With its lockdowns and travel restrictions, 2021 is looking a lot like the “unprecedented” year that was 2020. Fortune favours the brave, as the saying goes, and Australia has indeed been fortunate (perhaps through a mix of good management, good luck, border closures and the ‘tyranny’ of distance) to record fewer pandemic deaths per capita than most. Here in Canberra, mask wearing is no longer mandatory while signing in via the Check In CBR app is. ACT residents can travel to New Zealand and some parts of Australia today but not to others and vice versa, though not always reciprocal. It’s hard to keep up, but essential. So, in the midst of Covid news overload and potential pandemic fatigue, what are you doing to nurture your health and wellbeing? I’ve reinvigorated my yoga and meditation practice, which helps me. Morning walks also lift my mood, as does eating nourishing hot meals. Please take time to care for yourself, your way. Reasons to be grateful this past week include Bangarra Dance Theatre’s powerful Sandsong, a joyous afternoon at Hartley Lifecare’s high tea, spending quality time with friends, woolly socks, and veggie soup. Take care,

news ‘Last straw’: latest lockdowns devastate Canberra tourism sector Border closures to Canberra and lockdowns in NSW and Victoria have had a devastating impact on local tourism-related businesses, including hotels, attractions and tourism operators. As a result, the ACT Government last week announced a series of funding initiatives: support of up to $75,000 will be provided to individual accommodation providers and
$15,000 for small private tourism operators. Small tourism operators and boutique accommodation providers will be contacted to apply for a payment of up to $15,000 to assist with a range of business expenses. Eligibility will require evidence of a 30% loss of revenue in July 2021 compared to April 2021 and of expenses incurred.
Chair of the ACT Small Tour Operators Collective, Marg Wade, believes there may be virtually no tour offerings available in Canberra after the pandemic.
Vehicle registration fee waivers for ACT registered hire cars and charter buses will be extended until 30 March 2022. Chair of the ACT Small Tour Operators Collective and owner of Canberra Secrets personalised tours, Marg Wade, told Canberra Weekly tour operators were grateful for the announcement. The Collective said the extension of the waiver of vehicle registration costs was helpful, but the eligibility criteria for the small tourism operator payment ruled out numerous local businesses. Some small tour operators are microbusinesses not registered for GST and often work out of home offices so cannot keep receipts for rent and rate payments – both eligibility requirements to receive the recovery payment. For those microbusinesses, the Collective said direct cash support would be ideal. Ms Wade said local tourism operators have been “suffering terribly” since the bushfires and hailstorm of summer 2019-20, with
that compounded by the end of JobKeeper in March and subsequent travel restrictions over winter. “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for what the ACT Government has put on the table,” she said, “it’s just been such a harrowing time for tour operators.” According to Ms Wade, this most recent downturn “may very well be the last straw” for many of Canberra’s smaller tourism operators, with some losing up to 100% of their business. “When we get through this and visitors come to Canberra, the tour offerings may be virtually nothing and so visitors will go away with a poor impression of our beautiful city.” The Australian Hotels Association ACT Branch (AHA ACT) welcomed the ACT Government’s financial support for accommodation hotels. AHA ACT general manager Anthony Brierley said the local accommodation sector is losing $1 million a day, with over 7,000 hotel rooms across town sitting empty. Overseas travellers to quarantine at ANU Government officials returning from overseas are in quarantine at a vacant residential accommodation complex at ANU for 14 days from Wednesday 21 July, ACT Health has announced. The travellers will stay in apartments on Liversidge Street, supported by more than 30 ACT Health staff. Robust infection prevention and control measures will be in place at the accommodation facility, an ACT Health spokesperson said. The conditions will be similar to those for hotel quarantine. All passengers will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms on arrival and regularly during the quarantine period. 6
canberraweekly.com.au
ACT Health staff, including social workers and psychologists, will monitor the travellers’ health and wellbeing every day. This is the sixth governmentfacilitated flight ACT Health has managed for returning officials and diplomats. “We continue to work closely with the Commonwealth Government and the ANU to ensure there are strict processes and measures in place to protect the health and safety of passengers, staff and the wider Canberra community,” a spokesperson said. The University could not provide an exact number of travellers. “It is fair to say that there will be a handful of travellers quarantining
at a time and there could be up to a dozen in any given cohort.” Domestic students from interstate hotspots will be in quarantine at Davey Lodge, ANU has confirmed. Around 600 students from NSW are waiting to safely return to campus for Semester 2, once ACT Health permits them to enter Canberra, an ANU spokesperson said. Returning domestic students were quarantined on campus during 2020 and 2021, following protocols developed with ACT Health. Since late June, more than 200 students have completed safe quarantine or stay at home orders on the ANU campus in preparation for Semester 2.
The ANU urged students in lockdown areas to stay tuned and not attempt to cross borders until given a clear direction to do so. They should also follow the directions of ACT Health and health authorities in relevant jurisdictions. The ANU has implemented academic and financial support for students who cannot return to ANU in time for the start of Semester 2. “We know it is disappointing for many of our students who can’t return to campus at this point in time,” a spokesperson said. “That’s why we are working closely with ACT Health to help them get back as soon as is safely possible.” - Nick Fuller

Corona fatigue: the next enemy A friend told me this week that he has now developed the habit of turning on the TV news each night about 10 minutes after it starts. That way, he said, he skips all the dreary statistics on the latest Covid outbreaks. I can’t say I blame him. The bombs that fell on London during the Blitz sustained the population’s steely resolve to battle on, but modern Australians don’t seem quite so well equipped to cope with the invisible bombardment of the coronavirus. The fact that so few of us in this country have been infected – we know the virus by reputation, but rarely by direct encounter – does tax the willingness to keep up the precautions urged on us daily. Which is why the latest outbreaks in Sydney and Melbourne
are proving so hard to contain. The lockdown measures in Sydney are the strictest seen in that state this year, but community transmission continues unabated. Part of this must be that people are simply sick of wearing the straitjackets that the measures entail. Some are calculating that they can break the rules and still have a reasonably good chance they won’t pass on the virus and they won’t be caught. Britain is taking an entirely different approach. As of this week, it is stripping away most Covid restrictions and leaving individuals to make their own decisions on how to protect themselves. Opinion polling by the Australia Institute this week suggests that state and territory leaders are achieving high approval ratings for their handling of the coronavirus,
while Scott Morrison’s is slumping because of the slow rollout of the vaccines. Two observations can be made about this. The first is that the Australian Institute is a left-wing think tank which has never been known to publish research helpful to the likes of a Liberal government. No doubt, if the same polling had been conducted six months ago, an entirely different picture would have resulted – which is probably why the Institute didn’t poll at that time. The second is that, on any objective test, high public confidence in the handling of the virus by state governments is unwarranted. Overall, they have made a fist of the entire exercise. From the Ruby Princess fiasco in Sydney to the hotel quarantine outbreak in Melbourne and
WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR
the bizarre family lockouts in Brisbane, state premiers have acted inconsistently and capriciously. They have largely relied on the advice of their chief health officers, but have often forgotten that such advice is only part of the decisionmaking matrix. Taking the British path of opening up would be a substantial risk in Australia right now. But Boris Johnson has signalled that the time may be coming when we need to treat the virus not as an enemy to be defeated at whatever cost, but as a fact of modern life, to be accommodated and managed much like other contagious illnesses. The troops are weary. A truce may be our only choice.

Save Braddon Centrelink The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly demonstrated the significant role that governments have to play in supporting our community. Exacerbating uncertainty is the last thing we need from government during these challenging times. With images of long lines outside the Centrelink office on Lonsdale Street when Covid-19 first hit still fresh in our minds, I recently discovered via a Facebook ad for the office space that the Morrison Government is considering closing the office. It is deeply concerning that the Government could close this vital face-to-face government service for Canberrans during a pandemic, when large numbers of people need to access Centrelink services. They have been closing Centrelink offices around the country and Braddon looks like it’s next. The Government Services Minister, Senator Linda Reynolds, has confirmed that the lease will end and has not provided any confirmation of an alternative site for central Canberra. Instead, the Minister heralded online and phone services as the rationale for the government potentially closing the only in-person Centrelink office in the Canberra
electorate. What the Minister does not seem to understand is that not every issue can be resolved online – there are many reasons that people are required by Centrelink to attend the shopfront. In other words, the Government is removing the human from the Human Services they are obligated to deliver for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. The Morrison Government’s Robo Debt scandal is a reminder of the disastrous consequences when human oversight is removed from the delivery of government services such as Centrelink. It fits with this Government’s general contempt for anyone receiving social security and the system itself. According to Department of Social Services figures, in March 2021, over 42,000 people in the Canberra electorate relied on a Centrelink benefit, pension, allowance or concession card for support. This represents over 42, 000 people with varying and complex support needs in Canberra who should have access to face-to-face Centrelink services. Since launching my petition to save the Braddon Centrelink office a fortnight ago, 800 Canberrans
WITH ALICIA PAYNE MP MEMBER FOR CANBERRA
have signed and I have been inundated with responses on what the closure will mean for the pensioners, carers, students, and job seekers who rely on the shopfront service. Overwhelmingly, Canberrans are concerned that if the shopfront is closed, the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our community will be marginalised further. Canberrans with complex needs who don’t have phone or internet access, people with disabilities, the elderly, and those escaping domestic violence require access to face-to-face, human-driven services. A government that is motivated to serve and protect the community would not even question the need for this service. The Morrison Government must be upfront with the Canberra community and guarantee that a Centrelink office will remain in central Canberra far into the future. Our community doesn’t deserve further uncertainty on top of the challenges of the pandemic. To add your voice and save Braddon Centrelink, please visit aliciapayne.com.au/savebraddoncentrelink/

Thousands sign Gallagher’s Gungahlin Pool repairs delayed petition against Seselja Long-awaited repairs to the Gungahlin Leisure Centre swimming pool will not be finished this year. The 50-metre pool was ready for tiling, Sport and Recreation Minister, Yvette Berry, announced on Friday 16 July. But the contracted tilers were in Sydney, and could not leave due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. “Unfortunately, this means the pool will not be ready by the end of the year as originally anticipated,” Ms Berry said. “Tiling cannot begin until travel restrictions lift, or unless the tilers are granted an exemption to travel to the ACT.” The pool has been closed since March 2020, at first due to lockdown. Last year, tiles fell off the pool – angering locals, who wondered why a $28 million pool only seven years old should fall apart already. This March, the ACT Government
12
canberraweekly.com.au
contracted the Kynetic group to manage the pool repairs. (No tenders were received from local Canberra tilers.) The situation in Sydney was too uncertain to update the timeline yet, but a spokesperson said the government would inform the public when they could. Ms Berry was apologetic about the “incredibly frustrating” delay. Locals were disappointed, reported Gungahlin Community Council president Peter Elford. Many residents wished the government had identified a contractor in the ACT; then, travel restrictions would not have delayed the repairs. But Mr Elford was also resigned. “We live in very difficult times. COVID has impacted a lot of normal business processes.”
More than 2,000 people have signed Labor Senator Katy Gallagher’s petition accusing Liberal Senator Zed Seselja of undemocratically blocking a bill to let Territories make their own laws – including legislating on euthanasia. Northern Territory Liberal Senator Dr Sam McMahon has left the ACT out of her private member’s bill to restore Territory rights, Gallagher stated. “I did originally try to include the ACT in it, but in my conversations with Senator Zed Seselja he wasn’t keen to do that,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted McMahon. “If Zed’s not interested and not going to support it, I don’t think it would be worth doing. I’d be better off just doing it for the NT.” All local ACT politicians want to annul the Euthanasia Law Act 1997 (the ‘Andrews Bill’), which prevents both Territories and Norfolk Island from passing laws permitting euthanasia. “Canberrans should have the same democratic rights as our neighbours just over the border in Queanbeyan,” Gallagher said. “The fact that Zed is ‘not keen’ to see this happen really goes to show who he’s in politics for: himself.” Seselja hit back: “Senator Gallagher is playing politics with an issue of life and death where there are differing views within the community. “She is lying when she claims that I have stood in the way of any Senator putting forward a bill which includes the ACT. I have simply been consistent in the position I have taken to every election I have contested. “If Senator Gallagher is as committed to legalising euthanasia as she claims, there is nothing preventing her from
introducing a bill to the Senate, as all senators are entitled to do.” The Liberal has been an outspoken opponent of euthanasia for years, arguing that assisted dying was an “ethical threshold” that should not be crossed. “Make no mistake, this is not about Territory rights, this is about human rights,” he wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald in 2018. He is concerned that vulnerable people would be pressured into suicide (as they have in the USA); and that children with incurable diseases, alcoholics and drug addicts, people with dementia, the mentally ill and the disabled could all be killed with the approval of the State (as they have in some European countries). He worries that governments might find it easier and cheaper to euthanise people considered a burden on society than to properly fund palliative care, which would offer a dignified death. Seselja’s opposition to euthanasia has angered the progressive left. On Gallagher’s Facebook page, several posters complained of Seselja’s Christian beliefs, and alleged he did not represent his constituents’ interests. “He thinks his own conservative personal views are more important than the democratic rights of Canberrans,” Gallagher said. “I’m not surprised that there are a lot of Canberrans who want to send Zed a clear message.” Seselja maintains the Senate and Parliament have already rejected making euthanasia a matter for a conscience vote. However, he might be willing to discuss or consider giving the ACT broader Territory rights if euthanasia were part of a package of legislation, and not the principal issue. - Nick Fuller

Helping ACT feeds Canberra’s vulnerable Local charity Helping ACT believes that nobody should sleep hungry in Canberra – and refugee and asylum seekers will sleep a little better this week. To celebrate the Islamic holy day of Eid alAdha (Tuesday 20 July), Helping ACT volunteers packed 40 food hampers on Saturday, which they distributed to families on Sunday. Mohammed Ali, a retired biochemist and former Multicultural Volunteer of the Year, founded Helping ACT three years ago to provide food security to the vulnerable: refugees and asylum seekers, homeless people, international students, and anyone else in need. Celebrated on the last day of the Hajj pilgrimage, Eid al-Adha – the
Festival of Sacrifice, the second holiest day in Islam – reminds Muslims to care for those in need. Traditionally, Muslims distribute lamb to the poor and needy, as Helping ACT will do. But Mr Ali – a twinkling, genial man – needs no reminder to care for those in need, whatever the season. Although retired, he tirelessly spends four out of five days working with Helping ACT, in partnership with other agencies – stocking food pantries, organising meals for homeless people and school children, helping refugees and asylum seekers find housing, or bringing food and groceries to families. “There is a great sense of satisfaction [in helping people],” Mr
Ali said. “If you can simply change one life, you’ve done a lot.” When he moved to Australia from Pakistan, Mr Ali had not expected to see homelessness and poverty, people sleeping rough and struggling families, in Australia’s most affluent city. “These people need food – it’s a basic human right,” he said. “I thought that we have to help.” The plight of refugees and asylum seekers was another driver for setting up Helping ACT. Although Australia was a haven, many faced problems in settlement. “Those people who come here have heavy baggage on their
minds,” Mr Ali said. “They have left their country, they have left all their roots there, and the uncertainties of the future are killing them.” Canberrans are extremely generous, he said. “We were completely empty-handed when we started Helping ACT, but never ever has come any day when we have felt: ‘OK, we want to do this; where will the money come from?’” If you want to donate to Helping ACT or know any family who needs help, call Mohammed Ali on 0404 947 260, email mohammedali506@hotmail.com or visit www.helpingact.org - Nick Fuller
to the editor Do not raise age of criminal consent I disagree with my old Assembly colleague Gary Humphries (CW 15 July 2021, p12) that the age of criminal consent should be raised from 10 to 14. There are several reasons for this: Currently, a court has to be satisfied that a young person aged 10 to 13 actually knows what they’ve done is wrong before they can be prosecuted. Because they are young, police will only charge 10 to 13-year-olds for the more serious offences and/or when public safety demands it. As a former defence lawyer in the ACT and NSW and an ACT prosecutor, I have found it rare for 10 and 11-year-olds to appear before the courts, but I certainly prosecuted quite a number of 12 and 13-year-olds for serious crimes; they knew right from wrong as did those I defended. Forget what the UN wants; no other Australian jurisdiction is at this stage going down this path. Let’s concentrate on good rehabilitation and good programs to stop kids from offending in the first place. - Bill Stefaniak, former ACT Attorney-General, Juvenile Justice Minister and Public Prosecutor. Re Gary Humphries’ article ‘Goaling 10-year-olds: a case study in failure’ (CW 15 July 2021, p12), I agree wholeheartedly that the reason most children turn to crime is due to the way they are brought up, be it no guidance, no discipline or they have been abused. I do not, however, agree with the UN benchmark of 14. Children can learn right from wrong at a much earlier age than 14. Given children as young as four are deemed to be capable of deciding to irreversibly change their gender, how can they be deemed to be unable to know right from wrong until they are 14? - V Evans, MacGregor

Savage blow for Raiders It was a bittersweet night for young Canberra fullback Xavier Savage after he sustained a season-ending shoulder injury while starring in the Raiders’ 34-18 victory over the Sharks on the Gold Coast on 17 July. Savage was brilliant for the Raiders, running for 246 metres and scoring his maiden NRL try as Canberra recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since round 2. Jordan Rapana scored the opening try for Canberra and received a high shot as he put the ball down, giving the Raiders an eight-point try. The Sharks responded with the next two tries before a Jarrod Croker penalty goal on halftime levelled the scored at 10-all. Canberra made the perfect start to the second half with Savage bursting through the line to set up Wighton for a try. The Sharks responded quickly
through Ronaldo Mulitalo to take a slender 18-16 lead. With Wighton forced from the field with a rib complaint, Canberra didn’t miss a beat as Sam Williams put Hudson Young through the line to reclaim the lead. A brilliant tackle from Tom Starling forced a Sharks error which Seb Kris pounced on and he gifted Savage his first try. Another mistake from the Sharks late in the game gave Semi Valemei a clear run to the line to seal victory. The Raiders are now ninth on the ladder and are equal on points with the eighth-placed Sharks. Savage hurt his shoulder during the second half but played out the match. He will miss the rest of the season due to an AC joint injury. Canberra take on the Eels tonight, Thursday 22 July 7.50pm.
Franklin lifts Swans in chaotic Sydney Derby Four goals from Lance Franklin helped lift the Swans to a stunning come-from-behind 26-point win over GWS on Sunday 18 July in a fixture where eight players were unavailable due to coronavirus protocols. Sydney trailed by 35 early in the second quarter but came to life, leading into halftime in the derby at Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium. The Giants lost star Toby Greene and Matt de Boer just an hour before the bounce was due after Victoria upgraded their COVID exposure sites, while Sydney lost Callum Mills, Harry Cunningham and Colin O’Riordan. didn’t seem to bother GWS as they came flying out of the blocks, kicking six first-quarter goals to open up a 37-8 lead at the end of the opening term. They stretched the lead to 5016 midway through the second quarter before the Swans kicked three straight to reduce the margin to 56-40 at the main break. Sydney kicked six goals to none in the third quarter to open up a 19-point margin at the final break and were never threatened in the last quarter to run out 15.8 (98) to 11.6 (72) winners. The Giants have now dropped out of the eight to sit in 12th spot on the ladder. They take on the Bombers next round in a crunch match.

Local healthcare spotlight: Two Canberra GPs to help you “love the skin you’re in”
Above: Dr Damian Bezzina Right: Dr Shiromi Liyanage Colleagues Dr Damian Bezzina and Dr Shiromi Liyanage could not have taken more different routes through life to the Ochre Medical Centres in Casey and Bruce, where they focus on skin medicine. Now specialising in cosmetics, skin checks and skin cancer treatments, Dr Bezzina was drawn to skin work while working as a GP in the UK. He undertook further training in skin cancer medicine through the Royal College of Physicians alongside a group of dermatological and plastic surgeons. “In the UK it was all about looking for lumps and bumps - skin cancer checks were not a big thing under the pale British sun!” he says. That all changed when he moved to Canberra in 2019. Since then, his practice has included a lot of dermatology, often seeing patients referred to him with skin problems that can’t be managed by their usual GP. Dr Bezzina tells of a patient with cystic acne scars on his chest and
shoulders that were impacting his self confidence. “He didn’t feel he could take his shirt off at the beach because of his purple scars. He had already had Dermaroller treatment at a beauty clinic which had made very little difference.” Dr Bezzina started the patient on a course of steroid injections and micro needling and says he came back very pleased after just the first session. “Instead of thick lumpy scars, he now had mild, flat scarring which continued to improve over time. He felt much more confident about himself as a result. He is coming back next week for what should be his final treatment.” Dr Bezzina also uses botox in his practice for both therapeutic and cosmetic treatments. He uses it for a whole range of problems from hair loss (from alopecia) to excess sweating, migraines and even teeth grinding. He treated a nurse who had terrible jaw pain and headaches from teeth
grinding. Tension in her jaw during her work day caused headaches when she got home and then she would grind her teeth at night, causing jaw pain. She even ground through her mouth guard! Dr Bezzina says patients who grind their teeth have enlarged jaw muscles. “The solution is to inject the botox into those muscles. Just like with wrinkles, the effect is to relax the muscles. This reduces both tension and the ability to bite down at night and grind.” “The patient now wakes in the morning with no jaw pain and she isn’t clenching her teeth as much during the day so the headaches have gone.” Meanwhile on the other side of the world, Dr Liyanage qualified in Sri Lanka. She was in charge of the blood bank at a major Colombo hospital while also working as a GP. Arriving in Australia in 2013, she initially practiced as a GP in Yass, where many of her farmer patients spent their days outdoors. “I saw so much skin cancer!” she says. Seeing the need for local doctors who could carry out skin procedures to remove cancers, Dr Liyanage has completed a Professional Certificate of Skin Cancer Surgery and embarked on a Diploma in Skin Cancer Medicine. “When you can diagnose a skin cancer early and remove it at the same time, the risks of complications are greatly reduced,” she says. ”I get enormous satisfaction in diagnosing and treating something that could otherwise have potentially very bad outcomes for a patient.” Both Dr Bezzina and Dr Liyanage practice from Ochre Medical Centre Casey. Dr Bezzina’s dermatology practice is based at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce.
On-site treatments available from Dr Bezzina at Ochre Medical Centre Casey Therapeutic Skin checks (full body or spot) — Dermatology (including complex rashes) — Skin cancer excision — Teeth grinding, jaw clenching and jaw pain — Scar treatment (injections, micro-needling and surgical revision) — Alopecia injections — Excess sweating (armpits, hands or feet) — Migraine management with botox

Mushroom and chive gyoza This week, food writer Libby Kimber brings you this recipe for flavour-filled, veggie-packed gyoza. Makes 20-25 Gyoza Vegetable oil for cooking 1 1/2 Tbsp ginger, minced 1 garlic clove, minced 300g cup mushrooms, finely diced 200g wombok, finely diced 1 tsp tamari sauce 1/2 bunch Chinese (garlic) chives, finely chopped
22
Dipping sauce 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tsp ginger, minced 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil 1 Tbsp tamari sauce or soy sauce 1 Tbsp honey 1 small chilli, finely sliced
25 gyoza wrappers (round gow gee pastry)
To serve
Water
1 tsp toasted sesame seeds canberraweekly.com.au
1 Tbsp Asian shallots, thinly sliced
Combine the dipping sauce ingredients into a jar and shake well. Set aside until you're ready to serve. To make the gyoza, heat a drizzle of vegetable oil in a wok or large heavy base fry pan with high sides on medium heat. Add ginger and garlic and sauté for a couple of minutes, then add the mushrooms to the pan. Cook until the mushrooms turn a golden brown colour. Add the wombok and stir through. After 1 minute, or once the wombok has wilted down and turned translucent, add 1 teaspoon tamari or soy sauce. Allow to simmer for a further 2 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the chives, and stir through. Transfer the gyoza mixture to a sieve to drain off any excess liquid while it cools down. Once the mix has completely cooled down, the gyoza can be wrapped. Place 1 1/2 teaspoons (depending on how big your wrappers are) of mixture into the centre of the wrapper. Brush the edge of the wrapper with water, then fold over the wrap so it looks like
a half moon shape. Gently press the wrapper seams together along the joined seam. Set aside while the rest are made. Lay a tea towel over the top to prevent them from drying out. Heat up a heavy base frypan to medium-high heat. Add a good drizzle of vegetable oil and place the gyoza’s bottom side down (so the seam is at the top). Allow to fry for a few minutes until the base of the pastry is a golden brown colour. Add a splash of water to the pan and place a lid on to steam them for a couple of minutes. Once the pastry has changed to a transparent colour and all the water has evaporated gently remove them from the pan. Set them aside while the remainder are cooked. Serve the gyoza on a platter with the dipping sauce in a small bowl to the side. Sprinkle over the top toasted sesame seeds and freshly sliced Asian shallots. Go Big director Lachlan Ross (left) and producer Dylan Simpson (right), pictured with former Canberra Capitals coach Carrie Graf, who won seven WNBL titles with the franchise. Photos supplied.
Documenting the Caps’ 2020 WNBL season saw director Lachlan Ross shadow the club throughout the six-week North Queensland-based competition that began in November.
Canberra filmmakers go home to Go Big A feature-length documentary covering the sustained prosperity of the WNBL’s most successful franchise, the UC Canberra Capitals, is in production with two local filmmakers shooting their best shots to make it happen. Titled Go Big, the feature-length documentary was inspired by director Lachlan Ross and producer Dylan Simpson’s combined passions for basketball and storytelling. Both grew up cheering on the Caps and feel strongly about the value of giving women’s sport the profile and coverage it deserves – inspired by the motto “you can’t be what you can’t see”. Raised in Canberra as aspiring basketballers, after the Cannons men’s team folded, the Caps were the big team in town, and a mighty successful one at that. “If you wanted to see pros and how they went about it, it was a women’s team you went and watched, which I think is quite different to a lot of other cities,” Ross said. Fast forward over a decade and the once aspiring basketballers, now creative storytellers, were keen to tell the tale of Australia’s most successful 24
canberraweekly.com.au
women’s basketball franchise. “We really wanted to cover women’s sport with high production value,” Simpson said. “Sport documentaries are so popular at the moment, but it’s still a dime-a-dozen with female protagonists.” Having won nine championships since being established in 1987, the side went into the 2020 season chasing their first ever three-peat. “They had failed to get a three-peat three times before; it felt like there was a bigger story at play,” Ross said.
Filmmakers granted ‘complete access’ Prior to filming, the pair had worked with the Caps in some capacity and had pre-existing contacts within the organisation. Simpson worked directly on the Caps’ ‘Go Big’ branding campaign, and Ross had been engaged by the club as a freelance videographer. The pair were able to gauge the interest of the Caps’ top brass, with an overwhelmingly positive reception to their pitch. “They’ve given us complete access,” Simpson said. “They really
understood what we wanted to achieve and appreciated the coverage.” “Everyone’s been really supportive of the project and allowed us to get those fly-on-the-wall scenes and content you wouldn’t otherwise see.” Documenting the Caps during a WNBL season like no other saw Ross shadow the club throughout the six-week North Queenslandbased competition that began in November capturing 30 hours of footage in that time. He was able to capture everything from the first training sessions and planning meetings through to the locker room after losing their semifinal – and everything in between. “As a storyteller it was incredible, I’ve never had that kind of access or ability to cover a story like that,” he said. Inspired by the narrative structure of 2020 Michael Jordan/Chicago Bulls documentary The Last Dance, Go Big follows the Caps’ 2020 season while dipping back into their history, covering pivotal moments in the franchise’s history like Carrie Graf joining in 1999, the historic milliondollar Lauren Jackson contract in 2011, and pioneering a pride jersey in 2015.
“We realised there’s such a bigger story to tell about women’s sport, but particularly the work that Carrie Graf and the Caps have done as an organisation,” Ross said. “What’s guided their long-term success is what they’ve done off the court,” Simpson added. “They pioneered women’s sport before it was the hot topic it is today.” Now moving into the second phase of production, the team are looking to raise $80,000 via the Documentary Australia Foundation to cover costs associated with interviewing a host of historic players and coaches, and post-production. Looking to complete the documentary by the end of this year, they’re calling on a full-court-press from the Canberra community to make it happen. An extensive four-hour master interview with Carrie Graf is already in the can, as are chats with Mariana Tolo and Paul Gorris before they left for the Tokyo Olympics. Canberra, the ball is in your court! Visit gobigdocumentary.com to support the project and for more. - Denholm Samaras

Canberra homecoming for Hands like Houses
On Friday 30 July, Hands Like Houses will play UC Refectory with support from Canberra hiphop icon Citizen Kay, local act Hope Wilkins and Sydney-based Polish Club. Photo: supplied.
Internationally renowned Canberra band, Hands Like Houses, will return to the stage this week for their first large-scale hometown gig in 18 months. On Friday 30 July, they will rock UC Refectory with support from Canberra hip-hop icon Citizen Kay, local act Hope Wilkins and Sydney-based Polish Club. Hands like Houses bassist Joel Tyrrell told Canberra Weekly the gig will be “very different” to their normal high-energy shows. “It’ll be stripped back and mostly acoustic with a few full band songs at the end, quite a different performance to what we would normally do,” he said. While still “very much hurting”
from the impact COVID-19 had on their 2020 touring schedule, Tyrrell said “it’s a good sign” they’re able to put on a big hometown show again. After a heavily disrupted 2020, Tyrrell said their Canberra show is an encouraging sign of recovery for the performing arts sector. Prior to Covid ruining their plans, Hands Like Houses had a big year booked in for 2020. At the end of 2019, they recorded new music at Avoca Beach, NSW. Released October 2020, their self-titled EP was the first album the band had recorded in Australia. The plan was to release the album and tour Australia, the USA, UK and Asia.

Now showing It was all going to kick off with a headlining gig at Download Festival, but that event was cancelled six days out, at which point their plans started unravelling. “That was the start of what slowly started peeling off as ‘okay, we might not be touring this year’,” Tyrrell said. Following a typical album release cycle for a band of their ilk, Hands Like Houses had planned to recover the costs of recording and producing their costs on tour. At the start of last year, they had 74 live shows booked across the world, but ultimately wound up playing only two. While quarantine-free international touring is still off
the cards, there have been signs of recovery lately for the band and the Australian performing arts scene more widely. Recently some of their gigs booked in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide have had to be rescheduled for later in the year, but at the start of 2021 they were able to get through four months of shows. For Tyrrell and the group, their large-scale Canberra gig “symbolises things somewhat returning to normal”. Hands Like Houses play the UC Refectory, Friday 30 July 8pm; tickets via moshtix. Nine Days (M) In a remote house surrounded by endless desert, Will (Winston Duke) spends his days watching multiple TV sets that show the point-of-view of certain people in the real world. Via interaction with his friend Kyo (Benedict Wong), we learn that Will is responsible for selecting souls to live life in the real world. One day, Will sees his favourite person, Amanda, die in a car crash, and soon must interview a new round of souls over the course of nine days to fill the vacancy. Supernatural religious dramas run the risk of being overly sentimental. City of Angels was grounded by its realistic setting, costuming and the very earnest performance of lead Nicholas Cage,
whereas The Shack was preachy to the point of condescension. Nine Days presents a metaphysical plane that is familiar and tactile. Will lives in a simple, wooden house with eclectic furnishings and uses analogue equipment to track his recruits. In a position of power, Will must interview and canvas a pool of potentials to determine which one is ultimately suitable for the real world. As Will judges the candidates, he too is challenged, especially by the non-conforming Emma (Zazie Beetz). Unlike his colleague Kyo, Will has experienced life and relies on real-world experiences to inform his judgements. The death of Amanda makes Will question his ability to perform his role, while the days count down to his delivery date. Verdict: A beautiful and greatly affecting meditation on the subjective meaning of life. 4.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk
Jeff Popple reviews three novels ideal for weekend winter reading. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Disappearing Act by Catherine Steadman Simon & Schuster, $32.99
The Disappearing Act by actress and author Catherine Steadman is a witty, lively and totally beguiling thriller that really hooks the reader in. The story about a British actress who travels to Los Angeles for the chaos of the ‘pilot season’ and finds herself caught up in a mysterious disappearance is well told and very captivating. The central character, Mia Eliot, is a terrific narrator, and her easy flowing storytelling quickly catches the reader up in its thrall. The pacing is brisk, and Catherine pulls off some wicked twists towards the end. The warm LA settings also make for the perfect fictional escape from a Canberra winter. Recommended.
Loving Lizzie March by Susannah Hardy Macmillan, $32.99
Sydney author Susannah Hardy also has a background in acting, and her debut novel Loving Lizzie March is a fun, warm-hearted romantic comedy with a good dollop of wit. The story about a failed fashion designer, Lizzie March, who finds herself pregnant to super-hot bad boy Jake Wheeler is an enjoyable romp through dating mishaps, romantic mix-ups and some mild stalking. The story unfolds smoothly, and Lizzie is an endearing central character, even if she is occasionally exasperating. Some serious issues underpin the story and there are touches of poignancy as Lizzie desperately searches for the wrong Mr Right. Good rom-com fun!
The Nameless Ones by John Connolly Hachette, $32.99
Much darker reading is provided by John Connolly’s The Nameless Ones. Although part of his Charlie Parker series, the focus this time is on the assassins Louis and Angel. When a colleague of theirs is brutally slaughtered in a canal house in Amsterdam, Louis and Angel set off to Europe to track down the killers, who are led by the brothers Vuksan, notorious Serbian gangsters and war criminals. As usual, Connolly brings a poet’s eye to the storytelling and there are some lovely, evocative passages amid the harshness of the plot. There are also the trademark touches of the supernatural. A richly textured thriller that grips to the end.

Lilli, who grew up in Canberra, is completing her honours in a Bachelor of Fashion (Design) at RMIT in Melbourne, and says sustainability is the way forward for designers. “I think it’s so great how a lot of designers today are using sustainability as a motivator for creating new and exciting designs,” she says. “We have to consider where the

The quest for a ‘happy uterus’ “I had quite a bit of pain, I took a lot of painkillers.” “I never related to the symptoms.” “I always assumed it was normal.” These are phrases people living with endometriosis, or endo, know all too well. The gynaecological condition is believed to affect more than 830,000 people in Australia, with 6.5 years the average wait time for a definitive diagnosis. One of those 830,000 people is Canberra woman Nat van Dartel. While her diagnosis “only” took eight months, she says she grew up with painful periods that she assumed were normal. In mid-2019, she began experiencing ruptured endometrioma (cysts) every month – “life just stopped every time this happened, the pain would be
constant” – which led to surgery, an endometriosis diagnosis, and a long period of recovery. Despite surgery, Nat’s endo symptoms continue, and have prompted her to create the Happy Uterus – wearable heat packs to help relieve endo symptoms. “About six months post-op I was still using heat packs most nights and I remember thinking ‘it would be nice if I didn’t have to tuck this into my pants’,” she says. The heat packs come in different sizes and a range of colours, patterns and prints – they’re designed to be on show and can be worn anywhere and everywhere. “There’s nothing secretive or hidden about what our products are used for,” Nat says. “Endo or other chronic gynaecological conditions can be so isolating because
people are embarrassed to tell their colleagues or friends.” Every sale will see $2 donated to Endometriosis Australia to support their work in education and research into the disease – an area that’s seen to be significantly overlooked and underfunded. It’s because of this that the endo community has formed, supporting one another in-person and online, sharing stories, triumphs and tips for managing symptoms and flare-ups. “In the absence of comprehensive medical research, people lean on each other and share their experiences,” Nat says. “Collectively, it’s a huge knowledge bank. “I am so grateful to be able to make something positive out of something that felt like such a setback in my life.”
Nat van Dartel is the 25-year-old Canberran behind the Happy Uterus, wearable heat packs that are designed to be shown off and start a conversation about gynaecological health. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.

Bloody comfy period undies $24.95 Bonds
Plastic-free periods It’s Plastic Free July, so we’re turning our attention to some of the ways we can reduce waste in our everyday lives. A good place to start is in the bathroom, and in particular, with period products – the average Australian who menstruates will use more than 10,000 in their lifetime, and it can take hundreds of years for things like pads and tampons to break down. Carol Morris from menstrual cup company Lunette says modern, sustainable sanitary products are now the mainstream, with options that will suit most people and lifestyles. Here are her top tips for ‘greening your period’.
Menstrual cups “Holding a mighty 20-30ml depending on the brand, [menstrual cups] can be worn during sport and
overnight, and [they] last years.”
Menstrual cups From $55 each Stockists: lunette.com.au
Period undies There is a huge range of period undies out there to suit your style and flow, says Carol. They fit just like regular underpants but have a built-in, absorbent liner that can hold up to three tampons’ worth. “Perfect for use with a menstrual cup and fantastic for tweens and teens who want a simple way to deal with periods at school.”
also for teens,” Carol says.
Keep it natural If you’d rather keep to disposable products, that’s okay! There are a wide range of period products out there that are made with natural fi bres that decompose much faster than those containing plastics.
Ultra pad Me. overnight pads $29.95 $4.50 thebrandhannah.com.au Coles
Mix it up Cloth pads
Carol says it’s a journey to discover what works for you, so give a few different things a go and ease into it! “Try using reusables at home and biodegradable disposables when out, cloth pads for work and a menstrual cup for overnight, period pants for gym and biodegradable tampons for swimming.”
Reusable cloth pads come in a range of colours and prints with a waterproof backing. They sit just like regular, disposable pads, typically held in place with press studs. “Great for use at the end of your period when you don’t feel like using an internal product, and
Treat the cause of your condition, not just the symptoms.
While it’s great to be sustainable and environmentally conscious, it’s not always possible or safe for everyone to use reusable period products. For some, lack of access to running water, soap or affordable period products means single-use period products are the best way to go. Head to sharethedignity. com.au for more information on ending period poverty in Australia and how you can help.

A family oasis Mawson 11 Markham Street In the heart of the Woden Valley, this home ticks all the boxes for family living. Ray White Canberra sales associate Maddie Holst says the house is well-situated on the block, facing north-east to capture the morning sun. “The house is in a fabulous location! “It sits at the end of a quiet culde-sac, five minutes’ walk from The Canberra Hospital. Noteworthy restaurants, a well-stocked IGA and a hairdresser are a one-minute stroll away at Swinger Hill shops. 38

“It’s also very handy to Westfield Woden and the Phillip commercial area.” The home boasts three bedrooms, the master with ensuite, a study, and several living areas that take in the views that stretch towards the mountains. The landscaped gardens are lowmaintenance and are home to an alfresco area and in-ground, selfcleaning pool. “This is a wonderful family home for a couple with two children of any age,” says Ray White Canberra sales consultant Cameron Whitnall.
“There are lots of extra spaces, such as a sunroom and a study, that would suit people working from home. “The swimming pool and the easy-care large garden are an extra bonus. “It is wonderfully warm on even the very coldest Canberra day because of the fabulous ducted heating system, and comfortably cool on the very hottest Canberra day,” Whitnall says. “The house has evaporative cooling and because it sits high on its block, it catches beautiful cross breezes.”

Industry needs to take COVID risk seriously: Master Builders Master Builders ACT has warned local builders and contractors to be “on alert” for Sydney-based workers travelling to the Territory due to the pause on construction work in Greater Sydney. “There should be no-one from Greater Sydney working on an ACT construction site unless they have obtained an approved exemption from ACT Health issued for that specific project site,” said CEO Michael Hopkins. “To help keep the ACT COVID-free, the local construction industry needs to take very seriously the COVID risk surrounding the ACT.” Master Builders has previously urged ACT construction workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19 when eligible.
As well, there are some concerns about a shortage of construction workers on infrastructure projects as Greater Sydney’s ‘construction lockdown’ continues and the ACT’s border remains closed to the region. ACT Transport Minister Chris Steel said on ABC radio the ACT Government is monitoring the situation. Mr Steel said many people were already staying in the ACT when Sydney’s lockdown occurred and so have been able to continue to work but that there could be issues for larger companies which draw workers from interstate. “Hopefully this lockdown won’t last for a period of time where it causes that level of disruption but it is a concern, absolutely.”
Sustainable pilot begins A pilot program for the ACT Government’s Sustainable Household Scheme has begun, which will see a small number of households have access to zerointerest loans for energy efficient home upgrades. The ACT Government has partnered with loan provider Brighte to deliver the scheme. The pilot program will be used to “test and refine” the system before the scheme is opened to all eligible households and individuals.
Greenway retirement facility recognised LDK’s mixed-use retirement facility, Greenway Views in Tuggeranong, has been awarded the ACT’s top property gong, named as the Rider Levett Bucknall ACT Development of the Year. Occupying the building formerly home to the Department of Social Services, Greenway Views is now a high-end retirement village with 210 apartments.

saturday’s full moon signals key developments in a business partnership and, for some, a change of routine or a fresh chapter at work. news on Monday and/or Friday will give you the heads-up about how best to proceed with work and personal circumstances. Be clear to avoid mixups if communications are tense.
you’ll appreciate the chance this weekend to indulge in your favourite hobbies, but you must be careful to avoid getting on the wrong side of someone you rely on. Be adaptable and tactful for best results, especially on Monday and Friday, as a new chapter begins at home or with family.
Be prepared for fresh beginnings both in your personal life and in your daily schedule. Keep communications transparent for best effect. This weekend’s Aquarian full moon signals the end of a long phase in your life – and the start of a new one, especially if you were born in january or after mid-February.

Motivational Mars will enter Virgo on Friday, encouraging you to catapult your ideas and plans into fresh territory. Be practical and inspired, as you could find success over the next six weeks, particularly at work, health-wise and in your personal life. just avoid conflict, as this will delay your plans.
saturday’s full moon signals the chance to re-evaluate your priorities, especially regarding your relationships and principles. If your priorities differ to those of someone close, you must compromise. you’ll benefit by updating your communication devices and being more open to people’s ideas while researching your own plans.
saturday’s full moon brings a fresh phase for you where you’ll be drawn to do something different at work and meet new people. Be prepared to broaden your social circle and adapt to new circumstances in your personal life. There will be news that could also be intense, so pace yourself.
saturday’s full moon points to a breakthrough in one of your favourite activities, so ensure you pursue your goals now. For some Geminis, the focus will be on finances and investments and on how to succeed with shared duties and shared areas such as space at home and taxes.

Commercial and Residential Furniture
Containing the brand’s cult-favourite Vitis Vinifera Rejuvenating Gel Cleanser, Rejuvenating Essence and Rejuvenating Essential Crème, this nourishing 3-step system is enriched with stem cells from a specific genus of French grapes called the Gamay Teinturier Fréaux. As a source rich in natural anthocyanins, this powerful antioxidant protects the skin from environmental aggressors, including UV-induced free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Infused with green tea, witch hazel and aloe vera, this gentle and effective system soothes and hydrates the skin while combatting the physical signs of premature ageing.
