contents 06 From the editor Although my parents and my late brother used to own farms, it’s over five decades since I lived on one. We grow some produce in our veggie patch (the zucchinis have gone gangbusters this year!) and do most of our fresh food shopping at the farmers markets, so I’ve retained a keen awareness of where our food comes from, and the vital role primary producers play in the Australian way of life and economy. Still, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the diversity of farming seen on a four-hour road trip to the NSW Riverina town of Griffith last weekend. From sheep and cattle grazing, lucerne and dryland grain growing to the irrigated grapevines, fruit trees and rice fields of the prolific Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, it renewed my appreciation for our tough country’s primary producers. I salute you! Reasons to be grateful this past week include a wonderful long weekend getaway to Griffith courtesy of the Gem Hotel and their in-house Bull & Bell steakhouse, eating great local food (much of it Italian inspired), meeting some celebrated locals including Bill Calabria AM, the affable and hard-working patriarch at Calabria Family Wines, and exploring the Griffith Rotary Club farmers market, the legendary Hermit’s Cave, and the thriving main street in this bustling city designed by the same pair behind Canberra’s genius design, Walter and Marion Griffin. Bellissimo!

Mohammed Ali named Canberra Citizen of the Year Mohammed Ali, founder and president of local charity HelpingACT, has been named Canberra Citizen of the Year for 2022. At a ceremony at Albert Hall on Tuesday, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said Mr Ali was recognised for his dedication to supporting vulnerable members of the community through his roles with HelpingACT, the ACT Multicultural Advisory Board, the ACT Refugee Asylum Seeker and Humanitarian Coordination Committee, and Companion House. “I feel overwhelmed, completely in disbelief, and very, very humbled,” Mr Ali said. “It is not me who is recognised. What is recognised is definitely my volunteers.” Mr Ali, a Pakistani migrant, retired biochemist, and former Multicultural Volunteer of the Year, founded HelpingACT four years ago to provide food security to vulnerable Canberrans, particularly homeless people, refugees, and asylum seekers. He also started Forum Australia, a thriceyearly panel on issues that concern Australians.
The honour showed “a great recognition for the inequalities and the plight of the people who are struggling at the moment”, Mr Ali said. Canberra’s food need has tripled; every day, HelpingACT receives at least four or five requests for help. Salaries have not risen, and Centrelink payments are low, so some people are only eating half their bodily needs, he said. “To think that this situation will ease in a few weeks’ time, I think, will be fooling ourselves,” Mr Ali said. “This post-COVID era has longer shadows, and we have to prepare. An underclass is developing in Canberra. They are the people with low incomes. And they are finding it hard because petrol prices have gone up, and grocery prices have almost doubled.” HelpingACT delivers food directly to those people; to community organisations like Companion House, Havelock House, the Early Morning Centre, and Woden Community Service; and to street and church pantries. During the 2019/20 bushfires, HelpingACT partnered with Slabs for Heroes to donate goods to fire-

affected areas, and prepared meals for families at evacuation centres. It was a way Canberra’s diverse communities could help people in need, and make Canberra one of the best cities in the world. “Not many cities are as affluent as Canberra,” Mr Ali said. “We take it as a duty to help these people to come out of this cycle. Our dream is that no one sleeps hungry in Canberra.” Last year, the Governor-General himself commended the charity for their hard work, particularly during lockdown. Again, the public paid tribute to HelpingACT when they raised $30,000 – $10,000 more than Mr Ali had hoped – for a new delivery van and trailer. - Nick Fuller Full story online.
Canberra’s rabbit invasion threatens native species They may look “cute”, but Canberra’s widespread rabbit population is threatening native species and conservation efforts, and they’re popping up literally everywhere. Rabbits are a common sight in many urban areas, like the City Hill roundabout, but they’ve recently hopped into precious conservation territory, including the Jerrabomberra Wetlands. In 2017, the ACT Government implemented a Rabbit Control Program which aimed to reduce numbers by releasing a strain of calicivirus into two populations of pest rabbits. The virus-infected populations were living in an area of Namadgi National Park and land adjacent to Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve. Although the program was initially successful, populations have since continued to increase. ACT community organisation, Friends of Grasslands, have been fighting to conserve Canberra’s natural environment since 1994, and the volunteer-led group are “very concerned” over the increase in rabbit numbers. President of Friends of Grasslands, Jamie Pittock, says rabbits are a major threat to the flora and fauna in local bushland. 6
canberraweekly.com.au
“The first key concern is they eat particular plants to extinction, so we need to control the number of rabbits so key wildflower species can survive. The second concern is they support the high population of predator cats and foxes which then also prey on native wildlife,” says Mr Pittock. “We appreciate the ACT Government does undertake rabbit control, and we understand it’s difficult to scale up the control during the wet season. But we’re concerned with the limited number of contractors undertaking these control efforts.” Mr Pittock says he would like to see the ACT Government put more effort into training and accrediting more contractors who can assist in rabbit population control efforts. The Manager for Invasive Species and Overabundant Wildlife at the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) for the ACT Government, Mark Sweaney, said rabbits are the most significant environmental pest in the Territory. “Controlling the rabbits is one of our top priorities. It’s always more challenging in seasons like this with the combination of really good food
available to them, together with a probable decline in the effectiveness of bio controls,” he says. Mr Sweaney says although the rabbit population is one of the EPSDD’s main priorities, many of the rabbit groups don’t reach the threshold level to implement stronger control methods. “If the rabbit population gets above a certain density, then they can have an impact on the environment. We have a threshold so we can control rabbits before they have those impacts but few reserves at the moment have too many rabbits,” he says. He explains the EPSDD focus their efforts on controlling rabbits in certain areas across Canberra where they’ll have the best advantage in reducing the population. “If there’s a lot of rabbits but they’re not causing a huge amount of damage, we don’t put resources there.” According to Mr Sweaney, the control methods currently being used are continuing to have “really good” success in reducing the feral rabbit population. - Abbey Halter

ACT first jurisdiction to divest big fossil fuel shares After years of effort by climate activists and Greens MLAs, the ACT Government no longer has any shares in any of the world’s 200 biggest fossil fuel companies – becoming the first jurisdiction to divest its shares in the industry. “That means Canberra’s no longer putting our investor money into fossil fuels,” said Jo Clay MLA. Divesting the ACT’s portfolio has been a tripartisan achievement spanning more than 20 years. Greens MLAs Kerrie Tucker (1999), Meredith Hunter (2010), and Caroline Le Couteur all advocated for ethical investment. “Governments take a long time to do things,” Ms Le Couteur said. “It is exciting to actually find something you’re involved in actually comes to fruition.” In 2014, 350 Australia, the branch of an environmental organisation that aims to end the use of fossil fuels and transition to renewable energy, identified fossil fuel divestment as a community campaign. It used the Carbon Underground 200, a list of the top coal, gas and oil companies listed by potential carbon emissions, as an indicator of the level of the ACT Government’s
8
canberraweekly.com.au
investment in fossil fuels, said Canberra coordinator Warwick Cathro. After 350.org and the Conservation Council presented evidence to a 2015 estimates committee, its chair, then-Canberra Liberals MLA Brendan Smyth, recommended the ACT responsibly divest 85 per cent of its holdings in fossil fuels. Ms Clay pursued the divestment of the remaining 15 per cent when she was elected in 2020. As recently as September last year, the ACT Government still had holdings in fossil fuel and mining companies, including Rio Tinto and Woodside Petroleum. Only one per cent of the portfolio were fossil fuels, the government told Ms Clay and fellow Greens MLA Andrew Braddock. By the end of that calendar year, a spokesperson said in November, the government would have no holdings in fuel companies, and could exclude investments with direct exposure to proven fossil fuel reserves. The divestment is part of the ACT Government’s nation-leading climate change policy, including 100 per cent renewable electricity, and starting to electrify their transport, Ms Clay said.
“But if we’re putting money into fossil fuel industries and still wrecking the climate, the rest of that good work is getting undermined.” Severe weather events of the last two years have shown why stopping investment in fossil fuels is vital, the Greens believe. Tim Hollo, Greens candidate for Canberra, pointed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s report last month that burning fossil fuels causes the atmosphere to overheat, leading to extreme weather events – such as more frequent and severe floods and fires, of the sort deluging northern NSW and Queensland. “Our task right now is to make the continued burning of fossil fuels simply untenable at any level – politically untenable, economically untenable, and socially shameful,” Greens leader Shane Rattenbury said. Ms Clay hopes other jurisdictions will follow the ACT’s example. She intends to write to her Federal and state and territory counterparts to suggest divestment is “another smart, easy step to get off fossil fuels”. - Nick Fuller

NT inquest must address systemic problems Slava Ukraini! - and the free world continues to marvel at the heroic resistance by the brave Ukrainian people to Putin’s barbarous invasion. Well done, Poland, for pledging its entire Mig 29 fleet of 28 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and shame on Biden for trying to stop it. I do not see much difference between supplying a surface to air missile that will be operated by a Ukrainian soldier and a Mig 29 operated by a Ukrainian pilot. One suggestion on ‘no fly’ zones - why not impose a couple of no fly corridors to get essential supplies into Ukraine from the West and refugees out? There is a precedent: the Berlin airlift in 1948/49. The West must remain resolute. As Margaret Thatcher once said to another American president: “This is no time to go wobbly, George”. Closer to home, the trial of former Canberra man and NT police officer Zachary Rolfe finished with a predictable not guilty verdict. Constable Rolfe served in Afghanistan and had been decorated for bravery whilst in the NT police force. His parents are well known and greatly respected Canberra identities. No one was the winner in this
10
canberraweekly.com.au
unseemly saga and Constable Rolfe, his family and the family of the deceased conducted themselves with dignity and restraint throughout, unlike some people such as Greens justice spokeswoman Lidia Thorpe who commented after the verdict “No justice, no peace”. Canberra Judge John Burns presided in his usual competent manner over a difficult trial and summed up for the jury in a methodical, clear, and fair way. Any verdict other than not guilty in the circumstances would have been perverse as all the evidence pointed to Constable Rolfe just doing his job in very difficult, life-threatening circumstances. With the propensity these days of some groups to be quite intolerant of other views, the presumption of innocence until proven guilty (a bulwark of our system) is under threat. However, juries are known to usually get it right and the onus is on the prosecution to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. The decision by the big wigs in the NT police to charge Constable Rolfe was purely political.
WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
There was little or no evidence to support the charges. In my view, it never should have been made and has only served to cause unnecessary angst to the Rolfe family, Mr Walker’s family and his community. There should have been a coronial inquest first and, as a result of the evidence given at the inquest, a decision should then have been made as to whether there was sufficient evidence to charge Constable Rolfe. Inquests also serve the purpose of correcting systemic problems and there were many problems in Mr Walker’s remote community that needed correcting as it seems there are in what appears to be a politicised NT police force. Let’s hope the coming inquest does just that. Editor’s note: The opinions expressed in this column are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Canberra Weekly.

Narrabundah intersection a ‘death-trap’
Narrabundah residents are calling on the ACT Government urgently to act after another prang at the “dangerous” intersection of La Perouse Street and Carnegie Crescent. Last Wednesday afternoon, 9 March, a car ran into a safety island outside Red Hill Primary School at school pick-up time. “A mum and her kids could have been on that traffic island,” said concerned resident Timothy DeWan. Such accidents are common at the intersection – and Mr DeWan fears it is only a matter of time before someone is killed. “It’s an absolute death-trap, and something will happen,” he said. “We’re going to have a death; we’re definitely going to have a death.” Five schools and several aged care facilities are near the intersection, which witnesses two accidents a week on average – and many nearmisses every day, locals estimate. Last year, Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, said the ACT Government would release a pedestrian safety study. Announced in March, it was delayed by

the pandemic and lockdown. The government has received the final draft and is finalising the report, Mr Steel said. The findings will be shared with the Narrabundah community once they are available. But Mr DeWan believes this is inadequate. “A report won’t save a child. It is direct action that will save a child here.” Mr DeWan wants government engineers to visit Narrabundah, listen to the community’s concerns, then fix the intersection – “not come up with book-based solutions without consultation”. He worries the government’s response will be to visit the intersection at a quiet time, install another traffic island, and tick the problem off their list – a sorry result for more than a year of campaigning. Locals have suggested 40 (or even 30) km/h speed limits, a roundabout, and road markers reminding drivers to slow down. Conversely, the government needs to hurry, Mr DeWan believes; in his view, the government is taking too long. He met Mr Steel and representatives from Roads ACT (Transport and City Services) in March 2021 – a year ago.

Mr DeWan has written to every local MLA; school and community associations have also appealed. “When something happens, no-one within the bureaucracy or government will be able to say we weren’t aware,” he said. “And our politicians will be held to account for this by public opinion.” Canberra Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee, a local MLA, has started a petition calling on the ACT Government to upgrade the intersection to make it safer for children and all road users. “Many local residents have raised their serious concerns about safety at this intersection, and despite me raising these issues with the Minister for years, nothing has been done,” she said. “The ACT Labor-Greens government must take these concerns seriously and take urgent action to fix this dangerous intersection.” - Nick Fuller

The Thornycroft fire tender stands under a tarpaulin in the yard of the Canberra Fire Brigade Museum, Forrest, awaiting restoration. Built in the 1960s, it operated at the Canberra airport until the mid-1990s. It is the only preserved historic vehicle known to have served at the airport from that time intended for public display, and the only 1960s aviation firefighting appliance in the museum’s collection. Now, it will be repainted in its original red – “resprayed and restored to its original colour,” says volunteer guide Ian McCleary – thanks to an ACT Heritage Grant last year. (The 2022 round has just opened.) “We’re in the business of trying to restore history, and keep the history of the fire services going,” Mr McCleary said. “It’s very nice that the Heritage Council recognised that it’s something of value to Canberra history… It would be a terrible thing to lose that history.” This is the second 1963 Mark III Thornycroft Nubian 6 x 6 large fire tender to have served at the airport. The Commonwealth Government bought the first for the airport in 1963; it crashed and rolled in the 1970s.
The replacement vehicle – one of a fleet of Commonwealth Department of Civil Aviation appliances that served NSW and the ACT from the 1960s – was permanently stationed at the airport from the mid-1970s until 1996. When it was retired, it was given to the Fire Brigade Historical Society of the ACT. The Thornycroft was “very, very noisy – but a very capable vehicle at the time,” Mr McCleary said. It is a 14-ton six-wheel drive, with a 6.6 litre Rolls Royce B81 petrol engine. Manned by a crew of five, it could pump 3,600 litres of water, and 18,000 litres of foam a minute. “It could throw foam quite a distance, for three or four minutes,” Mr McCleary remembered, before it had to be backed up with a water truck. “Hopefully, in that time, you had any fire out.” Those pumps came in handy in 1977, when a Boeing 747B Alitalia jet was forced to land in Canberra after it hit some birds. The engine caught fire, and the gearbox casing was burnt through. “Molten metal dripped from the engine as the fire was brought under control,” the Canberra Times reported. Fortunately, nobody was harmed. Firemen used carbon-dioxide extinguishers to put out the blaze. (continued page 18)
Dad isn’t ready for aged care
Dad was lonely in the house by himself. The neighbors had all moved. He was still independent but needed a little domestic help.
1 Bedroom Serviced Apartments from $369,000
Then we found The Grange Deakin Serviced Apartments, just 300m from Deakin shops. After a little encouragement Dad moved in and within days he couldn’t stop thanking me. Dad has his own apartment, he’s surrounded by company and regular social activities. The household chores are no longer a burden, the apartment is cleaned and the linen changed weekly. Plus, the pressure of the building maintenance is gone. Dad’s now out doing things he loves again. I know Dad gets home cooked meals, assistance with regular medication reminders and there is someone there 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. The Grange isn’t aged care but I know when the time comes, I can organise external home care support to help Dad stay independent longer. Now when we talk it’s without the worry and nagging. Dad couldn’t be happier.
Each apartment comes with: • a spacious living/dining area • a kitchenette including a fridge and microwave • master bedroom and a large ensuite • balcony or courtyard • individually controlled reverse cycle air conditioning • internal access to our Leisure Centre, Murray House.

Fire Brigade Museum restores historic engine
(from page 16) “It was too high for us to get to any of the engines or the doors,” Mr McCleary remembered. “Nothing of that size had ever landed in Canberra before. “But thankfully, there weren’t too many exciting incidents. And that’s what you dream of: that you go to work, and you come home, and there’s been nobody hurt.” Operating the fire tender’s pumps was a complicated eight-step process. “It required quite a lot of skills maintenance just to keep your hand in, knowing which levers [to pull], and getting your sequences right,” he said. One senior firefighter would spend 15 minutes every day running the truck out of the fire station and positioning it as though they were attacking a plane fire. If Mr McCleary was rostered on as a driver, he would sit in the truck and go through the
motions of what levers to push in what sequence. The Thornycroft Mark III and its “little brother”, the Mark I, were “seriously thirsty”, Mr McCleary reminisced. In 1978, “the days when petrol was cheap”, he drove the Mark I to Sydney; he filled up before he left, then had to stop for petrol again at Goulburn and Camden before he reached Sydney airport. Restoration work began two years ago. “We’ve had a battle in finding parts for it,” Mr McCleary said. They had to go to England to find butterfly valves for the carburettor, and the braking system required some innovative searching. The inside has been repainted; now, he said: “It’s nice to have it to a point where we can get it painted.” Normally, the FBHS repaints fire trucks at the museum, but the Thornycroft is too big to paint in
the yard without impacting the local community, Mr McCleary said. It will go to a specialist in Fyshwick who can “handle painting something this size” in an enclosed environment. Once the truck has been repainted, it will go on display. “It’d be very nice to see it back in its glory, and able to be shown somewhere,” he said. But where it will be stored has yet to be resolved. It could be parked at a fire station, or someone might have a big shed the engine could be parked in. “When you put the effort and energy into restoring them, you don’t like to see them fall apart again simply because you can’t get it under storage,” Mr McCleary said. The Thornycroft is one of many treasures of the Canberra Fire Brigade Museum’s collection, housed in the former Forrest Fire Station, built in 1939. There are historic fire
engines, some from the 1920s and 1930s; the call centre’s elaborate networks of fire alarms; and relics from the 2003 fires, including melted metal from the Phillip fire truck caught in the firestorm. The Museum, in Empire Circuit, Forrest, is open every Saturday from 10am to 2pm. The restoration of the Thornycroft has been made possible by the ACT Heritage Grants, which identify, conserve, and celebrate Canberra’s history and heritage, said Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Heritage. This year’s round will provide $350,850 for local community projects. Ms Vassarotti hopes to see applications that document and record the histories of Canberra’s women, First Nation, multicultural, disability, and LGBTQIA+ communities. pplications close on 29 April. - Nick Fuller
Appeal raises $550,000
76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax 18
canberraweekly.com.au
Canberrans should be giving themselves a round of applause because this year’s annual Canberra Day Appeal raised over $550,000, according to CEO of Hands Across Canberra, Peter Gordon. Mr Gordon says he’s proud that so many Canberrans got behind the campaign once again and donated to their local community during these uncertain times. Because there are many worthy causes in need of support right now elsewhere in Australia and globally, he says it’s heartening to see Canberrans helping vulnerable members of the local community. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the result; $550,000 will go a long way to support the many local organisations that work with the most vulnerable people in our community. “The result shows that even
during uncertain times when there are a great number of extremely worthy causes, such as floods and war, Canberrans also want to help those in our own backyard. “We may have fallen short of our target, but knowing that our generous community is supporting vulnerable people elsewhere in the country, and the world, whilst also giving where they live, is the best outcome we could hope for.” Mr Gordon says he thanks everyone in the Canberra community – individuals, businesses, and government – who supported this year’s appeal. “Our local charities and community organisations will get immediate benefit from this appeal. The difference these funds will make is huge and will allow our local charities to continue servicing the community.” - Abbey Halter

RSPCA ACT to relocate
After years of waiting, RSPCA ACT last week announced it will relocate to a new purpose-built facility in Pialligo. Now more than 50 years old, the Weston facility has done its best to accommodate RSPCA ACT employees, volunteers, and rescued and surrendered animals since 1966. The new Pialligo site will include enclosed dog kennels and cattery facilities, and a purpose-built vet clinic, which means the RSPCA ACT will be better able to offer clinical services to the animals in their care and to low-income pet owners. ACT Minister for City Services Chris Steel said the ACT Government “made an election commitment to work with the RSPCA and find them a new facility, and we found a particular block in Pialligo which is well situated, zoned appropriately for
an animal care facility, and is near existing vet facilities”. While there has been some suggestion the site is inappropriate due to its proximity to the airport runway, Mr Steel was adamant the site is suitable. CEO of RSPCA ACT Michelle Roberston said she’s “busting” to do all the amazing things the animal welfare organisation has been holding off for years. “We’ve been on this site {Weston] for a long time, but we are not able to meet the current needs of the community ... and we can’t do the things we should be doing – educating the community, having spaces where children, students, the elderly, and everyone in the community can come and learn about the beauty of animals and how to be a responsible pet owner.”
sport Wighton stars as Raiders win thriller Jack Wighton starred in his 200th NRL match, leading the Raiders to a thrilling 24-19 win over Cronulla in front of 15,224 fans at GIO Stadium last Friday night, 11 March. Wighton scored the opening try as the Raiders dominated the first half, heading into the break leading 18-6. However, Canberra’s second half woes from 2021 resurfaced as Cronulla hit back with two quick tries, before a Matt Moylan field goal gave them a 19-18 lead with eight minutes to go. With the Raiders in range to level the scores with a field goal of their own, a gutsy decision from Wighton to run the ball on the last tackle led to Hudson Young charging over the line for the match winner, sending the crowd into a frenzy. GIVIT donation of the week: Garden and outdoor supplies Spending time outdoors is important for our mental health and general wellbeing. But for vulnerable Canberrans experiencing personal adversity including mental or physical illness, disability, or the pressures of financial hardship, it can be difficult to connect with the outdoors in a positive way. That’s why GIVIT is working with organisations across the ACT to bring some simple outdoor pleasure to those in need. One charity assisting families experiencing homelessness and economic hardship is requesting a semi-permanent gazebo, to provide protection from shade and rain for a children’s outdoor play area at their centre. Another organisation supporting those in the community who are frail, aged, and homeless or at risk of homelessness, is requesting donations of potting mix, pots, small gardening tools and plants or seedlings including herbs, veggies, and flowers to assist with the mental health and wellbeing of some of their vulnerable clients. Any pre-loved or unused gardening and outdoor items that Canberrans may have sitting idle in the shed or garage would spark some immediate joy for those doing it tough. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whats-needed, search Category/Keyword: ‘Garden and Outdoor’; Location: ‘ACT’. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Despite 90 per cent noticing the sheer amount of excess food packaging, and over half (54 per cent) looking for less packaging this Easter, just 5 per cent of Aussies consider the amount of packaging waste as a significant factor when buying Easter eggs. This Easter, it’s time to scrunch up and throw away our habit of eating with our eyes, with 49 per cent of respondents admitting that they are drawn to the biggest Easter egg box available. Only 22 per cent of Aussies declared separating out Easter egg packaging for recycling. Meanwhile, on any other day of the year, 62 per cent of us commit to sorting home recyclables. Sustainability expert at Monash Sustainable Development Institute, Jenni Downes says that “on special occasions like Easter, many Australians continue to be attracted to bigger packaging either consciously or unconsciously.” Here are her top tips for a more sustainable Easter in 2022: Reduce: Check the packaging weight vs product weight when selecting Easter chocolate (bigger

NPG director, Karen Quinlan AM, said new exhibition Shakespeare to Winehouse is a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to see 84 iconic British artworks in Australia.
NPG curator, Joanna Gilmour, said Shakespeare to Winehouse has a level of depth beneath the surface that will surprise and enlighten audiences.
Shakespeare to Winehouse a ‘once in a lifetime’ exhibition Artworks depicting some of Britain’s most influential figures of the past 500 years are now in Canberra as part of the National Portrait Gallery’s (NPG) new exhibition, Shakespeare to Winehouse. Denholm Samaras reports. As the name suggests, Shakespeare to Winehouse runs the gamut of British identity and culture, featuring contemporary icons like David Beckham, Kate Moss, and Amy Winehouse through to figures of yesteryear like Margaret Thatcher, Henry the Eighth, and William Shakespeare. The touring exhibition sees 84 of the National Portrait Gallery, London’s 200,000-piece permanent collection hit the road, many for the first time since they were acquired. It is a key selection from the world’s most extensive collection of portraiture. The rare opportunity to see them here in Canberra has eventuated due to the London gallery closing for three years in 2020 to undergo extensive essential refurbishments, the largest redevelopment of the building since it opened to the public in 1896. “We’re calling it a once in a lifetime opportunity, because a lot of these works probably
won’t travel again,” NPG director, Karen Quinlan AM said. “When the refurbishment of the National Portrait Gallery, London is completed, a lot of these works form a part of the permanent hang, and they’ll go back on display.” The portraits that comprise Shakespeare to Winehouse have been divided up and presented thematically, rather than chronologically as they are back home, through six sections – Power, Love and Loss, Fame, Innovation, Identity, and Self. “That’s very interesting, I think, for the public, because if you’re exploring themes like power … you start to see people like Queen Elizabeth I and Anna Wintour,” Quinlan said. “We go from the 16th century through to the 21st century … We have them side by side regardless of the age of the work, but with that common theme, which is the genre of portraiture how that binds people.” Established in 1856, the first
work the National Portrait Gallery, London collected was the portrait of William Shakespeare produced by John Taylor circa 1600-1610, on display for this exhibition. “It’s great to see them on our walls, I don’t think we’ve ever had works of this age here,” Quinlan said. NPG curator, Joanna Gilmour, told Canberra Weekly she was “delighted” to open the exhibition after a great deal of work behind the scenes in preparation. “For us to have worked with our colleagues in London to get this thing halfway across the world in the middle of a pandemic is really extraordinary, so we’re all feeling really uplifted,” she said. To prepare for the exhibition, Gilmour was tasked with learning about all the portraits and figuring out how they could best be presented to Australian audiences. The selection and grouping of the works were done by National Portrait Gallery, London curators. “We are able to determine
design, pairings of different works, and the positionings of works, so my job comes in really helping lay the space out … to help people make sense of what they’re seeing and tell the story.” While Shakespeare to Winehouse features household names that get people through the door, Gilmour said the exhibition has a level of depth beneath the surface that will surprise and enlighten audiences. “Yes, there’s images of very famous people, but there’s much more to it than that,” she said. “I see a beautiful encapsulation of 500 years of British art, so it’s a wonderful art history lesson, and it’s also just a fabulous collection of all sorts of different lives and human experiences. “You can relate to it on all sorts of levels.” Shakespeare to Winehouse, Icons from the National Portrait Gallery, London is on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Parkes ACT until 17 July; portrait.gov.au canberraweekly.com.au

Luka Lesson bringing the ‘love’ to the National Museum A narrative hip-hop and spoken word musical performance straddling ancient and contemporary Athens from Greek-Australian poet Luka Lesson will premiere next month at the National Museum of Australia. Agapi & Other Kinds of Love sees Lesson draw on his proud heritage to search for the meanings of love in Ancient Greece. Inspired by Socrates’ original speech found in Plato’s The Symposium, Agapi begins with Socrates telling a banquet of friends everything he learned from a mysterious lover named: Diotima. “We don’t know a lot of about Diotima from history, aside from this really important mention,” Lesson told Canberra Weekly. The gods then take the audience on a journey – collapsing time and space to arrive in modern day Athens, where the two reincarnations of the ancient lovers, Sophia and Pablos, fall in love (again). The performance then takes audiences through
the seven kinds of love identified in Ancient Greece: Eros, Filia, Filoxenia, Philautia, Storgi, Pragma, and the ultimate, Agapi. “I wanted to write something that took the audience on a journey of experiencing how in life these types of love exist for us,” Lesson said. “I felt like at this time of history, we need more love and more of a vocabulary around the types of love and what it can do for us in the modern world.” Musical compositions are written by James Humberstone from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with contributions from musicians Greta Kelly, Ella Fence and Avishai Barnatan. Humberstone has composed a “colossal” soundscape. It’s been designed to be performed live by Kelly and Fence, with the two musicians looping and triggering samples to create a deep, rich musical backing. Musically the project shifts between cinematic

ancient Greece, but actual physical objects of ancient Greece,” he said.
“Some of these artefacts may have felt the vibrations of a poet’s voice in those eras, and they’ll feel that again.” Having long felt connected to his Greek heritage, Lesson has seen that bond manifest differently throughout his life. “I hated poetry at school never resonated, but hip-hop and rap did,” he said. “When I was in high school, if a teacher had said to me there are heaps of amazing poets from ancient Greece in your culture who you can connect with it might have been different. “I’ve always been in love with the history of humans and human behaviour, so it’s kind of inevitable my love for hip-hop would eventually clash with ancient Greece,” he said, “and this is one of those projects that does that.” Growing up in Brisbane with two parents from
different parts of Greece, he felt “very connected” to his heritage throughout his childhood but had a yearning to learn more. “I felt like something was missing in a sense, within the culture in Australia, because many migrant communities tend to create a time capsule of a culture,” he said. “It was isolated from the ways Greece as moved on because culture is fluid. “I felt like in Brisbane, that not that it was bad, but that it wasn’t all that I needed to know.” Lesson eventually travelled to Greece as an artist, where he collaborated with musicians and “connected with my Greekness on my own terms”. It was there he found low bap, the sub-genre of Greek hip-hop “all about poetry and storytelling” with a strong underground anarchist following, associated with Athens’ Exarcheia neighbourhood. “I think that was really important,” he said. “I got to learn about this whole other side of what being Greek means, doesn’t have to mean smashing plates and eating baklava, it’s that but it’s so much more than that.” - Denholm Samaras Agapi & Other Kinds of Love will be performed by Luka Lesson at the National Museum of Australia, 27-29 April 8pm; nma.gov.au

As incoming resident artist, Goudie is looking forward to sharing practices, ideas and motivations, hoping it will “break some of the complete isolation I feel”. “This residency will give me access to other people with shared aspirations and creativity, expanding my experiences and practice beyond where I usually have focused. “It will be interesting to learn more about the other participants and share what I can to support others that are emerging.” These Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists will be joined by multidisciplinary artist, poet, performer and producer, Jacqui Malins, and emerging visual artist and teacher, Yamile Tafur, who will be delving into their community arts and

The precinct will join the existing institutions within the National Triangle – including the Tent Embassy, National Library of Australia, Questacon, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, and the High Court of Australia. AIATSIS Council chairperson, Jodie Sizer, said that for these reasons the winning design must speak to multiple audiences. “It must suit its location, and reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ aspirations, achievements and deep connection to Country,” Sizer said. For Stage 1 of this competition, AIATSIS is inviting eligible Australian design professionals to provide an expression of interest (EOI) to participate further in the Ngurra Cultural Precinct architectural design competition. Following an assessment of the experience and eligibility of those Australian architectural firms that submit EOIs, four will be invited to participate in Stage 2, the competitive design process.
AIATSIS CEO Craig Ritchie said there is currently no facility in Australia that provides and delivers the functions in a consolidated and centralised form such as those proposed of the Ngurra Cultural Precinct. “While respectful of the past, a central goal of the Ngurra Cultural Precinct is to look forward, and to engage with and help shape how we see both our history and our future as a nation,” Ritchie said. National Museum lead Indigenous curator and guest curator on Connection, Margo Ngawa Neale, said the Museum is renowned globally for exploring and sharing First Peoples’ stories. “There can be no better way to bring our songlines stories alive than through the aweinspiring use of sound and light animations of Connection,” she said. The walk-through experience will immerse visitors in the spiritual connections between land, water, and sky through a vibrant and multi-sensory symphony of sound, light and colour. The artistic line-up of more than 300 images from some 100 artists featured in Connection represents the diversity of Australia’s First Peoples showcasing images from remote, rural and urban areas working in traditional and contemporary art forms across the country. Now showing Quo Vadis, Aida? (M) In 1995, Bosnia, Aida (Jasna Đuričic’) translates a meeting between the mayor of smalltown Srebrenica, and Colonel Karremans (Johan Heldenbergh) representing the UN. Regardless, the Serbian army take over the town, forcing tens of thousands of citizens to an under-resourced UN camp. With little help from UN New York headquarters, the Serbian army led by Ratko Mladic’ (Boris Isakovic’) moves towards the overcrowded camp … Aida wears multiple hats to showcase both the personal devastation of the Serbian invasion and the multiple perspectives throughout the fallout. Aida is at the forefront of conversations between significant players, privy
to strategic machinations, political pressures, institutional ineptitude, and international apathy. Colonel Karremans seems sympathetic as he struggles with the pressures of caring for the thousands of refugees both within and outside the camp with no help from the UN. This sympathy wanes, however, when Karremans unbelievably lets the wolf into the hen’s house. Aida fights uphill to keep her family safe while witnessing the danger building up on all sides. Against all hope with no help, Aida sees the writing on the wall but doesn’t give up. Aida’s frustration, fear and rage are empathetic, which is horrifying as it is representative of an entire people. Verdict: An unbelievable story that serves to set a record straight. Not an easy watch, but an important one, if only to show the devastation of war and the continued legacy of injustice. 4.5 stars. Viewed at Palace Electric. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

Fashion heroes At the world premiere of 2022’s The Batman, Zoe Kravitz incorporated her starring role as Catwoman into her signature “cool girl” wardrobe. Marisa Tomei attended the same premiere in a gold gown referencing the ‘Time Stone,’ a wink to Marvel fans everywhere. The Aunt May actress kept her hair in loose waves, and wore no accessories, letting the gown, courtesy of Zuhair Murad, serve as the main event.
Zendaya attended the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere dressed in an ode to on and offscreen boyfriend, Tom Holland’s webslinging hero. The custom Valentino gown was complemented by the starlet’s long braids, and a mysterious lace mask that disappeared towards the end of the evening.

Homemade citrus garlands WITH HOME EDITOR, ABBEY HALTER
What you’ll need
With autumn in the air, it’s that time once again to revamp your home to match the season. The warmth of orange is a classic way to embrace the energy of falling leaves and temperatures. A perfectly delightful way to incorporate this cosy ambience into your space is by making aromatic citrus garlands to hang around your home. Canberra Weekly created our own garlands, and here are the bewitchingly charming results.
Citrus of your choice; we chose lemons, limes, grapefruit, and oranges A dehydrator (or oven, but we’re told that doesn’t work as well)
1
String or twine Sewing needle Scissors
Gather your citrus of choice.
2 Use a mandolin to slice your citrus to roughly 1/2 cm thick.
Oranges: Joy, happiness, purification, luck, and money. Lemon: Longevity, happiness, refreshment, rejuvenation, purification, and money.
3
Lime: Protection and purification. Here are a few of the specific properties for each type of citrus CW used in our garlands:
Grapefruit: Purification.
Turn your dehydrator to 60oC and leave for roughly 5 hours (note: the slices at the bottom dry faster than the top ones). Rotate and flip as necessary during the 5 hours.
Jar or container
Properties and benefits Not only do they make your home smell delicious, but incorporating different citrus into your home décor is said to bring added benefits, including cleansing, cleaning, and purifying your space.
Steps
4
Place them in your dehydrator, making sure none are touching.
5 Leave to dry in your jar or container (but don’t leave them uncovered overnight, they will gain back moisture – we learnt the hard way).
6 Once dry, use a needle to thread your string through the citrus slices. Decorate your home as desired with your gorgeous citrus garlands. canberraweekly.com.au

CW test run: Community Toolbox Canberra Canberra Weekly recently embarked on a DIY journey to make homemade citrus garlands. Our main obstacle was sourcing a dehydrator;
The dehydrator Canberra Weekly borrowed from Community Toolbox Canberra worked like an absolute treat. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
it was one of those situations where you needed to use something once and were unlikely to use it again. Purchasing a dehydrator for just one use would not only be financially foolish, but not very eco-friendly either. As we brainstormed possible solutions, a lightbulb switched on above our editor – she recalled seeing a website called the Community Toolbox Canberra where members can borrow items they need and return them after use. After a quick google search, we were in luck … they had dehydrators available. A few phone calls and days later, I ventured to Watson to meet the lovely Rebecca and pick up our glorious dehydrator. Volunteerled, the Community Toolbox is packed to the brim with all kinds of weird and wonderful items. Need an ice-cream machine? They have one. Need pet clippers? Check. Impact drill? Yep! They even have a pretty-inpink kayak. The name is deceptive; there’s definitely more than just tools at the toolbox. After chatting with Rebecca and choosing
from the five available dehydrators, I was on my way back to the office. Ready to begin our citrus garland making adventure, we quickly realised no one at CW had experience using a dehydrator. Fortunately, our photographer became the knight in shining armour we never knew we needed. The loan period of an item at the Community Toolbox is generally two weeks, but they’re pretty flexible on timing. I’ll be returning it during their opening hours of 10am-1pm on Saturdays. The experience of borrowing from the Community Toolbox was fantastic. It felt like what my grandparents would describe as a ‘friendly neighbourhood’ – you could borrow a drill from Bob next door, a cake tin from Mary on the other side, and John’s mower from across the street. I think it’s a great initiative that feels innately Canberran, and I’m eying off their underwater skateboard for my next Community Toolbox escapade. - Abbey Halter

ACT Government cuts residential stamp duty again, but is it enough? Canberra homebuyers purchasing off-the-plan will be getting a leg-up from the ACT Government as residential stamp duty is set to be cut once again. The further support will come in the form of up to $15,720 of savings for off-the-plan purchases up to $600,000. This is an expansion of the scheme introduced by the government last year and the new duty-free threshold will take effect from 1 April. Maximum property value will be increasing from $500,000 to $600,000 and an ACT Government
spokesperson said this is to ensure the “concession continues to support housing purchases by owner occupiers at the entry level of the market.” Master Builders ACT (MBA) welcomed the cut in stamp duty but are calling for additional measures to meet the housing demand in Canberra. MBA CEO Michael Hopkins said “while we are pleased that the ACT Government has extended stamp duty cuts for off-the-plan unit sales, much more needs to be done to create more affordable housing solutions”.
“To provide equity across the new residential market, stamp duty should be cut for all residential purchasers, including vacant land for detached houses. Supply of vacant residential land for detached housing has been severely constrained in the ACT leading to significant price increases. “Providing an adequate supply of affordable land for detached housing should be a priority of government and cutting stamp duty would provide immediate relief for purchases.”
JWLand to develop Belconnen Central Another prime block of land has been purchased by JWLand, awaiting a multi-use precinct to be built in central Belconnen. Purchased from the ACT Government Suburban Land Agency (SLA), the 7,125sqm site named Belconnen Central was purchased on Wednesday 9 March for $20.5 million. Michael Prendergast, National Head of Development for JWLand said “the acquisition of another landmark site strengthens JWLand’s commitment to Canberra and the evolving transformation of the Belconnen Town Centre”. “Our strength resides in delivering large scale, world class, mixed-use precincts. We are thrilled to build on the success of Campbell5, Founders Land, and Northbourne Village.” The site is bound by Swanston, Chandler, and Cohen Streets, and will be able to accommodate
more than 500 apartments along with additional supporting commercial and retail uses. JWLand is required to retain the amount of public parking currently on the site, presenting an opportunity for a “vibrant new location” within the town centre. “The acquisition of this site represents a fantastic opportunity for JWLand to create a sustainable mixed-use precinct in one of Canberra’s most sought-after town centres,” Mr Prendergast said. “Given its proximity to the city, University of Canberra, and diversity of employment opportunities, the area has matured and commands significant interest as a desirable place to live.” The Belconnen Town Centre is a sought-after location, and the quality and amenity of the area is expected to improve over the next decade as more land is released.
Belconnen Town Centre will be home to JWLand’s new Belconnen Central development, a multi-use precinct comprised of over 500 apartments, plus commercial services and retailers. iStock image.
“Over the coming months we will begin working with our stakeholders to design a precinct that will complement the characteristics of this area,” Mr Prendergast said. The site is located on Block 17 Section 152 Belconnen.
House prices hit 20-year high, but other dwellings decline in Canberra Another quarter, another national house price record broken – but prices for some Canberra properties, such as flats, have declined. The latest Real Estate Institute of Australia’s (REIA) Real Estate Market Facts reports house prices have increased at the highest rate they’ve seen in two decades. The report found a rise of 25.1 per cent during the 12 months ending December 2021. REIA President, Hayden Groves, said the weighted average median house price for all eight capital cities in the December quarter increased to $1,021,710. 50
canberraweekly.com.au
An annual increase higher than 20 per cent hasn’t occurred in almost 20 years, since June 2002, Mr Groves said. “The weighted average median price for other dwellings, such as villas and flats, for the eight capital cities increased to $658,577, a quarterly increase of 1.8 per cent,” he said. “Over the quarter, the median price for other dwellings increased in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Hobart but declined in Adelaide, Canberra, and Darwin. The weighted average capital city median price
for other dwellings saw a lower increase than houses, but still a rise nonetheless, at 1.5 per cent in the 12 months to the December quarter, he said. “Over the December quarter, the weighted average median rent for three-bedroom houses in the eight capital cities increased to $471 per week, a quarterly increase of 1.5 per cent,” he said. Mr Groves is confident that property investment is still secure, with regional activity remaining strong and property still seeming to be a ‘go to’ investment destination as global uncertainty continues to grow.

Well, at 28 Depot Beach Road it’s not a dream – it’s reality. Nestled in an exclusive and sought-after coastal hamlet right in the heart of the Murramarang National Park, this stunning seaside home boasts magnificent beaches, pristine forests, and an abundance of wildlife at your doorstep. Agent Aristotle Stavros says the tranquil and unspoilt location has been voted number eight on a list of Australia’s top 10 beaches. “The home was designed by award-winning architect Peter Willett and is perfectly positioned on the point to take in breathtaking 180-degree ocean views. Cleverly designed with louvered windows and a mix of sliding and French doors, the natural airflow cools the home in summer and a wood fire heater for the cooler months adds to the atmosphere,” says Mr Stavros. “The main living spaces on the second floor certainly have the ‘wow factor’. Two large wooden decks offer outstanding ocean
views and are the perfect places to relax or entertain and catch the cool sea breezes. The open plan main living areas with floor-to-ceiling windows allow the space to flood with natural light and make you feel part of the environment amongst the beautiful gum-tree canopy.” With extra features such as a lockable garage, ample space to park a boat or caravan, stunning warm timber floors throughout, stone kitchen benches, a private outdoor shower, large laundry tub, and a fabulous sauna, this home really is the epitome of modern, sophisticated, beach living.

The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. Tuggeranong Southpoint is only five minutes’ drive away for more substantial shopping.
Room to move Nobody wants to downsize to something poky or impractical. Marigal Gardens offers generous and practical floorplans that are designed for relaxed and comfortable living. And as a resident’s needs change, their home can change too. No matter what the budget, or lifestyle, there are plenty of options to suit. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. Making the most of every day, your way Marigal Gardens is a thriving community with wonderful facilities and a lifeaffirming vibe that residents love. There are organised activities for all tastes should you choose to pursue a long-held passion or try something new. For more unstructured pleasures, catch up for a coffee, indulge in a gym workout or enjoy a relaxing sundowner at the bar. For the young at heart there is Kambah Adventure Playground right next door.
Feeling safe and secure Safety and security are frequently top priorities for buyers when it comes to choosing their new home. With staff onsite 24/7, help or assistance is never far away. And should travel beckon, our team and neighbours make sure a home is well looked after, so residents can take off with confidence. While buyers focus on lots of different reasons when making their decision, most come to a similar conclusion when they have finally settled in. Gay, one of our residents sums it up neatly: “I wish I’d made the move sooner.” For more information, please visit marigalgardens.com.au

Dick Smith will find more time to develop his creativity and will seek inspiration through his environment and neighbourhood. This will stimulate new ideas and plans that could lead to new territory and something exciting for him. To anchor his plans, a trusted strategy over the coming weeks and months is to be realistic and practical, as otherwise prevailing influences will lead to idealism.

Contemplate the realities and logistics of your situation, as you may be tempted to be idealistic. The alignment of planets in Pisces will bring personal matters to a head, so get set for a fresh chapter in a relationship. avoid over-reacting to events; it’s far better to research your options first.
a fresh chapter is beginning at home. This will include the necessity or opportunity to share space slightly differently or to work a little bit harder to make domestic life happier. you may be surprised by news from the past or by a get-together. a change of schedule will require you to adjust.
friday’s Virgo full moon suggests you’re ready for something new, especially in your personal life and, for some mid-september Virgos, in your daily routine. you may need to attend to logistics and adapt to a fresh environment or schedule. expect news from someone you must collaborate or share duties with.
friday’s full moon brings the chance to reinvent your approach to life. your plans will become easier to implement as you progress, but you must enlist the help of an expert if needed. developments will surprise you. avoid arguments with people you love and consider the benefits of close relationships.

However, you may feel restless and distracted. you’ll avoid feeling edgy by engaging in purposeful activities and, when you do, you could excel.
friday’s full moon will bring decisions your way. you may be surprised by a change of circumstance that requires you to be better organised. good communication skills will be necessary. news will be surprising but will precede a fresh opportunity. If, however, news is disruptive, ensure you research your options.
friday’s full moon brings a change in your daily or health routine. you’ll need to rely on your careful judgement and take into account other people’s beliefs and feelings, and this could add to a sense of disruption. luckily, news midweek will provide you with direction at work or regarding health.
friday’s full moon will spotlight what you must change in your life. If you’re already aware that change is on way, you’ll receive fresh and helpful information. a financial commitment may be in your interest, but you must check the fine print. be strong, practical and resourceful to combat disruptions.

friday’s full moon signals the start of a fresh cycle in your personal life, so take the initiative and make things happen! avoid feeling pressured to get everything absolutely perfect; take things one step at a time. unusual or out-of-the-ordinary circumstances will ask that you extend your skill sets and potentially enter new territory.
If you’ve been seeing life through rose-coloured glasses, developments may shatter some of your illusions. However, you’ll appreciate being able to turn a corner financially. a meeting or the chance to do something different will be exciting. Plan ahead if some developments are tiring or require extra focus.
friday’s full moon suggests a fresh approach to family and interpersonal dynamics will be fruitful. It’s a good time to revitalise your personal life, but you must avoid gambling with your future. a change of pace or a surprise will delight, even if it tests your mettle. avoid impulsiveness.
friday’s full moon will provide insight into your finances and a relationship. Venus in aquarius will motivate you to be more loving and outgoing. However, everyone has their own mindset, and they won’t always agree with you. avoid conflict and look for ways to find common ground where possible.

The Duke (M) is the true story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, who stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge – Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage. In cinemas 31 March. CW has 10 x The Duke in-season double passes to be won.
ITALY – GREVE IN CHIANTI There is no place like Italy for me. This town in the Chianti region is beautiful in its simplicity. The cafés , food and people make it really special. They also make the best coffee.

My favourite meal. I don’t care whether it’s veal, pork or chicken. I could eat this every night but I must say, my favourite place to have it is in the old town in Innsbruck, Austria.

GLOBAL HAIR & MAKEUP What I love about GHMU is that I get to provide hair and makeup artists from all over the world with opportunities they may not normally have. They get to join me on tour and it’s amazing.
RODIAL GLOW DROPS I LOVE this product! This is how I make my red carpet clients and brides glow. It’s so light and natural, which for me is really important.
TRAVEL Even though I get air sick, I could live out of a suitcase. Being able to travel is such a gift and something I’ve been doing since I was a Contiki Tour Guide in the 1980s.
