I sense a glimmer of hope glowing at the end of the lockdown tunnel. What are you most looking forward to when lockdown ends? I’m keen to dine at my favourite restaurant again and visit a dear friend down the coast, while getting an overdue dose of vitamin sea. Most importantly, I’m eager to fly to Cairns to see my ageing parents once more. Last Friday night, friends invited us to their lovely home for a relaxed dinner party for four to mark the latest easing of restrictions. I had almost forgotten what it was like to dine indoors with people from outside our household. It was delightful and rejuvenating. The previous weekend, I’d met up with three friends for a lakeside picnic and walk in keeping with restrictions for outdoor gatherings. Circumstances have certainly inspired a renewed appreciation for the art of the humble picnic and its many benefits. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a friend’s belated birthday catch-up with a wetlands walk and lakeside beverage, all those people providing fun through the #ACTrocks and #CBRrocks groups by painting and hiding colourful creations for others to find, the HelpingACT volunteers who packed 60 welcome hampers last weekend for Afghan evacuees arriving in Canberra, Floriade blooms creating pockets of colour and joy across the city, and new season asparagus. Take care,

Budget overview: focus on recovery Helping Canberra’s economy recover from the shock of the pandemic and ensuring a progressive and equitable future are the tasks the ACT Government has set in the 2021–22 Budget, released this week. COVID-19 has been devastating for many businesses, but the government is determined to grow the labour market to 250,000 jobs by 2025 and encourage investment to drive economic recovery. The Budget includes a $41 million package for key industries; $20 million for the tourism and arts sectors; and $8 million for business recovery. The government has embarked on the largest infrastructure program in the ACT public sector’s history. A $5 billion pipeline of local infrastructure projects will support more than

15,300 construction jobs. Two hundred and fifty projects and 14 programs of work are already underway. The government intends to make Canberra Australia’s Arts Capital; more than $13 million will support local artists, arts organisations, and cultural facilities. The ACT Government prides itself on leading the nation in responding to climate change and protecting the environment. $63 million will be spent over the next four years to reduce emissions and to keep Canberra’s bushland, suburbs, and waterways healthy habitats for animals, while the $150 million Sustainable Household Scheme will open to all eligible households and individuals in the ACT. A further $14 million will be spent to plant 54,000 new trees by 2024 – part of a plan to increase canopy cover to 30 per cent by 2045. The ACT Government has budgeted $100 million for more and better affordable and public housing for low-income Canberrans at risk of homelessness – the largest investment in ACT public housing since self-government in 1988, and one of the single largest investments of any kind in that time. Social services and the opposition welcomed the investment, but said it was long overdue. Expanding the Canberra Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU), delivering a better Canberra Hospital Emergency Department (ED), and more
emergency surgery capacity are among major projects for the public health system. More than 90 additional nurses and midwives will be recruited across Canberra Health Services and Calvary Public Hospital Bruce, at a cost of $50.1 million over four years. The mental health system will be made more accessible for young people and their families, and alcohol and other drug services will be expanded. A dedicated coroner will be appointed, reducing delays for bereaved family, friends, and witnesses involved in inquests. The ambulance service will be modernised; a new service model will be rolled out, and specialised response capabilities such as infections control added. School students have faced additional challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic; the ACT Government will commit an additional $51 million to school equity programs over the next four years, to ensure children in local schools have equal opportunities. Eleven local shopping centres will be upgraded over the next four years, local playgrounds will be refreshed, and new dog parks and toilet facilities constructed. Essential stormwater works will lay the foundation for restoration of the heritagelisted Sydney and Melbourne buildings. Visit canberraweekly.com.au for more details. - Nick Fuller
Racism is on the rise in the ACT – and we must talk about it
Muslim spokeswoman Diana Abdel-Rahman OAM says while most Canberrans are inclusive and tolerant, racism needs to be called out. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Canberra prides itself on being one of Australia’s most culturally diverse cities; more than a quarter of the population was born outside Australia. But multicultural leaders worry that racism is on the rise in the ACT. At a Zoom meeting convened by Liberal MLA Giulia Jones last week, Aboriginal, Chinese, Indian, African, Muslim, and European representatives expressed their concerns that verbal racial abuse had spiked during lockdown, and that their communities were being vilified for having COVID. Cameroonian Cedric Nyamsi, perhaps the ACT’s first COVID-19 case of the current outbreak, was the victim of social media abuse. When an AfricanCaribbean man was quarantined with COVID, neighbours threw rocks at his door and window, telling him to leave the apartment block. Last year,
Chinese Australians were blamed for the pandemic. Indian radio commentator Vikas Sharma revealed his pain and bewilderment in a video on social media after targeting, racial abuse, and slurs came to his door. “Something broke inside; I couldn’t take it anymore,” he said. For a month, Mr Sharma’s family were harassed by neighbours staying in an Airbnb unit. The neighbours cursed them, mocked them, waited for them in the lobby and staircase, shouted at them from the balcony, and rang their doorbell at strange hours. “F…ing Nazis, f…ing Indian Arabs!” they screeched. Health Plus General Practice advertising moment
Meet Dr Mohammed Asif, our newest friendly GP at Health Plus Another passionate General Practitioner has joined Health Plus General Practice in Casey. His can-do attitude and welcoming nature are ideal for identifying Health Plus clients’ needs and skilfully guiding them towards health and wellbeing. Meet Dr Mohammed Asif. Over the past 16 years, his diverse career has taken him from Fiji to Australia, practising medicine up and down the coast. From metropolitan to regional hospitals, emergency care to general practice, Dr Asif knows from experience exactly where he works best. “The warm welcoming community of country towns taught me about Australian living and showed me how a
GP can become like extended family. The sense of community is unparalleled,” he said. “I chose to practise in Canberra because it really is a big country town.” Dr Asif has seen firsthand how bedside manner can make or break a patient’s treatment. Working in emergency care, he couldn’t help but wonder what happened to his patients after they left the ED. Now he practises by the ethos that a doctor-patient relationship doesn’t happen overnight. “Continuance of care is very important to me. When you invest enough time into a doctor-patient relationship, you do see that people are capable of enormous changes in their lives,” he smiled. A big believer in togetherness,
Dr Asif has found a new family at Health Plus General Practice, where practising good medicine goes hand and hand with keeping family and community at the forefront. A father of two, he specialises in paediatrics, as well as general dermatology and minor skin procedures. “Because of the harsher environment, combined with Australians’ love of being outdoors, dry skin, eczema and allergies are prominent in the bush capital. There’s no need to suffer in silence, often there’s something we can do to help.” Outside of work, when he’s not spending time with his family, Dr Asif can be found dabbling in art and acrylic painting, as

Indian radio commentator Vikas Sharma said police treated frightening racial abuse directed at his family at home as “a neighbourly squabble”. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Frightened for his family’s lives, Mr Sharma talked to the police – but they treated it more as a neighbourly squabble than as a serious incident, he said. “People know that nothing’s going to happen; they commit such things again and again because they can get away with it,” he said. Mr Sharma said his example was only of one many stories of discrimination he had heard in Canberra. Migrants contribute a great deal to the community, but often had to deal with petty bias every day, because of their appearance, their clothes, or their accent, Mr Sharma said. Muslim spokeswoman Diana Abdel-Rahman OAM said most Canberrans are inclusive and tolerant, but racism also came in peaks and troughs, and needed to be called out. Both Mr Sharma and Ms Abdel-Rahman believe an education campaign is necessary
to stop racism in the community and call it out. Mrs Jones said many migrants stayed silent because they did not know how to report racism, or who to discuss it with. “There is fear that no-one will defend them, and a deep-seated belief that they are alone,” she said. There is no place for racism in the ACT, believes Tara Cheyne, ACT Minister for Human Rights and Multicultural Affairs. “It is against the law to vilify a person or group on the grounds of race,” Ms Cheyne said. “Racism is a community responsibility, and people should call out racism at every opportunity when it is safe to do so.” If people experience racism or racial vilification, or witness these behaviours, they can report it to the ACT Human Rights Commission (HRC) through their website, by calling 6205 2222, or on social media. - Nick Fuller

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
Police must not be politicised One of the underreported potential problems that may emerge from COVID lockdowns is the way some states, like Victoria, have used their police forces to effectively do their dirty work for them and, in the process, become politicised. I’ve always been very pro police. I worked as an ACT Public Prosecutor in the 1980s before going into the Assembly and during my nearly 20 years in ACT politics, introduced numerous pieces of legislation to make the job of our police easier. I was a police minister and an AG and regarded then, as I do now, our splendid men and women in blue as the best police force in the country. They need our full support, as a community, to help them uphold the rule of law in our society. The ACT Assembly needs to ensure our police are given the necessary resources and legislative assistance to enable them to do their job. Even in COVID times, our local police have largely managed to not be too heavy handed and have used their discretion sensibly in enforcing the law.
Unfortunately, in Victoria, some of the police have gone overboard. I was dismayed to see footage showing police elbow to the ground and then pepper spray a 71-year-old woman and, whilst arresting a bloke on the ground, another policeman appeared to drop his knee into the fellow’s back. Interestingly, only Sky News seemed to make anything of it. I know Dan Andrews has a tame media corps in Melbourne, but that’s ridiculous! Scenes such as police arresting kids playing in a playground, moving young people on who are sitting on park benches (as happened to my grandson in Melbourne last year), overreacting with violence to some apparently peaceful demonstrators, and not being able to exercise their discretion in enforcing the new laws may well lead to ongoing problems after COVID has been overcome and we return to normal. I would hate to see the general public become reluctant to help police in the execution of their duty as a result of overzealous enforcement of what have often proved to be draconian,
unnecessary laws enacted by panicky state governments during COVID. Unfortunately, the overreaction by some Victorian police, in particular, has not helped. I am probably the last person to want to see disciplinary action taken against police, as I know just how hard their job is, but what I saw in some of the footage from Victoria seemed well over the top and the culprits need to be disciplined. This is not China or the Soviet Union. I have heard very few complaints in the ACT but there have been quite a few from interstate. All governments need to tread very carefully here. Our police should not be used for what appears to be political purposes. The citizens of Australia must feel comfortable in trusting our police and not be afraid to approach them. I fear that trust may well have been set back a little because of the attitude of the Andrews Government in Victoria. Vaccine mandate for frontline healthcare workers The ACT Government is working on mandating COVID-19 vaccinations for healthcare workers in the Territory across certain settings. The first phase will focus on staff at the highest risk of encountering COVID-19: frontline staff in hospitals, any healthcare facility

operated by Canberra Health Services, day hospitals, in hospice, and ambulance services. The current proposal is that workers must have at least one dose of vaccine by no later than 29 October and a second dose by no later than 1 December. The announcement is in line with Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) advice provided on Friday 1 October, with most other Australian jurisdictions already having moved down this path. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said vaccine numbers in the healthcare workforce were already high in the wake of the mandate. “Most other jurisdictions have moved down this path,” Ms StephenSmith said.
“The impact on the workforce will be small, if any.” As at 1 October, more than 80 per cent of ACT health staff have selfreported they have been vaccinated with at least one dose, and 73 per cent said they were fully vaccinated. “We’re actually quite confident that this number is higher,” Ms Stephen-Smith said. The health minister said mandating vaccines benefits employers by allowing them to require staff to tell them. Consultation began this week with the healthcare workforce and other key stakeholders to finalise the details of the public health direction. A phased approach to other healthcare settings will be considered in the “coming weeks and months”. The government is currently
negotiating with unions and industrial representatives the implementation of a mandatory vaccine across the ACT public service more broadly. “That does include an opportunity for people to be redeployed if they are unwilling to get vaccinated,” Ms Stephen-Smith said. Since 17 September, a COVID-19 vaccine mandate has been in place for aged care workers. Prior to the mandate being announced, the vaccination rate amongst aged care workers stood at 48 per cent before doubling in the space of three weeks. “By the time the mandate came into effect, we had 99 per cent of that workforce vaccinated and we’re now at 100 per cent,” Ms Stephen-Smith said. - Denholm Samaras

Tarryn’s Silver Linings Playbook In 2013, Tarryn Fowler watched her older cousin Michelle battle and beat breast cancer, only for it to return five years later and take her life, leaving Michelle’s young children without a mother. Tarryn promised herself that she wouldn’t let her cousin’s death be in vain. Then at 33, with two babies of her own, Tarryn received the same diagnosis, and watched dread creep over the faces of her family. They were devastated that this was happening again. Tarryn knew what lay ahead of her. “Right, now that’s two reasons that we need to get the message out there to get checked early,” she said, and promptly became an ambassador for the National Breast
Cancer Foundation. “I’ve always tried to find the silver lining in everything,” said Tarryn. “For me, this was that. “If I can get one woman to check her breasts more regularly, or one person to donate, at least something positive has come out of me getting breast cancer.” Tarryn watched on as women in her life who survived breast cancer seemed to recover better emotionally if they maintained hope throughout the process. She clung to her positivity, even and especially at her lowest points. “Chemo to me wasn’t the hardest part. Losing your hair, losing your identity, isn’t easy. For six weeks your life seems to revolve around chemo. But for me, the hardest

part was when it all stopped. The appointments stopped, you weren’t seeing someone every day or every week … you’re on your own. And now that your hair is growing back, and you’re getting back to work, everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you’re better now’. “For the next 10 years I’m taking hormone blockers and I’m currently going through menopause at 33 years old. I’m very lucky that my husband and I had finished our family, that’s not always the case for everyone. People say it’s life back to normal, but your body is completely different.” After grieving the loss of her former self, Tarryn picked herself up and dusted herself off. She came to terms with not being “the patient” anymore. “I was never a very good patient anyway,” she smiled. “I was lucky because I had the ambassador position, so I had something I could throw myself into along with work.” Tarryn’s son was still only two when she was diagnosed, and her daughter was not yet 18 months. “When I was first diagnosed, I’d tell myself ‘it’s okay; they’re young, they won’t remember me being sick.’ Then one night, I was putting my son to bed. As he’s dozing off, he likes to tell stories. He looked at me and goes, ‘Mummy, I’m going to be a doctor when I’m a big boy.’ I said ‘Oh, that’s great, sweetheart, you can be whatever you want’, and he says, ‘Because then I can help cut the bad stuff out of you.’ “I’ve cried three times during this whole thing, and that was one of them,” Tarryn said. “On the worst days, you’re lying in bed, hearing them squeal with delight, or laugh, hearing
those amazing things happening, and realising what you’re missing out on. But it hit home what else I could miss out on if I wasn’t here fighting. Watching them start school, grow up, get married - I don’t want to miss out on that. “So, anything I can do to be here for the long haul, I’m all in.” Tarryn’s support network came to her aid during her recovery. “I work with an amazing bunch of women who put together this massive gift basket of all the things they researched that someone going through chemo might need. My best friend came over and worked next to me for a day when I couldn’t get off the couch, just so I had company. My mum came to every radiation session. It was what she felt she could do, so she did. “My dad really stepped up and helped look after my children and made sure that their life felt as normal as possible. My husband, who used to go to the hairdresser once a month and spend a ridiculous amount on a haircut, shaved his head when I had to shave mine. Then all the guys in his work team shaved their heads too in solidarity, and I haven’t even met these people! “When something horrible happens, amazing things can come out. People reminding us of how important we are as human beings.” Tarryn finished radiation in May this year. Further tests will follow. She looks forward to hearing the words “No. Evidence. Detected.” To support the National Breast Cancer Foundation, visit nbcf.org.au/donate - Anja de Rozario

What to do when a loved one has cancer It is one of the hardest things life throws at many of us. With half of all Australians receiving a cancer diagnosis by the age of 85, most people will see a loved one face cancer in our lifetimes. Yet no one is ever really prepared. What do you do? What can you say? What sort of help can you provide without it seeming like too much, or too little? Tarryn Fowler, a local mother of two, shared her battle with breast cancer with Canberra Weekly, along with what helped her through the most difficult times of her life. When Tarryn was diagnosed, her son was two-and-a-bit years old, and her daughter was not yet 18 months. The young mum observed an interesting parallel in the best help she received from her family and friends. “It’s funny because it’s sort of the same as when someone has a baby. Home-cooked meals always help, as they won’t always feel up to cooking. If they have a family, it’s helpful to offer to take the kids out for a day, even just to the park. During chemo, there are days where you feel like you’ve been hit by a bus. Even offering to sleep on the couch in case the kids wake up or coming over to put a load of washing on can help so much. “Show that you’ve done some research on what they’re going through. My best friend put together this beautiful gift basket that had lollies that were really good for when you’re not feeling hungry, some icy poles for the days you can’t eat, socks to keep your feet warm. At the end there
was a bottle of my favourite wine – ‘For us to drink when you beat this’,” she said. “Having that positive attitude really helps motivate you. You don’t want your loved ones to say, ‘Poor you’. Instead say, ‘It’s okay. You’re going to beat this’ and ‘What can we do to help?’.” Tarryn emphasised that helping your loved one is not limited to when they are going through chemo. “For me, one of the hardest parts was when it all stopped. The appointments all stopped, you weren’t seeing someone every day or every week, you were on your own. And now that your hair was growing back, and you’re getting back to work, everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you’re better now’. In reality, your body is completely different than before cancer, and you really have to pick yourself up and dust yourself off.” To look after your loved one in this stage of healing, Tarryn said it’s all about awareness. “I wasn’t even aware of that low point until my mum had done the research. She said to me, ‘I’m just letting you know, for the next two weeks, I’m going to be checking in on you every day’. And it helped a lot. Just know that even if your loved one has gotten the okay to say they’re healed, it doesn’t mean that they feel okay inside.” For more information, visit www.cancercouncil.com.au/ cancer-information/for-familyand-friends - Anja de Rozario

At a glance Bunton returns to Caps Alex Bunton will make her return to basketball with the UC Capitals in the upcoming WNBL season. Bunton first played for the Caps back in 2012 before playing in Russia and representing Australia. An unfortunate run with injuries that featured 11 knee surgeries saw her give the game away, but she will now return to the game she loves. “The opportunity to return to basketball this year was something I couldn’t turn down,” said Bunton. “After a long two years and a baby in between, I have never felt better mentally and physically.” The WNBL season is set to kick off on 6 November.

GIVIT donation of the week: Baby essentials GIVIT is working closely with a Canberra-based charity that is working to ensure Indigenous communities have a bright future based on sound physical health, safe comforting homes and opportunities that create independence and stability. The organisation is focusing on encouraging more Indigenous mothers living in remote communities to bring their babies and young children to the local health clinic or visiting health service for essential medical check-ups. The charity is aiming to create gift bags for new mothers to feel supported. The items they are urgently seeking include digital thermometers, teething toys, soft soled shoes for babies 6-12 months, face washers and new baby books. They are hoping to put together 50 gift hampers for mothers, giving these women access to essential items they otherwise would not be able to provide for their new babies. All items for this project must be new to ensure the health and safety for each child. Donors can give new items or monetary donations, of which 100 per cent of funds goes towards purchasing the items needed. Donations can be collected by, delivered, or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whats-needed, search category ‘Baby and Child’, location ‘ACT’.

A Use it Up feast When OzHarvest teamed up with BehaviourWorks Australia to understand the most impactful way Aussie households can act against climate change, they found the overwhelming answer is to use up the food they have at home. The research, conducted by BehaviourWorks at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, revealed that food waste
contributes around 8-10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. That is more than extracting oil (3.8 per cent), producing plastic (3.8 per cent), and air travel (1.9 per cent). If food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the United States, and the real kicker is that 70 per cent of the food
An easy way to use up fruit Fruit is a big wastage weakness for many of us. If it’s a little mushy, or a little brown, many would reach for the bin. Here’s an easy dessert for any ageing fruit in your kitchen.
Fruit – whatever needs using up! Frozen puff pastry A little sprinkle of sugar
Apples and pears Stone fruit and mixed berries
third of all food produced in this country! Tackling food wastage is the low hanging fruit to getting climate change results fast. You don’t have to buy an electric car or solar panels to reduce your carbon footprint. Reducing your food waste can be simple. Here are two easy recipes for dinner and dessert, a Use It Up feast to kick things off.
An easy way to use up herbs
Line a baking tray with parchment paper, put a sheet of pastry in the middle.
We all have a mysterious spice cabinet or herbs we bought for a trial recipe and never touched again. Or maybe you decided a herb garden would be “so green” before realising you will never need that much parsley. Don’t bin them! Try this instead.
Thinly slice the fruit, pile in the middle of the sheet of pastry and sprinkle with sugar.
1 cup of pine nuts (or any nuts or pumpkin seeds)
Fold edges of pastry in to enclose some of the filling and bake at 190oC for 30-35 minutes.
1 bunch of basil or any herbs that need using up (remove from stems if necessary)
You can add jam for extra flavour if you have any.
Any leftover bagged salad/spinach/ rocket
Some good combinations are: Strawberries and bananas
we waste is perfectly edible. Like a Monday deadline on a Sunday night, Australia’s national target to halve food waste by 2030 (in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal) is looming fast, and we haven’t done nearly enough so far. Australian households bin a total of 2.5 million tonnes of food wastage every year – that’s one
Dry toast seeds in a pan until golden. Put everything in blender, whizz until fairly smooth, adding a little olive oil at a time. Adjust seasoning and mix through with freshly cooked pasta!
3 cloves of garlic Hot Tip: Always keep some pastry in your freezer so it’s easy to use up soft fruit, instead of throwing it in the bin.

Grated or ground nutmeg, to serve Line a 24 cm cake tin or 11 x 27 x 9 cm loaf tin with baking paper (it will mould to the tin better if you scrunch it up well first, then spread it out to line the tin). Combine half of the honey and 2.5 tbsp of the cream in a small saucepan and cook on high until the mixture smells super caramelly (almost burnt), about 4 minutes. Pour immediately into a room-temperature bowl to cool. Half-fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to a gentle simmer over low heat. Place the egg yolks and remaining honey in a medium metal bowl that will sit securely on top of the saucepan without touching the water. Place the bowl over the simmering water and beat with hand-held electric beaters until the mixture is pale, creamy, and frothy. Remove the bowl from the saucepan and set aside. Pour the remaining cream into a deep medium bowl and beat until thickened but not too stiff. Gently fold the cream and the cooled burnt honey mixture into the beaten egg mixture. Everything should now be in one bowl. Pour into the prepared tin, then cover and freeze for 3 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, remove the semifreddo from the freezer, take out of the tin by pulling on the paper, then remove the paper and place the semifreddo on a plate or cake stand. Don’t panic if the paper sticks. Just wait a couple of minutes for the semifreddo to soften, and it will peel off super easily. Scatter the fruit and edible flowers over the top and sprinkle with nutmeg. Hot Tip: When cherries are out of season, try finely diced pear, sautéed in a pan with a little butter and vanilla bean powder, then cooled to room temperature. You can keep the semifreddo in the freezer for 3–4 days before serving. Images and text from Low Tox Life Food by Alexx Stuart, photography by Cath Muscat. Murdoch Books RRP $36.99.
Food for thought The latest in foodie news, events and products. A recent study showed that coffee beat sex as Australians’ number one guilty pleasure. The research, conducted by Jamaica Blue in celebration of International Coffee Day last week, surveyed over 1,000 Australians. Other answers showed that one in five parents (21 per cent) said coffee was their saviour in managing home-schooling, while 23 per cent of all Australians say they survived lockdown thanks to their caffeine fix. Other guilty pleasures that Aussies skipped over to select coffee as their go-to included chocolate and alcohol. Unsurprisingly, caffeine consumption in our country is continuing a northward trend.
While two in three Aussies drink coffee every day, interestingly, a staggering one in four (28 per cent) said they can’t live without coffee, and one in three (29 per cent) admitted to drinking more coffee now than 12 months ago. While coffee is the top guilty pleasure, it appears your gender may sway your coffee order. Cappuccinos were seen as the crowd pleaser as the most popular order for both sexes, while women prefer lattes - and men are more likely to pick a flat white. Long and short blacks were over twice as popular with men than women. Other findings reveal that caffeine headaches and withdrawals may be rampant with almost half (47 per cent)
Almost one in five parents say they survived home-schooling thanks to coffee.
of Australian coffee drinkers reaching for a brew within the first hour of waking up. One in four said during periods of lockdown, they savour their coffee time more than ever. And finally, 23 per cent of those surveyed reported that during periods of lockdown, going out to get a takeaway coffee has been a pleasant outing or ritual. With international travel on
hold, Jamaica Blue is attempting to satisfy wanderlust with their blends, introducing three new coffee blends throughout the month of October, inspired by Tanzania (blackcurrant, raisin and dark chocolate), Papua New Guinea (peach, apple and hazelnut), and Honduras (black cherry, walnut and cocoa nibs.) That’s arts and entertainment Design Canberra 2021 cancelled Craft ACT have regretfully made the decision to cancel the 2021 DESIGN Canberra festival slated for November following an extensive process of deliberation. The full 2021 festival program has been rescheduled to November 2022, with an artistfocused support program to run this year in its stead. Craft ACT CEO Jodie Cunningham said the difficult decision to postpone this year’s festival was made due to continued uncertainty surrounding public health restrictions. “The essence of DESIGN Canberra is about connection, community, exploration and activation of our city and, given the extended lockdown and the ongoing uncertainty in the coming months, we believe moving the 2021 Transformation
programming to next year will ensure that the festival will run to its full potential in 2022,” she said. With DESIGN Canberra representing one of the largest concentrations of art sales for the region each year and more than 520 local artists impacted by the cancellation, Craft ACT has announced a program that will be presented on 5-28 November to support local artists and the Canberra community. Titled Design Canberra presents Nurture, the program will include creative workshops (online and in person), online studio tours and interviews, an online art auction, a sketchbook challenge, professional development workshops for artists, a music event that celebrates Craft ACT’s 50th anniversary and some public art commissions. Cunningham said the Nurture program draws on the well documented benefits of creativity to promote wellbeing and is aimed at supporting Canberra artists. “The program is specifically tailored to focus on the wellbeing aspects of creativity, making and crafting as tools for health and recovery, and as an antidote to the stresses brought about by the pandemic,” she said.
Summernats green lit for January 2022

A staple of Canberra’s events calendar, the 34th iteration of the Summernats street car festival will roar back into Canberra for the first time in two years come January 2022. It is on track to be Canberra’s first major post-

COVID event. According to festival organiser Andy Lopez, “there is absolutely no reason why Summernats shouldn’t happen” at EPIC in January 2022. The declaration of intent by Summernats organisers to blaze the trail for major events in Canberra came in response to the ACT Government last week releasing their ‘pathway’ out of lockdown. The document signalled large-scale events would re-enter the equation come late November to early December this year. The annual four-day car show usually attracts thousands of visitors to the ACT but was cancelled for the first time this year due to COVID concerns. Mr Lopez said while border restrictions may prevent some interstate visitors from attending, Summernats would be able to go ahead. “The event is ready to run and to run in a COVIDsafe format,” he said. “It will be similar to previous years, but it will be different.” It’s expected that density limits will be enforced at key areas around Summernats for both indoor and outdoor events. Mr Lopez said throughout the pandemic, he and his team have liaised with the various relevant ACT Government bodies, including the Chief Minister’s office, to ensure the event could go ahead “when conditions were right”. “The right conditions are coming, and the work needs to ramp up now so we’re ready to go in January,” he said.

Positive Poster Lab inspires joy Gungahlin Arts’ Positive Poster Lab is a new initiative inviting people to slow down, connect and stay creative by making a poster with the message that they most need to hear. Local artists Sally Holliday and Tom Campbell have created a series of prompts and video tutorials - available on the Belco Arts website and the Positive Poster Lab Instagram - to get people started with the creative process and tap into the benefits that artmaking has for mental health. Poster makers can be inspired and share their work on the project’s Instagram page @PostivePosterLab until the end of the year. The project is open to everyone – from professional artists to those who haven’t picked up a pencil since primary school. All that’s needed are some basic materials from around the house and a commitment to spend a few minutes
engaging with a sense of play. For those who need a little more inspiration, the artists will be running a free virtual working bee on Sunday 17 October 10am-11.30am where participants can log in for a live making session. Gungahlin Arts programs officer Michele Grimston said the project serves as a reminder that “we’re all going through tough times at the moment, and that we have a lot of power to collectively support each other too”. “Stop by and you might just find a message that will help you get through the day – or share your poster - it might be the one thing that someone else really needs to hear right now,” she said. The positive Poster Lab project will run until 31 December 2021. For more information, and to register for the online working bee on 17 October, visit belcoarts.com.au/positive-poster
Now streaming Free Guy (M) In the online open-world videogame Free City, Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a non-playable character who goes about his routine life as a bank security guard. One day, Guy is distracted by a programmer’s Avatar as Molotov Girl, causing him to go against his programming and pick up a pair of glasses that reveal to him he is inside a videogame. 1999’s The Matrix is a masterpiece that blended Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey with the zeitgeist of anxiety felt with the new millennium looming. As an action thriller, The Matrix asked audiences to wake up and question their reality. Free Guy does the same thing, albeit in the wrappings of a comedy; Reynolds’ affable but slightly unhinged Guy slowly awakens to his surroundings as the ‘chosen one’ with all the
helpings of modern-day CGI. Guy is essentially immortal, taking a lot of punishment as he levels up through the game counter to his programming. In the real world, programmers Millie (Jodie Comer) and Walter (Joe Keery) strive to find their original game code within Free City to prove their intellectual property stolen, and perverted by, corporate head Antwan (Taika Waititi). Antwan has altered Free City for his own capitalistic gain, so the pair must strive to save their labour of love. Verdict: A very fun look at life through the lens of a videogame with more than enough ‘Easter eggs’ for gamer fans. 3 stars. Free Guy is now available on Disney+. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

history. It was a period that saw two world wars, the decline of the aristocracy, the rise of women’s suffrage, social reform, miner strikes and the colour and excitement of the 1960s. It also saw the dominance of political figures such as Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, and the rise of cultural icons like the Beatles, James Bond and J. R. R. Tolkien. In this sixth and final volume of his History of England, Ackroyd marvellously captures the spirit of the age and provides fascinating insights into the main events. An impressive and very readable history.
Although it deals with events from over 150 years ago, Kate Moore’s The Woman They Could Not Silence still has relevance today, especially in light of recent events in America. Elizabeth Packard was an ordinary housewife and mother of six, until she attended a Woman’s Rights Convention in 1848. Inspired by the talk of woman’s rights, Elizabeth began voicing her own opinions
on politics and religion, much to the disdain of her preacher husband who warned her after one disagreement, “I shall put you into the asylum!”. True to his word, he had her declared ‘slightly insane’ and committed to the Illinois State Hospital. Once there, she found other lucid women who had similarly been incarcerated, and embarked on a ceaseless quest for justice and freedom that was to have profound effects around the world. Told with a novelist’s flair, this well researched story is both enthralling and confronting. Highly recommended.

Salvos Online: your op-shopping fix for lockdown For those who haven’t heard the fabulous news, Salvos has an online op shop as of May last year - although it’s more like an op-megastore, with about 60,000 items listed and 1,700 new items added per day on average. Although the project has been in the works for a while, Salvation Army spokesperson Wendy Hateley said the website’s launch was fast-tracked because of the pandemic. “All the reasons to shop second-hand still stand true during lockdown. One hundred per cent of profits from any Salvation Army stores are put back into our programs, whether that be for domestic violence refuge, homelessness shelter, food distribution, natural disaster relief, or alcohol and drug rehabilitation. That is where your money is going when you shop from us.” From Victoria to WA, 220 of Salvos physical stores are listing their products online, separating their online presence from other major Australian op shops that mostly stick to listing vintage and valuables. “So far, we have sold 115,000 items through the online store since its beginnings in May 2020 and have shipped 92,000 orders to customer doorsteps across the nation,” said Ms Hateley. An avid lover of all things second-hand, CW fashion and beauty editor Anja de Rozario had to get onboard. After purchasing multiple packages from Salvos stores all around Australia, here are some pros and cons she found of shopping Salvos through the net.
CONS Be mindful of delivery during lockdown. While click and collect is available for areas not in lockdown, here in Canberra ordering for delivery is our only route. Salvos Online doesn’t provide the option to leave packages unattended, or to select your delivery time, so shopping can
be difficult if you are an essential worker. Luckily for most, you can still get your opshopping in while stay-at-home orders last. With post offices also restricting their hours, my packages made several trips up and down the coast before I could direct a select few to my parcel locker. Thrifty nine-to-fivers beware! The search filters could use some work. Salvos Online have made some great developments in the past year, including an array of options to filter by size, style, material, etc. However, straying outside of the given filters can result in some digging (arguably in true op-shopping manner). If you were to search for a universally-flattering ‘wrap dress’ for example, the option to filter by size becomes unavailable. You can still filter for price and condition though, and many of the items listed are brandnew with the tags still on! I also recommend browsing via your laptop, as the website tends to lag on phones. Perhaps an app is on the horizon?

PROS
The Salvos launched an online op shop, allowing Aussies to continue to purchase their pre-loved goods during lockdown, including these outfits worn by Anja de Rozario.
Packaged with gratitude. The Salvos staff mailing items were incredibly kind and grateful for the support during the pandemic. I received multiple handwritten thankyou notes, and personal calls to make sure the items got to me okay. The clothes I ordered were well-packaged and clean, and actually smelt better than in physical op shops! Postage is affordable. Regardless of where in Australia you purchase from, the postage is wonderfully affordable. Regular post is only $5.50, or $7.50 if you want it express. With so many online shopping websites trying to catch us out with shipping prices (you know who you are), reasonable postage must be nodded to. It’s all there. Everything you love and miss about op shopping shines through in Salvos Online.
There are plenty of curated gems, as well as true op shop prices, and hidden treasures to search for in all the well-known op shop goldmines – Men’s Section, Sleepwear, then bric-a-brac, amiright? Recycling is good for all. “If you have five spare bucks and you want to help somebody out, then stick it in a donation tin, but if you need to purchase something with that money, you are better off looking at an op-shop … ,” said Ms Hateley. “Whoever is purchasing from an op-shop is recycling unwanted belongings, and any form of recycling is good for our environment and our community.” Visit Salvos online store at salvosstores.com.au canberraweekly.com.au

Local sneaker brand plants five trees for every pair sold A Canberra-based sneaker company has pledged to plant five trees for every pair of sneakers sold during the month of October, furthering the vocation of bright young founder, Katherine Cymbalak. The pledge is part of the Grow Your Impact initiative, which supports smaller, eco-friendly brands that give back, and BLAC Sneaker Co has aimed to give with both hands since the company’s early stages. “My vision for BLAC was to make a positive impact, not only on the environment but also across society – a balance between sustainable fashion and supporting the community around us,” said Ms Cymbalak.
Her business works to take slow fashion to the next level, crafting shoes out of what Ms Cymbalak calls the “underdog of fabrics”. “Hemp has been used to make rope for countless years because of its durability and strength. As a fibre, it’s difficult to break, so making fashion from hemp means your clothes last longer, but also is incredible for the environment in other ways. “Hemp can rejuvenate soil, drawing out toxins. It grows faster than other crops, which means reducing the impact of deforestation. It helps clean up the water, as less pesticides used means less chemicals in the waterways impacting wildlife downstream.”

BLAC aims to be the necessary future of clothing companies in more ways than one, donating two per cent of their annual turnover to charity, and exclusively working with BSCIcertified suppliers, which protects the fair treatment of workers. “Businesses need to take responsibility for having the power to make or break communities, because they operate in them,” said Ms Cymbalak. “Their employees and customers face the ramifications of poor business practices. “It’s a moral duty of care. We need to protect our surroundings for the future. “The best thing customers can do is vote with their wallets and keep asking questions. Not every business is perfect, but if they keep answering those questions, then it’s a positive sign.” Ms Cymbalak is keen to help regenerate the ACT after the 2020 bushfires with this initiative. “Spring is one of the best times to plant trees,” she smiled. “The trees we’ve planted previously were across the Amazon, so I’m excited to get behind something closer to home.” The young entrepreneur holds a fulltime job in business
management on top of running her sustainable sneaker brand. “I found that going into business can have a bigger impact, you can get more people behind you than what I could do volunteering.” Ms Cymbalak maintains that making moves to live and shop sustainably is not only kind, but brave. “Courage links to trying new things and taking a step forward where not many others have. I want to be a part of a world that rewards that,” she said. “I hope to expand to many types of hemp clothing, but at the moment we’re sticking with shoes. “We hope that we can work towards also contributing to cleaning up the ocean. That’s the next step that we’re looking at. “Currently, the future lies in expanding more on hemp, exploring its benefits. Understanding what slow fashion really means.” On top of all her endeavours, Ms Cymbalak is expecting her first child. “We want a greener future for all of us, including our future bub.” - Anja de Rozario

Discover the medicinal plants in your garden We’re surrounded by herbs, whether it’s the ones we cook with or the weeds growing in our garden and parks. These humble plants can do some remarkable things.
How do herbs work? Herbs are imbued with the ingenuity and intelligence of nature. Plants evolve over millennia to efficiently occupy specific ecological niches. Factors like the climate and the abundance of nutrients and moisture in the soil all influence the properties of a plant. The sheer variety of these ecological niches goes a long way to explain their diverse properties as well as the benefits these plants can offer. Thanks to modern herbal medicine, we now can analyse the ‘active ingredients’ in herbs to better understand their uses and
efficacy. For example, we know turmeric is rich in curcumin, a remarkably powerful antioxidant which can relieve inflammation and help treat many inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. As well as relieving inflammation, some herbs can relax and help you get a good night’s sleep (such as chamomile, hops, mugwort or valerian) they can nourish an exhausted nervous system (withania, oats, ginseng or liquorice) or repair damaged tissues (yarrow, arnica, calendula and golden seal) and many more things! So, venture out into your garden and see what may be waiting to be discovered. Let’s start with dandelion, the quintessential lawn weed with cheerful yellow flowers and the beautiful delicate puff ball of seeds that you blow into the air to make
a wish. Dandelion is one of my favourite herbs for supporting healthy liver function. Among other things, dandelion has a beneficial effect on cholesterol and can help regulate blood sugar. Other very common lawn weeds with healing properties include white clover (used to treat fever, coughs and colds) and plantain (for inflamed skin, insect bites and coughs). What about the bushes in your garden? You might have some rosemary which, like many culinary herbs, is fragrant, meaning it’s full of volatile oils and a clue to the healing properties within. Whilst rosemary can boost memory, alertness and focus, other common herbs like lavender help with anxiety, stress, insomnia, and thyme is one of my favourite cough remedies. We’re still just scratching the
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL HOLISTIC WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA LIVEWELLNATURALLY.COM.AU
surface. Other common weeds include the prolifically growing violet, a superb remedy for anxiety, and chickweed, commonly used in ointments to treat skin irritations like eczema – the list goes on. Next time you’re in your garden or local park, take a moment to consider and explore the pharmacopeia that surrounds you. Before taking any herb, always talk to a qualified herbalist or other trusted health professional to determine what is appropriate.

When they moved in, the 1000 square metre block had a 69 square metre house with some redhot pokers and two fruit trees. The house has since been extended to a modest and energy efficient 100 square metres. The couple selected the block for its generous northerly aspect, perfect for comfortable living and growing lots of produce. Fiona has a permaculture background, including teaching alongside permaculture cocreator, David Holmgren in Victoria. She has also taught sustainability at Merici College in Braddon for some years. More recently, Fiona was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2020 to investigate urban farm ventures that provide vocational pathways for aspiring food growers. Since 2013, Fiona has been growing and selling delicious pesticide-free micro-greens, for weekly delivery to up to 30 local restaurants and cafes, when the ACT isn’t in lockdown. Fiona explained that their micro-greens are grown in organic soil (rather than hydroponically), 30
canberraweekly.com.au
which means their shelf-life, flavour and nutrient content are outstanding. Up to 20 varieties are available at any one time. Fiona said that it takes anywhere from six to 14 days from sowing to sale, depending on the time of year. Excitingly, producing the microgreens is a no-waste endeavour – the trays are reused, and the soil is composted. The micro-greens and any seasonal vegetable seedlings are propagated in two well-maintained glasshouses at the back of the property. Fiona waters them by hand as it gives her better control of how much water the plants get and where it lands, which equates to higher quality plants. The micro-greens are covered with frost cloth overnight during winter for extra protection. The property is currently home to 54 fruit trees, multiple beehives, chickens and rabbits. Michael takes care of the fruit trees and beehives, and Fiona manages their micro-green enterprise during the week. On weekends, the couple potter in the garden together, including in the large vegetable growing area.
Fiona Buining and Michael Wilson of Ainslie Urban Farm.
The family grow enough fruit and vegetables to last them year-round. Fresh fruit is enjoyed 10 months of the year and any surplus is bottled or sold. Vegetables are grown in multiple onemetre-wide beds, which are topped up each season with organic matter, blood and bone, and Organic Xtra fertiliser (qldorganics.com.au/ qld-product/organic-xtra). The resident rabbit tractor is put to work, with ‘workers’ devouring any leftovers and weeds, turning the soil and leaving ‘nutrient deposits’. The beds are also tested and treated each year for any deficiencies. When I visited in winter, there were over 17 varieties of winter vegetables growing and thriving in the garden, which Fiona says we need to plan well ahead for. Fiona uses a planting calendar developed by Joyce Wilkie from Allsun Farm Gundaroo. Two of the beds are covered by tunnel houses, which keeps plants at least 5 degrees warmer. Watering is done by hand as needed during the cooler months and via sprinkler irrigation during summer. Any garden waste is recycled using open-bay and insulated tumbler composting systems, as well as via a worm farm.

COOK 2614
hot property | recent sales
Region Belconnen Median house price $880,000* Cook is cooking! This popular Belconnen suburb, like many across Canberra, has seen an explosion of growth in recent months. Ray White Canberra’s Phyllis Tidmarsh says Cook is seeing lots of interest, with a changing demographic and tightly held properties. A proud Cook resident and an expert on the area, having sold more than 150 properties in the suburb, Tidmarsh says it’s no surprise it’s a popular place to live. “I think the convenience of Cook is fantastic,” she says. “We’re so close to so many arterial roads; seven minutes you’re in the city. “You’ve got the Jamison Plaza [close by], a lot of people can leave their cars at home and just walk.” With families making up a large proportion of the people wanting to buy into the area, Tidmarsh says they’re attracted by the array of local schooling options. “We’ve not only got Radford and St Francis Xavier – private schools that are very sought after, then

you’ve got the public schools, Aranda Primary School and Macquarie Primary School.” Part of Cook’s charm is no doubt its local shops, popular with residents of surrounding areas as well, who come for the café, the bar and the grocer, and stay for the community spirit. As much as Cook sounds like a more urban suburb close it the city, it’s also uniquely Canberran in that it sits adjacent to nature reserve. It’s just a short walk to Mount Painter, where residents can be found jogging, walking and visiting the horses in the paddocks. “You drive down Bindubi Street, you’d think you were in the country actually,” says Tidmarsh.
“Not to forget those who love the outdoors. I walk up Mt Painter regularly – the views from up there are just magnificent. “We’re very lucky.” *Source: poptrack via realestate.com.au

9 BRYAN HUDSON STREET MACGREGOR
Whether you're downsizing, a first home buyer or upgrading from an apartment, this one must be on your list. All living areas have north orientation which assisted hugely with the 6 star energy rating. The north facing lounge room, second living area/ study (or bedroom four) and master bedroom are filled with amazing sunshine in winter. The open plan design ensures that wherever you are in the living areas, you can see the side and back gardens. The kitchen is the hub of the home, providing the cooks with plenty of sight access to children playing in the home. The flexibility of the floorplan is enhanced with a large multipurpose indoor room easily adapted as bedroom four, a study or a second living area. Smart thinking right from the beginning has ensured that none of the bedrooms share adjoining walls. The home has been well maintained. There is very little for the new owner to do, as there is no mowing required on this site, and children's play areas are very close by. EER 6.0 New Listing

ULURU My visit to Uluru was one of the most majestic places I have ever visited, with the incredible sunset and the burnt orange landscape. My experience with the indigenous culture was such an enlightening experience.
KANGAROOS I am still fascinated by the kangaroos I bump into; they were jumping everywhere. I was told never get too close to a kangaroo, that’s a fight a kangaroo would definitely win. It’s interesting to find a few kangaroos grazing in the afternoons in the reserve near my home.
NATIVE FLORA Having a professional background in phytotherapy, naturopathy and plant-based medicine, I’ve been enchanted by Australia’s native flora. The shapes and coloured flowers have brilliant anti-ageing and hydrating properties. No wonder the Indigenous people have been using them in their medicines for thousands of years.
My favourite things
Teresita Daroca Capell Spouse of the Ambassador of Peru President of ASHOM After almost six years in Canberra with my husband, the Ambassador of Peru in Australia, we will conclude our duties here in November. As a member of the Association of Spouses of Heads of Diplomatic Mission (ASHOM), I assumed the role of president of ASHOM last December. I speak Spanish, Catalan and English. I am nutritionist, specialising in genetic nutrition, have a Master of Nutrition and Health, and am waiting for my graduation in Master of Phytotherapy this year at the University of Barcelona. An international accredited yoga instructor, I’m also happy to put a smile on people’s faces, especially children, and contributed to the Canberra Hospital Foundation to help sick children. During my husband’s posting, we have had the opportunity to visit many places across Australia. I have always been touched by the generosity and kindness from many Australian friends, we have been fortunate to experience wonderful warmth and hospitality.
BEACHES I was amazed by the magnificent and extensive beaches in Australia. I love feeling the sea breeze on my face and walking to the seashore. Looking towards the horizon, I could feel my birth country, Spain, closer to me. When I return to Barcelona and look to the horizon, I will certainly feel Australia closer to me because I will carry all those memories in my heart.
MY MATES The friends I’ve made in Australia will be my most cherished memories. Australian people have this natural warmth and friendliness that makes it so easy to make new friends and meet new people. Australia has this special multiculturalism that allows you to immerse yourself amongst different ethnicities while still being able to find and connect with people of similar backgrounds.
