus Foundation continue the legacy. The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation and restoration.

We strongly support our youth with scholarships and travel bursaries. We work hard to offer opportunities for youth from across the country to experience Angus events. The youth are our future! We are also trying to improve the world for Angus breeders now by supporting research initiatives and educational meetings.

“Individually, we are one drop but TOGETHER, we are an ocean.” Please consider supporting the sale on June 10.

Chad Lorenz Chair, Building the Legacy Sale Committee

It is with both excitement and anticipation that we present Building the Legacy 11! On behalf of the sale committee and the Canadian Angus Foundation, I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to each donor: without them no part of this fundraiser is possible. And without fundraising none of the CAF initiatives are achievable.

I believe the feature lots in this 11th edition Legacy sale are as intriguing and significant as ever. There are five breeders who have stepped up and donated either a pick of their entire calf crop, a flush on a feature donor or a pregnant recip. Each of those breeders are digging extremely deep into the heart of their program to offer genetic pieces that would hands down have the ability to lead and feature any sale offering this fall. Every one of us in Saskatoon or following along online the evening of June 10 will be the beneficiaries of their generosity. In addition, the frozen genetics will feature some of the most talked about semen and embryos in the breed, including exclusive genetics that are not available on the open market and some old breed legends that are in very limited supply. We have several industry leaders that have offered credits or vouchers toward their services, and multiple experience packages that would make great family getaways. The art section will be highlighted by our newest CAF commissioned print ‘Heading Home’ by the talented Megan Weir. Many of the sale managers and consultants will be in attendance or helping from a distance with Building the Legacy 11. Please feel free to reach out to them or take part online with DLMS. On behalf of the Foundation and the Legacy sale committee, I would like to share our appreciation for every breeder, business or individual who has contributed to this fundraiser. I invite you to come and take in all that the Canadian Angus Convention has to offer and Building the Legacy 11 on Saturday evening. See you in Saskatoon.

Graham McLean President, Canadian Angus Association

I would like to welcome everyone to this year’s offering in the 11th annual Building the Legacy sale.

The Canadian Angus Foundation has put together another exciting offering this year. I would like to thank all the donors and future buyers. With the generosity and support of our members and associates, our junior members have been able to participate in conferences, shows and fellowship with members across the country. The time and energy that the Foundation and its committee have put into this sale will allow the legacy to continue.

Research initiatives have been part of our strategic plan to bring the most progressive programs and technologies that we require to stay competitive in the global beef business. Preserving our history and memories is another pillar of our Foundation. Preserving history will propel us into a successful future. This auction brings together our Angus heritage across the world whether it be live at Convention in Saskatoon or online at home in front of your computer.

Please keep in mind that your donations are not only supporting the future of Canadian Junior Angus, but also future leaders and whatever path that will be paved. Take the time and participate. Thanks for your continued support! Good Buying!

Building the Legacy 2

Wheeler’s Stock Farm is honoured to offer the pick of our 2023 Red Angus heifer calves for the Building the Legacy sale. Our purebred herd was established in 1997 by Harvey, Frances and Michael Wheeler, with our first calf crop registered with CAA in 1998. We recently celebrated 25 years as CAA members, and with Harvey’s recent passing we could not think of a more fitting tribute to honour his legacy. The future of Wheeler’s Stock Farm is Michael, Rhea and their boys Ty, Tate and Rhett. All three boys are Canadian Junior Angus members, registering their own cattle and participating in junior shows and events.

Over the past 25 years only a few select females have been offered from the herd. We have built our herd around strong maternal and performance-oriented cow families like the Anne, Auburn, Avocet, Barbie, Becky, Bridget, Countess, Dawn, Heather, Lady, Jestress, Meg, Pride and Rose families. With an ever-growing ET program, you will have the opportunity to pick from our best ET and natural-born red-hided heifers. Included in the group would be daughters and grand-daughters of some of the most recognizable cows in the breed including Annie Oakley 8B, Meg 169Z and the recent Grand Champion Red Angus Female at Agribition, Red Wheel Ginger Barbie 1E.

We have always focused on producing cattle that will make a positive impact for our commercial bull customers and have established a strong repeat customer base. We held our 20th annual bull sale in March. We have always invested in the best herd sires available and sires of this year’s heifers include Red Wheel Stark 67G, Red SSS Good Time Charlie 364J, Red W Sunrise Typhoon 604H, W Sunrise Executive 8J, Red Bar-E-L Magic Mike 189Z, Red Wheel Hard Knox 75H, Red Wheel Fort Knox 47H and Red Wheel Arrow 66J. Many of our sires represent the best outcross genetics in the Red Angus gene pool.

We will be happy to assist the purchaser to make their selection. Come and view the heifers in the summer on grass beside their mothers. Selection must be made by September 1, 2023 to allow us time to make preparations for fall sales including Red Round-Up and our own female sale being held on December 8.

Fleury Cattle Company is located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, just 35 minutes northeast of Saskatoon. We run a registered Black Angus operation with a cow herd consisting of 250 registered Black Angus females offering Canadian outcross genetics, rare to North America and the world. This year we will be celebrating 22 years in the seedstock industry.

We are proud to say that 85% of our herd bull battery is Fleury Cattle Company bred and raised. These herd sires are carefully selected from our program and backed by our prominent cow families. The famous Annie K cow continues to be the nucleus of our cow herd, along with other top cow families: Blackcap, Princess, Elena, Royce, Blacklass, Queenette, Blackbird, Ruby, Lady Lass, and Susie. Sons have been sold in our annual bull sale throughout North America. Today we are proud to have our genetics working in Australia, Argentina, Nebraska, Iowa, Montana, Idaho, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

We are pleased to offer the pick of Fleury Cattle Company’s 2023-born heifer calves at this year’s Canadian Angus Foundation Building the Legacy sale. Saturday, June 10 marks a rare opportunity for Fleury Cattle Company and our fellow Angus breeders as we are opening up our breeding program like never before. We would be pleased to tour you around our cow herd and offer any recommendations to help assist you with your pick.

I’d like to thank the Canadian Angus Foundation for all they do for youth in the cattle industry. I was fortunate to participate in many Canadian Junior Angus programs growing up. These programs provided me with many great opportunities at a young age that I believe have played a significant role in getting me where I am today.

We invite you to attend the Building the Legacy sale on June 10, 2023. This sale offers a great opportunity to support the Foundation while investing in genetics that aren’t regularly available. If you have any questions regarding our breeding program or our donation to this sale, we would love to visit with you.

Selection to be completed by October 31, 2023.

Brooking Abigail 6006 is an extremely impressive female. In our opinion she is close to ideal in her type. She is well-made, wide-hipped, bold in her shape and volume, level-uddered, easy fleshing, with a traditional Angus head. Her first son Brooking Futures 8055 is owned by Westway Farms and Riverfront Angus Ranch. We have sold eight sons to average in excess of $10,000. Brooking Abigail 6006 has a progeny weaning ratio of 106 and her dam has premier status with the CAA. Her dam, Flag Abigail 10671, is awesome-uddered, angular-made, perfect phenotype, excellent-footed and is always a favourite among visitors. She looks fantastic and had her twelfth natural calf this year.

Erica 74A has solidified herself as one of the most significant Angus females in history. She is 10 years old and continues to look, act and perform like she is in the prime of her life. She has the attributes that are highly sought after as she is powerful, bold ribbed and has that crazy good Natural Law daughter udder quality. Her embryo production is mind boggling and the consistency in the calves is so satisfying. The 2023 Building the Legacy sale is your chance to add Erica 74A genetics to your program and help Canadian Junior Angus members at the same time. “Penny up”, “pony up” or “partner up”, but whatever you do, don’t “pass up” on this unique opportunity. The mating with Mc Cumber La Joya is one we are very excited about at Blairs. Ag Cattle Co, and this is your chance to jump on board with Erica 74A and this maternal brother to Mc Cumber Tribute.

Ranch Covey Hill is excited to offer one pregnancy off of Blackbird 28G to Building the Legacy! 28G, more commonly known as Gigi around here, is one of the youngest cows in our donor pen. She has been a favourite of ours ever since she was a calf. She was our “first” for a lot of things. She and her dam were one of the first cow/calf pairs we bought back in 2018. She is the first calf we ever halter-broke, won our first ribbons with, participated in our first Gold Show with, the list goes on. She has generations upon generations of hardworking females behind her. Her cow family has had a great impact on our program. She is one of the biggest ribbed and biggest barrelled females you can find. With bomb-proof disposition, this sleek fronted female is an absolute powerhouse. She raised our second-highestselling ($26,000) bull in 2022 as a two-year-old, Covey Hill Sparrow 10J. Her 2022 heifer calf is at the top of our replacement pen.

PEAK DOT MIA 247C X WOODHILL REVIVAL H028

1 Package of 3 Embryos

Peak Dot Mia 247C is the ideal donor and one that needs to be invested in with confidence as she is extremely fertile and can raise big time progeny. The Unanimous cattle flat-out produce and 247C is among the very best donors at Peak Dot. She raised a personal favourite bull to sell in 2021, the $35,000 Peak Dot Newfound 83H. He was extremely stout, hairy, big hipped, good looking, strong footed and many of those qualities came from his dam. Fertility runs deep in the genetics as 247C is one of the top embryo producing donors we flushed with Canadian Donors and we did just shy of averaging 30 in total per flush.

We believe in the Canadian Angus Foundation and the tremendous work they are doing, so when we get asked to contribute to the Legacy Sale, we want to give something that is unique. This is the only opportunity to get a Kristina embryo in Canada this year.

DMM Rolling Stone 10G is the sire of the best two-year-old group of females ever born at Miller Wilson. We are going to put in one more “yet to be determined“ embryo out of one of our other donors. They will be flushed after the printing of this catalogue.

Cudlobe West is very excited to offer the pairing of Cudlobe W Enchantress 7J and 44 Good News 1130. She is a very correct made moderate framed female that checks all the right boxes. Sired by the ever-popular Deer Valley Growth Fund, you will struggle to find a 2-year-old female with more correct feet and udder than her. Her mother is a key donor in our embryo program and 7J looks like she will be following very closely in her footsteps. 7J is a female we believe has a very bright future in our herd.

Good News 1130 is a standout bull that we are excited to be using this year that goes back to the well-known Casino Bomber. He is a bull that has everything you look for in phenotype, carcass, calving ease and performance. We expect big things from this flush and are excited to offer these genetics in Canada.

It is with great pleasure that we accepted when asked to be part of this year’s Building the Legacy sale. When we think of this sale the first thing that comes to mind is the success we have had with a purchase out of this very sale. It was a package of 3 embryos graciously donated by Blairswest Land and Cattle. The result of those embryos was a female who is none other than HLC Erica 561G. Erica was very special right from the start. That fall as a heifer calf she highlighted our female sale where we sold half interest and shared possession to Kourtney Schaff, Schaff Angus Valley for $34,000. Since that day she has produced in excess of $152,000 on five progeny to average $30,400. We thought it only fitting that we give back to this sale right from where it started for us a few short years ago, and offer a package of 2 embryos off our donor HLC Erica 561G. These embryos are full sibling to our 2023 high selling bull, the $55,000 HLC CSI Elevation 100K who is now owned by Rafter D4 Livestock at Sherwood Park Alberta.

Hill Valley Reckoning is one of the most talked about Angus show bulls this past year in the United States, going undefeated in his division throughout his show career and getting the slap for Reserve Angus Bull at the North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE). Reckoning is sired by the great Youngdale Believe 46B backed by Youngdale Angus. Calves are just starting to hit the ground—the future looks bright for this young herd sire. Reckoning is extremely up-headed and clean fronted with cool neck extension. He possesses ultra flexible joints with desirable body depth, dimension and muscle shape. He is not only a bull to improve show quality, but is a great choice to improve herds of all types with his tremendous breed character, testicle shape, joint and foot quality, and overall excellent phenotype. Do not miss out on this incredible opportunity.

We are honoured to donate two straws of one of the most exciting bulls of any breed to surface in the North American beef industry, Glacier 041. The visual package on Glacier is unmatched starting up front with his masculine, herd bull crest and skull, his added length and depth, big robust hip, and strong feet and legs. Glacier himself is a $270,000 (1/4 interest) high seller that has the ability to take any breeding program to the absolute next level and put you on the map. Glacier is one of the most impressive bulls we have ever laid eyes on and is backed by a big-time female that annually produces great ones. We have an exciting group of Glacier calves on the ground and are very excited for Glacier’s future and all he will add to the industry.

Here is an exciting opportunity to acquire semen on one of the most talked about bulls of the 2022 bull sale season, the $63,000 Private Stock 879J. He is a two-time division champion at Canadian Western Agribition, first as a calf and again as a yearling. He was shown at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto where he earned the title of 2022 Reserve National Champion Angus Bull. His maternal brother, Elevation 100K, sired by Bloodline, was also a division champion at Agribition 2022. This spring he highlighted our bull sale selling for $55,000 to Rafter D4 Livestock. Their dam, Erica 561G has only begun to show us what she can do. In her first year of production, she earned just shy of $100,000 on her first four progeny. Private Stock calves have hit the ground and boy are they exciting. They are born moderate and have tons of vigor. His Pathfinder dam, granddam, and greatgranddam all have lifetime calving intervals of 365 days after many years in production.

One of the most influential female makers in the Angus breed, EXT is the most widely used bull in Angus history, a bull that has stood the test of time. EXT is a sire that will live on forever with his ability to produce great females and his relevance will continue to last.

Cowboy Cut was a major herd sire at both Bar-E-L and Lazy MC and was introduced to the US when Solution Genetics procured the US semen rights after seeing him at the 2009 World Angus Forum in Calgary. This Smash grandson sired lots of growth and style in his calves and put a show ring look and muscle shape into a generation of cattle.

ANGELA DAVIDSON PRINT LOT 55

In 2009, the Canadian Angus Association was honoured to receive an Angela Davidson print as a gift for hosting the World Angus Forum. We were thrilled each time we received an additional print. And now we are about to receive a fourth breathtaking print. There isn’t a word in the English language that can accurately convey the power and beauty Angela captures. This print deserves the place of greatest honour in the home or office of the highest bidder. We are grateful to our great friend and honourary Canadian James Arnott of Coul Angus and to Gavin and Mabel Hamilton of Belvin Angus for this extraordinary donation.

donated by:

“The Red Angus” was unveiled at the Canadian Angus Association office during Convention 2015. Scotland’s James Arnott commissioned the painting from Angela Davidson using his Red Angus bull as the model. The power and detail of the bull is outstanding and literally takes visitors’ breath away when they walk into the office and see it for the first, second or tenth time.

Canadian Angus secured the rights to market the print in Canada, and you only have one opportunity each year through Building the Legacy to add this masterpiece to your collection.

In 1998, the Canadian Angus Association introduced the long-term recognition award program to recognize those individuals and families that have demonstrated a long-time commitment to the Angus breed in Canada by maintaining a continuous membership in the Association for at least 50 years. The program was expanded in 2011 to also recognize families with 75 and 100 years of continuous membership. As of 2023, 222 families have been honoured for 50 years of continuous membership; 30 families have been honoured for 75 years and four families have been honoured for 100 years of continuous membership.

As part of their commitment to preserving history, the Canadian Angus Foundation has decided to invest in increased recognition for 75 and 100 year award recipients to acknowledge their tremendous dedication to the Angus breed. The enhanced recognition will take place in 2023. Watch the Canadian Angus Association newsletters and social media platforms for details.
