FALLING INTO A ROUTINE September is over. You’ve gone to your first classes of the year. You’ve met new people. You’ve explored our neighborhood. You’ve mastered the universe (okay, maybe not that one). But, the fact remains that you have accomplished a lot in one short month. Take time to celebrate! Grab a bubble tea with new friends. Start a study group and meet in one of our awesome study lounges. As the weather starts to cool down and pumpkin spice fills the air, this school year will bring new challenges. Midterms, relationships issues, and stress are all obstacles that you may face. Look for advice in our “Dear WISEONE” column and remember that your don is great resource as well. RESIDENTS OF CAMPUSONE Saad Nasr, a first-year U of T architecture student from Jordan, says breaking out of your comfort zone is a “real challenge for many international students.” “As an international student… I can say they don’t always feel comfortable with other groups of people. My advice is to break out of your comfort zone and try to make friends with people from other cultures.” Adapting to a new country while also transitioning into university is undoubtedly difficult. Nasr recommends approaching students in the cafeteria to make new friends. “I can assure you your new comfort zone will… open up new places and spaces,” said Nasr.

DEAR WISEONE Dear WISEONE, My partner and I have been dating since Grade 11. We’ve told each other ‘I love you’ and we decided to stay together despite going to university in different countries. Recently, one of my roommates told me her friend had been ‘Turkey Dumped.’ Now, I’m worried that my partner is thinking of dumping me! We’ve been distant lately, but I chalked it up to adjusting to university. What do I do? Sincerely, Down in the Turkey Dumps Turkey Dump refers to the relationship phenomenon that first year university students with high school sweethearts

often experience. High school relationships sometimes don’t survive the transition to university, whether they are long distance or not. That doesn’t mean your relationship is doomed for a Thanksgiving demise. Take this time to evaluate your relationship. Is it still a supportive relationship or is it held together by familiarity? Don’t be afraid to communicate with your partner and make a decision that is healthy for the two of you. Dear WISEONE, Midterms. I hear the word and my hands start to shake. I’m going to class and paying attention, but I never really had to study in high school. I’m unsure where to start. I’m

terrified that my professors will think I am stupid! Sincerely, Is it Too Late to Drop Out? You are not alone. It is very normal to see grades drop from high school. University requires different and improved skills – time management, selfdirection, and effective study techniques. Universities are aware of this and have resources in place. Check with your advisor or registrar about the academic support services available to you. Have a question for WISEONE? Ask it by clicking here.
