Report from Board Chair and CEO In 2012, 23,300 people in BC and the Yukon were diagnosed with cancer. With the support of our dedicated donors and volunteers, we’ve made remarkable progress against the disease, improving the lives of people facing cancer. We’re setting a foundation for a future where we change cancer forever. We remain steadfast in our commitment to fund groundbreaking research that is changing the way cancer is prevented, diagnosed and treated. At the same time, our reach in communities across BC and the Yukon, and our commitment to improve the quality of life of cancer patients, has shaped the Society’s role over the past 75 years. The stories in the following pages are snapshots of the experiences of people who have joined us in the fight against cancer to change lives and move us closer to a day when no Canadian need fear a cancer diagnosis. We are preventing cancer. From our investment in the innovative Cancer Prevention Centre to our funding for research that focuses on risk reduction and our advocacy and education campaigns, we are dedicated to helping Canadians stop cancer before it starts. We are funding life-saving research. Our funding has led to breakthroughs and successes that have accelerated the pace of discovery. World-class researchers here in BC, such as Dr David Huntsman and Dr Torsten Nielsen, are working hard to reduce cancer incidence and deaths and improve patient quality of life.

02

We are easing the burden for cancer patients. We were thrilled to complete the construction of the Kordyban Lodge in Prince George. This lodge is a great achievement and physical example of our commitment to provide support and compassion to cancer patients and their families. In fact, in 2012, we provided practical and emotional assistance to more than 12,500 people across BC and the Yukon. We are your best partner in the fight for life. For 75 years, with generous donors and volunteers by our side, we have led the fight against all cancers. With your support and confidence, we will continue to fund groundbreaking research, advocate for healthy public policy, provide information about cancer and prevention and support those living with and beyond cancer. We know there will be challenges ahead, but we want British Columbians and Yukoners to know that we are with them in the fight for life. Thank you for your support.

Meet

carolyn As the Canadian Cancer Society Chair in Cancer Primary Prevention at the University of British Columbia, Dr Gotay is building a network of researchers, community and healthcare organizations and policy-makers to work together to prevent cancer.

When I tell people that about half of cancer cases could be prevented, they are generally quite shocked. Most people think it is all due to genetics – things outside their control. But actually, many cancers can be prevented by changing our lifestyles.

Her work at the innovative Cancer Prevention Centre, a partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and the University of British Columbia, includes research that informs programs and policies to help people reduce their cancer risk by addressing lifestyle, occupational and environmental factors.

04

With funding from the Society, Dr Gotay and her team hope to learn more about the link between shift work and breast cancer. Studies have shown that women who do shift work at night are at increased risk of the disease. This project is an important step towards developing an effective program to reduce cancer risk for shiftworkers.

Taking the lead to prevent cancer The Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon Division continues to be a leader in cancer prevention in Canada. Our focus on health education, community action, advocacy and research are helping to stop cancer before it starts. • Our workplace wellness program, WellnessFits, received additional funding from Healthy Families BC. More than 200 businesses accessed the program’s resources, bringing health and wellness information to 1,780 employees. • Skin cancer is one of the most common, yet most preventable, cancers. Our advocacy efforts contributed to province-wide legislation to restrict youth under 18 from indoor tanning beds. Our sun awareness programs, including Tanning is Out on the beach and Tan-Free Grads, reached almost 6,000 high school students. • Our continued focus on smoke-free bylaws led to a Union of BC Municipalities endorsement of our call for smoke-free outdoor spaces. We also made significant strides in the fight to ban the cosmetic use of pesticides, bringing the number of municipalities enacting a cosmetic pesticide ban to a total of 40 communities.

Staff at the Fairmont Waterfront practice yoga on the hotel roof as part of their Wellness Fits physical activity challenge. The hotel is just one of over 200 businesses participating in the program.

• Our health promotion teams worked with communities across BC and the Yukon, reaching over 160,000 people through the delivery of life-saving risk reduction initiatives.

In 1966, with the growing awareness of the link between tobacco and lung cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society issued our first policy statement on smoking. Since then, as our commitment to addressing the dangers of tobacco has grown, smoking rates have fallen. Today only 14% of the provincial adult population smokes.

Meet

torsten & david Dr Torsten Nielsen (left) and Dr David Huntsman represent the best and brightest in cancer research. These BC researchers each received $1.25 million Impact Grants from the Society. They were also recognized nationally in 2012 for excellence and the potential of their projects in the fight against cancer. Dr Nielsen, an international leader in the development of new diagnostic tools and tests that lead to improved treatments, was the co-recipient of the Canadian Cancer Society Bernard and Francine Dorval Prize. Dr Huntsman, a leader in the field of genetic mutations, was awarded the William E Rawls Prize for his notable contributions to the genetics of familial gastric cancers and ovarian cancer.

The community of cancer researchers is close. We are all committed to the same purpose — saving lives as soon as possible. The big breakthroughs are usually based on shared knowledge and the inspiration that comes from close collaboration.  06

Saving lives through research Thanks to research, we know more about what causes cancer, how best to prevent and treat it and how we can improve the quality of life of cancer patients. Today, about 60% of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive compared to about 25% in the early 1940s when we started funding research. • The Canadian Cancer Society funded more than $46 million in leading-edge research, supporting close to 300 projects across the country. Here in BC and the Yukon, $5.6 million was invested in cancer research with grants awarded to 12 projects at leading research centres. • In 2012, the Society unveiled a new grant-funding structure intended to align our research investment with our strategic goals. • Our Impact Grants fund the most promising cancer science in the country. This new funding program encourages scientists to accelerate the application of new knowledge to address problems in cancer research. These grants have the potential to improve patient quality of life and reduce cancer incidence and deaths.

Dr Joan Bottorff’s prevention research around men’s health in Northern BC is helping extend reach in northern communities through the Harmonization Project.

• Our new Innovation Grants are designed to support unconventional research that will change how we think about cancer. With the support of the Society, BC researcher Dr Colin Collins is developing a novel and sophisticated computer program to help identify tumour-specific biomarkers and potential drug targets for prostate cancer. • Our new Multisector Team Grants in Prevention Research are designed to encourage more direct links between research, policy and practice. The Harmonization Project (a collaborative effort between the Society, Northern Health and the BC Cancer Agency) is helping extend our reach in Northern BC and funding studies such as smoking cessation and men’s health with Dr Joan Bottorff.

Since the 1940s, the Canadian Cancer Society has invested more than a billion dollars in outstanding cancer research that has saved and improved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Dr Colin Collins, a 2012 Innovation Grant recipient, has developed a computer program to speed up analyzing genes from prostate cancer.

Meet

karl Over 30 years ago, a biopsy showed that Karl Mast had a benign growth in his prostate. Last year, his doctors recommended that it was time to seek treatment for his slow growing cancer. Eighty-one year old Karl had to travel from Smithers to Prince George for six weeks of radiation therapy. When his treatment began, Karl became the first guest to benefit from the new Kordyban Lodge. For cancer patients like Karl who must travel a great distance to get to treatment, Canadian Cancer Society lodges offer a welcoming place to stay.

This place is wonderful, the building itself is so nice, it makes you feel comfortable. It’s just one minute to walk to the clinic, it’s unbelievable.

Over the past year, the Canadian Cancer Society completed construction on the Kordyban Lodge in Prince George. This modern facility, spanning 25,000 square feet and including 36 beds, brings tremendous support much closer to home for Northerners on a cancer journey.

08

Supporting people facing a cancer journey The Canadian Cancer Society provides vital information and compassionate support services to cancer patients and their families. The challenges of a cancer diagnosis are practical, physical, emotional, social and financial. Our range of services help to ensure no one faces these challenges alone. • Our Cancer Information Service helps Canadians take control of their health by providing personalized, comprehensive and reliable cancer information. Our trained information specialists responded to 6,774 inquiries by phone and email. • Our CancerConnection service connected 706 people living with cancer in BC and the Yukon with trained volunteers who have survived cancer themselves to provide compassion and support. • Volunteer drivers from the Society and the Freemasons transported over 4,500 clients to cancer treatment centres in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna. The popular service will be expanded to Prince George in 2013. • Close to 3,500 clients stayed at our Canadian Cancer Society lodges while undergoing treatment in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna.

As early as the 1940s the Canadian Cancer Society provided services and programs for people living with cancer. By the end of the 1970s these programs included a wide range of services from transportation to emotional support.

Meet

bill

For more than 20 years, Bill Goodsir has dedicated his time and expertise to the Canadian Cancer Society. Retired from a career in hospital planning and construction, Bill joined the Society as a volunteer in the early 1990s when he took an advisory role on the construction of the Southern Interior Rotary Lodge in Kelowna. Since then he has supervised every building project in BC and the Yukon, including the recent construction of the Kordyban Lodge in Prince George.

Working with the Society on these projects gave me an opportunity to do something rewarding during my retirement. I gained a great deal of personal satisfaction from bringing each project to its conclusion.

Volunteers like Bill are essential to our efforts in the fight against cancer. Thousands of people across BC and the Yukon donated their time and energy this past year to make an impact in the fight for life. With opportunities including fundraising, advocating for healthy public policies and supporting people with cancer, there is no shortage of ways to make a difference in the lives of Canadians.

10

Volunteers leading the fight for life Our compassionate volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. They are critical to our progress in the fight for life and we would not be able to support, inform and empower those touched by cancer without them. • Following recruitment campaigns, we increased the number of volunteers supporting our efforts by 10% to almost 17,000. • For cancer patients and their families, our volunteers extend a lifeline by helping deliver practical and emotional support services. Generous volunteers across BC and the Yukon gave their time to drive patients to treatment, offered compassion and support over the phone and in person and provided comfort at our lodges and at Camp Goodtimes. • The Society implemented a new Volunteer Engagement Framework to increase our reach and capacity in 2012. This included the establishment of regional service teams and our ongoing delivery of training modules to enhance the skills of key volunteers.

The Sirf Dus, or “Tell 10,” initiative helped break through cultural barriers about talking about cancer in the South Asian community. Volunteers spread the word about the importance of screening.

• Marlene Cuthbert, a volunteer from the Okanagan, received the Society’s national Medal of Courage. Marlene is a breast cancer survivor who was recognized for her outstanding service as a CancerConnection volunteer. The Medal of Courage is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated exceptional courage in their personal battle with cancer. In doing so, they serve as an inspiration and role model to others.

In 1946, the Canadian Cancer Society’s first door-to-door residential campaign in April was launched across Canada. Since then, thousands of Society volunteers have joined us each Daffodil Month to raise funds that support our efforts in the fight against cancer.

Marlene Cuthbert received the Society’s national Medal of Courage for her outstanding contributions as a CancerConnection volunteer. In her role she supports those with advanced cancer.

Meet

bonnie After her aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, Bonnie Mah was determined to find a way to fight back against the disease that devastated her family. As a sensible businesswoman, Bonnie considered her giving options and became the youngest person to make a gift of life insurance to the Canadian Cancer Society. Fifteen years later, her dedication to the Society and the fight against cancer has only grown stronger. Bonnie recently increased her legacy with a second gift.

Since my aunt’s passing, sadly, many of my friends have been devastated by cancer. I knew it was time to make a new legacy. I encourage everyone to consider making a planned gift and feel the same sense of satisfaction that we are doing something that will make a difference in the long term.

12

Legacy gifts are one way that our donors make a meaningful impact in the fight for life. By dedicating a future gift to the Canadian Cancer Society, donors provide a steady, ongoing stream of funds available for our commitment to creating a future where no Canadian fears cancer.

Dedicated donors helping us do more Our generous donors across BC and the Yukon make the Canadian Cancer Society their cancer charity of choice because they know every dollar they donate helps save lives and support those living with cancer. • Despite continued challenging economic conditions, our supportive donors helped to raise $30 million in revenues. • It was an exceptional year for planned giving with $8.7 million in gifts. The registry of planned gifts has topped $50 million, helping to ensure a healthy financial future for the Society. • More than $5 million was raised through Relay For Life, our inspirational overnight fundraising event. Over 14,000 participants joined together with almost 2,000 cancer survivors at 48 events to celebrate, remember and fight back.

Our Daffodil Campaign staff and volunteers hit the streets in April with the ever-popular daffodil pins.

• Cops for Cancer, our community-based event engaging police officers and other emergency services in the fight against cancer, continues to grow with revenue reaching $2.4 million. • Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC), an organization dedicated to mobilizing the Canadian insurance industry to raise funds for cancer research, contributed a remarkable $1 million to the Society. • We are so grateful to our donors who give in so many ways – online, by mail, in memoriam and in honour gifts, through corporations and foundations. More than 160,000 people in BC and the Yukon made a donation to the Society in 2012.

In 1999 the Canadian Cancer Society introduced its first Relay For Life event. Relay is now the Society’s national signature event, with almost 500 events raising more than $50 million annually. Each year, Canadians come together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones and fight back against the disease.

CEO, Barbara Kaminsky (front right), receives a $1 million gift intended for cancer research from the Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade.

Financial highlights For the period February 1, 2012 to January 31, 2013.

30

The impact of cancer is enormous and it takes a considerable investment to make progress in the fight against these devastating diseases. In 2012 – 2013, the BC and Yukon raised total revenues of just over $35 million to that end.

We spent just over $4.5 million on supporting expenditures which includes those fundraising and administrative costs that support the Society and its programs in a cost-effective manner while maximizing all opportunities to further mission.

The Canadian Cancer Society raises funds and spends them for one reason only — to fulfill our mission of eradicating cancer and improving the lives of people with cancer. From last year, we were able to increase our direct spending on important mission initiatives including investing in outstanding research, delivering support programs and advocacy initiatives to approximately $20 million. Aside from regular operations, we invested another $10 million in the construction of the new Kordyban Lodge.

Last year our donors and supporters made us the Canadian cancer charity of choice. We make every effort to be transparent and accountable by providing detailed financial statements at cancer.ca.

Through our many diverse fundraising initiatives we raised $30 million and had impact in almost every community across BC and the Yukon through our signature event, the Relay For Life, our Daffodil and annual campaigns and other special events. This year there was a 25% increase in our Major and Planned Gifts, raising $9 million — the highest amount on record. Pledge installments continue from our Capital Campaign, which raised over $12 million. (Approximately $1 million was received in 2012 – 2013.)

Scott Marks

The increase in prevention and advocacy spending is bringing clear benefits to communities across the province through programs like WellnessFits and Tanning is Out. BC reported the lowest cancer incidence and mortality rates in Canada in 2012. Our work with government is resulting in policies that make healthier choices easier choices.
