contents From the editor Greetings, dear readers. Just checking in to see how you’re faring as we step from the second week of 2022 into the third – already! I spent the festive break in Cairns with my recently widowed mum, who was facing her first Christmas and New Year’s Day since 1958 without my beloved late dad. It was a tough time, but not without joy as we thumbed through old photo albums, recalled happy memories, and revisited some of Dad’s favourite places. To escape the heat, I went for early morning rainforest walks and swims in the lagoon, and my sister took me for a day trip to chase waterfalls in the Atherton Tablelands, where the temperatures and humidity were significantly lower. Bliss. As we entered the New Year with the pandemic still with us, I found comfort in the realisation that even in trying times, it’s possible to find joy; sometimes in things as simple as a refreshing drink on a hot day or thanking a retail assistant for their help. While you won’t feel upbeat all the time, research suggests it enhances your sense of wellbeing to find something each day for which you feel grateful. This past week, I’ve felt grateful for air travel, one-on-one catchups with friends, fresh tropical fruit, homegrown produce, and the continuing efforts of frontline workers to support our nation. Thank you.

Local pharmacies ‘doing their best’ to stock RATs Finding a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) in Canberra seems to be harder than discovering a golden ticket, with demand dramatically outstripping supply. Canberrans wanting to do the right thing by testing themselves and their families are understandably frustrated with the lack of availability across the pharmacy sector. Managing partner at Capital

Managing partner at Capital Chemist in Wanniassa, Elise Apolloni, says local pharmacies are doing their best to source rapid antigen tests (RATs), but the supply is just not there. File image.

Chemist Wanniassa, Elise Apolloni, said pharmacies have been doing their best to back order the tests, but haven’t been given much information on delivery times, and the orders come in “dribs and drabs”. “We really have no solid timing on when we will receive the tests and the supply is not where it needs to be. It’s a lot of pressure but we’re hoping the supply issues will ease in the coming months,” Ms Apolloni said. “We get occasional deliveries but it’s nowhere near enough and they come and go so quickly. We do our best to communicate to people when we do have a delivery but have never really had any notice when they do arrive.” She said checking pharmacy social media pages is your best bet to finding a test, and to continue to check in on vulnerable community members and neighbours who may need a test but don’t have internet access. “We put in a limit of five tests

per person to try and spread out the supply, and most people are respectful of that. Even with the limit, we’re usually out of stock again within a couple of hours.” Ms Apolloni also urged Canberrans to remember that pharmacy workers are all humans who are trying their absolute best in a really “tough” situation. “We’re grateful to the majority of Canberrans who are respectful to us, but I just want to remind people to be kind. Everyone is carrying a lot more than they show on the outside,” she said. “We are putting ourselves in a vulnerable position every day and a tough conversation or unpleasant encounter can send our poor staff to tears at the drop of a hat. It’s a fragile time.” She said staff spend many hours not only at work but in their own time at home trying to source RATs and are “not just being slack”. “We don’t control when deliveries

come, and our staff members being treated poorly for the lack of deliveries is the most upsetting, because they’re being treated badly for something they can’t fix. “We can’t control the international supply of an item. Everyone is just trying their best.” According to Ms Apolloni, the popularity of the tests is an encouraging sign that Canberrans are doing their best to protect themselves and their loved ones. While the government announcing RATs will be free to concession card holders is positive, she said they are still learning about the scheme and more information will be provided in the coming days. “Any access is good access, but we want to make sure that everyone gets it.” Visit findarat.com.au to see what businesses near you could have RATs in stock. -Abbey Halter

Summernats return ‘triumphant’ after a year off After a two-year gap since their last event, Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez was thrilled from the very moment the annual street car festival’s 34th iteration kicked off last Thursday. Having soaked up every minute of the four-day event (6-9 January), one of the moments Mr Lopez will remember dearly was watching the very first car of the festival roll into scrutineering. “Just having that sense that we’re back,” he told Canberra Weekly, “it

was a wonderful feeling.” Despite ACT COVID-19 case records being broken daily, patronage at Summernats hit the capacity limits allowed by their exemption to run the event. “Around 80,000 people” and more than 2,000 cars came through the gates over the four days. While losing a few vendors due to complications around interstate travel, Mr Lopez said those who did

make their way to Exhibition Park had “a great time”. With 80-85 per cent of Summernats patrons coming from interstate, despite some Canberrabased detractors, organisers and the ACT Government say the event is a key tourism driver that brings around $30 million to the local economy annually. While attendance was down on the 119,000-plus in years past, Mr Lopez said the capacity limit of 20,000 patrons a day only had to be enforced on the Saturday. For that reason, he expected the event’s economic impact to remain “around the $30 million mark”, even with reduced capacities. Despite its successes, the festival didn’t go off without a hitch. On Thursday 6 January, the event’s first night, police were called out to burnouts and hooning along Yallourn Street, Fyshwick, where around

2,000 people and 1,000 vehicles had gathered. Mr Lopez later told media the drivers of those vehicles, none of which were Summernats vehicles, were “not our people”. “As far as we understand it, the vehicles that were causing the trouble, they’re not Summernats engines, they don’t have our stickers on them,” he said. While savouring the moment and making the most of Summernats 34, planning for 2023’s Summernats 35 is already well under way, having started late last year. After 34 years, the event management side of things runs like a well-oiled machine. “She’s a grand old lady the Summernats at 34,” Mr Lopez smiled. “It’s like dog years; 34 years in events is like 100 years.” - Denholm Samaras

Expert tips to manage COVID-19 at home

Photo Canberra Health Services

With high rates of community transmission in the ACT, there is a stronger chance than ever that you or a family member may contract COVID-19. Now is the time to put some plans in place so that household members are well prepared to isolate at home should they test positive. Buy or prepare meals to freeze, and purchase pain relief medications (such as Panadol or Nurofen), heat/cold packs and rehydration tablets, icy poles or sachets like Hydralyte or Gastrolyte. Having a thermometer on hand can be helpful to track fevers. You may like to identify someone close to home you can call on for help if needed, like a neighbour, friend, or family member, and offer to be their

support person if required.

If you contract COVID-19 If you suspect you have COVID-19, please isolate at home, and get tested at one of the ACT’s testing clinics or using a rapid antigen test (RAT). If you are unwell while awaiting a test result, continue to isolate at home. You can contact your GP for support via telehealth, and manage your symptoms by resting, staying hydrated, and taking pain relief medications if required. Most children who test positive for COVID-19 can be safely cared for at home by their usual household carers, even if they are not vaccinated. Information on caring for your child with COVID-19 at home is available on the ACT’s COVID-19 website. Patients most at risk of severe illness, particularly those who are not vaccinated, should get tested at the earliest sign of symptoms, as they may be eligible for treatments that must be initiated within the first few days of illness. The ACT’s COVID Care@Home program can facilitate this, and your GP can advise you on eligibility for the program and for relevant treatments.

If you do test positive, talk to your GP about whether you would benefit from the COVID Care@ Home program. It supports patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, and are unvaccinated, immune-compromised, or are concerned about their symptoms. The team can provide access to an app to help monitor symptoms and a 24/7 contact number so patients can speak to a clinician if they need to. Patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, including by RAT, can also attend the ACT’s walk-in clinic for COVID-19 positive patients at the Garran Surge Centre. This clinic provides treatment for non-lifethreatening injuries or illnesses unrelated to a COVID diagnosis, such as cuts and abrasions, strains and sprains, bites and stings, infections and wounds. It also provides patients who are COVID-19 positive with in-person support, advice, and interventions, and is open seven days a week from 7.30am to 10pm. No appointment is needed for this free service. (continued page 10)

If you become very ill In the case of severe symptoms, call triple zero (000) straight away. Tell the phone operator you’ve been diagnosed with or are awaiting a test result for COVID-19, and have severe symptoms, and that you need an ambulance. If you are COVID-19 positive and attend the emergency department (ED) other than by ambulance, please contact them before attending if possible to inform them that you’re a confirmed COVID-19 case. Wear a mask, and switch to the provided surgical mask outside on arrival. Please do not attend the hospital if your symptoms are mild. If you need further advice, call HealthDirect on 1800 022 222, or work through its symptom checker online.

The timeline If you do contract COVID-19, you may experience only mild symptoms and feel better in three to four days. A small portion of people may feel quite unwell for seven to 14 days. Initial symptoms may include a fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and loss of taste.

Between Day Five and Seven, some people may be well on the way to recovery, while others may begin to experience shortness of breath. Given the ACT’s high vaccination rates and the rise of the Omicron variant, we are seeing a lot less of this now than we did in August last year. If you do have respiratory symptoms, an oximeter can measure your oxygen levels, so your GP or the COVID Care@ Home team can assess whether to refer you to Hospital in the Home or the ED. The COVID Care@Home program provides a kit including an oximeter to registered patients at higher risk of experiencing severe illness, and checks in regularly with them during this stage of the disease. The COVID Care@Home support line should be these patients’ first port of call if their condition worsens so that the team can assess whether to call an ambulance. If you do need to go to hospital, bring a mobile phone or tablet and a charger so you can stay in contact with family and friends. Fortunately, most people manage their symptoms at home well without going to the ED. This is important because we really don’t want

people coming to hospital for concerns that could be managed via a video call to a doctor or the delivery of medications to the home.

Post-COVID support If you are suffering from symptoms as a result of COVID-19 after recovering from the initial illness, you may have ‘long COVID’. Symptoms could include fatigue, headaches, joint or chest pain, a persistent cough, and ‘brain fog’, where you may face memory loss or difficulty thinking clearly. The COVID Care@Home team or your GP can refer you to the Post-COVID Recovery Clinic at the University of Canberra Hospital.

Final word It’s going to be a challenging few weeks for our city, and a busy time for us at Canberra Health Services. We’re ready to support you through it, and thank you for your patience as we manage increased patient numbers. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and each other. Dr Ian Marr is a staff specialist in infectious diseases at Canberra Health Services. He has treated COVID-19 patients at Canberra Hospital and through the COVID Care@Home program in the ACT.

Garran walk-in clinic opens for COVID patients

A dedicated walk-in clinic for COVID-19 positive patients opened in Garran on Monday – and as COVID-19 case numbers rise in the ACT, there will be an increased need for such a service, Canberra Health Services (CHS) say. Set up to provide in-person support, advice, and interventions for people who have tested positive, the clinic also treats non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses unrelated to a COVID diagnosis, such as cuts and abrasions, strains and sprains, bites and stings, and infections and wounds.

Clinical nurse educator, Kate Dwyer is glad the new Garran walk-in clinic for COVID patients has opened. Photo supplied.

The clinic operates from the northern end of the COVID-19 Surge Centre on Garran Oval; the testing clinic at the southern end is separate. There was a steady stream of patients on the clinic’s first day, with a mix of care needs. By 5pm on Monday, 17 patients had presented with abdominal pain, vomiting, or respiratory symptoms. “The first day went really well,” said clinical nurse educator, Kate Dwyer. “We’ve had some patients who were very grateful that the service has been opened. “The staff are really pleased to be able to support those in the community who have tested positive for COVID-19. It’s nice to give them a place to come, feel safe, and that we can feel safe in treating them as well.” CHS expect demand could rise as case numbers surge, from dozens a week at the moment to many times that at the peak of the outbreak. “Providing a dedicated pathway for in-person care of COVID-19 patients will help the individual patients, as well as helping to prevent the further spread of the virus,” a spokesperson said.

“It will prevent some COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms from presenting to our emergency departments and provide others with an opportunity to access care they may otherwise have postponed.” There may be a flow-on effect on the number of COVID-19 positive patients visiting GPs or pharmacies, but this was not the aim of setting up the clinic, the CHS spokesperson explained. Many GPs will be able to care for their COVID positive patients by telehealth. “This clinic is another way of accessing care if you are unable to access your health care provider,” the spokesperson said. CHS anticipate demand for COVID-19 testing clinics will reduce once Canberrans understand they no longer need a PCR test to confirm a positive rapid antigen test result. The new Garran COVID clinic is staffed by CHS members from the Inner North Walk-in Centre, which has been temporarily closed. The clinic is open seven days a week from 7.30am to 10pm. No appointment is needed for this free service.

The benefits of moving more in everyday life With one third of cancers able to be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle, our Cancer Council ACT Healthy Lifestyle series will support Canberrans to reduce their risk this summer. Between work, commuting and some well-deserved down-time, how much movement actually happens

on an average day? Not enough, say experts like Dr Kellie Toohey, exercise physiologist and facilitator of

Resolving to be more active is one of the best things you can do to look after yourself, says exercise physiologist, Dr Kellie Toohey.

Cancer Council ACT’s ENRICHing Survivorship program. Leading an active lifestyle helps you keep your body healthy, which in turn reduces your risk for many health conditions, including various forms of cancer. It also helps improve your energy levels and feelings of wellbeing. And an active lifestyle is exactly that – a way to live life – whilst incorporating as much movement as you can into your day. Resolving to be more active is one of the best things you can do to look after yourself today. Exercise physiologist, Dr Kellie Toohey, encourages us to do something each day to get moving and reduce our sedentary time. Kellie advises that while it may feel hard at first, remain persistent and you will start to notice changes. “It takes time to build up. How it feels when you start is not how you will feel in a months’ time,” she says. “Be patient and kind to yourself. Learn to listen to your body. You don’t need to be doing high intensity workouts to see positive results. Consistent healthy choices over time are the key.” Kellie encourages factoring in exercise in as you make plans for the week. “It’s important to plan for the week ahead; set your intentions and goals for the week to set yourself up for success.”

Kellie’s tips to get you moving: • Start small and try to do something each day • Make a weekly plan that incorporates exercise • Walking for 15-20 minutes is a good start • Incorporate small changes each week • It’s important to include body weight resistance twice a week for strength • Find what and when works best for you It’s also important to get the exercises right, says Kellie. “Programs like ENRICHing Survivorship can help you learn what exercises to do, and how to do them safely and correctly.” ENRICHing Survivorship participant Jodi Fraser recommends the exercise modules. “Working on practising exercise and building up to circuit training is an effective way to engage and get back to being healthy and leading a less sedentary lifestyle,” Jodi says. “It is really important for these types of programs to be offered when finishing active treatment as there is a lot of ‘what do I do now?’ thinking that happens.” To find out more on ENRICHing Survivorship, a program that supports recovery after cancer treatment, head to the website: actcancer.org/information-andsupport/life-after-cancer-treatment/

Kids line up for jab Rise Above Convoy postponed Eleven-year-old June Tattam was excited and nervous as she prepared for her first Pfizer shot on Monday morning, 10 January. Adult Canberrans are 98.5 per cent double vaccinated, and many have already had their booster – but Monday was the first day that children aged five to 11 could be vaccinated. “It’s a relief to be here,” said June’s mother, Emma Nikolic, accompanying her daughter to the AIS arena mass vaccination clinic. June was the last in her family to be vaccinated, and the family has been cautious the last couple of weeks, but Ms Nikolic said she could now relax, knowing her daughter will be vaccinated before returning to school. Australia’s leading vaccination advisory group, ATAGI, approved the Pfizer vaccine for five- to 11-year-old children last month; children will receive two paediatric doses of a Pfizer vaccine, eight weeks apart. This Pfizer vaccine is specially formulated for children, and is one-third the dosage for people 12 and older. Vaccination bookings opened before Christmas, and the AIS clinic has been booked out for the next two weeks. Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au

Over the past 10 years, the annual Rise Above Convoy for Cancer Families sees hundreds of trucks and motorbikes take to the region’s roads, raising much needed funds for local cancer battlers. This year, the event was scheduled to run on 13 Feburary, but has been postponed due to the nationwide spike in COVID-19 cases. Rise Above Capital Region Cancer Relief chair, Di Hodge, said, “Each year we look forward to connecting with the hundreds of families and community members impacted by cancer in our region at the convoy event”. “The health and safety of cancer patients and their families is our highest priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant and the higher risk of infection COVID-19 poses to our immunocompromised patients, holding the event in Feburary is simply too risky.” The trucks and motorbikes usually journey from Beard Industrial Estate

outside of Queanbeyan to Exhibition Park in Canberra where the Convoy wraps up with a live concert and family fun day. Local businesses and both the Canberra and Queanbeyan trucking and motorcycle communities have avidly supported the Convoy since its first days, and have helped raise funds to support over 900 cancer patients throughout the region. Ms Hodge said they’re still hoping to hold the Convoy as it is a major fundraiser for the organisation. “We will be looking at holding an alternative fundraiser if we can’t host the event as it’s normally held, but it’s a major fundraiser for us. We will be able to continue to help patients without hosting the Convoy, but not to the extent that we would like to,” she said. To support, get involved or learn about the Rise Above Convoy, visit @riseabovecancerconvoy on Facebook.

Local sailors win in Canberra’s first national boatrace The Sharpie Nationals – an annual Australian championship for the Sharpie class, a three-person racing sailing dinghy – was held for the first time in Canberra this summer, and it was a triumph for local sailors. Canberra crews from the same family won the national and junior championships, while locals also took third place. The 78th Sharpie Nationals ran from 28 December to 3 January. Hosted by the YMCA Sailing Club, on Lake Burley Griffin, the Canberra event was meant to be held 12 months ago, but was postponed because of COVID-19. Smoke, skippered by Michael Forster, and crewed by his brother Andy (head gardener at Floriade) and Simon Doherty, won first place. “It feels pretty amazing,” Michael said. “I’ve never won a national championship before, and it’s still sinking in!” The Forster brothers placed second a dozen years ago, in the 2008/09 Australian championships, held in NSW – but only 18 boats competed, and few from interstate. This time, despite the pandemic, 31 boats competed, from every state and territory except WA and the NT (14 from the ACT) – including two previous national champions. “It was really good to beat the competition from around Australia!” Michael said.

Points are accumulated over eight races; whoever has the lowest score, wins. Smoke came first in three races, and third in two more. “We were the most consistent,” Michael said. The second placed boat, Jason Heritage’s Maelstrom (SA), came first twice and second twice, but also had some lower results: an 11 and a 13. Smoke’s lowest place was fifth. Local knowledge was also an advantage; the brothers grew up sailing on Lake Burley Griffin, and have sailed here for most of their lives. “We know the intricacies of the lake,” Michael said. Some interstate competitors had chaffed the Smoke crew, saying they would know what to do in the wind conditions. “We didn’t necessarily know what to do,” Michael said, “but we played the percentages, and were in the right place more often than not, and sailed into the right position by the end of the race.” Andy Forster’s son Robin (skipper) and daughter Naomi, and Michael’s son Josh won the junior championships in their boat Priority Road, coming 23rd overall in their first Sharpie Nationals. Michael said they enjoyed the atmosphere of the event, and competing against boats from interstate. In the ACT, they normally

sail with a fleet of half a dozen boats, so sailing with 31 boats was quite a jump. “They met that challenge,” Michael said. Their best result was an eighth in one race – not a handicap, but over the line. “A pretty good effort, considering the fleet.” Noah Taylor’s boat Bangin Sheets won third place, with three thirds and a second. Michael Forster and his crew will defend their title at the next Australian championships, to be held in Hobart at the end of this year. The younger generation will also compete; they have purchased a newer boat. “Hopefully, they’ll be able to go even faster!” Michael said. Until then, Michael said, he and his family will keep enjoying the sport. “We love sailing, getting out there and competing against other boats,” he said. “Being able to sail to your best and hopefully beat the other

boats at the same time is what I really enjoy about sailing.” Sailing, he says, is mentally challenging and physically taxing at times. Besides the competition, the weather is also a challenge; the wind conditions are always different, so no race is ever the same. Michael thanked the interstate and local competitors. “We’re grateful that we were able to get it to occur, and that our interstate competitors were able to attend.” Besides the competition, it was a lively social event, outside under marquees, catered by locals. The Sharpie Championship event was sponsored by the ACT Government (via Events ACT), the Yachting Association of the ACT, Capital Brewing Co, Contentious Character Winery, the Canberra Yacht Club – Boat Club, Steve Walker Sails, Hill Sails One Design, and Down Under Sail. - Nick Fuller

At a glance Giants start AFLW season off with a win The GWS Giants have got their season off to almost the perfect start, downing the Gold Coast Suns by 15 points in Queensland on Sunday evening, 9 January. A shoulder injury to Olympic gold medallist Chloe Dalton was the only sour note on an otherwise impressive 5.6 (36) to 3.3 (21) victory for GWS. The Giants trailed by one point at half time, but produced a commanding effort in the second half, booting three goals to none to seal victory. Giants midfielder Alyce Parker was arguably best on ground with 21 disposals and eight tackles, while Alicia Eva (22 possessions) and 40-year-old Irish forward Cora Staunton (two goals) were also crucial. GWS next play the Fremantle Dockers on Sunday 16 January at Whitten Oval in Melbourne.

Canberra fall to Adelaide in ALW Canberra United’s winless start to the season has continued with a 3-1 loss to Adelaide at Viking Park on Saturday 8 January. It took just nine minutes for Adelaide to take the lead, after a clinical finish from Dylan Holmes. Chelsea Dawber doubled their lead before the break, making no mistake after finding herself one-on-one with the keeper. Brought on at half-time, Ashleigh Sykes rose highest to head Allira Toby’s ball into the top corner to bring Canberra right back into the contest. Canberra continued to push but against the run of play, Adelaide’s Fiona Warts sealed the game with their third goal. United are now in ninth spot on the ladder with 2 draws and 3 losses. They next take on the undefeated Sydney FC at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday 15 January.

GIVIT seeks vouchers for everyday essentials GIVIT is working with numerous organisations across the ACT that work to provide support for our most vulnerable. Many of these Canberrans experienced a challenging holiday due to various personal crises including financial hardship, domestic violence, homelessness, and mental or physical illness. COVID-19 has contributed to a number of these circumstances, and has further impacted many of those who were already doing it tough. Added to this is the back-to-school season, where families now prepare children and teenagers for the school year ahead. GIVIT’s online ‘Christmas’ appeal is still up and running! Listed are requests for vouchers for essentials such as groceries, fuel, pharmaceuticals, toiletries, and clothing that will assist families in need. Also listed are requests for gift vouchers or toys that would bring some belated Christmas cheer to those who have missed out. GIVIT’s online ‘Ready to Learn’ appeal is also seeking back-to-school essentials, such as backpacks, stationery, lunch boxes and drink bottles, to assist vulnerable children in starting the school year with dignity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/ whats-needed, search appeals ‘Christmas’ or ‘Ready to Learn’, location ‘ACT’. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Dad isn’t ready for aged care

Dad was lonely in the house by himself. The neighbors had all moved. He was still independent but needed a little domestic help.

1 Bedroom Serviced Apartments from $369,000

Then we found The Grange Deakin Serviced Apartments, just 300m from Deakin shops. After a little encouragement Dad moved in and within days he couldn’t stop thanking me. Dad has his own apartment, he’s surrounded by company and regular social activities. The household chores are no longer a burden, the apartment is cleaned and the linen changed weekly. Plus, the pressure of the building maintenance is gone. Dad’s now out doing things he loves again. I know Dad gets home cooked meals, assistance with regular medication reminders and there is someone there 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. The Grange isn’t aged care but I know when the time comes, I can organise external home care support to help Dad stay independent longer. Now when we talk it’s without the worry and nagging. Dad couldn’t be happier.

Each apartment comes with: • a spacious living/dining area • a kitchenette including a fridge and microwave • master bedroom and a large ensuite • balcony or courtyard • individually controlled reverse cycle air conditioning • internal access to our Leisure Centre, Murray House.

Serves 16 | Preparation 20 minutes, plus freezing time 1 papaya 100g dark/milk chocolate 2 tsps coconut oil Crushed nuts/seeds/coconut to sprinkle Cut the papaya in half, lengthways. Using a spoon, scoop out the black seeds and discard. Cut each half in half again (length ways) and then again to produce 8 sections. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the flesh away from the skin of each section. Discard the skin and cut each section in half (cross ways) to produce 16 large chunks. Skewer each section, with a stick, and place on a baking tray, making sure the papaya sections are not touching each other. Place in the freezer and freeze until solid (approx 3 hours).

Once the papaya skewers are completely frozen, melt your chocolate either using the microwave method or double boiler method and stir in the coconut oil until combined. Drizzle or dip your papaya into the chocolate and allow any excess chocolate to drip off. Sprinkle with crushed nuts/seeds/coconut and return to the freezer until you are ready to enjoy. Tips: Make sure the papaya is completely frozen before dipping in the chocolate. If the papaya is wet, the chocolate will slide off. The chocolate will instantly harden when you dip. Enjoy straight away or return to the freezer to enjoy later. Overheating chocolate can cause it to seize and it will have a dry, crumbly appearance. Avoid this by making sure you melt chocolate slowly using low heat, regardless what melting method you use.

Frozen banana popsicles Recipe courtesy of Australian Bananas. Serves 16 | Preparation 15 minutes, plus freezing time 4 large bananas 1 cup thick vanilla custard 2 cups vanilla ice-cream (about 350g) A few drops yellow food colouring, optional Peel, chop and freeze the bananas in a storage container or snap lock bag for 3-4 hours until frozen. Place bananas in a food processor or blender. Process or blend until chopped. Add the custard and icecream and process until smooth and creamy. Add few drops yellow food colour if using, process to combine. Divide mixture evenly among 16 icepop moulds (50ml-capacity). Insert

sticks. Freeze 8 hours or overnight. Dip the moulds in a bowl of warm water for a couple of seconds to remove the banana pops. Place on a tray lined with baking paper. Freeze for 15 minutes. Serve.

Now showing Ghostbusters: Afterlife (PG) In the rural town of Summerville, Oklahoma, ex-Ghostbuster Egon Spengler suffers a heart attack while fighting a spook. Over in Chicago, Egon’s estranged daughter, Callie (Carrie Coon) and her two children, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace) are evicted from their apartment. With nowhere left to go, the family moves to Egon’s run-down farm to settle his estate, where Phoebe soon discovers Egon’s PKE ‘ghost’ meter. A third Ghostbusters project has been in the works ever since 1989’s Ghostbusters II. After the death in 2014 of Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spengler, Sony produced a derided reboot. Afterlife is an effort to

get the franchise back on track in mood, tone and through character, exploring what is at the heart of a ghostbuster. The movie harkens back to the classic blockbuster hits of the 1980s. The focus is on the young cast as they go on their hero’s journey, unravelling an evil plot to save the world. Coon and Paul Rudd serve as wry, parental figures, but it is the children leading the charge, none less so than Phoebe, an awkward outsider who has a lot in common with her estranged grandfather in terms of intelligence, love of science, and penchant for bustin’ ghosts. Verdict: Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Afterlife focuses heavily on nostalgia, particularly of the first Ghostbusters movie. While this is comforting in such uncertain times, hopefully future entries will carve out their own path. 4 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

What’s your colour personality? Choosing the perfect paint for your interior walls that accentuates your style can be a tricky task. Picking the wrong colour can be an expensive mistake, so why not let the experts help steer you in the right direction? Canberra Weekly has teamed up with British Paints to create the ultimate style guide to help you choose your quintessential paint colour based on your personality type.

Retro hippie: Yellow Brick Road For the flower child and lover of all things vintage, Yellow Brick Road brings a pop of colour into your world that would complement any 1970s style décor. The bright orange has a beautiful yellow undertone that gives off an ambience of sunflowers mixed with sweet honey and juicy apricots on a hot summer’s day.

Modern femme: Coastal Sand A pale pink as a colour base just screams the modern feminine. Still simple and classic, yet girly and sophisticated, Coastal Sand couldn’t be more perfect. Pair with hues of aqua and white and your space will feel like the epitome of a young 21st century woman’s digs. This colour exudes an aura of strawberry ice cream, rosy cheeks, and fluffy pink clouds.

Artsy cool: Red Ribbon For the dark and moody artist, Red Ribbon is the ultimate warm-toned red that will transform your room into a funky and cool art studio, being the perfect inspiration to help you create. With undertones of maroon and purple, this eccentric colour is said to feel like “ruby red cherries, indulging in luxury velvet and the vast surface of Mars”.
