Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Canadian Stage has four homes spread across our great city. The Bluma Appel and the Berkeley Street Complex bookend the vibrant St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood and run along what was once the shore of Lake Ontario. Our beautiful High Park Amphitheatre is nestled within the grassy mounds and forests of our city’s most beloved park. Our most recent addition, the Winter Garden Theatre, is located right in the bustling downtown core. Canadian Stage is grateful to be able to tell our stories on this bountiful land that we all share.
This sacred land has held story for thousands of years: stories that live in the fabric of who we are as a nation. Canadian Stage would like to acknowledge and thank the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of this territory: the Anishinaabe Nations (including the Mississaugas of the Credit), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat and Métis Nations. We give thanks to the Nations recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged, who also share the responsibility for this territory. We honour the Dish With One Spoon Treaty and our responsibility to peaceably share and care for the resources that surround us. We are honoured to be in this meeting place called Tkaronto that many First Nations, Inuit and Métis people from across Turtle Island call home.

Welcome!
Welcome to Canadian Stage’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. We are thrilled to have you here, at the start of a new year, as we continue this season of bold, dynamic theatre that challenges, entertains, and connects us all.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? shattered conventions when it premiered in 1962. Its raw portrayal of love, illusion, and human vulnerability was so provocative that the Pulitzer Prize for Drama was withheld rather than awarding it to Edward Albee. Today, it remains a masterwork of searing honesty and complex relationships—a testament to its enduring relevance and power.
This production demands extraordinary skill from its cast, and we are fortunate to have an ensemble that meets the challenge with unflinching talent and authenticity. Their work invites us to grapple with the rawness and beauty of Albee’s world, making this an unforgettable theatrical experience.
Whether you’re a longtime supporter or new to Canadian Stage, we hope tonight deepens your love of live performance. And we invite you to return soon:
• Up next is Fat Ham, a fresh, unexpected take on Hamlet that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2022. Directed by Philip Akin, whose The Lehman Trilogy captivated audiences last season, this sharp, funny, and moving play is not to be missed.
• Then, the dazzling The Mahabharata, a breathtaking retelling of the Sanskrit epic brought to life by Toronto’s Why Not Theatre. This internationally celebrated production fuses stunning visuals, music and storytelling to immerse you in an unforgettable world of gods, warriors, and the eternal battle between duty and desire.
At Canadian Stage, we aim to connect artists and audiences through stories that reflect the richness of our city and beyond. Thank you for joining us today—let this be the start of many shared evenings of powerful theatre.
Enjoy the performance!
