The town of Lakeshore’s wastewater treatment plant is located in Woodslee Memorial Park. The low profile building is nestled in the corner on the banks of the Belle River. The 50,000 gpd (190 m3/d) system is comprised of: a primary clarifier, four stage RBC, final clarification, sand filtration and ultraviolet disinfection. Discharge from the works is directly into the Belle River. No bypass facilities have been included in the design. During periods of over design flows caused by severe rains, the plant was able to process the peak flows. The stability of the attached growth process does not allow wash-out of beneficial micro-organisms that perform the purification process. The biomass is attached to the media and cannot be washed off by hydraulic surges. The project installation was managed by the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) and engineered by Totten Sims Hubicki Associates. The treatment plant is completely housed, noise and odour free. The RBC is powered by a five horsepower electric motor. It typically has low power consumption thereby reducing operating costs considerably. The filters are pump fed by small submersible pumps located in the final clarifier.
