ARY RECAP

HISTORY BLACK month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements and contributions of Black people throughout history It originated in 1926 as "Negro History Week" by historian Carter G. Woodson and was later expanded to a month in 1976. The month is a time to honor the legacy of Black individuals and reflect on their impact across cultures worldwide

"When we struggle, we struggle for the freedom of all people, not just one group of people "

The colors red, yellow, and green are often associated with the Pan-African flag and symbolize unity, strength, and freedom. Red represents the bloodshed and struggles for liberation, yellow stands for the wealth and prosperity of the African continent, and green symbolizes the land and the hope for a bright future These colors reflect the shared heritage and resilience of the global Black community

BLACK HISTORY IN CANADA

EVENT1 EVENT2 EVENT3 EVENT4

EARLY BEGINNINGS (1600S – 1800S)

The first recorded African people in Canada were enslaved Africans brought by European settlers in the 1600s In the 1800s, Black communities began to form in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec Notably, Black Loyalists who fled to Canada during the American Revolution, and runaway slaves from the U S found refuge here contributing to the growth of free Black settlements

THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY & MIGRATION (1834 – 1860S)

In 1834, slavery was officially abolished in Canada leading to a wave of African Americans seeking freedom through the Underground Railroad Thousands of fugitive slaves and free Black people from the U S migrated to Canada, particularly to Ontario, where they established thriving communities

EARLY 20TH CENTURY –STRUGGLES FOR EQUALITY (1900S – 1960S)

Black Canadians faced systemic racism and segregation, particularly in housing, employment, and education Despite challenges, key figures such as Viola Desmond, who resisted racial segregation in 1946, and Portia White, a world-renowned contralto, emerged as trailblazers for racial equality.

MODERN-DAY ACHIEVEMENTS & ONGOING STRUGGLES (1970S – PRESENT)

The late 20th century saw the formal recognition of Black contributions to Canadian society, with Black History Monthbeing officially recognized in 1995 Black Canadians today continue to break barriers in politics, arts, sports, and activism while fighting for racial justice and equality in areas like policing education and employment

Let’s honor the past, celebrate the present, and work together toward a brighter future.
