WITHIN THE ISSUE Note from the Res Life Office Pride Month Events Dear WiseOne

A NOTE FROM

THE RES LIFE OFFICE Toronto Pride June is Pride Month in Toronto! Its mission is to bring people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities together to “celebrate the history, courage and diversity of our [LGBTQ] community.”

June 24th will feature Toronto’s 38th Annual Pride Parade. While Canada is considered to be an international leader in LGBTQ rights, the LGBTQ Civil Rights movement has a recent history.

FUNONE Move Out Checklist Building Updates & Reminders

Although Pride events had occurred in Toronto since the early 1970s, it took almost to 20 years for the City of Toronto to officially recognize the event. In 2005, Bill C-38 made Canada the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. The LGTBQ community continues to face discrimination in Toronto and beyond. Transgender activists are fighting to make it easier for gender identity to be protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act. Events like Pride celebrate the courage of the LGBTQ community and remind us to stay vigilant against discrimination. Desiree & Nick Residence Life Coordinators 2

Dear WISEONE Dear WiseOne,

Dear WiseONE,

My uncle was recently diagnosed with health complications due to smoking. Ever since, my parents have been hassling me to quit smoking. My uncle situation is scary; but, I don’t know if I am ready to quit. What should I do?

I’m broke, living on your typical student budget. But, browsing social media instantly has be checking flight prices. I want to travel and I have the time to do so. Any advice for student travelers?

Sincerely, Not Quite A Quitter

Sincerely, Not All Who Wander are Rich Dear Not All Who Wander,

Dear Not Quite A Quitter, It sounds like you are pretty knowledgeable about the risks of smoking! If you’re not ready to quit, then you’re not ready. Communicate with your parents. If they are bugging you to quit, let them know their well-intentioned intervention is not helping! Don’t be afraid to quit and fail. Quitting smoking is tough! When you are ready, make sure to use the resources available, like leavethepackbehind.org and the Smoker’s Helpline (1-877-513-5333). Good luck to you!

A student budget is usually a tight budget! That being said, there are ways to get more bang for your buck when you travel. Go during the off season when prices are cheaper. Search for flights on websites like secretflying.com. Plan ahead! Find a friend to split costs. Buy food from a grocery store and spend less on eating out. Use public transportation to save money on cabs. If these tips don’t save enough money, consider a work abroad program and make money to cover your travels! Bon voyage!
