Only one month till Christmas! Thanks to extended periods of life in lockdown and restrictions curtailing many pre-pandemic social interactions, I might have dodged Santa’s naughty list this year. Not that I’m terribly naughty, but I’m not always awfully nice, either. Anyway, there’s nothing I especially want; I’m blessed to have good health, enough affluence to live and eat well, and loved ones to spend quality time with. And if the past two years have taught me anything, it’s to appreciate such gifts. Whatever I do spend in the lead up to the festive season, I intend to spend at local businesses that employ local residents, support our community, and have been doing it tough lately. Regular readers will be aware I recently wrote a brief eulogy for my father, who, in a twist of fate, has defied his doctors’ diagnoses and has been transferred from end-of-life care to interim care. He’s not out of the woods, but I might yet see him when I visit this Christmas. Reasons to be grateful this past week include celebrating birthdays with dear friends over delicious shared Indian dishes, the community spirit and generosity of my local Buy Nothing Project group, strong attendance at the Italian Film Festival opening night, new season cherries, a face-to-face group meditation session, and occasional bursts of sunshine. Take care,

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in the City Christmas in the City 2021 kicked off this week, Tuesday 23 November, as Canberra’s CBD teemed with festive and interactive installations and events, including a colourful new Christmas tree. This year’s program includes art installations and decorations in City Walk, a packed month of

performances featuring the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and on-street DJs, and local businesses presenting an advent calendar of offers. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said he’s very much looking forward to an opportunity to celebrate Christmas in a Covid-safe way after a challenging year for everyone.

Christmas in the City decorations are up, including a translucent Christmas tree and colourful, Canberra-inspired banners. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

“There’s something for everyone in this year’s series of events, but the purpose of all of this is to draw more people into the CBD. There’s more life in the city than there was a month ago, and there’ll be even more life in the coming two or three weeks as we head into December,” Mr Barr said. “The range of programs and events are encouraged to attract hundreds and then thousands over the four-week period. As we move out of lockdown, Canberrans will be keen to support local businesses and this will be a key driver of our economic recovery into Christmas and throughout 2022.” Descending upon Braddon will be some naughty elves, there’ll be a Dancing in the Streets event, colourful flags, banners, and a mural, transforming City Walk into a festive wonderland to create a uniquely Canberran Christmas.

“This year we have the biggest Christmas program ever, with something for everybody. This Christmas, the design for the decorations and installations celebrates the beloved natural elements of our city, including our iconic Gang-Gang Cockatoo,” Mr Barr said. “My Christmas tree at home isn’t up yet, but [the City Walk Christmas tree] is pretty good – it’s bigger than the one I’ve got at home.” From Wednesday 1 December, a digital advent calendar displaying the countdown to Christmas will be showing the festive offers from local businesses each day, and the performances and entertainment will run until Christmas Eve. Pop-up bike mechanic making a wheel difference Taking a strategic post in Bowen Park near the heavily used bike path, Simon the Bike Guy’s pop-up maintenance workshop is a flurry of activity every Saturday from 10am to 4pm. A master bike mechanic with a lifelong love of bicycles, Simon Weir’s decision to establish his lakeside workshop was born out of

seeing too many cyclists riding on dangerously neglected equipment. “I constantly hear bikes that are just grinding away into oblivion for no particular reason,” he said. “Things like flat tyres, dry chains, skipping gears, all those qualityof-life things that I wish I could just stop people, hold them up for five minutes, fix it for them and

send them on their way.” For the past six Saturdays, Simon has set up with a slimmeddown toolkit, two heavy duty repair stands, and some replacement parts in his van if required. “Just mid-ride, what needs doing to get it comfortable and safe ultimately,” he said. Performing around 20 to 30 minor odd jobs per session, Simon will tell the client what work really needs doing and offers full mobile services, travelling to their home and doing the work out of their garage. “People have absolutely loved it and it’s turned into a lot of good services where trust has been formed, and that’s what I’m going for here.” His ingenious business model came about after he identified a gap in professional bicycle maintenance in Australia. “I’ve seen this constant

theme of bikes turning up for maintenance that are completely at the end of their tether and every part needs replacing,” he said. Professional workshops can be pricey when people only need minor work done, and your typical cyclist would have no idea how to conduct routine maintenance on their bikes. It’s there that Simon’s pay-asyou-like model taps into a market most cyclists didn’t know they needed until they pass his Bowen Park pop-up. “It’s quite difficult, you wouldn’t charge someone for pumping up their tyres, but they might have valued that, so the gist of this step is pay what you want,” he said. “And if you don’t know, I’m happy to let you know what it would be in a store.” Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

WITH ALICIA PAYNE MP MEMBER FOR CANBERRA

Healthy waterways, healthy city Canberra’s lakes and waterways are a central part of life in the capital. As a child, my favourite thing to do as a treat was to hire a paddle boat on Lake Burley Griffin with my parents. Nowadays, my husband and I love getting out on the lakes in our tandem kayak, getting that unique water level view of the banks and the birds that inhabit them as well as some exercise. My experiences are the norm for many Canberrans. Head out to any Canberra lakeside park or reserve on a weekend and you’ll see families getting together for picnics, children’s birthday parties, and parents teaching their children how to ride bikes and walk the dog. And these spaces have become even more important recently during lockdown. Almost half of our threatened animals and one-quarter of threatened plants live in urban areas. But we are letting many of these assets go to waste, with the health of our urban waterways often fragile. For too long, our rivers, creeks and wetlands have been treated like drains and left to become polluted and filthy. The ACT Government has invested heavily

to improve our waterways, including restoring natural wetlands such as those at Lyneham in place of cement drains and educating the community on ways they can help. The ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment is also busy investigating the state of the territory’s lakes and waterways. Hundreds of community groups across the country are taking action to clean up their local waterways for everyone to enjoy. Here in my electorate groups such as the Molonglo, Ginninderra and Southern Catchment groups, SEE-Change and the Climate Factory work hard to improve and care for our urban waterways and their surrounds. It’s why I welcome Labor’s recent $200 million commitment to fix urban rivers and catchments. If Labor wins government, it will work with these dedicated community groups and local and state governments to regenerate their waterways and catchment areas - restoring precious habitat and creating valuable recreational spaces for local communities. The Urban Rivers and Catchments Program will provide grants for as many as 100

projects – and I will be advocating hard to secure grants for projects in Canberra. Works will include creating wetlands to slow water flow and filter pollutants from stormwater before it reaches our rivers, returning concreted waterways back to their natural state, and revegetation and tree planting. The repaired and restored waterways will, in turn, deliver improvements to water quality and the local environment, provide a much-needed sanctuary for wildlife, improve open spaces for kids and families to enjoy, and create local jobs. Citizen science and education projects for preschoolers and school age children will ensure the good work will be protected and continue for future generations. It’s an exciting commitment which will have real benefit to communities across the country. Labor knows healthy waterways help build a healthy city. This policy will give them the care and protection they deserve - continuing Labor’s strong record of delivering environmental policies which deliver results.

fit the bill

Some 13-year-olds do commit serious crime, Shane Long-suffering Canberra citizens are going to be used as guinea pigs for another social experiment, this time by our Greens Attorney-General raising the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years. All other states and the NT are considering raising it from 10 to 12. The current law is that if a child is aged between 10 to 13 inclusive, they can be charged and convicted of a crime provided the court is satisfied they knew what they did was wrong. Unless it is a very serious offence, children that young are not locked up, and if they are, there are meant to be programs in juvenile justice institutions to help them rehabilitate. The system works. Unfortunately, some young people (usually aged 12 or 13 years but sometimes younger) do commit serious crimes – right up to and including murder. A recent example that springs to mind is the brutal home invasion of Wallaby great Toutai Kefu’s Brisbane home by three 15-year-olds and one 13-year-old armed with machetes. The four were charged with attempted murder. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr is backing

Mr Rattenbury on this so it will become law. This means that if the 13-year-old Queenslander committed the attempted murder in the ACT, he would get off scot-free. I have prosecuted and defended a number of disturbed 12- and 13-year-olds over the years for serious crimes like arson, robbery, and serious assaults. All of them knew what they were doing was wrong. Some came from dreadful homes and were safer in our then juvenile justice institution, Quamby, than they would be at home. I recall the officers at Quamby did their best to rehabilitate them – and in many cases succeeded. Make no mistake, this experiment by the Greens/ALP government will lead to some Canberrans being seriously injured, suffer financial loss, and possibly even death at the hands of young people who will not be able to be prosecuted and, if need be, incarcerated for the community’s safety and for their own good. They may also miss out on rehabilitation. At least in the rest of Australia the age will only be raised to 12. There are a lot fewer 10- and

11-year-olds committing serious crimes than there are 12- and 13-year-olds. Raising the age to 12 has some logic. Nearly all children up to 12 are in primary school and nearly all children 12-plus are in high school. Puberty usually kicks in at around the age of 12, too. Many 13-year-olds are well into high school – Year 8 or 9. I cannot recall anyone I’ve met in Years 8 or 9 who didn’t know right from wrong. Politicians rarely have to personally pay for the consequences of their actions and it will not be Mr Rattenbury and his Greens/ALP colleagues who will suffer the consequences of this move but ordinary Canberrans and, quite possibly, the young offenders themselves. ACT has new fire chief

Peet acquires UC land

Matthew Mavity was appointed the new Chief Officer of ACT Fire and Rescue last week – the Territory’s first homegrown Chief Officer. Mr Mavity joined the service as a recruit almost 25 years ago, and has acted as fire chief since April. Community service motivates him, Mr Mavity said. He served in the ADF and worked in private enterprise before joining the fire service a quarter century ago. He has moved through the ranks as a fire management specialist within the ACT Emergency Service Agency. Mr Mavity was senior incident controller during the 2019/20 bushfires, then, as part of an 18-month Executive Development Program, acted as Chief Fire Officer since April. He said that coming through the service gives him “an intimate knowledge” of the organisation, the

Approximately 15 hectares of land at the University of Canberra (UC) in Belconnen has been acquisitioned by Peet Limited for around $67 million. Peet managing director and CEO, Brendan Gore, said the conditional agreement between UC for the joint land development, announced in April 2016, has been restructured in the acquisition. “This restructured deal has been negotiated on capital efficient terms and allows Peet 100 per cent control of an exciting and innovative project that will be integrated with the broader UC campus masterplan,” Mr Gore said. “The Property has the potential to deliver more than 1,600 residences through a mix of townhouses and apartments and more than 1,000 townhouses

people in it, and of what Canberra needs. Mr Mavity said his first priority was to stabilise the organisation. Many firies were retiring, while the fire service was growing. But the Fire and Rescue service is exceeding the minimum number of people the Enterprise Agreement commits them to recruit, he said. The ACT United Firefighters Union hoped Mr Mavity would “demonstrate the leadership required to overcome the many challenges facing ACT Fire and Rescue”, including the construction and renovation of fire stations lagging behind schedule; machinery and clothing not provided five years after trials; crew increases not delivered; officers underpaid; and a promised education program yet to be developed. The Union said these overdue priorities were urgent.

and apartments across the Option Land.” He said Peet was looking forward to continuing their partnership with UC on the development. “The Property is expected to be delivered over the next 15 years, while the Option Land is expected to be delivered over a five-year period if acquired, providing Peet with a long-term presence in the Belconnen Town Centre growth corridor of Canberra,” Mr Gore said. “The development of the Property is expected to commence during the 2023 financial year and has an estimated gross sales value of more than $1 billion, with a decision to extend the project via the exercise of the option agreement for the Option Land not required until 2027.”

Bangladeshi-born Canberra actress Sadia Nabila stars in Dhaliwood film, Mission Extreme, screening in Belconnen on 4 December. Shot on location at the LED Stage at Academy of Interactive Entertainment, Watson. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

All eyes on Sadia Nabila Canberra’s own Sadia Nabila is set to grace our silver screen once more in the upcoming Bangladeshi action-thriller, Mission Extreme (2021). This will be her second film screened in Australia, the first being her Bollywood premiere, Pareshaan Parinda (2018). Nabila told Canberra Weekly she’s thrilled to finally be catering for both her hometowns at once, with Mission Extreme filmed in her home country of Bangladesh, and to be Xtreme-screened in Canberra on Saturday 4 December. “You feel closer to a project when you’re speaking to your people,” she said. “And I can’t say how excited I am that the movie’s going to be shown in Canberra, which has been my home for nine years.” Mission Extreme is directed by real-life police officer Sunny Sanwar, inspired by several of his lived encounters. “Usually when we watch a film, it takes two and a half hours of our lives and then we leave the theatre,” said Nabila. “With this film, many won’t realise that these incidents are taken from real life. People have really gone through these situations.” Mission Extreme is part one in a duology taking place after the events of hit Bengali film, Dhaka Attack (2017), which Sanwar cowrote. Nabila said she was attracted to the role of police officer, Era, by her power in a male-dominated field. Although in completely different fields, Nabila shares a common drive with her character, that she rode all the way to Dhaliwood. She was just five years old when she first took to the stage. She had always gazed up at the glamorous women on TV, insisting to her mother, and military father, that would be her someday. Nabila made it her mission to prove to everyone, including her small town of Saidpur, that she was meant for the spotlight. “I was such a drama queen,”

laughed the now 26-year-old actress and model. “But I just knew that’s what I wanted to do, and I was blessed that my parents supported me, despite no one in our family being in entertainment.” Nabila started modelling after high school. In 2017, she was the only Bangladeshi contender selected for Miss India Worldwide. With her piercing eyes and unwavering confidence, she walked away with the prize for first runner-up, and an offer for her role in Pareshaan Parinda. Bangladesh’s entertainment industry, known as Dhaliwood, lies separate from India’s Bollywood. Nabila, who also models in Australia, jetsetted between the three prior to the pandemic. Now Nabila is a household name in Saidpur. However, she confesses, there will always be naysayers. “Saidpur was a small city, a lot like Canberra. Everyone knows everyone. “I had people telling my parents, ‘You shouldn’t let your daughter be in media, why are you doing that?’ Questioning my intelligence, this and that. “Particularly as Asian women, the arts career path can be very hard at times. We won’t always get support, from either our families or our societies. “You will have your own doubts about your future too, time to time, because no one knows what is going to happen. “I just want to say to girls like me: the best version of yourself can’t be living someone else’s life,” she said. “Outsiders are outsiders for a reason. You will always have bad feedback, and good feedback. As much as we can, take the good things from others, and put it in ourselves, and discard the rotten. “Once your family sees you following your passion and working hard, eventually they will understand. Just keep on following your heart, and don’t stop. Just keep on going.” - Anja de Rozario

Vinnies opens in Mitchell AMC program up for award Officially opening on Wednesday 1 December, the new Vinnies op shop in Mitchell is getting its final touches just in time for Christmas, and is looking for volunteers to help. Area Manager for Vinnies North ACT, Gary Crowder, said the new store, at 32 Hoskins Street, is an expansion of the Vinnies Warehouse in Mitchell, and was needed after an increase in Canberrans requiring their services during the pandemic. “If we can get everything right, we might do a soft opening hopefully as soon as this Friday [26 November]. I’m excited about the vibe and feel of the new shop and I think it’s quite interesting to see a Vinnies in an industrial area,” Mr Crowder said. “We’re looking to open Monday through to Saturday, so we’re

looking for volunteers for any of those days.” Acting CEO of Vinnies, Michelle Colefax, said volunteers will find the work both rewarding and meaningful, and there’s a role for everyone. “We’re inviting people wanting to help us make a difference to contact us to find out how they can be part of our mission, especially in the lead up to the busy festive season,” Ms Colefax said. “We know these past two years have been especially tough for many of our fellow Canberrans and those around our region and this a perfect time to lend a hand. By volunteering, you get to meet some wonderful people and gain new skills too.” To discover more about volunteering with Vinnies, visit vinnies.org.au

An indoor rowing program for detainees at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) has been announced as a 2021 CBR Sport Awards Finalist. The month-long program was administered by Rowing ACT in March/April this year following a similar program run for veterans and their families in September 2020. Rowing ACT president, Alison Creagh, told Canberra Weekly they felt a similar initiative for detainees could be effective. “It’s really about building community and getting fit and, at the same time, enjoying each other’s company through a shared interest,” she said. The program culminated in the detainees participating as a team in an Anzac Day indoor rowing challenge – the Colgan Cup - where

they achieved beyond Creagh’s expectations. The challenge required participants to row as many instances of 2504 metres as possible in acknowledgement of Anzac Day falling on 25 April. The 12-person AMC team chalked up 70,112 metres; the largest group entry with the highest result across Australia and New Zealand. But it wasn’t just their performance on the ergs that impressed Creagh. The day began with the detainees paying tribute to someone they know or are related to who have either served or are serving our country. A veteran herself, Creagh was touched by the testimonials offered. Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

GIVIT seeks grocery and clothing vouchers As Canberra emerged from over two months in lockdown and students returned to the classroom, the actual impacts of this period started to emerge. As more and more youth workers connected with senior-level students, they discovered that families had been going weeks without income, living well below the poverty line, and in some cases, at risk of homelessness. GIVIT is working alongside education teams across the ACT to ensure that no family goes without the essentials. Many youth workers are also finding that senior students are now struggling with the reality that they may not participate in their Year 10 formal and celebrations. This divide of income leads to severe impacts on youth mental health, self-esteem and can lead to young people feeling ostracised from their peers as they struggle to take part. GIVIT is calling upon generous Canberrans to fund the purchase of essential vouchers for students and their families. Having the extra funds to put food on the table, purchase a new pair of shoes or even allow a student to attend formal will make a world of difference to the lives of many young Canberrans. To donate, visit givit.org.au/ whats-needed, search category ‘Vouchers’, location ‘ACT’. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

McDonald’s Dickson advertising moment

Head to the newly refurbished McDonald’s Dickson, corner Badham Street and Dickson Place, for their family fun day on Saturday 4 December at 11am – or enjoy exclusive offers over the weekend of 3-5 December.

McDonald’s Dickson grand reopening Come one, come all! No need to leave the kids at grandma’s next weekend; there’s loads of entertainment at the grand reopening of McDonald’s Dickson, taking place Saturday 4 December with festivities kicking off at 11am. The golden arches on the corner of Badham Street and Dickson Place welcome you back with oodles of fun for kids, including a jumping castle, a magic show, and even a visit from Ronald McDonald. Come by for a super special meet n’ greet with the clown himself! Escape the weather and climb into the brand new, two-storey indoor playground. Children 14 and under can be the first players to try out the colourful castle, rebuilt for the first time in decades

and ready for a ton of fun. Wave to Mum and Dad from the doublestorey windows. And the party doesn’t stop there – on this day only you can get McGiveaways through a lucky dip of toys, books and more, for kids of all ages. From 10.30am until midnight, Friday to Sunday 3-5 December, McDonald’s Dickson is treating its customers to $2 McCafé coffees, $1 sundaes and cheeseburgers, and hash browns for just 50 cents – deals the whole family can enjoy (limit of four per transaction). “We’re extremely proud and honoured to reinvest into the community by providing better facilities for our customers and our staff,” says restaurant owner, Hani Sidaros. McDonald’s Dickson has been

fitted with brand new indoor and outdoor seating, so whether you’re going for a late-night snack, seeking a study spot with plenty of charging points and free Wi-Fi, or just planning on enjoying the warmer weather, they’ve got you covered. “We’ve given the whole store a facelift from the inside out.” The Dickson team’s number one priority in the refurb was to invest back into the community by creating a smoother restaurant experience all around. That means more kiosks for touch-and-go ordering, dedicated space for McCafé diners, and upgraded

restroom facilities for customers to appreciate. Still more comfortable with contactless pickup? No problem. McDonald’s Dickson has put extra effort into improving their drive-through, keeping pace with the times. Their new “fast forward” drive-through window provides customers with a smooth experience. Still not convinced? Come by and see for yourself. “The staff are excited to welcome back customers into our new and improved family restaurant,” says Hani.

Meatless Mondays

The movement to go meatless one day a week reminds us that we don’t need a handful of people being vegetarian perfectly, rather millions of people doing it imperfectly. Here’s a couple of recipes to help with those baby steps. WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO Joe’s Family Food by Joe Wicks, Published by Bluebird, RRP $44.99, Photography by Andrew Burton.

Indian spiced chickpea burgers Serves 4 400g tin of chickpeas, drained and rinsed 3 tsp shop-bought curry paste (korma works well) Grated zest of 1 lemon 10g coriander, stems finely chopped and leaves roughly chopped 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 80g breadcrumbs 1 Tbsp coconut oil Cauliflower raita 300g cauliflower 150g natural yoghurt Juice of 1/2 lemon 10g mint leaves, finely chopped Salt and pepper To serve 4 burger buns, toasted 4 Tbsp mango chutney 4 lettuce leaves 4 Tbsp shop-bought crispy fried onions 34

canberraweekly.com.au

To make the burger mixture, place the chickpeas, curry paste, lemon zest and fresh coriander in a food processor and blitz until the mixture comes together. If you don’t have a food processor you can mash the mixture with a fork instead. Mix the red onion and breadcrumbs into the chickpeas and shape into 4 patties. To make the raita, shave the raw cauliflower with a mandoline or sharp knife into thin slices and place in a bowl. Mix the yoghurt in a bowl with the lemon juice and mint, season to taste with salt and pepper and fold into the cauliflower. Heat the coconut oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, add the burgers and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown on both sides. Assemble the burgers by spreading the base of the toasted buns with mango chutney, then topping with the lettuce followed by the chickpea patties. Pile the cauliflower raita on top of each burger and sprinkle with the crispy fried onions. Place the bun lids on top and squash down a little with the palm of your hand to serve.

Lemon + courgette puff pastry tart Serves 4 3 courgettes Small bunch of basil Grated zest of 1 lemon 1 clove garlic, crushed Salt and pepper 2 Tbsp olive oil 320g packet of ready rolled puff pastry (remove it from the fridge 15 minutes before needed) 2 Tbsp sundried tomato paste 250g ricotta cheese 20g toasted pine nuts, to serve Preheat the oven to 240°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Peel the courgettes into ribbons and place the ribbons in a large bowl. Finely shred half the basil leaves and add them to the courgettes along with half the lemon zest, the crushed garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, some freshly ground black pepper and the olive oil. Toss everything together to evenly coat the courgette. Unroll the pastry and place it on the lined baking tray. Using the point of a sharp knife, score a line 1cm from the edge all the way round the outside of the pastry to form a frame. Prick the inside rectangle of pastry a couple of times with a fork, then spread the inside rectangle with the sundried tomato paste. Add the courgettes, piling them on top and bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes, or until the courgettes are tinged golden brown and the pastry is cooked through. While the pastry is cooking, mix the ricotta in a bowl with the remaining lemon zest and season with salt and pepper. When the pastry is out of the oven, add blobs of the seasoned ricotta, scatter over the remaining basil leaves and sprinkle over the pine nuts to serve.

Fully fledged 2022 National Folk Festival to return to EPIC Come Easter weekend 2022, the National Folk Festival will return to its spiritual home of Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) for their “biggest iteration yet” after exactly three years away. Over 200 acts will perform across 12 stages spanning EPIC’s substantive footprint, while all the usual food, market stalls, workshops, craft, dance, and art that make the festival special will return. The occasion will not just mark a return to normality for ‘the Folky’ after one fully cancelled festival and this year’s pared-back Good Folk in Queanbeyan. It is, in fact, the Folky’s 55th birthday next year, and 30 years of the festival running in Canberra. The 2022 Folky will mark new Festival Artistic Director Katie Noonan’s first at the helm. Bringing passion, vigour, and a clear vision to the role, Noonan’s first festival will emphasise the themes of home and family. “We’ll have an eclectic smorgasbord of amazing artists across multi-generations all coming together to celebrate home, belonging and family,” she said. “These values of the festival have never wavered, starting all those years ago the goal was to create a meeting place of sharing of ideas, stories and songs.” Noonan’s own vision comes to the fore 36

via several initiatives including a strong First Nations focus. “For me it was very important we chat to and be informed by our elders, the Ngunnawal people, and thankfully I’ve been very lovingly welcomed into those discussions. “That sense of country where we are is embedded through the whole festival.” Increased participation and community engagement is another priority to be implemented in part by the all-new Folk Family Choir (already 500+ strong), and an expanded workshop program. A second Session Bar, a favourite of many latenight raconteurs, chanteurs and chanteuses, will be another welcome addition. While festivalgoers almost religiously gather from across the country over the Easter long weekend, a strong contingent of its 80,000+ attendees are locals. Noonan has sought to honour that in her programming by ensuring Canberra has robust representation in the musical line-up. One such Canberra performer set to feature is singer-songwriter Kim Yang. A festival stalwart, Yang has long loved the intimate, communityfocused environment of the Folky. “For me it’s all about getting back to the community again, gathering with other people and

enjoying live music together,” Yang said. “It’s just really nice to chat with people and hear how they’ve followed the festival over the years; there’s actually some hardcore fans. “It feels like you belong straight away.” Yang also loves making the most of the Folky’s festival atmosphere by bouncing between venues to bask in the array of acts on stage at any one time. “I’m fond of other singer-songwriters and this is the best place to be where you can jump to different tents and watch performers from interstate,” she said. “This is the place to be where I can have that intimate environment and listen to songwriters tell their stories.” As well as her solo performances, Yang has been handpicked by Noonan to be part of a 14-woman tribute performance honouring Joni Mitchell. Other local performers include Omar Musa and Fred Smith, while headlining interstate acts like Kate Ceberano, Josh Pyke, and gypsy-jazz ensemble Cigány Weaver are all booked for the 2022 National Folk Festival. “We’re very excited to share our spectacular collection of artists with you soon,” Noonan said. Book talk Jeff Popple recommends five books to put under the tree this Christmas. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Dark Hours by Michael Connelly Allen & Unwin, $32.99

We sell pages for all ages

Michael Connelly has been one of the world’s leading crime fiction writers for several years now and his novels always make for an ideal Christmas present. His latest, The Dark Hours, is an enjoyable read, set against a searing portrait of Los Angeles in 2021. It features his always popular character, retired policeman Harry Bosch, who teams up with LAPD Detective Renèe Ballard to solve a New Year’s Eve murder, which has links back to an old case that he worked on. Exciting, topical, full of social commentary and highly entertaining, it will be greatly appreciated by the crime reader in your family.

canberraweekly.com.au

This exquisite book is a terrific present for children and families. Lovingly illustrated, it follows the people of Fleurville as they work in their gardens, harvest vegetables, cook meals and find comfort in the cycle of life. A fun and environmentally minded picture book, it also serves as a mini guide to gardening and vegetables, and is a good introduction to cooking. Filled with tasty recipes from all over the world, it has simple instructions perfect for young chefs. It also promotes a nice sense of community and family, and provides some good recycling tips. A practical and fun book for kids.

Midnight in the Snow by Karen Swan Macmillan, $32.99

The annual seasonal romance by Karen Swan is always a welcomed present and her latest, Midnight in the Snow, offers some amusing moments and plenty of romance. Film maker Clover Phillips finds herself in the Austrian Alps pursuing reluctant snowboarder Kit Foley, who wants nothing to do with her documentary. Determined to find out the secrets in Foley’s past, Clover pushes on regardless of the consequences and her growing feelings for the athlete. Well-crafted and glamorous, with some vivid descriptions of the Alps, this is an enchanting read. A nice gift for romantics and those after a pleasant, engaging novel.

A Dog’s Best Friend by Laura Greaves Penguin, $34.99

Journalist and self-proclaimed ‘crazy dog lady’ Laura Greaves, is back with another uplifting book that explores the relationships that dogs create with unlikely companions. Dogs are known as ‘man’s best friend’, but in this uplifting book, Laura shows that they can also be good friends to other species. A Dog’s Best Friend contains several unlikely relationships, from the German Shepherd and the fox who play together in the Norwegian snow, to another German Shepherd who has befriended a wallaroo, to a tiny chihuahua who is best friends with a llama. Accompanied with great photos, this is a must for all dog lovers.

Better Off Dead by Lee Child and Andrew Child Bantam, $32

Jack Reacher is the classic action figure. A former military policeman who roams America like a modernday Western hero, Reacher appeals to a wide range of readers and the novels by Lee Child are regularly found on the top of bestseller lists. Better Off Dead is the second co-written effort by Child and his brother, Andrew, who is gradually taking over responsibility for the series. The book finds Reacher in a small Arizonan town helping an army veteran turned FBI agent find her missing twin brother, who has found himself in trouble. A good, light holiday read for your Reacher aficionado.

Now showing Kurup (PG) Deputy Superintendent of police, Krishnadas (Indrajith Sukumaran) is packing up his office after 30 years on the force. While Krishnadas is celebrating his retirement and many achievements, an officer spots a sole book left in the office which details notes on the life and investigation of India’s most wanted fugitive: Sukumara Kurup (Dulquer Salmaan). The movie is an Indian Malayalamlanguage epic crime-thriller that spans the 1960s, ‘70s and 2000s. Based on the true life and crimes of fugitive Kurup, it is shot and scored like Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario; beautifully rich and desaturated colour grading accompanied by deep cello and plunging violin strings. After being introduced to the charming and playful larrikin signing up to India’s Airforce, Kurup

slowly becomes constrained by his new surroundings; his burning ambition and rebellious nature forcing him to operate outside the law. Kurup undergoes a change in mood and becomes obsessed with finding anonymity and the freedom to achieve easy success, leading to the first of his long list of crimes. Like Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful 8, the story is told in a non-linear fashion with no stone left unturned. We flash back and forward, exploring singular events from multiple perspectives. Twists and turns abound at a comfortable pace due to the movie’s generous playtime. The strong cast play their rounded characters fully, none more so than Shine Tom Chacko as the chilling villain, Pilla. Verdict: An enthralling crime epic covering a fascinating character in the vein of Villeneuve and David Fincher. 4 stars. Viewed at Dendy Canberra. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Over the past 18 months, Tania Zeine has expanded her BARJA capsule wardrobe from six to 14 pieces.

Local small business has big heart

Canberra entrepreneur Tania Zeine has launched her own plussize fashion brand, BARJA the label, for women like her who don’t fit Australia’s “standard of beauty”. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

WITH FASHION AND BEAUTY EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

“Usually, small businesses are birthed out of positive experiences … BARJA was birthed out of frustration. Frustration at the lack of inclusivity in the mainstream fashion industry.” Tania Zeine was born to Lebanese parents who escaped their former country during a time of civil war. She was brought up by the warmth and strength of Middle Eastern women who would become her lifelong role models. As years went by, she developed a love-hate relationship with fashion, loving style, but constantly disappointed that her heroes weren’t shown as meeting Western beauty standards. Moreover, as a plus-size woman she could never find clothing she enjoyed, limited to the small, familiar corners at the back of department stores. Eighteen months ago, Tania reached her breaking point, yanking the matter into her own hands by creating BARJA the label – an online capsule wardrobe catering for women size 12-26. “I wanted pieces that were versatile, timeless and comfortable. But also, ultra-stretchy, zip-free and contoured naturally to the female figure, whatever figure that may be. “At the same time, I want BARJA to be so much more than just a fashion label, I want to use it as a platform to advocate on what size inclusivity should

look like.” Currently, Tania works with Brisbane-based wholesalers, selecting and modelling the clothes on herself. Soon she’ll be opening a new chapter, working with manufacturers to design her own pieces. Her driving goal is to give young plus-size women the options they’ve been sorely missing. “Sure, there are big clothing brands that are trying, but we’re still very underrepresented. I know what I’m doing isn’t ground-breaking, but if I can also be another option for a girl my size when she’s shopping, then that means everything to me. “My first collection was six items and I named them after every woman in my family who has inspired me.” As BARJA grew, Tania expanded her marketed wardrobe to 14 pieces. “I try to name every item of clothing after a Middle Eastern woman who is breaking the glass ceiling in their own right. “If I can help give voices to brown women in the tiniest bit, then watch me scream from the rooftops,” Tania laughed. Her reward for pushing past the intimidation she felt of starting BARJA, particularly with no fashion background, was messages from happy customers with backgrounds just like hers.

“Women who grew up the same way I did, who say ‘you have helped me wear a tight dress for the first time in five years’. It makes me cry sometimes. “I received messages like, ‘I got so excited when I saw the names of your clothes. For once it’s not the ‘Sarah dress’ or the ‘Emily dress.’ No, it’s Jawarah, or Nawal!” she exclaimed happily. “We’re starved of representation, so when you get a drop of it, you feel seen. You feel heard.” BARJA caters for modest wardrobes, as well as bodycon pieces tailored for plus-size bodies. “We all want to be able to love ourselves effortlessly. I hope for that one day. At the moment, it can be very disheartening for young brown girls growing up in a society that says the standard of beauty is small, skinny, hairless women. “That was never me. Not even at 12 years old. “When you grow up in a world that tells you to be something different, the only person who can validate you is yourself. “I want BARJA to be a voice that says, ‘your body is okay’. Your body doesn’t have to be sexy for anyone other than you. The thoughts that whisper ‘what do I need to fix’ are not your own. Unlearn them. Your body doesn’t have to be anything for anybody. It just has to keep you alive.” Check out the range at barjathelabel.com canberraweekly.com.au

Happy Uterus’s happy community “On my down days there are people in the endo community

Nat van Dartel’s new Happy Uterus gift packs, for self-care tailored to endometriosis symptoms, will be available at the Haig Park Village Markets on 5 and 19 December. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

who will build me back up,” says local woman, Nat van Dartel. Endo, short for Endometriosis, is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it, often leading to exceptionally painful periods. Recent studies show that an estimated one in 15 Australian women, born 1989-95, have been diagnosed with endometriosis before the age of 30. Nat didn’t intend on finding a community when she created the first ‘Happy Uterus’ - a wearable heat pack to relieve endo symptoms - but the increase in diagnoses found her at the centre of one. “Women of all ages, some have been going through their endo journey for a long time on their own. Others are just starting,

looking for recommendations for specialists, often having just moved to Canberra.” Nat has become what she calls an “in-betweener,” facilitating connections between members of the endo community. Through conversations around her stall at the Haig Park Village Markets, and on the Happy Uterus Instagram page, the community shares with one another their pain, relief, and wider experiences in society. “It’s definitely still uncomfortable for people to talk about, some people feel uncomfortable bringing it up in workplaces,” said Nat. “If someone feels uncomfortable when you tell them about your period, you have to remember that says more about them as an employer than it does about you.

“Within the Happy Uterus community, I try to emphasise that endo is a condition I have, rather than suffer from. I try to turn it around and show that while it’s a part of me, it’s not my whole identity, because that can be really isolating. Happy Uterus’s “monthly wrap ups” share Nat’s own endo journey on Instagram, as well as the total money raised from the donations that come with every purchase, “so people feel like they’re part of that story”. “I call the Happy Uterus an educational advocacy platform that also sells products, rather than just a business.” Catch Nat and the Happy Uterus at the Haig Park Village Markets on 5 and 19 December. - Anja de Rozario

CURTIN 2605 Region Woden Valley Median house price $1,300,000*

*Source: realestate.com.au last updated 27 October 2021

Curtin is a top-notch area of Canberra in a great location. Real estate agent at Cream Residential, Jack Wilson, said Curtin provides a range of buying and price options and has been garnering a lot of attention lately. “It’s so close to main arterials, whether you want to head to the city or the south, you’re just outside the hustle and bustle but where you need to be in no time. With Woden serviced with everything you could need, and the Curtin shops are being refurbished, it really is a great location,” Mr Wilson said. “Our agency have sold many properties in Curtin, and we rate the suburb very highly. Location wise it’s something special.” Mr Wilson said he loves the green spaces in Curtin and

Just next to the Tuggeranong Parkway lies Curtin Park, a generous nature preserve providing off-leash dog trails and perfect picnic spots.

the suburb’s impeccable Radburn design. “It’s often desired by families, and multiple schooling options with excellent reputations are a great incentive. We have people calling weekly asking if there’s anything in the suburb and it’s high on the wish list for buyers looking to get into the Woden Valley,” he said. “My favourite spots would be the upper streets of Curtin – Munro, Jennings and Dunstan Street are all exceptional.” Mr Wilson mentioned the Statesman Hotel is a good pub to visit and said the suburb has some exciting new eateries coming with the refurbishments.

Curtin facts: • Named after John Curtin, who was Prime Minister between 1941 and 1945 • Population of approximately 5,275 (in 2020) • The most affordable suburb to rent a unit in Canberra, with a median average of $442 • Established in 1962

20 Years... WOW! This month I celebrate 20 years in an industry that has given me so much. Twenty years ago I launched myself head first into something I knew nothing about, or at least that was my perception. In actual fact knowing nothing about houses, building styles, roof types ended up being quite okay and this information is easily learned. What I worked out pretty quickly when meeting people in their homes, was that the skills I needed, I actually had inside me. Sitting with owners, patiently listing to their stories, celebrating with them, having empathy in difficult situations, being ready, willing and able to take the journey of selling and buying with them. I am so grateful to all of the owners in Canberra that have placed their trust in me, made me part of their family and for many of those owners, we have had long and meaningful friendships. I believe the other reason I’ve had a successful twenty years, is being part of the LJ Hooker family, feeling valued, appreciated and mentored by some of the best in the business. To my LJ Hooker family, thank you so much for participating in my success, believing in me and supporting me at every turn. I’m not sure there’ll be another twenty, but at this point I have no plans to move on, so if I can be part of your real estate journey, please give me a call.

CAFÉ “I don’t just enjoy coffee, I live for it.” Some may even say Manuela is Melburnian at heart. During her diplomatic posting, she hopes to help cafés from all across Australia to import and enjoy Ecuadorian coffee beans from the fertile Amazonian basin and high Andean mountains.

FINE CUISINE As a diplomat, Manuela has travelled to dozens of countries and enjoyed some of the finest cuisine in the world. However, “nothing compares to Ecuadorian gastronomy, especially Ceviche, Locro de Papa [potato soup], and Mote Pillo [hominy corn with scrambled eggs].” Thankfully, she was able to enjoy the Ecuadorian cuisine at the 2021 Ecuadorian National Day Reception.

My favourite things

Manuela Fernández de Córdova

CUENCA There’s no place like home, and that’s certainly true for Manuela. Born and raised in Cuenca, Manuela grew up in one of the most enchanting cities in Ecuador, known for its architecture, rich traditions, gastronomy, and incredible nature. “My home town will always hold a special place in my heart.”

THE GALÁPAGOS TORTOISES

Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Ecuador in Australia, concurrent to New Zealand and Fiji Manuela Fernández de Córdova has had an extensive career as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador. She is passionate about sharing the beauty of Ecuador’s rich culture, history, and people across the world, and has enjoyed working to strengthen the bonds of friendship that unite Ecuador and Australia. Despite the differences between Ecuador and Australia, there are many similarities, and Manuela is grateful that the friendliness of Canberra makes her feel welcome and at home. Before coming to Australia, she worked in the Embassies of Ecuador in Uruguay and Malaysia, as well as in the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, the Asia and Oceania Directorate, and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change. Manuela speaks Spanish, English, German, Italian, and Portuguese, and is married with three beautiful children.

Manuela visited the Galápagos Islands, located 1000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, with her family. Her children were surprised to see “the tortoises were bigger than them!” As someone who loves nature and animals, the Galápagos tortoises always bring a smile to Manuela’s face.

FOOTBALL Manuela established the football team Latinos FC to participate in the Diplomatic Corps Cup 2021 in Canberra, bringing together staff from the Embassies of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay. “My amazing teammates in Latinos FC are what makes this my favourite hobby in Canberra,” she says. canberraweekly.com.au
