I still remember the first time I put glasses on, in my early twenties, and realized I could actually see more clearly. I hadn't realized how fuzzy things had become, how indistinct certain contours, how illegible certain signs. How difficult to read the world truly was. But glasses fixed all that, and I managed to get through a number of years thinking I could see. Today, many, many years later and even with glasses constantly poised on my nose, the world presents itself as increasingly out of focus, hard to read, impossible to understand. Mostly, the world confounds me. I try so very hard to decipher it, try to make sense, but mostly fail.

Perhaps surprisingly, what helps most is the theatre, the capacity of the theatre to focus in on essential questions that truly do affect the way we perceive and lead our lives. What helps most are the artists who, like myself, have that obtuse faith that, though answers there may not be, good questions are always worth asking, new glasses worth trying on, new perspectives and new interpretations worth examining.

Interpreting our times - that is what we do daily at Canadian Stage, accompanied by an extended family of brilliantly imaginative, uncompromisingly demanding, surprisingly funny, devastatingly moving storytellers. They have at their disposal an arsenal of lenses, each of which enables us to see the world with new insight, deeply authentic sensations.
This season, from Jordan Tannahill's exploration of the world of alliances and exclusion seen through the eyes of adolescents as they enter it, Concord Floral, Nick Payne's poetic florescence of the infiniteness of possible destinies, Constellations, Nino Haratischwili's searing portrayal of the disproportionate relationship between art and love, Liv Stein, Guillermo Calderón's labyrinthine puzzle about divergent political realities and their impact across the continents, Kiss, we are given many new ways in which to see the ever-transient world which is ours.
Interpreting our times - that is what we do daily at Canadian Stage
But there is also the charismatic intimacy of Daniel MacIvor, Samuel Beckett's ever-graceful, subtly humoristic nod at impossibility, the intricate polyphony of Bill Coleman and Gordon Monahan.
Our ongoing discovery of great theatre from across the country and around the world - and within the context of Canada's 150th anniversary celebrations - this year includes a special Saison du Québec: the hypnotic marvels of Robert Lepage's autobiographical remembrance of growing up in Quebec City, the ever-provocative, ever-sensual artistry of Marie Chouinard and, well, the simply unbelievable exploits of Cirque Éloize's masterful Cirkopolis. And to complete this focus on Quebec, we're performing Guillaume Corbeil's sumptuous yet acute look at contemporary urban life, Five Faces for Evelyn Frost, in an historic coproduction with the Théâtre français de Toronto. Spotlight Australia will offer us five new productions from our mirrored nation of the southern hemisphere, a country whose foundation and history are so very close to, yet so radically different from our own, and whose artists have distinguished themselves with a deeply personal, incisively poetic view of history and the world in the making. Even as we celebrate one hundred and fifty years of nationhood, Canadian Stage continues to push each boundary we encounter, to engage our country with the world through the eyes and acts of today's most innovative artists, and to share with open arms and untold delight every moment of our exploration. Let's do it together. MATTHEW JOCELYN Artistic and General Director 5
Concord Floral is a one million-square-foot abandoned greenhouse and hangout for neighbourhood teens. When two friends stumble upon a terrible secret buried there, they go looking for answers and set off a chain of events that can’t be stopped. Told by an ensemble of teenage performers and set in contemporary Vaughan, Concord Floral re-imagines Boccaccio’s medieval allegory The Decameron, in which ten teens must flee a mysterious plague they have brought upon themselves.

Choice and destiny collide in British theatre luminary Nick Payne’s startlingly original play about the infinite possibilities of love (and the quantum multiverse). A man and a woman’s chance encounter sets off a singular chain of events where each path they might take shapes an entirely different future. Their sweeping and spellbinding romantic journey will defy the boundaries of the world we think we know. Director Peter Hinton brings his awardwinning vision to this five-star West End and Broadway hit.

Prolific Canadian dancer/choreographer Bill Coleman (Older & Reckless) confronts a series of almost biblical challenges in this cataclysmic new tap piece about a man out of sync with his surroundings. Objects fall, shatter and move of their own accord creating a unique soundscape that accompanies one man’s descent into chaos. Coleman, a master performer, plays the role of modern fakir as he navigates through situations, at times verging on the comic, culminating in a hypnotic symphony of sight and sound created and performed in collaboration with celebrated composer Gordon Monahan.

On the weekend of January 11, 2004, celebrated American monologist Spalding Gray ended his life by jumping off the Staten Island Ferry in New York. That same weekend on the other side of the country, Daniel MacIvor was spending three days in California in a series of sessions with a man who had offered to save MacIvor’s life. Linking these two real stories is a wholly original fiction about truth, lies and the four most important things in life. Candid and darkly funny, Who Killed Spalding Gray? reunites Daniel MacIvor, one of Canada’s foremost playwrights, with longtime collaborator, director Daniel Brooks (2012’s RACE and 2014’s The Other Place).

Music is the only thing that matters in the life of celebrated concert pianist Liv Stein. When her son Henri dies, she gives it all up - the piano, her career, her marriage, herself. But the unexpected visit of a young promising piano student claiming to have shared Henri’s last couple of years forces Liv to face past demons she is trying to forget. A pact is made that seems to reawaken Liv’s will to live… Canadian Stage Artistic and General Director Matthew Jocelyn directs this exquisitely crafted and hauntingly poetic drama by one of the most prodigious young voices in German theatre.

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE Two couples meet for dinner to take their minds off the war raging around them. An unexpected profession of love, an untimely proposal, and one kiss later, one of the foursome lies dead on the floor. Chilean playwright Guillermo Calderón’s newest play breaks open cultural barriers as a group of western actors interpreting a Syrian play slowly realize the limits of their own understanding, and the suffocating effect of an oppressive, omnipresent regime. For its second year in residency at the Berkeley Street Theatre, Theatre Smash (2015’s Das Ding (The Thing)) joins forces with ARC and Canadian Stage to present a work essential to our time.

Beginning with his childhood growing up in 1960s Quebec City, Lepage plunges us into the depths of his past, distilling his most intimate of recollections into a multi-layered story that reveals the historical and social reality that shaped his identity. The awe-inspiring power, riveting virtuosity and creative heart of Circa’s acrobatics. The sublime soul of Monteverdi’s operatic music. From the Australian company that has transformed contemporary circus comes another genredefying show, celebrating the expressive possibilities of the human body pushed to extremes. Thousands of dedicated hours are expended by the Canadian Stage staff, our volunteers and supporters to ensure that the reach of our programming does not meet the impediment of access, price, understanding, or border. The lens we apply to our ancillary activities - educational, artistic, or donor-focused - is simple: does this further our engagement in the now - the now of our intimate and collective, national and international lives? I invite you to learn more about the many carefully crafted barrierfree programs and donor opportunities designed to offer an enriched experience commensurate with the wonder and challenge of Matthew Jocelyn’s artistic vision. We have developed these not just for tomorrow’s theatre-goers and makers, but for everyone who is curious. I am humbled by the extraordinary reach that the art on our stages has inspired in areas of support and audience engagement across all our platforms. I invite you to reward your curiosity and join us, our artists and your peers on this most ambitious of seasons.
Challenge us so we can challenge you. Connect, converse and engage with Canadian Stage performance creators and unique thinkers throughout the season. PRE-SHOW CHATS Join us before the show for a free, informal presentation led by artists, academics and subject matter experts. Learn more about the themes of season performances and the work that goes into a production. On select evenings at both the Bluma Appel and Berkeley Street Theatres.

Canadian Stage is so much more than what you see on our stages. As you contemplate the offerings we have assembled for the 16.17 season, it is my pleasure to share with you the complementary work that surrounds our programming.
POST-SHOW TALKBACKS Take part in a post-performance Q&A with a selection of cast members, directors and/or designers. Talkbacks are held after Wednesday matinee and Thursday evening performances at both the Bluma Appel and Berkeley Street Theatres. INTERMISSION A pop-up post-show discussion series that explores the themes and ideas presented at Canadian Stage, drawing connections to our culture in unexpected ways. Curtains close, minds open. UNDER 30? See any Canadian Stage show for as little as $15 with C-Stage. No catch. Check out details online. View the performance schedules at canadianstage.com to find out the dates of these events.
