MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY JAN 20

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, or MLK Day, we honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK Day is a day to remember and reflect on King's message of racial equality and justice. It's also a day to encourage people to volunteer and improve their communities.

Legislation to recognize MLK Day was introduced four days after King's assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law in 1983, making it a federal holiday. It took 17 years for all 50 US states to recognize the holiday.

On MLK Day, people volunteer at shelters, hospitals, and prisons. They help feed the homeless, mentor children, and make their communities better.
