A Look into the Future

40% Increase in the number of new cancer cases in Canada in the next 15 years

This increase is largely due to the aging population (1 in 4 Canadians will be 65 years or older)

?? ?

Although the number of cases will increase, the risk of getting cancer is not expected to change significantly

Ontario’s need for cancer support will increase dramatically in the near future. Your support today is vital for a better tomorrow.

Survivors Among Us Diana Merino is a two-time cancer survivor. In 2000, after developing swollen lymph nodes in her neck, Diana was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at age 12. Diana underwent six months of treatment that involved chemotherapy and radiation. At this time, she and her family were new arrivals to Canada, having recently emigrated from their native Peru. The family turned to the Canadian Cancer Society for help. “The Canadian Cancer Society helped me get to my treatment and checkup appointments. At that time, my family only had one car, which my father needed for work,” said Diana. “Having volunteers drive us was extremely helpful. It meant that I could relax on my way to my appointments. The volunteer drivers were always so nice and approachable and went out of their way to help me feel comfortable.”

Research In Your Backyard Dr Alberto Martin and his team at the University of Toronto have been studying how genetics, diet and gut bacteria work together to promote the development of colon cancer. They found that gut bacteria can manipulate carbohydrates in the diet, fuelling colon cancer development in mouse models. This discovery suggests that people who are at high risk of colon cancer may be able to reduce their risk by reducing carbohydrates in their diet or by treating gut bacteria with antibiotics.
