contents 14 Flowers still bloom, the birds still sing, the sun still rises, and the clouds pass. For those of us in the ACT and surrounds, life in lockdown continues. So, I’m following nature’s lead and simply taking each new day as it comes, enjoying time in the fresh air (albeit through a face mask), eating nourishing food, and connecting with loved ones in permissible ways. Canberra’s annual spring festivals, Floriade and Nightfest, have been cancelled and the ACT Government is urging people to abide by lockdown restrictions. Please read our cover story on page 14 to find out how you can safely enjoy the displays of spring bulbs and annuals blooming across the ACT in coming weeks. A little colour and beauty will surely help brighten our days. In this week’s edition, we share great, down-to-earth tips and advice to help us cope in lockdown from local nutritionist Georgia Houston in Taste (pages 20-21), and from our wellbeing writer, Wesley Smith (page 29). We hope you find their pearls of wisdom helpful. Reasons to be grateful this past week include acknowledging decades of my dad’s love and guidance on Father’s Day, all the great dads and father figures in our community, capricious spring weather, uplifting walks in nature, apple kombucha, rye sourdough, and a quick weekend shop at the local farmer’s market. Take care,

Non-essential businesses facing long wait to reopen last because we’re probably the least ‘essential’,” she told Canberra Weekly. And for Ms Wright, that suits her fine, given many clients have pushed their bookings for weddings and other events back to April 2022. She is keen to reopen later in the summer once the vaccination targets have been met so her business can operate under minimal restrictions. “If you rush to open up with all these annoying rules it ruins the vibe.

Some local businesses yet to reopen are facing a long wait before they can once again welcome customers back through their doors. Owner of Braddon blow dry bar, Saloon, Sarah Wright doesn’t anticipate restarting their hair and beauty services any time soon. The salon is only open with two staff for two hours a day two days a week in a retail capacity for click-and-collect. “I feel like we’re going to be

Owner of Saloon, Sarah Wright (left) with salon manager Blaise Judd. Under current restrictions, the Braddon blow dry bar is open two hours a day, two days a week for click-and-collect retail sales only.

“Blow drying someone’s hair with a mask on, trying to talk to them through a mirror is just the worst thing in the world,” she smiled. “You don’t realise how much you lip read.” While they’ll most likely reopen at a time when events are still few and far between, Ms Wright expects they’ll be busy from day one. “Canberra people love supporting local,” she said. “Last time we reopened a lot of things were cancelled, but they made their event coming to get their hair done and have a glass of wine in the salon.” Comparing this lockdown to the initial wave of restrictions from March 2020, Ms Wright praised the original JobKeeper wage supplement that kept her employees attached to the business. When owner of KX Pilates Braddon, Shane Brady, heard the lockdown was called on 12 August, the studio held its last classes that afternoon before shutting the doors. One month later, they’re still in limbo. Like Saloon, Ms Brady expects

her Pilates studio to be one of the last business categories to reopen. “That’s the most challenging aspect of these kinds of lockdowns, you just can’t plan around it because we don’t know how long it’s going to be,” she said. Last time, Ms Brady was able to rent out her equipment to clients while the studio was shut down. But this lockdown, she isn’t even permitted to access her studio and is limited in her ability to conduct routine equipment maintenance. “I’m hamstrung from two different aspects … I didn’t have that last time,” she said. “It’s definitely a toll on what you can do to be creative.” Ms Brady is calling on the ACT Government to develop a structured strategy on coming back to work so businesses like hers and their staff have some loose dates they can plan around. “My staff are mostly casual, so it’s a very challenging space when people start to feel threatened by the fact they don’t have the capacity to earn their income anymore,” she said. - Denholm Samaras

Southside residents want Sulwood bike path on the north side The ACT Government say their proposed new bicycle path along Sulwood Drive in Kambah will make active travel easier for Southside dwellers – but some neighbours aren’t happy with its location. Chris Steel, Minister for Transport and City Services, said Sulwood Drive had no formal offor on-road cyclist or pedestrian facilities. “We are proposing to address this missing link,” he said. The new 4km, 3-metre-wide shared path (with safety barriers) will be built between Drakeford Drive and Athllon Drive, linking Sulwood Drive to the ACT’s shared path network. Ian Ross, CEO of Pedal Power 6

canberraweekly.com.au

ACT, said the new path would be “a genuine boon to active travel” for people in Kambah and Weston Creek. “The road is currently twisty and narrow, many sections have little or no shoulder, and vehicles travel at up to 80kph,” he said. However, Kambah residents David and Jan Raff believe the northern side of the road – already used by pedestrians and cyclists – would be more suitable. It is flatter, free from infrastructure, and would not involve major construction or removal of the berm that protects residents of Humble Court from noise. The Raffs live directly below that

berm and fear the bike path would adversely affect them and their neighbours. Moreover, putting the bike path on the south side of Sulwood Drive would increase the risk of crashes, and cyclists would have to dismount at three streets, reducing the flow of the ride. They also worry that mature trees will be cut down along the berm. An ACT Government spokesperson said they had ruled out a path on the northern side of Sulwood Drive, as it would conflict with the Mount Taylor car park and nature reserve. They also ruled out other options on the southern side due to water utilities. The Raffs also claim the

community was not adequately consulted. The ACT Government talked to residents in June and asked the public for feedback through YourSay on the planned bike path. However, the Raffs say: “Consultation that starts with a government plan and asks for comment is the wrong way around … Community input ought to come first.” The ACT Government said the consultation report would be ready after lockdown; they will reply to respondents then. - Nick Fuller Read an extended version online at canberraweekly.com.au

Demand on food delivery drivers surges

With Canberrans either forced or urged to stay at home during lockdown, the demand for home delivery is surging. Fortunately, drivers like Nabin Adhikari come to the rescue by delivering food, groceries, medicine and more. of deliveries coming in. “There’s definitely some extra orders coming through given a lot of people are in isolation,” he said. Accepting around 18 to 27 orders a day, he predominantly delivers to Woden-Weston Creek and surrounding areas. Having worked as a delivery driver for around three years, Nabin has delivered in Canberra for the past 18 months. He said the community spirit has been noticeable across town during lockdown, with many Canberrans polite and pleasant, happy to receive his deliveries. “Canberra residents have been really good to deliver to, and what I’ve heard from other drivers is they have all found them to be really great,” he said. DoorDash reported an “over 20 per cent” increase in demand locally since the current ACT lockdown began on 12 August. While enjoying his work, Nabin and the Transport Workers Union are critical of the automated payment system used by Menulog and DoorDash, decrying a lack of clarity in both their delivery offers and itemised payment breakdowns. An Uber Eats spokesperson said the wellbeing of their drivers and customers is paramount to them. “We have a dedicated team working around the clock to support them the very best we can. “Among other initiatives, contactless delivery is available Australia-wide on the Uber Eats platform, and every trip is GPS tracked which enables us to work closely with public health agencies in each state to support contact tracing,” they said. Facebook post offering to cook and deliver meals to anyone who needs them in lockdown. For the past few weeks, Garry has been delivering free meals to people across Canberra and said the demand for his service has grown dramatically over that time. “I started with just myself and my extended family but now we have quite a few volunteers helping us; we’ve got 18-20 people delivering the food and about 10 people in the kitchen and we always need more help,” Garry said. “We are also asking for food donations right now as we aren’t a registered charity so cannot take cash donations, but are in contact with the local Rotary Club who may be able to take donations in on behalf of us.” Since that first Facebook post,

Garry has been working every day without a day off, and said he’ll keep going as long as people need him. “I’m working 18 hours a day, every day, and to be honest, I’m a bit tired now,” Garry said. There’s been a demand for vegan hot meals, so he has started adding a third item to his daily menu and has been seeing requests for baby food and puree for toddlers, so has also been accommodating the needs of these struggling parents. “What I’ve learned during this lockdown is that it’s not just during Covid that people need support, there are still a lot of Canberrans after the pandemic that will still need assistance, so we are going to start a district charity at our current location and make it possible for homeless people to

Mental health AI wins $4k Sustainable House Day Dua’a Ahmad has won University of Canberra’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) contest, receiving $4000 in funding towards her remarkable research into the potential of AI to aid in diagnosing depression. “I prepared video footage of 120 participants, each labelled by a psychologist with a severity of depression. Using an algorithm in AI, I trained a model to learn symptoms of depression. The model learns by breaking down video frames into smaller sections, such as areas of the mouth and eyes. It then learns characteristics within these areas, links it back to the face, and finally, its depression severity,” Ms Ahmad said. By simply observing faces, the AI is able to predict severities of depression with 67% accuracy. “If I can find a method that makes the diagnosing process

easier on people, a tool that can be used during your regular check-ups, that is non-invasive and can be used remotely so the person won’t even feel that it’s happening, maybe one day it can be used on a daily basis by doctors to check patients’ wellbeing, just like getting your blood pressure checked.” Ms Ahmad said her technology is not designed to replace psychologists and GPs, but rather assist them. “This is not a standalone measure. It still needs that human element of the doctor confirming the diagnosis.” Aided by future collaborations with others in the field that the funding can support, she said technology like this could be used in day-to-day life in as soon as five years. - Anja de Rozario

moves online for 2021

Unique and inspiring sustainable homes are popping up across Australia as the drive for more ecofriendly buildings to help reduce carbon emissions is becoming more mainstream. The Sustainable House Day organisation said that by creating healthier and more comfortable homes, the extra benefits include residents saving money on their bills. The products, technologies and knowledge required to make homes greener already exists, they just need to be more mainstream. The pandemic turned last year’s Sustainable House Day into a month-long virtual program which will again be running online this year. Significant expansions include in-depth webinars hosted by experts and homeowners, interactive house

tours, live-streamed panels with homeowners, and some in-person events (lockdowns permitting). Jenny Edwards, member of Sustainable House Day and director of Canberra-based sustainable building business, Light House Architecture & Science, is encouraging people to participate in the event and take advantage of it being more accessible online. This year’s program begins on Wednesday 15 September with an online event hosted by a Ballarat East couple who have made their own sustainable, off-grid strawbale dream home. The month-long program ends on Sunday 17 October, on Sustainable House Day, with a free online session with homeowners and in-person events across the country.

How to enjoy spring in Canberra safely in lockdown The killjoy that is COVID-19 has yet again ruined the usual month-long celebration of spring that blooms in Commonwealth Park during September and October most years. As in 2020, the pandemic has

once again forced the cancellation of the annual Floriade and Nightfest festivals, and the ACT Government is discouraging any large-scale gatherings during the current outbreak.

The flowerbeds planted in Commonwealth Park in autumn are now blooming, but the ACT Government is discouraging large-scale gatherings, and access to the park will depend on carefully managed public health directions.

76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax 14

canberraweekly.com.au

Nevertheless, Canberrans are innovative by nature and Floriade will live on to celebrate its 34th year - just not in the usual fashion but COVID-safe. Floriade: Reimagined was launched last year and included a new highlight of the festival – Floriade Community, which saw a colourful tulip trail planted by over 80 community groups across Canberra’s suburbs. The overwhelmingly positive response saw the community plantings of bulbs and annuals return this year, and it’s likely they will become a regular feature on Canberra’s spring calendar, regardless of a pandemic. This year, 300,000 bulbs and annuals have already been planted by over 100 community groups, schools, and organisations for local residents to admire during lockdown. In addition, pockets of spring flowers usually destined for Commonwealth Park are being scattered across the community in over 400 planter boxes and pots. An ACT Government spokesperson said although there will be bulbs in bloom in Commonwealth Park throughout spring, the government is discouraging large-scale gatherings at this time and access to the park will depend

on the carefully managed public health directions of the time. Events ACT and the ACT Chief Health Officer will be working together to determine the safe level of access to the site that may be available to the public later in spring, based on the public health directions. ‘Floriade in the Suburbs’ can be found at local town centres, hospitals, testing and vaccination sites, and Canberra’s national attractions. People are permitted to visit the flower plantings that are within their local community, only while following all ACT Health directions. At this point (9 September) that includes mandatory mask wearing, groups of five people maximum, staying within the allotted two hours of outdoor exercise or recreation, and maintaining social distancing. Later in the month there will be virtual tours, podcasts and images of the blooms available on the Floriade website so people can still appreciate the beauty of the event, albeit via a screen. You can check out the interactive map at floriadeaustralia.com/ community-map to find any of the plantings in your area to visit. - Abbey Halter

Family calls Rivett ex-govie home for over 50 years In September 1971, the Dodds Family first arrived in Canberra from Perth, dressed in hats and scarves for the snowy weather of the tales they had heard. Neville, an Army man, was

Neville and Mary Dodds have called their Rivett property home since September 1971. They raised their family in the ex-govie (front) and their family built the modern home (left) in the backyard so the couple could age in place. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

“We thought we’d be walking out the door into knee-deep snow,” their daughter Robyn smiled. She was seven years old during the move. “We were terribly disappointed, especially since we were missing all our cousins back in Perth. Here we didn’t have anybody.” Nevertheless, the family were quickly welcomed by the Canberra community. After following Neville to postings in NSW, SA, and Malaysia, his five daughters and one son soon realised that this government house in Rivett would be the backdrop to their youth. Years earlier, their parents were fated to meet. While Neville was on leave from the military, he stopped by a cinema where Mary was working. Two years later, they were married. Their home was a similar twist of fate. After the Rivett house was allocated to them by the Army, Neville and Mary soon purchased it for their own, becoming their forever home. The children spent most of their childhood outdoors exploring the massive lot. “We were always up in the pine forest, or the horse paddock, or investigating the other houses being built, and wouldn’t come back until the lights came on,” said Robyn. “Our house is now part of a cul-de-sac, but it was one of the first to be built. All the other houses slowly grew up as we did.” Over the decades, nearby Cotter Road developed from a dirt track, the local school became an aged care home, and duplexes sprang up where the neighbours’ homes once stood. Mary and Neville reached retirement, and their children were determined to keep them

nearby and built a new house on their former backyard cricket pitch. “The old house, being a govie, was off the ground with steps in the front and back. The new house was built flat, with extrawide doorways and in-floor heating, just so we knew we could keep them here as long as possible,” said Robyn. The siblings have taken it in turns living in the old house to support Neville and Mary as they age. Currently, Robyn and her daughter reside there, while the rest of the family is scattered along the East Coast. The Dodds have always taken advantage of the never-ending stream of birthdays, weddings, christenings, and Christmases to gather once a year at the Rivett home. Between the two houses is a large double carport, affectionately named ‘The Pavilion’. “That’s where all the parties are held. There’s always at least one barbecue, if not two going, the tables absolutely covered in food. Mum’s a fantastic cook and most of her granddaughters took after her. Music, laughter, the 13 great-grandchildren running around on the grass,” Robyn said. The youngest Dodds is two months old, while the oldest, Neville, is now 90 years old. The Dodds hope that the Rivett house will still be in the family in 50 years’ time, but with today’s property prices, no one can be sure. “For the moment, we’re just enjoying what we have as much as we can.” - Anja de Rozario If you have an interesting story to share about your family home in the Canberra region, please send an email to news@canberraweekly.com.au

Local healthcare focus: New doctors & midwife for Casey

It can be a rough ride without Smoothing the transition to a trusted GP! motherhood

As a 14 year old growing up on a farm in Gilgandra, Dr Madeline Burrell studied hard to get into Medicine. She has never looked back. “I enjoyed the hospital system so much I stayed an extra year at Calvary ED to develop my emergency skills. I loved the variety, seeing things I hadn’t seen before and learning. For some cases, I still find myself saying ‘Aha, I’ve seen this in hospital, I know what it is.’” Dr Burrell particularly values relationships: “that feeling when someone trusts you enough to talk about how they’re feeling and what’s going on in their lives.” “On my third day as a GP registrar, a man was brought in by his girlfriend for a last-minute

emergency appointment. He was suicidal and at his wits’ end. Over the next year, he developed strategies to handle his mental health and started medication. Seeing him go from the lowest of low to getting back on track was so rewarding.” Dr Burrell’s advice to people is to find a GP you connect with. “Then when you do have issues, you have someone you can trust and you don’t have to look around in a panic.” Once settled in, she’s keen to get back to her childhood love of horse riding. “It’ll be good to have hobbies again rather than studying all the time!” Dr Burrell is available Mon - Thurs at Ochre Casey

Loving Canberra life Originally from England, Dr Rosalind Marshall is enjoying settling in Canberra after working in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast and in rural Queensland. “I love it here,” she says. “I explored the National Museum before lockdown and I’m keen to spend time at the National Gallery when things open up again.” Dr Marshall is fresh from six months in Toowoomba working at an Aboriginal health clinic and its associated refugee health clinic. “My time was split between the two clinics. It was a lovely clinic,

with great health workers and receptionists. They really wanted the best for their mob and were working hard to make that happen. But the refugee clinic was challenging work!” she says. “The patient would be in the room with a translator on the phone, so everything took twice as long and little things could be mistranslated.” Dr Marshall is completing a Masters degree in Islamic Studies and Classical Arabic. Dr Marshall is available Tues - Thurs at Ochre Casey

Midwife and lactation consultant Anne Endres’ life’s work is to build stronger, better relationships and a better start for life that goes way beyond the delivery of a baby. “Women often put a lot of emphasis on the birth itself, and they think less about breastfeeding or the challenges of life with the baby.” “Recently I helped a woman with feeding her premature baby. She was separated from the baby when she was discharged and the baby remained in neonatal care. It’s hard to build and maintain your milk supply in those circumstances and premi babies are also often sleepy, without strong sucking behaviour.” As well as advice around when and how to pump or supplement, Anne has tricks up her sleeve. She might suggest a “supply line” to give the baby a top up at the breast. “It’s like using a straw - a very thin silicon tube to provide extra milk. The baby learns to suckle and mum knows enough

nutrients are available, so it’s very reassuring.” Six weeks on, Anne is delighted by the pair’s progress, but she won’t take any credit. “I’m just a cheerleader! We all need somebody to point us in the right direction when we feel a bit lost. I’m always blown away by how well mums do once they have the right support.” Anne Endres is available at Ochre Kippax (Fri) or Ochre Casey (Tues) or by appointment as required. Some of her services may be eligible for Medicare or private health fund rebates.

At a glance Raiders’ season ends in a whimper The Canberra Raiders’ turbulent season came to an end with a disappointing 40-16 loss to the Sydney Roosters in Mackay last Thursday 2 September. Canberra had everything to play for with a spot in the finals up for grabs, but the heavy loss summed up an underwhelming season from one of the pre-season favourites. Coach Ricky Stuart said he believes his side is better than their 10th-placed finish suggests but admitted they don’t deserve to play finals. “It’s a shocking feeling because I think we are a better team than where we ended up on the table but we are where we are,” said Stuart. “Realistically, we probably don’t even deserve to be fighting

for the eight tonight. We were poor tonight. We were really poor.” In some positive news for the Green Machine, veteran Jordan Rapana capped off a terrific season with the 2021 Mal Meninga Medal. The recently re-signed Rapana polled 21 votes to comfortably win the club’s best player award from Josh Papalii on 15 votes. Tom Starling took home the coaches award, while Matt Timoko and Harley Smith-Shields shared rookie of the year honours.

Giants go down in Perth The GWS Giants’ defiant season is over after a 35-point semi-final loss to the Geelong Cats in Perth on Friday 3 September. A masterful five-goal performance from Tom Hawkins was the catalyst behind the Cats’ 15.13 (103) to 10.8 (68) win. The game failed to reach any great heights with the first half

feeling more like a pre-season game than a cut-throat final as the Cats kicked five goals to three to take a 15-point lead into half time. Geelong took control in the second half, leading by 38 points early in the last quarter before the Giants kicked three straight goals to breathe some muchneeded life into the contest. GWS’s charge ran out of steam as Hawkins kicked three goals in the last quarter to book Geelong’s spot in a preliminary final against Melbourne.

United signings Canberra United has announced some exciting news with Laura Hughes and Allira Toby putting pen to paper with the club. It will be Hughes’ fifth season in

Canberra after beginning her W-League career with United as a 15-year-old back in 2016, while Toby will don the green for the first time after joining the club from Sydney FC.

Paralympics success Long jump star Vanessa Low headlines Canberra-based athletes to enjoy success at the Tokyo Paralympics. Low broke her own world record three times en route to winning a gold medal with a jump of 5.28 metres. Swimmer Ahmed Kelly won a silver medal in the 150m individual medley SM3 final, while Canberra-born sprinter Isis Holt won a pair of silver medals in the T35 100m and 200m sprints.

For many vulnerable community members, lockdowns have meant a complete loss of income without any safety net to fall back on. GIVIT has been working with organisations who support families experiencing extreme hardship, be it domestic and family violence, housing instability, newly arrived refugees, or those with complex physical and mental health needs. One of the biggest pressures for these families is having access to essential baby items, of which most are expensive when living on a very limited budget. Requested items include baby formula, infant nappies and night nappies for young children still needing support with overnight toilet training. For those doing it tough, it’s a challenging decision to make, choosing between buying fresh food for your family, or essentials for your little ones. GIVIT captures all offers of donation, ensuring these families don’t have to make those tough decision and can experience a little bit of relief during this very unnerving time. Donors can offer physical items matching the urgent needs, or offer to FUND the item, of which 100% of donations will be used by GIVIT to purchase the item on behalf of the requesting organisation. Donations can be collected, delivered, or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whatsneeded, search category ‘Baby and child’, location ‘ACT’. GIVIT supports more than 400 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

Nutritionist shares top tips for lockdown health Congratulations Canberrans on surviving our first month of lockdown. Remember, you’re doing great to have come this far, and now is not the time to be putting a world of pressure on our diets. This timestamp may mark when many start to notice a change in their bodies due to the dramatic drop in activity, or perhaps the initial emotions have settled enough for the urge to “better ourselves” to kick in. Accredited Practising Dietitian, Georgia Houston of GH Nutrition, sat down with Canberra Weekly to provide tips from a professional on how to stay healthy during lockdown, mentally and physically.

Tip #1 – How to avoid the ‘quarantine 15’ The so-called ‘quarantine 15’ – or 15-pound weight gain during self-isolation – is a common complaint on the internet and may spark anxiety in anyone new to iso. Georgia urges Canberrans to remember the proven principles of good nutrition: Eat quality, wholesome foods: Fill up on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and

healthy fats. These whole foods keep you feeling satisfied for longer and provide your body with the nutrients and energy it needs to function well. Portion control: Aim for: half a plate of vegetables; a palm-size of protein, such as lean chicken, salmon, eggs, red meat, lentils or legumes; a fist-size of whole grain carbohydrates, such as brown rice, pasta, bread, potatoes (the browner the better!); two fingers of healthy fats, such as avocado, olive oil, nuts and seeds; plate your meals and snacks and sit to eat (standing and eating in the kitchen encourages pantry-grazing). Mindful eating: Eat away from the TV/devices and treat the meal as a singular activity, giving your stomach and brain time to talk to each other – this is called “tuning into your appetite”. Thankfully, it’s not rocket science. Unfortunately, there are no cheat codes.

Tip #2 – Brain foods to beat lockdown blues If you’re struggling to sleep, feeling sadder or more anxious during lockdown, remember that the brain accounts for around 20 per cent of our total daily energy requirements.

GEORGIA’S PESTO SALMON FRITTATA This recipe is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 3 spring onions, white parts only, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, grated 4 free-range eggs ½ cup milk 1 Tbsp pesto 20g spinach, rinsed, roughly chopped Sea salt and cracked black pepper, to taste 50g smoked salmon, torn 1 small zucchini, thinly sliced To serve Herbs of choice (red sorrel used here) Half an avocado, sliced 40g goat cheese, crumbled 20

canberraweekly.com.au

Preheat oven to 180°C. Heat olive oil in a small frypan over low-medium heat. When hot, add spring onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until soft. Remove spring onion and garlic from pan and allow to cool. Whisk eggs, milk, pesto, spinach, and spring onion mixture together in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the egg mixture into the frypan, or 2 small ovenproof dishes, and sprinkle over the smoked salmon and zucchini. Place in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the centre has set and the edges are golden and puff y. Serve the frittata with scattered herbs, avocado and goat cheese.

Here are Georgia’s Big 5 for optimal brain function and development: Fruits and vegetables: Did you know your gut is like your second brain? Medical experts call it such because the gut relies on the same type of neurons and neurotransmitters found in the central nervous system. It communicates with the brain in our head, playing a key role in our mental health. Fruits and veggies are full of fibre to support a healthy gut environment and vitamins to support brain health. Wholegrain carbohydrates: These are brain fuel and important fibre for gut health. Choose wholegrains for a slow and steady release of energy. Lean protein and healthy fats: These are building blocks for many brain chemicals that can influence mood. They are great sources of healthy fats and proteins that support positive mental health and can protect against dementia and depression. Dairy: Particularly yoghurt, which contain live bacteria, aka probiotics, that can boost our gut health. Water: Dehydration is a common cause of brain fog, headaches, and inability to concentrate.

Tip #3 - How to account for less exercise “Exercise plays a minimal role in healthy weight maintenance,” says Georgia. “The ratio is approximately 80 per cent food, 20 per cent exercise. “Even if gyms are closed, get outside and go for a walk, throw the ball around with your dog, or increase your incidental activity like gardening or cleaning. It doesn’t have to be rigorous exercise.” Georgia shares her advice for those dead set on using lockdown to lose weight.

“I’ve had a lot of clients with this desire lately, wanting to leave lockdown better than they came in. I like to remind them that we are in a pandemic right now. There is no need to use this time productively. Rather, let’s just get through this time with as much self-compassion as possible. Drop the pressure to be productive or lose weight. Your only requirement is to get through.” To find out more about Georgia and how she helps clients, visit www.ghnutrition.com.au - Anja de Rozario

That’s arts and entertainment Homefront arts grant program re-established As the ACT lockdown continues, the Homefront arts grant program is being re-established to support Canberra artists to maintain and develop their arts practices. Last year, 125 local artists representing a variety of artforms were supported with grants of up to $10,000 each distributed across two rounds. A total of $350,000 is available in this round, with funding of up to $10,000 granted to successful applications that: increase accessibility to the arts; enhance an applicant’s capability or capacity or artistic skills development; and/ or promote or market an artistic practice or creation, or promotion and marketing skills development. Funding can be used to support artists fees, associated living expenses and other costs to enable applicants to undertake research, professional development, skill sharing, or collaborative activities. The new funding is being made available as soon as possible, subject to a streamlined assessment process. Canberra busker Genie Roberts received Homefront funding in 2020 to write and record an EP titled Lifeless Things. The grant was largely spent on recording and production equipment, as well as getting the tracks professionally mixed and mastered. “Before Homefront, releasing my first selfproduced EP felt out of reach,” Roberts said. “The music that I wrote truly opened my eyes to what I am creatively capable of. It far exceeded my expectations of how my first EP would sound.” Canberra-based contemporary jewellery artist Kristina Neumann was also a Homefront recipient in 2020. The grant enabled her to develop an online gallery and marketplace, and to exhibit and trade in a digital marketplace, both in Canberra and abroad. “The ACT Government Homefront grant was a life saver. It gave me the resources to pandemic-proof my practice and make a new space for people to appreciate my work and learn more about contemporary jewellery,” 22

Neumann said. Applications are open until 5pm on Thursday 23 September. Further information on Homefront is available at arts.act.gov.au

Canberran selected for Hollywood talent development lab Canberra’s Linda Chen has been announced as one of five emerging Australian filmmakers selected for Untapped, a breakthrough talent development program for the next generation of undiscovered and underrepresented Australian screen voices. Run by Australians in Film (AiF) and Screen Australia and funded with support from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the initiative will help launch the international careers of Chen along with Kylie Aoibheann McDonnell, Shannan Tamby Lim, Kalu Oji and Sophie Smyth. AiF will connect these five filmmakers and their respective projects with Oscar© and Emmy©-award winning production companies including See-Saw Films, Made Up Stories, LuckyChap Entertainment, and Truant Pictures, ensuring they receive robust development notes and strategic pipelines to develop their early or debut work for the global market. Chen said the news was incredibly exciting and “a bit of an honour”. “All of the creators who have been selected are working on the kinds of stories I’ve craved to see in mainstream media for so long. “There’s clearly such a hunger for this kind of material but also a massive pool of talent yearning for initiatives like Untapped to help get their foot in the door.” An actor, writer and multidisciplinary artist who has worked in the Canberra arts scene since her teens, Chen credits the local community for providing a supportive, informal training ground in her practice. “There’s something about it being smaller and sometimes weirder that made it more accessible to me, I think,” she said. Launched in April this year, the Untapped program has included four open-access online masterclasses for all eligible applicants, featuring conversations with industry-leading filmmakers.

Canberra Glassworks announce new CEO On 2 September, Elizabeth Rogers was announced as Canberra Glassworks’ new Chief Executive. A specialist arts administrator, Rogers joins the Canberra Glassworks having served as Chief Executive of Regional Arts NSW for the past 15 years. Glassworks Chair Gary Rake said Rogers has a longstanding connection to Canberra, having previously held the role of Executive Director at Canberra Arts Marketing. Keen to build on the Glassworks’ successes of the past decade, Rogers is looking forward to commencing in her new role. “The Canberra Glassworks, with such a talented team of artists and staff, has established such a strong presence for an organisation that is little more than a decade old. I am really excited to be able to lead the Glassworks through the next stage of growth and development,” she said. Rogers said the new Kingston Arts Precinct presents wonderful opportunities, along with a few challenges. “I am really looking forward to being one of the positive and proactive influences on the development of that place,” she said. Rogers will commence her new role on Monday 18 October. Current CEO Julie Skate’s final day is Friday 10 September.

Now showing Val (MA15+) As Val Kilmer’s voice, narrator Jack Kilmer explains that Val’s throat has been damaged due to his battle with cancer. Val then presents hundreds of boxes of old videotapes housed in a storage area that he has shot throughout his life. Flashing back to a very young Val in one of his earliest home videos with his two brothers, and the story begins! Val’s first cinematic turn was in the spoof comedy Top Secret!. He would prove his acting ‘chops’ in Oliver Stones The Doors, but his A-list status was cemented with Top Gun and Batman Forever. The softly spoken, and ‘wooden’, actor earned a reputation of being difficult on set, and was deemed

“and you

responsible for derailing full projects as shown in Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau. It is amazing to see then, a young Val and his brothers remaking their favourite movies on their home video camera. We see Val’s flamboyance and love of performing that eventually takes him to the prestigious Juilliard School’s drama division to become a classically trained stage actor. It is very easy, then, to see how Val is

restrained by the Hollywood system and his frustrations at its limitations. A discussion of his part in the ‘difficult’ personae, however, would have made the documentary more rounded. Verdict: A fascinating, revealing, and heart-breaking look at the little-known artist, and misunderstood man, behind the Hollywood actor. 4.5 stars. Val is streaming on Prime Video.

This week, Jeff Popple reviews three thrilling novels for spring. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Twenty Years Later by Charlie Donlea Bantam, $32.99

Charlie Donlea is the master of the cold case mystery and his latest is another intriguing tale. The basic premise is that accused murderess Victoria Ford was consulting with her lawyer when the planes hit the Twin Towers, killing her. Her last known action was to call her sister proclaiming her innocence. Now, 20 years later, her remains have finally been identified, prompting popular TV host Avery Mason to look into her story. However, as Avery digs into the original murder, she comes to realise that the evidence against Victoria was far from simple and that no one wants the case re-investigated.

The Dark Remains by William McIlvanney and Ian Rankin Canongate, $29.99

Often referred to as the ‘godfather of tartan noir’, William McIlvanney changed the face of Scottish crime fiction with his famous trilogy about Glasgow detective Jack Laidlaw. When McIlvanney died in 2015, he left behind some scrappy notes, which have now been turned into a fourth book by acclaimed author Ian Rankin. Set in Glasgow in 1972, The Dark Remains is a tough, gritty tale that convincingly captures the style of the original novels. The dialogue sparkles and the tension steadily mounts as Rankin takes Laidlaw down some dark streets in search of the killer of a major criminal.

1979 by Val McDermid Little Brown, $32.99

Also set in Glasgow in the 1970s is the latest novel by veteran author Val McDermid. 1979 is the first in a new series, which follows journalist Allie Burns as she becomes involved in crimes that reflect the changing state of Scotland’s criminal and social landscape over the decades. In 1979, she is chasing her first scoop as she tries to track down a killer amidst the turmoil of Scotland’s winter of discontent. The book opens briskly and McDermid keeps a good grip on the reader’s attention as the story weaves its way to a tense and unexpected conclusion.

National Photographic Portrait Prize extended to January 2022 In light of recent and ongoing gallery closures brought on by the COVID pandemic, the NPG’s 2021 National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition season will be extended until 16 January next year. The NPPP is a stalwart of the National Portrait Gallery’s (NPG) program, offering substantial cash and equipment prizes for professional, amateur, and aspiring Australian photographers. For the 2021 edition, named Living Memory to reflect the extraordinary events of late 20192020 which included widespread fires and a global pandemic, judges – National Gallery of Australia director Nick Mitzevich, NPG director Karen Quinlan AM, and renowned Australian photographer Bill Henson – selected 79 works, more than double the usual amount, as a way of acknowledging the impact the pandemic has had on the creative community.

26

canberraweekly.com.au

Quinlan said extending the exhibition into January 2022 will give more people the opportunity to view the artists’ works once lockdowns and travel restrictions are eased. “Our original intention in making the exhibition larger and its season longer was to support the artistic community during this difficult period,” she said. “The reality is many of the finalists have been unable to travel to Canberra to see their work on the gallery walls.” Quinlan said given the NPPP is always an audience favourite, it was important to extend its season so more people can enjoy the exhibition. “There are so many relevant, poignant and beautiful works in this edition that capture the darkness of recent times, as well as human resilience and strength,” Quinlan said. Local fashion designer thriving in lockdown A quintessential homegrown small fashion business, Bianca Pavlic the Label was started in 2017 from the namesake’s home studio, converted from her garage in Wamboin NSW. A fabric fanatic, Bianca was constantly inspired by unique patterns and intricate beading on fabrics she discovered, often in op shops and vintage stores. The creations that inspiration bore were posted and eventually sold online. “I think of the fabric before I think of the clothes,” said the young designer. “I add them to my library of fabrics where customers can choose their designs from.” Since then, her custom festival wear, lounge wear and lingerie has gained almost 23,000 followers on Instagram - her main trading platform - with products sold in stores across Canberra and Perth, as well as shipping worldwide. In the midst of countless small fashion businesses being driven to a close during lockdown, Bianca has managed to stay busy in quarantine, maintaining her growing business. Despite having studied Fashion Design & Technology at CIT, and Fashion Business in Sydney, most of Bianca’s design knowledge was developed organically, sewing from a young age. Similarly, her strategies for pivoting during lockdown were developed by following her gut and observing her audience. “Originally, I had a focus on festival wear, but I transitioned to also making lounge wear and lingerie in lockdown. I kept an eye on my target market, what they are currently doing and what I can make for them. When festivals started up again in the US, I began marketing my festival wear towards them.”

Bianca emphasised how crucial having an online space has been to her business’s survival during iso. “I can imagine there would be a lot of challenges in moving to online from a storefront. For fashion businesses in particular, it would be difficult to take all the photos without models, but there are always ways around. I found customers sometimes prefer the flat lays to real models.” Online shopping can be daunting in lockdown, as sizes tend to be unpredictable and sometimes weight can fluctuate while staying at home. Sizeinclusivity has always been a priority for Bianca. After she was only taught to sew for editorial sizes at uni, she challenged herself to learn to sew for larger sizes. “It is very important to me that everyone can wear my clothing. I’m able to do this, as I make to order in each customer’s measurements, meaning there is no wastage of product as there would have been if I had items premanufactured. It’s very important to be size-inclusive as many labels aren’t, even when they can be,” she said. “Everyone deserves to wear the pretty things they see online and feel comfortable in them. If I can provide that to people, it makes me so happy.” Bianca stressed the importance of supporting her fellow local businesses whenever possible, during the pandemic. “It’s important that we put money back into our local economy to keep it going and thriving. Without local support, most businesses wouldn’t be able to survive. Shopping local means you are making someone happy dance every time they make a sale!” - Anja de Rozario

Spring clean your body and mind One of the joys of living in Canberra is that we get to experience four distinct seasons. I have to admit winter is not my favourite time of the year. However, every time spring comes around, I almost think it was

worth putting up with the dreary cold, as the burst of colour and warmth that follows is surely more magical because of the contrast. In traditional medicine, the seasons don’t just happen externally. We are part of nature, not separate from it, so we too undergo changes just like the tress, plants and animals around us. In spring as the sap rises in the trees, our ch’I, or vital force, is stirring. As the days get warmer and longer, we naturally shake off our winter reticence and tend to become more active and more convivial. In Chinese medicine, spring is the time of the year when the liver needs extra support. Signs of liver disharmony include tiredness, headaches, allergies, skin break outs, digestive discomfort, poor

sleep or feeling like you’re quick to lose your patience. Stress has a big impact on the liver, so the uncertain times we’re living in thanks to COVID will no doubt multiply the seasonal effects – even more reason to make some simple changes to support your liver. Try these simple tips: Exercise: Move your body any way you enjoy: dance, ride, walk, Yoga, trampoline, run. Just find a way that is easy and do a little every day if you can. Go green: Green leafy vegetables are rich in nutrients that support healthy gut and liver function. Green foods in general are considered beneficial to the liver, so whatever you’re having for dinner, add on a salad and dress it with olive oil and apple cider vinegar for bonus points.

WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL HOLISTIC WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA LIVEWELLNATURALLY.COM.AU

Ease off the alcohol: You don’t have to wait until ‘Ocsober’; alcohol-free beers and wines and even ‘spirits’ make giving up or reducing alcohol a lot more fun these days. Lockdowns seem to be associated with higher than normal alcohol consumption, so you might have to start small with a coupe of alcohol-free nights a week or try saving your drinking to the weekends. Just make a start and I promise you’ll likely begin to feel better both physically and mentally. Spring is like having a favourable wind at your back, making every effort you invest in your wellbeing more rewarding.

Online auctions booming in lockdown With lockdown impacting the property market, local real estate agents, vendors and buyers have had to get creative if they want houses to keep selling. The industry has found an innovative solution to not being able to conduct regular in-person auctions, and some agents suggest they’re attracting an even bigger audience through the online system. Partner and sales agent at McGrath North Canberra, Justin Taylor said his auctions have been booming since moving them to an online broadcasting system, with a 100 per cent clearance rate over the past four Saturdays. Mr Taylor said he has sold every single one of his last 18 properties on the market, and the number of registered bidders at auctions has

roughly doubled from around seven or eight during normal times to a high of 15 on the online platform. “It’s a very easy and simple process for buyers, it takes less than five minutes from the comfort of their own home,” he said. “The registration just has to be approved by an agent, so we get an email pending a registration that includes an uploaded picture of their licence, we cross reference the details, and then approve it once we’re happy and it’s done.” Mr Taylor said during the online auctions the only person the buyers can see is the auctioneer. Meanwhile, McGrath North Canberra general manager, Suzi Wells, the listing agent, the vendors, and a whole host of watchers are all tuned in from their own locations. He said the extra people watching

these online auctions has been about 100 each time, doubling the observers at in-person auctions. His theory around the increase is just the availability of the platform and the convenience. “I’ve personally found them great and my advice to agents and vendors out there is to not be intimidated or worried about the online platform,” he said. “I see a lot of auctions forthcoming, and I’d say to those agents to just set a date – it sets a deadline … and I’ve found online auctions to be very positive.” According to Mr Taylor, the key to a good online auction is having an experienced auctioneer who can use the platform well; such as their exclusive auctioneer Hugh Rainger, who has 20 years’ experience and over

12,000 auctions under his belt. “He’s got a few screens set up to see the bidding and we’ve got a good system in place where when the vendor accepts the offer, I’ll text his wife a thumbs up and she’ll give him a silent thumbs up from off camera and it’s a really seamless process.” Overall, Mr Taylor said it’s a streamlined process, far easier to navigate than one might think, and he hasn’t received any negative feedback. For anyone unfamiliar with the process, he invites them to log on each week and observe other online auctions as they happen. However, Mr Taylor does miss the emotion of in-person auctions and said it’s human nature for sellers to feel more comfortable when the auction is held on site. - Abbey Halter

Key work and health news will provide you with more direction moving forward, helping you feel more proactive and positive. a diplomatic and fair-minded approach to someone close who can be unpredictable will work for you. Look at the positives as opposed to the negatives with developments at home.

You’ll see positive results for your hard work this week, be this financially or in your personal life. You’re beginning a cycle that could generate abundance. for the best outcome, be careful with your choices by researching facts and details both financially and regarding long-term plans and projects.

a change in your status and relationship with an organisation, group or friend is on the cards. this is likely to improve your circumstances, but you will need to be super clear about terms and conditions of any new agreements. Be prepared to promote yourself; a little negotiation will be necessary.

this is a good week for collaborating on projects you know can be beneficial long-term. Your key to success lies in careful research and fact-finding, as you could boost key professional and personal relationships and also prospectively improve finances. You’ll enjoy sprucing up your home décor too.

venus in your sign will ramp up the passion in your life, and you’ll appreciate the joys of spring. just avoid overindulgence – anything from overspending to too much food – which you’ll regret. the key to success lies in good relationship skills, to ensure everyone feels cared for, including you.

a strong link with your past and the prospect of exciting projects will feel refreshing. If health has been a problem for you or someone close, you will receive news that offers clarity. You’ll find a healthier way forward. romance could blossom. avoid overinvesting if making large purchases.

this is an excellent week to consider expanding your knowledge and to explore new options. It’s a good time for creative work, for being innovative at work and for romance. Consider how to relate with someone close in a new way and, if you’re single, it’s a good time to find someone special.

You’ll enjoy the feeling of spring in the air and being more productive. It’s a good week for negotiations and romance, so be prepared to make changes in your life and to connect better with those close to you. adopt a diplomatic approach to avoid conflict with those you can simply not agree with.

GRANDSON Four-year-old Sebastian is Mick Gentleman’s only grandson in Canberra. “The one who lives about 800 metres from me is the one I see the most; every time I see him, he puts a smile on my face, and I get to spoil him. That’s great fun.”

THE SANCTUARY AT TIDBINBILLA

My favourite things

Mick Gentleman MLA

The area was terribly devastated after the 2003 bushfires, but the sanctuary has been reconstructed, and walking trails bring Canberrans closer to nature without having to go too far. “The way that it’s been rebuilt is wonderful …You get to see wonderful bird life and native forested areas.”

MOTORSPORT Mr Gentleman has been a motorsport driver for more than 40 years, competing in Australian and international rallies. The appeal of the sport, he says, is camaraderie. He was lucky enough to win the ACT championship four times, and won the NSW championship in a two-wheel drive competition.

MOTORING HERITAGE Mick Gentleman doesn’t just enjoy fast cars, he also collects classic vehicles. He owns the 1950 Holden purchased for the Chief Fire Officer of the ACT; an MGA sports car; and a few motorcycles, from small trail bikes to larger road bikes.

Minister for Planning and Land Management, Police and Emergency Services, Corrections, and Industrial Relations and Workplace Safety Labor MLA Mick Gentleman has been a union man all his life. “It was the left side of politics that really pulled me in,” he said. “Labor has a long history of standing up for working people, and that was my growth through my childhood.” Before entering politics, Mr Gentleman worked in banks and the Department of Foreign Affairs, and was a garage mechanic, postman, and security officer in Bob Hawke and Paul Keating’s offices. He was a union workplace delegate and a Transport Workers’ Union organiser when the TWU encouraged him to stand for politics in 2004. Mr Gentleman was the first backbencher to introduce a bill into the ACT: the very first feed-in tariff, which offered Canberrans an incentive to install photovoltaic solar panels on their roofs. Recently, Mr Gentleman enshrined industrial manslaughter into the ACT’s Workplace and Safety Act. - Nick Fuller

SPACE AND MOON LANDING NASA-run Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station was the first place in the world to receive and transmit the footage of Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon in 1968 – and Mick Gentleman’s father was in charge of the comms cable. “I got to stand with him at the console. [Dad] received a certificate of appreciation from NASA, and I have that on my wall.” canberraweekly.com.au
