contents 25 This time of year isn’t called the silly season for nothing. While it can be fun to feel the buzz of the festivities, it’s important not to feel overwhelmed, especially given the challenges of the past few years. And with research showing around seven in 10 Aussies admit to spending more than they can afford at Christmas, you wouldn’t be alone if you felt a bit swamped. Sage advice is to set a budget – and stick to it! Several families I know give gifts only to the under 18s; others buy only one present, at an agreed value, for the individual whose name they’ve drawn from the hat. For many, the focus is on spending quality time with loved ones – the gift being their shared presence. And after a stressful year, it’s also important to remember self-care is an essential, not an indulgence. Why not give yourself the gift of self-care as a conscious and healthy choice – whether that’s a yoga class, massage, a hamper of salubrious treats, or being in nature. The better you look after yourself, the better you’re able to look after and support those around you. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a nourishing evening with nurturing friends, a cinema outing, and the simple pleasures of mowing the lawn, reading a good book, and patting a cat.

Chapman Primary is sustainable school of year There was cheering in the corridors at Chapman Primary School last week when it was named Actsmart’s Sustainable School of the Year. Chapman Primary (the citation read) fought against litter, tackling chip packets and disposable masks, and introduced waste-free lunchboxes every day. Students made sure no lights or screens were left on during breaks; made
bee hotels and planted pollinator gardens; and ran a water-saving awareness campaign that led to no water being wasted in the school this year. Lessons were held outside to reduce the school’s energy consumption. Active travel was so popular there weren’t enough bike racks. All staff undertook sustainability personal development. “We are incredibly excited,”
Representatives of Chapman Primary School, named the ACT Sustainable School of the Year: adults Jenny, Bec, Trish, and Libby, students Oliver and Annie. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
said teacher Libby Emerson, the school’s sustainability coordinator. “Chapman Primary School has worked towards this for many years.” Annie (Year 3) spends her lunchtimes picking up rubbish with the school’s EnviroSquad, and growing fruit and vegetables in the Gardening Guru group; they sell the produce at assemblies. Oliver (Kindergarten) attends Bush Kids, a nature play program for kindergarten students. They learn about animals and trees, and make tepees. “If we don’t have trees and nature, then our world won’t be a beautiful place, and we’ll all die,” he said. Chapman Primary won grants this year to improve its gardens, and have a drip system installed. But chip packets remain a problem; some children still bring them to school. “If they weren’t available at a
supermarket, the parents wouldn’t pack them,” Ms Emerson said. “Can we please stop chip packets?” “[We] need to help protect our land,” Annie said. “If too much rubbish comes in, our land will have so much pollution that it won’t even be nice anymore.” The Actsmart awards celebrate the contributions of schools, students, and teachers to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the obstacles of COVID-19, more than 60 nominations were received across nine categories. Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Emissions Reduction and Greens leader, presented the awards. “It’s important that we recognise the enormous effort that students and teachers put in,” he said. “It’s very inspiring.” - Nick Fuller More on this story online.
Kids in Care charity drive shows that Canberra cares Canberrans are giving hundreds of presents this year to disadvantaged children through the local police charity, Kids in Care. The annual charity drive ensures every child supported by ACT Child and Youth Protection Services receives a gift on Christmas Day. “We really love being able to bring Christmas to those children who might not otherwise experience it,” said Senior Constable Alex Uren, a Kids in Care board member. This year, Kids in Care expanded beyond Canberra to Queanbeyan and Cooma. Eight hundred presents have been collected so far. Kids in Care will collect children’s toys up to Christmas Eve, through giving trees at Big W stores and the AFP headquarters. Some toys will be kept back for Child and Youth Protection Services 6

(CYPS) and foster children, chair Steve Hill said. “If they’re suffering, we get them a toy.” Kids in Care began in 2013, when Detective Sergeant John Giles attended a job at Christmas time. At the house, he found four small children who were severely neglected, SC Uren said. “The little girl asked John if she could take him inside and show her his Christmas tree, which she described as beautiful. She took him by the hand and inside they went. And what he saw inside was basically a tattered branch with one or two baubles attached. He was mortified, and he knew those children were not going to experience Christmas like most kids should and every kid should be able to. “So, from that day, he went back to the station and raised some money, and was able to get Christmas
presents for those kids that year. In speaking with the CYPS, he realised that there were many more kids in the same position who also wouldn’t experience Christmas.” So the following year, Sgt Giles raised funds, and collected and handed out presents. But kids aren’t just in a vulnerable situation at Christmastime, Mr Hill said.
Every quarter, Kids in Care buy $3,000 worth of vouchers to give to CYPS to give out to children; they help couch-surfing teens; and they give children Easter eggs. A few months ago, a boy couldn’t go to school because his bike broke; Kids in Care bought him a new one – “And he hasn’t missed a day of school, have you, mate?” - Nick Fuller

Regions to get young doctors, ACT burglars get early Xmas present In good news, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has announced the HECS debt owed by recently graduating doctors will be waived if they commit to working in regional areas for three years. This simple but effective measure will go a long way to overcoming the decades-old shortage of doctors in regional Australia. Waiving a $100,000 debt is a huge incentive and as the lifestyle in country Australia is great, many young doctors will happily stay there. Other federal ministers should initiate a similar scheme to encourage other young professionals in their areas of responsibility to move to the country as required. It’s a shame to see Mr Hunt leave politics as he has been one of our best federal ministers who has

achieved much and is respected by all sides of politics. That’s the good news. Now back to the ACT where our local ministers more often than not just can’t get it right. From now on, police will not attend burglaries (unless the burglar is still on the premises being burgled). Victims are now expected to report burglaries online. To start with, unlike Messrs Rattenbury and Barr, a lot of older Canberrans are not computer literate. They won’t be able to report online. A lot of other Canberrans may not bother. This means many burglaries will go unreported, which will lead to more burglaries as the burglars know they won’t be caught. This is especially dangerous for the elderly as they
will be the ones who will be targeted and, if a burglary goes wrong, they run a huge risk of getting hurt. It will also lead to more insurance fraud as some dishonest people will invent a burglary so as to be able to make false claims for “stolen property”. This crazy scheme was initiated because we don’t have enough police. Recent figures show we have 709 active community police on the books. I recall we had over 800 when Jon Stanhope was Chief Minister and even then, we were short of the number needed by about 200 compared with other jurisdictions. The solution is simple. We need more police. It costs money. The police budget is not a priority for this government. Vanity projects like the costly, inefficient, slow,

environmentally destructive tram just take money from where it is needed most – police and hospitals. Ditching the tram now will save over $2 billion. This money can be redirected to getting more police and to fixing up our ailing health system. Just like the first duty of the Australian Government is the protection of its citizens, which means a well-funded and equipped defence force, similarly at a state and territory level, it means an adequately funded and resourced police force - and that includes enough police to attend burglaries in person. news System failing victims A ‘confronting’ report published in the ACT this week reveals that the system is failing victims of sexual violence. The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Steering Committee’s final report states that sexual violence is unacceptably prevalent – nearly a quarter of all Australian women and five per cent of Australian men experience sexual violence; most perpetrators are male – and that supports and responses available to victim survivors are inadequate. It also proposes extensive reforms to address sexual violence, including a 10-year community and lifelong relationship and sexuality education campaign aimed at prevention. The committee was established following March 4 Justice, with tripartite support from all three ACT political parties – the only jurisdiction in Australia to make
this shared commitment, the report noted. The recommendations are informed by experience of victimsurvivors. The committee surveyed more than 400 survivors, and the report includes the detailed stories of 17 survivors. The reforms are extensive and will require sustained implementation over years. Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, and Acting Chief Minister, called the report “confronting, moving, and hard to read”, but said the government must listen to it. “Standing shoulder to shoulder with victim-survivors has always been our commitment.” The government will provide its considered response in the first half of next year. - Nick Fuller
Public sector shields ACT from pandemic recession The ACT experienced its highest unemployment rates in more than 20 years this year, according to SGS Economics & Planning’s annual economic analysis, but the Territory is on track to recover. The ACT avoided a COVID-led recession in 2020, due to public service stability. The ACT is unique among the states and territories in having Public Administration and Safety as its largest industry (around 30 per cent of its economy), explained Dr Marcia Keegan, the report lead author. The public service is less cyclical than other industries that drive state economies, such as mining, tourism, and agriculture. But this August, the ACT suffered “a severe labour force shock”: workforce participation fell to 79 per cent (from 82.7 per cent in
June, and an October 2020 high of 85.6 per cent), and unemployment rose to 6.2 per cent – the highest rate since 1999. State final demand declined by 1.6 per cent in the September quarter, and overall economic growth in 2020–21 slowed to 2.8 per cent (still more than the Australian average). Dr Keegan told Canberra Weekly she believed the general outlook for the ACT was good, and Chief Minister Andrew Barr’s ‘V-shaped economic recovery’ was on the mark. The downturn was entirely due to restrictions on activity, she said. “Now that activity can be undertaken again, all the economic activity is going to bounce back.” Already, Dr Keegan said, the ACT has seen retail trade growing and an uptick in jobs in October.

Wild weather claims rise The ACT had its highest proportion of home claims caused by wild weather this year, but Canberra residents feel the least prepared of any east coast dwellers if severe weather strikes, according to NRMA Insurance’s Wild Weather Tracker, a seasonal analysis of insurance claims data. In the ACT, 52 per cent of all home claims were caused by wild weather – the highest proportion since 2017. But only 22 per cent of all motor claims were caused by severe weather – down almost 42 per cent on the spring average, despite one of the ACT’s wettest springs. The Canberra CBD was the suburb hardest hit by storm and weather damage in spring, with 3.1 per cent of all ACT claims, followed closely by Calwell, Kambah, and Narrabundah. Nearly half (49 per cent) of ACT

residents said they were not ready to respond if severe weather hit their suburb. When asked how prepared they felt, ACT residents gave themselves 55 out of 100 – well below the scores of 62 for NSW and 66 for Queensland, and lower than any NSW region. With a La Niña weather system now officially declared for Australia’s east coast, NRMA urged Australians to take the threat of a wet and potentially wild summer seriously, and protect their homes from thunderstorms and fast-moving hailstorms. For tips on how to feel more prepared, John Richardson, National Resilience Advisor at the Australian Red Cross, NRMA’s partners on this edition of the Tracker, encouraged all Australians to download the Get Prepared app.
Helping ACT in action Christmas is a time of giving, and the 40 volunteers who packed food hampers for struggling families and toys for children on Saturday were a true picture of harmony and giving, says Mohammed Ali, founder of Helping ACT. The charity provides food security to the vulnerable. This was the fourth year Helping ACT donated food hampers and toys to people in need. At the Link – Ginninderry Community and Information Centre on 11 December, the volunteers packed 200 Christmas and endof-year holiday food hampers for homeless and struggling families, and wrapped 150 toys for the Smith Family and children of poor families. Eighty-nine food hampers were donated to the Early Morning Centre for their homeless Christmas party this week; and 20 to the Dignity and Desire Street
Pantry, Ngunnawal. Havelock Housing, the Ainslie Community Pantry, and families received their hampers last Thursday. Newly arrived Afghan refugees received long-life food hampers and toys. The volunteers included local and federal politicians, members of community organisations, Afghan families, and staff of the Ginninderry Developers Group. “For me, Saturday’s experience was overwhelming,” Mr Ali said. “Everyone observed humanity in action – grassroots people giving their time to send love to grassroots people.” Labor politicians Tara Cheyne MLA, and Dr Andrew Leigh, Federal Member for Fenner, and Liberal MLAs Leanne Castley and James Milligan were present, while Suzanne Orr MLA donated food. - Nick Fuller

Free prostate screening Walk-in mental health in Queanbeyan service opens in Deakin Queanbeyan has launched a mass prostate cancer screening drive, with local racing star Mark Webber at the wheel, to screen as many men possible for the potentially deadly disease. The goal of the drive is to save the lives of 200 or more men in the region, as over 3,000 men die from prostate cancer in Australia each year. “One man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every 25 minutes but if it is caught early, they have a 95 per cent chance of survival. I want to make sure every man does this one important thing for their health,” Mr Webber said. Former Canberra Raiders captain, Terry Campese, is also backing the campaign. “Hopefully, myself getting tested can encourage everyone else to put
their hand up and come forward,” Mr Campese said. The NRL legend says he’s keen to support his good friend Mark Webber’s initative. “It’s not something you just sit down at the pub with your mates and start talking about who’s had their prostate checked, but it’s important. Why can’t we head down to the pub and say ‘I just had this test, I’m all fine and dandy’, and encourage your mates to do it?” he said. At this stage, the program is only for residents of the QueanbeyanPalerang region, not the ACT. No appointment or referral is necessary for Canberra’s newest walk-in mental health centre, which opened in Deakin last week. It provides a safe place for people at heightened risk of suicide or experiencing mental ill-health or high levels of distress. Capital Health Network CEO Megan Cahill said the new Canberra Head to Health Centre will support the wellbeing and health of Canberrans. “A couple of years ago, Canberrans found themselves engulfed in smoke from bushfires raging around us. Then we found ourselves facing the global Covid-19 pandemic,” Ms Cahill said. “This has resulted in more Canberrans experiencing mental health challenges than ever before.”
Clinical psychologist and director of Think Mental Health, Jason McCrae, said it was really exciting to be addressing some of the gaps in local services. “Mental health services around Canberra often have long wait times, so Head to Health is designed to try and meet some of those needs to fill some of the cracks,” Mr McCrae said. “It’s designed to be the front door to the mental health system. People can either walk in or call and our specialist workers will undertake an assessment process with the individual and will help guide them to the right available service and support.” To access free support, call 1800 595 212 or drop into ALIA House, First Floor, 9 Napier Close, Deakin.

To the editor Clearly partisan In his latest column (CW 9 December 2021 p10), Bill Stefaniak appears to allow his cynical partisan view of the world to dominate his thinking. His attempt to illustrate his view with one extreme example is nothing less than a cynical attempt at manipulation, and he seems to believe the ACT should not follow international best practice for the age of criminal responsibility. Perhaps his fear of the potential voting pattern of 16-17-year-olds is driven by the knowledge that conservative politicians have so frequently looked after their own current interests at the expense of future generations, and in doing so have failed to meaningfully address issues like global heating, access to education, etc., that will have so much more impact on them than his, or even my, generation. This clearly partisan column should have no place in the Canberra Weekly. - R. Jones, Duffy ACT
What are Greens trying to do? Re: Green ‘gerrymander’ set to trash ACT electoral system (CW 9 December 2021 p10) by Bill Stefaniak. I think it is time for Bill to go back into politics. A man with so much intelligence and fight is wasted in not fighting for the people of Canberra. It is of great concern that the teachers are indoctrinating the children to vote Green. The teachers are there to educate the children in things like literacy, numeracy, history (God forbid) and geography, etc. It is not 18
canberraweekly.com.au
their job to teach them politics especially if it is indoctrination. There is another issue not mentioned by Bill, but equally important in this issue with the Greens. The Greens want to increase the age of criminal offences because, the Greens say, the children do not know any better below 14. Meanwhile, they want to bring in voting age down to 16. Given children below 10 are allowed to change their gender without their parent’s consent, if they do not know when they are committing a crime then how can they know that they want to change gender? Before too long, the Greens will want to change the age to vote down to 10. The Greens are either very confused and should not be in Parliament or are trying to destroy the country. Which is it? - V. Evans, Macgregor ACT
Sensational nastiness I am very disappointed in the CW for allowing the sensational nastiness from Bill Stefaniak to rant in your magazine. The CW has always taken the controversial topics on over the years but in a considered and intelligent way. The CW is better than this. Please get rid of Bill and find someone balanced and wise. - T. Gordon, Kingston ACT

sport United lose injury time heartbreaker Canberra United have dropped their second straight game to start their A-League Women’s campaign, falling 2-1 to Adelaide on Sunday 12 December. Michelle Heyman got Canberra off to the perfect start, scoring her first goal of the season in the 16th minute to make it 1-0. Adelaide hit back quickly through Nanako Sasaki to level the scores at 1-1 after 23 minutes. Despite both sides having numerous chances in the second half, the score remained
deadlocked until the dying minutes. Emily Condon was on the end of a delightful lob from Sasaki and buried the close-range goal to seal the win for Adelaide. Meanwhile, United’s third round match against the Glory scheduled to be played in Perth on 18 December has been postponed due to Western Australia’s strict border rules. Their next home match is on Thursday 23 December against the Brisbane Roar at Viking Park.
Hodgson and Simonsson sign with the Eels
76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax
Canberra Raiders duo Josh Hodgson and Bailey Simonsson have signed with the Parramatta Eels on multi-year deals. Hodgson has signed a twoyear deal commencing in 2023, while Simonsson will join Parramatta immediately for the 2022 season on a three-year deal. After months of speculation, 32-year-old Hodgson’s future is now secure and he will see out his contract with the Raiders in 2022, with Tom Starling likely to be Canberra’s long-term hooker. Hodgson is coming off a difficult 2021 campaign that saw
him relinquish the vice-captaincy early in the season. Simonsson debuted for the Green Machine in 2019 and scored 15 tries in 43 games. Meanwhile, local star Nick Cotric is reportedly set to return to Canberra after just one year at Canterbury. Simonsson’s exit has paved the way for Cotric to fit back into Canberra’s salary cap for 2022, with the Bulldogs keen to move on his contract. The 23-year-old would be a terrific addition to the club where he managed 46 tries in 93 games between 2017 and 2020.

The GWS Giants are set to play an extra game in Canberra next year, with four matches scheduled at Manuka Oval for the 2022 AFL season. Friday night football will return to the nation’s capital in round six when Canberra’s Jack Steele and his Saints come marching to town to kick off Anzac Round on Friday 22 April. Fans won’t have to wait long for the second game when the star-studded Cats side heads to Manuka for a Saturday twilight
game on 7 May. The next two matches are in rounds 18 and 23 against the Lions and Dockers respectively, with exact time and dates to be confirmed later in the year. Meanwhile, the Giants have elevated stars Toby Greene and Josh Kelly alongside Stephen Coniglio as co-captains. Greene and Kelly will be the club’s fifth and sixth permanent captains in the club’s history, joining Coniglio who has struggled as the sole captain over the past two seasons.

GIVIT donation of the week: Experience vouchers GIVIT is currently working with several registered charities and support organisations across the region who are seeking funds for ‘experience’ vouchers for children and families to enjoy over the Christmas break. For these families, an afternoon at the movies, a day at the zoo, a swim at Big Splash Waterpark, ten pin bowling or lunch at the local café, would be a dream come true and help to provide enjoyment and quality time together. It is often children who are most impacted by crisis but with your help, these children can still have the Christmas they deserve. The organisations seeking funds for experience vouchers are committed to supporting vulnerable families, children and individuals who have been impacted by crisis including domestic and family violence, economic hardship, homelessness, mental health, and illness. GIVIT is calling on generous Canberrans to help fund a request for one or more experience vouchers and help bring some Christmas cheer to those doing it tough. To donate, visit givit.org.au/ whats-needed, search category ‘Vouchers’, location ‘ACT’. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Hot smoked salmon with horseradish cream & homemade lavosh Serves 4 1 side of skinless salmon (about 1.2kg) Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper Finely grated zest of 1 lemon Finely grated zest of 1 lime 2 dried chillies, crumbled Rosemary, lemon thyme and marjoram sprigs (4 of each), leaves picked and chopped 3 cups woodchips, such as mesquite or hickory, soaked in water for at least an hour, drained Lemon leaves on branches or 1 bunch of rosemary 8 dill sprigs, to serve Lavosh crackers 100g (1 cup) rye flour 300g (2 cups) plain flour 1 Tbsp salt flakes 100ml extra-virgin olive oil Horseradish cream 200g creme fraiche 50g finely grated fresh horseradish Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper
To make the lavosh crackers, preheat the oven to 250°C. Line three large baking trays with baking paper. Sift the flours into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook and add the salt. Make a well in the centre, add the oil and 200 ml of water and knead briefly (just a minute or two until the dough comes together). Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into four even portions. Roll each portion out as thin as possible. Cut into sheets to fit the prepared trays, then drizzle with extra oil, sprinkle with extra salt and bake in batches for 10 minutes. Allow to cool, then break into pieces and store in an airtight container for 3–4 days. To make the horseradish cream, simply combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed, then refrigerate until required. For the hot smoked salmon, brush the salmon with oil and season to taste, then rub the lemon and lime zest, chilli and chopped herbs over the salmon. Place on a baking tray and set aside. Preheat a coal-bedded kettle barbecue until the coals turn white, then add the soaked woodchips and lemon leaves or rosemary to the coals. When they start to smoke, place the salmon on an oiled rack in the barbecue, then cover and smoke for 20–25 minutes until cooked through. Remove and set aside until cool enough to handle. It’s now ready to eat or you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and serve it chilled. Roughly flake the flesh, discarding the bones, and garnish with the dill sprigs. Serve with the horseradish cream and lavosh crackers.

‘Behind the Lines’ of the chaotic year that was 2021 Despite all the modelling, charts, graphs, metrics, numbers, and predictions that became a prominent feature of the news cycle over the past year, 2021 has proven not even the most adept among us have a crystal ball. It’s that wonderful time of the year again when the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) open their annual fan-favourite exhibition, Behind the Lines. The 2021 exhibition’s theme, Prophecy and Chance, plays with the juxtaposition of the copious forecasting and modelling that has dominated the news cycle against the chaotic unpredictability of the year that’s been. Documenting and highlighting the best political cartoons of the past year, there’s never a shortage of material to choose from. Behind the Lines 2021 curator, Holly Williams, said the theme was determined after the lengthy process of assessing more than 1000 works from the past 12 months, before whittling them down to the 126 now hanging on the walls of MoAD’s lower level. Williams said the theme of Prophecy and Chance taps into the political zeitgeist while allowing for fun and joviality through a mystic bent; with flourishes of tarot cards, astrology and palmistry dotting the exhibition. The theme enables the exhibition to tell an engaging story through its design, with the show-stopping feature wall showcasing a giant interactive spinning wheel and a crystal ball. “We also really want to find a way of framing the exhibition in quite a light-hearted way, because that’s what the cartoonists are doing, that’s their skill,” Williams said. “They take these complex issues,
and then they use humour to engage us with the really dense and important ideas to consider.” MoAD director, Daryl Karp, said the exhibition sums up the year in a “very intelligent but very lighthearted” fashion. “If I was to give one message, it’s that it’s fun,” she said. “There’s something for everyone.” Behind the Lines is “without a doubt” the Museum’s most popular exhibition; a built-in audience of political junkies, families, and those with a good sense of humour come back year after year to see Australia’s best political cartoons. “It’s a very valuable and lighthearted, but deeply nuanced, way to have a look at what took place last year and why you should care and laugh at it,” Karp said. Having curated the annual exhibition since 2017, Williams said its scope and remit has expanded to keep up with the ever-changing realm of political cartooning. Last year, Behind the Lines broadened its horizons to include digital political cartoons circulated online via social media – a growing means of distribution for emerging cartoonists. Behind the Lines 2021 features nine new artists, including a street artist, along with at least seven emerging artists whose core platform is Twitter or Instagram. “If there was ever a time for people’s attention span to use something like political cartoons, it’s now,” Williams said. “We don’t want to read a long form article, we want to be able to look at something, be engaged immediately, and understand the issues.” Karp said that shift in scope has been brought on by the everchanging media landscape; advances
in technology working conversely against the decline in cartoonists employed by mainstream newspapers. “We decided that we had to make sure we were actually capturing those voices who were using the medium differently,” she said. Contrary to the cursory belief that online news is rendering political cartooning irrelevant, Karp said the artists’ ability to capture a news item with such brevity makes it an ideal mode for the digital age. “This is the medium of today,” she said. “You take those really big ideas and distil them down into something that really connects with people.” In opening the exhibition this week, Sydney-based artist Glen Le Lievre was named Political Cartoonist of the Year. “It was a surprise, frankly, I’m quite used to dancing like no one is watching,” he said.
“Despite the circumstances, as you can see on the walls, a lot of artists cartooned out of their skin this year.” Part of the online revolution taking the industry by storm, he was the first artist to display a digital work at Behind the Lines in the 2020 exhibition. Le Lievre produces two works a week in either still or animated GIF format for an online audience via subscription platform Patreon, receiving praise for his innovative use of technology and entrepreneurial flair. - Denholm Samaras Behind the Lines – The Year in Political Cartoons 2021: Prophecy and Chance is now open at the Museum of Australian Democracy; moadoph.gov.au This article is sponsored content in partnership with MoAD.

Now showing Encanto (PG) In Columbia, a young Alma Madrigal and her husband flee their village which is under attack. Surviving only with her triplet infant children, Alma’s candle becomes magical and creates a sentient house, the “Casita”, for her family to live in and a village to grow under it. Over a generation, the Madrigal children are gifted superhuman abilities that they use to help the villagers. One day, however, Alma’s grandchild Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), the only one not to be gifted powers, notices that the Casita is cracking! Like Lin-Manuel Miranda’s (Hamilton, Moana) music, Encanto is meandering without a clear point or memorable payoff. While Mirabel serves as the protagonist of sorts, it is not her struggle of being a family member on the outer that is the focus, rather it is through her that
we are to unravel the mystery of why the family foundation, represented via the Casita, is crumbling. The large cast of familial characters read like those from a textbook toxic family rather than a loving one. Present here is the ‘golden child’, the ‘scapegoat’ and ‘lost child’ amongst others, all jostling for position under the matriarch’s spotlight. If you know your pop-psychology, the reveal shouldn’t be surprising, nor satisfying, but concerning; the unfair burden placed on a child tasked with solving a family’s intergenerational trauma. Verdict: While beautiful looking with rousing, emotive, albeit unmemorable music, Encanto is overcrowded, over-complicated and over-busy with very little to say. 2.5 stars. Viewed at Palace Electric Cinema. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net
The French Dispatch (M) In post-WWII France, eccentric editor Arthur Howitzer Jr (Bill Murray) drops dead some 50 years after travelling from the USA as a young man to establish an outpost for his family’s newspaper, to produce a popular lift-out known as The French Dispatch Magazine. As per his dying wishes, his editorial team assemble the final edition of the magazine, to feature Arthur’s obituary and a sample of stories from the publication’s back catalogue. Over his 25-year career writing and directing, Wes Anderson has established himself as a master auteur filmmaker, his distinct visuals, narrative, and dialogue instantly recognisable. In The French Dispatch, Anderson plays with form. Departing from a more traditional narrative arc, the film is structured like a magazine,
a triptych anthology topped by a prologue and a brief bicycle-based travel piece introducing the fictional setting of Ennui-sur-Blasé; and tailed by a coda. While each story contains beautiful moments and stand strong individually, some will engage viewers more than others. Ultimately the ending, while by design, felt abrupt and unsatisfying; it made sense, however, magazines tend not to end with nicely wrapped conclusions, either. The ensemble cast, featuring a host of Anderson favourites and a handful of new faces, are magnificent; the film is shot beautifully; and the writing is sharp, clever, and downright funny. Verdict: Masterfully made with a clear vision. The magazinestyle storytelling, while not perfect, was effective. 3.5 stars. - Denholm Samaras

Books for the holidays
Jeff and Michael Popple recommend five enjoyable novels for the holiday period. More of their reviews can be found on their blogs: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com and the unseenlibrary.com
Outback Secrets by Rachael Johns Mira, $29.99
Those after some enjoyable chick-lit these holidays will be well served by Rachael Johns’ rural romance, Outback Secrets. Agricultural pilot Henrietta Forward returns to Bunyip Bay in southern New South Wales for Christmas and finds herself forming a relationship with popular pub owner Liam Castle. At first, Henri is just using Liam to ward off her mother’s plans to settle her down, but as the pretend romance starts to feel like the real thing, she does not know what to do. Mixing small town romance with broader concerns about modern relationships, Outback Secrets is a fun piece of holiday escapism.
Dolphin Junction by Mick Herron
Game On by Janet Evanovich
John Murray, $29.99
Simon & Schuster, $32.99
Short stories always make for great holiday reading and this collection by Mick Herron will provide hours of pleasure. Herron, author of the highly acclaimed Jackson Lamb spy novels, brings together for the first time 11 short stories from across the breadth of his career. In addition to a clever Jackson Lamb tale, there is a sprinkling of stories featuring Herron’s shrewd Oxford private detective Zoë Boehm, and a nice selection of other stories. All of them are well crafted, and display Herron’s ability to mix humour and suspense in just the right quantities. Great company for the pool or the beach.
Also highly entertaining is Janet Evanovich’s latest book about the witty, doughnut addicted bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Game On is the 28th novel to feature the irrepressible Ms Plum and, despite numerous close shaves and exploding cars, the romantically confused New Jersey girl shows no sign of slowing down, or ageing for that matter. It follows the usual path of mayhem, with Stephanie trying to track down a computer hacker, while being hampered by her feisty grandmother and her larger than life friend Lula, “a former erectile engineer”. Full of crackling dialogue, absurdist situations, and romantic tension, it is an enjoyable romp.
Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson
Your local, independent bookshop in Kingston Canberra’s newest independent bookshop - stocking a large range of quality new books for readers of all ages.
One of the best novels you will read this holiday is the latest young adult science fiction epic from Brandon Sanderson. After escaping from the human hating Superiority, pilot Spensa Nightshade is now trapped in the Nowhere, a desolate realm outside of reality. Accompanied by a newly sapient AI and a mysterious explorer, Spensa embarks on a quest to master her powerful Cytonic abilities. However, dangerous entities want her dead and they are willing to devastate everything to find her. In his third Skyward novel, Sanderson takes his eccentric protagonist on an exceptional adventure, filled with captivating battles and clever universe building. Highly recommended!
The Spy’s Wife by Fiona McIntosh Michael Joseph, $32.99
We sell pages for all ages 30
canberraweekly.com.au
Finally, Australian Fiona McIntosh also provides an excellent holiday novel with her latest historical drama The Spy’s Wife. Yorkshire, 1936. As the world draws closer to war, widow Evie falls hopelessly in love with a charming engineer. When it becomes apparent that her new love may be a Nazi spy, Evie embarks on a dangerous espionage mission to Germany to clear his name. But does Evie really know the man she fell in love with? This is an intense and powerful novel from the always reliable McIntosh, who presents another unique wartime story. An intriguing read that is well worth checking out.

Ronald McDonald House Charites Canberra advertising moment
Ronald McDonald House Canberra provided a home away from home for several months for Emma, Dan and their boys, while baby Ned underwent treatment at Canberra Hospital.
What was expected to a be a two-week hospital stay for newborn Ned, extended into 113 days.
Ned, Emma and Dan’s story Little baby Ned was born full-term, on the 29th of October 2020. His parents, Emma and Dan, were told at their 20-week ultrasound that Ned had a bowel complication, and they would need hospital care after his birth. Their expected two-week stay soon turned into 113 days. “It was a very difficult time, knowing that Ned needed surgery straight away, at 19-hours of life he underwent his first operation,” says Emma, “and then he ended up having a total of four in the time we were at Canberra.” The family had initially planned to find accommodation near the hospital to stay throughout Ned’s long recovery, and bear the financial burden to be close to their ill child. But then, the hospital informed them that their family was eligible to stay at Ronald McDonald House. “We were just so lucky that Ronald McDonald House was here really, with all their support emotionally and financially,” says Dan. “Ronald McDonald House was right here,” he says. “There were meals cooked. It was around Christmas time, we had presents for our boys. We didn’t have to think about doing any of our own shopping, the donations that were
flowing in through the place were unbelievable, to people popping in, doing your washing, drying, laundry. If you needed to sit for 10 minutes by yourself, everybody here was aware of your situation … It’s just such a great place.” Ronald McDonald House Canberra is a 100-metre walk from your bed to your child, 24 hours a day to provide support to families within the House’s care. For Emma and Dan, this was “fabulous”. “Having this place was just incredible. It was a home away from home,” says Emma. “You’d be up on the ward all day with your sick baby and the last thing you’d feel like doing is coming down and cooking a meal. And just to have that person who donated meals in the fridge ready to go or someone’s cooked and little hampers sitting on your bed, it just made your day.” It is the little things that make the biggest difference at Ronald McDonald House. After a rough day or some hard news, the thoughtfulness of other people, people you might not even know, is what makes the House so special, and its role so important. “The staff are unbelievable. By the time it had come for us to leave, they were our family. They were
here every day, just to provide that support, comfort, and to make you a cup of tea or share your story, or what was happening that day with them and they would just listen,” says Emma. “All of them were just absolutely amazing.” Generosity, kindness and understanding will always be found at Ronald McDonald House. “It put a smile on our face at such a difficult time,” says Emma. Without the presence of Ronald McDonald House, many families like Ned, Emma and Dan would face countless hurdles, with the financial strain of finding alternate accommodation and resources, the physical distance of not being able to pop upstairs to see their sick child, and the emotional strain of what would feel like an endless battle without a strong support system around them. “It’s a real family environment here, everything’s family focused, to keep your family together,” says Dan, as the House allowed the family the opportunity to stay close to their other two children, five-year-old Jesse and three-year-old Archie. The House also provided the family with a sense of safety, allowing Dan to go back to the farm for periods of time knowing Emma
could safely go upstairs at any point in time, day or night, to check on Ned, knowing that she would be safe within the walls of both the House and the hospital. “She’s not walking outside to her car, she’s not walking to other accommodation,” says Dan. “She can just step out of here, have a coffee, have a shower, and go straight up at any stage.” “If you are donating your money to Ronald McDonald House, it is definitely going to a good cause,” says Dan. “We’re proof. We come from a small country town, we’re not city people, and everyone who has donated to make this place here and actually available for not only country people but for everybody to use, is an absolute credit to people. We couldn’t be sincere enough about it.” Since 2020, Ronald McDonald House Charites Canberra has been a home away from home for Ned and his family. For Ned, Emma and Dan, the House has kept their family close together for 113 nights, and will continue to support them whenever they may need it. What we’re talking about All the latest in fashion, health and beauty. Buying your Christmas presents locally could mean the difference between a Canberra business staying open or closing in January, says POP Canberra owner Gabe Trew. “I can’t stress how important it
is to shop local during this period, what a difference it could make.” Since 2018 the local merchant has provided a reserved spot for Canberra’s makers, artisans, and designers to sell their wares under
Underground Spirits’ Claudia Roughley, with Minister for Business Tara Cheyne and POP Canberra’s Gabe Trew at the gin launch last week. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
his roof, ever since POP was a humble pop-up in New Acton. For these businesses, Christmas shoppers represent a chance to stand again after scraping through the lockdown period. To celebrate coming out the other side, and provide further incentive for foot traffic, Gabe partnered with POP favourite, Underground Spirits to create a gin that’s “Canberra in a bottle”. “We wanted a project to celebrate, a reminder that there are good times ahead,” said Mr Trew. The new Sweet Sun-Soaked Gin can be bought instore only. Gin maker and CEO of Underground Spirits, Claudia Roughley described the creative thought behind it. “Mango Bubble Tea, for the Canberra bubble. Bay leaf, for Bateman’s Bay, which Canberrans love to get away to. Floral notes for the event we all know and love. Even notes of native
lime, as a nod to the Raiders.” Attending the launch was Minister for Business, Tara Cheyne. “After a challenging year, Canberra is back in business, and Canberrans are backing business,” said Ms Cheyne. Her key message for Canberrans was to not only shop local, but to shop personally. “We already know that there are supply issues. We know that Australia Post’s deadline for pre-Christmas shipping is almost up. You can support local by buying the products that are already here.” Ms Roughley noted that, in today’s world, “we all want to know where our products come from. We want to know where they are made, and the story behind them. To be able to tell that story fosters a connection, no matter what you’re consuming, and this is what so many Canberran businesses specialise in.” (continued page 38)

the look (from page 36) It’s the age-old question of health and wellbeing: When will I see results? We ask it at the gym, in our kitchens, and about our skincare. Life-Space Probiotics + Skin has the answer to the latter at least: If you’re cutting back on greasy food to improve your complexion, give it up to six months to work. This may seem like way too long, but as everything starts in the gut, it’s not just your skin that will benefit from the following tips and tricks, it’s your physical and mental health too. Sugar and simple carbohydrates can trip you up. Foods that are heavy in sugar and carbs feed a very different range of bacteria compared to a diet high in fibre and resistant starch. Skin-wise, too much sugar and simple carbohydrates can alter your immune response, leaving you with inflammation and disruption to the skin. Nurture your gut with fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans,
creating a balanced environment signalling to the immune system that all is well. The more colourful the fruit and veg the better. Colourful natural foods are rich in antioxidants which are heavyweights in gut support. Getting enough antioxidants in your diet is part of what helps combat damage caused by well-known aggressors, like UV light, air pollution, and environmental toxins. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, yoghurt, kefir, kombucha, and miso are rich in beneficial bacteria that simultaneously promote gut health and compete with some of the harmful bacteria found in the gut. Getting plenty of omega 3 is important too - embrace oily fish like salmon and sardines that have the capacity to limit inflammation and improve overall skin appearance. For vegetarians, flax seeds are a rich source of omega 3 that you can add to your morning yoghurt or smoothie.

Seven property predictions for 2022 With 2022 fast approaching, Chief Economist at Ray White Group, Nerida Conisbee, has provided her expert predictions of the Australian property market for the next 12 months. Will price growth continue as rapidly as 2021? What will the regional property market look like? Will Australians continue migrating north up the coast? Ms Conisbee shares her outlook.
1
More price growth
Next year, we will most likely not see a sharp decline in house prices, as we’re heading into a time of strong economic growth, and business and consumer confidence is high. However, Ms Conisbee predicts we’re unlikely to see the same growth rate over next two years as the past two years. She says there are three possible scenarios which could slow the market down, barring an unforeseen event. First is a growth in the number of properties for sale, second is a rise in interest rates, and third is an implementation of heavy finance restrictions. Now that lockdowns have primarily ended, the number of properties being put on the market has increased, which appears to be slowing down the
market with a slight drop of average active auction bidders. This won’t lower prices though, just slow pricing down. Ms Conisbee says it’s too early to tell whether there will be an interest rate rise, but there will be one before the date expected by the Reserve Bank of Australia in 2024. Inflation is the key indicator to watch and is expected to be temporarily higher than usual in the coming quarters. If it is higher, she says there won’t be a 2022 interest rate rise. Further financial restrictions are likely to be put in place early next year and have already begun to be implemented, but with a relatively light touch. Ms Conisbee says the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority are positively moving carefully with this.
2
Regional shift to continue but at a less rapid rate
The biggest move to regional Australia ever recorded is happening right now and began at the start of the pandemic. Ms Conisbee says this shift will likely continue, but is unlikely to be as strong. Regional Queensland, NSW and Victoria saw the largest population increases, and she says this could be attributed to strong mining and agricultural conditions, a lifestyle shift, and
greater demand for second homes and more space.
3
Northern migration to continue
Northern NSW and South East Queensland have seen a flood of migrants since March 2020, and Ms Conisbee says this trend is likely to continue into 2022. With state and territory borders reopening, Queensland is likely to continue to increase its residents, while the number of people moving to NSW will likely slow.
4
Luxury property to continue to be a strong performer
2021 saw record high demands for luxury properties, and while it’s unlikely 2022 will exceed those records, Ms Conisbee says the sector will still be a strong performer. However, restrictions to finance are less likely to influence luxury properties and is set to drive down prices in early 2022.
5
Revitalisation of our CBDs
Set to be the year CBDs return to their glory, 2022 will likely see a rise in people coming back to the now ghost towns and revitalise the spaces into the vibrant and exciting places they once were. This will be due to overseas students, office workers, retail and entertainment returning, and will be helped by local governments focusing on getting activity back to the central areas.
6
Rental acceleration to gather pace as borders open
Ms Conisbee says the borders reopening will create an increase in demand for rental housing, as people tend to rent before they buy when moving country or region. In places where they’ve seen mass interstate and intrastate migration, like regional areas and South East Queensland, rental demand will continue to be strong, flowing on from their 2020 increases.
7
Construction costs to moderate as supply blockages become unstuck
Higher costs for within the construction sector was a major contributor to the 2021 September quarter’s high inflation, and Ms Conisbee says it’s likely this increase will continue in the beginning of 2022 but taper off in the second half of the year.

A big
from auctioneer
Frank Walmsley Dear Buyers, Bidders, Sellers & Agents Thanks for allowing me be part of an important day in your lives. This year I called 300 auctions right across Canberra and NSW and I absolutley loved it. To the buyers; Thank you for turning up and competing. To those that missed out; Thank you and I hope we dealt with you respectfully. To those who purchased; I hope you are enjoying your new homes. To the sellers; Thank you for choosing me to call your auctions and for entrusting your agents to task! To the agents; Sandy, George, Peter, Catherine, and so many more who helped buyers to make it all possible. Thank you!
To get paid for doing a job that you love and enjoy is reward enough. Those who work hard at their crafts, study, or pursuits, please remember:
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it’s the courage to continue that counts.”
Wishing you a safe and prosperous 2022!

On behalf of Canberra Fixed Price Extensions and Granny Flat Builders. Dear Customers, Employees, Trade Partners and Suppliers: 2021 ... What a year! Thank you for choosing to build with our company. When we began this business, we wanted to create a world-class company that would deliver world-class results for its customers. This year we helped more than 50 Canberra families build extensions and secondary dwellings. But it was a trying year with shutdowns, supply shortages and rain. However, thanks to the patience of our customers and the perseverance of our trade partners and suppliers, we rose to the challenge attracting more customers than ever. Thank you to the public servants who helped us through lockdown and managed our development approvals. To the taxpayers that provided Covid-19 support – thank you. Our business appreciated it alot. To our incredible staff, our Customer Designers headed by Yana; Simone and Adam from Inclusions; our Planning Managers Shannon and Raf; and of course, our entire back-office team – we couldn’t have done this without you. Finally thank you to our valued customers, we look forward to providing you with our world-class experience in 2022 and beyond.

You’ll appreciate the chance to be more spontaneous and relaxed in your daily routine. be prepared to pace yourself. A domestic or personal matter is best approached from a philosophical point of view to ensure you are on the right path and on the same page as someone close.
You’ll enjoy get-togethers, news and developments that could boost your happiness and work status. However, this will not be without some pressure as you juggle your personal life, finances and work duties, so be sure to pace yourself and aim to let go of the stresses of the year.
You’ll enjoy developing a deeper connection with someone special and romance could blossom. Sunday’s full moon signals the start of a new schedule. A change in your circumstances may be outside your control, so be practical and manage changes carefully to avoid upheaval.

You’ll enjoy a more light-hearted atmosphere this week as you gain the chance to enjoy an interest, hobby or friendship more. You may need to accommodate a fresh arrangement or schedule at home. A reunion or a return to an old haunt may bring up strong emotions, so maintain perspective.
developments early next week will represent a chance to gather your thoughts and enjoy a trip or favourite activity. A reunion could be ideal although there may be a surprise or obstacle first, so plan well ahead in advance. Aim to embrace fresh circumstances and look to the future.
Sunday’s full moon will highlight your friendships and family life, creating the chance to socialise and network. If you’re single, you may meet someone with a refreshing outlook. However, you’ll need to manage a change in your environment, activities or health routine carefully.
You’ll appreciate the chance to bring more romance, fun and music into your life. A change at home may be intense and involve a lovely reunion or trip. The more flexible you are in your response to events the better, otherwise a stalemate may be reached in a domestic context.

ELVES These hard-working little people might be small in size but they have big personalities and so much energy. They are treasures, each and every one.
GINGERBREAD Gingerbread is my weakness. I love making it, baking it, eating it and sharing it. My traditional homemade gingerbread recipe is the best.
SANTA Santa is the person I adore most in all the world. He’s compassionate, honest and intelligent with a heart of gold and a jolly sense of humour.
ROAD TRIPS
My favourite things
Mrs Claus
What kind of motorbike does Santa ride? A Holly Davidson. Ho! Ho! Ho! After Christmas, Santa and I love to head south to warmer climates and hit the road on our Harleys, travelling incognito. The roads in and around the Canberra region offer spectacular scenery.
Santa’s Workshop director Also known as Mary Christmas, Mrs Claus was a school teacher when she met young Kris Kringle, aka Santa Claus. Since marrying Santa and moving to the North Pole, Mrs Claus has devoted her life to helping Santa manage the workshop and care for the elves and reindeer. She says the weeks leading up to Christmas are the busiest time of the year but all the effort is worth it come Christmas night when Santa returns after his annual journey around the world and they relax over a ginger beer and a quiet meal by the fire.
WHALES Whenever I get the chance, I take the sleigh or electric snowmobile down to the ocean near our home and watch the whales swimming. canberraweekly.com.au
