Technology making dental implants more affordable

thursday 10 march 2022

contents From the editor Wandering around the Enlighten precinct in the National Triangle last Friday evening, I felt a sense of excitement mixed with relief that our fair city could once again undertake such a large-scale public event. The illuminations were breathtaking and the big crowd’s delight palpable. And on Tuesday, I joined a group of avid supporters of the Mother’s Day Classic in Canberra for their annual breakfast launch on International Women’s Day. Raising funds for breast cancer research, the MDC fun run and walk marks its 25th anniversary this year (and its 15th in Canberra). After having to quickly “pivot” their 2020 event to online and operate a socially distanced version in 2021, they’re looking forward to returning to their large-scale inperson event at Rond Terrace in May. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a truly enchanting evening at the launch of the Secret Gin Garden at the Hoi Polloi Courtyard at Old Parliament House, socialising at opening night of the Alliance Française Film Festival, the truly extraordinary immersive experience of Van Gogh Alive in its special pop-up pavilion at Parkes, a delightfully mild evening marvelling at the brilliant Enlighten Illuminations (the National Gallery of Australia’s display is a must-see), and sharing breakfast with inspiring supporters of the MDC fundraiser for breast cancer research on International Women’s Day. Take care.

‘Crime wave’ sees Canberra businesses repeatedly burgled Fyshwick business Ion DNA has been targeted by burglars three times in 12 days as a “crime wave” hits shopfronts throughout Canberra. Since opening their electric vehicle showroom in 2018, Ion DNA owner and director, Rob Ogilvie, said they’d only had one prior break-in attempt. According to Mr Ogilvie, he is one of a handful of Fyshwick businesses that has been targeted of late, with e-bikes and e-scooters in particular a hot commodity. “Different stores have come in and told us what they had taken,” he said. “This is obviously a plague, there’s that much going on. “Everywhere I turned, everyone I spoke to, their place had been burgled. It was just horrendous.” Mr Ogilvie estimated the recent burglaries would cost him $10,000-$15,000, with insurance to partially cover losses. As a result, Ion DNA’s showroom security is being bolstered by upgrading their locks and glass, along with a new remote monitoring system. “If it takes us 15 to 20 minutes to get here, they’re gone, and we want someone here in

five,” he said. “We want someone here before they get in. “If it’s too hard here they’ll go somewhere else, which is what I want.” Owner of Canberra security business Leader Security, Troy Cassell, told Canberra Weekly the crime wave is due to police lacking the resources to attend and follow up on breakins, and local businesses not having adequate security measures in place to deter criminals. “Police aren’t their personal security providers, and they would get so many calls from people who have done nothing to protect themselves in the first place,” he said. “They’ve got limited resources and can’t be everywhere at once, and I think the problems are only going to get worse.” Mr Cassell said one popular bike shop in Phillip has been targeted four times in the past two months, with neighbouring bike stores in the precinct also getting hit. His business previously specialised in providing security solutions for construction sites that would be targeted for tools and

resources: “now every business is high risk”. “If you watch the videos, they take out an angle grinder and they’re inside within a minute,” he said. “They’re so brazen nowadays.” Earlier this month, ACT Policing issued a warning to potential buyers of e-bikes and e-scooters from online marketplaces to be aware the items could be among those stolen from local businesses in the recent spate of burglaries. - Denholm Samaras

Queanbeyan respite centre receives $250k shot in the arm Queanbeyan’s long-awaited respite care centre recently received $250,000 from leading health charity, the John James Foundation, for specialist medical equipment for chronically ill patients: hospital-grade beds, defibrillators, and oxygen. “The costs of medical fit-outs are not insignificant,” JJF CEO Joe Roff said. “The equipment will ensure the client gets the proper medical care, in comfort.” The JJF’s support was “a shot in the arm,” said Respite Care for QBN chair, Paul Walshe OAM. “Since we did the original cost plan, building costs have gone through the roof. To get $250,000 is magnificent.” The six-bedroom centre, opening next year, will offer short-term accommodation of up to two weeks for 18- to 59-year-olds with terminal or chronic illness, so their carers can take a break, go on holiday, or have a couple of days off for their own mental health, Mr Walshe said. The building will be named Yvonne Cuschieri House after the late founder of the 6

canberraweekly.com.au

Cancer Support Group (Rise Above). Ms Cuschieri determined to build a respite care centre after her son Steven was diagnosed with a brain tumour in his early 50s, and his parents searched for respite care in vain. The only option was for Steven to enter a nursing home, and share a room with two elderly men (one 92, one 88) with dementia. He died in that nursing home from a brain haemorrhage caused by a fall, Mr Walshe said. Queanbeyan woman Tascha Loadsman died last month from motor neurone disease, aged only 45. There was no respite care available for her; she had to take a room at Clare Holland House in Canberra. “It would be wonderful for me to have this facility here in Queanbeyan,” she told Mr Walshe. Their cases were not uncommon. There is no respite for people aged between 18 and 60 with terminal or chronic illnesses, treasurer Mary Loft said. Adults are often taken care of in old people’s homes – even though the 2018 Royal Commission

into Aged Care Quality and Safety recommended no people under the age of 65 should enter or live in residential aged care. The centre will be built on a disused basketball court in Ross Street, Queanbeyan. The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has leased the block of land for 30 years at peppercorn rates ($450 per year). Workers will put shovels in the ground in the second half of the year, Mr Walshe said, and the facility will open middle to late next year. The NSW and Federal Governments have each given $750,000 to build the facility, but Mr Walshe says it will need government support for running costs. Although fees will be minimum, it will cost more than $1 million a year to run the facility. “I don’t want to be standing here in 18 months’ time and saying this is our beautiful building – but unfortunately, we can’t open the doors because we don’t have any money to run it,” he said. - Nick Fuller

Flood mitigation Firstly, congratulations to Germany for announcing it will not now be closing its remaining nuclear power and gas fired power stations and will significantly raise defence expenditure by over 40 per cent. It’s about time! These measures will help the EU and NATO counter Putin into the future. I was honoured to be asked to address a Ukrainian demonstration outside the Russian embassy on the weekend and was heartened by the support the brave people of Ukraine were getting from people of many nationalities, including ordinary decent concerned Canberrans of Russian descent. Events in Ukraine were not the only disaster this week as the East Coast of Australia battled huge floods. As usual, there has been great community spirit in helping people affected by the floods, but some areas noticeably coped better than others. After the dreadful 1956 floods, Grafton decided to build levee banks and accordingly was not nearly as badly affected as other places such as Lismore. Levee banks work. Wagga has survived floods for

8

well over a century because of its levee banks. One way to mitigate floods is for flood-prone towns to build levee banks. This is something the whole able-bodied community can help do. Another thing all state governments (helped where appropriate by the federal government) can do is build dams to control floods. A revised Burdekin scheme could do wonders for flood prevention in Queensland and could divert floodwaters into the Murray Darling Basin thus help drought proof Australia and save the Darling River in the process. Here in Canberra, we were very lucky to have a forward-thinking Chief Minister in Jon Stanhope who built from 2007 onwards a new enlarged Cotter Dam, increasing the ACT’s water storage capacity by over 30 per cent. As Opposition Leader at the time, I fully supported him and so it became a non-issue and stymied any ill-informed criticism and opposition from the green left who for some strange reason don’t like dams. It was the first new dam built in Australia in over 20 years and played a big role in encouraging some sensible Liberal/

Labor state governments to build new dams. I see some of the usual suspects bleating about the worsening climate causing more and more significant events like big floods. Yes, China and Russia have a lot to answer for in refusing to stop building more coal fired power stations, but if the Ukraine invasion is anything to go on, I can’t see them taking any notice of the West on this. They see an advantage in them doing so. We will all just have to adjust and learn to live with climate change, which incidentally, humans have done successfully for millennia. In the meantime, let’s mitigate the damage, build levees and new houses away from floodprone areas and build more dams to control and harness flood waters. Shen Yun feature

Shen Yun returns to the Canberra Theatre for two shows only, on Thursday 31 March and Friday 1 April.

Shen Yun makes its return to the Capital, restoring hope and tradition

S

hen Yun is a long-time Canberra favourite – the New York-based company has brought its sublime traditional Chinese dance and orchestral music to the Canberra Theatre almost every year since 2007, soon after it was founded. The last two years of COVID have made travel impossible, but now Canberra is among the seven cities Shen Yun is visiting in Australia in the first year of its return to touring the globe. Shen Yun will be at the Canberra Theatre for two shows only, on Thursday 31 March and Friday 1 April. Canberrans are particularly lucky, because we were a last-minute addition to the schedule thanks to the Australian government dropping quarantine requirements for international visitors. This gave Shen Yun another seven days to perform, and we in Canberra are able to enjoy two of them, right after the dancers arrive in Australia. While by now most Canberrans who enjoy the arts will be familiar with the world class talent

and artistry that characterises a Shen Yun performance, it has been a while. Following is a reminder about what makes Shen Yun so special, and why it’s the can’t-miss performance of the season. First, Shen Yun reclaims the lost heritage of China’s divine tradition. While China used to be known as “The Land of the Divine”, where people sought harmony among Heaven, Earth, and humankind, since 1949 those ideas have been threatened by the communist government. Since 2006 Shen Yun has been committed to reviving this spiritual heritage. It’s non-profit and independent of any government. Second, Shen Yun is the foremost exhibitor of classical Chinese dance in the world today. This style of dance contains flips, spins, tumbles, and a variety of elegant poses and gestures that were developed and refined over thousands of years. Shen Yun performs classical Chinese dance in its purest form, preserving its traditional aesthetic the way it was originally passed down.

The company also incorporates ethnic and folk dances, whether from Mongolia or Tibet, and it depicts in dance some of China’s most well-known folk stories and fables. Third, Shen Yun brings a live orchestra, the first permanent combination of classical Western and Eastern instruments. These include the soul-stirring erhu and the delicate pipa, on top of a full Western orchestra of strings, percussion, woodwinds, and brass. Fourth, Shen Yun revives traditional bel canto singing, which uses the upper register of the singer to project the voice throughout the auditorium. This particular style is seldom seen and has been reintroduced and spread around the world by Shen Yun. Fifth, Shen Yun uses vibrant and colourful costumes that breathe fresh life into every dance piece and story. The clothing ideas are inspired by thoughts of what divine beings in the heavens wear; they also draw from the distinctive styles of China’s dynasties, regions, and ethnicities.

All supplied images Copyright Shen Yun Performing Arts

Sixth, Shen Yun has a highly refined and unique form of stagecraft created from its synchronisation of choreography, lighting, sound and stage design. Seventh, Shen Yun’s innovative three-dimensional projection, behind the performers, extends the stage right into divine realms. This allows a dynamic interaction between on-stage and off-stage, where beings both float up into the heavens and descend to the earth. Eighth, Shen Yun’s artists are spiritual seekers on a journey. They meditate daily and live by the principles of truth, compassion and tolerance. This inner self-discipline comes through in the sublime artwork they create. The sense of vocation by Shen Yun performers is a unique feature of the show, and audiences always pick up on it. Ninth, Shen Yun refreshes its entire performance – choreography, music, songs, costumes, backdrops and storylines – every year. This is a vast undertaking, but Shen Yun has done it every year for the last 14 years. It’s also why audiences keep coming back. Given that this is Shen Yun’s first tour since the pandemic began, it’s likely that the current year’s performances will be particularly special and unique. While remaining off-tour for much of the last two years, Shen Yun dancers and musicians haven’t been slacking off. They’ve created their own clothing line – Artist Fashion (artistfashion.com) – and

Shen Yun is the foremost exhibitor of classical Chinese dance in the world today.

video production channel – Shen Yun Creations (shenyuncreations.com). Apart from the company travelling Australia, Shen Yun has six other dance companies currently touring elsewhere in the world, including Europe and North America. As the first tour post-pandemic, the

performers are very excited to be hitting the road and entertaining audiences again. Shen Yun will also perform in Sydney, Melbourne, Bendigo, Toowoomba, Gold Coast and Adelaide. Please visit shenyun.com for tickets in Canberra and elsewhere in Australia or call 6275 2700.

Canberrans continue rallying in support of Ukraine

Last week saw the beginning of peaceful demonstrations initiated by Canberrans who have been protesting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and activists don’t plan on putting down their signs just yet. On Friday 4 March, a group of protesters rallied outside the office of the European Union delegation in Yarralumla and called on the EU Ambassador to “cover the sky” over Ukraine. The Parish Priest of the Canberran Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Father Michael Solomko, showed up to urge the EU to protect innocent civilians in Ukraine. “As Christians and Europeans… we implore you as your fellow Christians. Please, stop this,” Father Michael said. EU Ambassador, Michael Pulch, came down to meet the protesters and said the issue is of “great and utmost concern”. “We are doing more on this than we have ever been able to do. We have imposed the most massive sanctions against Russia that the European Union has ever imposed on any other country,” Mr Pulch said. “We will do whatever it takes to support you in that fight.” Amongst the protesters was Ukrainian aviation safety expert and lecturer in Canberra, Dr Oleksandra Molloy, who said her family there were fighting for their lives. “My family in Ukraine, and all Ukrainians, are struggling right now, so I have a mission to pass on the message to implement a no-fly zone,” Dr Molloy said. After more than a week of protests on the Canberra Avenue median strip outside the Russian Embassy in Griffith, several hundred people gathered peacefully there on Saturday 5 March.

A series of speakers representing various communities – from Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece and Australia, among others – addressed the crowd to a constant chorus of honking horns from passing vehicles blaring their support for Ukraine. Among those present was Dr Roman Danylak, a university computing academic who conducts the Ukrainian men’s choir in Canberra. “I speak to my relatives regularly. It’s heartbreaking to hear what they are going through at the moment,” Dr Danylak said. “We are absolutely appalled by what Putin and the Russian government are doing to Ukraine.” On Sunday 6 March, it was standing room only at Canberra’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church as the local community gathered to pray for Ukraine. Amongst the sea of blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag was ACT Senator Zed Seselja, who said he was there to show solidarity with Ukrainians. “The sentiment in the church is lots of sadness and worry for their loved ones, and they want to see the Ukrainian people prevail in this battle,” Senator Seselja said. “I encourage people to get behind the number of appeals for support with their money, because we just need to find every way to support the people of Ukraine.” This Saturday 12 March at 10am there will be another rally outside the Russian Embassy in Griffith, organised by the Ukrainian community with support from locals. Members of the ACT Ukrainian community invited Canberrans to join them in peaceful protest. - Abbey Halter

Old Bus Depot Markets feature

Old Bus Depot Markets is back! For the past two years, there’s been a giant bus depot sized hole in the Kingston foreshore precinct, with Canberra’s favourite Sunday Market, the Old Bus Depot Markets, a notable absence from Canberra’s Sunday shopping scene. That’s all about to change with the Old Bus Depot Markets returning to trade on Sunday 20 March, and Market organisers revealing they’ll be back refreshed, revitalised and excited to open their doors to the local community, stallholders and visitors to Canberra. “We are so excited to be back, we’ve really missed welcoming Canberrans to Market every Sunday,” said Old Bus Depot Markets Manager, Richard Vagi. The popular Markets have been closed since 15 March 2020, with

the operators having faced two very challenging years. “We were affected by smoke from the 2019/20 summer bushfires, we then experienced hail damage to our roof, leading straight into the Covid-19 pandemic, then building contamination, followed by a second run of lockdowns and restrictions which delayed opening. “Our valuable stallholders are ready to put that all behind them and join together with some new stallholders, to emerge with new and interesting products. The reaction from stallholders has been overwhelmingly positive as the Market serves as a way for many of these small local and regional businesses to make a living,” Richard said. So, what can Canberrans expect

After two long years, the Old Bus Depot Markets will reopen on Sunday 20 March 9.30am–2.30pm.

when the Markets return on Sunday 20 March? Richard says there will be fresh faces, and loads of fresh produce and artisan-made goods. There will be a good mix of new, along with some old favourites muchloved and missed by the Canberra community. The space itself has also undergone some major renovations which will bring customers an improved Markets experience. And there’s new

Affordable Dentures and Implants cover feature

3D technology changing the face of leading local dental implant and denture clinic Clinical director Leif Svensson says because Affordable Dentures and Implants specialises only in tooth replacement treatments, patients can be assured they are in expert hands.

ental implants are becoming more affordable due to new digital scanning technologies available to patients. Affordable Dentures and Implants, located in Phillip, is leading the way in the ACT region and offering affordable – and comfortable – solutions for denture and implant procedures that were once out of reach for many patients. Dental implant treatments are also less invasive with greater accuracy and efficiency, revolutionising the way patients receive their new, healthy smiles, says Leif Svensson, Clinical Director of Affordable Dentures and Implants.

Having completed more than 3,000 digital scans himself, Svensson says “the digital process is a lot more comfortable for our patients and gives patients betterfitting implants and dentures faster and more affordably.” Over 1,000 images of your teeth are taken in less than one second, using a 3D digital scanner not much larger than your electric toothbrush. The accuracy is impeccable. These images are then transformed into cosmetic implant teeth or dentures in far fewer appointments. And for those patients who can’t stand the gooey impression moulds, this is a real game-changer in the comfort department. “Because the digital capture

Successful outcomes have greatly improved for implant treatments due to digital implant planning at Affordable Dentures and Implants process is shorter than the traditional process, patient appointments have been in many instances halved, making implant and denture treatments more affordable and much more comfortable,” says Svensson. “Successful outcomes have greatly improved for implant treatments due to digital implant planning at Affordable Dentures and Implants.” Digital implant steps are now

so amazing. The digital scan is combined with your X-ray and the implant surgeons are able to do a simulated surgery to determine the best size implant and highest quality of bone. From this step, a 3D printed guide is constructed that is used on the day of surgery to guide the surgeon to place the implant in just the right spot. With the average Australian adult reportedly missing 4.5 teeth, missing teeth can affect your

ability to speak, eat and smile, taking a toll on a person’s quality of life. The experienced team at Affordable Dentures and Implants focuses solely on replacing missing teeth, meaning you can continue seeing your regular dentist. When asked what the key to this clinic’s success is, Svensson’s response is simple: “We don’t do

cleans, fillings, or general dental work. We only do tooth replacement treatments, so you could say, well yes, we’ve gotten very good at it”. “With a number of payment plans and also health fund options available, we have really tried to allow our patients every possible option to smile and eat to their very best.”

As well as offering patients a more comfortable experience, the accuracy and speed of gamechanging 3D technology also results in better fitting and more affordable dental implants and dentures.

More funding for homelessness services The pandemic left more Canberrans homeless and sleeping on the streets, so community services have welcomed $2.5 million from the ACT Government to expand homelessness services and help rough sleepers find accommodation. Winter Lodge (run by Argyle Housing) was set up in 2020 to provide temporary accommodation for homeless men during winter; it has received $90,000 to run all year round, rather than for only six months, and will change its name to Ainslie Lodge. Since it opened, it has housed 380 men sleeping rough, of whom 100 moved into long-term housing in Ainslie Village or the private rental market, said Justin Nyholm, Argyle Housing’s project manager. OneLink (run by Woden Community Service) will receive $906,000 for its rough sleepers project, which has helped 40 people

sleeping on the streets find immediate accommodation (in hotels) and then housing. OneLink leases the property for 12 months while the client considers what they need to have a long-term, secure and safe home, explained Lynton Sheehan, Woden Community Service’s director of housing and community services. That $906,000 will also pay for a community mental health specialist for a year, to help rough sleepers access specialist mental health services. The specialist will be skilled in housing and homelessness, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, family support, and youth support. More than 90 per cent of people sleeping rough on the street have chronic mental illness and issues with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, explained Anne Kirwan, CEO of Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn. on the streets has the equivalent of six years’ impact on their physical and mental health, Mr Sheehan said; they struggle to access basic services like GPs, dentists, and mental health professionals. “The more support someone has around their mental health and wellbeing, the more connected they are with a community … the less likely they are to experience homelessness,” Mr Sheehan said. OneLink will also receive $1.56 million to meet an increase in demand and complexity of clients. The agency will use some of this to hire more staff; OneLink receives up to 900 calls a month from Canberrans seeking help with homelessness, said CEO Jenny Kitchin. But OneLink will use most of those funds to broker money to other organisations that provide support or case management services for homeless people. Last year, Canberra Weekly’s four-part series for Homelessness

Week in August revealed that homelessness significantly increased during the pandemic, from 1,600 people in July 2017 to 1,887 in March 2021 – due above all to housing affordability. That was before the lockdown. Since then, demand for housing has increased; OneLink took 7,800 inquiries from Canberrans, and accommodated 193 individuals or families in hotels, Mr Sheehan said. More than 2,000 Canberrans were homeless, said ACTCOSS CEO Dr Emma Campbell, and more than 30 per cent of clients who approached homelessness services with a need for accommodation did not have their needs met. The ACT Government has committed to spend $18 million over the next four years to address homelessness. Over the last year, the ACT Government spent $12 million more for homelessness services, on top of the $27 million it provides annually.

ACT Chief Justice McCallum sworn in on IWD Lucy McCallum was sworn in as the ACT’s new Chief Justice on International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 March, succeeding Helen Murrell, the ACT’s first female Chief Justice. Justice McCallum worked as a public prosecutor in Canberra in the 1980s. She was appointed Justice in the Common Law Division of the NSW Supreme Court in 2008, and elevated to the NSW Court of Appeal in January 2019. Justice McCallum believes the law should serve the underprivileged, and she has said she will focus on cementing the ACT’s reputation as a place of excellent jurisdiction. “I am delighted with the calibre of judicial excellence that Chief Justice McCallum brings with her,” said ACT Attorney-

General Shane Rattenbury. He said Chief Justice McCallum’s passion for reducing the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the justice system – which she has called “a national tragedy” – would greatly assist in improving justice in the ACT. Chief Justice Murrell was the ACT’s first woman Chief Justice, appointed in 2013. Under her leadership of the ACT Supreme Court, the Drug and Alcohol Sentencing List was established; new case management and listing practices saw a significant reduction in hearing delays; and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic for the court were successfully navigated, Mr Rattenbury said.

To the editor I am a landlord who has just read the Canberra tenant launches petition after ‘distressing’ eviction article on page 6 of Canberra Weekly (3 March 2022). With all the legislative changes to the Residential Tenancies Act over the past few years, I’m finding it hard to justify hanging onto our investment properties, which were purchased by many, many sacrifices by my husband and me. The ACT Government has made landlords part of the ACT’s welfare system by not allowing landlords to increase rents in line with the market. I believe our properties are each now between $50 and $150 per week behind market rent. The rents were for us to live on in retirement. Another factor we have to consider when deciding on the future of our properties is the huge

increases in General Rates and Land Tax, especially the latter. If we sell, we will most likely purchase investment properties in NSW. - Name withheld I refer to I. Pilsner’s Letter to the Editor (CW 3 March 2022, page 17). Yet another smug, simplistic rant denying that human activities are interfering with natural climate cycles. The tired generic arguments he repeats, along with many conspiracy theorists and single issue “experts”, have been countered by many who know better. He simply does not appear to understand the science behind the enhanced greenhouse effect, and ignores options for storing renewable energy. If Pilsner wishes to gain any credibility, he could study the last two IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel

on Climate Change) reports and publish a critique of their main points, which distil the research, modelling and conclusions of thousands of experts. I look forward to reading any reasoned rebuttals he may come up with, but I am not holding my breath. - I. Lambert, Garran. Re: Z. Seselja Drugs laws must keep our kids safe (CW 3 March 2022, page 8). The senator’s vehement words against making any changes to our existing laws sound exactly the same as all his predecessors who refuse to change our out-of-date regulations. There is one question I would like to address to the senator: How have our existing laws served the community in reducing the use of any drugs in the last 3-4 decades? The way we think about illicit drug use has changed, because we know more about why people turn to drugs in the first place. We know how they are seduced into drug use and how the “habit” takes over. The drug addict is not a criminal, they are distressed, abused and frightened individuals, who are unable to help themselves. They become criminals during the addiction process. So how do we ‘help’ these addicts currently? They are arrested, judged, imprisoned and often forced to go cold turkey in a lockup. If they are convicted, they are sent to jail, where more often than not their habit is reinforced and their criminal acumen augmented. Is there a better way to help them and guide them to being free of drug dependency?

Yes, there is. If a person is caught with a small amount (for their own use) of a prohibited drug, they should be sent to a rehabilitation facility to recover and be counselled. There is enough data from overseas that shows that this kind of intervention works and is far more successful than imprisonment. - CL Ford, Conder. Drugs are not dangerous because they are illegal; drugs are illegal because drugs are dangerous. There is no such thing as “soft drugs” and “hard drugs”, nor bona fide criteria to differentiate between these terms. People who refer to hard or soft drugs generally do not understand the truth about drugs, they may be seeking to soften attitudes towards the use of certain illicit drugs. The toxic properties of chemical molecules and their cellular damage are not matters of opinion or debate. Research has proven during annual surveys of high school students in US that perception of harm is linked to use: as more young people believe a drug is harmful, fewer use it. Drugs threaten future generations. Drugs impair male and female functions. The United Nations ban against illicit drugs preceded, by one half century, the international measures taken to protect future generations against external pollutants. Captain Jacques Yves Cousteau stated: “For sheer survival we must defend ourselves against both kinds of pollution which destroy our environment and threaten future generations”. - H Baker, Maleny QLD 4552

Canberrans open their hearts for HelpingACT

Canberra Weekly had a special visitor last week: Helping ACT’s Mohammed Ali, proudly displaying the charity’s new delivery van. The silver people mover with cheerful yellow livery replaced Mr Ali’s black van, which broke down beyond repair late last year. For three years, Mr Ali and friends have distributed food and other goods to Canberrans in need. The public well knows the good work Helping ACT does – and when Mr Ali needed help in his turn, they were glad to help, and did so generously. He set up a GoFundMe page aiming to raise $20,000 to help the charity get back on the road – and raised $10,000 more. In a period of three weeks, HelpingACT received $30,000 – enough to buy a Honda Odyssey

seven-seater from Canberra Toyota in Phillip, and a trailer, too. Many families and individuals from Canberra and broader Australia supported the cause, Mr Ali said, while substantial donations came from ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr (a special government grant of $5,000) and the Uniting Mirinjani Weston ACT aged care home residents ($2,500). “Thank you, all #KenBehrens! You have helped HelpingACT to reaffirm its belief in fragrance rather than thorns, in the beauty of life and in working together to make life more beautiful.” Mr Ali particularly thanked Canberra Toyota in Phillip for their generous deductions; Mirko Milic and Amir Hyatti for their support; and the St Vincent de Paul Society and other volunteers who lent cars and helped deliver food . - Nick Fuller

Outstanding women lauded Kelli-Ann Jackson was crowned ACT Woman of the Year earlier this month for her work leading Women’s Adventure ACT. The volunteer-led, communityorganised group, treks to keep the outdoors safe and accessible to women and gender-diverse people of all backgrounds. The world trekking adventurer had previously ridden the length of Taiwan and South Korea on a unicycle and became the first person in the world to unicycle in North Korea. As leader of Women’s Adventure ACT, she has helped boost the knowledge, outdoor skills, safety-awareness, fitness, and confidence of over 4,100 Canberran women. Asha Clementi, 23, was named the ACT Young Woman of the Year for founding ‘Girls Run the

World’ and co-founding ‘The Girls Leadership Network’. The programs inspire young women to pursue leadership and engage in diplomacy by providing participants the opportunity to spend a day in a participating Embassy. Clementi was just 18 when she founded The Girls Leadership Network. The 2022 ACT Senior Woman of the Year is Lee-Anne Daley, a Wiradjuri woman who works with parents, carers, aunties, and grandmothers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to share and engage with cultural knowledge. She also facilitates The Koori Girls group, which works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls to build links within the community. - Anja de Rozario

sport Caps thump Flyers The Canberra Capitals have moved into second place on the WNBL ladder after a dominant 106-62 win over the Southside Flyers on Saturday night, 5 March. Meanwhile, head coach Paul Goriss will leave the club after the 2021-22 season. Their next match is against the Perth Lynx in WA on 12 March.

Brumbies beat Tahs The Brumbies have made it three wins in a row to start the season after defeating the NSW Waratahs 27-20 at GIO Stadium on Saturday night. The win has the Brumbies in second place on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder, one point behind the Crusaders. It was a different result in the Brumbies Super W opener, losing 22

CNK ready to bounce back in 2022 Despite coming off an injury affected 2021 campaign and a disrupted pre-season, Canberra Raiders fullback Charnze NicollKlokstad is optimistic about the 2022 NRL season. “Last year was a really draining year for a lot of individuals and the club, so I think just being able to come in, put everything behind us, start fresh, everyone took a lot of motivation out of that,” he said. “It’s a really high priority for us to bounce back this year.” The Raiders start their season against the Cronulla Sharks at GIO Stadium this Friday 6pm. GIVIT seeks pre-loved laptops and tablets GIVIT is working with trusted agencies across the ACT region to sustainably provide IT essentials to those doing it tough. Requests for laptops and tablets are wide and varied, as Canberra’s most vulnerable face a range of challenges amid the pandemic. They include survivors of domestic violence, including a single mum with primary and high school aged students requiring laptops for online learning and resources, as well as a young woman in recovery who needs access to online mental health programs and to stay connected with her family interstate. Requests also include indigenous support, such as a child in Kinship care who requires a tablet to help regulate behaviours from trauma responses, and a Year 10 student eager to re-engage with her studies but cannot afford a Chromebook which is essential for her learning. One agency is also trying to assist a newly settled refugee couple facing financial hardship and mental health issues who require a laptop to support their learning of English as a second language. Access to essential devices will make an incredible difference in their lives. GIVIT is calling on generous Canberrans and businesses to rehome any IT essentials no longer in use with those in need. Any pre-loved laptops and tablets that are wiped clean of personal data can be delivered to, or collected by, the requesting organisation. 825g pear halves, drained if tinned For the honey caramel 125g salted butter 125g soft brown sugar 20g honey, plus 20g extra, for glazing For the cake 2 eggs 200g white (granulated) sugar 125ml milk 230g self-raising flour finely grated zest of 1 lemon 125g salted butter, melted, and cooled slightly Preheat the oven to 160°C. Grease a 23 x 30cm slab tin, 6cm deep. Line the base with baking paper and then grease again. To make the honey caramel: Melt the butter, brown sugar, and honey together. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 minute, whisking. Pour into the base of the tin. Cut

Makes 12 For the pastry 120g plain (all-purpose) flour 20g self-raising flour 1/2 tsp sea salt 70g cold salted butter, diced

Honey caramel topsy turvy pear cake Serves 8–12

Spinach, goat’s cheese & roasted tomato tarts

each pear half into four slices and place them decoratively over the caramel.

45g natural or Greek-style yoghurt For the filling 200g cherry tomatoes 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil 120g spinach or silver beet leaves, washed and finely sliced 90ml milk

To make the cake: Using hand-held beaters or a stand mixer, beat all the cake ingredients for 2 minutes. Spoon the batter over the pears, then carefully level the mixture with a spatula, leaving it just slightly concave in the middle.

2 tsp cornflour

Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until a metal skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

110g goat’s cheese, crumbled

Allow to stand for 5minutes before turning the cake out onto a wire rack; the pears will be on top. Position a plate underneath the rack so that it sits under the cake. (This way any spilled caramel can be retrieved by spooning it up and over the cake.)

To make the pastry: Place the flours, salt and butter in a food processor and process until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. (Alternatively, this can be achieved by rubbing the ingredients together with your fingers.) Transfer to a large bowl and make a well in the centre.

Heat the extra honey in a small saucepan until warmed through and runny, then spoon over the cake. Cool the cake for 15 minutes before cutting into squares to serve.

5 eggs, lightly whisked 1/4 tsp sea salt (optional) 2 spring onions, finely sliced 1 garlic clove, crushed 60g parmesan, finely grated

In a separate bowl, whisk together the yoghurt with 40ml cold water. Add enough of the yogurt mixture to the flour to make a soft dough, adding

extra liquid if needed. Wrap in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to firm up before using. To make the filling: Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place the tomatoes in an ovenproof dish and drizzle with the olive oil. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the tomatoes have softened a little and the skin blisters. Set aside to cool, leaving the oven on. Place the spinach in a heatproof bowl. Pour boiling water over the leaves, then leave to stand for 1 minute before draining in a colander and leaving to cool. Place on paper towel and squeeze out any excess liquid. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk with the cornflour to make a paste, then whisk in the eggs and salt (if using). Stir in the spring onion and garlic. Transfer to a jug and set aside. To assemble for baking: Grease 12 x 50ml tart tins or a 12-hole muffin tin. Roll the pastry out thinly on a lightly floured surface. Cut circles to fit the base and side of the tins and press into place. Distribute the goat’s cheese, tomatoes, and blanched leaves evenly between the pastry cases and then carefully pour the egg mixture over the top. Sprinkle with the parmesan. Bake for 5 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 150°C and bake for 10 minutes more, or until the filling has set. Leave to stand in the tins for 5-10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire rack. canberraweekly.com.au

The study from money.co.uk used fresh methodology this year, adding metrics that reflect what proved important throughout 2021. As in the past, global cities were analysed according to seven factors of a healthy lifestyle: obesity levels, life expectancy, pollution levels,

health care, safety, crime rate, and sunlight hours. This year, additional factors included the number of psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers per 100k population, current health expenditure, how many of the population has access to health support, and prevalence of substance use disorders. Against this new methodology, Canberra climbed two places from last year! Not only are we one of the safest cities in the world, ranking seventh overall, our health care ranks third. Adelaide and Brisbane also made the Top 20. We were beaten twice by Spain, with Valencia and Madrid taking first and second place. Following us was Lisbon, Tokyo, and Zurich - who had the lowest crime rate and highest safety score amongst all the cities. Closing off the top 10 were Vienna, Chiang Mai in Thailand, Adelaide, and the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. Australia ranked 16th healthiest country in the world overall, with first and second place snagged by Japan and Switzerland respectively. Great work Canberrans for leading the way! Domino’s stores across Queensland, NSW, and ACT donated $1 from every pizza sold on Wednesday 9 March to GIVIT’s Storms and Flooding Appeal, to support those impacted by the storms and heavy rainfall that caused flooding across both states. The devastating flood events have left tens of thousands of homes and businesses damaged and without power. Van Gogh Alive host, renowned actress and occasional retail assistant, Amanda Muggleton, has derived great joy from the “plethora of life” she has encountered on the job.

Van Gogh Alive producer, Andrew Kay, said the transportable ‘Grand Pavilion’ that houses the exhibition took seven weeks to set up atop the Parkes Place Lawns.

Van Gogh comes alive in Canberra Van Gogh Alive, an immersive, sensory experience that brings the eponymous artist’s extraordinary body of work to life, opened in Canberra to great fanfare on Friday 4 March. Set inside the world’s largest transportable exhibition building, dubbed The Grand Pavilion, it took organisers seven weeks to set it up atop the Federation Centenary Fountains on Parkes Place Lawns. “What a location,” Van Gogh Alive producer, Andrew Kay, told Canberra Weekly, “the fountain hasn’t been used for 40 years, and we have the cheek to put a building on top of it!” Taking such a prominent location meant it wasn’t a straightforward build: they encountered anti vaccine mandate protestors and had to remove 40 years’ worth of duck poo from the fountains. “We’ve had to clean the entire site for the first time in decades, and then build.” Unlike a typical art exhibition, Van Gogh Alive starts “the moment you walk toward the building”. The interiors - all designed by

Australian theatrical designer Anna Cordingley – whisk you out of Canberra and into another world where Van Gogh’s beautiful postimpressionist paintings have been brought to life. Rooms in the pavilion dedicated to Van Gogh’s most recognisable masterpieces, Sunflowers and Starry Night, are sure to saturate many Canberra Instagram feeds during the exhibition’s five-week stay. “People walk in that door, look at the beautiful ceiling, and it starts from there,” Kay said. “And a lot of people leave crying because it’s an emotional experience looking at his life.” High-definition projectors cast 3000 images telling the Dutch artist’s story, many animated with movement, onto 32 Imax-sized screens. The images are synchronised to a popular classical music score, while an aroma evoking southern France permeates the space. The 42-minute projection display tells Van Gogh’s life story in chronological order, starting in his

homeland, the Netherlands, where he painted primarily in black and white. From there we go to France, where he both discovered colour and suffered a host of mental health issues that had him admitted to an asylum – where he painted Starry Night. Throughout the show, excerpts from letters Van Gogh sent home are projected, detailing “the torment of his life”. “Van Gogh is such an interesting guy, he really did die not knowing he was a success, so it’s a tragic story,” Kay said. For Van Gogh Alive host and occasional retail assistant, Amanda Muggleton, moving from the familiarity of the theatre to the unknown of a permanent exhibition space has been “heavenly”. “For the first month I did nothing but sob and cry, because I realised what a sheltered life I’ve led; I’ve either been in front of a camera or behind a proscenium arch. “It’s like someone’s given me a safety rope I’ve never had in the 45-50 years I’ve been acting.” Spending her time leading

groups through the exhibition and working the merchandise stand on occasion, Muggleton has derived great joy from the “plethora of life” she has encountered on the job. “You have everyone from intellectuals through to people who have never been to anything like this in their life, and they’re the ones I love because they’re so blown away by what they see in there.” Founder and CEO of Grande Experiences, Bruce Peterson, said the Van Gogh Alive experience is akin to “a walk through a cinematic production”. “They don’t have to understand who Vincent is, his genre, or anything about art history,” he said. “They just get lost in the big, broad, brush strokes, colour and music, and for kids it means their first [art exhibition] experience is a happy one, and I think that’s really important.” Van Gogh Alive is on at the Grand Pavilion at Parkes Place Lawns, National Triangle until 10 April; vangoghalive.com.au - Denholm Samaras canberraweekly.com.au

the first time in the nation’s capital, 10 world premiere seasons, a host of productions with local ties, and a major musical. Canberra Theatre Centre director, Alex Budd, said the season offers an array of works spanning Broadway hit musical theatre through to intimately told Australian stories. “We are so proud of this joyful season that features something for everyone, from West End and Broadway hit musicals to uniquely Australian stories, giving our audiences a reason to come together and share the thrill of live performance,” he said. Headlining the program is critically acclaimed musical Girl From the North Country, written and directed by Conor McPherson and with music and lyrics by Bob Dylan. This Australian premiere season, which began in Sydney at the start of the year, stars stage and screen icon Lisa McCune, alongside Zahra Newman, Terence Crawford, Helen Dallimore, and Peter Carroll. Their Canberra run will commence in August.

McCune told Canberra Weekly she was thrilled to come to the Canberra Theatre for what would be her first live performance in the capital. “I can’t remember if my first job out of drama school ever came here,” she said, “it will definitely be my first time at the Canberra Theatre.” McCune attributed Budd for her Canberra debut; she worked with him on several productions when he was an executive producer at Opera Australia. “He’s going to bring a lot of people here, I think,” she said. Local works that will feature this season include highly talented young Canberra writer Dylan Van Den Berg’s new play Whitefella Yella Tree, children’s musical group The Beanies’ Egg-straordinary Day, and the Canberra Youth Theatre, which celebrates their 50th anniversary with four productions at Canberra Theatre. QL2 Dance will also present Terra Firma with their Quantum Leap Ensemble. (continued page 32)

It will feature a huge range of shows including; The Opening Night Gala, Ronny Chieng, Tripod, Stephen K Amos, Georgie Carroll, Aunty Donna, The Dollop, Claire Hooper, Aaron Chen, Nath Valvo, Kirsty Webeck, Geraldine Hickey, Ivan Aristeguieta, Daniel Connell, Dane Simpson, Tony Martin, Lizzy Hoo, Sam Taunton, Luke Heggie and many more. “Lots of children have found it really difficult being shut up at home without their friends, and escaping into their imagination is a really important way to deal with the anxiety that can be caused from that unusual situation,” she said. “That’s what Ghostie is all about—a little girl who is stuck at home [while] Mum and Dad are working on their computers all day, and out of her wonderful, active imagination comes this little creature called Ghostie who she can have adventures with – creating joy and delight (and mayhem) around the house!” Illustrated by New Zealand artist Mel Armstrong, Ghostie was inspired by the real-life active imagination of Reeder’s granddaughter, Ava. The prolific author’s 20th book, it will launch later this month with an interactive event featuring handmade dolls of both Ava and Ghostie, the reallife Ava dressed in full character, life-sized cut-outs, and an interactive reading of the book by the author. The Ghostie book launch will take place at The Book Cow, Kingston, Saturday, 19 March 3pm; limited tickets available via Eventbrite.

Australia’s performing arts take centre stage at the National Library

Exhibition curator, Dr Susannah Helman, said On Stage showcases the Library’s extensive performing arts collections and reflects “how much Australians love live performance”. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.

Opening earlier this month, the National Library of Australia’s new exhibition, On Stage, is a celebration of Australia’s love of the performing arts. The exhibition features cultural treasures, vibrant characters and milestone moments from Australia’s performing arts history from the 1790s to the present day. Featuring more than 180 objects, this free exhibition brings together highlights from the National Library’s vast performing arts collections. On Stage curator, Dr Susannah Helman, told Canberra Weekly the National Library’s extensive performing arts collections reflects “how much Australians love live performance”. “Australians have loved going to performing arts of all different kinds for decades and centuries,” she said. “As a big fan of live performance of all kinds, I thought I knew the history of Australia’s performing arts, but our collections have opened my eyes to the cultural lives Australians of the

past could have known,” she said. Starting work on the exhibition “a couple of years ago”, the process saw Helman exhaustively survey the National Library’s performing arts collection. It was a highly collaborative project that involved talking to colleagues, reading, and researching extensively, and a lot of looking: “opening drawers, and going with the happy accident kind of thing; you never know what you might find”. “It’s a little overwhelming because we have such a rich collection, and it’s hard to make decisions because you can only fit a certain number of items into a space,” she said. “It’s always a balance, it’s a jigsaw puzzle. It’s just picking out some of the interesting and fascinating stories, and bringing them out of the stacks, and putting them together into a narrative. “It’s been great fun to explore our collections and bring them out.” Having begun work on the exhibition prior to

the COVID-19 pandemic, On Stage is particularly timely and relevant given the devastating effects pandemic restrictions have wreaked on Australia’s performing arts sector. “It’s clear from the collections that Australians have long loved performing arts, and I think we have a rich history as well to look back on and look forward to better days ahead,” Helman said. The exhibition is laid out chronologically, starting with Australia’s earliest surviving document printed in the country, a playbill for a convict-led production at a Sydney theatre in 1796. The entirety of the 20th century is well represented, with rooms documenting the turn of the century, WWII-era, retro 1970s style and design, and more contemporary photographs and posters from the likes of Bangarra, AC/DC, Big Day Out festival, and The Hilltop Hoods. Helman said On Stage brings together a diverse range of stories, making a point of balancing items of great significance alongside others where there’s a lot more than meets the eye. “There are some items that might be a little plain at first, but when you look into them you can find the gold,” she said.

On Stage is laid out chronologically, featuring a 1790s playbill through to contemporary photographs and posters from the likes of Bangarra, Big Day Out festival, and The Hilltop Hoods.

“They show some very interesting details about Australia’s performing arts history, and particularly the passion and activity that has been happening in that sphere.” Props like maquettes used by Jørn Utzon as he designed the Sydney Opera House sit beside printed salary books full of annotations, and a record book of acts than ran at Sydney’s Tivoli Theatre in 1914.

“It’s full of richness, because it basically shows you all of the performers,” Helman said, “you’ve got a comedian, you’ve got dancers, acrobats, gymnasts, contortionists. “I find it really evocative to see that detail.” On Stage: Spotlight on Our Performing Arts is open at the National Library of Australia until Sunday 7 August; nla.gov.au - Denholm Samaras

Book talk Your local, independent bookshop in Kingston Canberra’s newest independent bookshop - stocking a large range of quality new books for readers of all ages.

Jeff Popple reviews three interesting non-fiction books by Australian authors. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Nabbing Ned Kelly by David Dufty Allen & Unwin, $32.99

Canberra author David Dufty turns the Ned Kelly legend on its head by investigating it from the perspective of the police. In this meticulously researched book, Dufty follows the dogged pursuit of Kelly and his gang by a bunch of poorly trained police officers who were always one step behind. By going back to police records, and other sources, he dispassionately looks at the facts, rather than the myth which has grown up. In the process, he has uncovered some intriguing details, including who really wrote the Jerilderie Letter and the truth about Kelly’s criminal career. A well written and very interesting account.

Sheilas by Eliza Reilly Macmillan, $34.99

canberraweekly.com.au

Subtitled ‘Badass Women of Australian History’, Eliza Reilly’s Sheilas also provides a revisionist view of our history. In a highly entertaining manner, Reilly highlights overlooked, extraordinary women from each decade of Australian history “who hiked up their petticoats and fly-kicked down the doors of opportunity for modern Australia”. From bushrangers to war heroes to aviators and civil rights activists, Reilly has uncovered an amazing collection of ‘sheilas’ who should be better known. There are several great stories here, but my favourite is of bushranger Mary Ann Bugg, who was the brains behind the Captain Thunderbolt gang. A terrific and informative read.

Mafioso by Colin McLaren Hachette, $32.99

High profile former Australian police detective, and now author, Colin McLaren, turns his attention to the history of the Mafia with Mafioso. Drawing on a wealth of original material and interviews, McLaren charts the growth of the Mafia from Sicily to worldwide dominance. In clear, lucid prose, he details the early years of the Mafia, including their battles with Mussolini, and evaluates their current influence. He also touches on the activities of the Mafia in Australia. It is a fascinating and often worrying account that raises many compelling issues, particularly around how corruption can take hold of a society.

Now showing The Batman (M) In Gotham City, on Halloween, a mayor is murdered by a masked serial killer calling himself the Riddler (Paul Dano). Meanwhile, the Batman (Robert Pattinson) is into his second year delivering punishment to some street thugs, introducing himself as Vengeance! Soon the bat signal is up in the night sky, where Bats is called upon a crime scene by one Lieutenant James Gordan (Jeffrey Wright) after the Riddler left him a card. Oscar-winner Ben Affleck was to star, produce, co-write, and direct The Batman, that was to be set after the events of Superman v Batman. After Affleck stepped down, writer-director Matt Reeves stepped in with an idea to handle Batman and his rogues gallery away from the DC Extended Universe. Unshackled, Reeves has gone back into Batman’s detective roots for

this reboot, delivering a 1940s-esque film-noir action-adventure thriller. There are no heroes amongst our strong ensemble cast, with Bats himself learning the difference between vengeance, vigilantism, justice, and heroism along the way. The environment is accessible and fluid, with Bats actively seeking leads amongst the criminal underworld to try and keep one step ahead of the Riddler, who appears set on revealing a conspiracy that can rock Batman, the Wayne family and Gotham City to their core. Verdict: An excellent and exciting film-noir thriller that draws upon many Batman movies and comics, all in the vein of Fincher’s Se7en. The groundwork is firmly laid for more entries! 4.5 stars. Enlighten Illuminations

Melbourne based artist Daniel Crooks was commissioned to illuminate the National Gallery of Australis’s façade for the 2022 Enlighten Festival. Crooks’ project celebrates the brutalist design of the original National Gallery building by architect, Col Madigan, beautifully complementing the building’s imposing frontage. Photo: NGA

With Enlighten Festival now underway, Canberra’s national institutions and attractions have been lit up with a series of stunning architectural projections combining light, sound and movement to create a singular mesmerising experience. The Enlighten Illuminations continue until Monday 14 March.

The National Library of Australia has once again been transformed into a living mural as part of Enlighten. Alongside the light show, the Library has enlisted some of Canberra’s finest circus performers to do fire spinning, hula hooping, stilt walking and bubble art. Photo: Julie Samaras.

Questacon cycles through four illumination projections this year: a portrait honouring Questacon’s founder, Professor Michael Gore AO, who passed away earlier this year; one all abouts Mars (pictured); a feature collection of staff-led science demonstrations, and a collage of Questacon exhibits and activities. Priyanka’s monotone moments Star in both Bollywood and Hollywood, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has a favourite look: one colour, from head to toe. Hey, if you look that good in every colour, they should all have their turn in the starlight.

Her warm yellow look, worn on the streets of London, is effortlessly cool when paired with sleek accessories.

She showcases her hourglass figure in this showstopping silver one-shoulder set while shopping in Manhattan.

Her crimson power suit, worn in New York late last year, is teamed with a matching croc belt and complementary lip.

After chatting with the good ladies of The View, she shows off this gorgeous hot pink number. We love the sheer sleeves and velvet corset belt.

This turquoise ensemble carries the same shade all the way down to her boots, and matches the pattern of her coat to her flannel. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Looking powerful in royal purple Vivienne Westwood, Priyanka ties it together with a clutch that seems to be cut from the same cloth.

What we’re talking about All the latest in fashion, health and beauty. Bouncing back after last year’s cancellation due to COVID, the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast’s annual Pre-Loved Fashion Sale will be held 18-19 March. A mecca for fashionistas of the Capital, the sale specialises in vintage and high-end labels. “Sadly, we had to postpone our sale last year due to COVID,’ said Zonta President, Christine Magner. “But it’s good news because we are bursting at the seams with quality fashion labels, thanks to the

generous donations of the women of Canberra. We have never had so much stock.” Money raised will go towards projects empowering women, such as providing home starter kits to assist domestic violence survivors, birthing kits for pregnant women in developing countries, and scholarships for girls in STEM. The Zonta Pre-Loved Fashion Sale includes a pre-sale event, offering champagne and finger food for $25 on Friday evening.

With a family focused layout, a seamless flow between indoors and out, and an enchanting private garden perfect for entertaining, this abode is not one to miss. Agent Alisa Lawrence is the current owner and said it was the ideal home for raising her family. Settled in a lovely neighbourhood just a 10-minute drive to Cooleman Ridge and a short walk to Mount Narrabundah, this home boasts spectacular surrounding landscapes. “Everywhere you look there is something to see. On the one side you have the calming outlook across the pool and the leafy garden, and on the other is expansive views across Canberra,” Ms Lawrence said. “The layout has always worked really well for our family. The kids were spoilt with big bedrooms, and we always had plenty of room for visitors. It’s the ideal home for families who want to stay in the one spot and not have to move again when the kids get older.” Renovations have transformed the

home into an entertainers delight with tasteful design features and oozing with contemporary flair. “When we renovated, I wanted the living space to be somewhere I loved coming home to. We definitely achieved that using textured wallpaper and a grey colour scheme that just feels so liveable,” Ms Lawrence said. “It’s a more classically styled home with a beautiful separation of living, kitchen, and bedroom areas, which makes more sense than an open-plan layout for a family. The updates we’ve completed over the years have really kept with the overall character of the home.”

Revived gothic mansion Braidwood NSW 9 Deloraine Lane Built circa 1879, Deloraine Homestead’s original owner was Mr John Musgrave, the editor of The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal. To say this restored gothic mansion has a rich history is an understatement – it’s one of area’s most magnificent homes and is a piece of the past frozen in time. Agent Michael Fay calls the home a “labour of love” by the current owners, who have lived in 46

canberraweekly.com.au

the mansion for 25 years. “I love the sense of history here. To think, the home was built less than 100 years after the first fleet arrived in Australia. The extensive mature landscaping offering many garden rooms and quiet spots to reflect are a sight to behold,” Mr Fay said. “From the moment you enter, there’s a strong sense of the grandeur of a past age, with high ceilings, fireplaces in most rooms,

and the original hardwood timber floors and staircase. The high quality of the renovations, all still keeping with the period style, allows the new owner to move in and enjoy living here from day one.” This gothic revival would be a superb wedding venue or unique B&B, with the location on the main tourist route from Canberra to the coast and boasting spectacular views from secluded vantage points. “Given the multiple living areas, library, grand dining room, sublime bedrooms, and one of the region’s most impressive gardens,

this property would lend itself to a business enterprise if desired,” Mr Fay said. “A number of the original apple and pear trees are still growing in the garden to this day.”

ACT home values rise by over 30 per cent in seven suburbs Seven of the top 10 ACT suburbs for home value growth all experienced increases of more than 30 per cent in the 12 months to February 2022, according to CoreLogic’s latest Home Value Index (HVI) report. Four of the top 10 suburbs were in Gungahlin – Palmerston (34.7 per cent), Forde (32.4 per cent), Nicholls (31.9 per cent) and Taylor (29.8 per cent); two in Weston – Holder (32.3 per cent) and Waramanga (31.3 per cent); and two in Woden – Farrer (32.0 per cent) and Torrens (29.8 per cent). Also making the list were Watson (31.0 per cent) in the Inner North, and Kambah (29.8 per cent) in Tuggeranong. And although the Australian housing market may be continuing its growth, the HVI report shows it might be finally

running out of steam. House values rose 0.6 per cent nationally in February 2022, which marks the lowest monthly growth since October 2020. In the ACT, the monthly growth was 0.4 per cent in February, which represents a slowdown in the upward trend. In the 12 months to February 2022, Canberra’s housing values experienced a 23.8 per cent rise overall, with the average dwelling price now $909,379. Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth all recorded higher annual value growth than Canberra, and regional Australia showed sustainably higher growth rates than capital cities. The annual growth in rents for houses in Canberra was the third highest of all capital cities sitting at 9.7 per cent, and fourth highest for units at 6.8 per cent.

Canberra lacks planning: PCA The Property Council of Australia’s (PCA) recent report by SGS Economics and Planning shows the ACT needs to significantly increase the Territory’s employment lands or will face unmet population needs. The report highlights the need for more than 330 additional hectares of employment lands to meet population growth by 2050 across the Canberra region. This would ensure local access to urban services for Canberrans. Property Council ACT executive director Adina Cirson said the report shows the need for urgent policy review to ensure demand is met for commercial use and for Canberra to be attractive for new investment. “These projected increases in the population of Canberra and the region have meant forward planning uses of land should meet the needs of the commercial offering,” Ms Cirson said. She said she sees a huge spike in demand for industrial land growth, unprecedented rental growth, and an immediate shortage of warehouse facilities. “We really need to be working hard right now to identify and start the work – like environmental approvals – on the land supply we need in the very near future.”

The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. Tuggeranong Southpoint is only five minutes’ drive away for more substantial shopping.

Room to move Nobody wants to downsize to something poky or impractical. Marigal Gardens offers generous and practical floorplans that are designed for relaxed and comfortable living. And as a resident’s needs change, their home can change too. No matter what the budget, or lifestyle, there are plenty of options to suit. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. Making the most of every day, your way Marigal Gardens is a thriving community with wonderful facilities and a lifeaffirming vibe that residents love. There are organised activities for all tastes should you choose to pursue a long-held passion or try something new. For more unstructured pleasures, catch up for a coffee, indulge in a gym workout or enjoy a relaxing sundowner at the bar. For the young at heart there is Kambah Adventure Playground right next door.

Feeling safe and secure Safety and security are frequently top priorities for buyers when it comes to choosing their new home. With staff onsite 24/7, help or assistance is never far away. And should travel beckon, our team and neighbours make sure a home is well looked after, so residents can take off with confidence. While buyers focus on lots of different reasons when making their decision, most come to a similar conclusion when they have finally settled in. Gay, one of our residents sums it up neatly: “I wish I’d made the move sooner.” For more information, please visit marigalgardens.com.au

CANBERRA I really love living in Canberra. I like the way it’s been planned, and I just think it’s a great city to live in.

MULTICULTURAL FESTIVALS

Photo Abbey Halter

I love going to multicultural festivals and seeing and learning about all the different cultures in the world. I love the different varieties there are, the different foods and the different ways people celebrate.

My favourite things

Father Michael Solomko Parish Priest of the Canberra Ukrainian Orthodox Church Father Michael Solomko was born in Newcastle and has lived in Canberra for 35 years. His parents immigrated to Australia from Ukraine at the end of World War II and met in a displaced persons camp in Germany. Father Michael previously worked as an industrial arts teacher at several schools across the ACT. Married to his wife Kathy, they have two children together - Natalie, 29, who is married, and Nicholas, 26, who is currently travelling through the USA after finishing an apprenticeship. They tragically lost their son Matthew in 2014, and Father Michael says he is always with them. His faith keeps him going, and his whole family join him in his commitment to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Father Michael welcomes all of Canberra to visit the Ukrainian Orthodox Cultural Centre and says it’s well worth checking out the museum. - Abbey Halter

UKRAINIAN FOOD I don’t just like Ukrainian food – I love Ukrainian food. My favourite food would be a sour soup called borscht made with red beetroot.

NRL I’m a big rugby league fan, not so much the AFL. My favourite teams are the Canberra Raiders and the Newcastle Knights.

PRAYER I’m a cradle Orthodox, meaning I was baptised as an infant and raised in the Orthodox Church. I became a priest after first being a singer in church, a reader, and then an altar boy. I don’t know where I’d be without my faith.
