“My wife used CancerConnection.ca to ask the questions that I couldn’t bring myself to ask.” Mark Simmons Summerside, Prince Edward Island
Mark Simmons was diagnosed with testicular cancer shortly after burying his mother, who died of breast cancer. At the same time, his aunt was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He was afraid and worried for his own family – just as his mother must have been during her 14-year struggle. With 3 different cancer diagnoses in his family, he needed more information about different cancers, including his own. His wife, Julie, went to the Society’s online community – CancerConnection.ca – and found the stories and answers they needed. This, plus playtime with his 2 young daughters, helped him get through and live life fully.

Executive Summary
Facing cancer without fear – the future is closer than ever.
prevention a priority with the ongoing support of our Cancer Prevention Centre.
Thanks to your generosity, we are building a future founded on research that will change the way cancer is diagnosed and treated.
We were there for families and individuals facing cancer – in 2014 we provided close to 20,000 people in British Columbia and the Yukon with trusted information and support.
Perhaps even more exciting is how we are creating a future where a focus on prevention may eliminate almost half of the 200,000 cancer cases diagnosed in Canada every year. And a future where our community and government leaders continue to provide better, healthier public policy so we can all live longer, healthier lives.
Andrew Hazlewood, Chair, Board of Directors, Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon
Barbara Kaminsky, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon
Your support also brings hope to people going through cancer right now. By funding the Society’s emotional and practical support programs like Camp Goodtimes, CancerConnection and free transportation to cancer treatments, you’re letting them know they aren’t alone. In 2014, we made significant investments in leading-edge cancer research and made cancer
And we’ve seen great progress with our advocacy to government around taxing cigarettes and limiting youth access to electronic cigarettes. We’ve also developed important partnerships, like the fund-matching with Brain Canada, to ensure your donor dollars work harder and go further. Thank you for supporting the Canadian Cancer Society. Together, we are working towards a future where no Canadian fears cancer. We’re making progress and with your help, this future is closer than ever.

2014 Highlights
In 2014, the Society invested $37 million in donor dollars to support innovative research projects across Canada. More than $5.6 million went to researchers right here in BC. Our commitment focuses on basic, biomedical and translational research that promises better treatments and diagnoses, but we don’t stop there. A full 25% of funding in 2014 went towards projects in prevention, risk reduction and quality of life research, important areas that will help stop cancer before it starts and offer a better future for life after cancer.
Dr Poul Sorensen
BC researcher
In 2014, the Society and Brain Canada joined forces in the largest partnership investment in brain cancer ever made by the Society. Every donation directed to Impact Grants focused on brain cancer up until January 2016 will be matched dollar for dollar by Brain Canada. BC researcher, Dr Poul Sorensen, and his work on hard to treat childhood brain tumours, was one of the first investigators to be funded. Several other BC projects were named in the Top 10 Society-funded research for 2014. Including Dr Samuel Aparicio and Dr Sohrab Shah whose important discoveries are shedding light on how cancer cells evolve in tumours, an investigation that promises to provide new options for targeted treatments. Another top BC researcher, Dr Stuart Peacock is leading a study comparing the lower costs of early detection for those at high risk for lung cancer to the higher price of advanced lung cancer treatment. The study provides important information for policymakers considering the value of lung cancer screening programs.

Prevention/Advocacy The Society looks forward to a future where no Canadian fears cancer. Today, of the nearly 200,000 cancer cases diagnosed each year, about half could be prevented. By focusing on prevention, including health education, community action and advocacy, we can help reduce the impact of cancer now and in the future.
2014 Highlights Our health promotion teams urged youth to know the risks of flavoured tobacco, raising awareness through social media, presentations to youth groups and engaging youth and parents at community events across the province. A thought-provoking social marketing campaign called “#endtheflavour” worked to raise awareness about the perils of candy- and fruit-flavoured tobacco.
In 2014 the BC government responded to the Society’s call for higher tobacco taxes with an increase of $3.20 per carton and thanks in part to our economic analysis on how increased taxes can contribute to cancer prevention, a significant portion of revenue from increased tobacco taxes was pledged to reinforce cancer prevention initiatives. The BC government confirmed a grant of $12.5 million to support the future construction of the Cancer Prevention Centre. This endorsement is a great boost to the development of a first-of-its-kind centre in Vancouver that will serve as a national resource of innovation and discovery for the entire country. 2014 also marked the fourth year for our workplace wellness program, WellnessFits. A partnership with the Ministry of Health, this popular program can be scaled to suit any sized workplace and was utilized by 140 new businesses last year.

“Thank you for the amazing experience. I felt like my family was receiving a huge group hug during our whole stay. ” – Camp Goodtimes camper
Support The Society provides the emotional and practical support services people facing cancer need, where and when they need it. From Camp Goodtimes and CancerConnection to affordable accommodation, transportation to treatment and our toll-free information line available in several languages, patients and their caregivers looking for support trust the Society to be there for them.
2014 Highlights For 30 years, Camp Goodtimes has provided children with cancer and their families with a safe, empowering summer camp experience. In 2014,
377 children attended Camp at idyllic Loon Lake in Maple Ridge, BC. In British Columbia and the Yukon, 986 people living with cancer received one-on-one emotional support from a CancerConnection volunteer last year. CancerConnection provides emotional support from someone who has been there. Clients are matched based on similar diagnosis or treatment or other factors important to them. Our 4 cancer lodges, located in Prince George, Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria served as a home away from home for over 6,400 people in 2014. Kordyban Lodge, our newest facility in Prince George, has also become a central meeting place for support and prevention activities in the region. In partnership with the Freemasons Cancer Car Program, the Society provided over 50,000 rides to people undergoing cancer treatment in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George.

Volunteering in the dining hall at Camp Goodtimes was a life-changing experience for me and now I go back every year. When I was first diagnosed with cancer I also used CancerConnection and the program volunteers really helped. As someone who has seen both sides – as a client and a volunteer, I know the amazing benefit provided by the Society’s volunteers.
– Alex Van, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor and volunteer
Volunteers Canadian Cancer Society volunteers are essential to the work we do. Our volunteers lend their hearts and hands to help raise funds to fight cancer and to support and inform people living with cancer. We work hard to make the volunteer experience as meaningful and rewarding as possible and every year volunteers join us to make a positive impact, be part of a team and learn new skills.
2014 Highlights In 2014, close to 15,000 people volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society in a variety of positions. From door-to-door fundraising to running community offices to driving patients to treatment or offering emotional support to people with cancer, the Society provides our volunteers many different opportunities to make a difference in the lives of people with cancer.
The Society provided a number of training and skill development opportunities for our volunteers in 2014, including a comprehensive Leadership Training Certificate with modules in collaboration, delegation, coaching, providing feedback and resolving conflict. We hosted Volunteer Summits in Prince George, Cranbrook, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Langley. The theme was Celebrating Successes and the events were great opportunities for key volunteers to share experiences and collaborate with fellow volunteers in their region. The summits also provided the Society with a forum to celebrate and recognize volunteer contributions and show them the results of their efforts.

Giving
Thanks to our generous donors, the Canadian Cancer Society is able to make more impact in more communities against more cancers than any other charity. In the BC and Yukon Division, over 127,000 people and organizations gave $23.4 million in 2014.
2014 Highlights 2014 marked the 17th year of our partnership with Coast Capital Savings, a relationship that began with the very first Cops for Cancer Tour. In that time, thanks to the efforts of their staff and members, Coast Capital Savings has raised more than $2 million towards pediatric cancer research and support programs. As the official Tour Sponsor of Tour de Rock, Tour de Valley and Tour de Coast, Coast Capital Savings has been integral to the ongoing success of Cops for Cancer here in BC.
13
Last year, the Cops for Cancer Tours saw hundreds of law enforcement and emergency services personnel cycle across the daunting terrain of Vancouver Island, Northern BC, the British Columbia coast and the Fraser Valley to bring in close to $2.3 million. Relay For Life, the Society’s signature fundraising event, raised over $3.6 million in 2014. More than 10,500 participants came together at 44 community events and 8 youth events across BC and the Yukon. The city of Prince George claimed the title of Number One Relay For Life in Canada after raising $600,000 in the 2014 season. Daffodil Month continues to grow. The daffodil pin, which originated here in BC, was available at retail partner locations across the province in April. In addition our volunteers canvassed door-to-door and sold fresh flowers all in the name of raising funds to support people living with cancer and contributing to annual giving revenues of $7.7 million.
