contents 14 It’s autumn already! My favourite season in Canberra. What’s yours? In this week’s edition, you’ll find a 10-page seniors feature. I mention it because last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting an inspirational 93-year-old gentleman (94 next month) from Sydney who was visiting dear friends in Canberra. His son recently bought him a Rolls Royce (which apparently was owned by Prince Phillip on the Falkland Islands), and the pair decided to take it for a spin down the Hume, with Dad taking the wheel for much of the journey. With sparkling eyes and enviable skin, he regaled us with jokes and tales of this youth; he plays social tennis and attends Scottish country dancing every week, which he’s done since 1967, and regularly shares his hearty homecooked meals with single friends who can’t be bothered cooking anymore; he and his late wife always avoided processed foods. So many tips for a long and happy life. Reasons to be grateful this past week include my first (much-needed) haircut in 10 months, much-needed hilarity at Judith Lucy and Denise Scott’s Still Here show at Canberra Theatre, sharing a scintillating night of brilliant musical theatre at Ruthless! at The Q in Queanbeyan, sharing a delicious Sky High Tea at QT Canberra, a coffee catchup with a friend recently returned from overseas, and a nourishing afternoon with friends old and new.

Canberra tenant launches petition after ‘distressing’ eviction A Canberra academic and former local university lecturer has launched a petition on behalf of struggling renters in the ACT, who, he says, have no current protections for their dignity. In his petition, Adam Hughes Henry is proposing that a new clause be added into standard tenancy agreements that he submits as the ‘Well Being Clause’. The Well Being Clause outlines protections for tenants to be upheld by landlords and rental agencies to protect the human rights of renters. Mr Hughes Henry said the idea for the petition was sparked after he received a notice to vacate his property shortly after last year’s lockdown. “It was pretty distressing. We were given a notice to vacate one week after lockdown because the landlord wanted to move back in, and we applied for lots of places with no luck. It was a serious possibility that myself, my wife, our two children, and my 79-year-old mother

were all going to be homeless,” he said. The online petition currently has over 11,000 signatures and this week was sponsored as an e-Petition in the ACT Legislative Assembly by ACT Greens Member Andrew Braddock. In response to the petition and Mr Hughes Henry’s experience, an ACT Government spokesperson said the current approach towards a landlord’s rights to end a tenancy “strikes a balance” between the ability for landlords to utilise their asset as they see fit and certainty for tenants. “The proposed ‘Well Being Clause’ is not currently contemplated and it is unlikely to strike an appropriate balance between the interests of landlords and tenants,” the spokesperson said. Mr Braddock said he disagreed with the ACT Government’s view and was hopeful his ACT Greens colleagues would support the petition. “I do disagree with the statement that ‘it’s unlikely to strike an appropriate balance’. There

has to be greater consideration for tenants,” Mr Braddock said. “Of course, landlords have rights and that needs to be respected, but there needs to be an understanding how landlords’ decisions can impact tenants.” Mr Hughes Henry’s petition is online at epetitions.act.gov.au. More than 500 firearms surrendered in ACT Canberrans have handed in 500 firearms in the first phase of the National Firearms Amnesty that began last year. But there are still more dangerous weapons out there, the police say. The amnesty began in July, allowing the public to hand in unregistered or illegal firearms, parts, or ammunition to the police without penalty for registration, sale, or destruction. In phase two, the public are urged to let police or Crime Stoppers ACT (1800 333 000 or online) know when they believe someone has an illegal or unregistered firearm. Callers can remain anonymous. “We know there are people in our community who have this information,” said Mick Gentleman,

ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services. “I urge them to come forward and provide it.” Firearms can be used for a raft of crimes from murder to armed robbery, said Neil Gaughan, Chief Police Officer for the ACT – and have been used in those type of crimes in the ACT over the past 12 months. “Unless we remove firearms from the streets, we’re going to continue to see that,” he said. Oliver Forrester, Crime Stoppers ACT’s chair, urged Canberrans to think how they would feel if they stayed silent about an illegal gun which later harmed or killed someone. “If people don’t share the information … there is a real potential that firearms can fall into the wrong hands,” he said – from organised crime groups to individual criminals. “Criminals often go to great lengths to obtain a firearm illegally and then conceal it from authorities, so it’s unlikely they would go to that effort unless they are prepared to use it.” Last month, police seized a loaded rifle and more than 100 rounds of ammunition from a protester’s car, as a result of information from a member of the public. Flamethrowers, rocket-launchers, and World War II revolvers are among the firearms surrendered since July, as well as prohibited

gel blasters and BB guns that resemble real weapons. The guns will be destroyed, shredded mostly, said Detective Sergeant Toby Seppings, from the ACT Firearms Registry. “They won’t ever have a chance of making it back onto the street.” The amnesty will continue for another couple of months. Mr Gentleman wants to make the amnesty permanent in the ACT. If people find a gun in a deceased estate or when cleaning house, for instance, it would not be a penalty to drop the weapon into the police. “Utopia would be no firearms on the streets,” Mr Gaughan said. “That’s not going to be achieved, but every firearm handed in makes a significant difference.” The ACT’s National Firearm Amnesty surrender location is the ACT Policing Firearms Registry at the Exhibition Management Centre, 86 Vicars Street, Mitchell. Being caught with an unregistered or illegal firearm outside amnesty could lead to a fine, imprisonment, or criminal record. ACT and NSW police and Crime Stoppers ACT will hold an information stand about the National Firearms Amnesty in Queanbeyan later this month. - Nick Fuller

Show defies odds Against the odds, the Royal Canberra Show achieved record-breaking attendance over the weekend, 2527 February, attracting a crowd upwards of 40,000 people. On its flagship reopening after the 2021 cancellation due to Covid, heavy rain then foreshadowed continuous bad luck for the Canberra Show and all its participants. On the last night of the Show, Sunday 27 February, ACT Emergency Services even issued a warning about flood waters, after some local roads were closed due to flooding. Still, Canberrans drove slowly and safely, or wrapped themselves in raincoats to board the light rail to EPIC, to show love on a damp February weekend. The Royal National Capital Agricultural Society reported the 2022 Royal Canberra Show was a roaring success.

On top of the crowd, the Show welcomed record horse and cattle entries with competitors travelling from as far as Tasmania, Far North Queensland, and South Australia to compete. In its 95th year, the Royal Canberra Show reached its best Sunday in 15 years, in both ticket sales and attendance. President Rick Jones described a vibrant mix of “city meeting country” over its course. “During the day, crowds were treated to woodchop, milking and shearing demonstrations, and racing pigs. At night-time, they cheered on freestyle motocross riders doing tricks mid-air ... lawn mower races, and fireworks. And the rain didn’t appear to deter patrons.” The 2023 Royal Canberra Show is scheduled for 24-26 February. - Anja de Rozario

Ukrainian Canberrans ‘devastated and heartbroken’ Canberrans have been sending flowers and messages of solidarity to the ACT Ukrainian community, whose members are reportedly “devastated and heartbroken”. Jay Moran, volunteer with Amnesty International ACT/SNSW has long been monitoring the situation in Ukraine and spoke with Canberra Weekly about the Russian invasion that is underway. “Prior to this invasion, I’ve been campaigning closely with Ukrainian NGOs for LGBTQI+ rights and have had a close relationship with some of the people I worked with,” Ms Moran said. “I worry for their safety. I haven’t been able to have any contact with them, but I’ve seen their organisation be active on social media. I think as individuals they’ve gone into bunkers to try and wait it out. It’s really scary.”

As part of the local Amnesty group leadership committee, Ms Moran is organising a vigil for Canberrans to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine. She said everyone in Canberra she has contacted to be involved with the vigil have been “super keen” to lend a hand and show their support. “The Canberra Ukrainian community needs to speak for themselves, but I’ve spoken to the head of the parish at the Ukrainian Orthodox Centre, and he’s devastated and heartbroken,” Ms Moran said. “He said some of the older generation have been through similar situations in the past, and my heart was just breaking speaking to him.” The Vigil for Ukraine will be held on Friday 11 March 5.30pm at the Rotary Peace Bell, Yarralumla. - Abbey Halter

Drug laws must keep our kids safe As all parents know, parenting comes with many stresses and fears. The questions about your child’s future are endless. But all parents hope and pray that they raise children who will stay away from drugs and self-harm. Raise children who will make sound life choices. The government’s job is to support parents and make sure that the best decisions are made to keep our children and our broader society safe. Unfortunately, the local ACT Labor-Greens Government want to make changes to our drug laws that go against the very instinct of keeping our kids safe. They are close to decriminalising hard drugs such as heroin and ice. This is also the push of the Federal Greens, and is supported by Federal Labor MPs, like our local Member, Alicia Payne MP. The Federal Police Commissioner, Reece Kershaw, has been on the record now on multiple occasions warning of the dangers that come with progressing radical drug policy. Commissioner Kershaw highlighted it comes with increased crime, including domestic

10

violence, assaults, and murder. When reflecting on the effect it would have on the police force, he said: “My view would be that it would be a far more dangerous environment to police ... For me it would lead to chaos.” We are talking about hard drugs. We are talking about heroin and ice. Substances that initiate ice-fuelled rages that lead to countless abhorrent crimes. One emergency department nurse and paramedic, Jane, said the effects of ice were unlike any other drugs she had come across in her career. “They are volatile and unpredictable. You think you have them on side and then they can just snap – and you’re being spat at or kicked or threatened to have your throat cut,” she said. Supporters of these radical changes who often cite overseas experience as the gold standard should heed the warning from the AFP Commissioner. Commissioner Kershaw has first-hand experience, having spent time in countries with more relaxed drug laws. “It creates narco-

tourism, meaning all the organised crime decided to set up in those areas,” he said. He warned that “It is going to mean that organised crime will want to target this community in particular”. In all decisions governments take, there are flow-on effects for the community. It has always been the case – if you want less of something, tighten regulations or increase taxes. If you want more of something, you do the opposite: decrease regulation or decrease taxes. Why would you decrease regulation if you want less drugs on our streets? If you remove fear of legal prosecution, there is little stopping someone dipping their toe in the water to experiment with what are incredibly dangerous and addictive substances. It will increase drug use amongst young Canberrans. It will make our city less safe, and it is simply not a policy I can support. I’m keen to hear from you on this topic. Please email me via senator.seselja@aph.gov.au or sign my petition at www.zedseselja.com.au/stop_hard_ drugs_being_decriminalised

Compulsory acquisition of energy assets Firstly, all freedom loving countries and people around the world should be offering their assistance to the heroic freedom fighters of the Ukraine, led by their inspiring leader President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in their struggle against the brutal Russian imperialist invaders. Zelenskyy is surely the most impressive world leader with a show business background since Ronald Reagan. It is also good to see the West get more serious with better sanctions and the supply of increased lethal aid to help stop Putin’s forces. What this conflict also demonstrates very clearly is the need for Australia to be energy secure. The delusional Western Europeans, led by Germany and more recently a flaky Boris Johnston, have gone helter-skelter into embracing renewables and sacrificing perfectly good baseload power like nuclear power stations in Germany’s case 10 years ago to pander to the German Greens - and to replace this baseload power with unreliable renewables that did not work this European winter when the sun didn’t shine and the wind didn’t blow. Over-reliance on Russian oil and gas had Germany

over a barrel when it came to having to stand up to Russia these last few weeks. China and Russia continue to build coal-fired power stations and use gas. China is building another 245 coal-fired power stations. It uses them to make wind turbines and solar panels which it exports to Australia, who then closes down perfectly good coal-fired power stations which still have many years to run. How stupid are we? Now we see mega rich woke billionaires wanting to take over energy suppliers like AGL just to shut down reliable power stations early and destroy our baseload power. If we don’t have reliable electricity we can’t run our country, we can’t manufacture, nor heat or cool our homes. We can’t defend ourselves. No one has invented a reliable system of storage of renewable power yet. I believe we need to investigate all sources of power, especially nuclear, and not close down reliable baseload power stations until they can be replaced with an energy source that works 24/7. The federal government needs to use such powers as the defence power (see section 51 of the

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

Constitution) to compulsorily acquire any electricity producing asset that some rich lunatic wants to buy just to close it down. Indeed, I think Morrison needs to either compulsorily acquire all our energy assets and/or nationalise them, whatever works best. It’s too important to just leave to market forces, which can be corrupted, misused and distorted. Finally, back to Russia, I see Putin is threatening nuclear war. He really has lost his marbles and I would hope his normally pliant generals will intervene and/or the only person he listens to, President Xi, can reign him in. Xi, whilst ruthless, seems an eminently practical man who wants a world left in one piece for him to dominate, not a pile of radioactive rubble. Dad isn’t ready for aged care

Dad was lonely in the house by himself. The neighbors had all moved. He was still independent but needed a little domestic help.

1 Bedroom Serviced Apartments from $369,000

Then we found The Grange Deakin Serviced Apartments, just 300m from Deakin shops. After a little encouragement Dad moved in and within days he couldn’t stop thanking me. Dad has his own apartment, he’s surrounded by company and regular social activities. The household chores are no longer a burden, the apartment is cleaned and the linen changed weekly. Plus, the pressure of the building maintenance is gone. Dad’s now out doing things he loves again. I know Dad gets home cooked meals, assistance with regular medication reminders and there is someone there 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. The Grange isn’t aged care but I know when the time comes, I can organise external home care support to help Dad stay independent longer. Now when we talk it’s without the worry and nagging. Dad couldn’t be happier.

Each apartment comes with: • a spacious living/dining area • a kitchenette including a fridge and microwave • master bedroom and a large ensuite • balcony or courtyard • individually controlled reverse cycle air conditioning • internal access to our Leisure Centre, Murray House.

The Relay of Positive Penny’s Life Meeting 32-year-old Penny Jackson is a memorable experience. Her dazzling smile lights up the room, and her infectious belly laugh fills any empty space. With her ever-positive demeanour, it’s almost impossible to imagine that just four months ago, Penny was fighting for her life against an aggressive cancer. “I distinctively remember that it was Christmas Eve [2020] when this all started. I was shopping with my sister, and she was talking to me, and I got these really bad pains in my chest, and they did go away, but something just kind of lingered with me,” recalls Penny. Christmas came and went, and Penny noticed some peculiar lumps appearing on her legs. A skin specialist told her they were the result of an auto-immune disease, which satisfied her queries at the time. “I started getting back pain after that and I thought, ‘Oh, I just can’t catch a break!’ and then I noticed a lump had formed right in the front of my chest. My doctor and I both initially thought it was just the same type as on my legs, but then it started getting bigger and bigger,” she says. Penny’s doctor ordered an immediate ultrasound and biopsy, but it was right before school holidays, so after doing the tests, Penny escaped to a remote town for a holiday with her sister. Just as the pair were able to jump in the pool, Penny’s phone lit up with ‘No Caller ID’. “All my family know I never answer no caller IDs, but something possessed me to answer it and it was my doctor, who was also on holiday, and she just said, ‘you need to go see a specialist … like tomorrow’,” Penny says. A supposed three-day wait for Penny’s results turned into two weeks, and then she finally received the call to say she was diagnosed with Mediastinal large B cell nonHodgkin lymphoma in April of 2021. “In a weird way, the diagnosis was a relief because I just wanted to know what was going on … but I was so shocked it was hard to comprehend what that even really meant,” says Penny, her voice softening as she recalls the traumatic memory. The next four and a half months of treatment 14

was a whirlwind for Penny, who was connected to a pump, somewhat affectionately christened ‘Pumpy’, for 96 hours straight every three weeks. A Year 3 teacher, her stoic plan was to continue working throughout her “extremely strong” chemotherapy treatment, but Penny had underestimated just how taxing the experience was going to be. She would consider herself a positive person, but she admits there were times during her treatment where she struggled to look on the bright side.

“My advice to anyone going through cancer treatment right now is that you’re stronger than you think you are and find what makes you happy … find those small little things in amongst the horrible stuff,” Penny smiles. Holding on for better days was a lifeline during her treatment, and one of those better days she dreamed off was being able to do the survivor lap at this years’ Relay for Life. Throughout her teen years, Penny had participated in seven relays and had always been walking for other people, but this year, it’s all for herself.

“It felt special that I had been a part of something before I really needed it. To be a part of Relay for Life again while being on the other side of my treatment is really significant for me. To be able to say I’ve beaten cancer and I survived … it’s just really special,” she smiles. “You never think it’s going to happen to you until it does happen to you. The money that they raise really helps the research so that people can have a better quality of life during treatment.

“I think sometimes people just think they’re sending $20 into the abyss, but it helps real people.” A self-confessed pink donut fanatic, Penny has named her team ‘Donut Stop’, and she wears her pink donut earrings gifted by a friend with immense pride. “I love a good pun, so we decided on ‘Donut Stop’ meaning ‘do not stop’. It refers to not stopping in the Relay, but also not stopping until we find a cure,”she says. “There’s just too many people impacted by cancer, and Relay for Life is one of those organisations that everyone can get behind because we all know someone.” You can read Penny’s full story at canberraweekly.com.au, and sign up or donate to Relay for Life at www.relayforlife.org.au - Abbey Halter

news

To the editor ACT Government’s grab for money The Real Estate pages of the 24 February 2022 Canberra Weekly reveal that the median price of properties sold that week was $900,000. The ACT government makes a fortune from its stamp duty tax on the sale of properties so must delight in the high prices being paid by families desperate to own their own home. Further, some 12,300 registrations were received for just 71 blocks of land, which will not even be available for at least a year. Further land sales will not occur until the middle of this year. The ACT Labor/Greens government makes a fortune from ‘selling’ land to developers (how is this even possible when all ACT land is leasehold?), who also take a huge profit from the same piece of land. By my rough calculations, over the past 45 years the cost of land has risen from about half of the average wage to about eight times the average wage. No wonder we have a housing affordability crisis here. Meanwhile schools are underresourced and over-crowded, hospitals are underfunded, and ‘Community Transport’ services cut back (‘Changes worsen isolation’ letter to the editor, CW 24 Feb). Yet we continue to pursue an ideologically driven extension to the light rail project and all the disruption that entails instead of other more affordable options. Our debt per capita is already the highest of all the state/territory governments. What will it actually take to make voters open their eyes and really look at just what

this current government is costing us and future generations? - Disgruntled Greenie (name and address supplied)

Morrison can’t change nature Alicia Payne (CW 24 Feb p10) states that our environment and climate have suffered under the Morrison Government. Now I know Morrison is a religious man, but even someone like him surely can’t change mother nature. Would Ms Payne like to thank the government for the bucket loads of rain that has fallen recently, this must be good for long suffering farmers and our green gardens. When will politicians like Ms Payne realise that you can’t change the climate because it is a cyclic natural occurring event that has been happening for millions of years. Has she looked into countries overseas that just rely on renewable energy for their electricity? When the need for heat or cooling goes up, these countries suffer blackouts because the grid can’t keep up and they have to plug into other countries that use coal, gas or nuclear because it is instant, reliable and not dependent on the weather. Germany will be regretting their decision to cease coal and nuclear power plants, as they now rely on 60-70 per cent of their electricity to come from Russia’s gas pipeline that Putin will undoubtably cut in the coming weeks. Maybe they (and we) should take a leaf out of England’s book and build a nuclear power plant capable of powering most of the country. - I. Pilsner, Weston

A failure to prepare a valid and up to date Will may lead to unintended consequences in respect to your estate upon your death. The Public Trustee and Guardian has qualified, and professional lawyers engaged to prepare your Will and Enduring Power of Attorney. We can only do so where the Public Trustee and Guardian is appointed as Executor or Attorney OR your partner/spouse

‘Did I mention I’m a vegan?’ brownies 3 Tbsp ground flaxseed 80g coconut oil, plus extra for greasing 200g vegan dark chocolate (around 70% cocoa solids), roughly broken into pieces The Brownie Diaries by Leah Hyslop, Bloomsbury, $29.99.

canberraweekly.com.au

230g light muscovado sugar 2 tsp vanilla paste or extract 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee granules, dissolved in 1 Tbsp boiling water 130ml almond or other plant milk 160g plain flour 40g cocoa powder 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 80g vegan dark, milk, or white chocolate, chopped into small chunks

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 20cm square tin with a little butter and line with baking parchment.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 20cm square tin with a little oil and line with baking parchment.

Put the butter and chocolate in a medium saucepan and place over a low heat. Cook, stirring, until smooth and melted. Take off the heat, add the sugars and stir until smooth. Set aside and let cool for at least 5 minutes.

Put the flaxseed in a mug or bowl, add 7 Tbsp of cold water, and give it a good stir. Leave to one side.

Meanwhile, put the popcorn into a plastic bag, and bash roughly with the end of a rolling pin, so you have some bigger and some smaller chunks. Add the eggs to the chocolate mix and stir until glossy and combined. Sift over the flour, cocoa powder, and salt, add the chilli flakes, and gently fold together. Fold in the stem ginger and syrup and most of the popcorn. Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin. Scatter the remaining popcorn on top, pressing them into the batter slightly. Bake for 45–50 minutes (cover with foil after 20 minutes if it looks like the popcorn is catching), until set on top and there’s no movement; a skewer inserted will still come out rather wet. Leave the brownies to cool before slicing. Scatter over the red chilli before serving. Offer to your date with ice cream and a smile. Hot Tip: Ancho chilli bring a gentle, fruity heat, but you can use normal chilli (just use half as much).

Put the coconut oil and chocolate in a medium saucepan set over a low heat, stirring regularly, until melted. Leave to cool for 5 minutes or so, until just warm to the touch. Stir in the sugar. Add the vanilla, coffee, flaxseed mixture and almond milk and stir until smooth. Sift over the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt, and gently fold together. Stir through the chocolate chunks. Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin and spread to the edges. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until set on top, with a few cracks appearing around the edges. Don’t worry if there’s still movement when you shake the tin; you want to avoid overbaking these, as this makes them dry and crumbly. Let the brownie cool completely before cutting into squares. These are good with ice cream (vegan, obviously). Hot Tip: The secret ingredient to a decent vegan brownie is flaxseed. When combined with water, they create a thick paste which helps hold the brownie together, a little like eggs do.

CW Taste editor Anja de Rozario has found the ultimate foodie experience in Canberra, and it’s a gem hidden in Braddon’s coolest

apartment building. The new fine dining establishment, fittingly named Alcove, can’t be seen from street view. Follow the corridor next to the parking lot of the bubble-windowed redbrick, 16 Lonsdale Street. Alcove is a pairing menu establishment. Restaurateurs and two halves of a creative mind, Chef Kenny and Mixologist Ricky, work side by side to create a menu of perfect pairs, inspired by world destinations.“The meal starts in Tokyo and moves South,” explains Ricky. Rounding out the team, Will, the third owner, designed Alcove to have fewer tables and an open concept to better accommodate for fine dining and the height of

customer service. Some pairings on the menu are inspired by Ricky and Kenny’s childhood, like the Chrysanthemum and Wonton pairing that calls back to their younger years, getting inspired by the street food of Hong Kong, a bottle of chrysanthemum tea in hand. They lead your taste buds through North and South Japan, Hong Kong, Bangkok, a brief detour to Pairs, before finishing off the meal in Singapore. “It is a very unique experience that you can’t get anywhere else in Canberra,” says Ricky. “We think of it as high calibre cocktail food.” “We hope we really bring something fresh to the city and represent Canberra in a way that stands apart from other cities.” Visit @alcove.act on Instagram to secure your seat. Local artist and Wiradjuri man, Eddie Longford, will be painting murals in his contemporary Indigenous style on several walls across Civic and the Parliamentary Triangle.

Festival scratching the Surface of Canberra’s urban art Over the first weekend of March, the walls, laneways, and buildings of Braddon and Civic will come to life thanks to Surface Festival, Canberra’s first ever celebration of street art. Running 4 to 6 March, the festival includes over 26 events spanning live mural paintings to workshops and walking tours. Program highlights include a Boogie Down Under block party, the Woden drains time warp outdoor exhibition, and a ‘scoot and screen’ tour involving light projections, music, and e-scooters. Canberra artist Bohie, who specialises in hand-drawn typography, murals and street art, is among the 35 local and interstate artists participating in the festival. The Braidwood-based artist told Canberra Weekly that Surface will shed light on Canberra’s urban art in a way that’s never happened before. “Canberra’s got a really amazing individuality to it that is frankly not seen, certainly not on a national scale, because politics has such a loud voice here,” she said. “Although street art isn’t necessarily going hand in hand with the fine art world of Canberra just yet, it’s really interesting watching the gap close between the two and starting to see the street artists be recognised as fine artists in their own right, which this festival is helping.” Bohie has had a busy lead up to the festival: alongside painting her own mural in Braddon, she will also run a youth workshop using only recycled materials, and speak on a panel about gender equality in street art.

Having moved back to the region three years ago, Bohie is passionate about highlighting both environmental and gender issues in her work; she also dedicates much of her time to teaching and mentoring emerging female street artists: “which is a lot about giving them a voice and letting them paint whatever they want”. Giving back to the local community now in the form of both public murals and mentoring, Bohie said growing up surrounded by Canberra’s “incredible youth culture” influenced her heavily. “I really found my home in Canberra when I started getting involved in skatepark culture, punk music, and all this stuff that was very much happening underneath the surface,” she said. “That led to ongoing travel and living in other cities to be able to come back and bring it all together here.”

Wiradjuri artist ‘tells local stories’ through art For local artist and Wiradjuri man, Eddie Longford, Surface offers him an “excellent opportunity” to display his style of art and culture. For this festival, Longford has been assigned a substantial amount of real estate: he has been creating works on an overpass and on the side of a building in Rabaul Lane, Civic, along with a couple of tunnels in the Parliamentary Triangle. “I’ve never painted in anything like this,” he said. Longford’s primary medium is working on canvas in a contemporary Indigenous style that combines traditional and non-traditional techniques and colours.

He retains a similar style to his canvas pieces when working on murals but must alter his methods to accommodate the differences. “I try to take what I do on canvas and put it into a mural in a simplified form,” he said. Alongside just the sheer disparity in scale, murals also require the use of different tools and paints. “It’s similar, but a lot of it’s different,” he said. “It’s a scaled-down version of what you would do on a canvas. “It’s a much bigger, more commercial kind of process.” As a Wiradjuri man born and raised in Canberra, Longford makes sure to always acknowledge the local Ngunnawal people in work around town. “Anything I do throughout Canberra, I always tell stories about the local area and pay tribute to the Ngunnawal people,” he said. Prior to starting his business and painting full-time five years ago, Longford had always been creating, be it painting or woodburning. He would also work in community roles, either with vulnerable people or in justice, teaching painting classes to inmates. He has been painting on canvas full time for five years and doing murals for the past four. As well as painting a host of murals on schools across Canberra’s south, he often works as a consultant in education, running sessions for both students and teachers on art, its meaning, and how it can be used to teach children. National Museum gifted iconic $1.2 million Indigenous artwork

Margo Ngawa Neale, head of the National Museum of Australia’s Indigenous Knowledges Curatorial Centre, said newly donated work, Jabanunga aka Goorialla (The Rainbow Serpent), is “epic in scale and meaning”.

The National Museum of Australia last week unveiled the latest feather in their cap, a major $1.2-million artwork, Jabanunga aka Goorialla (The Rainbow Serpent), painted by late Kimberley artist, Rover Thomas. Created in 1996 at the fledgling Warmun community art centre in Western Australia’s east Kimberley region, the monumental artwork by Thomas is considered one of the artist’s most significant pieces. The grand 2.7x1.8m artwork depicts the Rainbow Serpent penetrating the Earth, following a subterranean journey to the sea in the wake of Cyclone Tracy’s destruction of Darwin in 1974.

“It’s as epic in scale as it is in meaning,” said Margo Ngawa Neale, head of the Museum’s Indigenous Knowledges Curatorial Centre. Painted at the peak of Thomas’ powers, Neale explained that the Rainbow Serpent is a hugely powerful being, producing amazing feats of both creation and destruction. Jabanunga aka Goorialla (The Rainbow Serpent) speaks to the shared history between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. “At this point, it was so incensed at all the colonisation, the destruction of land through cattle, the pastoralism, through the mining,

Indigenous art ‘needs to tell the story’ The artwork was gifted to the Museum by Michael Blanche in honour of his late wife Lauraine Diggins OAM, who passed away in 2019. Having spent more than 30 years working with Indigenous art across the gallery and museum space, Neale was instrumental in acquiring the piece. Well-connected and trusted in the sector, she has led a push for artworks like this to be donated to museums. Historically, she said, artworks like Jabanunga aka Goorialla (The

Rainbow Serpent) would have been donated to galleries, where their aesthetics are emphasised over other elements. “To honour the original intention of Aboriginal artists, you need to tell the story, and these stories are our history, they are our culture made visible,” Neale said. “Over time, I’ve let people see that if you do it at a museum, not only are they more likely to be seen, because we don’t have huge collections,” she said, “and secondly, if they’re here, they’ll have their stories told. “Art galleries can just emphasise the aesthetics … you can do both here.” Neale said presenting the story alongside the work only serves to enhance the aesthetic, rather than detract from it. The work will be presented alongside seven other pieces from the National Historical Collection as part of a Masters’ Insight display in

and deculturalisation of people, and as a result, in its wrath it brought on Cyclone Tracy,” Neale said. “This painting is sort of a portend statement about what we today see as contemporary critical issues facing all of us, but this mob were onto it a long time ago,” she said.

Humble House Gallery feature

Spellbinding landscapes Sydney artist Chrissie Lloyd’s new exhibition, Flinders Ranges to Birdsville, depicts some of Australia’s most mesmerising rural landscapes in an expressive contemporary realist style. Opening this weekend at Fyshwick’s Humble House Gallery, Lloyd has long been fascinated by and drawn to the Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre, and the Channel Country of south-west Queensland. “I’m just in awe of some of these places I’ve been to and seen from the air and the ground,” she said. On her travels, Lloyd was inspired to paint an array of scenery: from expansive red dunes, imposing mountains and dramatically coloured flooded waterways through to roadside fridges and gnarled fenceposts. “Like many artists, it’s just something that seeps into you, and

if you’re passionate about painting you can feel the essence of the place creep into you, and you want to capture it,” she said. More than half of the exhibition’s 32 paintings portray the Flinders Ranges, capturing the region’s mountains, flora such as gigantic red river gums sitting in dry creek beds, and emus. While on location, Lloyd was also inspired to paint a padlocked roadside refrigerator that served as a street library. “To see this refrigerator standing out in the middle of nowhere, to me that is so quirky, that is so Australian, but it’s providing a purpose for the people who live in the area,” she said. Local boardgame publishers create their own title

Canberrans Liam Wilson (pictured) and Ryan Venner of Yarn Mail Games are on their way to releasing their first boardgame, a real-time biplane skirmish titled Dogfight. Photos: Denholm Samaras.

First-time Canberra boardgame publishers, Liam Wilson and Ryan Venner of Yarn Mail Games, are this close to turning their dream into a reality with a real-time biplane boardgame titled Dogfight. Liam conceived the initial kernel of an idea for Dogfight, inspired by his favourite boardgame genre, real-time, where cards are played down instantaneously before being resolved. “It introduces a bunch of chaos,” he told Canberra Weekly. Both avid players of boardgames since childhood, the duo began working together when Ryan approached Liam with an idea of his own. “It was a case of well, we’ve played a lot of boardgames, we understand the mechanics of them, and figure we can make one that’s good and fun to play.” Dogfight had its genesis in the duo getting stuck in a rut while developing that initial boardgame three years ago. “We got to a fairly late prototype stage, we had all the rules down and it was a matter of designing the pieces and we just couldn’t quite get it to work,” he said.

With a couple of other “half-baked” projects to choose from, Dogfight’s fewer pieces, simpler rules and collaborative nature made it the standout project worth pursuing further. “We landed on Dogfight as the one we wanted to push through to completion, because in terms of scale, it’s smaller than the other two,” Liam said. “It’s also very much a game of communication.” The boardgame has been two years in the making, with the first six months dedicated to sorting out “95 per cent” of the game’s design. The other 18 months of development were spent chiefly getting the artwork ready; in-house artist Ryan completed artwork for 120 cards, with 40 to 60 unique pieces of art. They also secured manufacturing and shipping. Their Kickstarter was then launched on Thursday 17 February, looking to raise at least $14,000 by 19 March, which would cover costs on the minimum order size from their manufacturer. As of 1 March, the project has received just under $10,000 worth funding with 17 days remaining. Dogfight is a two-on-two biplane board

game played in real time, each team comprises a gunner, and a pilot, who each hold a different set of cards. The pilot moves the plane around while the gunner tries to shoot down their opponent. It’s been designed to play as a fast, tactical game that is accessible and still contains a deep level of strategy and skill for keen players to dive into. A game sees teams play through a series of 20-second rounds. During the allotted time they strategise before playing four cards down, after which the cards are revealed one by one, resolving what’s happened. This is where the game’s key component, communication, comes to the fore. “You have to make and execute a plan in that time,” Wilson said. “And the enemy team is doing the exact same thing at the exact same time. “I can’t show you my cards, I have to tell you what I want you to do, and they can hear that, and you can hear what they’re planning.” Visit kickstarter.com/projects/yarnmailgames/ dogfight to pledge money to the project. - Denholm Samaras

An avid boardgame player since childhood, Liam said they decided to pursue Dogfight due to its simplicity and being built around a core theme of communication between players.

The Beanies make their ABC Kids debut Tuesday 1 March was one of The Beanies’ biggest days ever in the six years they’ve been together. The children’s music group have performed countless live shows, released a handful of albums, and produced an award-winning podcast that’s had over one million

listens. Then, earlier this week they added TV to their resume when eight animated song and dance video clips began airing on ABC Kids. The Beanies’ Mim Rizvi, Laura Dawson and ‘music wizard’ James Court all hail from Canberra, while fourth member, Michael Yore, is

from Newcastle. The eight clips feature some of the group’s most popular songs and is a bit different to typical ABC Kids content: “It’s for kids who are a bit silly,” Mim said. Laura said the opportunity came about “mainly through sheer determination”. “It has been a goal of the group since our inception, so we just kept knocking on doors until we found the right one. We have had the support of ABC Music since 2020 who helped us get a foot in the door,” she said. The series had been in the works for around a year before airing. All set to record mid-2021, Sydney’s lockdown created an air of uncertainty around how they would proceed, with the team even considering relocating to Canberra to record the series.

“Then just after we confirmed all of our quarantine arrangements, the ACT went into lockdown,” Mim said. Ultimately, the songs were recorded over three days in Sydney in the middle of the lockdown, which provided respite for the whole team and a chance to catch up in person.

‘Covid led to us getting on TV’ Prior to Covid, live performing had always been both The Beanies primary creative outlet and source of revenue. Minimal gig opportunities over the past two years have taken a large financial toll on the group, but they’ve also had their share of silver linings. “To look at it positively, Covid was what led to us getting on TV,” Mim said.

Long before 2020, The Beanies had already developed several digital offerings, like their awardwinning podcast series and YouTube clips. But even that level of digital experience couldn’t prepare them for live online kids shows, of which they’re seasoned veterans now. In mid-2020, they even travelled to Canberra to perform on the Canberra Theatre stage for an empty house as part of the venue’s Facebook live series. “It’s just so quiet,” Mim smiled. “You’ll ask them what their favourite colour is and then have to reply as if you’ve heard them all call out to you.” They were able to hone their improv skills doing gigs where fans could message in requests. “We got some crazy ones!” Laura said. “In one show we got asked to

do a cartwheel, and none of us know how to do a cartwheel,” Mim smiled, “so Michael came up with something on the spot where he did a summersault and kicked his legs up off screen.” Now with some more certainty around domestic travel, The Beanies are looking to hit the road over 2022-23, with at least 20 gigs booked in already, including a Canberra show being finalised for August. While The Beanies were established in Sydney in 2016, Mim, Laura, and James all knew each other through growing up in Canberra’s local theatre scene. With such strong local ties, The Beanies love performing before home crowds, regularly playing the Canberra Theatre, The Q, and Floriade every year.

LADIES’ NIGHT SCREENING : RISE

Belfast (M) offers insights into Kenneth Branagh’s childhood in Northern Ireland in the 1960s.

Now showing Belfast (M) Back in 1969 in Belfast, a working-class Ulster Protestant family go about their lives on their peaceful street; nine-yearold buddy (Jude Hill), his ma (Caitriona Balfe) and pa (Jamie Dornan), and his grandparents (Judie Dench and Ciaran Hinds). Soon, a group of Protestant loyalists attack the homes and businesses of Catholics on the street. After the cold reception of Death on the Nile, writer and director Kenneth Branagh has impressed the Academy Awards with this new entry. Based on Branagh’s early life, Belfast is unapologetically nostalgic for the times of old, which unfortunately still reflect times of today, through the Belfast ‘Troubles’ of the late 1960s. Shot in beautiful black-andwhite, the movie only comes into colour to a startling effect when young Buddy watches movies

at his local cinema. This love of cinema makes it easy to see how he will eventually develop into a filmmaker later in life. His love of his family, his street, and the young Catholic girl at his school displays his emotional ties to his home and goes some way to explain his heartbreak at any mention of leaving it. It is difficult, however, to empathise with Buddy when his family is facing so many struggles and the threat of violence (or worse), when the opportunity to leave for either Australia or Canada is so within reach. Verdict: While a visually beautiful, wistful look to a simpler past, the movie is no more than a kaleidoscopic look at Branagh’s childhood in Belfast. 2.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk Jeff Popple reviews three thrilling tales for March. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Those Who Perish by Emma Viskic Echo, $29.99

Emma Viskic is one of Australia’s premier crime writers and her latest novel, Those Who Perish, is another taut and gripping tale that packs an emotional punch. Deaf PI Caleb Zelic rushes to the help of his wayward brother, Anton, one dark morning, only to find himself being shot at by a sniper. Caleb’s subsequent investigation leads him to a small, windpunished island off the Victorian coast, where Anton is in rehab and the locals are being picked off by a deadly killer. This is a gripping read with finely nuanced characters who you care about and a plot that sizzles with suspense.

Breathless by Amy McCulloch Michael Joseph, $32.99

Books about small groups of people trapped in a remote location and being stalked by a killer are very much in vogue at the moment, but Amy McCulloch takes it to another level with her debut thriller, Breathless. Struggling journalist Cecily Wong joins an expedition intent on scaling one of the Himalayas’ toughest peaks, but she soon realises that a killer has also come along for the climb. McCulloch is a very experienced climber and Breathless is full of vivid descriptions of the Himalayas, fascinating insights into mountaineering and plenty of suspense and action. A very exciting read.

6 formulas for the perfect work wardrobe Vogue Australia has catalogued New York Fashion Week 2022 and given us six business casual formulas for outfits, straight off the runaway. Here’s how our favourite celebrities did the maths. WITH BEAUTY AND FASHION EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

Suit yourself: Whether you like an oversized fit like Euphoria it-girl Alexa Demie or lean towards a clean-cut power suit like Sex in the City era Kim Cattrall, a good suit is an excellent addition to any capsule work wardrobe. You can break it up and use the dress pants to make a small top more work appropriate, and we all know how versatile a suit jacket can be.

1

2

Just belt it: In the realm of business wear, this is risky business. However, if you’re in a pinch, a thick belt can completely transform an oversized garment. Spiderman actress Zendaya has the right idea, pairing with black tights for a bit more modesty. Can we take a second to admire her blowout as she flees the hotel with BF Tom Holland?

3

5

4

6

Proportional play: This one is easy. A nice pair of jeans + a clean white tee + an oversized blazer, and voila! You are officially the coolest girl around the water cooler. Kendall Jenner is a big fan of the model-off-duty look that at least suggests “no effort”. We love the subtle patchworking on her blazer. Sweater weather: Just in time for autumn, drapey sweaters are unfolding in store windows near us. Make it ‘work’ by layering your comfy sweater over an utterly chic midi skirt. Pick a tule skirt for a Carrie Bradshaw vibe, or a satin midi skirt for something more Seoul inspired. Or as demonstrated by the elegant Giovanna Battaglia, a bold artistic print.

Keep it tonal: Now, with this one you really can’t go wrong. It never ceases to amaze me how polished an outfit can become when you stick to one colour family. Look how stunningly gorgeous Dove Cameron is in head-to-toe chocolate brown. The slightly brown-tinted glasses are just the icing on the cake. Sports leisure: “Biz-leisure” is nothing new, particularly for the nine-to-fivers who are found at the gym at any other time. This year however, it’s intentional and not just a convenience. Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner demonstrates this perfectly, with a sharp coat and cat-eyed shades taking this look from sweat to streetwear.

The Vein Institute advertising moment

The Vein Institute team, led by Dr Zil Yassine (pictured), specialise in surgery-free treatment for varicose veins.

How to treat your varicose veins without surgery The Vein Institute are specialists in the safe and effective treatment of varicose veins, with no surgery and minimal downtime. Led by director Dr Zil Yassine, alongside his dedicated and expert team, the Vein Institute uses the latest technology from Europe and the USA to treat the veins in their Canberra clinic – walk in and walk out with the legs of your dreams!

Varicose veins can cause symptoms such as pain and heaviness in the legs and chronic swelling in the lower legs and ankles.

What are varicose veins? Did you know that one in three Australians suffer from a vein disorder such as varicose veins? Varicose veins can occur when your vein valves are not functioning properly. Faulty or weak one-way valves will allow blood to flow backwards and collect in your vein, which will eventually lead to the swollen, twisted looking veins.

Dr Yassine says veins are an integral part of the circulation system, taking de-oxygenated blood back to the heart. This is why vein conditions should always be taken seriously. “Issues with your veins are likely linked to poor blood circulation and could therefore lead to health concerns related to your heart and lungs.”

What are the signs and symptoms? While some people experience little or no symptoms at all, others can experience some or all of the following, says Dr Yassine. “In general, vein pain is considered vague and dull rather than sharp or immediate. If you raise your legs and the pain goes away, this is an indication your pain is vein related.” Signs and symptoms can include: • Pain, itching or heaviness in the legs • Burning, throbbing or muscle cramping

• Pain that intensifies after long periods sitting or standing • Chronic swelling in the lower legs or ankles “Each individual is different; however, there are some cases where, over time, circulation may become worse and cause changes in the colour and texture of the legs. “For some patients, if varicose veins are left untreated for too long, they can cause swelling in the legs and pigmentation of the skin. In rare cases, they can even cause ulcers.”

What are the treatment options? It’s important to treat varicose veins in a timely manner to minimise the risk of developing other health issues, says Dr Yassine. Surgical “stripping” of the veins often requires a hospital stay and a lengthy recovery period. Fortunately, varicose veins can be treated without surgery using laser technology, a treatment option which is growing in popularity. The Vein Institute’s dedicated team of vein specialists use laser treatments as well as injections and the newest medical superglue treatments to treat varicose veins, with all treatment plans tailored to the individual patient’s circumstances and needs. All treatments at the Vein

Institute begin with an initial consultation, where one of the doctors will perform an ultrasound to determine the cause of the varicose veins. Once this has been done, they will discuss your treatment options and determine the best course of action. After the treatment, the doctors will assess your case and may recommend further treatment or simply a followup appointment to monitor progress and recovery. Dr Yassine says the sensation of the laser treatments can be likened to that of a blood test or an injection, with many patients opting to read a book or magazine during the procedure – you can even request to hear your favourite songs!

The Vein Institute uses the latest technological treatments for varicose veins, which have minimal pain and discomfort associated with them.

Why choose non-surgical treatment? Dr Yassine says non-surgical treatments have minimal pain and discomfort associated with them and require very little recovery and downtime post-procedure. “The new laser procedures are as effective as surgical intervention and generally considered to be safer.” Appointments are walk-in, walk-out, and take less than 45 minutes per treatment. ‘‘Our patients describe visits to the Vein Institute as being like quick visits to their local doctor and are quite thankful that they don’t need any time off work,” says Dr Yassine. Compression stockings are

only required for a few days after non-surgical treatment, compared with weeks and even months post-surgery. Now that we’re heading into the cooler months, it is a good time to start thinking about treatment for your varicose veins at the Vein Institute, so you can step out with your new legs in time for the warmer weather later in the year! All treatments at the Vein Institute are performed in a private medical clinic, with COVID-19 protocols and procedures in place. Medicare rebates apply and Medipay payment plans are available.

“We had a baby!” Last time we spoke to Canberra YouTubers Chelsea and Natalia Brunton, their fanbase was babbling on the arrival of their fi rst born. “We had kept the sex a complete surprise, to both us and the world.” Baby Sage was born July 2021. Her arrival naturally slotted into the vlogs capturing the journey of Chelsea and Natalia’s modern family, now expanded by one. “It’s hard trying not to make every vlog about her because we want to capture every single moment,” smiled Natalia when sitting down with CW once more. “I don’t think our subscribers mind too much. It’s defi nitely a novelty to have a baby on the channel after so many years of it just being us.” The couple’s channel cracked 25K subscribers and over three million views since Sage’s birth. “Sage was the only name that we knew for years and years that we wanted for our child, whether it was a boy or a girl,” said Natalia. “We decided on it because it’s gender-neutral. If she grows up and decides to be somebody else, we wanted to make sure her name didn’t feel like something holding her back.” Back when Natalia was shopping for baby clothes leading up to the birth, she struggled to find gender-neutral clothing that wasn’t brown or grey. “It was so exclusively marketed to boys or girls. I got frustrated that I couldn’t find what I was looking for - baby clothes that had colour and were made for kids to play in without anything else attached. I thought, ‘That’s it. I’m going to do this myself.’” Natalia’s new line of gender inclusive baby clothes and toys, PASTL, launched on 1 March. Though she’s kept her endeavours off YouTube, the response on other

social media platforms has been “incredible”. “I’ve heard time and time again that there’s been such a gap in baby products and ‘why hasn’t this been done before?’” In a few words, she described PASTL as colourful, playful, and open. “Open to whoever, whatever, there’s no barriers on which child can wear it and what they can do.” “At the moment, we’re sizes triple zero to four. While the focus for the initial drop is babies and toddlers, in the future, as Sage grows, I would like the brand to grow, too. This is just a hint of what’s already in the pipeline.” She explained that PASTL’s business ethos, ‘colours are for everyone’, reflects what she knows to her core: “you are going to be your own person regardless of whether you get dressed in pink or blue”. Thus far, PASTL is everything Canberrans love about a small sustainable business: compostable packaging, no excess plastic, and fair wage manufacturers. Natalia decided to take it a step further and combine genderneutral clothes with Montessoriinspired toys. “Montessori basically means open-ended play. Things that kids can play with or use at any age. “We have a vegan silk scarf that we’ve been using with Sage to play peekaboo. But as she gets older, it can become a cape, a roof to a cubby, anything really. “The idea is not to restrict them in how they learn, how they play, how they can imagine … a lot of kids get stuck with clicking a button that starts flashing lights and they just kind of sit there, then press the button again. “This idea is to keep kids moving, to opt for imagination rather than distraction.” Particularly with her toy line, Natalia was inspired by motherhood

and “how we’re bringing up Sage”. “To each their own, I can’t stress that enough, but I want her to be able to discover the world with her own hands, not through a screen. “We’re bringing it back to the basics, letting kids be kids and colours be colours!” Her advice to other new parents wanting to raise their child in a

gender-neutral environment but faced with a lack of options, also comes down to the basics. “At the end of the day, the biggest difference is made in how openminded you are towards who they could potentially be. What they wear is never going to be as important as your response to who they are.” - Anja de Rozario

Australia’s housing market faces major supply crunch A major supply crunch is on the horizon for Australia’s housing market, with the latest National Housing and Finance Investment Corporation (NHFIC) report predicting dire dwelling shortages. The NHFIC second State of the Nation Housing report highlights the urgent need for housing across the country and describes a healthy market in the short term soon to be a shattered by demand. According to Property Council of Australia chief executive Ken Morrison, as net overseas migration and the economy recovers, new housing demand will outstrip supply. “The projections in this report are concerning and mirror the same warning the Property Council of Australia has been making for some time,” Mr Morrison said. “The report clearly shows that between 2025 and 2032, Australia will find itself 163,000 homes short of expected demand. That’s an average deficit of 20,000 homes a year, every year, until 2032.” He said that housing supply is expected to fall overall by around one third in four years from 2023. “At a time when housing affordability is front of mind for many Australians, the last thing we can afford is having supply and planning constraints putting further upward pressures on rents and

prices,” Mr Morrison said. “The fresh NHFIC data also correlates with Property Council/Urbis data, which showed apartment supply in 2020 to 2024 is likely to be around just one fifth of levels we saw in 2014 to 2018.” He urged governments of all levels to take immediate steps to address the major concerns the report has flagged. The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) said the NHFIC report confirms the need for national plans for renters, first home buyers, and owner occupiers in Australia. REIA president Hayden Groves said the report reiterates the Institute’s stance that the government needs to address supply, which is the main way to solve the affordability crisis. “Affordability for renters and first home buyers deteriorated across most cities and regions in 2021 to September, except in Sydney and Melbourne, where aggregate rental affordability modestly improved,” Mr Groves said. “However, rental pressures have been building in these cities more recently and this situation is set to worsen in the short term. Rents are likely to continue to rise in the near term as international

Investor loans hit record high

Cladding remediation continues

Investors are backing the housing market with loans to investors rising by 6.1 per cent in January, according to the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA). The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that new investor housing loan commitments hit a record high of $11.0 billion (seasonally adjusted) in January 2022, which is a significant increase of 6.1 per cent. REIA president Hayden Groves said housing affordability, in the face of rising inflation, continues to be a concern with the average loan rising $17,000 to a record high of $619,000. Mr Groves said the rise in investor loan commitments was concentrated in NSW (up 9.8 per cent) and Victoria (up 11.1 per cent). “The share of investor lending to all new housing loan commitments was around one third of the total, in line with longer-term averages.” 54

Fourteen ACT Government buildings are now free of combustible cladding, and work continues on the remaining nine government buildings found to have the potentially dangerous material. The latest buildings to have completed remediation works are Canberra High School, Howard Florey House, Civic Youth Centre, and the ACT Magistrates Court. Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction, Rebecca Vassarotti, said the government’s work on removing potentially combustible cladding is important for the safety of Canberrans. “While our work on ACT Government buildings is ongoing, we continue to support eligible owners corporations to replace potentially combustible cladding with our first phase of the Private Buildings Cladding Scheme, which was launched in July 2021,” Ms Vassarotti said. “The ACT Government has assisted eligible owners corporations by paying 50 per cent of the costs of testing and assessing their buildings’

border restrictions are relaxed.” He said the NHFIC report was consistent with the REIA’s Housing Affordability Report which found that housing affordability deteriorated throughout 2021 due to strong price growth. “Average loan sizes have increased to $570,000 while the weighted average median house price for the eight capital cities increased to $961,059 over the year to September 2021,” Mr Groves said. “All of these factors point for the need for a long-term plan and resourcing from all levels of government.”

cladding (up to $20,000 excluding GST), with 16 buildings currently being assessed. “Phase two of the scheme, which will see remediation works undertaken on eligible buildings, will be facilitated by a concessional loan which will provide financial support for eligible building owners to undertake the removal of cladding from their buildings.” Owners corporations are encouraged to apply for the Private Buildings Cladding Scheme, and applications for phase one will remain open until 21 July 2022. Phase two is expected to launch later this year.

Investor’s dream Macquarie 3 Biraban Place For the first time in decades, this modern yet charming home is on the market and represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for a firsthome buyer to get their foot in the door with an exceptional block. Property agent, Peta Swarbrick, says this property is already on its way out the door, and has an abundance of potential for a permaculture garden, an orchard, and a quaint home perfectly positioned for collecting solar rays. “3 Biraban Place has a very sweet façade. I think it punches above its weight for street appeal given its long history as an investment property,” says Ms Swarbrick. “The location is perfect, nestled in a quiet

cul de sac just minutes from the Cook shops, Jamison Centre, major bus routes and arterial roads.” The intricate details scattered throughout, such as the arched doorways, vintage-style front door, and iron patio railings, imbue the home with charisma and character. “I think what makes the property a fantastic home is its potential. It sits on a slightly elevated, deep block with a long north boundary, and it’s ripe for an extension. Buyers have a wonderful opportunity to maximise the orientation for Canberra climate conditions,” says Ms Swarbrick. “3 Biraban has been described by several buyers as a property with ‘good bones’. It bears

witness to the personal style of its early owners and has then been maintained as an investment property for over 30 years. I think it has a very bright future ahead.”

The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. Tuggeranong Southpoint is only five minutes’ drive away for more substantial shopping.

Room to move Nobody wants to downsize to something poky or impractical. Marigal Gardens offers generous and practical floorplans that are designed for relaxed and comfortable living. And as a resident’s needs change, their home can change too. No matter what the budget, or lifestyle, there are plenty of options to suit. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. Making the most of every day, your way Marigal Gardens is a thriving community with wonderful facilities and a lifeaffirming vibe that residents love. There are organised activities for all tastes should you choose to pursue a long-held passion or try something new. For more unstructured pleasures, catch up for a coffee, indulge in a gym workout or enjoy a relaxing sundowner at the bar. For the young at heart there is Kambah Adventure Playground right next door.

Feeling safe and secure Safety and security are frequently top priorities for buyers when it comes to choosing their new home. With staff onsite 24/7, help or assistance is never far away. And should travel beckon, our team and neighbours make sure a home is well looked after, so residents can take off with confidence. While buyers focus on lots of different reasons when making their decision, most come to a similar conclusion when they have finally settled in. Gay, one of our residents sums it up neatly: “I wish I’d made the move sooner.” For more information, please visit marigalgardens.com.au

Film director and producer George Miller is truly inspired by his work, and his interest in futuristic themes knows no bounds, enabling his creativity to soar. The coming months will bring solid focus to his abilities as an innovator and leader in his field. Furthermore, his determination and true sense of purpose in seeing his projects through to completion will help cement his position as a world leader in his craft.

pisces feb 20 – mar 20

virgo aug 24 – SePT 23

sagittarius nov 23 – dec 21

Thursday’s Pisces new moon signals the chance to boost your appearance, profile, wellbeing and romantic life, especially if it’s your birthday. Some matters may seem larger than life. a personal, health or work situation may require a more balanced outlook, which will put things into perspective.

Thursday’s Pisces new moon will bring fresh developments for some Twins via a relationship and for others through a key interest. you’ll enjoy a get-together this weekend and romance could flourish. but you must avoid intense conversations, as they could quickly escalate. aim to boost health and put your priorities first.

your creativity will flourish as a key project takes your focus. a fun and dynamic approach to your favourite projects and people will boost your circumstances and a relationship will blossom as a result. a change in a personal agreement or arrangement is worth considering too as it promises success.

This is a good time to make financial and domestic changes, as there is potential for success in both areas. However, this depends largely on obtaining someone’s agreement. a trip or meeting will encourage you to take action, but if you’re unsure, it’s important you do adequate research.

aries mar 21 – aPr 20

cancer jun 22 – jul 22

libra SePT 24 – ocT 23

capricorn dec 22 – jan 20

This weekend, you’ll appreciate a reunion or a return to an old haunt. you’ll enjoy a revitalising development at work or in your personal life early in the week. Take the initiative with your projects but avoid crossing lines and misunderstandings, especially on Sunday and monday.

This is an intense week, so if things are going well, you’ll enjoy it, but if not, take a moment to reflect before making snap decisions. a key emotional or financial investment will take much of your focus. romance could go off the dial, but if you’re unsure about making a commitment, avoid gambling with your emotions.

a change in your usual weekend routine could boost your health. domestic developments could be ideal; you’ll enjoy being hands-on with these to bring the best out in them. be prepared to enter fresh territory with your domestic arrangements. a visit will be enjoyable, but you must focus on the details.

conversations, negotiations and meetings this weekend will bring your inner philosopher and idealist out, so be sure to be practical and realistic to avoid mistakes. you may also be predisposed to be critical or to receive criticism. a situation that requires restraint may confuse matters, so take things one step at a time.

taurus aPr 21 – may 21

leo jul 23 – aug 23

aquarius jan 21 – feb 19

you’ll enjoy music, dance and a fun atmosphere this weekend, and romance could flourish. However, misunderstandings are possible with someone close or with someone you have come to rely on, such as an employer, during the week. you’ll gain an increased sense of purpose and direction, so be proactive.

This weekend, someone close will have important news and romance could blossom, so be sure to organise a treat. you’ll enjoy a social event, but you must avoid mix-ups. Working leos may enjoy a busy week, and a compliment will boost confidence. a change in your usual schedule will ring in a fresh chapter.

Thursday’s new moon will kickstart a fresh phase in your personal life. Singles should mingle, as you may meet a charismatic character. creative or spiritual Scorpios will feel inspired. a fresh work schedule or healthier phase will also appeal. an agreement with someone close will merit the use of tact and diplomacy.

Thursday’s new moon signals the chance to establish a solid budget and to improve finances. as mars and venus step into your sign this weekend, you’ll feel drawn to revitalise a key aspect of yourself, such as your appearance and health. a fresh interest or even a new relationship may begin now.

CANDLES I’m obsessed with candles and you’ll generally always find one burning in my home – inside or out! In the warmer months, a summery scent with citrus or floral notes always works well … and as things start to cool down, I’ll switch to a candle with a more earthy fragrance. This Jasmine and Lime Palm Beach candle is from Freedom.

FRESH FLOWERS One of the quickest and easiest ways to boost your spirits and freshen up a room is with fresh flowers. The clever ladies at Barton Flower Bar always create something special.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Photos Style Curator

From making my own low-tox cleaners to diffusing essential oils, these have become part of my daily life. I’ve got a huge collection but some of my favourites are the blends from Ena, a local and eco-friendly skincare and botanicals brand. One of the first things I’ll do in the morning is light up my oil burner as it sets a more tranquil tone that I hope will rub off on the kids … sometimes it’s successful, ha ha

My favourite things

Gina Ciancio

ART Art makes a house a home and even more special when it’s made just for you. This large Annie Everingham artwork is the first piece I ever had commissioned.

Interior designer and founder of Style Curator Gina Ciancio is an interior designer and founder of Style Curator, one of Australia’s leading interior websites. She founded Style Curator seven years ago to share her passion for design, DIY and home styling. Her authentic and down-to-earth approach resonated, and Style Curator now reaches over 1 million people each month through the website and social media accounts, making Gina one of the most influential digital personalities in the interiors niche. When she’s not creating content for Style Curator or working with design clients, you’ll find her running after her two young children or getting her hands messy in a creative project. Stay connected with all her latest projects at stylecurator.com.au or on any social platform at @stylecuratorau.

HANDWASH Perhaps it’s a sign of the times but I’ve never appreciated a good handwash more. I look for ones that are plant-based and naturally fragranced, like this Bondi Wash one which is worth the splurge. canberraweekly.com.au
