contents 10 From the editor Music – especially live music – has the power to lift one’s spirits and affect one’s mood like nothing else. This was evident at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s sold-out CSO at the Cinema concert on Saturday night, where our stellar local musicians performed a selection of works from movies as varied as Hollywood blockbusters to indie short films. The emotional rollercoaster took us from John Williams’ glistening, magical Hedwig’s Theme from the Harry Potter franchise, to his iconic, blazing Star Wars anthem and his deeply affecting, haunting score from Schindler’s List. We were transfixed by the precise, staccato movements of the strings as they pulsed to Bernard Herrmann’s shrill suite from Psycho, and transported to the city of romance by George Gershwin’s orchestral piece adopted for An American in Paris. There were beautiful scores by Dmitri Shostakovich and Ennio Morricone, yet I was most moved by two Australian compositions - Nigel Westlake’s enchanting suite from Paper Planes, and the debut live performance of the suite from To Rest in Peace by Canberra’s own Leah Curtis. “Music is the soundtrack of life” as the saying goes. Reasons to be grateful this past week include our Canberra Symphony Orchestra, live music, an alfresco lunch with friends at Kingston Foreshore, chocolate peanut butter, a ripe banana, the neighbour’s cat purring on my lap, and winter sunshine. Play on!

Barr predicts ‘rosy’ future for ACT economy ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has never experienced a more challenging period in which to govern, he told Canberra’s business community in his annual State of the Territory Business Address at the Hyatt Hotel this week. COVID-19 had created massive uncertainty for government and businesses; nevertheless, Mr Barr predicted a rosy future for the
The upcoming ACT 2021/22 Budget will focus on economic recovery, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said at the annual State of the Territory Business Address on Monday.
ACT’s economy. The ACT was one of Australia’s strongest economies; it had performed 20% above the decadelong average this year. On current trajectory, Mr Barr predicted the ACT economy would grow larger than the Northern Territory and Tasmania combined in the next decade. It was also the only subnational government in the AsiaPacific region with a gold AAA rating. Mr Barr said the ACT 2021/22 Budget, to be released this month, will focus on economic recovery. Priorities include creating jobs through record investments in public health and education and training, and increasing Canberra’s public housing stock. Travel restrictions and border closures had harmed tourism businesses that rely on interstate visitors, he acknowledged; 90% of the traditional visitor market had
not been able to travel to the ACT. Last month, the ACT Government announced targeted financial assistance for the tourism sector, including support for accommodation and tourism venue operators. Mr Barr has asked the Commonwealth to set up nationally consistent support for tourism and hospitality businesses and workers, and to extend the COVID-19 disaster payment to tourism and hospitality workers who lost income because of outbreaks in other jurisdictions. According to the Chief Minister, the highest priority for the ACT was to vaccinate as many people as possible. “Do what you can to encourage and support your employees to get vaccinated,” he asked Canberra’s business leaders. Mr Barr hoped every Canberran would have the opportunity to be vaccinated by the end of the year. Canberra’s vaccination rate was one
of the highest in the country; the ACT could be at 80% before the rest of the country reached 70%. More than half the adult population had had their first dose; a quarter were fully vaccinated; a third of the Generation Y cohort (22,000 people) had booked their first jab on the first day; and the ACT was the only jurisdiction where 90% of people over 70 had received their first vaccination. This spring and summer, more vaccinations would be available through GPs and pharmacists. In the meantime, Mr Barr said, his government was prepared to impose lockdown if there was the risk of community transmission. “We all have a stake in this. Economic recovery is dependent on the successful vaccine rollout. Every Canberran who gets vaccinated is another small step towards normality.” - Nick Fuller
New wrap takes to the tracks for Rail Safety Week As of this morning, the ACT’s light rail has a new look, wrapped in graphics designed by a local student to encourage rail safety in all Canberrans. Ada Miller, who is in Year 12 at Gungahlin College, joins her pop art predecessor as the winner of
the second competition to design a new wrap for the light rail. She was inspired by postmodern art, as well as the rush of the daily commute. “I see students every day rushing to get to school on time. I made ‘Don’t rush or be crushed’

the main message because I thought it was very important to be forward in speaking to that demographic,” the young artist said. “You’ve got to be straightforward for kids to listen.” Ms Miller’s work was unveiled on Monday to coincide with National Rail Safety Week, 9-15 August. “I spent three or four months working on the design. It feels unreal to see it on such a big stage.” Bruno Lancelot, general manager of Canberra Metro Operations (CMET), said the best part of the artful campaign, and why it was continued this year, is because of the talk it inspires. “When you get people talking, you raise awareness and potentially reduce rail safety risk,” Mr Lancelot said. “As a city, our rail safety risk is
high. We are lucky to not have had many critical incidents. However, CMET records all near misses. “Currently, 80% of near misses involve the driver employing the emergency brake. This shows a severe risk. It means our operators are having to react quickly to protect our community.” According to the CMET, there is a near miss every three to four days in Canberra. “Looking at your phone, being distracted by headphones, or an earpiece – all it takes is a split second to severely affect your life,” Mr Lancelot said. ACT Policing is conducting high visibility patrols during Rail Safety Week, as well as further traffic operations along the light rail corridor as part of a monthlong focus on commuter safety. - Anja de Rozario

Fear blocks the road to Covid freedom My resolve to write no more columns about the coronavirus circus besetting this country took a tumble when I ran into a friend last week who told me he wouldn’t be getting vaccinated against Covid-19. “You know the vaccines are killing thousands, don’t you?” he asked, conspiratorially. My friend is in his late 60s. He has been watching US ultra conservative websites that preach the danger of vaccination and spruik the use of hydroxychloroquine (a type of bleach) to prevent catching Covid. There was no persuading him. Nothing short of brute force will get a jab into that man’s arm. Which is bad news, not just for him but for all of us. This is because, under the roadmap out of Covid announced by the Prime Minister, 80% of Australians will need to be fully vaccinated before we have any
real chance of getting off the treadmill of state-wide lockdowns and border closures. The target is based on solid research from the Doherty Institute. To open up our economy again, to resurrect jobs killed by earlier lockdowns and to prise open the door to international travel, it will be essential to reach that 80% target. So those who – through fear, misinformation or religious conviction – make an active decision not to be vaccinated put at risk the return to freedom that all of us so deeply crave. Government research suggests that 77% of Australians are comfortable being vaccinated; only a small additional effort required to persuade another 3% to get the jab, right? Except that sudden changes in public perception of the vaccine rollout can have devastating effects
on take-up rates. A good example are the bizarre statements by the Queensland Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young, about the “dangers” of the AstraZeneca vaccine. She warned younger Queenslanders not to get this vaccine because of the risk of blood clots. Dr Young is out on a limb with these pronouncements. All other public health authorities are recommending AstraZeneca for people under 60. And for good reason. We cannot reach the 80% target by the end of the year without relying on AstraZeneca, and the risks associated with this vaccine have been grossly overstated. The Doherty Institute research shows no meaningful difference between the effectiveness of AstraZeneca and, say, Pfizer. Both
WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR
dramatically reduce the rate of death and hospitalisation. Australia needs both these drugs to break free of the grip of the coronavirus. But perceptions are powerful. In the welter of statistics and pronouncements swirling through the media, people – vulnerable people – have picked up the message that something is wrong with AstraZeneca, and are holding back. Incentives to get vaccinated (like Labor’s $300 bonus payment), or penalties on those who hold out (like no international travel) may bridge the gap, but we should not underestimate how many feel so strongly that they will resist all efforts at persuasion. And in a society where individual choice reigns, we will all be poorer for such terrible choices.

Rental reforms on the cards, Rattenbury announces The ACT Government could reform the law to make rentals fairer and safer for tenants, Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury announced last week. The government would amend the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 to end no cause evictions, preventing landlords from evicting tenants without cause with six months’ notice; to restrict rent bidding, an artificial mechanism for landlords and agents to drive up property prices; to mandate minimum standards, ensuring rental properties are accessible, safe and clean; and even to encourage tenants to grow their own food, create vegetable gardens, and compost. The public can comment on the discussion paper until September. Mr Rattenbury is already drafting
legislation, which he hopes to put before the Legislative Assembly late this year or early next. He said almost a third of Canberrans rented, and there was a lot of pressure to get and hang onto rental properties. “In a tight rental market like we have now, tenants are fearful of raising concerns about properties,” Mr Rattenbury said. “We need to make sure they’re able to assert their rights.” ACT Council of Social Service welcomed the proposals; they had called on the ACT Government to strengthen the Act to protect renters. Joel Dignam, executive director of Better Renting, thought these reforms were necessary. But property investors fear they could lead to fewer properties and higher rents; in a worst-case
scenario, almost 10,000 properties could be removed from the market, according to Michelle Tynan, CEO of the Real Estate Institute of the ACT (REIACT). “For many investment owners in the ACT, these measures and other proposed changes could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” she said. Changes to the Residential Tenancies Act in 2019, increasing land tax and rates had made it too onerous for many investors to have a rental property in the ACT, Ms Tynan argued. Instead, property owners might simply sell their properties. “Given the current market conditions in the ACT, for many, this will be a very attractive alternative.” REIACT wants the ACT Government to establish a
committee to investigate and provide fully costed recommendations to government. Mr Rattenbury disagreed that reforms would lead to a smaller, more expensive rental market. He expected landlords would come into the market, whether as a financial investment or because owners went overseas or interstate. “People see this as an opportunity.” Mr Dignam was also sceptical of Ms Tynan’s claims. “Every time rental reform is debated, we see this fearmongering from property investors – that there will be a huge shock and it won’t be profitable anymore. It simply never eventuates.” - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au

Labor MP Alicia Payne believably reports that young Australians are concerned about “climate change, housing affordability and social justice” (CW, 5 August 2021, p10). So it was pleasing to read that Ms Payne is initiating two ‘town halls’ in August providing forums to discuss “youth representation and inclusion in politics”. Pre-covid, young Australians demonstrated in their tens of thousands wanting stronger government action on climate change. Reinstating the trust of young Australians in the political process that they perceive has recently let them down will have positive outcomes, not just for Australia down the track, but also for the wellbeing of the young people themselves. - R. Peck, Hawthorn, Victoria
In defence of ‘white men’ In CW, 5 August 2021, p8, Anja de Rozario quotes Bradley Mapiva-Brown stating that “The last Territory Coat of Arms did not represent us ... It came from some white men on a hill.” Sadly in 2021 people like [Mr] MapivaBrown are using sexism and ageism to justify something they are not happy with or don’t agree with. Do [they] use this degrading language to describe the vast majority of Australians who went to fight for our country in World Wars or who have worked tooth and nail to build the roads and infrastructure that people like [them] can enjoy today. It is stated that [Mr] Mapiva-Brown was recruited by the ACT Government to join the reference group. What would be interesting is to see the breakdown of the people selected to design the new coat of arms. I strongly suspect there are not many white men on the project. - I. Pilsner, Weston

More health services on offer in Casey
In May we spoke to dietitian Jacqui Bampton who had just joined the allied health team at Ochre Medical Centre Casey. This month, we meet physio Alicia Spencer and podiatrist Alex Murray, with the clinic now becoming a full-service health hub.
Physio on a mission Alicia Spencer always wanted a Physiotherapy career. “I played a lot of sport growing up and worked a lot with Physiotherapists for my knee issues. I was always interested in human biology throughout school - it was a natural path for me,” she says. As a graduate working in Canberra Hospital’s antenatal and postnatal wards, she found her niche - Pelvic Health. “As women, there is a lot we don’t know about our own bodies! I wanted to delve into those taboo subjects and work with all women, including those who are pregnant, throughout their pre and postnatal journey, or suffering sexual or pelvic pain.” A consultation with Alicia begins with a comprehensive assessment in understanding where her patient is at, and what’s required to help them
I won’t stop you doing what you love!
Casey podiatrist, Alex Murray, finds complex patients particularly rewarding. “They’ve been through a lot and they’re often very confused. We can’t solve all their problems on the spot, but we can help them make sense of their care and take back control – and that is always really satisfying.” As well as his podiatry training, Alex has studied the science of pain and rehabilitation to understand why some people don’t respond predictably to treatments. He aims to help people continue to move and enjoy their life during their recovery, rather than waiting until they’re better. “At university we were taught ‘this is the problem and this is the

If what she finds is beyond her expertise, she refers to a GP, Gynaecologist, Obstetrician or Sex Therapist. That’s where the Ochre connection comes into its own: “Being able to refer clients to a great doctor down the corridor is very helpful – our network of clinicians here in Casey is excellent.” Alternatively, she develops a tailored educational and/or exercise program, which can make a real difference. One recent client had a fairly severe uterine prolapse: “She’d seen medical professionals and thought surgery was her only option. I outlined some different approaches for her. Over months of pelvic floor work, manual therapy and through changes to her bladder and bowel health, she went from a grade 2 prolapse to a grade 1 prolapse, treatment’, but in clinical practice, there’s so much more going on – people are not machines and cases are often not like the textbook.” On top of his clinical work, Alex mentors new podiatrists, lectures to international audiences on pain and rehabilitation and is an education partner for leading Norwegian research group CauseHealth. He says CauseHealth is challenging how podiatrists approach practice. “We’re moving from a model of: ‘mountain biking hurts, so stop doing it’ to understanding more about the patient and why mountain biking is causing them pain, then modifying the activity.” “Long term, people who stay active do better than those who don’t. ‘Stop’ is not in my vocabulary - unless there’s a really good reason! I might not recommend you do the same amount of an activity, but things have to be really bad before I’ll stop you completely.” Although he has extensive experience in treating high performance athletes, Alex has patients across the spectrum. “Yesterday I saw an 85 year old woman who had some ankle pain but wanted to keep going to the gym and walking. I said ‘Great, let’s do it!’ ” Alex practices at Ochre Medical Centre Casey on Mondays and Wednesdays.
meaning surgery was no longer even a consideration. You can imagine how pleased she was!” “I am on a mission to let women know that Physiotherapy is an option within this area. I want to make these conversations less
taboo and allow women to feel comfortable talking about it.” Alicia practices at Ochre Medical Centre Casey on Mondays, Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays, and offers a mobile physio service.

news Grant funds new fitness group ‘Her Way’ is the bike path, Labor MLA believes
An initiative to develop a fitness group for Indigenous mothers and their toddlers has won the support of the Heart Foundation’s annual Active Australia Innovation Challenge, to the tune of $10,000 in funding. Out of 619 entries, double the number of entries from last year, YWCA Canberra’s plan to start a ‘Mums and Bubs’ exercise group in South Tuggeranong for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their pre-school-aged children took the pot. According to the YWCA, there are currently no culturally-specific, safe spaces that facilitate physical activity for the demographic in this locale, despite Tuggeranong showing the highest proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents in the ACT in the 2006 Census. The group will meet for two
hours a week, providing a regular, trustworthy, and safe space for Indigenous women and their children to take part in play-based activities. The project aims to improve participants’ attitudes and access to physical health overall. The funding will go towards the development of a culturally appropriate activity program, as well as buying equipment such as mats, balls, a shade sail, and Indigenous items like clapping sticks. Since the beginning of the active challenge, the number of annual participants has increased almost five-fold. Heart Foundation’s NSW & ACT Heart Health manager, Anna Flynn noted the importance of this increased participation, given around six in 10 people in the ACT are not active enough for good heart health. - Anja de Rozario
The light rail stage two disruption could be an opportunity for southside women to get fitter, Labor MLA Dr Marisa Paterson believes. She is launching Her Way, a women’s active travel campaign. Women could change their travel patterns and routines to walk, cycle, or scoot to work, avoiding peak hour traffic. Taking a different route or getting out of the car altogether will make commuting easier and less stressful while construction closes parts of Commonwealth Avenue, Dr Paterson suggests, and relieve pressure and congestion for those people who do need to drive to work. She particularly wants to help women who want to transition away from using their cars, but who might be concerned about it, or not know where to start. “I’m not a bike rider,” Dr Paterson said. “I’m probably like many other people: I’d like to; it would be a great
thing if I could do it; it’s healthy – but life gets in the way. I also get concerned about riding on the roads; I’m not very confident. “So I want to speak to similar women who would like to do it, understand what their barriers are, and how we might address that as a government.” Pedal Power ACT and women members of the Canberra Cycling Club have welcomed her proposal. But Canberra Liberal MLA Giulia Jones called Dr Paterson’s campaign “an insult to Canberra women”. “It is rich for a member of this government to suggest that women should change travel habits to accommodate construction that this Labor-Greens government hasn’t adequately planned for,” Mrs Jones said. - Nick Fuller Visit canberraweekly.com.au to read more on this subject.
New data shows most important Red Nose Day yet Red Nose Day is this Friday 13 August. Every dollar raised from the Day goes towards saving newborn lives through funding research, education, and advice for new parents – including the Red Nose Safe Sleep Advice Line. Red Nose’s efforts are especially important in light of new statistics released by the Australian Government, revealing a 20% increase in sudden infant deaths (SIDS) and fatal sleeping accidents in Australia between 2017 and 2018. There were 112 instances of SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents in 2018, up from 93 the previous year. Sadly, the data also shows 2,116 stillbirths, with almost no decrease 14

from 2017. More than 300,000 babies are born in Australia each year, and in the era of COVID-19, some maternity services are becoming financially inaccessible. Birth bookings at a number of public hospitals are up by 35% due to the reported lockdown baby boom. This Friday, Red Nose is aiming to raise $700,000 to keep their programs free and available to every Australian parent. “Red Nose has worked relentlessly over the past three decades to reduce SIDS in Australia by more than 85%,” says Keren Ludski, Co-CEO of Red Nose Australia. - Anja de Rozario

Chrissie Atkinson and Julie Boulton from the Canberra Environment Centre will arm their workshop participants with simple tips for a more sustainable kitchen.
Science Week festival looks to the future of food As part of National Science Week, 14-22 August, a Canberra food festival is looking to the future: what will food look like in the years to come? How will we produce it and how can we ensure our plates are sustainable? Served With a Side of Science will see workshops and events across the ACT look at how we consume food and the effect on our environment. As well, Canberrans will get a chance to look behind the scenes at some of the ACT’s most innovative businesses that are transforming the way we look at food, waste, and sustainability. One such business is Goterra, a waste management company harnessing the power of insects to process food waste. “We farm insects to do jobs, and we build robotic systems to empower those insects to do jobs,” says Goterra CEO, Olympia Yarger. “We farm two types of insects here, black soldier fly, which are a non-pest, non-vector, fly species, and then we farm mealworms 16
canberraweekly.com.au
which are a beetle that we farm for human consumption.” Ms Yarger says the capacity for us to produce enough protein to feed the population in 2050 can’t be realised – “we have a 20% shortfall” – which is where insects come in. “We need animals that can be raised on commodities that are currently not taken by conventional agriculture, and we need to be able to raise our food in climate controlled, non-arable locations.” Ms Yarger says insects farmed to feed both animals and humans don’t require sunlight, water or land to produce kilos of protein, and so are more stable in their production capability. The next step, she says, is getting over the ‘ick factor’ and getting people to understand how to use and consume insect protein. “I think what’s changed is people care more about trying to … make meaningful changes to contribute to saving the world and being sustainable. “Our concern over what we’re
doing to the planet is bigger than what our ick factor is.”
From little things, big things grow The Canberra Environment Centre (CEC) will be looking ahead this weekend, too, asking their workshop participants to imagine the future of food. The ‘Maker Burger’ workshop, for primary school-aged children, will look at our habits in the kitchen and at the shops, and educate future generations on more sustainable practices when it comes to sourcing and preparing food. “The whole idea is ‘what is sustainable food?’ And why you need to think about how sustainable your food is before you buy it,” says CEC workshop facilitator, Julie Boulton. “Without food … we don’t have a future. “With more and more people on the planet, the pressure on our food systems is growing … there are things that we can all do that we’ve got control over, that we can start making some shifts in
what we’re doing now, which will benefit our future.” Participants will prepare a burger collage made with recycled materials (like the one on our front cover!) and discuss the ingredients and their impact on the planet. They’ll also plant their own tomato seeds to take home to start their own garden, and leave armed with some simple tips on creating a more sustainable kitchen. “We’re going to get them to think quite deeply about tomatoes and where the tomatoes they’re eating might have come from, and how sustainable they are, but on multiple levels,” says Chrissie Atkinson, CEC’s workshop coordinator. “So maybe how far they’ve travelled, how they’re packaged, and how they were grown in the first place.” Served with a side of science: A Canberra food festival will run all weekend, 14-15 August; visit inspiringtheact.org.au for more and to find an event. - Libby Kimber

Cheeky Chicken: A home away from home
Cheeky Chicken Early Learning Centre (ELC) in Hughes is raising the bar when it comes to children’s education. Child-led programs, indooroutdoor learning, and mixedage groups make the centre a home away from home. Cheeky Chicken’s educational program reflects the early learning framework, is playbased and built around the children and their interests. A standout feature of Cheeky Chicken is its amazing natural garden, it breaks the mould for the industry, these outdoor play areas form a large part of the program. The centre’s model incorporates mixed-age groups, allowing the children to develop their social skills and be with their siblings rather than being separated from family. The younger children’s social and language development benefits from the model, and the older children benefit in helping
their younger classmates. The centre even has its own van, a brilliant resource for the Cheeky Chicken children to explore all Canberra has to offer. Also undertaking year-round excursions across Canberra, from the Botanic Gardens to art galleries, everyone loves these trips that allow the children to experience the world around them. This boutique centre has well above the required educatorto-child ratios. Because of this, each child is free to take supervised, calculated risks, which is important for social development and inquiry-based learning. Mills leads Boomers to emotional medal Canberra’s Patty Mills scored 42 points to drag Australia past Slovenia 107-93 in Tokyo’s bronze playoff and secure the Boomers’ first Olympic men’s basketball medal. The Australian flagbearer, in his fourth Games campaign, notched his highest Olympic total and added nine assists to ensure the Boomers prevailed after losing four previous play-offs for third. An emotional Mills said he couldn’t wait to bring his medal home and hang it at his parents’
house. “We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time; it’s taken a lot of ups, a lot of downs for us to get over the hump,” said Mills. “It’s our culture, Aussie spirit, the boys being able to hang together. “Now we’ve made it over the hill, this is the standard now for Australian basketball for men. “I don’t know whether to cry, laugh, smile – a lot of emotions. “It’s time to bring an Olympic medal home ... so I can hang it up at Mum and Dad’s house.”
Barber wins javelin bronze 76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax

Canberra’s Kelsey-Lee Barber’s reputation for performing best when it matters the absolute most has been further enhanced in the javelin final at the Tokyo Olympics. The 29-year-old was battling serious form and confidence issues only a few months ago
but managed to perform on the biggest stage to claim the bronze medal. In third place going into the concluding round and assured of a medal, Barber’s last throw of 64.56m in Friday night’s final was her biggest of the year.
Raiders back into top eight The Canberra Raiders have moved back into the top eight with a scrappy 20-12 win over the St George Illawarra Dragons on the Gold Coast on Friday 6 August. The Dragons started the better of the sides to take an early lead, but the Raiders managed two tries to Jordan Rapana and Jack Wighton to level the scores at 12-12 at half time. Tom Starling burrowed his way over from close range to give
Canberra their first lead of the match early in the second half and were never seriously challenged from then on. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart was happy to take the win but knows his side must improve when they take on the Melbourne Storm on tonight, Thursday 12 August. “It’s a win,” Stuart said. “If we defend like that in the first half next week, we’ll get beaten by 60.”

Sam Taylor starred as the GWS Giants secured a famous 19-point victory over the Geelong Cats at GMHBA stadium on Friday night, 6 August. Taylor was enormous down back with 17 intercept possessions as GWS caused a 13.6 (84) to 8.17
(65) boilover, giving their finals chances a massive boost in the process. The undermanned Giants were forced into eight changes for the match but pulled off an incredible upset to put themselves back into the top eight.

One of GIVIT’s registered charities is working hard to create a refuge that not only provides a warm, safe place for homeless men to sleep, but also an environment for relaxation, connection and dignity. The all-male crisis accommodation facility was established last year and has helped over 100 men avoid sleeping out in the cold over the past two Canberra winters. The facility provides short-term respite with a warm private room, access to a shower, hot meals, and a communal lounge. The organisation is seeking a DVD player and sound system, which they can set up in the communal area, for fun movie nights to bring the men together. Any pre-loved, good quality items that can be donated would be greatly appreciated. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whats-needed, search by “Music and Entertainment” within the ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off..

Taste the rainbow
We could all use a little festive fun right now, so food writer Libby Kimber this week brings you some colourful combos that will taste as good as they look.
Sparkling rainbow Rainbow lemonade jelly layers
Fill a SodaStream 1 litre bottle to the fill line with cold water and carbonate.
1L SodaStream sparkling water
To make the rainbow lemonade jelly layers, mix the sparkling water with lemonade syrup. Set aside.
Soda Press Co organic lemonade syrup Mix of coloured jelly packets (I used purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red jelly) Vanilla panna cotta 750ml cream, pure
26
2 large handfuls of spiralised vegetables, such as carrot, beetroot and zucchini Small handful of parsley leaves 1/2 avocado, sliced
For the vanilla panna cotta, combine the cream, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan over medium-low heat and gently warm. Squeeze excess water from the gelatine and stir into the cream mixture until dissolved, then stir in the milk. Strain mixture into a large bowl or jug and set aside for 15 minutes or until lightly set.
Lemony tahini dressing
20g titanium-strength gelatine leaves, soaked in cold water to soften 250ml milk
Recipe by Anna Polyviou for SodaStream to celebrate Pride Month.
2 vanilla pods
1 sun-dried tomato wrap
Prepare all of the jelly flavours in separate bowls to packet instructions, adding the lemonade mixture in place of the cold water. Set aside.
Pour a thin layer of purple jelly into the base of a serving dish. Place in the fridge to lightly set, then top with a thin layer of panna cotta, making sure the layers are even. Return to the fridge to lightly set. Continue layering evenly with all the colours of jelly (in whatever order you like!) and remaining panna cotta mixture, making sure you allow each layer to set slightly before adding the next. Once layered, transfer the serving bowl to the fridge to set completely before serving.

Food for thought (from page 27) Fan favourite Monster Kitchen and Bar has recruited a new executive chef to join their “veg-olution”, welcoming Matthew Bentley to the pass. Bentley has previously worked in Michelin Star restaurants in the Netherlands, and in Norway, and comes to Canberra from Margaret River’s five-star Bunker Bay resort. He says the Canberra food scene is “intriguing”, with opportunity to design passionate menus using local produce. The new menu celebrates root veg, with an a la carte menu to warm you from the inside out, complementing the set menu which sees technicality and adventure come together to make vegetables “the life of the party”. Monster has been “a herbivore” since late last year, and is passionate about showing off the flavours of quality ingredients that are locally and ethically sourced. Canberra actor Jo Richards plays a highway police officer named Angela in Twenty Minutes With The Devil, a dramatic reimaging of the 2016 arrest of El Chapo. Photos: Denholm Samaras.
Describing Angela as “morally strict” and “deeply religious” despite facing constant ambiguity, Richards has found the role profoundly engaging due to its complexity.
Doing a deal with the devil Remember when the world was captivated by the dramatic prison break and subsequent arrest of Mexican drug lord, El Chapo? His bizarre July 2015 prison escape via a mile-long tunnel system complete with rails and a motorcycle, and subsequent roadside arrest in January 2016 evokes the idiom ‘truth is stranger than fiction’. After being picked up on the side of the road by two unassuming highway patrol officers, El Chapo was escorted to a dingy motel room as the cops awaited reinforcements. Five years on, a theatre work by head of ANU College of Law, Desmond Matterson, and University of Wollongong senior lecturer in law, Luis Gómez Romero, based on what transpired in that motel room will debut at Canberra’s The Street theatre later this month. Twenty Minutes With The Devil imagines the conversation that took place as the unlikely trio awaited the arrival of reinforcements. “Surprising, tense and a little bit funny” is how Canberra actor Jo Richards describes the work. “The audience is going to feel tense; this is a high stakes situation, so you do need that laughter to give everyone a bit of relief,” she said.
Richards plays Angela, one of the highway cops who captures the drug lord, and stars in the production alongside Raoul Craemer and PJ Williams. “You’ve got these police there who are the symbols of authority, but ultimately when you think of authority in Latin America you don’t necessarily think of the police, you definitely think of cartels,” she said. Describing Angela as “morally strict” and “deeply religious”, Richards finds the role to be profoundly engaging. “For me it’s the complexity of having a character who has attached to something that helps them survive,” she said. “There are constantly reasons to not have faith: everyone dies, everything’s corrupt … there’s no reckoning with each other’s humanity, everyone’s treated like objects. “Having faith in all of that is extremely compelling to me.” Being involved in the development process for several years, Richards said she’s been “super fortunate” to have constant access to the work’s creators. She said working directly alongside Matterson and Romero has brought “a whole new depth to the work” as it’s allowed her to
understand what her lines are speaking to and their importance. Working in a tight, historically accurate box set that recreates the motel room, a strong fourth wall is created by stylised prison bars at the front of the stage. “What does it feel like to be in a cage with a lion? because that is essentially what it’s meant to feel like,” Richards said. “It’s small, and it gets smaller throughout the show,” Richards said. “Not because of anything happening, just the mounting tension.” A 90-minute production, it depicts what was 20 minutes’ worth of action in real life. Given that, the pacing, sequencing, and the way tension is built over the course of the performance is of utmost importance. “The work is very intricate, there’s a lot of business,” Richards said. “This is a piece of theatre, it’s something you have to be there for … It’s something that really uses theatricality to honour the story.” Twenty Minutes With The Devil will be performed at The Street Theatre, City West, 2129 August; thestreet.org.au - Denholm Samaras canberraweekly.com.au

That’s arts and entertainment Ghost Bird named 2020 ACT Book of the Year Ghost Bird, a complex and ambitious young adult novel by local author Lisa Fuller, has been named 2020 ACT Book of the Year. The judging panel described Ghost Bird as a “suspenseful and energetic” read that evokes the frustrations and discoveries of teenage years, and the struggles and deep bonds of family and community relationships. “It is graphic and visual while containing
nuance that explores the depths of the challenges faced by Australian society,” they said. Fuller is a Wuilli Wuilli woman from Eidsvold, Queensland, and is also descended from Gooreng Gooreng and Wakka Wakka peoples. She has previously published poetry, blogs and short fiction, and has won numerous awards and fellowships. An already highly decorated work, Ghost Bird has previously won the David Unaipon Award for an Unpublished Indigenous Writer, as well as the Griffith University Young Adult Book Award in the Queensland Literary Awards, amongst others. Two other local authors were highly commended: Nigel Featherstone for his work Bodies of Men, and Tim Bonyhady for The Enchantment of the Long-haired Rat.

Photographic Portrait Prize (NPPP). The stunning photograph depicted a farmer caught in the midst of an unexpected dust storm on his property in Forbes, NSW. Accepting the award over Zoom from Redfern in Sydney, Pratley felt “really overwhelmed” to learn he had won. “I didn’t think I would personally win this,” he said modestly, “however, I really do believe in this image and I’m glad other people do too.” The photo was taken as part of a series to demonstrate the hardships Australian farmers face and to encourage people to support them through donations. “Right place, right time,” Pratley said. For winning he received $30,000 in cash as well as $20,000 worth of photography equipment. From now until 7 November, the 79 NPPP finalists will be on display at the Portrait Gallery. In the 14th year of the Prize, Portrait Gallery director Karen Quinlan said the exhibition is a way to “look back, consider and reflect” upon these challenging times, providing a “rich tableau of

humanity, a reflection of the year that was”. The exhibition is full of portraiture capturing everything from the catastrophe of drought and bushfire to the intimate moments of lockdown. Themes of isolation and solitude permeate the works. “After the harrowing bushfires of the summer of ‘19-20 closely followed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it felt imperative that in 2021 we acknowledged the seismic events of this period,” Ms Quinlan said. “But the bright celebration of identity, both collective and individual, that resonate throughout every year of the NPPP is highly visible throughout this unique collection of works.” The Highly Commended Award went to Julian Kingma for Tom at the Drain. The Distinction Awards were presented to R.J Poole for Great conjunction, and Jessica Hromas for Mark and Saskia cool off. The Art Handlers’ Award went to I’m just a suburban fashionista by Kristina Kraskov. Two local artists chosen for Tasmanian residency For the first time, not one but two ACT artists have been chosen for The Unconformity Artist in Residence Program along the remote West Coast of Tasmania. Out of a field of nearly 250 applicants from across Australia, local visual artists Saskia Haalebos and Lisa Sammut are two of the five recipients heading off to Queenstown. Haalebos, a multidisciplinary artist who grew up in “the wilds of 1980s west Belconnen”, arrives there on Monday. “I went to Queenstown when I was four, and the memories are already starting to surface. For a town that usually relies on its copper mine for work and wealth, the excavation of my past life for the same reason is a point not lost on me,” she said. Sammut who works in sculpture, video, and installation will make the trip in September. “I have travelled to the volcanoes and lava fields of Iceland, Italy, New Zealand and the
Philippines for research; I can now add the ancient geology unearthed in the mining town of Queenstown, Tasmania to this growing list,” she said.
QPRC 2021 Arts Trail cancelled The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) has this week announced the cancellation of their 2021 Arts Trail due to complications surrounding the numerous ongoing NSW COVID-19 lockdowns. “COVID-19 pandemic’s winter escalation to the north and south continues to threaten us with the possibility of snap lockdowns and therefore it is not feasible to plan a region-wide event that may need to be cancelled at short notice,” the Council said in a statement. The QPRC Culture and Arts team say they will endeavour to assist their creative community in other ways and will consider any small-scale cultural opportunities in the near future – COVID-19 situation permitting. - Denholm Samaras

Jeff Popple reviews three new Australian crime novels. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com
In school, nine-year-old Alex tells his classmates that when he grows up, he wants to become Miss France. After a hard 15 years, the now orphaned Alex has dimmed his light, spending his days at a gloomy and run-down boxing gym. After a chance reconnection with an old friend, Alex’s dream sparks back to light, and he calls upon his makeshift family for their help! The cinematography by Renaud Chassaing is beautiful, capturing the rays of light that awaken Alex’s heart in his quest to find himself through competing in the Miss France beauty pageant. Parisian nights on the town see the streetlights burst into lens flares, with beauty found in the most unlikely places. Alex lives in a huge share house filled with an eclectic mix of characters who
all step up to help. Bringing their specialised talents together, Alex’s team comprises social media experts, dressmakers, deportment tutors and even a sports psychologist. Unlike Billy Elliot, where a boy openly navigates the competitive and female dominated world of ballet, Alex competes for Miss France incognito to allow his femininity to blossom. The most challenging obstacles to overcome, however, are the tall-poppy attitudes of those closest to him, and Alex’s own crippling self-doubt. Verdict: A beautiful film with a fantastic performance from lead Alexandre Wetter that unfortunately and frustratingly careens into the well-worn and predictable morality tale formula. 3 stars. The Deep by Kyle Perry Michael Joseph, $32.99
Kyle Perry’s The Bluffs was one of the stand-out Australian crime fiction debuts of 2020. Set in the remote wilderness of Tasmania’s Great Western Tiers, it was a tightly constructed and gripping story. Now with The Deep, Perry shifts the action to the rugged and dangerous coast of south-eastern Tasmania. It opens in dramatic fashion, when a 13-year-old boy staggers out of the ocean, bruised and weirdly tattooed. The long missing son of an infamous local drug family, his reappearance sets in train a violent series of events. An exquisitely plotted and well written story, The Deep confirms Perry’s status as a rising star of Australian crime writing.
The Inheritance by Gabriel Bergmoser Harper Collins, $29.99
Gabriel Bergmoser also burst onto the Australian crime fiction scene in 2020 with the visceral and highly exciting The Hunted. The Inheritance continues the adventures of the enigmatic Maggie, who finds herself caught up in the bloodsoaked search for a hard drive of dangerous information left by her dead, ex-cop father. The Inheritance captures the pedal-to-themetal pace and thrills of Bergmoser’s first book, but adds a more substantial plot and richer characters. The story unfolds quickly, and it swiftly builds to an explosive climax. A ferocious tale about a troubled heroine who makes most of the fictional tough guys look like wimps.
Blood Trail by Tony Park Macmillan, $32.99
Tony Park is Australia’s premier adventure writer, and his African-based novels are always a highlight of the reading year. His latest, Blood Trail, once again tackles the emotional issue of wildlife poaching, but Park gives it an up-to-date feel by exploring how COVID has made it harder for the rangers protecting the animals. The pandemic and its effect on the local population is seamlessly integrated into the plot and, in many ways, is the driving impetus for the action. The story unfolds smoothly and there are some nice twists, engaging characters and plenty of excitement. A good piece of international escapism, especially for those of us who miss overseas travel.

Get a headstart in the veg patch With spring just around the corner, it’s time to prepare for the warm growing season. Germinating and growing veggie seedlings in a protected environment is one way to get a headstart and be eating delicious produce this summer. There are many ways of doing so without too much effort or expense. A sunny room which receives at least half a day’s sunlight is one of

the easiest places to germinate seed. Alternatively, indoor grow lights work well. The cosy temperatures we enjoy indoors help initiate germination. Be aware that young seedlings can be vulnerable to sunburn during the afternoons as the weather warms up. Most summer veg, such as eggplant and capsicum, need an ideal soil temperature of 25°C for reliable germination. If your home isn’t consistently warm, it is worth investing in a water-resistant heat mat, which keeps the mix 10°C above ambient temperature. A good quality soil thermometer is handy for monitoring soil temperature. It’s important to maintain consistent soil moisture for successful germination of your seeds; and avoid draughty areas such as near heater vents. Try placing a piece of glass or clear plastic over the
seedling tray to increase humidity and maintain soil moisture until germination occurs. Alternatively, you can use a miniature propagation house. Turning the tray every couple of days ensures even distribution of sunlight for uniform growth. It is also essential that any seed sown isn’t too old and has been stored in a cool, dry cupboard with a stable temperature. Only decant the seed you intend on using, to avoid contaminating what’s left. Ensure all your seedling trays are clearly labelled with the date, plant type and any other relevant information. It is also worth writing the plant name on the tray with a waterproof marker. Depending on the plant variety, expect germination to occur between 7-14 days. Thin out to the strongest seedlings as they establish - manicure scissors are ideal for this

task. When around 4cm tall (this varies depending on type of plant), transplant your seedlings into a pot with good quality potting mix, or plant them direct where they are to grow into a prepared bed. Water in with a plant tonic such as seaweed extract or homemade comfrey tea. Most summer veg are frost sensitive, so avoid planting out until the frosty weather has passed. For added protection, you may like to erect surrounds of frost cloth, horticulture grade plastic or similar. Once your new veg seedlings are established, apply fortnightly applications of a liquid fertiliser such as homemade compost or worm tea, or a veggie-specific fertiliser from your local garden centre.

Perfectly positioned Palmerston 69 Weddin Circuit This three-level, architect-designed home in Palmerston is the perfect marriage of lifestyle, design and convenience, enjoying “breathtaking views” across the grasslands to Mount Majura. Blackshaw Belconnen principal Matt Sebbens says this is the ideal place for families looking for a home with privacy in a quiet and secure neighbourhood. “Nestled in one of Palmerston’s most highly sought-after streets, surrounded by other high-quality homes, there is space in spades,” he says, “including large underfloor storage areas, covered outdoor work area, and high-quality garage conversion which makes a perfect office space or kids’ playroom with 42

views over the front garden”. “There’s all the mod-cons you could expect from a home of this calibre, including modern, spacious kitchen bursting with high-quality appliances, tilt-and-swivel doubleglazed windows, ducted gas heating and reverse-cycle air conditioning, and gas continuous hot water.” Sebbens says the private and spacious main bedroom suite is a standout feature and a “true getaway”, occupying its own level of the home. “It’s tucked comfortably away at the rear of the home with balcony to soak in the sun and gorgeous elevated views of the Mulanggari and Gungaderra nature reserves, supported by a generous ensuite
and walk-in-robe,” he says. Two of the three remaining three bedrooms have built-in robes, and all are serviced by the sleek main bathroom with spa bath. Outside, you’ll find the covered entertaining space and plenty of yard space for the kids to play. “Perfectly positioned, the home is near local primary schools and a quick drive to the Gungahlin Town Centre,” says Sebbens.

rental property. Hand in hand with the ACT’s low vacancy rates, rental prices are increasing. Canberra remains the most expensive capital city in Australia to rent, with the median weekly rent sitting at $630 for a house and $500 for a unit. ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) CEO Emma Campbell said research published by the Everybody’s Home campaign for Homelessness Week, 1-7 August, found the lack of affordable housing is pushing essential community workers into financial stress. Advocacy groups have also cited lack of affordable housing as a key reason for the ACT’s rise in rates of homelessness. As well, office vacancies in the ACT are at their lowest rate in 12 years, says Property Council of Australia ACT executive director, Adina Cirson. “The Commonwealth employment base and long-term tenancies in Canberra are no doubt helping drive positive demand for office space to prevail against the increasing vacancy trend seen across the country,” Ms Cirson said.
Census to see rise in home ownership: REIA The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has predicted a rise in home ownership in this year’s Census, citing government grants, low interest rates and the rise of single women owning homes.
“Home ownership as recorded by the Census has been sustained at the 70% mark over the years and this has not yet been exceeded,” said REIA president Adrian Kelly, “so it will be interesting to see where the latest stands”. Mr Kelly said mortgage interest rates hit historical lows of 5% and under from 2017 onwards, with the latest Census to be “the lowest interest rate environment in history”. He said dual income homes and the economic contribution of women has been a “major factor” in property markets rising over recent years.

Industrial manslaughter now an offence in the ACT Industrial manslaughter is now an offence in the ACT, and breaches can cost millions of dollars in fines or result in jail time. The ACT Legislative Assembly passed legislation last week to establish industrial manslaughter as an offence under the ACT Work Health and Safety Act. According to Industrial 44
canberraweekly.com.au
Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Mick Gentleman, a breach of the new law can lead to imprisonment of up to 20 years for individuals, and up to $16.5 million in fines for corporations that cause the death of a worker through the continuous breach of work safety obligations. Mr Gentleman said these penalties reflected the extreme
seriousness of the crime. In 2020, 182 Australians were killed at work. Two of these workplace deaths occurred in the ACT. To date in 2021, there have been 60 workplace deaths in Australia. “Everyone has the right to return home safely, and employers have an important role to play in this,” Mr Gentleman said.
“Workplace safety is a right that must be protected at all costs. “These laws will provide more avenues to address poor workplace safety practices and systemic noncompliance.” ACT Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius, said she was pleased to see the ACT take this important step in making industrial manslaughter an offence.

Limited Edition Boutique living Denman Prospect Bamblett Rise Located on one of the finest blocks of land in the upmarket suburb of Denman Prospect, Limited Edition is a boutique development with just seven townhouses and 35 low-rise apartments in each separate section. Nestled amongst the region’s beautiful natural environment, Limited Edition boasts amazing views through to the mountains and parklands, which will never be built out, says POD Projects Group’s Marcus Allesch. The range of floorplans and configurations are unmatched, and, given the location, mean Limited Edition will be the first choice for
a range of buyers – live-in owners, first home buyers and investors. “The homes will include beautiful kitchens and stunning bathrooms featuring luxury, upgraded inclusions as standard,” says Allesch. “Expansive courtyards and oversized balconies are included with most floorplans, with no air conditioner condenser units on balconies.” The beautifully designed residents’ amenities will include an alfresco barbecue area amongst the gardens, a fully equipped gym and 21 visitor carparks on site.
It’s not hard to see why Denman Prospect is the most prestigious of the Molonglo Valley suburbs and Limited Edition sits in the heart of it all, walking distance to the brandnew Evelyn Scott School, the worldclass, $6 million Ridgeline Park and Playground, and Denman Village Shops with a supermarket, café, bar, gym and more. “Everything about this suburb oozes class, from the multi-milliondollar homes dotted throughout the area to the architect-designed playgrounds and shops,” says Allesch. “Denman is the adventure capital
of Canberra. “There are many attractions close by to get your adrenalin pumping including Stromlo Forest Park and Stromlo Leisure Centre plus many cycling, walking, and running trails.”

Former London police detective Jim Worth is the new police chief of Little Big Bear, a small town in the Canadian Rockies, where he has moved with his family to escape his past. The influx of migrant workers because of a new big oil company, headed by the mysterious Mrs Bradshaw, forces Worth to confront the resulting wave of crime that threatens the town. ARTWORK My huge piece of art I got after I had an epic year in 2017, when I lived in Canberra. It was the year that changed my life and I wanted to commemorate it and this piece of art is a reminder of hard work pays off. The artwork is by Katie McKinnon.
SHOE COLLECTION I’m obsessed with shoes, I love them! I have way too many, they make me so happy! I prefer to wear sneakers over any shoes but I do the occasional heel, although I usually last three minutes in them!

Tanya Hennessy Comedian, TV and radio presenter, and author Tanya Hennessy is a comedian, radio announcer, TV presenter, multi-bestselling author and social media sensation with a Facebook following of more than 1 million people. Tanya has appeared on myriad TV shows including I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Hughesy! We Have a Problem, The Project and Drunk History, just to name a few. In 2018 Tanya wrote her first book, Am I Doing This Right? Her second book, Help Self, was released in November 2020. In May 2021, Tanya wrote her debut junior fiction book Drum Roll Please, It’s Stevie Louise, with another ‘Stevie’ book in the works. An ambassador for Priceline Pharmacy, Tanya has teamed up with their cosmetics brand Models Prefer and has released two makeup lines. She has also been named the 2021 Charles Sturt University Young Alumni of the Year. In 2019, Tanya embarked on her first live comedy tour, Low Expectations, selling out 27 venues around the country. Originally from Newcastle, Tanya began her radio career in 2012 and continued to 2019, which included a stint on Canberra’s hit104.7. She has two ACRA awards to her name: Best Entertainment Presenter and Best Documentary.
My makeup line with Models Prefer, The Carb Collection...Again – it’s a huge deal to have one makeup collaboration with a brand and I have somehow managed to wrangle two! This was such a huge learning arc for me, and two years in the making. I loved learning about makeup manufacturing and using my creativity and comedy to create the ultimate inclusive makeup line!
PEN AND PAPER/LAPTOP All I need is a laptop or a pen and paper to write, writing is my favourite thing in the world. I love sitting and writing, I write every day. When I was on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, the thing I missed most was being able to write. I used to write with a stick in the dirt until I was told not to!
CANDLES AND CRYSTALS I’m such a hippy at heart, I love how relaxing candles are and I am all about a crystal in the bra! I have an uncomfortable amount of both! canberraweekly.com.au
