WELCOME TO LIFE AFTER Over our company’s 14 year history, I have often been asked why we have dedicated ourselves exclusively to musical theatre. The simple answer is that time and again, stories told through song have been responsible for my most emotionally-resonant artistic experiences. A remarkable musical theatre writer can translate the inner world of a character into musical notes and perfect rhymes that viscerally pierce the audience. And Britta Johnson is — most certainly — one of those remarkable writers who can do just that. Earlier this year we announced Britta as our inaugural Crescendo Series artist. This opportunity comes with a commitment from us to develop and produce one new musical written or co-written by Britta each season for three years. We are very proud to coproduce Life After with Canadian Stage and Yonge Street Theatricals as the first work in this series. We hope that you will join The Musical Stage Company on this three year journey as we showcase Britta’s work, celebrate extraordinary homegrown talent and collectively experience the power of great musical storytelling.

Salutes our Life After Producing Patrons,
The Don & Shirley Green Family Foundation
In the early fall of 2009, two months after arriving in Toronto to take on the direction of Canadian Stage, my sister Marthe enjoined me to go up to Stratford to attend a onenight performance of Britta Johnson’s Big Box Story, a musical created by Britta for her graduating high-school class, about a small town’s heroic resistance to the onslaught of an invasive mega-store franchise. I was literally gob-smacked by the writing of this piece, the acid-sharp wit, political and human acumen, daring rhythmic shifts, and equally nimble compositional style, already heralding a major and very singular talent. Britta was then 18! It has taken eight years for Britta to come to Canadian Stage, but those eight years have allowed her to develop her unique style and language, and to put them to the service of a deeply moving, deeply personal story of loss and reconciliation, told, sung and performed in a manner that will enchant. I chuckle in anticipation as I write these words… This has also been the opportunity to partner with two wonderfully thoughtful and artistically driven partners, The Musical Stage Company and Yonge Street Theatricals — a true collaboration to bring this full production of Life After to the stage and to our audiences for the very first time. Enjoy.

LIFE AFTER
The experience of loss is hard to explain. I feel like I don’t know enough words to describe it and I think that means it’s a good thing to sing about. When we grieve, we exist all at once in the past, in the present, in the speculated future, in nightmare, in fantasy, suspended out of time. This is the experience I have tried to create for Alice in Life After. It is about losing and growing up and the many ways that people cope with change (from fridge magnets to self-help books to the furious attempt to find logic where there is none. Everyone has their own style, I guess). I wrote the first songs for this show when I was 18 years old participating in the Paprika Festival for young writers here in Toronto (a wonderful organization that I think you should consider supporting, by the way) and I am so deeply grateful to everyone who has been involved in its slightly uneven journey since then: To Reza Jacobs and Rob Kempson who were so encouraging when it was a seed of an idea, to Robert McQueen for saying yes to the project when it was hardly a first draft, to everyone at the Toronto Fringe Festival, to Mitchell Marcus, Matthew Jocelyn, Linda Barnett and Natalie Bartello and everyone at The Musical Stage Company, Canadian Stage and Yonge Street Theatricals for the scope of your vision, to Lynne Shankel for lending your profound gifts to this piece and to my amazing collaborator, sister and friend Anika Johnson who has helped me to grow this world from the very, very beginning. Finally to my mom, Holly, for everything, and to my father, Jerry, who I dedicate this piece to from the bottom of my heart. And to all of you. I am so grateful that you are here. I hardly have the words. Maybe I should write a song about it. Sometimes, words aren’t enough.

“ONE OF THE MOST POTENT MUSICAL THEATRE FORCES IN OUR COUNTRY!”
— Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star
Established in 2004 as Acting Up Stage Company, we unveiled our new name in 2017 alongside the ambitious goals of making Canada a leader in musical theatre, reaching every Torontonian through diverse musical stories, and creating a national and international presence. Our productions — including award-winning contemporary musicals, world premieres and concerts — are seen live by 30,000 people over the 80+ nights that we are onstage annually in venues both traditional and surprising. We incubate new Canadian musicals from development to production, investing in Canadian musical theatre writers and building national and international partnerships. To date, our work has been recognized with 61 Dora Award nominations, 11 Dora Awards and 12 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards. Beyond the stage, we build and enrich communities through musical storytelling. Our robust education programs develop the artists and audiences of tomorrow, offering musical theatre training that boosts self-confidence and self-expression for over 100 young people each year without cost to the participants. We also curate innovative musical programs in partnership with diverse organizations, maximizing the resonance of our work across disciplines and communities.
