contents 10 From the editor October is Mental Health Month, 31 days to promote positive mental wellbeing in the community and to reduce stigma against those experiencing mental illness. And it’s especially important this year as the impacts of the pandemic, lockdowns and restrictions can take a toll on even the most resilient among us. Please turn to our cover story on page 10 to read more about Mental Health Month in the ACT. Normally more a ‘time to top up my glass half full’ kind of person, I admit I’ve found it challenging lately to replenish my reserves. Like many small local businesses in lockdown, revenue is well down; unlike many that are still banned from opening, at least we can still operate, earn an honest living, and keep our team gainfully employed. It’s virtually impossible to get away for a break, so we have to find other ways to recharge, relax, unwind or enjoy ourselves. I’m relishing time outdoors to walk, do a spot of gardening, simply be in nature, watch clouds and find the silver lining. How are you caring for yourself? Reasons to be grateful this past week include a lockdown-compliant weekend picnic and lakeside walk with a permitted number of friends, a delicious Daana Pantry meal kit delivery, Aileen’s gluten-free sourdough starter via contactless pickup, neighbourhood walks and chats, binge-worthy television, and chai tea. Take care,

Hospitality sector bracing for post-lockdown pain With a clear pathway out of lockdown for the ACT released earlier this week, Canberra’s business community are seeking clarity on how businesses will be supported along the way. The ACT’s hospitality sector was already doing it tough long before lockdown was called on 12 August and will continue to operate under density limits for weeks after lockdown ends. Australian Hotels Association ACT general manager, Anthony Brierley, told Canberra Weekly the sector was “disappointed and frustrated” with the one person per four square metre rule in the roadmap announcement. “By its own admission, the ACT Government is well aware that the four square metre rule is unviable for hospitality businesses,” he said. “After weeks of productive engagement, business owners are distraught and angry that their

concerns have been disregarded by the ACT Government.” Mr Brierley said the Doherty Institute Modelling supports the one person per two square metre rule once 80 per cent vaccination is reached, which Canberra is on target to hit by mid-October. “The ACT Government’s roadmap is twice as restrictive as the expert modelling by the Doherty Institute,” he said. “They are unnecessarily inflicting an additional six weeks of financial pain and mental anguish for hospitality businesses and employees.” Chief Minister Andrew Barr conceded the four square metre rule is not viable for “some parts” of the sector, saying “that’s why economic supports will continue”. “The hospitality industry doesn’t set the public health directions, nor does it set what the virus will do,” he told reporters.

“The effective choice was do we keep everything shut until December or do we allow some of the safer end of the hospitality industry to open up. “Continuing to limit the activity in the highest risk areas that include nightclubs and the like allows other parts of the economy that had been under lockdown restrictions to gradually open up as well.” Mr Barr said his government is continuing to negotiate a further package of business support for impacted businesses with Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. A range of hospitality industry licence and fee waiver schemes will continue once lockdown lifts. “It is recognised that some industry sectors will require ongoing financial support beyond the time that the lockdown ends,” Mr Barr said. Canberra Liberals Leader, Elizabeth Lee, said she had heard

from small business owners curious to know how the financial support in place for businesses will be administered throughout October, specifically when lockdown officially ends on 15 October. “Some businesses may technically be allowed to recommence operations but will be severely hampered by the capacity restrictions; so much so that for many businesses it will not be financially viable to open,” Ms Lee said. “Ongoing restrictions place enormous pressure on businesses, in particular the hospitality sector. “We need to ensure these businesses are given the support they need until the restrictions this government is placing on them are lifted sufficiently to enable them to recommence their operations in a financially viable way.” - Denholm Samaras

ANU’s greatest minds achieving world-first plastic solution Woolworths Group, and venture fund Main Sequence, Samsara offers an innovative solution to plastics recycling that is carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable and doesn’t alter consumer behaviour. In Australia, 84 per cent of the 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste consumed by our population each

“If we’re determined to solve the plastic crisis, we need to start with where the problem lies, which is how it’s made and recycled,” says Paul Riley, CEO and Co-Founder of Australian enviro-tech startup, Samsara. Supported by the Australian National University (ANU), the

year (on average) ends up in landfill with only nine per cent sent to recycling plants. This low rate is largely due to current recycling methods being costly and inefficient. Samsara’s new technology will initially focus on PET plastic and polyester, which account for a fifth of annual plastic production. Ultimately, the company is striving to advance the process so that every kind of plastic can be infinitely recycled. Mr Riley said Samsara’s technology is a major breakthrough that is hoped will end plastic pollution so future generations can have a healthier and cleaner future. “Samsara’s recycled plastic looks and performs like the original, minus the environmental price tag. For consumers, it will remove the time and energy that goes into thinking about what products to purchase because Samsara plastic is not only

recycled, it’s infinitely recyclable,” Mr Riley said. “We’re working with the brightest minds in Australia from ANU and Main Sequence to create a completely new way to tackle one of the biggest environmental challenges we face in plastics. Our vision is big, and we are laser focused.” ANU Vice-Chancellor and Nobel Prize laureate Professor Brian Schmidt said ANU has some of the greatest researchers in the world and backs the startup completely. “Samsara has the potential to address a massive world change, and if we don’t address it soon it will be too late,” Professor Schmidt said. Samsara’s sustainable plastic products are expected be in Woolworths stores within the next two years, starting with packaging on products like mini tomatoes. - Abbey Halter

Australia needs a united pandemic exit strategy Melbourne now has the world record for the number of days in lockdown and despite a multitude of stuff-ups, Premier Dan Andrews, whilst conceding Victoria will never get to zero Covid cases for the foreseeable future, is still playing coy about when it can all end. The same is true of the WA and Queensland premiers. With his NSW colleague, Andrew Barr has handled this pandemic better than most, and he has generally been a good team player in the National Cabinet. However, he does not appear to have an exit strategy. There are significant problems now in the ACT with many small businesses that have been forced to shut down going to the wall, fully vaccinated families not being able to travel interstate to see mothers, fathers, children and grandchildren, significant increased

mental health problems, especially with young people and loved ones still not being able to see their seriously ill relatives in hospital. Whilst I am confident the ACT, NSW and maybe the NT, SA and Tasmania will reopen state borders at some stage soon, what of Victoria, WA and Queensland? I thought all the States, Territories and the Commonwealth agreed on a roadmap out of this several weeks ago, but it seems only NSW is following it. When 80 per cent of people in a state are fully vaccinated that jurisdiction should be fully opened up; the ACT is set to hit this target in October. As at 25 September, both the ACT and NSW have over 60 per cent of citizens aged 16+ fully vaccinated (health.gov.au). We cannot totally eradicate the virus,

just inoculate against it. As a nation, we cannot afford the cost in human and economic terms much longer. The Australian taxpayer cannot afford to have the Commonwealth bailing out the states all the time. Politicians cannot continue to hide behind unelected health bureaucrats. It is the PM, Premiers and Chief Ministers who are ultimately responsible to the people, not the health bureaucrats. Public servants give advice, Ministers make the ultimate decisions and can either take the advice or some of it but should not treat it as gospel all the time. The PM needs to get tough and put the pressure back on the recalcitrant State Premiers who are reneging on decisions taken by the National Cabinet. He controls the purse strings. The states and territories are

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

dependent on Commonwealth grants to survive. If Morrison told Andrews or Palaszczuk that their state grants were being cut by 50 per cent until they complied, they would soon fall into line. Otherwise, they could not pay for their bloated public services. The PM also has a number of powers under the constitution he can use as well. Politically, if he is seen to take control, it won’t hurt his electoral chances either. Parker Coles Curtis advertising moment

Parker Coles Curtis family law launches online service Canberra family law firm Parker Coles Curtis is at the forefront of Australian legal innovation. With three female directors at the helm, the pandemic saw the firm launch their Loungeroom Lawyer digital service in September 2020, providing an online lifeline to those struggling to access family law support in the traditional way.

Parker Coles Curtis is a boutique family law firm established in Canberra in 2020 by specialist family lawyers Jacquelyn Curtis, Catherine Coles and Debra Parker.

Parker Coles Curtis director Jacquelyn Curtis said her firm’s strong values to provide care and choice to clients navigating their way through a separation and family law issue is at the heart of their Loungeroom Lawyer product. “We are conscious of providing flexible times for people to engage with us and the need to cater to people from diverse backgrounds,” Ms Curtis said. “The idea came from my own personal experience with having a family law relationship breakdown and being time poor as a single mum to a young child.” The Loungeroom Lawyer initiative uses technology to break down barriers by having video conference or phone appointments scheduled from 6.30pm onwards at a fixed fee, unlike other law firms where clients are required to try and work around their job and childcare, and might have no idea how much they’ll be paying until they walk out the door. Loungeroom Lawyer charges a fixed fee of $299 for 45 minutes with a family law expert lawyer, sessions are offered five nights a week and can be arranged within 24 hours of booking

an appointment. “The community-based services where people are looking to get one-off advice are so overwhelmed, and people needing family law services need prompt and accurate advice,” Ms Curtis said. “We’ve found virtual communication has been a really good option for women, in particular, who just can’t face going through a traditional legal process. They can talk to a lawyer after the kids have gone to bed, in the comfort of their own home, without any pressure, and at a time that’s convenient for them.” So far, over 80 per cent of people using Loungeroom Lawyer have been women and Ms Curtis said they feel it’s an affordable, nonthreatening way to access legal support and find some peace of mind. Parker Coles Curtis have also received an inaugural Lawyers Weekly Champions of Pride Award for diversity within their firm and committing to being culturally and LGBTQI+ friendly. Every October, Mental Health Month raises awareness of mental illness, reduces stigma and discrimination against people living with mental illness, and promotes positive mental health and wellbeing in the community. The Mental Health Community Coalition ACT holds the event annually – but for Canberrans in lockdown, this year hits much closer to home. Many feel stressed and isolated; cut off from their social networks and daily routines, some have experienced anxiety and depression for the first time. The MHCC ACT says all its members have seen an increased demand for services, while calls to Lifeline’s crisis hotline have increased by 30 per cent. Mental illness is quite common, says co-ordinator Alison Hall; nearly

half of all Australians will have a spell of mental illness at some time, and every year, one in five people suffer a mental illness, 14 per cent will suffer anxiety, and six per cent will be depressed. But the lockdown has exacerbated those problems. Fittingly, this year’s theme is ‘Navigating your mental health’: helping Canberrans to stay mentally healthy and encouraging them to seek help if they need it – or even before. A smorgasbord of activities, from online presentations to a film festival, an art display, online bands, and wellness walks, will get the public talking about mental health, supporting each other, and finding resources in the ACT. And five community ambassadors – people with lived experience of mental

illness – will share their stories to advocate for mental health and to fight against stigma. There is no shame in asking for help, believes Bianca Rosetti, one of the ambassadors. She lives with a mental health condition, cares for a teenager with autism, and has chaired the ACT Mental Health Consumer Network since 2017. The earlier you look after your mental health, the better, agrees another ambassador, Tim Daly. He runs a mental health charity, and wants to break the stigma surrounding mental illness. Too often, however, men don’t seek help when they should; 75 per cent of suicides are committed by men, and that number is not going down. He wants men not to be ashamed to admit they need help, but to talk to a friend or especially a GP as early as possible. The nexus of the month is the ‘Mental health trail’, daily activities that are good for wellbeing, which Canberrans can use to look after their mental health during the pandemic and beyond, Ms Hall said. Every day, an activity will be posted on

social media, while the website features a weekly checklist and PDF. Booklets will be available from local cafes, and given to vulnerable Canberrans. A phone app will provide wellbeing resources. Also each day, the Mental Health Month Facebook page (@mentalhealthmonthact) will feature presentations and workshops about mental health, new skills in art and movement, or seeking help from community organisations. Ms Rosetti recommends to be grateful every day for what you can do: walking around the lake or your neighbourhood for a couple of hours, driving to the local shops, getting takeaway. On World Mental Health Day, 10 October, ask how your friends and neighbours are, and if they need help. And focus on the end of lockdown – and having coffee or a glass of champagne in a park with friends. A Call Out to Caring Canberra The need of asylum seekers and refugees for support to pay their rent and meet living costs is escalating as lockdown continues in the ACT. Canberra Refugee Support (CRS) is reaching out to Canberrans to donate and consider joining their ranks. In Kabul 2012, an internationally regarded boxer abandons his success in the sporting community to gather his wife and sons and flee Afghanistan. After half a decade in a Pakistani refugee camp, his family arrived in Australia for the first time, with their suitcases, a new daughter, and another on the way. CRS is a small charity with enormous impact. They help in a “good neighbour” capacity, providing advice, helping hands, and financial support when appropriate. Bob and his wife Barbara found this Afghani family three years ago and have been their volunteer neighbours ever since. “Regardless of how much of English you know, when you’re a stranger somewhere you will need help understanding how things work culturally, with government services, and within the community,” said Bob. “We helped the kids get into sport, with the registration and uniform fees, which can be significant when you don’t have much.” As with many CRS cases, a strong bond has formed between the two households. “Now on a cold winter Saturday, I’m there on the sidelines, cheering the boys on in their soccer games,” said Bob. One Canberra couple, readers of the Canberra Weekly, have shared with me the sad story of how they lost their son to suicide. The tale is worth retelling here, because it is the story of too many Canberra families. “Robbie” was in his early 20s, sociable and independent, working his way through a university degree when he fell mentally ill. An attempted suicide galvanised his family to try to get help for him, but what followed was 2½ years of struggle to find the right service, the right in-home support, even the right diagnosis of his illness. Robbie was admitted to various services, public and private, in Sydney and Canberra, mainly through the insistent, anxious advocacy of his parents, but at each stage treatment ended without him being appreciably any better, and without a plan for managing his illness in the community. At many points his parents were denied information about the progress of his treatment and where appropriate support could be obtained, officials citing Robbie’s right to privacy. This is despite Robbie living at home because he was too unwell to hold down a job or live independently. His condition deteriorated, and other suicide attempts followed. He was discharged after three weeks in a private mental health facility, but without an ongoing referral to a treatment specialist or to a service that could support him. His family was frantic with worry but had little means by which to navigate what community resource could help him. And in that dark, lonely limbo, Robbie ended his life. His parents are frustrated that they were unable to know more about what was happening to

WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR

him, consistent with the protocols that give a patient power over their own treatment and who can share that knowledge. Those protocols usually work well, but are problematic when a patient has impaired judgement and when appropriate services are scarce and can only be accessed by banging the table and insisting that help be provided. A middle path needs to be found. Protecting a mentally ill person’s privacy at the expense of their wellbeing, and possibly their life, does not seem to be a sensible balancing of priorities. Robbie’s family would have been glad to give up their advocacy – carried out stumbling about in the dark – to a health professional who took responsibility for diagnosing Robbie’s condition and lined up the treatments that he needed to get through. But no such person ever appeared. Despite 2½ years of asking for help no one ever offered to step up and take on that role. In those circumstances, with Robbie unable to self-manage his condition and his family locked out, there is a certain grim inevitability about how this story ends. Robbie is gone and his family does not even know what the condition was that killed him. Surely we can do better. Families will always be the first line of defence, but only if they are properly empowered. If this story has raised issues for you, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

sport ACT to host Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket Cricket ACT is encouraging households across Canberra to get ready to play by being part of ACT’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket on Saturday 9 October. Leading the charge for ACT’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket is local product Nathan Lyon who has been enjoying some backyard cricket during the winter months.

“Everyone across the state is counting down the days until COVID-19 restrictions ease and the start of the community cricket season, so what better way to prepare for both than getting involved in ACT’s Greatest Game of Backyard Cricket,” Lyon said. Visit cricketact.com.au for more details

Signing spree continues for United The signings have continued for Canberra United with Margot Robbine and Holly Caspers joining the club for the upcoming season. Robinne comes to the club as an experienced midfielder who spent time playing in France before signing with Melbourne City last year.

“Last season, the team at Canberra United played some exciting football, they showed great courage and passion,” Robinne said. Caspers plays as a winger and joins United from the Sydney Uni Football Club, where she has heard great things about United.

Adamas Nexus advertising moment

Support group for women who’ve experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse In 2018, Kristine Hewett and Keron Beath noticed a gap in services for women who have experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse and set about creating their own charity, Adamas Nexus. Three years on, Adamas Nexus has helped countless women thrive after experiencing trauma and, due to the pandemic, is helping even more women across Australia through online meetings. “My purpose is about using my learnings and experiences to try and help other women. We don’t expect them to come to us forever, and hearing they are going really well and don’t need us right now is wonderful,” Kristine said. \ The growth their charity has experienced in the past few years

has given them marketing and sponsorship opportunities to spread their message to more women across Australia and they’re very appreciative to their sponsors for their support. “We’ve received financial support from Hands Across Canberra, and it’s been really encouraging. We’ve been able to expand and make more women aware of the fact that we are here,” Keron said. Adamas Nexus is a post-crisis service, has vetting settings via a questionnaire on their website to determine if a woman is still in a crisis situation, and their programs have been checked by several members of the Australian Psychological Society, who are very positive about their work. “Two meetings ago, we had

a couple of new people in the session and one of our regulars launched into what she was going through, and one of the new ladies was just nodding intently. She shared second and said, ‘you have literally just said everything that is going on in my life and in my head, I didn’t realise there was other people going through what I was going through’,” Kristine said. “Instant validation like that is the kind of response that brings the community together.” Through their corporate sponsorship program, Adamas Nexus is hoping to use the money to hire more employees to run meetings for more diverse groups of people, including Indigenous people and members of the LGBTQI+ community.

Kristine Hewett is co-founder of Adamas Nexus, a Canberra-based charity that provides support to women who have experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse.

“We don’t want to have to exist, but we hope to help women thrive and learn they can weather their storm, and there is a better life ahead for them,” Keron said.

Order-in October

Hey folks! As we will be staying in lockdown at least until 11.59pm Thursday 14 October, CW Taste writer Anja de Rozario has compiled a list of lockdown-friendly food establishments that includes ideas for the school holidays, picnic boxes, and celebratory meals. Here are seven more Canberran restaurants pivoting during the pandemic, sure to have you covered for any iso occasion. Les Bistronomes 18 Blamey Place, Campbell

As heard on ABC radio, this French staple is embracing lockdown and making it green. After a local couple gifted Les Bistronomes with four buckets of homegrown Jerusalem artichokes, Chef Clément Chauvin realised that many Canberrans would have a surplus of vegetables, fruits and herbs growing in their gardens, particularly during lockdown when folks can’t readily share the love with their neighbours. Thus, the Les Bistronomes Green Card was born. For anyone who donates their excess homegrown produce to them, the restaurant is offering a 10 per cent one-time discount to dine in (when permitted) or towards their classy take-home dinner packages. Dine on poached pears, fresh baguettes, and the prettiest beef wellingtons you have ever seen. To order, call 6248 8119. 14

Moon Restaurant 41 Chandler Street, Belconnen

Brand new and Belconnen-based, Moon Restaurant is already a local treasure to the residents of the apartments above it. It may look unsuspecting, but this Japanese Korean fusion offers some of the best quality in the Belconnen area. As someone who ate ramen almost everyday in Japan, their spicy ramen bowls are authentic perfection, and only $15 during lunchtime. Other favourites are their karaage (Japanese fried chicken), enjoyed with rice balls, as well as their artistic sushi rolls. Be sure to give this local business some love during hard times. Now this is one for the school holidays. For the few who have not frequented Tikka Take on a night out, they specialise in age-old street food recipes from Central Asia and India with a modern twist. Capitol Bar & Grill 1 London Circuit, Canberra

To end with a flourish, these meal packages are for very special occasions in lockdown. Capitol’s famous prime meat cuts are available for fine dining at home through their takeaway packages. The first Capitol Feast Package features a three-course meal plus bottle, and instructions on how to heat and prepare for maximum deliciousness. Some signature dishes included are the Sonoma Focaccia, a 45-Day Dry Age T-Bone Bistecca Fiorentina, and the Basque Cheesecake. The Capitol Feast Package is designed for two and costs $220. Simple diet changes to make spring a breeze BY ANJA DE ROZARIO

Aaaachoo! Spring has sprung and, with it, warmer weather, pink and yellow blossoms, and, for 4.6 million Aussies, the dreaded return of hay fever. There’s never been a lot to do about pesky seasonal allergies, other than over-the-counter antihistamines. Or so we thought. Recent studies show that your diet can offer some reprieve. Pioneer in the field of nutrigenomics, Dr Denise Furness, sat down with Canberra Weekly to share her insight gathered over 15 years as a geneticist and nutritionist, on springing into action against seasonal symptoms. “While many Aussies associate the onset of seasonal allergies due to an increase of pollen in the air, growing research suggests that the health of our gut can also play a part,” said Dr Furness. “The good bacteria that live in the gut can help to reduce inflammation in the body, which then reduces the symptoms of allergies.” The simplest diet changes Dr Furness recommends to make allergy season a breeze are incorporating gut-friendly foods into your diet, as well as foods that contain natural antihistamines. “Assist the good bacteria within the gut to ultimately help reduce inflammation within the body.” Her top five foods to help manage allergy symptoms are: 1. Kefir is loaded with probiotics that work to keep your gut microbiome healthy and balanced. 2. Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that have considerable antiinflammatory properties. 3. High-fibre foods such as legumes and vegetables and cereals such as All-Bran or

Guardian with psyllium husk, act as prebiotics, supporting healthy gut bacteria. 4. Red apples are the perfect food to incorporate into your diet as they contain quercetin. Quercetin inhibits the production and release of histamine and other inflammatory substances. Red apples also contain vitamin C. 5. Pineapple is rich in bromelain, which has been recognised as an effective antihistamine. Research suggests bromelain is anti-inflammatory and contains anti-allergenic properties. While you may not notice a difference at first, it is important to load up on gut-friendly and fibrerich foods as only two out of three Aussies are getting enough fibre in their diet. “According to the National Health and Medica Research Council, the recommended fibre intake is approximately 25-30g a day,” said Dr Furness. Don’t be scared to get outside and exercise either. Dr Furness says that as long as you’re prepared and have appropriate management strategies in place, exercising outdoors should not worsen allergy symptoms. Just remember to: • Check the weather: Information on pollen count is readily available and will assist you in making an informed decision. Generally, pollen counts tend to be at their peak on warm, breezy mornings. • Choose the right time of day to exercise: Look to exercise outside in the early morning or later in the evening as pollen levels tend to peak around midday. Always consult your GP if your allergies are of concern – and stay healthy year-round!

Dr Furness’s favourite allergy-friendly springtime recipe: Grilled Salmon All-Bran Pilaf 3/4 cup brown rice 1/4 cup black or wild rice 1 1/2 cup vegetable stock 2 cups mixed chopped veggies (carrot, squash, zucchini, mushrooms) 2 Tbsp chopped celery 1 clove garlic, crushed 1/2 tsp curry powder 1 cup All-Bran Original 4 Tbsp chopped parsley 3 portions of salmon Dash of olive oil Dressing Juice of 1 lemon 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper

Place rice and stock in a saucepan and cook, covered, on low heat. Once all the liquid has been absorbed, keep the pot covered whilst preparing the rest of the dish, and the rice will keep cooking off the heat. In a small saucepan, fry garlic, curry powder, celery and chopped vegetables with a dash of oil for one minute. Toss through the rice mixture adding the chopped parsley and All Bran. Grill the salmon to your liking and serve on top of the rice pilaf with a wedge of lemon. Whisk the dressing ingredients together and drizzle over the salmon and rice.

CSO CEO Rachel Thomas said even with health restrictions set to ease throughout spring, limitations on audience capacity and rehearsal spaces would create logistical issues for the Orchestra.

CSO abandons spring programming amid lockdown Earlier in September, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra made the foregone yet still painful decision to abandon their spring programming. It means two recitals, two chamber performances, two main stage concerts, an Australian Series performance, as well as numerous community programs throughout October and November have been cancelled. Orchestra CEO Rachel Thomas told Canberra Weekly it was a difficult decision after doing everything they could to keep the doors open prior

to lockdown being called on 12 August. “We had a series of near misses earlier in the year in relation to border closures and we, of course, had concerts affected in one small way or another but were still able to put them on,” Thomas said. Even with health restrictions set to ease throughout spring, the limitations on audience capacity and rehearsal spaces would create “a lot of logistical issues” for the Orchestra. “As the lockdown continued with the uncertainty about the reopening, it became pretty obvious to

us that within the timeframes we had, it would be impossible to put on a viable set of concerts between now and November,” she said. Thomas remains optimistic the Orchestra’s 4 December Summer Prom outdoors concert will go ahead. “We’re really hopeful things will start opening up in December,” she said, “and this will be something special that the Canberra community can engage in.” (continued page 18)

(from page 16) In the interim, Orchestra management is working with their musicians to create a suite of digital programming to be announced in the coming weeks, while work continues behind the scenes to establish their youth orchestra.

18

canberraweekly.com.au

They are currently working remotely with Orchestra chief conductor and artistic director Jessica Cottis to finalise the programming for the digital offering. Thomas said the digital offering has been made possible by a “huge number” of audience members donating the cost of their tickets rather than requesting a refund. “We’re really grateful,” she said. “That is something we have learnt in the previous lockdown as well, that connection – our audience misses the Orchestra when there’s cancellations and vice versa.” “We take the wellbeing of our musicians very seriously,” Thomas said. “At this point in time it’s very difficult, the musicians can’t get together to play at all.” For Orchestra concertmaster Kirsten Williams, things have not slowed down during lockdown. Between communicating with the other musicians, doing a pilot program for women in music for the

ANU, and preparing to launch the Orchestra’s 2022 season next month, Williams has had her hands full. “We’re really looking forward to doing what we can do as opposed to what we can’t do, and that’s a crucial thing,” she told Canberra Weekly. “We were on such a wonderful roll before we were shut down earlier in the year and everyone is just busting to get back on stage for our audience.” Currently in the “very early stages” of putting together the digital series, Williams said the Orchestra has been looking at “innovative and creative ways to connect with audience” through playing, interviews, and more. “A lot of thought is going into that,” she said. “We’re in the early stages but about to start rolling.” With many Orchestra members biding their time by teaching over Zoom, keeping their practice up and staying in touch with one another, Williams said there is an inevitable sense of sadness about

the cancellations. “Everybody’s disappointed, there’s no getting around that,” she said. “Everybody’s doing what they can do for the students, for each other and just staying in contact. “And before we know it, we’ll be back on stage so we’re just looking forward to those times.” Williams said it would be a dream for her, the whole orchestra, and their loyal supporters to put 2021 behind them with a successful Summer Prom in December in the stunning grounds of Government House. “It would be really something special for us to just wrap up the year, something fun in the summer atmosphere that’s joyous for everybody really, and particularly after the two years we’ve had,” she said. Anyone who would like to attend the 4 December Summer Prom performance is encouraged to purchase their tickets now via cso.org.au - Denholm Samaras

Now streaming Intrusion (M) Child psychologist Meera Parson (Freida Pinto) and her architect husband Henry (Logan MarshallGreen) have recently moved from Boston to seek a quieter life on the remote outskirts of a small town after Meera’s bout with cancer. After returning to their newly developed home from a date night, the pair soon experience a home invasion. After 1987’s Fatal Attraction, the suburban psychological thriller grew in popularity during the 1990s with Sleeping With The Enemy, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and more. Using familiar settings and heightening the stakes of societal norms, they peered into shared primal fears and referenced Hitchcock in style, mood, and score.

Intrusion, like its modern architecture, is more minimalist, which is a good choice following Netflix’s overindulgent Hitchcock homage, The Woman in the Window. The flourishes of the neo-noir are pared back with an effective but low-key throbbing score, a single remote location and very few players. The mood and setting are subtly inspired by David Fincher’s neo-noir thrillers Panic Room and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Background material is delivered slowly but significantly throughout an efficient plot, all culminating in a paredback runtime like movies of old. The use of theme is also well done, exploring the idea of ‘intrusion’ fully. Verdict: A taut and effective suburban mystery thriller that doesn’t oversaturate the audience with homages to the genre. Hitchcock fans, however, may be left wanting. 4 stars out of 5. Intrusion is streaming on Netflix. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

CMAG to help Green Machine celebrate 40th birthday The Canberra Raiders started their journey as a top-flight rugby league team on 27 February 1982 when they took on South Sydney in their ever first NSWRFL match. Forty years on, come February 2022, CMAG will partner with the Green Machine to celebrate the milestone with an exhibition. Canberra Raiders: 40 Years in the Limelight will look to engage and include pieces of Raiders history from a broad cross-section, and they want your help. The exhibition will feature some pivotal moments in the club’s history, together with some significant achievements both on and off the field. CMAG senior curator, Sharon Bulkeley, said the exhibition will be a show for everyone – from die-hards to bandwagoners. “Fans will love discovering the

hidden stories of the club and new recruits can learn why the Green Machine garners such strong loyalty and pride,” she said. Whether you’re a long-time member or just go to the odd game for a bit of fun, if you have a unique or unusual object, something hand-made or from a key moment of Raiders history, or simply a great story or photo, it might just make the grade. Think unique or rare jerseys, flags, banners, posters, tickets, paper-based ephemera like programs, tickets, photos or even a home-made souvenir. If you have a piece of memorabilia you think would make a great addition to the exhibition, send through an image of your item(s), photo or story and a description to reception@raiders.com. au with ‘CMAG Raiders Submission’ in the subject heading.

Jeff Popple reviews three new Australian books about bushfires, opal mining and grandparents. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Firestorm by Greg Mullins

Treasure & Dirt by Chris Hammer

Penguin, $34.99

Allen & Unwin, $32.99

The horrific Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20, and the inadequate federal government response, has now been largely overshadowed by COVID. The threat from bushfires, however, remains very real and as Greg Mullins, the former head of Fire & Rescue NSW, points out in Firestorm, it is only going to get worse. In clear readable prose, Mullins takes us behind the scenes and onto the frontline as he details the horrors of Australia’s first giga-fire. The stories in the book are heartbreaking and infuriating, especially the refusal of governments to heed the warnings before the summer of 2019-20. An important and compelling book.

The Unusual Abduction of Avery Conifer by Ilsa Evans

Canberra author Chis Hammer powered his way into the top echelons of Australian crime writing with his debut novel Scrublands, and consolidated his standing with two good follow-up books about journalist Martin Scarsden. Now he turns his attention to the outback opal mining community of Finnigan’s Gap, and a set of largely new characters. Sent to investigate the death of an opal miner, who is found crucified and left to rot down his mine, Sydney homicide detective Ivan Lucic, and his inexperienced offsider Nell Buchanan, have to battle powerful mining interests, religious fanatics, and corrupt cops as they try to find the killer. An enjoyable read.

Two feuding grandmothers put aside their differences when they realise that their granddaughter, Avery, is being harmed. Joining forces, they kidnap Avery and head off on the run across country Victoria with a miniature schnauzer and Avery’s 89-yearold tech-savvy great grandmother in tow. Pursued by their families, the police, and an obnoxious media contingent, they are willing to do anything to protect Avery. The Unusual Abduction of Avery Conifer is a heartfelt and very witty novel that explores in an entertaining, and occasionally amusing way, some very real and poignant issues in today’s society. Back to basics You’ve probably asked yourself this question at one point – ‘Why did I buy that?’ Turns out, we’re all victims to trends and impulse purchases. Here, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Australia, Kirstie Clements, gives us some of her top tips for curating a stylish, timeless wardrobe. It’s all in the edit Fashion stylists and designers often talk about wardrobe foundations – the key pieces that every woman needs to cover every occasion. When I see a list in a magazine or on social media, I always have a quick skim to see if there’s a new addition I might have missed, like a quilted orange cape, or silver platform rainboots. But, no, the classics seem to have pretty much remained the classics, so it’s worth doing a rundown of the top 12 so we know we are on the right path. A tailored blazer: In black, navy or a neutral, such as sand or khaki, a smart blazer will pull any outfit together and can even be worn over workout gear. Current styles are a little bit oversized and boxy, for ease of movement. I am currently eyeing one in teal blue velvet for some added drama. Jeans: High waisted seems to be a defining trend now, either straight legged or loose fit. Warning: high waist and loose fit is heading into mom jeans, so is probably better left to the young. High waisted and straight is a great look with a heel and a jacket at any age. White shirt: You can’t have too many. Oversized man’s style is a good option. Looks great over jeans or black leggings. Leggings: Ah, the legging. They are such a modern, comfortable, versatile option, at any age. Wear them with a big white shirt, or with a T-shirt and a longer line blazer. The trench: A neat khaki trench coat is a nobrainer – a bit of French-inspired cool with a utilitarian edge. And pockets! A soft knit: A roomy black, grey or camel sweater is always appropriate, night and day. The short sleeve sweater is also a great cross-seasonal piece. Very chic and great over a long-sleeved shirt. 22

Suit: A well-cut suit is another timeless solution piece. Black is the obvious option and will double as a tuxedo for more formal events if you add jewels and heels. White is also a gorgeous choice if you can bear the dry cleaning. The jacket and pants can also be worn separately, of course, to make more outfit options; a cream jacket with jeans is a smart look for lunch or a dinner date.

Ramona jacket $329 Sportscraft

Dress: Choose any style that suits your figure. It might be a silky slip dress (wear a sweater, cardigan or trench with it), A-line, a sack dress with puffy sleeves, a sheath, a button-through shirt-waister, or a tunic. I bought a new one this week – mid length and with long voluminous sleeves, which are edged with a band of striking yellow fluoro trim to add interest. And with, joy of joy, pockets. T-shirt: A silky black T-shirt will work with everything. A key wardrobe essential. Mid-length skirt: Current styles are wrapped and A-line, but again, go with the cut that suits your body shape. I am currently mad about biascut slip skirts with elastic waists – I have them in metallic silver, navy silk and pink sequinned. I love them worn casually with a cotton shirt and a sneaker. Hoodie: This is a newish foundation piece, but casual loungewear and sportswear feel like they are here to stay. Make it cashmere for the ultimate in casual luxe. The oversized comfy cardigan: Chunky, ribbed or textured, the grandpa cardigan is key to easy weekend style. There are your basic perfect 12. Then again, I don’t wish to be too militant; there is room to be playful. This might be the moment to throw in some insanity. I need to discuss my new lime green patio pants.

Don’t waste your money on … (from previous page) Like every woman I know, I have been steered in the wrong direction by the general seasonal hysteria and have spent many hard-earned dollars on items that were not worth the investment. I’ve learnt by trial and error that not everything in a wardrobe needs to be costly. In fact, you can look a million dollars on a budget. Here’s what not to spend money on: Cheap jewellery: A stylist friend mentioned she’d been working with lots of cheap, chain store jewellery on a shoot. ‘It was literally falling to pieces in my hands as I unpacked it and moved it from the table to the model’s neck,’ she lamented. This is a terrible waste of resources, for so many reasons. One missing diamante and your $60 necklace becomes little more than landfill in a second. One or two pieces of handmade or investment jewellery will go much further and become a very personal signature, even if it’s just a simple pair of silver hoop earrings, pearl studs or a gold locket.

Expensive white or cream silk shirts: A white linen or cotton shirt is fine – they’re machine washable and bleach nicely – but silk, forget it. Inexplicable yellow stains will quickly appear under the arms and around the collar, even if the blouse is just sitting in the wardrobe. Save yourself the inevitable and expensive dry-cleaning bills and buy it in a more practical colour. Designer jeans: Jeans should be chosen for fit rather than fashionability. If they look good on you, who cares what the label is? My favourite low-cost denim is dark blue from Uniqlo (the Japanese are masters with denim: they put in just enough stretch without them becoming the dreaded ‘jegging’). Women should try on ‘men’s’ jeans too, and vice versa, for extra options. There is no reason to be gender specific or brand snobbish. Top-to-toe trends that don’t suit you: A more cost-effective way to shop is to spend money on single pieces that you really love and will want to pull out time and time again. A patterned silk coat, an embroidered bomber jacket, a gold loafer, a frothy printed blouse – they all become

personal statements that you can wear and enjoy for decades. Pricey lipstick: Yes, there is something highly satisfying about the look and smell of an expensive lipstick and the click of a quality case closing, but, once lipstick is applied, who would know the brand? I chased a woman down in a restaurant once after admiring her gorgeous deep wine lipstick and she admitted it was a discontinued colour by Maybelline she had found on a sale table. I then raided Priceline and bought every one they had left in that shade, so I’m now sorted until 2027. Something you’re only going to wear once: At one time or another we all have to buy something specific, perhaps a formal dress or a suit for a wedding, black tie event or ceremony. But don’t then let it hang in the cupboard gathering dust – wear it out, literally. If it’s a long dress, wear it later with sneakers and a leather jacket; break up the corporate suit and wear the jacket with shorts, the pants with a silk blouse. Don’t save clothes for ‘best’; aim for best every day.

The Vein Insitute advertising moment

“Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic issue,” says Dr Zil Yassine (pictured). Vein conditions can potentially lead to more severe complications if left untreated.

The colder months are an ideal time to have your varicose veins assessed and treated by the dedicated team of experts at The Vein Institute.

Step into spring with the legs of your dreams Are you ready to say goodbye to varicose veins? At The Vein Insitute, Dr Zil Yassine and his expert and dedicated team treat varicose veins without surgery – which means no invasive procedures and no hospital stay! The colder months are the ideal time to explore treatment options for varicose veins so you can step into spring with the legs of your dreams. Dr Yassine says varicose veins affect around 30% of the Australian population. While some view varicose veins as ‘just a cosmetic concern’, Dr Yassine says this is not the case for everyone. “Varicose veins can potentially lead to more severe complications if left untreated,” he says. Varicose veins can occur when your vein

valves are not functioning properly. Faulty or weak one-way valves will allow blood to flow backwards and collect in your vein, which will eventually lead to the swollen, twisted looking veins. Dr Yassine says veins are an integral part of the circulation system, taking de-oxygenated blood back to the heart, which is why vein

conditions should always be taken seriously. “Issues with your veins are likely linked to poor blood circulation and could therefore lead to health concerns related to your heart and lungs.” He says the signs and symptoms of varicose veins can include: pain, itching or heaviness in the legs; burning, throbbing or muscle cramping; pain that intensifies after long periods sitting or standing; and chronic swelling in the lower legs or ankles. “It’s important to treat varicose veins in a timely manner to minimise the risk of developing other health issues,” Dr Yassine says. “Each individual is different; however, there are some cases where, over time, circulation may become worse and cause changes in the colour and texture of the legs. “For some patients, if varicose veins are left untreated for too long, they can cause swelling in the legs and pigmentation of the skin. In rare cases, they can even cause ulcers.”

What are the treatment options? Now, for the good news! While the most commonly known treatment for varicose veins involves the surgical ‘stripping’ of the affected veins, which often requires a hospital stay and a lengthy recovery period, The Vein Institute can do it all with a minimally invasive procedure – no hospital required, and you’ll be in and out in under 45 minutes!

The Vein Institute uses the latest technological treatments for varicose veins and their personalised treatment plans have a 98% success rate.

The Vein Institute’s doctors use the latest technology from the USA and Europe to treat the veins using techniques such as sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation and medical superglue. • Sclerotherapy works to close damaged veins by injecting them with sclerosing agent, guided into place using ultrasound imagery. Once the damaged veins are closed, the body re-routes blood flow to other functioning veins and the treated veins disappear within a few weeks. • Medical superglue is another minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins by gluing them shut using medical adhesives. Similar to sclerotherapy, it seals the vein shut and the blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

• The Vein Institute also uses state-of-theart laser technology to treat varicose veins through what’s known as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The affected vein is located using ultrasound technology, a catheter is inserted through a tiny incision and laser energy is used to heat the vein and seal it shut. Again, the closed vein will eventually disappear, and the blood will make its way back to the heart through other healthy veins. Dr Yassine says the sensation of the laser treatments can be likened to that of a blood test or an injection, with many patients opting to read a book or magazine during the procedure – you can even request to hear your favourite songs!

To decide which treatment is right for you, your doctor at The Vein Insitute will see you for an initial consultation where they will perform an ultrasound and create a personalised treatment plan. Most treatment plans will include a combination of treatments carried out over a few appointments. All patients are provided with a post-care pack, which includes compression stockings that only need to be worn for a few days, compared with weeks or months post-surgery. Once you’ve completed your sessions, your doctor will perform a fi nal ultrasound to ensure the treatments have been effective. All treatments at The Vein Insitute are performed in a private medical clinic, with COVID-19 protocols in place to ensure patient comfort and safety. Medicare rebates apply and Medipay payment plans are available. Contact the team today to book your initial consultation with one of the The Vein Institute’s vein specialists and get ready to say goodbye to varicose veins!

Sustainable dream homes: Jennifer’s swimming pond In the lead-up to Sustainable House Day on Sunday 17 October, CW journalist Abbey Halter explores local homes and building projects that showcase the ACT’s innovative builders and designers. This week, we dive into a chemical-free swimming pond that’s a haven for its creator, her dog and the local birdlife and bees. In the heart of Macquarie lies the epitome of sustainable beauty in the form of a luxurious natural swimming pond surrounded by an abundance of native plants and wildlife. Local resident Jennifer Weselaar proudly beams at the sight of her backyard haven she is lucky to call home, but she did have to pay a small price for her opulence.

“I built the pond myself, apart from a couple of young fellows who helped me lift some of the heavier concrete blocks, and while I was running a wheelbarrow of gravel up the steps I miscalculated, faceplanted and broke my finger,” Jen reveals. “But I’m a lifetime gardener and it’s the best bit of garden I’ve ever done.” She found the concept of a natural swimming pond on the web and ended up deep in an internet wormhole where she discovered a plethora of different building techniques. Before installing the pond, she had always wanted a plunge pool or something of the sort, and decided to turn her “tiny, little, useless piece of a garden” into her own perfect wonderland over the course of three summers. The pond’s striking centrepiece is an old 1980s

spa shell that used to be round with a footbed in the middle. Jen says it is very comfortable and would easily fit “five fat middle-aged ladies with their champers”. The water circulates through a very small, economical pool pump and is drawn up from the ground through a gravel bed with bacteria that cleans the water, with the assistance of specific plants surrounding it. The plants absorb nutrients from the water which stops it from turning green in autumn when dead leaves fall into the pond. The pump and filter are set on a timer to run while solar electricity is being generated. As well as being cheaper to run and maintain than a conventional pool, Jen said swimming without chemicals in the water is fantastic – it feels soft and is so clear. While the water gets too cold to take a dip in winter, she said it could be heated with an efficient reverse cycle heater or covered in a plastic dome. “The water creates a microclimate in my yard; I’ve just had my pair of crimson rosellas come take a swim and peewees come on a regular basis – it’s an oasis,” she smiled. “A lot of bees come and take a drink in the summer; I’ve found if I keep my fountains running to keep the water moving, I don’t get mosquitos and the sound of it running is very tranquil anyway.” Jen loves her concrete wall covered in plant life surrounding the pond, boasting Hardenbergia, which is currently magnificent shades of purple and green, a few veggies creeping over the edge, watercress and water parsley. She said while the pond does get a little bit of scum sometimes if she hasn’t given it a scrub in a few months, it’s very low maintenance with beautifully clean, crystal-clear water. Even her dog prefers the pond water to tap water! - Abbey Halter

Spotlight on five top Canberra suburbs Canberra’s stable economy, diverse cultural calendar, dynamic food scene and highlyregarded education sector make the national capital an extremely attractive place to live, which is reflected in rising house prices and homeownership demand. Interstate migration to the ACT reflects the appeal of Canberra’s lifestyle with more Australians moving here than departing in both the December 2020 and March 2021 quarters. McGrath Real Estate founder, John McGrath, shares his top five Canberra suburbs showcasing what the city has to offer.

Griffith Considered one of Canberra’s “most walkable suburbs,” Griffith’s prized streets with period homes and close vicinity to Parliament House make the Inner South suburb a popular place to call home. Griffith’s highlights include: • A total of 20 parks within the suburb • Tightly held neighbourhood personally designed by Walter Burley Griffin • Home to Manuka shopping village, Manuka Oval and Manuka Pool

Hughes Founded in 1963, Hughes’ location at the northern edge of Woden attracts families looking for a forever home in a tranquil environment. Hughes’ highlights include: • Larger, contemporary homes and detached dwellings with renovation potential • Leafy streets with easy access to amenities • A new arrival to the million-dollar median club and located southwest of the city centre

Red Hill

John McGrath shares his five top Canberra suburbs, including Campbell (front left), Griffith, Hughes, Red Hill and Nicholls.

Returning expats are flocking to Red Hill with its expansive green space and its proximity to the highly regarded Canberra Grammar School. Red Hill’s highlights include: • Many historical properties date back to

the beginning of Canberra’s European settlement • An abundant kangaroo population call the suburb home at the Red Hill Nature Reserve • Home to the Federal Golf Club

Campbell Campbell appeals to both the nature lover and historical buff with Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve right next door and the Australian War Memorial located on the suburb’s northern outskirts. Campbell’s highlights include: • A mix of modern apartments and family homes on offer • Alongside the central cyclist loop at Lake Burley Griffin • Home to the Royal Military College Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy

Nicholls Around 13km from Canberra’s city centre, Nicholls in Gungahlin features an extensive list of prestigious homes near the beautiful views at Harcourt Hill. Nicholls highlights include: • Nestled around Gold Creek Village with English-style pubs and art galleries • Home to Gungahlin Lakes championship golf course • Great offering of local facilities and schools

Attorney-General responds to Healthy Homes for Renters ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury has responded by letter to the 75 organisations across Australia that are calling for better protection for the health of renters and the implementation of a healthy homes national standard. “Everyone deserves a safe and secure place to live. Almost a third of Canberrans rent, so we want to create a fairer, safer rental system for all Canberrans,” Mr Rattenbury said. Spearheaded by the Healthy Homes for Renters organisation in Canberra, the healthy homes standard initiative comes after the Better Renting Impact Report revealed 40 people die annually in Canberra due to cold housing. In his response, Mr Rattenbury said he shares

the concerns of Healthy Homes for Renters that many people in the ACT are living in energy inefficient homes thereby impacting their health and wellbeing and finances. He thanked the organisation for their advocacy. “As Attorney-General, I am looking at a range of rental reforms in the ACT, including minimum energy efficiency standards, ending no cause evictions, placing restrictions on rent bidding, and setting clear minimum standards for rental properties, such as accessibility, amenity, security and sanitation,” he said. “The ACT Government’s aim is for a regulation to come into force mid next year, with a phase-in period to allow time for rental providers to

comply, and to avoid undue pressure on industry capacity or the rental market.” The Justice and Community Safety Directorate is currently undertaking a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) to consider all possible options and their impacts. “We know that many renters in the ACT, often those with the least capacity to pay, are living in energy inefficient properties that are expensive to heat or cool. To address this issue, the ACT Government has committed to introducing minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties in the ACT,” Mr Rattenbury said. He has asked the Directorate to include Healthy Homes for Renters in the consultation process. canberraweekly.com.au

JACK FLYNN Testimonials

Seller – Lyons, ACT Great communicator, kind and thoughtful. Jack is a great communicator and he always kept me up to date with developments in my sale. Jack was also very kind and helpful to the tenant of my property during the sale process and is helping my tenant to find alternative accommodation as the buyer requires vacant possession. Jack is professional, knowledgeable about the property market and well presented. I would recommend him to any seller. Seller – Lyons, ACT Excellent agent, personable and knowledgeable. Jack's knowledge of the market gave me a useful guide price for the property. I never thought I'd sell a house before the auction date, but when I got an offer for substantially more than I was expecting I knew it was worth taking. Jack is very good to deal with, listens well, is patient with questions and importantly in these times observes the Covid rules. Seller – Kingston, ACT Low stress, professional sale with good outcome Jack and his team absorbed all sale challenges including property preparation and photography and auction. He communicated appropriately but not excessively. I was able to get on with my work knowing the sale was in good hands. Seller – Narrabundah, ACT Like finding a good mechanic - I know who to trust for future real estate matters. Jack was an easily compatible agent to partner with me selling the family home. I will approach Jack in future again for my real estate matters, it’s like finding a good mechanic or having a little luck along the way, certainly a happy outcome making Jack's acquaintance.

Jack is a strong believer that Real Estate is about people and not just property and he prides himself on going that ‘extra mile’ to ensure you receive the best outcome during your real estate journey. Your ACT & NSW Real Estate Specialist Mark Johnstone has been awarded Elite Agent 2020/2021, placing him in the top 2% of Ray White agents internationally. Doesn’t your property deserve Elite service?

“Mark Johnstone helped us sell our home for an excellent price – in fact, a record price for the suburb. However, it is not so much the price that impressed us, but the way in which Mark went about his business. I am exhausted just thinking about the hours and hours he put in, to ensure that we achieved the best possible outcome. And then there is Mark’s character and integrity to acknowledge: Mark proved himself to be completely honest and trustworthy. By the time the hammer fell, we knew that we had received the best possible advice from a very professional real estate agent.” - Dave & Katie

9 BRYAN HUDSON STREET MACGREGOR

Whether you're downsizing, a first home buyer or upgrading from an apartment, this one must be on your list. All living areas have north orientation which assisted hugely with the 6 star energy rating. The north facing lounge room, second living area/ study (or bedroom four) and master bedroom are filled with amazing sunshine in winter. The open plan design ensures that wherever you are in the living areas, you can see the side and back gardens. The kitchen is the hub of the home, providing the cooks with plenty of sight access to children playing in the home. The flexibility of the floorplan is enhanced with a large multipurpose indoor room easily adapted as bedroom four, a study or a second living area. Smart thinking right from the beginning has ensured that none of the bedrooms share adjoining walls. The home has been well maintained. There is very little for the new owner to do, as there is no mowing required on this site, and children's play areas are very close by. EER 6.0 New Listing

Martin Compston and Sophie Rundle star in this suspenseful Scottish drama about a wealthy couple who would do anything to have a baby. When Emily (Rundle) accidentally hits Kaya (Mirren Mack), a down-on-her-luck 18-year-old, with her car, the two make an instant connection. After learning about her desperate situation, Kaya offers to carry Emily’s last embryo as a surrogate. Although Emily’s husband, successful businessman Dan (Compston), warns about the legal and moral implications of such an agreement, the women are adamant. But as buried secrets emerge about Kaya’s past, Dan and Emily start to wonder if they’re the ones being used.
