Cherry blossoms A beloved spring tradition, every year Torontonians hope to catch a glimpse of the delicate pink flowers on Toronto’s Sakura (cherry blossom) trees. This year, as a part of the City’s COVID-19 response, the High Park cherry blossom trees are enclosed with fencing to prevent in-person viewing during the peak bloom period. High Park remains open for local pedestrians and cyclists to get essential exercise. The park is closed to vehicle traffic during the bloom. To ensure no one misses the annual bloom, the City will again bring spring indoors. BloomCam Live! To encourage everyone to stay home and stay safe, the City is offering #BloomAtHome, a 24-hour 4K BloomCam livestream during the peak bloom period. Take a Virtual Tour of Cherry Lane Take a virtual tour through the blossoming trees along Cherry Lane. Watch Indigenous Knowledge Keeper André Morriseau recognize the traditional territories of the Indigenous Peoples through a Land Acknowledgement Let experts from Parks, Forestry and Recreation and High Park Nature Centre guide you through the nature and history of Toronto’s cherry blossom trees.

Victoria Day When is Victoria Day in Canada? Victoria Day is a federal Canadian statutory holiday observed on the Monday before May 25th each year. Victoria Day is Canada's oldest non-religious holiday. It marks the birthday of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). Following the death of Queen Victoria, May 24th was decreed as Empire Day across the British Empire. Today, Canada is the only country that still has a holiday on the day. The holiday, which is only celebrated in Canada and Scotland began as a celebration to honour Queen Victoria’s birthday.
History of Victoria Day For many Canadians, Victoria Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, with many people opening their summer cabins. It is a popular holiday as it is the first holiday to take place in the warmer summer months. The holiday is called 'May Two-Four' in some parts of Canada, a name that refers both to the date around which the holiday falls (May 24th) and Canadian slang for a case of twenty-four beers (a "two-four"), a drink popular during the long weekend. As it always falls on a Monday, leading to a long weekend, it may also be known as 'May Long' or 'May Run'.
The British queen was born on May 24, 1819. She was a reigning monarch (Queen) for 63 years, seven months and two days. Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845. At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks and cannon salutes. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day. It was decided that the day would be celebrated on the penultimate (second last) Monday in May.

Mother's day Surprise Ideas Lockdown Edition
Flowers Most people love receiving flowers, and mothers are no exception to this! Take this opportunity to pop to a florist or a supermarket, pick up your mum’s favourite combination of flowers and colours, and brighten up her living space. If you want something that will last a little longer than flowers, consider buying a house plant or her favourite rose bush for the garden.
Get some fresh air on a walk, hike or bike ride Depending on where you’re doing your Mother’s Day lockdown, this is a great way to get outside and change up the scenery whilst doing something for Mother’s Day. Take a coffee on a morning walk with your mum, or if your local restrictions allow you to do so, get active in the fresh air with a day hike or a bike ride.
May 9th
Have a girly sleepover or movie night Put on some snuggly PJs, make the living room all cosy – you could even make a den! – and snuggle up with your favourite movie. You could watch on a laptop, on the TV, or on a projector. Having a projector at home is a gamechanger for movie night. Invest in one, not only for Mother’s Day but for yearround movie nights. All you then need is to connect to your phone / laptop, bring up Netflix or a streaming platform of your choice and then buy your Mum’s favourite treats. Go to town and buy some cute popcorn holders too!If you don’t fancy a movie, then one of the benefits of lockdown has been the amount of theatre productions and comedy shows that we are able to watch (live or not) now too! If you’re celebrating Mother’s Day in lockdown, you can watch the same thing while you’re on a video call, laughing and commenting together or quoting the same lines from your favourite film as you watch.
Leave post it notes of all the things you love about your mum in all the places she will go in the house. Everyone loves thoughtful but cheap Mother’s Day gifts, like this idea. Buy a sharpie, a pack of post-its and go crazy. Write whatever comes to mind: memories, reasons you love them, things you are grateful for, things you appreciate. Leave them in places along their routine path e.g. on the bathroom mirror, on the toilet roll, in the wardrobe… You can even leave some with the breakfast or brunch you make them! Give them as many reasons as you can think of to light up with love.
Wrap up warm, get hot chocolate goodies and have a fire pit session There’s nothing cosier than a touch of cold air and an excuse to snuggle up to your nearest and dearest. We missed out on firework displays this year but it doesn’t mean you can’t take the energy and create it in your garden. Wrap up warm, make your favourite drinks, get a fire pit and some marshmallows to toast, perhaps some fireworks too and snuggle up with your mum beneath the night sky. This is where my favourite conversations happen: from reminiscing on childhood memories, to putting the world to rights and planning more future adventures together.
Get competitive in a Games Night If you and your mum enjoy playing games, then spending some quality time and getting competitive makes for the perfect Mother’s Day at home! Whether you enjoy board games such as Monopoly or card games such as UNO and DOS, there are loads of games to choose from and many of them can be played online too!
Virtual Breakfast Date If you aren’t able to make it home to have breakfast with your mom, you can schedule a facetime or zoom call while you both enjoy some breakfast and have a nice chat.
Cook Together One way to show your love on Mother’s Day is to spend time by doing something together. You could get all the stuff to make homemade pizzas together, you could do a course each and make a Mexican feast. If you’re celebrating Mother’s Day in lockdown from a distance, you could cook the same thing over Zoom, sharing recipe tips and then eat together. If you don’t fancy cooking but want to share dinner tonight, why not get the same takeout and enjoy it while you chat on a video call.
TOP 5 BIKING TRAILS IN TORONTO Toronto Islands The Toronto Island is a short ferry ride from the city. The bike path on the island is a beautiful trail to explore. Ride around the island and enjoy the breathtaking Toronto skyline. Avoid this trail during the weekends because the tourists may get in your way, but during the week there's enough room to get around.
High Park If you enjoy nature rides, High park is the perfect place to go. It's one of the biggest parks in the city with off trail roads, paved walkways and a wooden board walk to explore this beautiful area.
Wilket Creek Park This 44-hectare park has a bike trail that is over 2km long. The Toronto Botanical Garden is along the way for you to check out during your trip. The path will eventually lead to the Tommy Thompson trail.
Rosedale Valley Road and Bayview Multi-Use Trail Start by travelling southeast on Rosedale Valley Road, where you'll be mostly covered by the stunning tree canopy before passing under the Bloor Viaduct and head towards Bayview. From there you can wind alongside the Don towards the Brick Works or Pottery Road.
Martin Goodman Trail Most people just call this the Waterfront Trail, and for good reason: this is a sprawling route that runs, for the most part, right beside the lake. Highlights include Humber Bay Shores, Marilyn Bell Park and the Eastern Beaches.
