December 2017 ISSUE
Exams are Coming Whether you’re a first year or a grad student, it is easy to find yourself overwhelmed by exam season. There is so much to do between reviewing lectures, making flash cards, and stress eating chocolate. Remember the lessons you learned during midterms. What review sessions were helpful? Flash cards or color-coded notes? Group study sessions or solo study cubicles? Find your study groove and make it work for you. Need help finding your style? Visit your school’s academic success centre. AND don’t forget to take time for yourself – take a free yoga class in the building, grab a late night hot chocolate. Balance is important; make sure you still have gas in the tank to cross the term’s finish line in style! Desiree Fuller, Residence Life Coordinator Nick Holmberg, Residence Life Coordinator

RESIDENTS OF CAMPUSONE Nick Vandale, a first-year student at Recording Arts Canada, finds juggling the many factors of student life to be difficult at times. “The biggest challenge for me since beginning school this year has been managing my time efficiently,” Vandale says. Although college and university provide us with more independence, it can be hard to manage. To improve his efficiency, Vandale says he’s adopted a new sleep schedule allowing for less sleep at night and an hour-long nap during the day. “Taking into account class time, how much sleep I need, study time and time to relax are all equally important to me,” Vandale says.

DEAR WISEONE
Dear WISEONE, I can’t wait for Winter Break to start. I want to see my dog, hug my parents, and reconnect with my high school friends. But, I don’t want to go home. I like my freedom here and I’m not looking forward to providing my parents with a detailed itinerary of my every move. I haven’t been home since move-in; what if everything is different? Sincerely, Lost in Transition Dear Lost, In the wise words of Britney Spears, “Not a girl, not yet a woman” (or wherever on the gender spectrum you identify). That feeling of being caught between two worlds is completely normal. You’re homesick; but, you and your “home” have changed since you left. This can leave you feeling
adrift. When you’re home for break, focus on relationships, not the changes. Before you know it, classes will have started again. When you return, try to think of this experience as an opportunity to build a new home, a new community. It won’t replace the one you already have, instead it’ll add to your collection of people who care for you! Dear WiseONE, Exams are almost here. My roommates won’t clean. My part-time job is beginning to devour my free time and all my “friends” want to do is go out. I can’t breathe. I constantly fantasize about closing my door and hiding under the covers. I’m going through the motions, but I feel like I could break down crying at moment’s notice. I just need to get through
exams, but that impossible. Sincerely, Panic! At the Library
seems
Dear Panic!, It sounds like you are doing your best to work through a bad situation. But, we can’t always do it alone; sometimes, we need support. Have you visited your university/college’s health and wellness centre to make an appointment with a counselor? Often, you are paying for these services through your school fees so you might as well use them! If you just want to curl up under blanket, you can call Good 2 Talk (1-866-925-5454) and never have to change out of your PJs. Go for a run, vent to a friend, skype with your dog, talk to your Don - the point is you should make it a priority to take care of yourself. Have a question for WISEONE? Ask it by clicking here.
