This season, Canadian Stage is 30 years old. We are graduating from our turbulent twenties, ever youthful, ever determined and inspired as we enter our adult years. As with any living entity, our thirty-year history has been marked by numerous iterations, delectable successes, the occasional resounding failure - a history that has given body and soul to an artistic enterprise unparalleled in this country in its willingness for re-invention and uncharted adventure. In this spirit, I would like to pay homage to the visionary leaders who, in the fall of 1987, brought together the forces of the Centre Stage Company and the Toronto Free Theatre in order to create Canadian Stage: Bill Glassco and Guy Sprung, followed in later years by Artistic Director Bob Baker and Artistic Producer Marty Bragg, each of whom gave heart and spirit to this company during their respective tenures and its respective incarnations. It was an unorthodox, and even querulous coupling, between the city’s most established theatre company and its most rebellious counterpart. The lovechild Canadian Stage has proudly retained both the scope and the irreverence of its parent companies, ever desirous to be a home to equally unorthodox artistic voices, those that renew the canon, break the codes and have the gumption to re-invent the wheel. This year those voices are those of composer-lyricist Britta Johnson, playwright Jordan Tannahill, Inuit throat-singer Tanya Tagaq and her collaborator, Greenlandic mask dancer Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory, each crafting a new and unexpected work to deepen our understanding of the world we live in and our ever-shifting places within it. Morris Panych and James Rolfe’s new musical adaptation of The Overcoat is the long-awaited, daring revisitation of one of Canadian Stage’s historic successes. Crystal Pite and Jonathon Young’s disturbingly beautiful Betroffenheit returns to us fresh from winning the coveted Olivier Award in London for Best Dance Production of the season, though dance is only half of that story. These are but a few of the myriad offerings we are so very happy to share with you over the coming anniversary season of celebratory theatre, dance, music, circus and visual arts; a season of ever bolder partnerships, exogamous marriages and exuberant couplings, giving birth to art that will keep you up at night in the best possible way! We’ll be there with you. So very looking forward,
Matthew Jocelyn Artistic & General Director

#CS30 | DID YOU KNOW? 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Morris Panych and Wendy Gorling’s stage phenomenon The Overcoat. Conceived as a wordless physical theatre experiment, it went on to become one of Canadian Stage’s most successful productions of all time - and one of the biggest Canadian shows in history to go on tour. For Canadian Stage’s 30th season, renowned playwright/ director Panych and his original collaborators join forces with award-winning composer James Rolfe to bring a bold musical voice to Gogol’s darkly funny 19th century novella.

PERSPECTIVES Sandra Laronde on her love affair with the land and creating Backbone. “I am very excited to unearth the new terrain of contemporary dance and live music that immerses audiences in the power of nature and all that is sentient.”
Canadian Stage’s 2017-2019 Berkeley Street Theatre Company-in-Residence is Red Sky Performance, one of Canada’s leading companies of contemporary Indigenous performance in dance, theatre and music. Founded in 2000 by accomplished arts and culture leader Sandra Laronde of the TemeAugama-Anishinaabe (People of the Deep Water), Red Sky has garnered 5 Dora Mavor Moore Awards and two Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and nominations, amongst other recognitions, for its significant influence on the artistic evolution of Indigenous performance around the world.
What are the origins of Red Sky Performance? The name itself “Red Sky” has deep personal meaning for me because they are the first two words of my Anishinaabe (Ojibway) spirit name. I wanted to create a company that reveals the
power, beauty and resiliency of Indigenous peoples by illuminating themes, aesthetics and values of importance to us. I am especially keen to show the world through an Indigenous lens.
How did Backbone come into being? I am intrigued by the different ways of seeing land: how people often see nature as a “vista” or a “postcard”- as somehow lifeless and for sole consumption of the human eye. Backbone is inspired by the mountainous backbone of the Americas, which spans North, Central and South America, to Antarctica ranges. Looking at a map of the Americas from a Western lens, we would see a series of mountain ranges — the Canadian and the American Rockies, the Andes — each separated by the 8
borders of countries. Unlike Western cartography, Indigenous mapping would see the spine of this continent with no borders or boundaries as such - a spine that is very alive, intact, sentient. The “spine” of the Americas is our Earth Mother’s spine, and much like in the human body, it has a nervous system, complete with circuitry, electricity and impulses. I want to help others to see/feel/ experience the tremendous power of this rocky mountainous spine and of their own backbone.
Backbone explores our physical relationship with land; how is that depicted through movement? I am interested in exploring how nature and our land can be truly connected and transmitted through the human body. We explore this connection through both dance and live music, whether it is tectonic plates grinding, the seafloor spreading, or the most nuanced sound imaginable in nature. The live music of Backbone really connects the dancers to their own physical
impulses and bodies, so they are much in the moment. At Red Sky, we are known for our athleticism and this is a highly physical, raw and demanding show. The dancers are akin to high-level athletes with incredible stamina. I’m interested in how our contemporary Indigenous dance forms carry culture – it is really about performing the land, and then how it, in turn, performs us.
How would you define your own relationship with land and place, as it shifts with passing time? It’s a love story. The more that I know and experience land and place, the more deeply I fall in love. I am always finding new things, noticing the most exquisite detail of nature and realizing its infinite wisdom and force. Time is different as well. Audiences will experience
different kinds of time at once simultaneously such as big time, deep time, Indigenous time... but also industrial, Western clock time (human time). We often experience multiple time zones in our everyday lives, and we do carry our ancestral time with us wherever we go.
Red Sky has a very busy year ahead. What other projects are you working on? is so much more that we are doing this year, but this paints a quick picture of what is ahead. Whew. Backbone runs Nov 2 - 12 at the Berkeley Street Downstairs Theatre.

It’s a year of world premieres – three in fact! The first is Backbone at Canadian Stage, which we will also tour to Nova Scotia and Alberta, followed by Europe and Asia in 2018. Also premiering this fall is Miigis, which fuses contemporary Indigenous dance with six live musicians and traditional dance to follow the journey of the Anishinaabe from the Atlantic Coast to the Great Lakes. Our third is Adizokan, a genre-defying creation that explores an image-rich potent experience of Indigenous, electroacoustic and orchestral music with dance and video. At Canadian Stage, we are in development on Trace, a sumptuous new dance and live music production that explores Indigenous connections to ancestral origins and all things traceable. There
