One of the silver linings for me in lockdown has been a reawakened appreciation of the simpler things in life. A smile on a loved one’s face. Shared laughter over something silly. The scent and sight of a rose in bloom. Bringing the washing in off the line on Sunday, I could almost smell the sunlight captured in the threads of the cotton shirts and sheets, the freshness soothing my weary soul. Taking time out to rest in dappled shade on the back deck, I noticed just how bright the fresh new spring leaves overhead were as they shimmered against a cloudless azure sky. The promise of new life bringing joy to my heart. Preparing some exotic new dishes with loved ones was a simple pleasure multiplied when we sat down to share the delicious fruits of our efforts. The flavours tantalising our taste buds, the food sating our appetites, and the experience nurturing our relationships. Grateful for my plateful. Reasons to be grateful this past week include booking a spot in my first face-to-face yoga class in months, fresh pineapple, sharing utterly delicious gourmet meals from the #BeInspired Vietnamese home recipe kit (inspired by Mark Jensen of Sydney’s renowned Red Lantern restaurant and delivered to the CW office last Friday), sun-dried washing, and lockdown ending ...

ACT retailers ‘relieved’ to welcome back customers Canberra’s non-essential retail outlets will be permitted to reopen from tomorrow, Friday 22 October, when stores will be allowed to operate under a one person per four square metre rule. ACT businesses providing essential retail – hardware, pet stores, etc., - operating under a click-and-collect or click-and-deliver model can also reopen their doors from this Friday at one per four square metres. The ACT Government earlier this week made the announcement that non-essential retailers could reopen from 11.59pm Thursday 21 October; with that step on the roadmap out of lockdown originally slated for 29 October.

Non-essential retailers in the ACT will be able to welcome customers in store as restrictions ease at 11.59pm tonight, 21 October, to align with rules across the border in NSW. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Owner of Braddon plant store Green Vine, Irene Donoghoe, told Canberra Weekly it will be a relief to welcome customers back in as it’s been difficult for “a lot of businesses” to operate online only. “It will be nice to be able to offer our services and products in person again, which is what we’ve always done best,” she said. Under the one person per four square metre rule, Ms Donoghoe will be able to welcome up to eight customers in her store at once. “That’ll make things a lot safer for people to be able to manoeuvre around,” she said. Being in the business of selling plants, where being able to physically inspect the product before purchase is vital, Ms Donoghoe said reopening to customers will be a boon. “We’ll finally be able to have people choose their own plants,” she said. “With things like plants, it’s quite difficult to take photos and show what they’re like as every single one is different. “Just allowing people to browse properly is very different from looking at a screen; a lot of our customers are excited to be able to see things in person again.” The move followed a change to ACT/NSW border restrictions over the weekend that meant fully vaccinated Canberrans were theoretically allowed to cross the border to Queanbeyan and shop at retailers there while equivalent Canberra stores remained closed. Chief Minister Andrew Barr, however, put the announcement down to the ACT becoming the first

Australian jurisdiction to have double-vaccinated 80 per cent of its population aged 12 and up. “This is not a Kmart Queanbeyan issue; it’s around our vaccination and our entire settings within the ACT,” Mr Barr said. Canberra Liberals Leader Elizabeth Lee said reopening ACT retail stores is a “common sense decision” that should have been implemented as soon as the cross-border travel arrangements were amended on Saturday morning. “This is welcome news for Canberra businesses that sees sensible changes in the way they are able to trade, however, these changes should have come into effect when the cross-border travel arrangements were amended last week,” Ms Lee said. “There is no reason that our retail businesses could not have opened up safely when restaurants, bars, gyms and personal care services reopened for customers last week.” As already announced, the ACT’s public health restrictions are set to again ease further from 29 October. Capacity limits will increase across several industries including hospitality and major events, while food courts in the ACT will also reopen under a one per four square metre model. Additionally, face masks will no longer be mandatory outdoors but will continue to be required indoors. Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

New Green MLAs look back on a year of success Just over one year ago, Canberra elected five new Greens candidates to the Legislative Assembly: two as Cabinet ministers, three to the crossbench. The Greens, the ACT’s fastest-growing party, hold nearly a quarter of the seats (six of 25) and the balance of power for the fourth time – a world first. “From the north of Gungahlin to the deep south of Tuggeranong, every suburb in Canberra has a Greens representative,” said party leader and re-elected MLA, Shane Rattenbury. The five new MLAs – Andrew Braddock, Jo Clay, Emma Davidson, Johnathan Davis, Rebecca Vassarotti – ran social service organisations and recycling companies, campaigned for environmental issues, convened feminist lobby groups, and even performed drag. They were united by their desire to save the planet, make a more caring society, and create a better future. 6

canberraweekly.com.au

And a year on, said Brindabella member Johnathan Davis, the passion and idealism the MLAs had at the start is now coupled with a practical understanding of the Assembly and government, and of how to advance their policies. “We care about the world and a Green mantra of thinking globally, but acting locally,” he said. “[We bring] that same passion to the pothole in the cul-de-sac or the micro-forest around the corner, these community-led projects that the people in our district we represent are passionate about.” The Greens are determined to create a new normal, Mr Rattenbury said; through their partnership with ACT Labor, the “stable yet progressive” government is leading the nation in many areas. “Housing and homelessness is one of the biggest successes of the last 12 months,” said Rebecca Vassarotti, Member for Kurrajong,

whose Ministerial portfolios include Homelessness and Housing Services. The Greens committed to build 1,000 new social housing properties; this year saw $80 million invested in maintenance, build to rent schemes, and the first funding increase for specialist homelessness services in nearly a decade. Emma Davidson, Member for Murrumbidgee, and Minister (among other things) for Mental Health, oversaw the much-needed support during lockdown, while mental health funding was increased in the last budget. “We all feel like it’s been a big year,” Ms Vassarotti said. “We’ve achieved a lot, but we’ve only just started. We’ve got a lot of work to do. - Nick Fuller This is an abridged version; for the full version, visit our website.

Glasgow futile without big emitters Regardless of whatever position the PM decides to take on zero emissions, the Glasgow summit is shaping up as a farce. Three of the four big emitters have no intention of signing up to zero emissions by 2050 or whatever percentage Boris Johnson and Joe Biden come up with and foist on the rest of a feeble Western world. The big emitters are: China, with 30 per cent of the world’s emissions, 50 per cent of its coal fired power stations and building another 127 before 2025; India, with seven per cent, who desperately wants to bring 300 million people out of poverty and needs cheap reliable coal fired power stations to do so; and Russia, with six per cent, whose leader, Vladimir Putin, is raking in a fortune selling gas to the Western Europeans who cannot get enough reliable energy as they have invested too heavily in wind and there is no wind at present. There’s not much those responsible for the remaining 57 per cent of emissions can usefully do if the other 43 per cent won’t play. The Germans, since 2012, have gotten rid of their nuclear power and are now dependent on

Russian gas. The British “rely” on wind for 40 per cent of their energy needs. Indeed, the only country in Western Europe that has handled this well is France who built nuclear power stations in the 1970s and 1980s, thus ensuring 75 per cent of their energy comes from nuclear power – and with no accidents. What is occurring in Western Europe now is just a forerunner of what will occur to the Western democracies unless we make sure we do not get rid of reliable 24/7 baseload power like coal and gas until such time as the new technologies are proven to work. We still cannot store solar or wind power after 20 years of trying to work out a way. Our PM, by ruling out nuclear power and not including it in the mix, has not only made it pretty much impossible for Australia to ever get to zero emissions (not that it matters much as we account for one per cent of the world’s emissions and have the second best record in the world over the last 15 years when it comes to actually reducing emissions rather than just talking about it), he has

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

also probably destroyed his chances of winning the next election. Why vote Liberal – now Labor/ Green lite – when you can vote for the real thing? In the next few years, China will still be powering ahead with cheap, reliable coal, increasing its emissions in the process, and monopolising the production of solar panels and wind turbines (it already produces 70 per cent of global supply). Any targets the West produces out of Glasgow will do nothing to help reduce emissions overall. We will not get anywhere near the goal of only a 1.5 per cent increase in global warming and almost certainly will be inflicting a catastrophic amount of unnecessary pain on ourselves in the process. Braddon Centrelink to close within weeks The Braddon Centrelink – the only shopfront in the Inner North / Civic – will close in December, much to the disappointment of Labor MP Alicia Payne, Member for Canberra, who campaigned earlier in the year to keep it open. More than 1,100 people signed Ms Payne’s petition to ‘Save Braddon Centrelink’ from being sold when its lease runs out in February. But last week, Services Australia announced the Braddon Service Centre would close, and be merged with the Gungahlin shopfront. “There has been zero community consultation around this decision and zero consideration about what this means for users of the Braddon shopfront,” Ms Payne said. The move, she argued, will force vulnerable Canberrans to travel to Belconnen, Woden, or Gungahlin to access face-to-face services – a cost that would be too much for some JobKeeper recipients. Services Australia general manager Hank Jongen said the decision was made because customer demand had fallen by 40 per cent since 2016, as Braddon changed from an area with a high level of community housing, to a shopping and food precinct with new residential apartments. Light rail can now take customers who would have previously visited the Braddon office directly to Gungahlin, while many people use online services. Ms Payne urged Canberrans to keep signing her petition, and to write to Minister Reynolds and ACT Liberal Senator Zed Seselja to express their disappointment. “I will not take this decision lying down,” she said. “I will continue to fight to save Braddon Centrelink.”

news Anti-Poverty Week on now The poor, it has been said, are always with us – but if we act, insist the organisers of Anti-Poverty Week (which began on Sunday), we can solve this problem, and give our fellow citizens a better life. That message is particularly important this year, as the city reels from the shock of the pandemic and the twomonth lockdown. During Anti-Poverty Week, ACTCOSS CEO Dr Emma Campbell and Woden Community Service CEO Jenny Kitchin asked Canberrans to “reflect on and discuss the poverty and disadvantage on our own doorstep, and what they can do to make a change”. Canberra is one of Australia’s most prosperous cities, but 9 per cent of Canberrans, some 38,300 people, live below the poverty line; 9,000 of them are children. Dr Campbell encouraged the

public to ‘Take 10 to Talk About Poverty’ – watch a brief video about poverty, and discuss the experiences of those in the community. There are also youth art competitions, an interview with social researcher Hugh Mackay, and the Carillon and Telstra Tower have been illuminated in blue to symbolise a brighter future for children living in poverty. The public can donate through Hands Across Canberra, an independent philanthropic community foundation that works with more than 300 local community organisations that help vulnerable people. Its motto: ‘Give where you live’. “There is need here,” CEO Peter Gordon said. “There’s a lot to be done, and we can all get it done if we get involved. There’s no need for people to be left behind.”

Local man cycles for sick kids Mark Knowles was never your average lycra-wearing cyclist, nor did he set out to be a community activist. When he heard about the Great Cycle Challenge (GCC), and the 79,000 riders raising funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute, his simple thought was, “Win-win. Maybe I’ll get a little healthier and help other people while I’m at it.” 3,000 kilometres and $14,000 raised later, if you ask Mark whether he’s an “active activist” his response is succinct. “Nah.” He and his peloton wearing their pop art GCC jerseys are a familiar sight to those who frequent the shared path around Lake Burley Griffin, raising awareness for the cause. This year, his daughter Ashley is electing to join him

on the trail, while three months pregnant with Mark’s first grandchild. This fresh motivation is inspired, sadly, by Mark’s own battle with bowel cancer, then liver cancer. “I’m hoping the research done today will help kids like my grandchild in the future. “I’ve had a childhood. I enjoyed it without any disease or complications. I want all children to have that experience, not have to put up with cancer and treatments, pokes and prods and isolation. Some of these kids still come out with a smile on their face. Let’s end the suffering.” If you want to participate in GCC or to donate, visit greatcyclechallenge.com.au - Anja de Rozario

From Monday 25 October, dedicated school bus routes will resume as more Canberra students head back to school. Deputy Director-General of Transport Canberra and City Services, Ben McHugh, said 230 dedicated school services will be reinstated as on-campus learning returns to Canberra.

The new timetable will see 4,523 services delivered on weekdays, 1,753 services on Saturday and 1,205 services on Sunday. The ACT Government would like to remind riders the safety of passengers and drivers is their number one priority, and to please follow the Covid-Safe guidelines.

Thwarting the wasp queen Spring is the season when the European wasp queen builds her nest. As the weather warms and more people exercise outdoors, Canberrans could be stung over summer – but the ACT Government is trialling a new program to trap queens before they can build nests. Queen bait stations have been placed at Molonglo River, Giralang Pond, Kingston Foreshore, Weston Park, Franklin Pond, and Yarralumla Creek. A chemical-free carbohydrate, Vespex from Sundew, lures the

European wasps to the station; the queens are trapped, and then removed from the environment. European wasps often choose picnic and barbecue sites for their nest sites, most commonly in wall cavities, holes in the ground, roof voids, retaining walls, and in conifer trees. You can report European wasp nests and bee swarms to the eWasp hotline on 6258 5551, or via www.ewasp.com.au. You can also download the eWasp app, a GPS mapping tool that lets users take photos and locate wasp nests.

At a glance Kyrgios wins Tennis ACT Player of the Year Local star Nick Kyrgios has been named the ACT Player of the Year at the Tennis ACT annual awards held on Saturday night, while juniors Charlie Camus and Annerly Poulus were also recognised for their outstanding play. The event highlighted the people and groups who were responsible for making it all happen and the many local successes, as tennis in the ACT and region continues to thrive. Camus and Poulus were named the male and female Junior Players of the Year respectively, while Nathan Price and Alun Jones were acknowledged for their coaching performances. Sue Willis took home two awards – the ACT Adult Club Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding 35+ Tennis Senior. Terry Walker was awarded the Volunteer Achievement Award and was given a $5,000 cash prize towards his club, Reid Tennis Club. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was held online, streaming to hundreds of viewers with a range of high-profile special guests such as Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley, Todd Woodbridge, and the ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry.

GIVIT seeking soccer boots clubs, with the Tigers offering him a two-year deal. Hodgson played 20 games this year for Canberra, but the rise of Tom Starling has seen the latter become the club’s preferred starting hooker for the future. Starling recently had his contract extended and upgraded while the club won’t offer Hodgson another contract beyond his current one. If Hodgson was to push to move north, a deal would still need to be brokered by the two clubs on how much of Hodgson’s salary the Raiders would need to cover next season.

Kautai returns to Brumbies Tighthead prop Sefo Kautai has signed with the Brumbies for the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season. Kautai joined the Brumbies as injury cover in March this year, making the first of his five appearances against the Western Force just days after landing in Canberra. The 25-year-old former Junior All-Black previously played Super Rugby with the Chiefs and is currently with Waikato in New Zealand’s provincial competition. Kautai said he enjoyed his time at the club and was excited to return. “I’m really pleased to be coming back to Canberra with the Brumbies,” said Kautai. “I didn’t know what to expect when I came in last season, but the club were just so welcoming to me, and I loved every minute of it. “Working with our coaches, the experienced front-rowers we have has been great for me and my game and I’m just looking forward to getting back to the Brumbies for preseason and doing my best for the club.”

GIVIT is working closely with a local organisation that is supporting newly arrived refugee families and individuals, helping them to settle into their new homes and neighbourhoods during pandemic restrictions. One of the families is a single mother of six children who recently arrived in Australia after fleeing Afghanistan. This woman is on her own and doing her best to set up a life that is safe and comfortable for her family. The mother needs soccer boots to support her children’s love for the game. Having access to these sporting goods will allow the children to get back to what they enjoy, while creating the opportunity for them to join a local soccer group to help them integrate into the community. The organisation is seeking soccer boots in good condition, all sizes between 38.5 – 42. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whatsneeded, search category ‘Sporting Equipment’, location ‘ACT’. Donations can be collected by, delivered, or posted to the organisation.

GOODWIN – PROUD TO BE EXTRAORDINARY

Macmillan, $32.99

One of the greatest fears of growing old is the seemingly inevitable decline in mental agility and function. In How to Keep Your Brain Young, Professor Kerryn Phelps shows how to slow the mental ageing process. In a clear, readable way, she explains how we can keep our brains younger for longer. Using the science of neuroplasticity, she details the fundamentals of a healthy brain and explains how to use simple lifestyle habits to feel sharper, kick out the brain fog and retain mental acuity into old age. A great guide to how we can make the best use of our later years.

Three cocktails in three minutes: WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

It’s not too late to learn a new skill in lockdown (or at least appear as if you did). Wow your guests with your budding mixology talents at your next backyard picnic. The following measurements are for singular cocktails. It took me (a novice) about one minute to mix each drink.

Pineapple mule 50ml premium vodka (Fever Tree recommends Smirnoff for this one) 50ml of pineapple juice Ginger beer, to top up 1 lime wedge Mint sprigs, to garnish Fill a highball glass with ice cubes, then pour over the vodka and the pineapple juice. Add a couple more ice cubes and top up with the ginger beer. Squeeze over and then drop in the lime wedge. Garnish with mint. For a slightly more advanced twist: 50ml premium vodka 50ml pineapple juice 2 pineapple slices A pinch of salt Ginger beer, to top up Long pineapple leaf, to garnish Pour the vodka and pineapple juice into an empty cocktail shaker. Add the pineapple slices and a pinch of salt. Top up with ice cubes. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds, then pour the contents of the shaker into a highball glass. Top up with the ginger beer. Finally, take a long pineapple leaf and slide it down inside the glass to garnish.

Food for thought The latest in foodie news, events and products, with Anja de Rozario.

Canberra Weekly tried and approved the tasty salted peanut products from Ridiculously Delicious. Photo: Kerrie Brewer

CW tried and tasted! A new product range from homegrown Aussie peanut butter brand, Ridiculously Delicious, is now being stocked in independent grocers and health food stores. Founded by food entrepreneur couple, Ben and Kate Dutton,

Ridiculously Delicious has been a staple for those in the know since 2011. Each Ridiculously Delicious product is made with 100 per cent Australian grown peanuts from Kingaroy, Queensland. Right now, the brand is adding peanut butter cookie chips and bars to its existing range of traditional peanut butters and snacks. Our office was obsessed with the Ridiculously Delicious chocolate peanut butter, the perfect blend of crunchy roasted peanuts and rich, dark chocolate. We tried both varieties – the original crunch and organic coconut. Personally, I loved the extra element of coconut on a slice of fresh bread. Also sampled was the Ridiculously Delicious peanut brittle, handmade with golden-roasted peanuts, resulting in

Yes, I like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, but not so much the 650 calories that can come in one coconutty cocktail. A diet gin and tonic holds about 120 calories per serve, making it one of the lowest-calorie cocktails, and makes me feel like a classy lady with her life together when sipping one. For an even fancier touch, Citadelle Gin is fragrant, delicate, and demands attention. Here’s an easy G&T recipe with a fresh twist. Citadelle recommends a 3:1 ratio of tonic to gin, but feel free to adapt to your liking: 1. Chill a large balloon glass 2. Fill the glass with large, clear ice cubes to the top 3. Add 1-part Citadelle Gin 4. Take great care to choose a

ripe, unblemished lemon 5. Cut a peel - and dare to be creative in its cut! 6. Add 3 parts tonic water 7. Express the peel on top of the glass and around the rim and place it gently into your G&T Pairing tip: Enjoy with fresh oysters, which are abundantly harvested in Charente near Château de Bonbonnet, the home of Citadelle. Bonne dégustation!

Canberra Wine District reopens to NSW and ACT On 11 October, NSW lockdown restrictions eased for the state’s fully-vaccinated population, unlocking the Canberra Wine District’s cellar doors to those across the border. ACT patrons received the update 12 hours later that they, too, can enjoy wine tasting in their namesake district, if fully vaccinated. The 33 wineries within 35 minutes of Canberra are, despite their title, mostly situated over the NSW border. A set of regulations have been established for NSW patrons, including carrying vaccination evidence on their person to produce for inspection to police officers or other authorised officers upon request. Aligning with guidelines set by NSW Health, fully-vaccinated NSW customers will also need to

check in and wear a face mask to enter hospitality venues within the Canberra Wine District. Those who are not fully vaccinated cannot visit a hospitality venue except for takeaway. ACT patrons are expected to abide by NSW health guidelines, check in via the NSW app (rather than Check In CBR app), and have their vaccination certificates ready via the MyGov app. “Please be patient with the staff when you visit,” says Canberra District Wine Industry Association coordinator, Fran Marshall. “They’re learning the ropes as they go, just like you.” To find out who’s open this week, visit canberrawines.com. au, and make sure you contact your venue of choice to make a booking, as most places will not be taking walk-ins due to capacity restrictions. - Anja de Rozario

Canberrans can give … but can they sing?

cover story

Calling all fans of The Voice … Tune in to the cangiveday.org.au livestream straight from the AIS on Friday 29 October 5-7pm. Witness a state-wide singing competition, with judges ‘70s music legend Leo Sayer and The Voice alum Lucy Sugerman. From now until 25 October, video auditions are flowing in from Canberrans singing their hearts out to raise donations for the Canberra Hospital Foundation and snag a spot in the finale. The best-of-the-best will perform to win on Can Give Day, as the grand finish to a string of festivities on the day raising funds to thank our healthcare heroes. The winner receives $2,000, a spot in the line-up of the Foundation summer concert 2022, and a mentoring session with Leo Sayer. And it’s not just performers making an impact - if you decide to donate to support your favourite talent, the donation will be doubled. Canberra’s own indie darling, Lucy Sugerman, was only too pleased to get the call to raise donations for frontline healthcare workers. “They’ve been such an important part of getting this beautiful city through a tricky time,” Sugerman said. “Being a part of supporting them is an honour, really. For me it was a no-brainer. “This will be my first time judging … anyone,” she said on stepping out of the limelight and into the judge’s seat. “I’m a very excitable person. I’m like ‘Everyone gets five stars!’ It’s going

to be a challenge to be a bit more discerning, but I’m excited to try.” Sugerman knows exactly what it’s like to be on red-hot centre stage. Although there may be some surprises on who will be the nice judge and who will be the tough judge this time around. “We’ll see how we go,” she laughed. “I just think it’s really cool when people put themselves out there. Opportunities like this are important for feedback. You get that experience, plus helping the community to come together.” With her honest, dramatic, and personal signature style “describes both me and my music” - Sugerman has been open about navigating lockdown’s impact on the creative process. “Oh man, it’s definitely been a lot of time to sit with your own thoughts. I have a lot of thoughts, and feelings. There’s been highs and lows, but what a good time to regroup and figure out what’s important when everything is taken away. “I still haven’t quite figured it out yet, but we’re getting there, and we’re all in the same boat. It’s been a happy time too, because we’re learning to be adaptable and resilient, focus on ourselves and remember what’s important.” She noted that her unfiltered style is standard for her generation and is excited to see what Gen Z is bringing to the competition. “We’re the first generation to

grow up in an era when making music and connecting with people is so accessible. Subsequently, we’re exposed to such a diverse range of voices, and I think that really shapes what we’re creating, how we connect, and how we consume as well. “We’re paving the way for this brand-new era of music.” Sugerman hopes to see that level of diversity in the competition. “I’m really excited to watch all the entries and uncover Canberra’s best and newest and brightest talent.” Her love for the bush capital has steadily grown since cutting teeth on its streets at nine years old. Lucky for us, Sugerman said she’s never dreamt of living anywhere else. “Maturity is realising Canberra is a great place to live. “The city is developing so quickly and in a fantastic direction. All my

Sydney and Melbourne friends say, ‘You should probably move here for your career.’ And I say ‘Nah, I’m good… Do you want to come visit?’ And they say no and I’m like ‘Well, you’re missing out’.” Keep an eye out after lockdown for her brand-new, yet to be announced EP, coming on 18 November. If you want to get involved on Can Give Day, there are plenty of activities to choose from, including a LEGO building competition, tuning into the live radio broadcast from 10am to 3pm on Mix106.3, and of course, enjoying the music with Sugerman and Sayer. “Let’s say thanks to our frontline health staff and help affected families share the love and music!” she said. - Anja de Rozario To find out more, visit canberrahospitalfoundation.org.au canberraweekly.com.au

Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre artistic director/programming manager, Jordan Best, holds a strong sense of optimism for The Q’s 2022 season. File photo: Kerrie Brewer.

The Q ‘full of optimism’ emerging out of lockdown Having just returned to the office after a lengthy hiatus, Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre (The Q) artistic director/programming manager, Jordan Best, is working hard to ensure everything runs smoothly as the venue reopens. “We’re all slowly coming back in and trying to figure out what that means,” she told Canberra Weekly. While the biggest assignment right now is preparing to launch their 2022 season at the end of November, The Q will “gently and slowly” start welcoming patrons back next month with music and wine tasting nights. “It will be a chance for people to come in and listen to some beautiful local music and try our new house wines,” Best said. Then, come December, a host of “incredible” local dance schools will take the stage to do their end-of-year performances. Looking ahead, Best holds a strong sense of optimism for The Q’s 2022 season as it, like so many performing arts venues, looks to rebuild.

30

canberraweekly.com.au

More than half of the shows presented as part of The Q’s 2022 subscription season, the first Best has programmed, will be local productions. “That’s massive for me, to have more than 50 per cent of our program is huge,” she said. “Despite the fact we’re all feeling a bit weird at the moment, I am full of optimism for what 2022 will be.” The season will start in February with an in-house production of comedy musical, Ruthless. “It’s an absolute explosion of joy and humour, it will be a lot of fun, it’s just brilliant,” Best smiled. The program will be rounded out with premium touring works for which The Q will be the only place to see them within “a very large radius”. Music programming will be strong as always with tribute acts covering INXS, Fleetwood Mac and ABBA, through to the Australian Wind Symphony and National Capital Orchestra. “The Q and The B (Bicentennial Hall) are just going to be full to the

brim next year,” Best said. “We said something for everyone this year, but next year there’ll be something for everyone almost every night.” The strain COVID-19 has placed on the entire arts sector has been “heartbreaking” for Best, who prior to taking the reins at The Q was an independent director and producer. “It’s so hard getting a show ready to go on stage,” she said, “So when everything falls apart, that is heartbreaking and very difficult to recover from.” Best stressed the importance of going out and supporting the arts in the coming months as we remerge out of a very difficult stretch. “Get out there and support the arts that we all love so much because we’re hurting and we really need people to show their support by showing up.” - Denholm Samaras

Now streaming The Starling (M) Lilly (Melissa McCarthy) and Jack (Chris O’Dowd) are preparing a nursery for their child. Flashing forward a year, Lilly visits Jack in a residential mental hospital. Struggling to work and keep their house together in her husband’s absence, Lilly is also harassed by a starling in her backyard. Soon a counsellor at Jack’s hospital refers Lilly to an old colleague of hers, vet Larry Fine (Kevin Kline). After several clunkers, it’s easy to forget McCarthy is a good actor. In The Starling, she must balance grief with grounded humour. Forgetting to tend to her own grief, it is the appearance of a territorial starling that pushes Lilly to the edge, forcing her to indirectly seek

help for herself. Larry was once a psychologist, but, due to mysterious circumstances, now works as a veterinarian. Using the starling as a device for metaphor and analogy, Larry attempts to help Lilly recognise and move through the stages of her grief. Jack, meanwhile, chooses to suffer his loss alone. Away from his life and wife, he struggles with the choice to attempt to resume some form of his former life or face an unknown future. Verdict: While the movie deals with heavy themes of depression, death and suicide, it is a shame that the tone is off, playing more like a cheesy Hallmark American midday TV movie while struggling to stick the landing of the starling device. 1.5 stars. Jeff Popple reviews three very interesting non-fiction books. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Death Ships by Doug Limbrick Shawline, $22.95

Canberra author Doug Limbrick provides a fascinating glimpse into a little-known aspect of Australian history with his account of the tragic voyage of six large, disease-ridden ships in the 1850s. The discovery of gold in 1851 had a huge effect on the local economy with most of the available workforce seeking their fortune on the goldfields. The wool industry was particularly badly hit, forcing the closure of mills in England. In Death Ships, Limbrick provides a compelling account of the disastrous attempt to send nearly 5,000 emigrants to Australia to overcome the worker shortage. Well researched and very interesting.

Also from a Canberra author is Edith Blake’s War by Krista Vane-Tempest. In 1915, Edith Blake made her way to Cairo as one of 130 Australian nurses allocated to the British Imperial Military Nursing Service. Once there, she nursed soldiers wounded at Gallipoli and was later sent to England to work in a military hospital. In 1918, she was tragically killed whilst serving on a hospital ship sunk by a German U-boat. Krista, Edith’s great niece, draws on her relative’s letters home to bring to life Edith’s story and provide a rare look at the work of Australia’s war nurses. A moving piece of history.

Ronald McDonald House Canberra advertising moment

Join The Red Wig Challenge and step up for seriously ill children This November, you’ll once again be able to take part in the annual Red Wig Challenge, raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Canberra in their work supporting families with seriously ill children. To understand more about the work the charity does and the support that it provides we spoke to the family of little Noah, from Crookwell in rural NSW. Mum and dad, Ali and Adam, welcomed baby Noah to their family at 36 weeks in the Canberra Hospital after a postnatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome. Noah then spent two weeks in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit before heading home. At just four months old, he returned to the hospital for bowel surgery and now at one year old is here again for another surgery. When we asked the family about their experience at Ronald McDonald House, Noah’s mum, Ali, said: “It almost brought you to tears walking through the facility, seeing everything

that was available to our family at such a vulnerable time in our life including being able to do simple tasks such as washing clothes, making a coffee, having a shower, or spending time with extended family. We will be forever grateful that we were able to come and go as we needed so we could still be by Noah’s side when he needed us most.” Dad, Adam, shared: “In such a stressful time, having a place in Ronald McDonald House certainly took away the fi nancial and emotional burden of having to worry about accommodation during Noah’s hospital visits, and instead this allowed us to focus our energy solely on supporting Noah. Having access to the kitchen also meant we weren’t spending time and money on takeaway or cafeteria meals. “We were so grateful we also had a place to take [big sister] Harriet back to play during her visits so we could still spend some quality family time together. Until you are in a situation where you need this service, it is

Eczema-friendly skincare When I tell you that I deal with eczema, I mean that as I am writing this my hands are flaring up like angry little strawberries. Like many of Asian descent, my skin is genetically prone to dryness. It seems every brand and their pet influencer are claiming that their products are ‘recommended by dermatologists’. This is particularly annoying when all you’re trying to do is not burst into an eczematous flare as the weather shifts. Here we have Dr Li-Chuen Wong, consultant dermatologist with over 20 years’ experience, to weigh in on skincare for the eczema-prone.

3 YESES Humectants: “Having eczema-prone skin means there is an inherent skin barrier dysfunction, making it sensitive and prone to dryness,” says Dr Wong. “It’s therefore important to look for ingredients that will repair the skin barrier.” Humectants are lovely little ingredients that attract water to the epidermal layer to help moisturise the skin. They also encourage the

shedding of dead skin cells. You may recognise glycerine and hyaluronic acid as popular humectants. Dr Wong also recommends colloidal oatmeal, an ingredient often used by Aveeno, to protect the skin barrier and provide anti-inflammatory goodness. Prescription skincare for the bad days: For days with nightmarish flare-ups, Dr Wong points the eczema-prone in the direction of a prescription topical steroid, “applied intensively till the skin is clear will be very helpful”. Never be afraid to reach out to your GP! Eczema-friendly skincare brands: “Choose fragrance-free and soap-free body washes, along with fragrance-free moisturisers,” says Dr Wong. Tried and true brands include CeraVe and Aveeno. “For colder, wintry conditions, choose thicker emollients and ointments. For the more humid months, try a lighter lotion that won’t feel so tacky on the skin.” For sunscreen, Dr Wong recommends low-irritant products, labelled “broad spectrum” and for “sensitive skin”. Go for SPF 50 if you can find it and reapply every 3-4 hours.

2 NO’S

‘Anti-ageing’ products and perfumes: “For

eczema-prone skin, ingredients that should definitely be avoided include anti-ageing agents like retinol, glycolic acid and salicylic acid,” says Dr Wong. “These products can be very drying to the skin, triggering an eczema flare.” Stash the essential oils as well, as it’s important to avoid all fragranced products, which are known for being irritants. Be wary of ‘recommendations by dermatologists’: “This popular claim, often used on over-the-counter cosmetic products means very loosely, that a dermatologist has been consulted in some manner during the development of the agent,” says Dr Wong. Meaning that brands can slap on that tagline despite there being no uniform standards on how involved the dermatologist must be, nor any test procedures needed to substantiate the claim. Always keep in mind that sudden changes of weather will typically worsen eczema. Some people’s eczema will flare during the lower humidity winter months whilst others will worsen during hot humid weather. While there’s no cure for this genetic condition, the good news is that nowadays we have much better options to control, treat and clear our eczematous moments. - Anja de Rozario

Top expert tips for buying and selling Buying and selling your home can be a stressful experience for everyone involved. Experienced and respected real estate agent and partner at McGrath North Canberra, Justin Taylor, shares his top tips for buying and selling property, to make for a smooth sailing investment.

BUYING 1. Speak to the bank or broker Mr Taylor’s first buying tip is to speak to the bank or broker to confirm what you can afford and get your pre-approval in place. If you’re making an offer on a property, you must have your pre-approval. 2. Research Make sure you’ve researched in areas you may want to live in and check out as many internet sites as possible, as everything is not all bunched together on one site. “For example, it’s important in the older suburbs around Canberra to check for termite infestations as there’s much more of a risk than in newer suburbs, so really check the pest reports,” Mr Taylor said. “It’s also important to check for unapproved structures. Things like decks and pergolas aren’t a huge issue, but it’s important to have approval for extended living areas and swimmimg pools.”

3. Attend inspections It’s important to form a good knowledge base of what homes are of quality value, and what is overpaying for a home. Attending as many private inspections as you possibly can is a great way to build up that knowledge for yourself. 4. Bid strong When you find a property you really like, and it’s within your budget, don’t be scared to bid strong. Mr Taylor said you’re not going to find bargains in this market, and if you don’t bid strong, you’re just not going to be successful. “When it comes to bidding at an auction, if you set what your max price limit is and it looks like it’s going to reach that, try and land on it before your opposition does. The one who lands on that figure will be the successful one,” he said. “Don’t extend beyond your limit though; don’t get caught up in emotion unless you’ve got reserved savings you can dip into.”

SELLING 1. Home staging When selling, Mr Taylor highly recommends property styling to prepare your home for sale. “My partner Dimi and I use The Look Property Stylists, and if your home is vacant, we thoroughly

Canberra’s most expensive suburbs The acceleration of Canberra’s house prices has been at a historic high, hitting a $950,000 median in August, a significant increase of $250,000 since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. Canberra has experienced the highest property price growth of Australian capital cities in 2021 and sits comfortably as the second most expensive city in the country, after Sydney. Ray White’s latest market analysis, written by chief economist Nerida Conisbee, shows 21 suburbs in Canberra have now reached a median price greater than $1 million, up from just eight in 2020. “Canberra’s price growth has been exceptionally strong and has been one of the strongest in Australia when we look at median prices,” Ms Conisbee said. Griffith, the suburb with the highest price growth, is looking like it could snatch the title of Canberra’s first $2 million median suburb within the next 12 months. Eight of the top 10 strongest performing suburbs are southside – Griffith, Garran, Deakin, Yarralumla, Lyons, Mawson, Pearce and Curtin 40

canberraweekly.com.au

– with Campbell and Aranda the only northside suburbs to make the shortlist. “I don’t see Canberra’s house price growth falling but the big unknown is what the impact will be of the most recent lending changes. It’s estimated borrowing capacity will be reduced by five per cent, so that will slow the market,” Ms Conisbee said. Canberra’s house price growth may seem like a daunting prospect for first-time buyers, and Ms Conisbee said it will be challenging for this demographic. “For first-time buyers, a lot are getting priced out and it’s quite stressful, especially with incentives like Home Builder being withdrawn and investors now back in the market,” she said. “On one hand, the price growth is good for property owners but there’s a big focus being put on affordability, which also has a lot to do with things like supply of properties and planning controls. A lot of that is what keeps Australian house prices high, and that’s why we have an inquiry into housing affordability.”

endorse you style your home,” he said. 2. Add value Minor touch-ups are the best way to add value to your property and get a return on your investment, according to Mr Taylor. Get some new carpet, fresh paint and make sure the home is styled. 3. Pick the right agent Speaking to two to three agents to find one you feel you will work well with, personality wise, and feel comfortable around, is one of Mr Taylor’s best pieces of advice. He said the cheapest option isn’t always the best option. 4. Marketing campaign Mr Taylor believes in a strong marketing campaign to help sell your home. “Don’t skimp on the marketing! I recommend a vendor invest half a per cent to one per cent of the value of the property into a marketing campaign,” he said. 5. Timing According to Mr Taylor, the best time of year to sell is when it suits you! Sellers always think seasonally, but buyers are out all the time. Although do try to avoid selling over Christmas-New Year because everyone’s on holiday and there’s usually a four-tofive-week window when buyers have switched off.

MRKT Property launches new agency MRKT Property is Canberra’s newest real estate agency and according to Principal and Licensed Agent, Jessica Kercher, they’re perfectly positioned to guide you through selling, procurement or leasing. “Whilst we are a new brand, we aren’t new to the industry. Between the other Principal, Justin Ingram, and I, we have 30 years’ experience in real estate – all in Canberra,” Ms Kercher said. “You’ll be dealing with two highly experienced agents with a wealth of knowledge, and we’re backed by a vibrant team.” She said clients will be dealing with both principals directly and they are co-listing all their sales. “You’re getting two agents for the price of one!” To find out more about MRKT Property, head to mrktproperty.com.au.

Government schemes are working: REIA The recent National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC) report has found government schemes targeting first-home buyers are helping young and older Australians enter the market. Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president, Adrian Kelly, has welcomed the findings. He said the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme (FHLDS) and the New Home Guarantee (NHG) have been instrumental for young people attempting to break into the property market. “Since January 2020, the schemes have supported some 22,879 home purchases across the nation, guaranteeing around $1.4 billion in deposit shortfalls. Closing the deposit gap is the major barrier to first-home buyers entering the market, particularly in a fast-rising market and both

the FHLDS and the NHG shave off four years of deposit saving for eligible Aussies,” Mr Kelly said. “Some 58 per cent of all buyers under the schemes were aged under 30, but it also helped around 300 Australians who are 50 and over buy their first home. This is public policy at its best at a time when supply and affordability is so challenging, providing a guarantee – not cash in hand – and putting the onus on the purchaser to meet their loan repayments,” Mr Kelly said. He said continued government incentives for first-home buyers are crucial. The NHFIC report shows the median property price was $397,000 for single applicants under the FHLDS, and under the NHG it was $465,000 with “gender distribution broadly equal across both schemes”.

Strata to be new norm Projections in the 2021/22 ACT Budget suggest three-quarters (75 per cent) of new dwellings to be built in the ACT over the next five years will be strata titled. The properties will consist of units, apartments and other strata titled premises. It is projected 12,263 mediumand high-density dwellings will be built in the next five years; more than 4,000 of them before the end of June 2022. Strata Community Association ACT president, Shelley Mulherin, said strata properties will see a big proportion of infrastructure

spending in Canberra. “Their construction will boost the economy, create jobs and grow the critical strata industry that serves owners, residents and a wide range of industry service providers.” Ms Mulherin said the increased growth of strata properties shows a greater need for the government to address the issues facing the industry, such as: cladding, strata defects, best practice reforms, more detailed COVID guidelines to enable safe property management, and sustainable and energy efficient buildings.

$20m sale in Fyshwick An entire street of industrial assets in Fyshwick has been sold by a Canberra family for $20 million to Sydney buyers, taking advantage of strong interstate demand. The site sits on 11-51 Whyalla Street and houses 22 tenants across 16 industrial units and buildings.

Burgess Rawson Canberra agents Steve Burke and Guy Randell facilitated the sale and said this scale of industrial assets rarely come to market in Canberra. “It’s certainly not the type of sale you see every day, but it just shows the huge demand for this type of investment,” Mr Burke said.

The full moon will spotlight developments in a relationship, especially if it’s your birthday. It’s a good time to research your options regarding your health or that of someone close. This is also the time to dig deep and find the correct information that will help you progress both at home and at work.

You are set to turn a corner in a domestic situation or regarding property. However, you may first need to undergo some tough negotiations at work or in your personal life. Luckily, the sun in scorpio for the next month will ramp up your lust for life and could boost your social life too.

Thursday morning’s aries full moon signals the start of a fresh chapter in a business or personal relationship, and this will be due to changes in health, work or a schedule. Be patient with erratic people and you’ll avoid arguments. If you’re making agreements, ensure you have all the facts.

You may be inclined to act rashly at this full moon, so the better informed you are, the better your outcome, especially early next week when you’re best to avoid a mexican stand-off. domestic matters will also deserve careful focus. You’ll avoid allowing arguments to become battles by basing your plans and decisions on facts.

The sun in scorpio for a month will brighten your outlook. You may experience a surprise change of routine. However, you may need to overcome a hurdle first. Keep conversations on an even keel for best results or intense emotions could lead to tempers. avoid gambling, both financially and emotionally.

This is a good week to consider how you could process your communications better, including paperwork and transactions. The key to progress lies in obtaining key information to do with finances and values. Be innovative and embrace change, but also avoid conflict, as this could escalate to a stalemate.

Thursday’s full moon spotlights your work and health sector. developments will arise quickly, so be prepared to make key decisions intuitively. as the sun enters scorpio, you’ll feel more motivated. consider thinking outside the square about the best way ahead, especially with shared ventures.

The full moon will highlight how to make positive changes both at work and in your personal life. However, you must avoid rash decisions and conflict, as you may discover after a while that a difference of opinion cannot be overcome through reasoning alone, and that you must find a solution another way.

The full moon will spotlight your personal life. The best way forward will involve being even-handed with interactions and communications, so express yourself most clearly and be prepared to negotiate and discuss matters. You’ll find the solution within a personal or domestic matter soon, so be optimistic.

The full moon signals a new phase in a financial or personal circumstance. Take things one step at a time to avoid mistakes. You will gain clarity by using your intuition. This is a volatile time, so avoid contributing to conflict; find peaceful solutions instead, especially with collaborations and joint finances.

The sun in scorpio for four weeks will spotlight your love life, family and creativity. You may also be ready to begin a fresh chapter with a friend, group or organisation. You’ll find ways to move ahead productively. avoid arguments with people you have no option but to get on with for now.

This is a good time to consider how you might reconfigure your savings, investments and expenditures, especially with regard to joint finances. You’ll also feel ready to broaden horizons at work and in your personal life. The more diplomatic you are, the better, as you may discover a new truth. .

WRITING HUT Fortunately, it survived the fires despite the proximity to the trees.

FAVOURITE TREE

Photo Nicola Bowery

This giant ribbon gum inspires every day.

My favourite things

Harry Laing

HEIRLOOM Antique silver bird from Burma (Myanmar). Inherited from a favourite Great Aunt.

Author

Harry Laing is a children’s author, comic performer and poet based in Braidwood NSW. He’s a well-known face in Canberra schools, where he loves teaching creative writing workshops and performing his poems for hundreds of kids. RapperBee – poems to give you a buzz! is his latest book (illustrated by the brilliant Anne Ryan). School carpets, sausages, bees – Harry reckons you can write a poem about anything. As a writer he’s particularly happy to be a role model for boys and is always thrilled with the response he gets from both boys and girls when he tours Canberra schools as one of the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge Ambassadors. Harry lives on 115 acres near Braidwood beside Monga National Park and the Black Summer fires came far too close to his place. Fortunately, the buildings survived and the forest is recovering. He’s looking forward to getting off the Zoom screen and back into schools. 82

The zoo to yourself! 2 options - one of the toughest decisions that you will face!!

The zoo has to remain closed to the general public until 29 October, but Jamala Wildlife Lodge is open to Canberra residents. So here are 2 fantastic opportunities to virtually have the zoo to yourselves (just sharing with 200 animals, staff, security and a few other Jamala guests)!

1. Total Indulgence

Stay overnight and take the Jamala Indulgence Package! Possibly the only time that we will offer this - the zoo to yourselves, a tour PLUS one or more great face to face animal encounters included (like Meet-a-Cheetah, meerkats, rhino, giraffe, lion), FRESH lobster or Wagyu beef with the gourmet dinner and an even better wine list than normal!

This package will be available on the 22nd October.

2. Mere Extravagance Another stay overnight option - our nomal luxury included with a beautiful gourmet dinner, fine wines, a tour and breakfast and you STILL get the zoo to yourselves!! This package will be available on 23rd and 27th October. *Plus interstate guests if borders are re-opened. There are very limited opportunities

for each of these options - go quickly to our website: www.jamalawildlifelodge.com.au for more details.
