contents From the editor Dear #KenBehrens (and members of the wider Behrens community), Who doesn’t love a good autocorrect or predictive text fail? While the Chief Minister was on telly on Monday thanking ‘Canberrans’ for doing the right thing in lockdown, the subtitles thanked ‘Ken Behrens’. The hero we didn’t know we needed. Thank you too, to the federal and ACT governments for acknowledging the plight of small businesses hit by lockdown. As a local, family-owned business, CW is grateful for government support for those doing it tough financially, many of which have experienced reduced or fluctuating trade in the 18 months since pandemic restrictions first began. For lots of us, these restrictions came on top of the black summer of 2019/20 when bushfires and smoke waves kept customers away. In the latest lockdown, some brick and mortar stores that are not permitted to open and don’t have an online shop have lost 100% of their income, while continuing to incur most of the usual expenses. Attractions are shut, events cancelled, and takeawayonly trade rarely compensates for no in-house diners. Please support local businesses when you can, if you want them to still be here when lockdown ends. Reasons to be grateful this past week include government and community support, front-line workers keeping things going, morning birdsong, winter sunshine and Ken & Co.

ACT in lockdown as Covid returns to Canberra There was a sense of inevitability when it was announced at 12.15pm last Thursday 12 August that the ACT would go into a “strict lockdown” after the Territory’s first positive COVID-19 case in over a year was detected. It came after virus fragments showed up in the wastewater the night prior, with the “index” case of the outbreak being detected that morning, a Gungahlin man in his 20s. The ACT had been Covid-free since July 2020 barring several returning diplomats, despite outbreaks in neighbouring NSW and other jurisdictions. As the lockdown was being announced by Chief Minister Andrew Barr at ACT Health’s Phillip office, a sense of uncertainty permeated across town. That afternoon, testing queues outside the Weston Creek Community Health Centre stretched past Cooleman Court toward the McDonalds; the queue of cars for the EPIC drive-through testing site snaked down Northbourne Avenue; and panic buying occurred in supermarkets across Canberra. While grocery store queues have settled, waiting times for testing remain lengthy despite

8

canberraweekly.com.au

ACT Health dramatically scaling up: opening new facilities, extending hours, and redeploying staff to accommodate the surge in demand. The advice now is to only get tested if you are a confirmed close contact. Roughly 25,000 tests had been conducted between 13 and 17 August. On 16 August, the ACT’s lockdown was extended a fortnight until 2 September, with case numbers, exposure sites and close contacts all expected to expand substantially. According to ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman, there was a window of “four to six days” when infectious cases were in the community before being detected. Case numbers are therefore expected to fluctuate for the next two weeks as we “continue to see fallout from those exposures”. With no control over pre-lockdown exposures, Dr Coleman’s focus will be on detecting any post-lockdown exposure sites. With all non-essential businesses closed, a range of financial supports for businesses and individuals are being provided.

The ACT COVID-19 Business Support Grant will deliver grants of up to $10,000 for employing businesses and $4,000 for non-employing businesses. A COVID-19 Small Business Hardship Scheme will allow eligible ACT businesses to apply for credits on the cost of eligible fees and charges. Payments of up to $750 a week will also be available for individuals who have lost work as a result of the lockdown from 20 August. Canberra Business Chamber CEO Graham Catt told Canberra Weekly his main concern is how quickly the supports can get to local businesses. “Cash is critical for small business and how quickly that cash can flow to the bottom line will be the big question for many,” he said. “But we really do fear that if this does become a protracted lockdown or there is a return to restrictions longer term, this could prove to be the final straw.” For extensive, daily coverage of the ACT’s COVID-19 outbreak, visit canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

political capital

Climate, not Covid, is our nemesis As the awfulness of the latest Covid lockdown seeps into our consciousness, it may be of little comfort to realise that the pandemic is not the biggest problem facing us at the moment. Not by a long shot. With Covid gripping our attention like a vice in recent months, it’s easy to understand why the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has been pushed to the background. But what that report says is that humanity faces a far greater risk from rising global temperatures than any other issue. The report confirms that temperatures have already risen by more than 1°C above 1850-1900 temperatures, and are on track to rise by 1.5°C by 2040. This doesn’t sound like much – gee, that’s just a slightly hotter than usual summer, isn’t it? – but it translates into

massive disruption to global weather systems. The IPCC says changes in the earth’s climate in every region and across the whole climate system can now be observed. The out-of-control fires in Greece and California, the floods in China and Europe, and the heatwaves in the USA and Canada are signs of an environment which is unstable and growing more so year by year. And those problems will only grow more frequent and severe as the rate of warming accelerates. Not everyone accepts that global warming is a man-made phenomenon. Some, like the Danish environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg, say that the world is warming naturally and will, in due course, cool naturally, such is the pattern of previous climate change. I hope, with all my heart, that

10

canberraweekly.com.au

Lomborg is right, and that the world’s dithering on this question will not cost vital opportunities to put things right. But my head says otherwise. My head says: follow the science. The IPCC report is the sixth report since 1990 to sound these warnings. It is a work of 243 scientists, with another 517 contributing, citing 14,000 references. It represents the distilled wisdom of those working in the field, not the unanimous view but the overwhelming majority view. If you were suffering from a serious illness, and 9 out of 10 specialists prescribed Drug A to cure you, would you even consider taking Drug B, prescribed by the 10th specialist? Of course, you wouldn’t. That is the weight of the evidence in favour of urgent action on climate change. To adopt the outlier view and do nothing is simply irresponsible.

WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR

We are told that the big question facing Australia in this context is whether to adopt a zero-netemissions-by-2050 target. I’m not sure I agree. If we take the warnings in the IPCC report seriously, reducing emissions to zero by 2050 will be far too little, too late. The report finds that unless there are immediate, rapid and largescale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to 1.5°C or even 2°C will be a pipe dream. In other words, targets set for 30 years from now are largely meaningless. Any action must be now. Sapphire of Eden advertising moment

The Sapphire of Eden to offer sparkling resort-like lifestyle Set in the beautiful NSW Far South Coast town of Eden with views across the sparkling, jewel-like sea, interest in The Sapphire of Eden is strong with over 168 registrations of interest from buyers in the planned $100 million development. The Sapphire of Eden will be a residential and hotel development featuring exclusive apartments with penthouse suites and a range of one, two and three bedrooms plus study for sale from $618,000. The resort-like lifestyle will feature a heated pool, gym and barbecue areas in a fully secured precinct, with completion of the project due in late 2022. The development, expected to re-shape and revitalise Eden as a major regional centre in NSW, will be undertaken at the Fisherman’s Club site on Chandos and Imlay

Streets, Eden. This will bring millions of dollars into the Eden economy. Core Asset Development Pty Ltd (CAD) has appointed Century 21 Projects Australasia as lead agents for the project and has a sales office located in Eden. They are available to answer any queries over the phone or online appointments to help clients reserve their slice of Eden. Managing director of CAD, Mark Toma, said “We are delighted with the very strong, early interest among apartments buyers, and over 15 per cent of the project was sold on release in the fi rst week with strong continuing volumes. The majority of buyers are from the Sapphire Coast and looking for a luxury residence to downsize or invest in.

“The excellent sales response comes as NSW’s South Coast is benefitting from significant government infrastructure and a surge in tourism,” he said. CAD has also appointed international operator, Radisson Hotels under its specialist brand Radisson Individuals, to manage the five-star 78-room luxury hotel and function centre to be built on site. This prestige venue will be called Sapphire of Eden Hotel – An Individuals By Radisson. The hotel and apartments will provide a superb lifestyle option and have been designed by noted architects, Altis Architecture and its principal Andrew O’Connell, taking in the 360-degree vistas over the sparkling seas to the mountains in the west.

More information can be found at www.cadpl.com.au and registrations of interest in the apartments can be made at www.thesapphireofeden.com.au or by calling 0432 236 340.

news Cake Off auction helps new parents weather stressful times The sudden snap lockdown didn’t deter Canberra bakers; they donned their aprons, warmed their ovens, and filled their icing nozzles, and created some splendidly imaginative cakes – all for a good cause. The annual Cake Off was a fundraiser for the Perinatal Wellbeing Centre (PWC), which

provides care and support for parents from pregnancy until the baby turns two, especially if parents experience mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or struggling with parenthood. That help has never been more needed; CEO Dr Yvonne Luxford said there has been a 152% increase in ongoing clients since the last Cake Off, in March 2019 (2020’s event was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions). Last year, after lockdown, bushfires, toxic smoke, and the hailstorm, counselling calls increased 57%. “The number of parents [calling] went up around March and keeps going up; we’re not seeing any decrease.” This year’s theme was Decades of Cake, and Canberrans responded with wit and imagination. There were elegant 1960s ballet dresses

and delectable Mary Poppins carousels, edible Dali landscapes (the master of Spanish surrealism would have been delighted), and countercultural confectionery: flower power, radical love, and disco. The event was meant to be held at the Hyatt Hotel on Sunday 15 August, but for obvious reasons moved to an online auction instead. Normally, around 50 bakers take part, but only half that number could make it this year; some were essential workers, others couldn’t leave their homes to buy ingredients or decorations – but they’re keen to be back next year. Nevertheless, Cake Off raised nearly $8,000 – almost $5,000 in cake sales and around $3,000 in donations. Local businesses sponsored the cakes, then donated them back to the PWC to raise more money in auctions. “A very big thank you to the

community for supporting Cake Off,” Dr Luxford said. “There were so many gorgeous cakes, and some very generous donations. Canberrans are quite wonderful people; they really get behind a cause and they care about their neighbours.” One cake has been donated to staff at the local IGA; others will be given to local respite facilities, or have been bought by essential workers. But the PWC still needs money. Although the ACT Government supports the organisation – and two MLAs entered cakes – support hasn’t increased at the same rate as demand, Dr Luxford said. Donations are still open on the website, and a raffle (hampers full of items donated by local businesses) is open until the end of lockdown. At a glance Local sport on hold The lockdown extension has put local sport on hold for at least another two weeks, effectively ruling out the rest of the regular season for senior competition and finals for juniors. AFL Canberra released a statement declaring it’s their “main intention to ensure we can finish off all seasons, being juniors, community and seniors.” Canberra’s sporting bodies will provide further updates as they come to hand.

Raiders fall to Storm A Bailey Simonsson hat-trick wasn’t enough for the Canberra Raiders to upset the Melbourne Storm as they fell 26-16 on the Sunshine Coast on Thursday night, 12 August. Canberra was right in the contest until the dying minutes when Corey HarawiraNaera was sent off for a high shot

on Jahrome Hughes, gifting the Storm a penalty goal and the win. Harawira-Naera copped a threematch suspension for the hit and will miss the Raiders clash with Manly at Suncorp Stadium on Friday 20 August 6pm.

Giants firm for finals The GWS Giants have taken a massive step towards locking in an AFL finals berth with a 39-point win over the Tigers. The Giants now just need to win their final round match against Carlton on Saturday night to set up a likely elimination final against their Sydney rivals, the Swans.

Meet Susie Todd: Canberra’s own YouTube star

fashion, beauty and fitness content, but it was her videos surrounding body positivity and midsize representation that made waves on the platform. In August 2019, the Chloe Ting fitness challenge was well on its way to amassing over 387 million views. Response videos popped up all over YouTube, as women swarmed to “prove” the challenge’s purported benefits of giving anybody visible abs in two weeks. Susie, who had been posting on YouTube as a hobby after studying film at CIT, watched the array of Chloe Ting response videos in utter disbelief, as each of the women appeared to be doing the strenuous workouts with ease, grace and a fully done face. “Perfect hair in sleek ponytails, they were never even breaking a

sweat,” she said. “I thought, ‘This isn’t realistic for someone who’s still trying to get fit. I need to show people that it is hard to do these challenges, so they don’t feel bad when they try it themselves. “Back then I didn’t work out at all ... I figured I would put something out there where I was trying and failing and keeping on going, regardless of not being in shape, and maybe people would relate, and realise that if I could do it, they could too. “When people saw me struggling, it made them feel better,” she smiled. “I put a lot of effort into filming, and it just makes me smile when I look back. That was the start of my fitness journey. Through YouTube, I fell in love with it.” Susie now inspires thousands to follow along on their own fitness journeys, working out with her every day and still trying viral fitness challenges for fun. Her warm commentary with a touch of self-deprecating humour, all while never taking claims of fitness trends too seriously, has steadily attracted an international following. Despite living in Canberra all her life, the mass of Susie’s fame exists on other shores. “The largest portion of my fanbase is in the US, about 27%, then the UK is my second biggest, India’s my third, and right here in Australia is my fourth.” “It’s just crazy. I get messages saying, ‘love from India,’ ‘love from South Africa,’ ‘love from the USA.’ Here in Canberra though, my life is hardly different since before I started YouTube. I still have all the same friends from school, I still live at home with my mum. There’s no online persona. Just me, in my room, filming my life.” Susie said the YouTube

algorithm sends her to far more American screens, where her largely body positivity-centred content is more in demand. “One of the reasons I started focusing on midsize representation was because I wasn’t seeing any here.” The midsize movement, referring to representation in the media of women sized 1216, has only recently become mainstream. Susie, a midsize beauty symbol, is one of the first to gain a sizable following in Australia, despite the national average women’s dress size being size 14. “I don’t understand why it took so long for media to promote the average woman. Clothing brands are completely within their power to show that you can wear these clothes and look good in a midsize body, or any body. “Wouldn’t it be great if the body positivity movement, wasn’t a movement, and just the norm?,” she said. “Like most girls, I struggled with hating my body in the past. Now I just want to help girls feel beautiful in their own skin, stretch marks, cellulite, and rolls included, because I never had that growing up.” Susie, who ends every video welcoming new viewers into a “family of all shapes and sizes,” said if there’s one message she’d like to give to young girls growing up surrounded by the beauty standards of Instagram, it’s to not spend hours comparing themselves to the “perfect” bodies online, and instead follow girls who look like them. “Why not go and follow people who are showing their real bodies, without the edit? “You can feel good about yourself and admire others online.” - Anja de Rozario

ClubDraws advertising moment

A simple way to support Canberra Pet Rescue and you could win $2000

Funds raised through the weekly online raffle help Canberra Pet Rescue to save stray, abandoned, neglected and surrendered pets in need, to provide them with vital care and treatment before finding them loving homes.

On behalf of numerous animal charities, including Canberra Pet Rescue, ClubDraws run a weekly raffle online giving subscribers the chance to win $2,000 prize money. It costs from $2 a week to subscribe. At a time when selling raffle tickets face-to-face is either not permitted or challenging, ClubDraws makes it easy for charities to raise much-needed funds. Canberra Pet Rescue signed up to the raffle in March this year. President of the local charity, Amanda Doelle, says “an incredible $2,000 prize is on offer to one lucky winner every single week with at least 50% of the proceeds raised going directly to support our vital work in the

community”. The other 50% goes towards the prize and marketing. “This enables us to save more pets in need, especially during these times where our traditional fundraising activities are not possible,” Ms Doelle says. “The raffle enables us to have vital funds without any risk or all of our effort being spent on fundraising activities, enabling us to put our volunteer resources into our animals in our care, many of whom require a great deal of care and attention.” A registered charity that rescues, raises, rehabilitates and rehomes pets in need, Canberra Pet Rescue saves stray, abandoned or neglected pets in need, provides them vet work and then fi nds them

loving homes. They also help community members experiencing fi nancial crisis with free pet food and items through their PetAssist program. “The proceeds raised from the raffle go directly to helping the animals in our care. We rely solely on donations so couldn’t provide our vital service without generous donors and raffle participants,” Ms Doelle says. Canberra Pet Rescue would like to see hundreds more supporters sign up to the weekly raffle to help them save and rehome more animals – plus, be in the running to win $2,000 each week. time out

Now showing Don’t Let Go (MA15+)

Homicide detective Jack Radcliff (David Oyelowo) receives a call from his niece Ashley (Storm Reid) as her ne’er-do-well father, and Jack’s brother, Garret (Brian Tyree Henry) has forgotten to pick her up. Soon after giving his brother a stern talking to, the entire family is killed. The distraught Jack is then amazed to receive a call from Ashley! Time manipulation movies are now a subgenre in sci-fi, starting with 2000’s excellent Frequency. Using a source of technology, a person from the present can communicate with someone in the past to alter said present, usually within the trappings of a murder-mystery framework. Foregoing action, the movie is wrapped in the film-noir genre. The locations are industrial, the colour desaturated, and a sense

of gloom lingers throughout. The loving relationship between Jack and Ashley serves as the only real light. It is then easy to understand Jack’s grief and drive to rescue her through this fortunate time abnormality, and his choice to not even question it. With the appearance of a name actor, and an unfortunate script hiccup, it may be quite easy to pick the ‘who-dunnit’ prematurely. However, David and Storm’s performances ground the sci-fi drama and sweep you up into the tense mystery. Verdict: While taking a bit too long to kick off the sci-fi angle to the point that the movie feels as if it is jumping genres, Don’t Let Go is an enticing family drama. 3 stars. Don’t Let Go is streaming on Netflix. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk This week, Jeff Popple reviews three fascinating new history books. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Orchard Murders by Robert Gott Scribe, $29.9

Robert Gott’s The Orchard Murders is set in Melbourne during the dark days of World War II. In the outer suburb of Nunawading, a triple murder signals the return of a longforgotten cult headed up by a messianic leader. Inspector Lambert of the Melbourne Homicide Unit fears that the murders are just the beginning, and sets out to stop the cult, and its leader, before more deaths occur. As with Gott’s earlier novels, The Orchard Murders bristles with interesting detail and a convincing wartime backdrop. Recommended.

Thursdays At Orange Blossom House by Sophie Green Hachette, $32.99

Sophie Green has established herself as a leading writer of warmhearted tales about female friendship and second chances. In her latest novel, Thursdays At Orange Blossom House, she shifts her focus from outback and suburban Australia to Far North Queensland in 1993. Three very different women gather each Thursday at the lushly located Orange Blossom House to learn yoga and find peace. Together they overcome their varied backgrounds and embark on a journey of discovery and reconnection. An enjoyable and moving tale about life, family, and the chances taken and missed.

The Long Game by Simon Rowell Text, $32.99

REGISTER NOW ARE YOUR KIDS INSPIRED BY THE OLYMPIANS? MAYBE THEY COULD WEAR THE GREEN AND GOLD IN 2032!

Simon Rowell’s second novel, The Long Game, is an assured and enjoyable police mystery with an engaging central character. After a traumatic incident, Detective Zoe Meyer returns to duty to find herself in charge of the investigation into the stabbing of a surfer near Portsea Beach. An obvious suspect is soon identified and arrested, but Zoe has her doubts and sets out to find who the real killer is. This is a very entertaining crime novel that is elevated above much of the competition by its easy flowing style, nicely limned characters, vivid descriptions and strong sense of credibility. A terrific read.

A new “Hollywood grade” state-of-the-art sound stage and virtual production studio primarily funded by not-for-profit video games and film educator, Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE), is set to be operational in Canberra early next year. The virtual production sound stage will measure 24 metres in diameter, 6 metres high and will comprise a “giant curved green screen” described by AIE chairman and CEO John De Margheriti as “what you’ll see in a rock n’ roll concert”. The facility will allow filmmakers to create “any backdrop imaginable” via the Unreal game engine. “This will bring pretty much state-of-the-art technology to Canberra for film and video games,” Mr De Margheriti said. The $10 million project will receive $839,400 funding from the ACT Government. Screen Canberra CEO Monica Penders said the infrastructure will allow the ACT to be nationally competitive with “much needed studio space”. “It’s a simple equation;, the package of studio

space and a location incentive means we are now competitive in the Australian screen landscape,” Ms Penders said. The sound stage and studio will be housed at an interim location until December 2024, at which point the necessary renovations will have been made at AIE’s Watson site to accommodate the infrastructure. The temporary site will be announced later this year, with Mr De Margheriti hyping the location will be “front page news” when made public. “It will be political, it will be front page news in Canberra, people will be shocked,” he said. “Even the Chief Minister doesn’t know!” Describing it as “one piece of the puzzle”, this infrastructure is an early component of a grand vision to establish a “$200 million” AIE campus in Canberra; outlined in the AIE’s Draft Campus Master Plan. By 2040, the plan is to have multiple sound stages and water tanks on a bustling, modern university campus at their Watson site. In August 2020, AIE and the ACT Government

reached agreement on the terms of a direct sale of part of the Watson Canberra Technology Park site. Widely renowned as a pioneer of the Australian video game industry, Mr De Margheriti said he established the community-focused AIE to create a legacy and give back to his hometown, Canberra. “I was a Hawker College student with dreams who found it hard,” he said. “I don’t make any profit from it; I’ve already made my money.” Read an extended version at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

Gold Creek Homestead signed on for next chapter community on how they wanted the site to be treated resulted in five guidelines for potential owners of the homestead to abide by: pay homage to the site’s past; create a caring, inclusive, and safe place; retain the visual character of the place; be sustainable; and involve the community in the ongoing development. “Lendlease’s concept best captured the place and community values of the historic site. It will ensure Gold Creek Homestead’s preservation in the future and is the exciting start into the next chapter of its history,” ACT Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry said. The homestead dates back to 1860 and has passed through a number of hands since then. However, it has always been central to the community around it, from acting as a venue to hold functions and fundraisers in the 1960s, to being used by farmers for grazing sheep and cattle until 1983, and even attracting the interest of teenagers in recent years as they explored it in its vacant state.

Now potential tenants will be explored through the ongoing community engagement process. The Homestead historic precinct will be connected to nearby residents through a public walking and cycling path. Arabella Rohde, senior development manager at Lendlease Retirement Living said, “Our intention is to retain, restore and activate the original Gold Creek Homestead and ensure the design of the precinct respects its rich heritage.” - Anja de Rozario

The historic Gold Creek Homestead in Gungahlin has been signed into new hands, after remaining vacant for years. After much negotiation with the community, the 140-year-old northside precinct located off Gungahlin Drive has been entrusted to Lendlease to enact their plans for future redevelopment, including a residential aged care facility and 45 independent living units. Strongly advocated for by the surrounding neighbourhood, the original Gold Creek Homestead, stone hut kitchen and slab hut will be conserved and restored. The surrounding gardens will also be conserved and opened to the community. Lendlease were announced as the preferred tenderer of the site in March 2021, following the homestead’s’ previous owners attempting to put it on the market in 2018, but ultimately deciding to facilitate community engagement to determine the next steps for the historic site.
