contents 08 From the editor Do you have a favourite holiday? For a dear ex-pat American friend, Thanksgiving has always been top of her list, largely because it is a dedicated occasion to reflect on what one feels thankful for. She continues the tradition by inviting her Aussie mates to an annual heart-warming Thanksgiving celebration. It’s a joyous occasion and I’m thankful for our friendship. For my ebullient young neighbour, who has spent many weeks home schooling and long months without seeing her beloved grandparents, Christmas is “the best day ever”. Not because of the presents, but because her extended family gets together, and the youngest grandkids play tricks on their Poppy, a willing partner in fun. During my childhood in Brisbane, Christmas was usually hot and humid. Despite this, Nan would roast turkey and ham in the oven, and we’d dig sixpences out of hot plum pudding as the ice cream pooled into the custard. Christmas remains a firm favourite, though it’s low-maintenance these days. Reasons to be grateful this past week include experiencing Chiaroscuro at The Courtyard Studio, celebrating success and meeting new people at the ACT Export Awards reception, celebrating triumph over adversity while meeting new people and seeing old friends at Lifeline Canberra’s Women of Spirit Awards, a family birthday celebration, and convivial company and delicious fare at Tammy’s Thanksgiving party.

Bookfair returns, the ‘lifeblood’ of Lifeline Canberra come,” she said. One hundred pallets will be brought out, containing 150,000 items – including children’s books, fiction, non-fiction, humanities, Australiana, science and technology, and magazines – so there is sure to be something for everyone. And if more books are needed, Lifeline will send pallets from its nearby Mitchell warehouse. “We’ll keep bringing the books out as long as they’re selling,” Ms Leeson said. With thousands of items for sale, Canberrans often find books that are meaningful to them, she said. Some turn up out-of-print books for which they have searched for many years. One woman, for instance, came to the Bookfair for 30 years trying to fill the gap in her collection, but one book eluded her. Three years ago, to her astonishment, she located that book

For many Canberra bibliophiles, the three-day Lifeline Bookfair is a highlight of the season. It has become synonymous with high quality bargain books, DVDs, vinyl records, CDs, puzzles, and games – and the best of two years’ worth of donations will be on offer at Thoroughbred Park in mid-December. “We have two years of donations, pent up and ready to go,” said CarrieAnn Leeson, Lifeline Canberra CEO. “They’ve all been sorted, priced, and stored very carefully and lovingly for this very occasion when we can – with restrictions – get out and do a mass event.” This time, around 15,000 visitors are expected over the three days. (Numbers will be limited inside due to COVID restrictions.) Ms Leeson does not expect the 25,000 people who would come normally. “We’re going to have to build back up to that in the years to

– and now has the complete set. Others find bargains. A student purchased a textbook for $100; she found the same book for only $4 at the Bookfair, in VG+ condition. “She was obviously very stoked about that; she was able to return the other book, and keep that money for something else,” Ms Leeson said. Kids get lost in a good book in the children’s section, while people who donated books see their book on sale – “and know they’re doing an amazing thing for the crisis support line” (13 11 14). The Bookfair is Lifeline’s major funding event – “the mainstay and the lifeblood of our organisation,” Ms Leeson said, as it works to prevent suicide. Providing crisis support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to Canberra and the nation costs millions of dollars, she said. Lifeline receives around $200,000 every year from the government, but the Bookfairs generate “a great deal more than that”. (This year, however, will probably only bring in half the takings of the EPIC fairs, because of juggling visitor numbers, restrictions, comfort levels, and stock levels.) “Every dollar that we raise at the Bookfairs goes straight to the crisis support line,” Ms Leeson said. “So people know that when they come in and grab a handful of books, if they spend around $26, that’s a life-changing call.” At the moment, Lifeline receives 3,200 calls a day – midway between its pre-lockdown average of 2,500 calls a day and lockdown’s recordbreaking peak of 3,700. Call numbers may have fallen by 500, as people return to work and everyday activities, but Lifeline is dealing with longer, more complex calls. “The challenge is to get more crisis supporters onto the phones to answer more calls,” Ms Leeson said. Fortunately, Canberrans are signing up to work the crisis
support line. Last month, 100 people attended a volunteer information session – a record; normally, only 50-odd attend. Almost all will sign up; and so might 10 or 20 more who did not attend the session. “Lifeline has been there throughout the pandemic; it hasn’t dialled back its services, but in fact, scaled them up,” Ms Leeson said. “People recognise that, and want to give back. “We’re eternally grateful for individuals who choose to give their time to Lifeline in that way, because it’s no small undertaking. Being a crisis supporter is incredibly strenuous … but the service they provide on the phones is life-saving and life-changing.” In February, Lifeline will hold its fiftieth birthday Bookfair at Exhibition Park. To mark the occasion, the Collectors’ Room will return; Lifeline has promised “some very special pieces” for sale. It will, Ms Leeson said, be one of the charity’s biggest Bookfairs – “as big and as exciting as we can go”. COVID restrictions and cleaning processes will be in place; and COVID marshals will monitor the Bookfair. Ms Leeson anticipates government inspectors coming through every few hours. “Hopefully, people’s comfort levels will allow them to come out to the Bookfair knowing that we’ve got all of the safety measures in place,” Ms Leeson said. In the meantime, Canberrans can visit Lifeline’s Book Lovers Lane at the Fyshwick Markets (Thursday to Sunday), or their online Ebay store. - Nick Fuller The Lifeline Bookfair will be held at Thoroughbred Park, 1 Randwick Road, Lyneham, from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 December. Gates open Friday 9am–6pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am–4pm. Entry by gold coin donation or ‘tap and go’. For more information, visit lifelinecanberra. org.au/books/bookfair

Canberra narco tourism capital of Australia? Why is it that Green and left-wing Labor members always seem to want to make Canberra a social experiment? Despite the Federal Police Commissioner aggressively opposing left faction Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson’s dangerous drug decriminalisation bill and going so far as to warn that Canberra will be a magnet for drug dealers of all shapes and sizes to the extent that we risk becoming the “narco capital of Australia”, the bill will proceed. Under this bill, a person in possession of 10 hits of ice will only be subject to a $100 fine - that’s three times less than you get for driving at 46 kmph through the Civic 40 kmph zone. Police have said 10 hits of ice is enough to send the average user on a two-to-threeday bender.
In recent months, we have seen well-liked and respected Canberra sportsman Dick Cater murdered in an ice-fuelled attack by a man with a knife who seriously injured three others at the same time. We have also seen four people killed in Darwin by a gunman high on ice. The bill deletes the current maximum fine of 50 penalty units and/or two years imprisonment and replaces it with an infringement notice for $100. There is nothing in the current bill about rehabilitation programs and/or educational campaigns to help stop young people from using illicit drugs in the first place. All the bill does as it currently stands is to reduce the penalty to a $100 on-the-spot fine. Talk about encouraging young people to take up drug use and encouraging dealers to flock to the
ACT to reap more ill-gotten gains from local victims. There are several petitions against this bill doing the rounds encouraging the Assembly to vote against the bill and to do more for rehabilitation and educating potential users. Some of the feedback being given to volunteers in Tuggeranong, who were out and about with a petition against the bill last week, included that of a health worker who said she had seen how drug-fuelled domestic violence affected children and families, a drug rehab worker who said she sees the effect of drugs every day and pleaded for the possession of hard drugs not to be decriminalised, and some law enforcement officers who commended the guys getting signatures. Some people didn’t even
WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
know there was a bill before the Assembly in the first place. I would suggest that anyone concerned about this legislation write to the five elected MLAs in your electorate (representing all parties in the Assembly) and tell them your thoughts and concerns. The more people who do this, the more chance there is (hopefully) of common-sense prevailing Editor’s note: The opinions expressed in this column are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Canberra Weekly.

The ACT’s first Safe Haven, in Belconnen, is “a safe, welcoming space for people in distress if they’re experiencing mental health issues, or just life issues,” says Kate Russell. She’s one of three peer support workers. All have experienced emotional or mental distress themselves, and know what it’s like to grapple with illness or depression, to feel stressed or isolated, and to come out the other side. The service is intended to offer early intervention – help before people reach a crisis point and need to go to a hospital emergency department or need an in-patient stay, said Emma Davidson, ACT Minister for Mental Health. “People experiencing distress … can come in and have a conversation with someone who really understands,” she said.
“If we want people to [recover] sooner, the sooner we can connect people with the right service … the better.” The peer support workers say they wish such a service had been available to them years ago. Ben Martin was diagnosed with bipolar in his early 20s. “It was certainly rough; it was like tumbling down a cliff,” he said. If the Safe Haven had existed then, he would have sought it out. Safe Haven is not just for people with mental health conditions, but for all Canberrans 16 and older (including carers). A year-long pilot program will fine-tune the ACT service. The ACT Government plans to set up a second Safe Haven on the southside, close to the Canberra Hospital emergency department. - Nick Fuller

The heartbreaking rates of domestic and family violence continue to be a stain on Australia, with an estimated 2.2 million adults reported as victims of physical and/or sexual violence by a partner from the age of 15. To raise awareness, the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast is hosting the ‘Zonta Says No’
campaign with several significant events as part of the UN’s international 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, 25 November-10 December. Zonta’s social media campaign will feature poignant photos of 38 pairs of shoes, representing every woman killed by domestic violence in Australia in the past 12 months.
The Show returns This year’s Royal Canberra Show was cancelled for the first time in its 70-year history – so organisers are tremendously relieved the “oneweekend wonder” will be back in February 2022. The Show will be held over the weekend of 25-27 February. “It’ll be good to get the Show back on the road,” said Geoff Cannock, CEO of the Royal National Capital Agricultural Society (RNCAS). The last Show was held in
February 2020, and the 2021 Show was cancelled in November 2020. It normally takes 12 months to organise the Show, held on Australia’s biggest showground, but RNCAS will organise it in only three. Some changes to proceedings will be needed to accommodate public health requirements. All public tickets will have to be purchased in advance online to assist with contact tracing, if required.

Renter told to vacate after seeking repairs
76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax
“As a tenant, what the owner and real estate says goes. It’s dehumanising. It’s like you’re stripped of any human rights.” Anna [not her real name] has been living in a rental nightmare, where she feels her landlord and the real estate agency see her as a figure on a bank statement, rather than a human being. “Before we were with the real estate agency, I knew that the ceiling was sagging in the living room, and I told him he needs to fix it because a roof has caved in on me before,” Anna said. “I had to get the three quotes and present him with the information and liaise with the contractors myself.” Most recently, Anna said she identified a safety issue within the
storage facility, which she believed to be an unapproved structure that a builder deemed as unsafe. “We put the request in for the safety of our children, and the day after it was fixed, we were given a vacate notice,” she said. “They said our repairs aren’t justified because we pay less than the market rate for the property.” Out of fear of being left homeless, Anna said renters have to keep quiet and put up with unsafe housing, with no alternative. Anna feels as though she’s done everything she possibly can within her capacity as a tenant and has been repeatedly shown by her landlord and real estate agency that she “doesn’t matter”. - Abbey Halter Read the full story on canberraweekly.com.au

Try dragon boating this weekend Dragon boating on Lake Burley Griffin is stunning, says Dr Sally Bromley, the new head coach of the Canberra Ice Dragons, the ACT’s own Guinness World Recordwinning club. Jane Farrell began dragon boating in her 50s. “I never thought I’d take up something and enjoy it so much, and be so competitive and social at the same time,” she said. And being out on the water is a beautiful, peaceful feeling. You can get a taste for the sport at the club’s open day this Saturday 4 December 11am-1pm, at Commonwealth Place, near the flags. Current paddlers will take
‘rookies’ out for a try in the boats. There will also be music, food, entertainment, racing, and games. You can register on Facebook or turn up on the day. (Weather permitting; if Saturday is wet, the event will be postponed to January.) The Canberra Ice Dragons were formed in 2003, and have been national club champions three times. In 2009, the club broke the Guinness World Record for the longest distance paddled in a dragon boat over a 24-hour period. The Ice Dragons train three times a week. Even if you miss the open day, you can try any Saturday training session; www.icedragons.com.au
Raiders apply for 2023 NRLW licence The Canberra Raiders are highly likely to be fielding a team for the 2023 NRLW competition, the club this week announcing they will begin the formal application process early next year. Raiders CEO Don Furner said their application ticks the boxes in terms of facilities, junior registration numbers, finances and being a regional club well poised to develop the women’s game in country NSW.
Former Jillaroos player and Raiders board member, Katrina Fanning, said it would be fitting for Canberra to get a NRLW side in 2023 given the region’s longstanding ties to the women’s game. “The Jillaroos, the national championships all started out of here,” she said. “With the legacy of being able to play at the most elite level in green is just a dream come true, and I’m not even going to get to play!”
Fahey drafted by Giants Canberra-born Josh Fahey is a step closer to playing in the AFL after being selected by the GWS Giants on the second night of the AFL draft. Fahey, a Giants Academy product who grew up playing for the Queanbeyan Tigers, was taken with pick 42 after GWS 16

matched a bid from the Bulldogs. The 18-year-old is a medium defender/wingman with a scintillating left boot who likes to take the game on with his speed. Getting picked up by the Giants is a dream come true for Fahey, who has been in the expansion club’s system since under 13s.

GIVIT donation of the week: Christmas wrapping supplies
Sunday 5 December 9am-1pm at Harmonie German Club, 49 Jerrabomberra Avenue, Narrabundah. German wurst, schnitzels, cakes, breads, beer, wines, spirits, arts, crafts, vinyl records, live German band, dancing and more. Free entry, all welcome to a fun-filled family day. More info: 6295 9853.
The holidays are a challenging period for registered charities and support organisations across the ACT as nonprofit organisations have limited resources to ensure everyone has a happy festive season. One GIVIT registered organisation is working to ensure community members have access to gifts to put under the tree and the wrapping supplies that make a gift extra special. The organisation is hoping to offer complimentary Christmas supplies and even the odd Christmas ornament to bring the spirit of the season into some deserving homes. The organisation spends 365 days a year supporting clients who face extreme hardship such as financial instability, mental and physical illness, homelessness, domestic and family violence, and aged care members with little support. GIVIT is reaching out to generous Canberrans to help spread the love this season by donating some Christmas essentials to bring a bit of sparkle to the lives of many. To donate, visit givit.org.au/ whats-needed, search category ‘Household Items – Christmas Wrapping Supplies’, location ‘ACT’. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.
Community garden open Good Shepherd Community Church invites Canberrans to join them in their community garden. Come and potter, have a cuppa and, when produce is growing, you are welcome to take and enjoy. Open each Tuesday from 10am to 12 noon at the Church in Chisholm, corner Hambidge and Proctor Streets. Fish and Seafood Tips
• A firm bladder area is the best indicator of a fresh whole fish. Please note that contact with ice can dull the eyes of whole fish, even when very fresh. • Fresh fish should have a pleasant fresh ocean smell. • Never store fillets in direct contact with ice. Always remove packaging, cover and refrigerate. Cook and eat within two days. • • • •

The fi rmness of uncooked prawns can be an indicator of freshness. However, some species are naturally softer than others. Uncooked prawns should be stored in a bowl of ice and water, in the fridge. The ice and water should be changed daily. Cook and eat within two days. Always defrost fish and seafood in a covered bowl, in the fridge. Cover Oysters and Smoked Trout with wet paper, then seal in a container or with wrap and refrigerate. Caution: Even ‘boneless’ fish may contain bones. Take care before eating and check carefully before feeding to children.

Grilled peaches with gorgonzola and hazelnuts
WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO
Serves 4
Images and text from Fairytale Cooking by Alexander Hoss-Knakal, photography by Melina Kutelas. Murdoch Books RRP $39.99.
Button mushroom flatbread with hazelnut pesto
4 ripe peaches 1 lemon 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp honey 40g (1/4 cup) hazelnuts
Serves 4
15g (1/4 cup) basil leaves
120g mild gorgonzola cheese
For the dough
15g (3/4 cup) parsley leaves
2 rosemary sprigs
250g plain flour
125ml (1/2 cup) olive oil
130g rocket (arugula)
10g fresh yeast
To make the dough, sift the flour onto your benchtop and make a well in the centre. Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water. Pour the yeasted water into the well. Add the olive oil and salt and knead to make a smooth dough. Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl, cover with plastic wrap and leave to rise for about 1 hour.
1 punnet cress, optional
Preheat the oven to 240°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Punch down the dough, dust your benchtop with flour and roll the dough out into an oval 30 x 20 cm in size and 2–3 mm thick. For the topping, trim and slice the mushrooms. Halve and juice the lemon. Combine the sliced mushrooms with the lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper and set aside to marinate for 10 minutes. Finely crush the coriander seeds in a mortar and pestle and toss in with the mushrooms. Stir the salt and pepper into the cream cheese and spread the mixture on the rolled-out dough, leaving a margin of about 1 cm. Spread the mushrooms evenly on top. Bake in the preheated oven (middle rack) until golden brown, about 15–20 minutes.
Whisk 1 Tbsp olive oil with the honey and lemon juice. Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a frying pan. Add the peaches and fry for about 2 minutes per side. Transfer the peaches to a casserole dish in a single layer, cut side up, and brush with the marinade. Coarsely chop the hazelnuts. Coarsely crumble the gorgonzola cheese and divide it among the peach halves. Sprinkle with the nuts. Rinse the rosemary and shake dry. Add the sprigs to the dish. Bake the peaches in the preheated oven (middle rack) for about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, peel and crush the garlic for the hazelnut pesto. Coarsely chop the hazelnuts and dry roast them lightly in a frying pan. Set aside to cool. Coarsely grate the pecorino cheese. Rinse and shake the herbs dry, then combine them with the grated cheese and olive oil and blend until smooth. Finally, fold in the hazelnuts and garlic. Cut the flatbread into slices and serve together with the hazelnut pesto.
Meanwhile, pick through the rocket. Wash and spin or pat dry. Divide the green leaves among plates and drizzle with the peach marinade from the roasting dish. Cut the cress, rinse, and shake dry. Arrange the peaches on top of the rocket, sprinkle with the cress and serve.
150ml lukewarm water 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt For the topping 200g button mushrooms 1 lemon 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp coriander seeds 175g (3/4 cup) cream cheese For the hazelnut pesto 2 garlic cloves 50g (1/3 cup) hazelnuts 30g pecorino cheese
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Wash, pat dry and halve the peaches. Remove the stones. Halve and juice the lemon.

Canberra Wine District’s labour of love

This week, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr launched a new joint branding for the Canberra Wine District; ‘Of Hearts and Vines’ was a collaboration between neighbouring vineyards to celebrate the survival of what Mr Barr dubbed “about two years of rolling crisis”. The Of Hearts and Vines brand encompasses over 60 small regional businesses throughout the Canberra Wine District and is intended to be the ground of shared events and tourism campaigns for the next half decade. Mr Barr wished the neighbourhood of wineries well, praising their survival of the 2020 bushfi res, multiple waves of the global pandemic, as well as preparing for “a few potential challenges on the horizon”. “We’re in a reasonably good
position now to emerge from this challenging period,” he said. “There’s a lot of pent-up demand at the moment for a renewal of domestic tourism - we are already seeing that.” Also the ACT’s Minister for Tourism and Special Events, Mr Barr said the Canberra Wine District gives strength to the material of the whole region’s tourism industry. Sarah Collingwood, of Four Winds Vineyard, spoke of leaning on her neighbours through years of tears over frosts, hailstorms, and heat waves, but “also through toasts to trophies, successful vintages, and helpful neighbours”. “My husband John and I have always said, if one of our tractors failed during a vintage, there’s any one of 20 neighbours that we could call on to lend us their own.
“The challenge has been how we capture this collaboration, this kindness, and its authenticity, and tell the world about it. How to tell people about the fabulous wines, the colourful characters, and this beautiful place,” Ms Collingwood said. The community landed on a symbol incorporated into their shared name, in which the ‘W’ is simply constructed of a heart, and the fruit of their labour, merged into one. David Faulks of Tallagandra Hill Winery was the rallying voice behind the development of the joint brand. “There is a limit to what we can achieve on our own within the wine industry. We’re small businesses, we don’t have a lot of riches individually,” Mr Faulks said. He engaged local musician,
Marty K to co-write ‘Call of Hearts and Vines’ as part of the new brand. The musician’s crooning vocals on weathering storms and leaning on community will be released on Spotify within the next two weeks. The Chief Minister described the song as “bold and absolutely
authentic”. Mr Faulks concluded the launch with a call to Canberrans to “get behind all of our local producers, our wonderful wine, get behind the whole community.” More information: canberrawines.com.au - Anja de Rozario

Canberra Symphony Orchestra chief conductor and artistic director Jessica Cottis has built the Orchestra’s 2022 season around several iconic pieces in the Western classical music canon. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

That’s arts & entertainment CSO’s 2022 season inspired by ‘visionaries’ The Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s 2022 season will feature some of the most important and revered works in the Western classical music canon, drawing on the genre’s visionaries to inspire audiences. “I really wanted to create a season full of possibilities and I was inspired by really some of the greatest musical minds,” CSO chief conductor and artistic director Jessica Cottis told Canberra Weekly. “I felt that coming out of such a difficult period of time, that now was the perfect moment really to be really inspired.” It all started with one piece, in fact, one chord – the famous opening chord of Wagner’s opera, Tristan und Isolde, Prelude. “It’s a chord of great expectation, we don’t know where it’s going, we kind of have no idea in which direction it will resolve, and Wagner uses that so brilliantly.” From there, Cottis looked to include other influential works like Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 and Stravinsky’s Petrushka; and nods to Wagner’s longstanding influence with works like Bernard Herrmann’s Film Suite from Vertigo. Cottis will lead the Orchestra in performances of Wagner, Herrmann, Mendelssohn, and Australian composer Margaret Sutherland at the epic Llewellyn One – Redemption in April. While acknowledging the masters, the Orchestra’s longstanding “zeal and passion” to program Australian music can also be seen throughout their 2022 schedule. Twenty Australian works, including four premieres, will be performed across three Australian Series concerts and the 2022 program more widely. “One of my main focuses with Canberra is this commitment to Australian music and our 44

ability to write our own history in the arts and music,” Cottis said. After such a disrupted 2021, she acknowledged the unwavering support of the Orchestra’s audience. “The act of making music is a collaboration, and we can’t wait to share this extraordinary, mindexpanding music with you all,” Cottis said. Canberra climate activist features in new documentary Canberra student and well-known climate activist Daisy Jeffrey features in a new documentary
on Amazon Prime, titled Burning, that takes an unflinching look at Australia’s 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires. The 19-year-old first-year ANU arts student’s activist journey began when she first got involved with the School Strike for Climate movement in 2018. Then, in early 2020 at age 17, she authored a book on the politics of climate change, titled On Hope. Jeffrey’s involvement with Burning came after director, Eva Orner, contacted her at the end of last year. She spent “three to four” days with the film crew on Gumbaynggir country - the northern NSW Highlands. From Sydney originally, Jeffrey said the experience grounded her and gave her perspective on the impact of the bushfires. “That usual symphony of sound you hear in the bush is just not there anymore and it’s really unusually desolate considering you’re meant to be in the subtropics,” she said. Jeffrey is proud of the documentary for “telling it like it is” and avoiding the typical climate doco cliché of ending the film with unbridled optimism. “I’ve seen a lot of films about the bushfires and a lot of talk, and I have to be honest, none of them hit the nail on the head as much as this documentary has,” she said. “Often it’s a case of ‘tragedy, tragedy, tragedy, tragedy, oh, but there’s hope’ right at the end. “This documentary gives you what happened, the personal and the macro aspects of it, and who is responsible for fuelling this crisis, what we can do.” Read extended versions of all three stories at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

Now showing Venom: Let There Be Carnage (M) In 1996, a young Cletus Kasady watches helplessly as his love is taken away to an institute for the criminally insane. In the present, Kasady (Woody Harrelson) makes a deal with investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy): to delay his upcoming execution, Kasady will reveal the whereabouts of the hidden bodies of his many victims. With his alien symbiote’s help, however, Brock figures out the locations and publishes his story. The first Venom movie made close to $1bn in 2018 thanks to the popularity of the character and Tom Hardy’s zany performance. This sequel has been hampered by the pandemic, a change in director, and low classification. In the Marvel comics, Kasady is an insane serial killer, like DC’s Joker, with an alien symbiote
that enhances his negative character traits and ability to inflict pain. However, it seems swathes of scenes have been left on the cutting-room floor to gain a lower classification. Kasady’s character is now bizarrely framed sympathetically; tragically wronged with a romantic motivation instead of getting revenge on society by painting the town red! Brock and his alien symbiote ‘Venom’ are a bickering odd couple. Choosing to go their separate ways, the short runtime doesn’t allow the characters to fully explore their losses or to come to the realisation they are better together. Verdict: Rather than a full movie, this sequel is more of an odd ‘taster’ of things to come on the future unclassified cut. 2 stars. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

Hay fever HQ Canberra was already acknowledged as the hay fever capital of Australia with one in three Ken Behrens suffering from hay fever compared to the national average of one in five. If that wasn’t bad enough, this year is the worst on record for extreme pollen days with a total of 11 so far (as at 26 November) compared to a typical year of two to three such events in Canberra. With the hay fever season not finishing until January and record rainfall heightening grass growth, we are set for more testing weeks ahead.
Why do some people not get hay fever?
What is hay fever?
Other than antihistamines, what can I do?
Hay fever is a hyped-up immune response to environmental allergens like pollens, dust and animals. A person with hay fever exposed to allergens will get a histamine response, triggering their body to flush out the allergens. It’s why they sneeze and their eyes stream with tears and their nose runs. Many experience tiredness and brain fog like you might get when you get a similar immune event like a cold. Standard treatment for hay fever is antihistamine medications.
In complementary medicine, any symptom such as hay fever is a sign that your body needs some support to get back into balance. We tackle hay fever in two key ways:
De-tox: Hay fever can be a vicious cycle; if you weren’t tired and cranky before you got hay fever you will be once you get it! Traditional treatments typically focus on supporting liver function. Invariably in cases of hay fever, the liver is in a toxic state of overwhelm which can be emotional as well as physical. Thankfully, herbs, supplements and foods that support liver function work on all levels to restore balance. You might like to cut out dairy foods, too, as they are typically mucous forming and can exacerbate symptoms.
De-stress: Because stress is central to the optimal functioning of your immune system, one way to effectively reset a hyped-up immune response is to regularly access states of deep rest and relaxation. Stress is a complex topic,
So, if you don’t mind the side effects, you could just take an antihistamine but if you choose to address hay fever holistically, not only will you reduce or resolve your hay fever, your overall health will be better too.
It’s not well understood why people experiencing the same exposure to allergens will have different responses. One theory is that it’s hereditary, if your parents had hay fever you are more likely to have it too. Another theory is that the more exposure you have to microorganisms as a child, the less likely you are to have allergies like hay fever later in life, which points to a link between a healthy and diverse microbiome being protective against hay fever.
however, if you suffer from hay fever it is worth looking at how effectively and frequently you are able to unwind. You might be able to make some simple tweaks or you might need to get some support.
Treat the cause of your condition, not just the symptoms.

Canberra Sweat Clinic advertising moment
Launching on Monday 6 December, Canberra Sweat Clinic will offer a range of treatments, including miraDry technology which is said to help reduce excessive underarm sweating by up to 82 per cent.
Hands up if you sweat more than you’d like to? No sweat! Canberra Sweat Clinic offers a suite of treatments designed to help clients control excessive sweating.
If you feel like your life is being controlled by excessive sweating, you should know that you are not alone. Excessive, uncontrollable sweating, or Hyperhidrosis, is a condition that affects about one in 20 people around the world. That’s millions of people sweating and struggling just like you. However, if you’re on the lookout for a lifestyle change, you’re in luck. Monday 6 December marks the official launch of the Canberra Sweat Clinic. The new practice offers a full selection of treatments for excessive sweating, including Botox injections, as well as incorporating a special focus on treating sweat reduction through miraDry’s energy-based technology. Sweat is a way of controlling our body temperature; it cools our skin’s surface as the water in the sweat evaporates. Sometimes, the body’s inbuilt air conditioning is overactive, causing it to sweat four or five times more than is necessary. This can be embarrassing, uncomfortable, and disabling, particularly in our social lives. miraDry is the only US Food and Drug
perspirants and oral medication are not enough. “Here at the Canberra Sweat Clinic, we appreciate that miraDry technology means only one to two treatments for our patients, and is non-surgical, with immediate results.” Dr Sung advises that miraDry technology might be for you if: • You fi nd yourself annoyed or embarrassed by underarm sweat • You are sick and tired of yellow underarm stains or antiperspirant marks on your clothes • You often avoid social activities because you are anxious about how much you may sweat • You want to stop using deodorants and antiperspirants everyday • You want to simultaneously reduce underarm sweat and underarm hair • You’re just tired of worrying about underarm sweat at all If any of these sounds like you, consider booking a FREE consultation with Dr Sung or any of the qualified, friendly Canberra Sweat Clinic team today at canberrasweatclinic.com.au or call (02) 5119 3898.
Canberra Sweat Clinic has the tech for underarm sweat Administration-cleared treatment that can significantly reduce underarm sweat by addressing the root of the problem, not just the symptoms. Soon, Canberra Sweat Clinic will be one of the certified centres within the ACT capable of providing treatment for excessive underarm sweat through miraDry technology. The sweat tech is a radical concept; never before have we questioned whether sweating was optional. It is, and it all comes down to simple maths. Our skin has approximately two million sweat glands over the entire body, with our underarms only containing about two per cent of those glands. miraDry experts say that the loss of that two per cent would not affect the body’s ability to cool itself. “That is exactly what the technology does,” says Dr Wen-Shan Sung. “The energy waves target the sweat glands between your skin and soft tissue. Once those glands are eliminated, they don’t grow back. “With this technology, we are able to provide permanent sweat reduction, up to 82 per cent. We can assist our patients with excessive underarm sweating, if anti-

What do I do if I’m having a hot flush in public?
1
The average Australian woman will go through menopause around the age of 51. ‘Menopause’ refers to when a woman hasn’t had her period in over a year, while the five to 10 years leading up to this point is called ‘perimenopause’, which is when the well-known symptoms tend to occur.
A hot flush is when your body is suddenly overcome with a wave of intense heat. A great way to combat this is to always carry a small fan with you in your bag, or keep at your desk, that you can turn on quickly. Many women find it helpful to layer their clothing so that they can take some off, allowing their body to cool down.

What’s the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Will I experience the same symptoms as my mum?
8
Will menopause ruin my sex life?
In the years leading up to menopause, your periods become infrequent, and you may notice other symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, joint pain, and fatigue. During perimenopause, the estrogen in your body is decreasing, which is why your periods become more infrequent. Typically, your symptoms reduce significantly when you move into menopause.

When will I go through menopause?
Menopause is a completely natural stage of life. Perimenopausal symptoms can happen at any age, although typically begin in your 40s. Menopause can’t be prevented or delayed, but can be managed through lifestyle changes and medicine.

years, whilst others may not even notice. Always speak to a healthcare practitioner and don’t feel the need to just “put up” with it. You can significantly improve menopausal symptoms by embracing a more natural and holistic daily routine with exercise, diet, and meditation.
4
What symptoms can I expect and how do I manage them?
Every woman will experience menopause differently; some may face intense symptoms that last for
Because your body is losing estrogen during menopause, this can sometimes influence the way your body distributes fat, meaning some women may experience weight gain. A healthy diet and exercise routine will assist in keeping your weight on track, but also help reduce the severity of other symptoms.
Genetic factors do play a large role in the timing and severity of your menopause, however environmental and lifestyle factors also play a part.
A lesser reported symptom of menopause is a decreased sex drive, resulting from hormone changes in your body. It doesn’t have to negatively impact your sex life. Being open and honest with your partner about how you’re feeling is essential, as well as finding other ways to make intimacy enjoyable for both of you.

8 top tips to increase auction win chances Property expert and head of research at InvestorKit, Arjun Paliwal, reveals his on-the-day and pre-bidding tips to ensure you have the best chance at winning on auction day.
1
Shortlist several properties, not just one
To avoid having to start house hunting from scratch after losing out in the only auction you had
planned, make sure you have a shortlist of several properties to fall back on. This also minimises the chances of being swept up in the emotion and action of the auction and paying more than you planned for. Looking at more than just one home means you’re less likely to make a regretful over-purchase.
2
Monitor the most recent property sales right up until auction day
The current market is undeniably hot, so using the traditional approach of evaluating the previous three to six months of sales as a property value guide will ultimately give you an inaccurate price. With prices rising so rapidly, you would be three to 10 per cent behind the
correct price. By looking at comparable sales to ensure you have a realistic price guide, it’s best to continue researching right up until the day of the auction. Also, to get a guide on a recent sale or a house under offer, call local agents to gain their insight.
3
Compare apples with apples
When researching, ensure the properties you’re comparing have similar features, and investigate the specific details and features of the homes. For instance, are you comparing one property that’s flood or bushfire prone to another that’s not affected by either? Do they both have a pool, or a bus stop in front?
Wipe out the competition early by placing a strong opening bid
Rather than determine a specific maximum cut-off price, find a cut-off range that you’re willing to pay. The bottom of the range is a ‘fair value’ price that’s realistic for the property, and the top of the range is your non-negotiable price. This gives you some wriggle room when it comes to how much you’re willing to pay.
5
8
Set a cut-off range, not a cut-off price
Understand the market by attending open homes and auctions
You’ll be better prepared and less surprised during a bidding auction if you visit open homes for private properties and attend auctions in the neighbourhood as part of your preparation. This helps you better understand how many bidders you may be up against and an idea of how much interest there is in the area.
6 canberraweekly.com.au
7
To wipe out bidders who didn’t do their homework, consider making yourself known with a strong opening bid to reduce the auction heat. When there’s too many bidders at the start, it can bring out people’s competitive spirits and see high bids placed too quickly. For example, if you’re willing to go up to $1.5 million on a property, start your opening bid at $1.25+ million to scare off the competition.
4
60
Research is obviously so important when it comes to the auction market. CoreLogic provides great overview and analysis on the property market and have recent performance trends based on different areas and suburbs. The key tip is to evaluate what a property may sell for based on the research and then compare it with what it ends up selling for on the day. The difference will provide you with a stronger guide of what the property you want to bid on will realistically sell for and not leave you blindsided.
Follow property professionals trend reports
As you near your cut-off, place smaller or odd numbered bids to slow down the auction
To reduce the heat and slow down an auction, so bids don’t reach a high price too quickly when you’re close to your end price, consider bidding in one-, five-, or ten-thousand-dollar increments, or odd numbers. The auctioneer and bidders could be forced to slow down and evaluate their bids due to the unexpected numbers and could reduce the intensity, making the price not rise as quickly.

If you're on the journey to find a new home, there are times when you arrive to see a similar floorplan, or little variation in design. 'Unique' is not a word to be used lightly - you can be guaranteed you are not going to find another floorplan like this. The original build of the home in 1994 on 962m2 was Hebel block construction, and passive solar in orientation. 'Attention to detail' as a builder's own home is the mantra for this completely renovated and extended home. The huge windows ensure all areas are filled with sunlight at all times of the day, with double glazing in many locations. The open plan living is accentuated with 2.8m high ceilings, and just imagine the open fireplace in winter. There is so much space with 11 linear metres of kitchen stone benchtops, together with a walk-in pantry. Four Californian king sized bedrooms are an added bonus! EER 4.5 New Listing

Dad isn’t ready for aged care
Dad was lonely in the house by himself. The neighbors had all moved. He was still independent but needed a little domestic help.
1 Bedroom Serviced Apartments from $369,000
Then we found The Grange Deakin Serviced Apartments, just 300m from Deakin shops. After a little encouragement Dad moved in and within days he couldn’t stop thanking me. Dad has his own apartment, he’s surrounded by company and regular social activities. The household chores are no longer a burden, the apartment is cleaned and the linen changed weekly. Plus, the pressure of the building maintenance is gone. Dad’s now out doing things he loves again. I know Dad gets home cooked meals and there is someone there 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. The Grange isn’t aged care but I know when the time comes, I can organise external home care support to help Dad stay independent longer. Now when we talk it’s without the worry and nagging. Dad couldn’t be happier.
Each apartment comes with: • a spacious living/dining area • a kitchenette including a fridge and microwave • master bedroom and a large ensuite • balcony or courtyard • individually controlled reverse cycle air conditioning • internal access to our Leisure Centre, Murray House.

TAILORING I adore the craftsmanship that goes into fine tailoring, and a show is a great excuse to invest in some new threads! The three-piece suit for The Stranger was made to measure by local tailor Kumar Advani (Advani Custom Tailors) and I feel like a million dollars in it.
MY STUDENTS
Photo Novel Photographic
I lead workshops for teenagers and young adults at Canberra Youth Theatre, and draw so much energy and inspiration from helping young people express themselves through theatre.
COCKTAIL BARS
My favourite things
Christopher Samuel Carroll
The style, invention, and ritual of a great cocktail, and the ambiance of a 1920s speak-easy ... Throw in some good jazz and lively conversation, and I’ll never leave. Molly’s in Civic and High Jinks in New Acton are favourite haunts.
SNOOKER To relax, I enjoy activities that absorb my attention – and snooker is definitely that. I only started playing this year with the Billiards and Snooker Association of ACT, and it’s a new favourite past-time. I love the elegance, the geometry, the precision … the whole feel of it.
Artistic Director of Bare Witness Theatre Company Christopher is a professional actor, writer and theatremaker from Ireland, trained at The Samuel Beckett Centre, Dublin, and Ecole Jacques Lecoq, Paris. Since moving to Canberra in 2016, he has become one of the city’s most prolific and celebrated performers, winning the inaugural Helen Tsongas Award for Excellence in Acting in 2019 for roles in Twelfth Night, Icarus, Howie the Rookie, and Metamorphosis. As artistic director of Bare Witness Theatre Company, he makes raw, pulsating theatre that ignites the imagination. Described as “the master of the solo performance,” Christopher’s latest one-man show, a nuanced adaptation of The Stranger by Albert Camus, will play at The Ralph Wilson Theatre at Gorman Arts Centre, 8-11 December. His new play, Smokescreen, a sharp-shooting alphamale showdown between two advertising execs in the 1970s, will premiere at The Q, Queanbeyan, 26 January-5 February 2022.
THEATRE I’m never happier than when I’m working on a show - and a close second is being in the audience. I’m so glad that live performance is (slowly) recovering and I’m looking forward to getting out there to see more theatre, music, dance, comedy – and people! canberraweekly.com.au
