1. Canoe Sprint
Primary location: North course
Also known as canoe sprint, flatwater canoe racing is an extremely specialized sport. Paddlers kneel on one knee and only paddle on one side to maintain a straight course. A one-person racing canoe measures 5.2 m (17 ft) and is designed for speed on a calm surface. Flatwater canoeing has been an Olympic sport since 1936 with annual World Championships. As with kayak, racing takes place in three boats, i.e., C-1, C-2, and C-4 and must meet international standards. Unique only to Canada is the C-15, also known as the war canoe, with 14 paddlers and a coxswain.
4. Canoe Polo
Primary location: North course Canoe Polo is a spectacular team game, which combines elements of water polo, basketball and canoeing! The game is played by two teams of five players, each trying to score goals with a water polo ball in a net suspended above the water at each end of a “playing pitch”.
7. water polo Traditionally, water polo is played in all deep water, however, the sport can be played in any type of pool or open water. A game consists of 4 quarters with two teams attempting to throw the ball into their opponent’s goal line between the posts and crossbar. Each team consists of 6 field players and one goalkeeper and is a contact sport. Field players can only use one hand, while the goaltender can use both. The objective of the game is to score more goals than your opponent.
9. triathlon Primary location: waterway A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event that combines successive swimming, cycling, and running races. Athletes must train and be in top condition to endure the grueling challenge of races such as Ironman Triathlon. The sport made its début at the Olympics in 2000 and comprised of a 1500 m swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run. Today, thousands of events are held worldwide each year and annually, at least one triathalon is held in Welland.
2. Dragon Boat
Primary location: North course
FEATURED
Though dragon boat racing is over 2,000 years old, it is the world’s fastest growing team water sport. Since the formation of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) in 1990, the sport has evolved into a festival, making it a popular method for local charities to raise funds and support. Traditionally, a crew of 22, including a drummer and a steersperson, is required to race these massive 40 ft boats adorned with a dragon head and tail during race festivals.
5. Kayak
Primary location: North & south course Flatwater kayak racing is an extremely fast sport requiring paddlers to have a good level of expertise. Racing kayaks (also known as sprint boats) are lightweight and can be up to 6.2 m (20 ft) in length – with narrow beams built for speed. Flatwater kayak racing hosted at WIFC can include K1, K2 and K4 races. Courses for men and women cover 200 m, 500m, and 1000m.
8. open water swim
Primary location: North course/ penfinancial credit union flatwater community centre Open water swimming is the latest Olympic sport. Most swims are between 1 km and 3 km. In a standard triathlon, the swim leg in 3.8 km (2.4 miles). Marathon swimming is 10 km or more. The pace of these races is very fast right from the start. Swimmers jostle for position then head for the buoys. Many open water swimmers train for triathlons and Ironman competitions.
10. stand up paddleboards (sup)
3. Rowing
Primary location: North & south course Rowing is a demanding endurance sport requiring focus and discipline. It has been an Olympic sport since 1900. FISA has held annual World Rowing Championships since 1962. Flatwater racing boats (sculls) are unique in their design with sliding seats and attached oars. Their long and narrow shells are designed for speeds of up to 10 meters per second. Boats have 1, 2, 4, or 8 rowers. Men and women can compete in single, double and quadruple sculls. Regattas held at the WIFC can vary from 500m to 2000m and accommodate up to 6 designated lanes. They can include all weight, age and skill divisions including Adaptive Rowing.
6. recreational There are various ways to enjoy the waterway for only a day! Fishing platforms can be found in numerous locations along the waterway and offer very robust and varied population of fish popular to anglers from all over, including Perch, Pan Fish as well as Bass. The recreational waterway offers a chance to take advantage of gorgeous weather in single kayaks, tandem kayaks, pedal boats, recreational canoes, and stand up paddleboards. Scuba diving at the Lincoln Street Docks is a great way to enjoy the waterway from don under day or night. The park features a submerged boat, a sunken car, as well as an underwater training area for adventure enthusiasts.

Row to Podium is Canada’s official talent identification and development program for rowing. Our goal is to mold new athletes into future Olympic and Paralympic Champions. Row to Podium was designed specifically to find tall, young and fit athletes with no experience in rowing. As part of this program, the WIFC has been selected to host our monthly training camps where targeted athletes are gathered from across Ontario, as well as athletes from Manitoba, Quebec and the Maritimes to be assessed and monitored as they continue along the High Performance pathway, with the goal of representing Canada on the international stage. The WIFC provides the ideal training venue for our camps with its flat, long-distance waterway and brand new training venue, including the rowing tank, on the North Course. ROWONTARIO and Rowing Canada Aviron are very happy with our continuing partnership with the WIFC enabling us to provide a top quality venue to train and assess our future Olympians.

The ROWONTARIO Masters Championship debuted in 2002 when the size of the ROWONTARIO Championships outgrew its 2 –day capacity. In order to increase the quality of racing opportunities offered to Masters rower, the new annual regatta was specifically dedicated to Masters rowers from across Ontario and the US. The ROWONTARIO Masters Championships has doubled in size over the last 4 years, and in 2014, the regatta attracted approximately 350 entries from 37 clubs across Ontario and the United States. ROWONTARIO and the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation continue to work as partners to improve and grow this event that is now an annual “must” for Masters rowers.
The first ROWONTARIO Championships Regatta was developed through the efforts of ROWONTARIO’s original 12 member clubs working together to create a Provincial Championships regatta. The ROWONTARIO Championships is now considered by many to be the final “warm-up” for crews competing at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta that occurs the first week of August in St. Catharines. The 2015 ROWONTARIO Championships Regatta will be the 47th annual event and expected to attract approximately 1000 athletes from 35 clubs across Ontario and the United States.

Western Ontario Division Trials & Championships JULY 25 - 26
CanoeKayak Canada, formerly Canadian Canoe Association, was founded in 1900. There are 6 divisions across Canada, one of which is Western Ontario Division with 15 Clubs. The athletes compete for their Club and points accumulated are towards a burgee awarded to the club with the most points. The athletes compete for place standings and are often awarded with medals. Western Ontario Division annually holds its divisional championships and which is also a qualifier for the CanoeKayak Canada National Championships and Ontario CanoeKayak Championships. Since 1979, the Trials/ Championships have been held on the Old Welland Canal and now at the WIFC. Approximately 500 athletes from participating clubs compete to be a divisional champion as well as qualify for the provincial and national championships. DID YOU KNOW? The canoe and kayak occupy an important place in Canadian history. An essential feature in the lives of Canada’s aboriginal people, they were adopted by European immigrants to carry goods and people through the wilderness. When their importance as a means of transportation decreased with the coming of the railway, canoes and kayaks became popular recreational vehicles, ideal for the quiet exploration of Canada’s lakes and streams. At the same time, increasing numbers discovered the pleasures of canoe and kayak racing and when the 1936 Olympic Games were staged in Berlin, both the canoe and kayak were on the program for men. Women made their Olympic debut in 1948 at London. For more information, visit: westernontariodivision.com and on Facebook at CanoeKayak Canada Western Ontario Division.

At our 2014 championship regatta held in Welland there were close to one hundred races for U17, U19, U23 & Senior man and woman crews. This is a far cry from the sixteen to twenty races back in 1953. This year with the PanAm Canoeing/Kayak events being held in Welland and the Rowing events being held in St.Catharines, CORA will only be hosting two regattas this year, July 4th in Welland and July 11th in London. The first CORA regatta, Saturday July 4th will be held at the Welland International Flatwater Centre South Course with events for U17, U19, U23, Senior men and women crews along with women and men master’s races. Our Championship regatta will be hosted by the London Rowing Club on the London Training Centre Course on Lake Fanshawe in London Ontario on Saturday July 11th.
CENTRAL ONTARIO ROWING ASSOCIATION (CORA)
July 4, 2015
We expect 20+ rowing clubs competing in ninety to one hundred races at each of these two regattas. For more information, visit: rowingcanada.org

EVENTS
Starting in 1993 and running under the auspices of the Welland YMCA, the first venture featured a 5 km and a 3 km race with 48 participants. Three years later, a 10 km race was added and for 6 years, these three races were run annually. Although there were about 100 swimmers each year by that time, the race was forced to fold due to a lack of volunteers. In 2006, the races started again with a renewed volunteer base and operating under the auspices of the WRCC. The 3 km, 5 km, and 10 km races are now called The Elma Kelly Couture Open Water Swims, while the 1km race is the Bridie McCann Memorial Race, named for a late member of the committee and a well-respected swimming coach at Brock University.
WELLAND OPEN WATER SWIM AUGUST 9
The Open Water Swim is considered to be one of the best in the area because of the water quality and temperature, as well as the world class facilities of the WIFC. For more information, contact Elma Couture at emcouture3@live.com
Attracting approximately 700 athletes, this event will take place in both Welland and Niagara Falls. Welland will host the swim as well as the start of the bike segment of the event. The Niagara Falls Barrelman is an epic new & beautiful course starting with a calm sheltered swim in the Welland Canal, a fast and flat winding bike course through the Niagara Peninsula, and finishing up with a spectacular run that takes participants past the Niagara Falls twice.
Niagara Falls Barrelman Multi-Sport Canada September 20
The swim portion of the event takes place on the clear waters of Welland’s Waterway at 9 am; a 2k single loop swim that passes under two bridges with great viewing for spectators. The second stage offers a flat and fast 90 kilometre bike course, which will take athletes on quiet roads out of Welland and into Niagara Falls. The bike course travels south-west from Welland, completes a small loop and returns north-east until just south of Welland. At this point, the bike travels from Welland to Niagara Falls along the scenic Parkway. For more information, visit: niagarafallstriathlon.com
Taking place for 11 years, South Niagara Rowing Club hosts this must attend event. Boats begin with a rolling start at intervals of 10 – 20 seconds and are timed over a set distance. The oldest, and arguably most famous, head race is the Head of the River Race, founded by Steve Fairbairn in 1926, annually taking place in March on the River Thames in London, UK. The fastest crew is awarded the title Head of the River (as in “head of the class”, or in Welland’s case “Head of the Waterway”).
Head of the Welland Five Bridges Fall Classic 22
WIFC | 2015 Programme
September 26th
The 5.2 km race travels through the heart of Welland and under five different bridges that span its banks. Annually it attracts 1,000 athletes and an additional 400 spectators/parents/coaches from Ontario, New York State, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The subtle twists and turns of the waterway, punctuated with its multiple and sizable bridge abutments makes for exciting racing and risk reward areas for passing slower crews. THE WELLAND INDOOR PADDLE TANK
FEATURED
What do canoe, kayak, dragon boat, and rowing have in common with the Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC), apart from hosting races and practices from springtill fall? The WIFC features an Indoor Paddle Tank that allows you to participate in these flatwater sports throughout the winter months! The Welland Indoor Paddle Tank delivers community sport & recreation programming in a multi-sport, moving water, variable speed training tank located at the Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC), a legacy venue of Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Parapan American Games. Tank season begins in October and runs until March/April. It is the equivalent of a treadmill but with water as the ‘training surface’ instead of rubber.
The program will provide a unique opportunity to the local community to experience various flatwater sports. Schools, community groups, and sporting teams/clubs are encouraged to grab a paddle or an oar and give flatwater sports a try! Whether you have stood on the podium at worlds, or have never been out on the water, this opportunity allows for individuals of all experience levels and all ages to participate no matter the season.
The Welland Indoor Paddle Tank is one-of-a-kind in North America, accommodating each of the four flatwater sports: canoe, kayak, rowing (both sweep and sculling disciplines) and dragon boat. The tank has many features, including adjustable water speed, which allows use by first time community members and national champions alike as the moving water can be set at different speeds based on training.
The facility promotes the principles of physical literacy as outlined in the Canadian Sport for Life Model. These principles are fostered through programming opportunities both in the tank and in the 2,000 square foot fitness space, outfitted with free weights, weight equipment, cardio accessories, exercise machines, and ergs. The facility also features open space, ideal for housing yoga, zumba, or any other instructor led fitness group.
PADDLE TANK FACTS • With over 1,000 people participating in activities at the Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC) tank this winter, the multiple programs and offerings had much success with its inaugural season! • The paddle tank facility offers 2,000 sq. ft. of gym space outfitted with training equipment and ergometres, providing space and capacity for physical literacy and fitness programs for local clubs and community programming For more information, visit: wifc.ca/site/paddletank WIFC | 2015 Programme

CLUBS
SOUTH NIAGARA CANOE CLUB
As the memory of winter fades away and spring enters full bloom, the quietude of the frozen Welland Recreational Waterway has given way to the splash and whoosh of paddling at Canada`s premier paddling destination. Starting the beginning of May on most evenings you`ll find a growing, dedicated and passionate group of paddlers taking to the water, stroking their way toward fitness, health, excellence and most of all fun! A new season of paddling is underway at South Niagara Canoe Club (SNCC) which has become beehive of activity for a very diverse membership; SNCC coaches are proud to be working with athletes from age 5 to 80+, and skill levels from complete beginners to World Champions. This summer SNCC is again offering a full schedule of introductory level programming for children and youth, ages five to eighteen, through our Canoe Kids, Elementary and Developmental programs in canoe and kayak. The club is also proud to continue its strong tradition in dragon boat through the offering of four different dragon boat programs: • Canal Dragons - mixed recreational • Hope Floats - women’s cancer survivor and supporter crew • Warlocks - mixed competitive • PaddleAll - for individuals with a developmental challenge For anyone interested in trying our programming, we offer a 3-for-free policy; your first 3 sessions are free of charge, so come down, jump in a boat and give it a shot! WIFC | 2015 Programme
There are some great things in store for SNCC in 2015 which we are excited to share with the community, along with special highlights from the 2014 season: • In June 2015, SNCC is hosting a new event called ‘Battle with a Paddle’ in partnership with the Hope Centre, Welland. This event is comprised of a food drive and dragon boat festival for local and Regional High School students. The food drive will begin May 1st, and will culminate in the staging of the dragon boat festival on June 5th. Their goal is to build Battle with a Paddle into a yearly event. • SNCC currently has an incredible 15 paddlers who are in close contention to represent Canada at this summer`s IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships taking place at the WIFC! • SNCC coach Brian Roy will be competing in the Senior A category (40-49) and SNCC coach Doug Jones will be coaching the Senior C Team Canada (60+) during the IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships • The Hope Floats survivor and supporter crew that trains out of SNCC raced at the 2014 World Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Championships in Sarasota, Florida; Hope Floats also won their division at the St. Catharine’s Dragon Boat Festival • The Warlocks, an SNCC crew coached by Doug Jones, won first place in both the Welland Dragon Boat Festival and the St. Catharine’s Dragon Boat Festival in 2014.
• Lillian Culp and Jillian Albano led the way for SNCC’s canoe kayak team in 2014, both placed in the top 5 in Ontario in Girls U14 K1 2,000m; a total of 7 paddlers from SNCC participated in the Provincial Championships. • Eight paddlers from SNCC raced at the IDBF Club Crew World Championships in Ravenna, Italy, winning several medals with their respective crews in the process. This summer will be a special milestone in the development of SNCC through the opportunity of having both the Toronto2015 Pan American Games canoe sprint competition and the IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships taking place at our home course, right here in Welland. SNCC members will be heavily involved in all aspects of these spectacular competitions through officiating, volunteering, competing, spectating, and cheering. 2015 promises to be an amazing year for club learning, recruitment, and development with the host of activities that will be happening on the Waterway through the summer months. Attracting young athletes from Southern Ontario and Ottawa, those in attendance will receive training on and off the water from CanoeKayak Canada National Team Athletes.
