master’s thesis design and performance evaluation of an adaptive skin

Adaptive building skins that can act and adjust in respect to changing environmental factors offer a high potential of providing high quality interiors by manipulating exterior factors and decreasing energy consumption. Aim of this study is to explore energy efficiency potential of adaptive building skins designed as a second skin for existing high rise office buildings designed with fully glazed facades in Istanbul. Annual heating and cooling energy performance of four adaptive skin concepts with different movement types are investigated for a base office unit with typical office features by EnergyPlus linked to Grasshopper and Rhinoceros via Honeybee. Motion trigger of each concept is defined by three control strategies to observe the effect of different triger parameters on energy performance. Best performing adaptive skin concept is designed in detail in terms of movement pattern, geometry and dimensions to suit exemplary office building. Results show that studied adaptive skin concepts cause a decrease in total annual heating and cooling energy demands between 21.20% and 61.87%.

The new warehouse building for the clothing store chain LC Waikiki is built on a 20.700 m² land in Istanbul, Esenyurt. The building has a total construction area of 58.300 m², including the ground floor and three basement floors. The building is located in a sloped land. There are three entrances in different levels through a total of 16 truck doors and 12 hydraulic ramp doors together with an office entrance and an employee entrance. Since it is a logistics center, a total of 397 parking spaces are planned by giving importance to the entrance and circulation of vehicles. In addition to storage and shippping areas, there are offices located in the mezzanine floor on the northeast side of the building. On the southwest side, spaces are designed to meet the needs of employees such as changing rooms, cafeteria, and dining hall.

APARTMENTS in GAYRETTEPE

conceptual design drawings for local municipality approval

Two apartment blocks in the neighbour plot areas designed with similar approach to create a harmony. There is a common vehicle and pedestrian entrance between the two apartments meeting in a common garden. One of the blocks contains 18 flats with 10 residential storey and 2 storey of parking. The other block has 16 flats with 9 residential storey and 3 storey of parking. Both blocks have vehicle elevators to reach the parking area below ground floors. Facades of the blocks degined with a modern approach with the use of 3 colours; white, grey and wood.
