contents 22 Hello, sunshine! Up until this week, we’ve basically had “five seconds of summer”. And while Summer might have come to the party fashionably late, it has finally arrived, bearing gifts of warmer days over 30oC. Still, I’m not complaining. If one could choose between this milder, wetter summer and the hot dry one we endured two years ago, when Canberra was gasping through waves of bushfire smoke and experiencing record maximums, I’ll take the 5SOS version any time. Relocating to Canberra in May 1985, my first summer here was a bit like this one – damp, cool, and sorely lacking opportunities to wear my Queensland summer wardrobe. Fortunately, glorious weather in March 1986 led to my finally falling in love with my new hometown. Living in south-east Queensland, I used to think 26oC was the ideal temperature. Now, having experienced local temperatures from -9oC to 44oC, I’m far less fussy, and basically any maximum with a 2 in front of it – from 20.0 to 29.9 – will do quite nicely, thank you. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a stellar night in fine company at the Canberra Business Chamber 2022 welcome event, sharing meals prepared by and for loved ones, deeply moving cinema at a preview of award-winning and Oscar-nominated Bosnian film, Quo Vadis, Aida? (M) and Sunday brunch with a friend.

Street art festival to Surface in the city in March

Photo Denholm Samaras

Over the first weekend of March, the walls, laneways, and buildings of Braddon and Civic will come to life with Surface festival, Canberra’s first ever celebration of street art. Running from 4 to 6 March, the festival will comprise over 26 events spanning live mural paintings to workshops and walking tours. Local artist and festival producer, Britt Nichols, said the range of artwork and art

Canberra local Bohie, who specialises in hand-drawn typography, murals, and street art, is among the 35 local and interstate artists participating in Surface festival.

styles is vast, spanning from portraiture to geometric, Indigenous art, and “a lot” of traditional graffiti. The 30 walls and structures that will be activated over the weekend range from two metres up to “multiple storeys”. “It’s going to be a really, really impressive weekend,” she said. Thirty-five local and interstate artists have been invited to participate in Surface. Ms Nichols said it’s a demonstration of the many channels available to artists locally outside of more traditional mediums. “It’s really exciting to see a festival like this just to see what avenues there are for art; it’s not just around exhibiting in a gallery, there are so many other options in Canberra.” There are over 30 legal graffiti sites in Canberra, while the ACT Government regularly commissions local artists to create murals on a range of public buildings and amenities like changerooms, local shops, toilet blocks, bus shelters, skate parks, and a host of other blank canvases across town. Minister for Arts and Business, Tara

Cheyne, said Surface is a “fantastic exemplar that art is for everybody at every age and all abilities”. Festivalgoers can both observe and participate in the art if they choose to, and are encouraged to talk to the artists and even have a go themselves. Ms Cheyne is hopeful the festival will support both the arts community and nearby businesses by activating spaces and beautifying the precincts. “This has been a particularly tough time for our local businesses, so bringing people into the city, having a bit of fun with it as well, but also stay after you’ve seen the art,” she said. Minister for City Services, Chris Steel, said the works created for the festival will remain in situ “long beyond the festival”. “We’re expecting these artworks to last over the next few years until they need to be updated again,” he said. - Denholm Samaras Visit surfacefest.com.au for more.

Hope for tourists to return to ACT as Australian borders reopen Australia’s borders reopen next week, and fully vaccinated visa holders will be able to head ‘Down Under’ once more. The pandemic devastated tourism, but government and business hope the sector will recover over the next couple of years – and the ACT even sooner. Tourism nationally has lost more than $100 billion since COVID hit in 2020, said Dr David Marshall AM, chair of the Canberra Region Tourism Leaders Forum. The industry used to employ 1 million people a year, but 330,000 employees have moved to more secure industries. And despite government support, 30 to 40 per cent of tourism businesses may not survive. “It’s been horrendous,” Dr Marshall said. Canberra is primarily a domestic destination – traditionally, 90 per cent of its visitors come from NSW and Victoria – but it, too, has suffered. Visitor numbers to attractions and to hotels are quiet; the National Convention Centre has been almost empty for two years; and there have been no school excursions. International visitors dwindled, too – from 271,000, spending $602 million, in the year ending September 2019 to 3,000 international 6

canberraweekly.com.au

visitors, spending $10 million, two years later. But Dr Marshall predicted Australia would recover within 18 months to two years, if there were no other impediments (a new variant of COVID, or borders closing). Canberra, he said, could recover much more quickly. Airlines like Jetstar coming in will stimulate additional visitors, and Visit Canberra, the ACT’s official tourism organisation, has mounted a substantial campaign in core domestic markets. A new international marketing campaign could also bring foreign visitors to the ACT. Tourism Australia’s “Come and Say G’day: Don’t Go Small, Go Australia”, a $40 million campaign launched in Europe and North America, features some of Australia’s “most iconic destinations and experiences”. The ACT is represented by a hot air balloon over Lake Burley Griffin, with Parliament House and the Brindabellas in the background. The campaign will run in France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Canada, and the US. A similar campaign was launched in Singapore when borders reopened in November, and will be rolled out to other Asian countries.

Senator Zed Seselja said the new campaign was the first phase of a long-term strategy to restart tourism in Australia. The Federal Government will invest in more international tourism marketing campaigns later this year. Dr Marshall hoped the ACT would get a ‘spillover’ – visitors to Sydney or Melbourne might travel regionally. International visitors began trickling back to the ACT late last year. Besides Singaporean leisure and business travellers, Canberra’s tertiary education institutions had welcomed international students since December, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said. Over the last two years, Visit Canberra had kept Canberra ‘top-of-mind’ by working with Tourism Australia to include Canberra in key activities. Visit Canberra will host international media visits when the borders reopen. “The industry is very positive things are going to recover,” Dr Marshall said. “It’ll take several months. But it’s important that we try to be optimistic … because it has been such a torrid two years.” - Nick Fuller

Lifeline grateful for donations

Lifeline Canberra’s Bookfair was cancelled last weekend due to protest activity – but CEO CarrieAnn Leeson says donations have matched what would otherwise be a successful Bookfair. The Bookfair is Lifeline Canberra’s major fundraiser, and organisers hoped it would raise $1 million for crisis support services. Canberrans have donated more than $700,000; the ACT Government donated $25,000; and even the protesters donated money. “Our community have, through their generosity, repaired and righted our fundraising efforts,” Ms Leeson said. “Most notably, this kindness and outpouring of support have consoled and uplifted those who were left heartsore and confused when they received the news. Our volunteers work for months to get these Bookfairs up, so to know it was not in vain means the world. We are eternally grateful.” Lifeline’s 50th bookfair was intended to run at EPIC from Friday to Saturday, but the last two days were cancelled for safety reasons. On Friday night, 10,000 to 15,000 more vaccine

mandate protesters arrived at EPIC overnight, and moved into the site near the Bookfair. The unauthorised camping took up all service and parking areas allocated to the Lifeline Book Fair, police reported. Lifeline volunteers and visitors did not have anywhere safe to park, and could not walk to the Bookfair without encountering the protesters, Ms Leeson said. The regular Saturday morning Capital Region Farmers’ Market at EPIC was also cancelled. Producers and market stallholders were able to set up at other local markets. Ms Leeson said most of the protesters camped at EPIC fully supported Lifeline being there. Lifeline will not hold an additional Bookfair, Ms Leeson said, but a mini southside Bookfair is scheduled for July and the EPIC Bookfair for September. The unsold 70 per cent of the stock was re-packaged and palletised for storage, freight to schools in Papua New Guinea and other vulnerable communities, or taken to Lifeline’s Booklover’s Lane bookshop at Fyshwick Markets.

Nichole Overall is member for Monaro Nationals candidate Nichole Overall has succeeded former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro as member for Monaro in the Super Saturday by-election on 12 February. Ms Overall led Labor candidate Bryce Wilson 55.3 per cent to 44.7 per cent, according to the NSW Electoral Commission. Ms Overall is the wife of former Queanbeyan-Palerang mayor Tim Overall. Mr Wilson is a QPRC councillor, and contested the Monaro seat in 2019. Ms Overall said that Mr Wilson texted her on Monday to concede the result of the Monaro by-election. The Nationals, however, suffered a more than six per cent swing against them. Mr Wilson told his supporters: “Together, we have ensured the Nationals can no longer take our region for granted.”

Let Age Pensioners work and keep their pensions Currently, a person on an Age Pension ($25,155 pa for a single person, $37,924 pa for a couple) can only do about one day’s paid work a week before they start losing their pension. With the country crying out for experienced, skilled workers in anything from aged care to retail, this is madness. We have a skills shortage in this country and are neglecting a big pool of veteran, reliable, skilled workers who could kickstart our economy in their own right if they could do say two or three paid days a week in their previous field of work without losing their pensions. They will pay taxes on their part-time work, too, so the federal government may make money from it, not to mention the boost to our local economies. There is a precedent staring us in

the face in terms of aged pensioners keeping their pension. The CSS and I believe the PSS federal public service pension schemes allow members to leave at age 54 years and 11 months, get a whopping big pension plus a lump sum payout (for the higher up bureaucrats on salaries of $300,000-plus this could be as much as $200,000 or more pension plus over $1 million in lump sum payment - in my view an excessively generous and almost obscene amount). The scheme then allows these retirees to go back the next day, often to their old jobs or similar, on contract. They then pick up a full wage, often $200,000 or more, as salary. They don’t lose their CSS or PSS pensions. No wonder so many leave at 54/11. It is only fair to allow a good old Aussie battler, who has, say, worked

in the rural area all his/her life and retired on an Age Pension of about $480 per week, to go back to work on a farm for, say, four days a week and pick up maybe up to an extra $800 per week, especially as it’s so hard to get farm workers these days. They will pay tax on it and, if enough do it, we won’t have a problem picking the fruit or harvesting the crops. We will have more tradies and aged care workers as the older ones can continue to work part-time and still access their full aged pensions. If a rich retired senior bureaucrat can get a $200,000 pa CSS pension, plus a further $200,000 as a contractor, why can’t a retired retail assistant or aged care worker get the $25,000 pa Age Pension plus $30,000 pa

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

for three days a week part time ($55,000 pa). I urge the PM to introduce such a scheme, at least in industries that are crying out for workers. It’s sensible, fair, would boost our economy and might help win him the election in the process. If he does not, there’s a good policy for you, Albo. Letters to the editor

I guess in a way we should be grateful to O. Mohammad (Letters, CW 10 February 2022 p14) for demonstrating the points raised in Bill Stefaniak’s piece on the Holocaust (CW 3 February 2022 p12). By describing Palestinians as “the” indigenous people, they are denying the obvious fact that Jews are indigenous to Israel and have lived there for thousands of years, thus denying Jews the right to a state in their homeland while demanding that exact right for others. This is widely regarded as antisemitism. By calling Gaza a concentration camp, they are comparing Israel to the Nazis, also widely regarded as antisemitism. In fact, the blockade (not siege as O. Mohammad claims) is legal, because Hamas, which rules there, repeatedly attacks Israel,

and is also enforced by Egypt. Also inaccurate is calling Israel apartheid, when all its citizens have equal rights, with an Arab party in the government and Arabs prominent as senior judges, hospital chiefs, senior army officers and in all professions. Similarly, perhaps they should direct their concerns about “occupation” to Palestinian leaders, who have repeatedly refused to accept Israeli offers of a state, or even to negotiate further. Contrary to E. Hunter’s letter (CW 10 February 2022 p14), Jews are more than followers of a religion. Jews are best described as a people. Certainly, for the Nazis it was about exterminating all those who had at least one Jewish grandparent, regardless of what, if any, religion they practised.

Six months later, Lily had her second cardiac arrest and was subsequently diagnosed with a complex form of congenital heart disease known as CPVT or heart arrhythmia. “The scariest moment of my life was Lily’s cardiac arrest. I don’t ever want to go through that again. My ex-husband suffered bad post-traumatic stress after because he performed most of the CPR,” says Catherine. At 32 weeks pregnant, Amanda was told any parent’s worst nightmare – her unborn son had at least three holes in his heart. A week later at Sydney Children’s Hospital he was diagnosed with AVSD, a congenital heart disease that created holes in the chambers of each side of his heart. By the time Micah was four months old, he was showing symptoms of heart failure and underwent surgery to repair the holes in his heart. “We didn’t have time to fall apart because he needed us to get it together, so we cheered him on and commemorated every awesome day,” says Amanda. “This can be really isolating and scary but it’s easier with the HeartKids community. Are you on Canberra TikTok? If you’re old enough to have jammed out to Kesha’s Tik Tok then you’re likely considered “the older generation” by those on TikTok the app. It started as an app named Musical.ly, and it was essentially Instagram for amateur music videos. People would lip-sync to popular songs, sharing their videos while the algorithm curated ones it thought the user would like, displaying them on the “For You” page. TikTok today is essentially the same app. Except, as is the nature of the internet, it has evolved and spiralled. People post short films, art, political rants, fashion, vlogs, dogs, food, recipes, dances, tutorials, memes, international news, original music, AND … lipsyncs to popular songs.

Today TikTok is worth an estimated $50 billion. It has launched young Aussies like Peach PRC and The Inspired Unemployed into international stardom. Even in Canberra, we have our own TikTok-famous creators. @Chefsanddogs and @Oneminmicro sat down with CW to explain their corners of Canberra TikTok. If you have downloaded the app, it’s highly likely you’ve come across @Chefsanddogs. Canberra-born Daniel Tomas was a people-chef for 10 years before grabbing the attention of 2.3 million followers for his videos creating incredible, healthy, gourmet meals for dogs. Under nearly every video you can find the “your dog eats better than I do!” comment.

“We started with a little bit of cooking content and moved towards our goal of spreading awareness of the benefits of fresh food for dogs, wanting to show that cooking for your pet isn’t as scary as it seems,” Daniel says. “Suddenly we were getting messages from pet parents all over the world, wanting to introduce a bit of fresh food into their bowls. “Nowadays you’ll find a lot of pet parents treating their pets better than their kids,” he laughs. What has now become a successful business started off with a troubling diagnosis when Daniel’s kelpie dog, Joey, fell ill and wasn’t responding to medicine. “We tried steroids, creams, and were running out of options. We came across a holistic vet who recommended introducing a bit of fresh food into his diet, and we just fell in love with the success.” Joey is happy and healthy to this day, and often features on the channel. Daniel says while he and his partner had a vague goal of raising awareness of the benefits of fresh pet food, their ethos was more along the lines of ‘if we can change just one pet parent’s mind …’ “This was something we never thought of, so we knew other pet parents might not have thought of it either. “You can give a little more love than a scoop of dry dog food, even if it’s a little bit here and there.” Daniel receives thankful messages from pet parents all over the world, reporting softer coats, and better overall health in their fur babies. However, there’s no contest to who his favourite response was from. “Gordon Ramsey duetted a @Chefsanddogs TikTok!” he exclaims. “I have never been more excited to get roasted by someone; he’s definitely an idol of mine.”

Interestingly, Daniel also has an audience without pets, scrolling through his page for the cute pups and ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) sounds of the kitchen. @Oneminmicro’s Walt has lived on the border between Queanbeyan and the ACT since 2018. His channel is like an amalgamation of David Attenborough and Backyard Science, recently hitting 1 million followers. Under his microscope, he creates 60-second mini-documentaries on the world’s tiniest lifeforms. “I’ve always had a fascination with bugs, ever since I can remember. “Seeing something with the equivalent of a heart and a brain just go about its business on a micro scale is absolutely mindblowing,” he tells CW. Walt had dreamt of making videos that capture what he could see under the scope since gaining his PhD in medicinal chemistry but “didn’t have the film equipment or editing skills”. “Then TikTok comes along, with its super simple inbuilt editing software … It was the final piece of the puzzle for @Oneminmicro to come to life.” Today he uses his donations from the app to pay it forward, purchasing microscopes for a handful of parents who have reached out for help in fostering their children’s love of science. “The driving force for me in creating this channel was providing education. Sometimes in school, students can be disengaged. But passing on knowledge to the generation that’s coming up, teaching them about a sustainable future is still so important,” he says. “Through TikTok, you’re meeting them on their level, rather than speaking down to them.” - Anja de Rozario

sport Peel misses Olympic medal Canberra’s Laura Peel was left ‘disappointed’ after finishing fifth in the women’s aerials at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The two-time world champion came into the event as one of the favourites but could only manage a score of 78.56 in the final, well short of the 118 points she scored in the World Cup last month. “Pretty disappointed. I know I can jump a lot better than I can tonight, so I wish I’d done that,” the 32-year-old said. “I didn’t have any excuses. It was a big jump and I needed to stretch a little bit earlier and I waited until the last flip and that was a bit too late and unfortunately, I couldn’t put it to my feet. “That jump is well within my range and I know I can do it really

nicely – at the last event I scored 118 points on it so I can do it a lot better than I did it tonight.” Meanwhile, fellow Canberraborn Olympian Valentino Guseli finished sixth in the men’s snowboard halfpipe. The 16-year-old showed composure beyond his years with three solid runs in the final to cap off a terrific Olympic debut.

Tapine shines in All Stars, Rapana suspended It was a mixed bag for the two Raiders in the Maori All Stars side on 12 February, with Joe Tapine named best on ground while Jordan Rapana was suspended for a shoulder charge. Tapine stepped up as cocaptain and was clearly the best player on the field in his side’s 1610 win over the Indigenous team.

The middle forward scored a brilliant individual try and set up another to go along with 125 run metres. Rapana was involved in everything at fullback, making a game-high 156 metres but was undisciplined, giving away two penalties and spending 10 minutes in the bin. The outside back took an early guilty plea for a shoulder charge on David Fifita and will miss Canberra’s first two games of the season against Cronulla and Manly. Rapana was already set to miss the first week after an off-season drink-driving charge but will be allowed to serve the two bans concurrently. He will be allowed to play in the Raiders pre-season trial match against the Roosters on Friday night 18 February at Leichardt Oval.

Having won her child handlers’ class in the dog section at the 2019 Royal Canberra Show, Alice Warren, 10, (left) is training her Corgi puppy, Queenie, and following in the footsteps of her grandfather, well-known Canberran David Dawes (right), a Show volunteer and Corgi expert. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.

What to expect at the 95th Royal Canberra Show The Royal Canberra Show will go on, after being cancelled in 2021 for the first time in almost 80 years. In 2022, the show is back at EPIC, running from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 February. Early birds and night owls will be pleased to see the gates open from 8.30am to 10pm Friday and Saturday, closing at 6pm on Sunday. Wondering what’s on? You and your mates can explore the animal and showbag pavilions, watch the competitions and attractions in the main arena and around the grounds, venture into sideshow alley, and chow down on proper festival food like we haven’t been able to in years. The Hearty Choice and Family Food Courts will be filling bellies, while the Harvest Hall will showcase hundreds of competition entries – from bread and cakes to jams and spreads, flowers and garden produce. Brews will be available from local Capital Brewing Co. This marks the first major ACT event to be declared plastic-free; that means no single-use plastic cutlery, and no plastic straws available. A range of attractions have been announced, including pig racing, woodchopping competition, farmyard nursery, a crafts expo, an Airtime FMX team showing, and grand finale fireworks. Here’s your checklist for what to bring to the Canberra Show 2022: • Picnic blanket. Due to COVID restrictions, this year’s show is designed with outdoor lounging 22

canberraweekly.com.au

in mind. On that note, remember your shades, hat, and sunscreen to slip, slop, slap. • Your ticket, pre-purchased online. There will be no cash sales at the gate. Your ticket includes free travel on Action Buses and Light Rail services to and from the Show. Parking on Wells Station Road and Randwick Road will be $10 during the event. One Canberran you can be sure to catch at the Show is Merran Hunter, who has been participating in the Show’s cookery section since 1981. Ms Hunter declared that she’s excited to renew annual friendships and make new ones once more. The last time the Canberra Show was cancelled was in 1943, during the Second World War. Ms Hunter noted that while in the past you could watch the judging panel asses the tasty submissions and provide critique, Master Chef style, this year “open judging” is off the table due to COVID restrictions. Former Director General of ACT Government Economic Development, David Dawes, is another volunteer you’ll see at this year’s Show. Few outside of the dog show community know that Mr Dawes is an expert on none other than the Queen’s favourite breed. “I’ve been showing and breeding Corgis since I was 10, dare I say 58 years,” Mr Dawes said. This year, Australia’s top dog will be judged right here at the Royal Canberra Show. The eight top dogs, one from each state and territory, will compete in the finale on the Saturday night.

At the show, the dog section is open to all ages, with child handlers’ classes catering for ages seven to 16. Mr Dawes’ 10-year-old granddaughter, Alice Warren, is his protégé, currently training her Corgi puppy, Queenie. Alice won her section at the 2019 Canberra Show, surpassing her grandfather on her first try. A young Mr Dawes attempted to show his first Corgi puppy back in 1964 in their hometown of Cooma and had to back down due to adorable, yet unfortunate, droopy dog ears. “The Show brings the Canberra community together; those who live in the city and those who live in the rural areas surrounding it,” he said. “It doesn’t just benefit Canberrans, living in the capital of the region. There’s a million people living within a two-hour radius, that will benefit from business filtering out into the wider community, businesses that have been struggling through the last couple of years. “I’m excited that we might have a full Canberra Show in 2022 and carry on that tradition of 95 years.” Interested in volunteering to make the merry go round? Sign up for your preferred shift at canberrashow.org.au/volunteer-us; volunteers will receive two adult entry passes for completing a four-hour shift at the Show. - Anja de Rozario Find your 16-page pull-out Royal Canberra Show guide inside this week’s Canberra Weekly.

GIVIT donation of the week: Driving lessons

One GIVIT registered agency is seeking support to help a single father complete a training course and return to regular work, so that he can provide for his family. This gentleman has suffered the death of his wife and has been caring for his children, while experiencing limited employment opportunities suitable for a single parent. He is now ready to return to regular ongoing work. A recent job offer requires him to obtain a Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence, for which he is training. This licence is expensive but will facilitate employment that will provide a solid income and the flexibility required to be present for his children. GIVIT is calling on our generous Canberra community to help a family get back on their feet. Contributing to this cause will help provide immediate hope and dignity, as well as a brighter future for this young family. To donate or fund, visit givit.org.au/whats-needed, key word ‘driving lessons’, location ‘ACT’. Filipino foodies: Kain na! Filipino food is some of the best, most moreish eats you can find in Asia, and yes, I’m a little biased. Here are a couple of winners to bring to a pinoy party. Sarap!

This recipe is by Adam Liaw for World Egg Day 2020. Recipe courtesy of Australian Eggs.

Leche flan Serves 4 | Prep 60 mins 1/2 cup sugar 5 eggs 1 can evaporated milk (375ml) 1 can sweetened condensed milk (300ml) 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

Bistek rice paper rolls recipe Serves 4 | Prep 20 mins | Cooking 40 mins 600g beef rump, trimmed 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 1 brown onion, sliced 200g sweet potato, 1cm diced 12 round dried rice paper wrappers Mint leaves 1 red capsicum, sliced 12 small lettuce leaves Hoisin sauce, to serve Chopped roasted peanuts, to serve

Thinly slice beef and marinate with soy sauce, pepper, and lemon for 30 minutes. Brown onion in oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, set onion aside. Drain marinade from beef and discard. Brown the beef in same pan as onion over high heat in two batches. Place sweet potato in a microwave safe bowl with 1 tablespoon water and cook in the microwave for 4 minutes or until tender. Dip a rice paper wrapper in a large bowl of cold water for 5 seconds and lay on a clean tea towel. Assemble roll, starting with mint leaves, beef, some onions, capsicum, sweet potato, and finish with lettuce. Wrap to enclose. Repeat. Serve with hoisin sauce sprinkled with peanuts. Hot tip: Slice beef across the grain for a more tender result. Wet rice paper rolls one at a time so they don’t stick together. Switch to make Filipino bistek (pronunciation tip: rhymes with make): Prepare the beef as above but add 2 cloves crushed garlic to the marinade. Reserve the marinade and return to the pan with the beef and the onions after browning. Serve with rice, always.

Heat the sugar in a small saucepan until it liquefies and turns to a golden caramel. Pour into the base of a 20cm diameter round, or similar sized oval baking tin and allow to harden for a few minutes at room temperature. There is no need to line or grease the tin. Blend the remaining ingredients together and strain through a fine sieve over the caramel to remove any lumps. If you want a creamier flan, you can strain it 2-3 more times to remove further bubbles. Put the baking tin into the basket of a bamboo steamer and steam over low heat for 30-40 minutes, or until the centre is just barely set (test by tapping or wiggling the tin and watching the ripples on the top of the flan) and then remove from the heat. It’s best to take the flan off the heat while the centre is still a little wobbly, as it will continue to set off the heat. If you prefer to bake the leche flan Put the baking tin inside a larger baking tray and place into a 180oC (traditional) oven. Pour boiling water into the larger tray until it comes halfway up the sides of the leche flan tin, bake for about 45 mins to 1 hour, and then remove from the oven. This dessert is a ‘must have’ at celebrations in the Philippines.

3 Watson Pl, Watson Like many great Canberra food hubs, Lolo and Lola started as a humble shipping container front, setting down in westside Acton Park in 2016. This year, Out In Canberra named them ACT’s top casual restaurant. Lolo and Lola is owned by Kim Cudia, and Jay Preto, hailing from the Laguna and Bicol region respectively. Other than their signature Filipino barbecue and Kare-Kare, their menu changes weekly to feature dishes from every region of the Philippines – yes, all 7,000 islands. “Eventually!” laughs Kim. “Our goal is to provide a taste of home to every Australian-Filipino here in Canberra. We try to make sure our whole archipelago is represented.” The business ethos of Lolo and Lola has not changed since it was named, “we want to pay homage to every Filipino’s Lolo and Lola (grandfather and grandmother), to honour the exquisite tradition of food that they’ve passed through the generations.” However, if you’re a first timer to Filipino cuisine, Kim and Jay’s family-like customer service will put you at ease while you try what she calls “the original fusion food”. National Archives curator, Emily Catt, said Marion: The Other Griffin puts the couple’s drawings in the context of her life and work. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.

The exhibition’s centrepiece, Marion and Walter’s original plans for the design of Canberra, features prominently.

While long overshadowed by both her husband and early career collaborator, Frank Lloyd Wright, appreciation and acknowledgement of Marion Mahony Griffin’s extraordinary accomplishments have grown substantially in recent years. In 2013, the ACT Government appropriately named the view from the top of Mount Ainslie after her. Then, last year, her 150th birthday was celebrated extensively in Canberra via the Magic of Marion festival that ran throughout July and August. And now, the National Archives of Australia are honouring and adding further context to the woman who co-designed and drew Canberra via an exhibition detailing her life, times, and achievements. Marion: The Other Griffin is a deep dive into Mahony Griffin, extensively chronicling her career achievements while also shedding light on the woman who famously brought her husband’s vision for Canberra to life via 16 magnificent renderings of their grand plans for Australia’s capital. Archives curator, Emily Catt, started work on the exhibition by looking at what was available in their collection before supplementing it with additional pieces from the National Library, and graphic reproductions of a multitude of materials from the USA. “The idea was how do we put the Griffins’ drawings in the context of her life and work,” she said. “It was really looking at Marion’s role and then building out either side of the Canberra story.” Patrons are welcomed into the exhibition by a life-size reproduction of a mural Marion created

for a school in Chicago that encompasses the entirety of the entryway. “It’s something Marion completed completely on her own without collaboration,” Catt said. “It really wraps her love of the environment, her love of children and love of nature, so it’s a really unique thing.” While primarily telling Marion’s bittersweet yet beautifully poetic life story, The Other Griffin also features the strong undercurrent of a love story, detailing her professional and personal life with husband Walter from when they began working together in 1909 to his untimely death aged 60 in 1937. The exhibition’s centrepiece, Marion and Walter’s original plans for the design of Canberra, features prominently. “They hadn’t ever visited the capital, but they managed to come up with a design that fit the landscape like a glove,” Catt said. On display are two very long axis drawings, the view from the summit and a series of accompanying drawings. “Walter had always wanted to design a city, basically,” she said. “And Marion was always a key voice in their partnership.” With Walter procrastinating on doing his part of the gargantuan task, it took Marion giving him a kick in the pants while on a canoe trip to get him into gear. “She said to him ‘I know you can design the city in a couple of weeks, but I need to draw them and if you don’t start it now, I won’t touch a pen to them’ – and fortunately she did because we have the beautiful award-winning drawings,” Catt said.

Marion: much more than just ‘the other Griffin’

In 1914, the couple moved to Australia to oversee the building of Canberra. Walter was appointed the Federal Capital Director of Design and Construction, where he suffered a problematic relationship with public servants. Bureaucrats undermined and white-anted the Griffins from the get-go, with a Royal Commission in 1917 determining as much. Their time in Australia was ultimately fruitful, however. The couple had practices that flourished in Sydney and Melbourne, designing a few iconic buildings like Melbourne’s stunning Capitol Theatre. Walter passed abruptly while on assignment in Lucknow, India with Marion by his side. Heartbroken, she quickly returned to Australia for a brief stay. While here, she returned to Canberra for one last time to visit the summit of Mount Ainslie. “She’s taken back by the fact her vision is coming to life before her,” Catt said, “but she does lament that until the lake is there, the view won’t be complete.” Marion then made her way home to Chicago, where she lived out the rest of her life. She died in 1961, aged 90, destitute, and was buried in an unmarked grave. It wasn’t until the 1990s that newfound interest and recognition of her work and influence resurfaced. Her ashes were moved to the architecture section of Chicago’s Graceland cemetery, where she now fittingly rests alongside her contemporaries like Frank Lloyd Wright. - Denholm Samaras Marion: The Other Griffin is on display at the National Archives of Australia until 8 May; naa.gov.au canberraweekly.com.au

Canberra’s trivia king competing for world title Having been crowned world champions of cricket, rugby union, field hockey, and billiards, to name

Australia’s national quiz team captain, Canberran Mick Logue, will compete in the Quizzing World Cup final against the USA this weekend. Photo: Denholm Samaras.

a few, the proud sporting nation of Australia might just add trivia to the list this weekend. On Sunday 20 February, Australia’s national quiz team takes on the USA in the Quizzing World Cup final. Making it to the final two out of 64 national teams, Australia’s quiz team captain, Canberran Mick Logue, told Canberra Weekly they found their bearings after a shaky start in the group stages. “We’ve just had a real Cinderella run,” he said. “We’ve probably been underdogs in every match since the round of 16.” They qualified for the grand final by knocking out the highly touted English national team, Broken Warriors, who individually have won more championships than they haven’t, and feature on UK trivia TV

show, Eggheads. Modestly describing the team as a “champion team” rather than team of champions, Logue competes alongside Issa Schultz, the “Supernerd” from The Chase on Channel 7. If you’re wondering what quizzing is like at the elite level, it’s a cut above a game of Trivial Pursuit. “It’s not Thursday night at the pub,” Logue smiled. “The questions have to be able to separate the best and the second best in the world, so they go incredibly in-depth.” Quizzing World Cup matches comprise two rounds of 12 topics. Competing in teams of four, each round every team member picks a topic to answer individually, receiving two questions each. After that, four topics are left

on the board to be selected and answered as teams. Once they’re all done, there’s a mystery round with three questions on any of the previous topics. Getting started on the pub circuit young, Logue quickly began running his own trivia nights though his business, Trivial Excuse. From there, he found out more about the national and international circuit, with his aptitude quickly elevating him to the big leagues. “I was never a great student or particularly academic, my brain was always attuned to more hard and fast facts,” he said. “I’m not the best crammer, but I definitely pick up a lot just writing questions for my own business.” Read an extended version at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

Now showing Death on the Nile (M) In WWI, a young Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) is tended to by his love, nurse Katherine. Flashing forward to 1937, Poirot enters a blues club where he sees Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ de Bellefort (Emma Mackey) introducing her fiancé Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer) to her childhood friend, heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Gal Gadot). Six weeks later, Poirot is in Egypt, where he runs into his old friend Bouc, who invites Poirot to join his friends Simon and Linnet on their honeymoon. Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express blasted out of the station back in 2017. Unlike Agatha Christie’s novels, the movie was bombastic, operatic,

and fantastic, with our Poirot dramatically wrestling with his own moral code and OCD ‘gifts’. After several delays due to the pandemic, media rustlings of one of its stars - convoluted first act - this sequel seems to have lost the fine momentum set up at the stinger of Orient Express, which teased Poirot investigating a murder on the Nile. The movie was due to be part filmed in Morocco as a stand-in for Egypt but was ultimately filmed entirely on set in England. This is a shame as the CGI is noticeable, detracting from the grandeur of such an iconic location. Verdict: Following on from Orient Express, character choices don’t align, and the mystery itself is a dud. Perhaps the former’s success left such a mark that future entries seem derivative and repetitive in comparison. 2.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Aline (M) Based on the life of the global icon, Celine Dion, Aline (M) is a fictional French-Canadian biopic about the Quebec-born singing sensation that follows her evolution from an astonishingly gifted child to an international star delivering power-pop ballads, falling in love, starting a family, and all the trials and tribulations in between. Aline Dieu (Valérie Lemercier) rose to stardom in the over-the-top 1980s, beginning her career as one of the most well-known singers as a local Canadian showstopper. She meets her manager-turned husband when she just 12-yearsold, and Guy-Claude Kamar (Sylvian Marcel) was 38. The 26-year age gap is only briefly an outrageous offence and Aline’s mother, Bernadette Dieu (Caroline Rabaliatti) seemed to be the only really enraged character.

The CGI was perplexing, and it almost feels like a violation to know the supposed little girl on the screen was played by a 57-year-old woman. Lemercier, who starred in, wrote and directed the film, made the unconventional decision to play the character of Aline from a young child through to adulthood. The film is well crafted cinematically, as Lemercier stylishly depicts the little girl from Quebec’s longing for stardom, to the glitz and the glamour of Hollywood with postcard-worthy scenery and captivating shots … but it’s still just so odd. So very odd. Verdict: An unwarranted biopic that glosses over borderline paedophilia with creepy CGI. 1.5 stars. - Abbey Halter

Game On: Art prominent in new ANU arcade space

Artist Faith Kerehona’s work, her grad show project from 2021, features in Kambri’s new arcade game space, Game On; it focuses on her Māori family’s cultural identity.

44

canberraweekly.com.au

Filled with arcade games reminiscent of an era when most ANU undergraduate students weren’t even alive, Kambri’s new Game On space offers rest and respite from the rigours of campus life. The generous shopfront at Joplin Lane contains a handful of arcade games, pinball machines, air hockey, ping pong and foosball tables, while the back walls are adorned with five large-scale paintings produced by recent ANU Art School graduates, lending a touch of class and pop of colour to the arcade. One of the pieces is by Faith Kerehona, who has completed a deeply personal six-panel work featuring portraits of herself and five family members. The work, her grad show project from 2021, is focused on her family’s identity. _ Coming from a multicultural Maori family, Kerehona told Canberra Weekly she’s long felt a sense of disconnection from her proud heritage and the cultural customs that accompany it.

“A lot of the contention I’ve felt in my own identity is that I’m white, and I wasn’t sure where that placed me within a multicultural space,” she said. The project looks at the diaspora and displacement of what it was like for her father and his siblings, who grew up in Sydney’s Blue Mountains separated from New Zealand and a host of cultural practices from their native land. “The feeling of a community hub and being around each other, all the time was lost a little bit,” she said. “Australia is quite an individualised society and that was definitely adopted by my family.” Completing a double degree in sociology and painting, her project involved sociological interviews with five family members, discussing the themes that emerge in her work. Wanting to incorporate her interviews into the work, Kerehona built an AR component into it that can be accessed via the Artivive app

on smartphones. It adds subtle animations, soundscapes, and clips from her interviews – adding another layer to the story and subject matter of the work. The Canberra artist was devastated when the 2021 ANU Grad Show exhibition was cancelled and became online only, as it rendered the AR void. “Now it’s in a space where it will be a bit more preserved for a while, so my family members and stuff who haven’t seen it can come have a look at it, which is cool,” she said. With all five works focused on the broader themes of identity and diversity, Kerehona said it complements the space, which presents a chance for fun, regeneration and relaxation in a university environment. “It’s great to have a space where people can go and detox, have a bit of fun and recuperate a bit. Especially being so close to the libraries, the study hubs and stuff, I think it’s so essential,” she said. Another local artist represented in the space is Izaäk Bink, who told Canberra Weekly his work focused on the queer experience. It features paste-ups in a bright, colourful, pop art style utilising a disjointed, low-fi layout. Repeated use of a photo of a model from a 1980s

gay pornographic magazine plays with “the tackiness” of such publications in that era. “It’s satire while still trying to keep things colourful and playful,” he said. Having his work displayed in a gaming arcade was especially fitting given Bink worked in one himself. “It’s all very familiar,” he smiled. “I think it’s cool that it’s got a lot of old school flavour in here because that’s kind of where I was heading with this as well.” Having majored in print making while at ANU Art School, this year Bink will complete an artist residency at Megalo Print Studio while also doing some photography through Photoaccess. Since last year, he has also worked out of his home as a tattoo artist. He said he was delighted his work can be displayed alongside his peers from art school. “We all know each other and have worked around each other in one way or another and we’ve all got very different approaches to our work,” he said. “It’s all tying in with self-perception and identity in a crisis, with nothing too serious.” - Denholm Samaras

Izaäk Bink said his work featured in Game On focused on the queer experience in a satirical way while “keeping things colourful and playful”.

Wyrmwood Apocalypse takes the zombie genre out of the city and into a zombie-infested Australian bush.

Director Kiah Roache-Turner on Wyrmwood Apocalypse Writer and director of the newly released Australian horror movie Wyrmwood Apocalpse (MA15+), Kiah Roache-Turner, will keep making movies set in the post-apocalyptic zombie-verse “as long as they let me”. A follow-up to 2014 cult hit, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, the Sydney filmmaker knew he wanted to continue the story as soon as

the original had the critical and commercial response to justify it. “I think on the first one we just lucked into a great concept that nobody had tapped into yet – the idea of mixing the aesthetic of Mad Max with the general premise of Dawn of The Dead was something that genre fans immediately frothed on,” he said.

Roache-Turner and his brother, co-writer Tristian Roache-Turner, initially envisioned their follow-up as a 10-part TV series inspired by the likes of The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. They spent years developing the series; going as far as creating an extensive pitch bible, a fully written pilot, and a roadmap for the whole series, but couldn’t find support in LA: “We kept getting told The Walking Dead is already taking up that space”. From there, Roache-Turner and his brother decided to make a film sequel “because we know how to make a low-budget film”. “We took all of those big ideas for the Wyrmwood TV series, blended them up into a 96-minute context, and then just went out and cobbled together a budget, and here we are.” After the experience of financing the original themselves and filming it in backyards across NSW over three-and-a-half years, filming the sequel in six weeks was at once “different, but the same”. “The first time it was just a bunch of idiots making a film; I didn’t even know what those clapperboards were for,” Roache-Turner smiled. “We were just fools rushing around with cameras having fun. “To come back to it and make it with all of that

understanding of professionalism and industry knowledge, to bring all that to bear but still make it in that same, freewheeling creative way that we made the first time was just an absolute gift.” Wyrmwood Apocalypse takes the genre out of the city and into a zombie-infested Australian bush; the location a conscious decision by Roache-Turner that serves to place the story in a hauntingly beautiful setting while paying homage to our home-grown cinema. “It’s so nice to take the genre and put it in the outback and add a flavour of Mad Max,” he said. Roache-Turner was pleased the “beauty mixed with menace” of the bush found its way into his film. “There’s something beautiful and primordial about the Australian landscape that lends itself to horror mythology,” he said.

Killing an Umbilical Brother Making a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo is beloved actor David Collins, whose Umbilical Brothers counterpart is Canberran Shane Dundas. The chance to get Collins was a dream come true for Roache-Turner, who had wanted to get the Umbies into the Wyrmwood universe since making the first film back in 2013. Getting in touch via cast member Nicholas

Director Kiah Roache-Turner said his new movie Wyrmwood Apocalypse mixes “the aesthetic of Mad Max with the general premise of Dawn of the Dead”. Photos: Thom Davies

Boshier, Collins agreed to appear for free on the proviso that his character had a cool onscreen death. “He’s got this thing where he’s killed in every movie he’s in,” Roache-Turner said, “he’s got this amazing montage of him being killed in films.” Collins was keen as mustard after hearing his zombie character’s head would be blown off by a machine gun. “I think this is probably going to be one of the more spectacular deaths,” Roache-Turner smiled. The day he was due on set, Collins was in Canberra performing as the Umbilical Brothers. To make it work, he got up at 4am after performing

the night before to drive to Dural, North Sydney before sitting in a makeup chair for hours. Despite enduring an arduous day, Roache-Turner said Collins was the consummate professional. “He was the nicest guy, funny the entire time even though he must have been dead to the world,” he said. “We blew his head off, we shook hands, he would have spent two hours in the makeup chair having everything removed, then he would have driven straight back to Canberra and performed again that night.” - Denholm Samaras Wyrmwood Apocalypse (MA15+) is in cinemas now.

Book talk This week, Michael Popple recommends three impressive fantasy and science fiction books. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com Outcast by Louise Carey Gollancz, $32.99

In a post-apocalyptic, technology-dominated future, security officer Tanta is drafted into a deadly war between two rival corporations after a devastating series of terrorist attacks. Tasked with finding out who is truly responsible for the carnage, Tanta discovers a dangerous conspiracy while also uncovering dark secrets about her past and the company who raised her. Outcast is a brilliant sequel to Carey’s debut solo novel, Inscape, and combines an intense thriller story with a clever cyber-punk inspired future. Well written and very exciting, this is an extremely fun novel that quickly draws you in and refuses to let go.

Only a Monster by Vanessa Len

WIN! Book of Love film passes Book of Love (CTC) follows Henry, an uptight English writer (Sam Claflin) whose novel is a total failure. One bright spot is that the book is a hit in Mexico but when he is invited to the country to promote it, he soon discovers why — the Spanish translator, Maria (Veronica Echequi), has rewritten his dull book as an erotic novel. The writer is furious, and even more so when his publisher pairs him and the translator on a book tour across Mexico. Opposites attract and, of course, sparks fly in this romantic comedy. In cinemas 10 March. Canberra Weekly has 10 x Book of Love (CTC) in-season double passes to be won.

If white isn’t slimming, it can sure be sophisticated and sexy, as she proved at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

Looking ultracool in leather flares on the streets of LA, she reminds the paparazzi that her music feeds the needy, AKA us.

This queen wore not one but two Balmain moments to the 63rd Grammys. Clearly, she was going through a phase.

Catsuits are trending in 2022, and Lizzo proves that it’s not just a trend for skinny gals to try.

Curvy girls can’t wear loud colours says who? I’ve never seen someone look as good in orange as Lizzo at the 2019 American Music Awards.

Her second Balmain gown is giving mermaid, it’s giving early 2000’s prom and 1986’s Pretty in Pink in the best way.

Body-positive singer Lizzo has taken another step in her ongoing campaign to promote acceptance. Posing bare on Instagram, she wrote, “If you love me… you love all of me. What we’re talking about All the latest in fashion, health and beauty. Global Recycling Day is coming up on 18 March. Australia’s largest company for recovering unwanted clothing, SRCgroup, provides a refresher on the triple R’s – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. Reuse: The most sustainable clothes you can wear are the ones in your closet. On average, we buy 50 new pieces of clothing each year, with some pieces only being worn a total of 10 times. Research shows that clothing usually lasts between 100 and 200 wears. Reduce: Australians send over 800 million kilograms of clothing to landfill every year. Taking care of the clothes you have is an easy way to limit your textile waste. Save your money by familiarising yourself with the garment care labels on your clothes. Most items don’t need to be washed after every wear. Recycle: Upcycling is easier than you think. From pillowcases, tote bags, pet clothing, all the way down to cleaning rags - the options are endless. If you’re looking to make some extra cash, pop them up for sale online. Donate your unwanted clothes to charity or at a SCRgroup collection hub, where they will be re-homed in local and international communities that need them most.

Korean actress HoYeon Jung is trading in her Squid Game tracksuit for an Adidas sports bra. Image supplied.

This week, Adidas released 43 styles of sports bras in 72 different sizes, in a bid to cater for athletic women in the same way male athletes have been catered for since the first Olympics. The sportwear brand teamed up with research body, University of Portsmouth, which discovered that 90 per cent of women have been reported to be wearing the wrong size sports bra. Researchers also found that breasts not properly supported during running can experience the same level of G Force as an F1 driver. Ouch. The bras were designed as part of Adidas’ ‘Impossible Is Nothing’ campaign. The faces of the campaign range from stunning Squid Game actress, HoYeon

Jung, to 14-year-old Olympic skateboarder, Momiji Nishiya, and inspiring yoga teacher, Jessamyn Stanley. Prices range from $60 to $110. This Sunday (20 February) global training group, F45 Training invites both first timers and existing members to squat, skip, and work up a sweat at the free F45 Track Event, taking place at Parkes Place West Lawns. Trainers from across Canberra are uniting to put fitness fanatics through a 45-minute outdoor workout that combines strength and cardio exercises. Be sure to bring a water bottle, towel, your mates and loads of energy. Arrival is at 8.30am, for a 9am sharp start. Register to participate via Eventbrite.

Hotel Canberra, subsequently known as Hyatt Hotel Canberra, housed the national capital’s first politicians in the 1920s. File image.

A sprawling, symmetrical building with a low-pitched roof, the simplified classical style of [Old] Parliament House was a nod to American architecture of the time. File image.

The ‘ideal city’: a history of Canberra’s architecture Canberra’s architecture tells the intricate story of the ‘ideal city’, encompassing an array of midcentury modernism paralleled with Brutalist architectural designs that, combined, create our national capital. From the international competition to design the city in the 1910s, through to the late 1990s digital era, Canberra’s architectural history is rich in culture and classical style. Expert on Canberran architecture, and author of Australian Architecture: A History, Dr Davina Jackson, is a journalist by trade, originally from New Zealand. Dr Jackson regards Canberra as one of the world’s greatest cities, especially for its density of Brutalist monuments – an architectural trend popular in the 1960s, after the psychological disturbances of World War II, and known as the ‘anti-beauty movement’. Many of the raw, concrete buildings that were constructed in Brutalist style are no longer standing in Canberra, and are continuing to be demolished, but are nevertheless responsible for placing the capital on the map as a significant cultural city. “When I think of Canberra, I think of the great institutional buildings along the waterfront like the National Gallery and the National Library – both marvellous examples of modernism,” Dr Davina Jackson said. 56

canberraweekly.com.au

“Another example is obviously [new] Parliament House, and I actually received a briefing of the concept from the architect while it was being built – it’s got such a thorough design with an extraordinary range of complicated strategies that are impressive on an international scale.” After Federation in 1901, it was decided that Australia’s capital would be Canberra, yet the first European concepts for the city were still simply figments of imagination. One of the most popular and arguably fabulous designs was by a Canberra pioneer, Charles Coulter, which featured European Italian classical style stone structures to surround a lake, intended to create the perfect polis or an ‘ideal city’. “Then there was the international competition that was published in 1911 and won by American couple Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin in 1912. They came to Australia in 1914 to start development on the city according to their plan, and it was rather similar to what Canberra is today in terms of street design,” Dr Jackson said. “Around the same time, a lot of local architects, like John Woolman, set up a town planning association and started competing with the Griffins to try and change things they didn’t like about the plan.” Construction of Canberra finally

began in 1920, and two of the first buildings to see the light of day were the Hotel Canberra and the Hotel Kurrajong, along with [Old] Parliament House. “Conservatives would stay in the Hotel Canberra and Labor workers would stay in the Hotel Kurrajong. Before they were built, the builders lived in tent camps around the construction sites,” Dr Jackson said. “[Old] Parliament House was designed in the American style of having a low, one-storey building sprawling across the land, rather than big, boxy buildings, and a lowpitched roof rather than a high roof, which was the fashion of the late 1800s.” In the 1930s, the first war memorials were being built to honour the fallen from World War I, which was surprisingly significant to Canberra’s architecture. Major university building designs from the US and Canada were brought back to Australia to inspire the builds of ANU and the University of Canberra, along with the National Gallery of Australia designed by Colin Madigan. “After World War II, Canberra’s architecture really took off. In the 1950s and 1960s, many of its greatest monuments were built, particularly education facilities including the great Shine Dome [Australian Academy of Science headquarters] at

ANU,” Dr Jackson said. “The 1960s and early 1970s were also the known as the ‘space age’, which is when the infamous Futuro at ANU came to life.” The 1980s saw the construction of the great, historic buildings of [New] Parliament House, and the High Court of Australia, designed by Chris Kringas, followed in the 1990s by phenomenal computers that could produce building designs with non-rectangular and non-standard forms. The ‘digital era’ has continued in Canberra from the 1990s right up to the present. “Grand avenues, both straight and curved, the Telstra Tower, institutional buildings structured in classic, gorgeous modernism … Canberra’s whole plan is very important in terms of international town plans, and in my opinion, it’s the greatest town plan of the 20th century,” Dr Jackson said. - Abbey Halter Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au

five-burner gas cook top, waterfall stone bench, and bench extension that is unique to this home,” says Andrew. “The two large bedrooms each have their own personal ensuite and built-in wardrobes.” Well cared for by the current owners, this striking, twobedroom home is one of only eight townhouses in the boutique development of ‘Nest 1’, and boasts a European laundry, high-quality

appliances, reverse cycle split systems, and a spacious carport. “My favourite parts of the property are that indoor to outdoor living and entertaining is made easy, and the gorgeous front courtyard that features an established, low-maintenance garden,” says Andrew. “The property is also settled on a northern aspect, meaning you’ll enjoy warmth in winter and cooler days in summer.” Just minutes away from a range of schools, a local coffee shop, public transport, parks, Kaleen shops, and Lake Ginninderra, this highly-desirable townhouse is in a prime position.

“A large nature reserve is located only 200m away and there’s plenty of space to walk your dog and enjoy the expansive views of Canberra,” says Andrew.

‘Inspiring a new way of living’ is the perfect way to describe the region of Ginninderry. Known as “Canberra’s most sustainable suburb”, it will one day be home to around 30,000 people with an eventual total of 11,500 homes. Ginninderry Project Director, Steve Harding, said the suburb is an internationally renowned community that recently scored a rating of 84/100 in their recertification as an Australian Green Star Community. With construction beginning in 2016, Ginninderry welcomed its first residents in early 2020 and the suburb is set to be a 30-year project. A shopping centre is approximately five to six years away from being built and, until then, Kippax Fair Shopping Centre is five minutes down the road. Every home built in the area is required to have 40mw solar panels installed and no gas connection. There’s a range of housing available including “Missing

Middle Housing” – homes with the scale of a house but are multiple units instead. The main roads all have a dedicated off-road bike path to promote more active travel within the community. There’s a regular bus that loops to Kippax for the residents’ convenience, and the roads are made from Reconophalt, which is asphalt manufactured from recycled soft plastics, glass, and toner cartridges that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. All of the homes have the option of free front landscaping with different, flexible concepts for the owners including native, contemporary, and edible gardens. Additionally, community gardens are being rolled out throughout the development and those already established are “well and truly utilised”, Mr Harding said. If you’re at Strathnairn, be sure to visit the Link Building to explore the Art Space, check out the native garden beds, and learn about sustainable living. With views across the Brindabellas and the surrounding Murrumbidgee River and Ginninderra Creek, the Ginninderry community value their environmental conservation, which is why 78 per cent of all the trees in the area have been preserved during the building process to protect local wildlife and culturally significant areas.

Jumping Creek Queanbeyan NSW Ellerton Drive The upcoming suburban oasis, Jumping Creek, is set to be developed in a picturesque environment where you can discover the stunning natural landscape without sacrificing any inner suburban conveniences and comforts. A joint venture by PEET and Ian McNamee & Partners, this golden opportunity to own your very own spacious plot of land is not to be missed. Chairman of Ian McNamee & Partners, Ian McNamee, says the development will give buyers the freedom to build a spacious, custom-built home designed to be their very own sanctuary. “Jumping Creek is tucked away in a hidden valley, only a stone’s throw from Queanbeyan and Civic, in a location that has never been available before now,” says Mr McNamee. “The recently completed Ellerton Drive has opened access to this unique location, nestled on the north-eastern side of the Queanbeyan River. Just 200 blocks are available in this new suburb.” The blocks range from 600sqm to a massive 3,158sqm, averaging

around 780sqm – boasting the largest suburban blocks in the ACT region. “It has just such a beautiful rural, bush outlook and will be a small community of just around 500 people. Queanbeyan CBD is only three minutes away, Canberra CBD is 15 minutes away, and in under two hours you’ll be at the gorgeous coast,” says Mr McNamee. “Based on the premium nature of the development, and the large block sizes, Jumping Creek will suit second and third home owners who are looking to build a custom designed home.”

McGrath Estate Agents Canberra agent profile

JUSTIN TAYLOR DIMI ROMERO

&

THE DREAM TEAM Not only are they at the top of the list of Canberra’s finest real estate agents, McGrath’s Justin Taylor and Dimi Romero are more than just your average salespeople – they genuinely care about their clients. With a combined 29 years’ experience in Canberra real estate, Justin and Dimi are undoubtedly the real deal.

J

ustin and Dimi sat down with Canberra Weekly to talk about why they love working in real estate, how they manage to have such a successful working relationship, and what any potential client can expect from them as their agents.

What would you like Canberrans to know about you? Justin: “I’ve lived in Canberra for over 40 years and went to school at Cook Primary, Evatt Primary and St Edmunds College. I’ve been in real estate for 19 years now, and I’ve met an incredible amount of great people in this industry, as well as lifelong friends. “I always wanted to be a professional golfer, and my stepfather (Kel Hellier) owned Hellier’s Golf Centre where I worked for many

years, and that’s where my love of customer service began. People who know me, know I’m pretty genuine.” Dimi: “I grew up in Canberra and I have always worked in customer service-based roles, however real estate is the one industry I always kept coming back to. I have three beautiful children and they are my reason why: Esperanza, 17, Angelina, 15, and Jaspar, 8. I am also a step-mum to Liam, 8, and Sierra, 13, so you could say we are a little Brady Bunch family. The best thing I like about real estate is the fast pace – I don’t like being bored and I love getting to meet so many different people all the time. “I started from the bottom and worked hard to get where I am today. Justin deserves a lot of credit for this; he took me under his wing all those

Hand on heart, I wake up every day excited to do what I do … I actually really love my job and working with the team at McGrath. – Dimi Romero years ago and since that day, I have learnt so much as a (person and) real estate agent. He showed tremendous belief in me, which I am immensely grateful for.”

Why did you decide to enter real estate? Dimi: “I actually started a real estate traineeship in Year 11. School just

wasn’t for me, and I just knew real estate was all I wanted to do … I had such a passion for it even back then. “I started at Elders and worked my way up from an office all-rounder to sales coordinator, and then Justin and McGrath gave me the opportunity and security I needed to take the leap into sales. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made, both

personally and professionally.” Justin: “It was in 2003 when I made the decision to change careers from playing and teaching golf and jump into real estate. However, I was always interested in it – three of my mates from school all have really successful careers in real estate. “I’ve always loved sales, and I’m really passionate about it. Providing customer service has always come naturally to me and it’s really rewarding to see your hard work pay off in the end results and making my

clients happy. “I have also been fortunate to have, right from the start of my real estate career, my wife Laura who has been super supportive and understanding of the long hours, and 7 days a week work.”

What can prospective clients expect from you as their agents? Justin: “I’m a very straight shooter and you can expect 110 per cent dedication and commitment to getting the best possible result. You

won’t ever get any pressure from us to accept offers you’re not happy with, and you can expect to be treated like you’re my best friend or family member.” Dimi: “Both Justin and I are big believers in treating our clients in the best way we possibly can. You can expect transparent and reliable feedback and advice, and we treat everyone like they’re a family member. Whether you’re a buyer or you’re selling with us, we will give it our all.”

How do you have such a great working relationship with each other? Dimi: “The main reason I wanted to work with Justin was because he just has such a good reputation. Everyone I’ve ever met has never said a bad thing about him! We both have

similar work ethics, have similar values, and treat our clients in the same way. “We’ve been working together since 2017, and I will work with him until he retires … I have no desire to break away. There is still so much I have to learn from him.” Justin: “We work very well together, and it’s rare and hard to find a sales partner as great as Dimi! “I just want to also add, that if any new agents or people who are looking to get into real estate want to have a chat to receive some advice or guidance, please reach out! I’m more than happy to help.”

FAMILY I love my family – the one I grew up in and the one I have had the privilege of raising, plus “my American family” who hosted me as an exchange student in California in 1978/79.

MANGOES The most delicious food on the planet. Closely followed by the native macadamia nut, avocadoes, and all stone fruits. Thank you, Mother Nature.

TEA

Photo Kerrie Brewer

Next to water, tea is my favourite drink: hot in winter, iced in summer, herbal after noon. I’ve also accumulated a collection of tea paraphernalia over the years, including my late grandmothers’ vintage teacups.

My favourite things

Julie Samaras

ANIMALS Animals have nearly always been in my life – from dogs and the occasional cat, bird and horse, to chickens, cows and sheep. We lost our beloved mini poodle, Mabel (pictured) in 2019 and while I haven’t had the heart to adopt another pet, we enjoy pet-sitting for family, friends and neighbours.

Canberra Weekly founding editor Having grown up in Queensland, Julie moved to Canberra in 1985 for work and love. She has fallen in love with the national capital over the past 30-plus years and her two sons were born here in the 1990s. Canberra has become her favourite place to live, not only because of the beauty of the seasons and the easy-going lifestyle but also because the people here are amongst the most generous in Australia, frequently topping the charts for volunteering and philanthropy. Julie began her career in journalism in 1980. Upon becoming founding editor in 2009 of Canberra Weekly, which is owned and operated by the Samaras family, Julie finally realised what it is she wants to be when she grows up. “I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF I’ve been fortunate to travel around the world (pre-pandemic), yet the most awesome experience has been snorkelling off the pristine Frankland Islands near Cairns, swimming with tropical fish darting amongst the coral, a green turtle nearby. It is truly a natural wonder worth protecting. canberraweekly.com.au
