contents From the editor In the busy-ness of life, sometimes it’s wise to take time out to stop doing and to just be. After all, we’re human beings, not human doings, as my granddad was fond of saying, especially post retirement. Following a productive day around the house on Saturday thanks largely to the cold, rainy weather luring me indoors, I took the opportunity to tear up my ‘to do’ list on Sunday (after my early morning trip to the farmers’ market, of course, which is a pleasure, not a chore). It was such a welcome relief to not have to go anywhere or do anything. I finished reading an excellent novel and binge-watching Bridgerton, gazed at clouds while sunning myself on the deck, sipped copious cups of herbal tea, and ate meals prepared the day before. A perfect, lazy, trackie-dacks Sunday. Of course, not everyone can take “me time” at a whim (it was a rare treat indeed when my now adult offspring were little). But for me, the benefits were palpable. I could feel my nervous system relaxing, my mind slowing, my contentment increasing. Priceless. Reasons to be grateful this past week include hot chai tea, homegrown zucchini soup, regular wheelie bin collections, enjoying Mother and Son live at the Q, the IPA and Canberra Business Chamber federal budget breakfast at Parliament House, and a lazy Sunday. Take care,

news Businesses bought half of all new zero-emission vehicles purchased in the ACT last year, and many more are thinking of buying electric vehicles (EVs) for their fleet. To help them, the ACT Government has set up a free advisory service. “We’re at the start of the electric vehicle revolution,” said Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction. “We know people have got lots of questions. There’s a lot of myths out there about EVs, and this program makes it as simple as possible for businesses that want to be involved to make this transition.” The government team will talk to a business or community organisation about what EVs are available, what subsidies are available from the ACT Government (such as free registration or zero stamp duty), charging infrastructure, and the organisation’s needs, and help them develop a business case. Transport emissions make up more than 60 per cent of Canberra’s greenhouse gas emissions, Mr Rattenbury stated. But transitioning to a zero-emission fleet was both good for the planet and good business sense, he argued. “A lot of small businesses have had a difficult time through COVID – and so we’re hoping that we can help them make this transition to help the city and help their bottom line.”

Annette Braagaard, the Danish founder of local business Nordic Blinds, owns two EVs, with a third on the way. They travel around Canberra, and to Sydney and the coast – and only need to charge once in Sydney. Her business saves between $7,000 and $9,000 for every 50,000 km they travelled. But, Ms Braagaard said: “It wasn’t so much about saving money on petrol; it was more about saving the environment.” She and her husband switched to EVs because they were concerned their driving contributed to climate change. Brooke Clinton, founder and manager of Capital Scraps Composting, says using an electric van was “a no-brainer”. “Our business is all about climate action.” They collect food waste from households and other places. “It wouldn’t make sense for us to be cutting emissions in one activity and then putting out emissions through our transport options.” They began with an electric trike, which they use as the mainstay of their business, then bought the van. Mr Rattenbury said there was a general misapprehension that EV owners needed to spend a lot of money on charging infrastructure. But many owners simply have a bypass charger

they plug in the wall; the EV charges overnight. The ACT Government will also roll out 50 electric chargers across Canberra soon. Many Canberra organisations and businesses had fleets, and the government was happy to talk to them – whether they had 10 vehicles or only one. “There’s really no limit from the program’s point of view,” Mr Rattenbury said. The government has already had 30 enquiries, while some organisations signed up before the launch. - Nick Fuller

E-scooters to connect Belconnen and Civic Canberrans can now ride e-scooters directly from Belconnen to Civic and back. The two e-scooter shared zones have been connected over Bruce Ridge, using the Belconnen Bikeway, announced Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, this week. Many e-scooter riders had tried to travel between the two zones, even though there was no link, vehicle providers discovered; a virtual ‘geofence’ blocked their way. “The government will now provide a safe, accessible connection that keeps the scooters off major arterial roads, and ensures they’re on a safe shared path with cyclists,” Mr Steel said. The e-scooter scheme has also expanded to Bruce, providing access to the CIT, Calvary Hospital and GIO Stadium, he announced. However, the hospital will be a slow zone, as will the stadium (during major events), where e-scooters cannot go above 15 km/h, while retirement villages and schools would be no-go zones. 8

canberraweekly.com.au

Currently, there are 1,500 e-scooters in Canberra as part of the shared mobility scheme; the fleet will expand to 1,900. The number of e-scooters will increase by 400 – 200 each in Belconnen and Civic – “to make sure they don’t all migrate to the city,” Mr Steel said. Large batches of scooters will be available at 18 key destination points in Belconnen. By the end of the year, the e-scooter shared scheme would be rolled out to the rest of Canberra, starting with Woden and Gungahlin, and the number of e-scooters will further increase, Mr Steel said. “Shared e-scooters are proving to be great for short trips, as well as longer commutes when combined with public transport.” They would also be “a new form of mobility” during the disruption caused by the light rail expansion to Woden, he suggested. The government will keep the pilot model’s charge of $1 per e-scooter per day, which covers the administrative costs of the scheme and minor

infrastructure improvements. Last month, the ACT Government passed laws requiring e-scooter riders to control their device at all times and ride responsibly. This week, the Legislative Assembly introduced legislation to introduce drink driving laws for road-related areas, including footpaths and shared paths, to prohibit people riding e-scooters or bikes while intoxicated. “I have personally seen, unfortunately, a number of people using the e-scooters outside nightclubs on a Friday night or Saturday night, drinking with their friends, two people on the scooter at once, no helmet, under the influence of drugs,” Mr Steel said. “That’s why we’re tightening up the legislation to prohibit those types of activities off-road on footpaths and sidewalks, but also working with e-scooter providers on improvements to the geofencing, so that we can stop that sort of antisocial behaviour around particular key hotspots in the City.” - Nick Fuller

Stage 2 of the tram should be canned Firstly, a big thank you to the ACT Veterans Rugby club, the Pacific Barbarians and their families (especially player of the tournament “the Honourable Boof”) for raising over $8,000 last Saturday towards the Tongan Tsunami/Volcano Relief fund. Also a big tick for Federal Opposition leader Anthony Albanese for highlighting the need to do more to help our aged sector, but a big minus for his bizarre comment about the Solomons choosing to back China over Australia because we had not done enough on climate change (I don’t think that’s the reason, Albo, as China has 2,990 coal-fired power stations compared to our 20 and is building another 245 last count). The local news of the week is the strange decision of the NCA to approve the ACT Government’s

plan to destroy Capital Hill and cause chaos for the next four years in Civic by moving over 6,000 tonnes of soil from Capital Hill to build the tram line to the lake and then over the lake to Woden, cutting down all the lovely 100-year-old trees along Commonwealth Avenue in the process. (I thought the Greens were meant to be into trees.) I think this is madness. How many Civic businesses will be destroyed over the next four years and how much will this all cost? Stage 2A alone is due to cost well over $2 billion. Trams are an old 19th century inefficient form of transport. If it is to be built it should go a cheaper, better route, i.e., around London Circuit, out to Acton Peninsula, then across the lake and onto Woden. This route

saves any need to touch Capital Hill and saves the heritage trees along Canberra Avenue (i.e., prominent but now retired Canberra architect Jack Kershaw’s solution). The question must be asked: do we need it at all? No critical economic cost benefit study seems to have been done and the Barr ACT Labor is just doing it to appease Shane Rattenbury and the Greens. No need for that Andrew, they will never vote Liberal. The tram is 15 minutes slower than the current bus service (30 minutes as opposed to the 15-minute bus trip at present) and 10 times more expensive than an electric bus service. The thousands of tonnes of concrete and the steel rails needed to construct the project will cause a significant amount of extra greenhouse gas

emissions in their own right. I have talked to many people in Woden, Weston Creek and Tuggeranong and no one wants the tram. Many would prefer the money to be spent on hospitals. Where are the Canberra Liberals in all this? I’d suggest to them their two local Woden reps should run a survey of Woden/ Weston residents and see what they think. It might be prudent to also ask, when telling people the cost of the project, what they wanted the money spent on if the tram did not go ahead. Hospitality sector welcomes ACT liquor licence fee waivers Hospitality businesses in the ACT do not have to pay their liquor licenses for three months until the end of June. The ACT Government announced in the recent 2021–22 Budget Review that it would extend the reduction in liquor licence fees from 1 April to 30 June, and increase the reduction from half to all the licence fee, at a cost of $650,000. The full waiver applies to nightclub, restaurant and café, bar, general, catering special and club liquor licences. The Australian Hospitality Association ACT Branch (AHA ACT) welcomed the decision, said general manager Anthony Brierley. Mr Brierley said the AHA ACT earlier advised the ACT Government that licensed hospitality venues were required to pay half of their liquor license fees for the three-month lockdown period last year when their businesses were closed. “We felt that this arrangement was manifestly unfair, and the ACT Government gave our concerns a fair hearing. Last week’s announcement remedies this inequity.” Tara Cheyne, ACT Minister for Business and Better Regulation, said the waiver could save bars $750 and nightclubs $4,500. Mr Brierley said: “This temporary and targeted tax reduction by the ACT Government will allow hospitality operators to keep more money in their businesses as they recover from COVID, helping them to employ more staff, pay down debt, and re-invest in our local hospitality ecosystem.” However, he said, the AHA ACT and its members were disappointed that the Commonwealth Government did not follow the ACT Government’s lead in its federal budget last week,

and provide direct and targeted support for the hospitality industry. The AHA and hospitality and brewery organisations had lobbied Treasurer Josh Frydenberg to cut the draught beer excise by half, Drinks Digest reported, and it was widely reported that the budget would include that cut – disappointing the industry when it was left out. “Despite Senator Zed Seselja’s welcome support for our industry, the AHA’s calls for a modest reduction in draught beer excise were ignored by the Commonwealth Government,” Mr Brierley said. Last month, Senator Seselja, informed by Sky News that the government would cut the draught beer excise in the upcoming budget, responded: “Obviously I had no inside info other than what you’ve just told me, but I have had approaches from the clubs and the pubs. If we can see those hospitality workers, more of those in the workforce and Australians get a slightly cheaper schooner, well, fantastic.” The Australia Institute think tank argued that removing the beer excise would be ineffective and gender biased, benefitting men more than women, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. “It’s safe to say that our members feel let down by senior members of the Commonwealth Government,” Mr Brierley said. “The hidden beer tax – the fourth highest in the world – doesn’t pass the pub test. It was great that Senator Seselja and so many backbenchers across the country agreed with us. Unfortunately, senior members of the Government stuck in the Canberra bubble didn’t hear the same message from their constituents.” - Nick Fuller

Asha Clementi’s path to being named ACT Young Woman of the Year 2022 began when she was just a teenager. In many ways, the now 22-year-old is no different from her classmates in her last semester towards a Master of Diplomacy. After living in Canberra for eight years, she has dreams of working for an NGO overseas, “something in gender equality or education, that helps me do good in the world and pays for me to travel”. “I’ve always been interested in international relations and diplomacy,” Ms Clementi told Canberra Weekly.

“When I was 18, I went to the UN, as a representative of the National Council of Women, to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. “While I was there, I snuck into a security council meeting. It was an ARRIA meeting on Syrian relations. “I just sort of held up my pass and walked in very confidently. Not only did they let me in, but they also let in a couple of my friends, and I thought ‘Hold on. Where else could I get in, if I just asked?’” In 2018, Ms Clementi leveraged personal connections and made cold calls to embassies in the ACT to

successfully set up the first year of Girls Run the World. “As it turns out, a bunch of embassies will let you send young women to them for a day if you just ask.” The not-for-profit allows young women to shadow embassy staff members in discussing humanitarian issues, meeting ambassadors, and/or running social media for the mission. This year marks over 100 participants going through the program, forming connections in the field that will help them climb the ranks in their own careers. “We just finished our fourth iteration; 31 girls went to 13 different diplomatic missions,” reports Ms Clementi, despite parts of the program being postponed and partially run online due to pandemic restrictions. Over four years, Girls Run the World has received consistent support from the US and Finnish embassies and Canadian and British high commissions. Other participating embassies include Philippines, Thailand, Zambia, Solomon Islands, Malaysia, and Singapore. In June this year, Girls Run the World is taking on Argentina, partnered via the Argentinian Embassy with Fundación Global. “They’re helping us run the program in Buenos Aires,” smiled Ms Clementi. The attention received from winning ACT Young Woman of the Year for a program she runs “for fun outside of work and studying” continues to surprise. “Yeah, that’s crazy. It’s been a whirlwind, and I’m not used to

this many people knowing my name. However, the visibility this award brings us is fantastic.” Her success is a baton carried on from her mother, who Ms Clementi credits as her greatest inspiration. “The Girls Leadership Network is an organisation that I cofounded with my mum in 2017. It’s all about teaching young women leadership and how to network. It has been such a great backbone for me.” Ritu Clementi set up The Girls Leadership Network while Asha was in high school, after noticing a lack in leadership programs that were free for young women to join. She received a Great Ydeas grant from the YWCA. For two years, Asha has been a solo operator, but now leads a small team made up of Girls Run the World alumnae and talents found through an open application process run last year “in hopes that when I move away, Girls Run the World will keep going”. “I’m hoping to start up [Girls Run the World] wherever I move, and I would love for other people to take the idea and run with it too… start it up in their countries.” Her advice to other young girls hoping to break into maledominated fields is to make use of a network that has always been there. “Women support women and it’s been something we’ve seen time and time again. “Use the people around you and reach out to those you are inspired by. Ask them for coffee, ask for advice, and see where it takes you.” - Anja de Rozario

Local healthcare focus: Trusting that gut feeling

Dr Aditi Medhavy has just moved back to Canberra after studying medicine in Newcastle then moving to Sydney, where she did further training and worked in a couple of GP practices. “Sydney has a huge, diverse population, so you can gain an enormous amount of medical knowledge,” she says. “It was great to experience difficult cases and the busy city life for a few years, but my family is here and it’s nice to come back home. I really love Canberra! It’s a beautiful place, you only have to drive about five minutes before you’re among the trees.” Dr Medhavy is particularly interested in preventative health and health education, women’s health and children’s health. “My practice was shaped by working in the south west of Sydney,” she says. “It’s a socioeconomically disadvantaged area with a large refugee and migrant population, so you see a lot of patients with poor health literacy. There’s not a good understanding of preventative health and screening. For example a government package for bowel cancer screening might arrive in

the post, but that doesn’t mean the test will be taken. Patients might not see the need to test if they feel fine.” One case that influenced her approach was a new patient in his 40s. “I took the time to get an outline of his full history,” she says. During the conversation, the patient mentioned a few family members who had had bowel cancer, prompting Dr Medhavy to suggest early screening. “He was feeling fine, with no symptoms, and initially he did not see the need for a test. However, I felt his family history was a concern and that meant screening should start at 35 years of age instead of the usual 50. We talked some more and he finally agreed to do the test.” The test came back positive but luckily, because the abnormality had been caught early, it could simply be managed. It was not life-threatening and there was no need for major surgery. “That’s why I always take the time and talk about any issues properly during a first consultation rather than flying through it in five minutes,” she says. “If you don’t ask, you don’t know!” Another patient Dr Medhavy often thinks about came in for the first time with a chronic cough. “He didn’t have any other concerning symptoms, so normally you might want to just wait and watch. But that approach just didn’t feel right to me in his case - something about what he said about feeling pressure in his chest when he lay down just didn’t add up.” So Dr Medhavy referred the patient for a chest x-ray and that revealed a huge mass in his chest. An urgent CT scan confirmed

that it was a lymphoma. “This was a massive shock for him and he now faced a difficult journey, but thanks to detecting the issue and immediate treatment, he was OK. He was so appreciative that we had been proactive, with no wasted time.” “What I took away from that was that sometimes you just need to trust your gut. If you feel something is off, even if there are not a lot of symptoms, you should act. It’s better to be safe than sorry.” When she’s not at work, Dr Medhavy is likely to be found out for a run, walking her dog or decorating a cake, which she describes as her creative outlet. While her cakes are generally for family and friends’ birthdays, she was once asked to create a wedding cake. “I was honoured to be trusted with that,” she says. “My only brief was to make it pretty, which I did, and it seemed to be well-received!” Dr Medhavy is accepting new patients at Ochre Medical Centre Casey. Historic boats and faithful reconstructions – century-old hire-boats, 1930s speedboats, sailboats, and Thames pleasure boats – will take to the waters of Lake Burley Griffin this weekend, in the biennial Canberra Classic Boatfest, held for the first time since 2018. “I might be biased,” says organiser Robyn Thorne, “but old boats look really special. They’ve got a beauty and an elegance about them that I feel is lacking in some modern vessels at least. They have a style about them that is no longer available, unless you build one yourself or restore one.” The two-day event is hosted by the Traditional Boat Squadron of Australia, a Canberra-based group of boating enthusiasts. The festivities begin on Saturday with a 9am cruise from Lotus Bay, on the foreshore of the Canberra Yacht Club, to the central and eastern basins, mooring at Commonwealth Place. At lunchtime, the boats will be on public display at the Canberra Yacht Club (11am to 2pm), then will travel in the afternoon to Yarralumla (2pm). On Sunday morning, there will be a grand parade from Lotus Bay to Kingston Harbour (10am to noon). “We don’t go far from the shore, so people can see the boats at any point along the shoreline,” Ms Thorne said. Entry to the public is free. You can also view the boats at close quarters while they are tied up at the Yacht Club jetty or pulled

into the shingle at the beach. “People won’t be disappointed if they come and have a good look,” Ms Thorne said. “We’re all happy to chat to the public.” Each boat will have a placard detailing its history and construction, and how they were restored. John Kemister, a former conservator at the War Memorial, rescued his putt putt boat, KRMRN, from a pile of firewood and recreated it plank by plank. “He’s got a very good eye for authenticity, and the boat is absolutely as original as you could possibly make it,” Ms Thorne said. “The engine and all the fittings are spot-on.” Ms Thorne owns the oldest historical boat, Noosa, a former hire boat on the Noosa River, and which turns 100 years old sometime this decade. Ms Thorne has had her boat since the early 1980s, and says it took her many years to restore. A number of members have built their own boats based on old designs, Ms Thorne said. One boat, Elektra, is based on the design for a Thames slipper launch. Another is a recreation of a 1930s American-style speedboat, powered by a V8 Chevy engine. There will also be a New Zealand-built sailing boat. “It’s a bit of history, maritime history on a small scale. The boats look different, they sound different, they’re not like anything you’ll see down at Jervis Bay. Really, they’re a bit of the past, but operating in today’s waters.” - Nick Fuller

news V8 Supercar champion Emily Duggan rallies Girls on Track “For me, it’s really important that wherever I end up, I always extend the ladder down so it’s easier for the next generation of girls.” The first female driver to compete in the Super3 V8 Touring Car Series, Australian V8 Supercar driver Emily Duggan is an ambassador for the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) Girls on Track Australia program. Aiming to showcase women role models who have ‘dared to be different’, Girls on Track introduces schoolgirls to the world of STEM and motorsports, sparking the next generation’s interest in the maledominated industry. Girls on Track travelled to the ACT on 1 April to spread their message to local girls, and Emily sat down with CW to talk all things car racing, and the importance of female

representation. “All my friends couldn’t wait to turn 18 to drink, but for me? I couldn’t wait to turn 16 so I could get my licence,” Emily smiled. “I was never good at school, the only thing that I studied was the learner’s booklet – I literally memorised it back to front.” Girls on Track is an initiative close to Emily’s heart, and she said it’s a muchneeded program that she’s “thrilled” to be a part of. “It’s so great to show young girls there’s a community of women out there who are already in the motorsport industry, already trailblazing their way through and creating a path for the next generation to come through,” Emily said. “It’s really important to show girls there’s a supportive female community in motorsports, but then also showing

them how to get into it with our mentor program. So, we are really about giving our experiences out to them.” When asked what it’s like to be a V8 Supercar driver, Emily’s face lit up with pure exhilaration. “I love the speed – but it’s not speed in a straight line; it’s speed going around a corner. When you’re committed to a corner, you can go around it at speeds of around 150km,” she smiled. “That’s the thing that I love the most – the speed through corners. I love the competition, too. To be honest, I just want to beat the boys.” Wanting to leave her mark in the world of motorsports, Emily is focused on improving the future of female V8 Supercar drivers. “I think that every single girl in motorsports, and I would dare say in a lot of other male-dominated industries, just want to make it

better for the next ones,” says Emily. “Within where we are in society, we’re certainly moving forward, but we know it’s probably not going to be our generation that makes it – it’ll be the next one or the one after that.” - Abbey Halter

ACT Sustainable Household Scheme wins award Not yet a year old, the ACT Government’s Sustainable Household Scheme took out the Future Cities award at the Banksia National Sustainability Awards on 31 March. Offering zero interest loans to households that wish to install sustainable products in their homes, the Scheme has supported over 4,000 applications since its launch in September 2021. Eligible Canberrans can receive a loan ranging from $2,000 to $15,000 to purchase: rooftop solar panels, household battery storage systems, electric heating and cooling systems, hot water heat pumps, electric stove tops, and installation costs for these products. Additionally, the scheme 18

supports Canberrans looking to purchase a zero-emission vehicle. Around $30 million in loans have been settled in the scheme, which is designed to help households reduce their energy bills, while contributing to the ACT’s emission-reduction targets and supporting local businesses and jobs. The top eight suppliers in the scheme all have premises in the ACT and have received over $18 million in new business. The ACT Government said the scheme has the potential to be one of the most successful policies it has undertaken. Spotlight on young carers

At a glance Raiders fall to Manly

Around one in 20 (5.2 per cent of) people aged 12-25 in the ACT are young carers who perform significant caring responsibilities for their family members living with a disability, mental illness, or a chronic medical condition, according to Carers ACT. Nationally, it is estimated that around 235,000 young Australians aged 12 to 25 fulfill a caring role for family or friends. This week, 4-14 April, is ACT Youth Week – a time to highlight the positive contributions that young people make to our community, as well as the issues that impact them. Through the Carer Gateway, young carers can have access to counselling, coaching, peer support, resources and tailored support packages delivered through Carers ACT, their local service provider in the ACT. For access to young carer support and services, call the Carer Gateway at 1800 422 737 or visit www.carergateway.gov.au

The Canberra Raiders’ inconsistent start to the season has continued with a 25-6 loss to the Manly Sea Eagles in Mudgee NSW last Saturday. Manly scored two tries to jump out to an early lead before Raiders’ star Jack Wighton hit back to reduce the margin to 10-6 at half time. The second half belonged entirely to Manly as they scored two unanswered tries, thanks largely to the brilliance of halfback Daly Cherry-Evans and some costly Canberra errors. The Raiders now head to Wagga Wagga for a tough clash with Melbourne on Saturday 9 April.

Brumbies’ win streak over The Brumbies undefeated run has come to an end with a 21-7 loss to the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

The Brumbies managed the only try of the first half to take a 7-6 lead into the break, but their scoring dried up from there. Queensland took control in the second half, scoring two tries to none to seal the win. The Brumbies next take on Fijian Drua at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, 9 April.

Brumbies beat Force for first Super W win The Brumbies are off the mark for the Super W season, triumphing 27-19 in a back-andforth clash with the Western Force. Both sides entered the game winless but the Brumbies’ experience saw them through against an energetic Force lineup, scoring four tries to three at Viking Park. The Brumbies now meet the undefeated Fijian Drua at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday prior to the men’s match.

GIVIT seeks pre-loved furniture, whitegoods GIVIT is working with trusted support agencies across the ACT region to help make life at home more comfortable for individuals and families doing it tough. These support services are seeking quality pre-loved furniture and whitegoods for those facing a range of crises including severe financial hardship, homelessness, mental and physical illness, and domestic and family violence. One agency requires furniture, such as a lounge setting and dining table with chairs, for a single mother of five who recently lost her family’s possessions in a housefire. Other agencies are requesting whitegoods such as a dishwasher needed for an aged gentleman with limited mobility living alone, as well as a washing machine to assist a vulnerable family who have just welcomed a new baby. Rehoming your pre-loved furniture and whitegoods to those in need means you are instantly providing relief and independence and instilling a sense of dignity and hope. Additionally, you are diverting these quality items from landfill. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whats-needed, search Keyword/ Category: ‘Furniture’ or ‘Whitegoods’; Location: ‘ACT’. Under Coconut Skies

Candied kalamansi cake

WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

Colourful and vibrant, Filipino food is the culmination of naturally salty, sour and sweet ingredients from the land. New cookbook Under Coconut Skies follows 7000 Islands in bringing vivid tastes and enchanting stories from the Philippines to Aussie kitchens.

Serves 8 225g (1 1/2 cups) plain (all-purpose) flour 135g (1 1/2 cups) desiccated coconut 330g (1 1/2 cups) caster sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp sea salt Under Coconut Skies, by Yasmin Newman, published by Smith Street Books, RRP $55. Photography by Georgia Gold.

Combine the onion, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Add the chicken and toss to coat well. Cover and set aside for 1 hour. To make the chilli catsup glaze, place the ingredients and 1 Tbsp of water in a large bowl and stir well to combine. Heat 1cm of vegetable oil in a large deep-frying pan over medium heat. Place the flour and cornflour in a large bowl, season with salt and pepper and stir to combine. Working in three batches, remove the chicken from the bowl, leaving the onion mixture attached, and coat well in the flour mixture, making sure it gets into all the creases and crevices – the more the better as these will form the crispy crunchy bits. Cook the chicken for 2–3 minutes each side, until golden and crispy (or 3–4 minutes each side for drumsticks and 1–2 minutes each side for wings). Drain on paper towel, then repeat with the remaining chicken. While the chicken is still hot, add to the glaze and toss to coat well. Transfer to a serving platter and squeeze over some of the kalamansi halves or lime wedges. Scatter over the chilli and serve with the remaining kalamansi or lime on the side for squeezing over. Hot tip: Filipino fried chicken is best enjoyed as pulutan (beer food), a favourite food group in the Philippines.

3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 tsp kalamansi zest For candied kalamansi syrup 230g (1 cup) caster (superfine) sugar 2 Tbsp kalamansi juice 135g (1 cup) very thinly sliced kalamansi, seeds removed Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 20cm round cake tin and line the base with baking paper. Whisk the flour, coconut, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Whisk the melted butter, coconut milk, egg and kalamansi zest in a separate bowl. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Transfer the batter to the lined tin and bake for 45–50 minutes, until golden and a skewer comes out clean (if the top browns too quickly, cover the cake with foil). Transfer to a wire rack and cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate. Meanwhile, to make the kalamansi syrup, place the sugar and 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan and bring to the boil over high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 12–15 minutes, until very thick and syrupy (if it starts to colour, you’ve gone too far). Remove from the heat and stir in the kalamansi juice. Cool slightly, then add the kalamansi slices and gently stir, just once, to coat. Spoon the syrup and kalamansi slices over the warm cake and serve immediately. Hot tip: Kalamansi, also known as calamondin or Philippine lime, is the country’s native citrus and ubiquitous to the cuisine. It can be found at Asian grocers, however if you know a Filipino family, they likely have a tree of their own.

Cheers to Venus Vinifera ‘Sommelier’, a French term meaning ‘male wine steward’ captures how in the past expertise in wine and spirits was viewed as a male-dominated field. Today, the hospitality industry as whole is shifting, and local notfor-profit Venus Vinifera welcomes Canberran women, nonbinary and trans people to be part of that change. “Canberra has an incredibly strong hospitality community,” says Lucy Pallett-Jones after a decade working in hospitality. “We are creating a platform for Canberran women to access training and mentorship about wine, spirits and service.” Ms Pallett-Jones is the Spirits Education Manager at Venus Vinifera, an education platform established in 2022 by Caitlin Baker, restaurant manager of Aubergine. Venus Vinifera (a play on the

Latin name for grapevines and the Roman goddess of love) is a safe space for women to learn tips of the trade, “somewhere easy, accessible, and fun to get excited about”. Their program of educational events is held at prominent local hospitality venues including Bar Rochford, Pilot Restaurant, Paranormal Wines, and Aubergine. Guest teachers have included Frederique (Freddie) Raimbaud, esteemed globe-trotting sommelier. Coming out the other end of lockdown, Venus Vinifera’s official launch event will take place Sunday 10 April 6-8pm at Gorman Arts Centre. The event is supported by Lark Hill Wines, Heaps Normal, Select Aperitivo, Poor Tom’s Gin, Altina, Bellepheron, Prism Coffee and Under Bakery. time out

All abOard as Priscilla arrives tO tOwn In an epic journey mirroring that of the source material, Free-Rain Theatre’s production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the musical will open at The Q in Queanbeyan later this month some 10 months later than originally scheduled. Last year as the whole team travelled toward their opening night of 27 July, the cast and crew had prepared themselves emotionally amid COVID outbreaks engulfing the country. With a few roles having been recast due to unavoidable scheduling conflicts, there is a sense of relief and excitement as opening night on 28 April nears. Garrett Kelly, who plays Adam/ Felicia, is the sole remaining lead from the original cast, and told Canberra Weekly his new co-stars, Joe Dinn and Jarrad West, have integrated “amazingly”. “It’s all come together amazingly, and everyone’s slotted in quite well,” he said. Kelly has greatly enjoyed getting into his role as Adam, who he described as the “exuberant, chaotic” one, and the youngest of the three leads. “He doesn’t have the life experience of the other two, but really see his character develop throughout the show; he comes out at the end a little bit more well-rounded and

Enter to WIN 28

emotionally mature.” With a relatively structured and orderly day-to-day life himself, Kelly enjoys “the chaos of the character” and the nostalgia associated with playing a character a little younger than he is. “I was very similar to Adam at that stage of my life as well, so there’s a lot to draw on but it’s really quite interesting to reflect on how far I’ve come while playing this character.” He puts Priscilla’s longstanding adoration and status as an iconic Australian classic down to its authenticity across several realms. “There’s a lot of ockerisms, it’s very Australian and plays into stereotypes,” he said, “especially some of the scenes in Alice Springs and the middle of the desert.” Kelly also said the movie is “very true to Australian drag” in terms of how the characters are written, deliver their lines, perform, and the costumes. He also enjoys a connection with the film, having worked with one of the two costume designers, Tim Chappel, on a show called Dance Boss in 2018. “I wouldn’t say it’s a full circle moment, but it is a little,” he smiled. A new addition to the cast, Joe Dinn is quite possibly the most qualified man to play Tick in Canberra. He played the role professionally for four years on a Norwegian cruise

liner’s big-budget production and has comfortably jumped into the FreeRain iteration. “It’s been pretty seamless, it’s a good, fun time,” Dinn said. Working with the original creative team that brought Priscilla to Broadway, Dinn had the surreal moment of being put into the iconic thong dress by (Tim) Chappel himself, the man who designed it 30 years prior. A longstanding fan of the musical, he saw it “at least 10 times” in London before being cast. “At the core it’s about acceptance, diversity, friendship, love, and family, and everyone resonates with one of those things,” he said. “You can’t walk away from Priscilla without smiling, it’s one of those feel-good shows.”

This production also sees Dinn link up with his childhood dance teacher, Michelle Heine, who is the choreographer. It was Heine who first encouraged him to pursue dance professionally as a young man. Heine’s encouragement led to Dinn, a Canberra boy who “found himself” in local community theatre, enjoying a 20-year career as a performing artist across Europe before the pandemic brought him back to Australia. “I was surrounded by likeminded people, it’s a really beautiful community in Canberra,” he said. The Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s first full scale concert of 2022, Llewellyn One: Redemption, will have a tremendous sense of occasion for a number of reasons. It marks the Orchestra’s return to their spiritual home of Llewellyn Hall for the first time since CSO at the Cinema pre-lockdown in August 2021. With the full Orchestra set to grace the stage, there will, however, be a notable omission with chief conductor and artistic director, Jessica Cottis, unable to conduct. “We’re thrilled and very grateful to the wonderful conductor I’ve worked with before, Fabian Russell, who is stepping in at very lastminute notice,” Orchestra concertmaster, Kirsten Williams, told Canberra Weekly. “We’re all excited about this, but we’ll be missing Jessica.” Redemption’s dynamic program features four iconic works from four visionary composers:

Richard Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, Australian composer Margaret Sutherland’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Bernard Herrmann’s Suite from Vertigo, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D major, op. 107 ‘Reformation’. “This music is timeless and really uplifting, it’s quite tricky for the orchestra in parts, but very satisfying to play,” Williams said. “It’s an exciting program for us. The performance of Concerto for Violin and Orchestra will feature returning guest artist Courtenay Cleary. Williams said it’s vital for the Orchestra to showcase iconic works from Australian composers like Sutherland. “It’s very important we visit these works that haven’t been done so often,” she said. “It was first recorded in 1961 and has only been played two to three times since then; it’s an amazing concerto.” Williams and the entire Orchestra are “really

Canberra TikTok star Avneesha now on the airwaves Known for pushing out sketches, music and more to her 1.8 million followers on TikTok, Canberra social media sensation and hip-hop artist Avneesha Martin is turning her hand to radio. The TikTok star has recently joined newly formed Western Sydney hip-hop/R&B youth radio station CADA to present her own show, Keeping Up with Avneesha. Avneesha told Canberra Weekly there is close alignment with the station regarding her own personal interests in hip-hop, the online world, and culture. “I’m a huge hip-hop and R&B fan, so to me that was so important, and I was just excited about what I could bring,” she said. “I do a lot of trends online and live on the internet, and they wanted me to bring that and my musical

knowledge.” With prior experience presenting at festivals and on the TikTok Trending podcast, Avneesha enjoys the opportunity it affords her to connect with both interview subjects and the audience. “It’s the connection with people, I really enjoying having conversations … it’s very exciting and a lot of fun to be honest. “I have so many questions, everyone’s journey is so different … I’m a fan of a lot of artists, I’m trying not to fangirl too hard,” she smiled. Having relocated to Sydney from her hometown of Canberra just shy of a year ago, Avneesha regularly does the drive down the Hume to visit family and friends. She’s grateful for the abundance of opportunities to do theatre and

music throughout her childhood in Canberra. “I was always a drama kid growing up, it makes sense with all the stuff I’m doing on the internet with sketches,” she said. “I kept expanding my circle and trying new things, always writing music ever since I was little, I was in a girl group for five years, and it all happened while I was in Canberra. “I feel very safe and happy when I’m there, that allowed me to spread my wings and try new things … it was just a really good start for me.” Beginning on TikTok about three years ago, she discovered and fell in love with the social media platform right around the time she was looking to release her first official music single.

That’s arts and entertainment

Artists Byrd and Lynnice Letty Church with Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Heritage.

April the month of celebrating Heritage The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival returns this month for its 39th year, celebrating the historic, natural, and diverse cultural heritage of all peoples of the ACT and region. The festival, which runs from 9 April to 1 May, was launched in late March by Aunty Violet Sheridan,

followed by the entertaining Tim the Yowie Man and Gary Kent from Heritage Trust. “The beauty of living within the Canberra community is that you do not need to venture far to explore the history that is spread across our region,” said Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Heritage. “With this year’s theme of ‘curiosity’, the varied and

diverse program of more than 150 events on offer helps us do just that, with something for everyone from all walks of life.” For the fi rst time, Kids Week, running through the school holidays, features family-friendly, fun events where children will learn about Canberra’s heritage. There are three times as many First Nation heritage events, with 21 opportunities to explore the ACT’s rich Ngunnawal history. Join the Winanggaay Ngunnawal Language Aboriginal Corporation to learn Ngunnawal greetings and children’s songs; learn how to make and throw spears and boomerangs with Aboriginal rangers; or visit the oldest heritage site in the ACT, the Birrigai Rock Shelter. The Hall School Museum and Heritage Centre will feature an exhibition on the Brooklands Story, tracing almost 150 years

of continuous farming by the Southwell family. They will also host a cryptic clue treasure hunt during Kids Week, requiring good snooping skills to fi nd several unusual artefacts in the museum’s heritage collection. “The festival offers us an opportunity to share our enthusiasm with the general public and offer an insight into the absorbing history of the Hall-Ginninderra District,” said co-ordinator Mardie Troth. Overlapping with the Canberra and Region festival is the Queanbeyan Palerang Heritage Festival, which runs from 9 April to 14 May. Offering an opportunity to celebrate the unique history of our region, over 15 events will be held across Queanbeyan, Bungendore, and Braidwood to help the local community preserve, enjoy, and learn more

about heritage in this area. Activities include a guided tour around Queanbeyan’s historic sites including the Queanbeyan Museum, a talk with a senior conservator from Endangered Heritage on how you can prevent the loss of valuables in fi re or flood, and a presentation on the curious details and stories behind the mapping of the ACT and region. Council’s Local History Librarian, Brigid Whitbread, is eager for the community to get involved in the Festival, assuring that there is an activity for everyone. “We are so excited to bring these events to our region and share our rich history with the community,” she said. “This year’s theme for the festival is ‘curiosity’ and we are looking forward to celebrating the wealth of heritage, social,

Now showing Morbius (M) In the jungles of Costa Rica, Dr Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) sets about capturing a sample of vampire bats to aid in his quest to find a cure to his deadly blood disease. Flashing back 25 years to a hospital in Greece, a 10-year-old Morbius befriends a new young patient who shares the same illness. Flashing forward, Morbius splices vampire bat genes together into a solution! Venom, the second entry into Sony Studio’s Spider-Man universe, enjoyed success in part due to the unexpectedly bizarre and zany performance from lead Tom Hardy. Morbius’ Leto plays the part extremely straight to the point of confusion: is he an altruistic humanitarian struggling with the

monster bursting to come out, or a self-interested narcissist on a journey of discovering his inner anti-hero? Alternatively, Dr. Who’s Matt Smith has a great time as the shoehorned antagonist. Straight from the Marvel Cinematic Universe template, Smith’s foil shares the same ailment as our lead, but presents as a moral antithesis, lapping up the perceived advantages of being a vampire that also provides the means to unleash his pent-up frustrations onto a society that isolated him for his entire life. Verdict: While there is some fun to be had, the movie consciously feels like a cold, cynical corporate exercise to push a by-the-numbers commercial product down the assembly line with more to follow. 2.5 stars. ‘Indy’ mum brings travels to Canberra’s sewing community “There’s power in realising that you’re an important person in your own right and making time for that. I want to show my boys that you need to care for yourself to care for others.” Creator of Indy Bindy, Aims, is the mum you can’t help but notice at school pick-up. A world-travelled ex-diplomat, wearing incredible outfits, when other mums ask where she bought them, she flashes that megawatt smile, “Thanks! I made this.” A mum of two boys, Archie (8) and Indy (6), her online fabric store was named after the latter as they were born in the same year. “I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, we would visit mum’s family overseas every few years, and my favourite thing was collecting unique fabrics from each country. They were my souvenirs,” Aims smiled. After meeting her husband while both studying international affairs at ANU, she would go on to live in the Solomon Islands, Liberia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Japan. “When my second son was born, we were living in Tokyo. As a new mum, your whole identity

really shifts. You’ve got this allconsuming little being. “Sewing was something that was just for me, that was not connected to my little bub. It became a part of my identity that I really held onto. When he was sleeping, I’d be sewing.” While browsing an independent fabric fair in the city, several designs caught her eye. “I started speaking with the designers and I was just so inspired by their passion and creativity. “These designers wanted to share their work with the world, but they either didn’t know how to work in the online space or didn’t have the confidence in their English. That’s where I could step in, sharing their fabrics on the international market.” Through Indy Bindy, Aims connects small fabric and patent businesses together from around the globe and brings in clientele by showing off the final products on Instagram, “where there’s a really vibrant and active sewing community”. Recently, she partnered with patent designers, Anna and Isabel of The Uncut Project in Copenhagen,

and Israel-based sewist (an artist who sews), Geri in Stitches. “They provided the pattern; I provided the fabric and Geri sewed this amazing dress, and we all shared in each other’s community.” Over half a decade after founding Indy Bindy, fabric is Aims’ livelihood, but she still keeps sewing for herself – a regular patron of “creative self-care”. “A full day of sewing for fun just fills my cup right up,” she explains. “We hear self-care talked about a lot, and we tend to think of a massage, scented candles, a yoga retreat. “Don’t get me wrong, I love a massage, but for me self-care is about remembering who you are. Working out what lights you up and feeding that peace.” “If you can make time for that, I think it really affects the way you show up in the world, for your family and for those around you.” For mums in particular, Aims emphasises the importance of having an outlet that can connect you back to a part of your identity that’s separate from children. “It’s very hard to do because as mums we’ve got a lot of demands

on our time, but even if it’s just little snippets here and there, like sewing for 10 minutes a day, it can really change how you feel. “Clarity in our lives comes from when we stop. When we stop the hustle and just pause.” Due to disruptions from COVID lockdowns, postage from Japan currently takes three to six months. Aims chose to pivot her business by installing an educational arm that will support intermediate sewists to improve their skills, and make time for creative self-care. “We’re launching a sewing membership later this year. It’s all about helping people find their me-made style, connecting with themselves in that way.” “Me-made” is a common term in the online sewing community. “Sometimes ‘handmade’ can feel a bit arts and craftsy,” explained Aims. “I feel that ‘me-made’ speaks to that empowering bit. The memade pieces are the ones in your wardrobe that you always go for. “It puts a smile on your face instantly, having this end product that you imagined and brought to life with your very own hands.” - Anja de Rozario canberraweekly.com.au

Getty

Lady Gaga has become synonymous with the Grammys red carpet, taking home her 13th Grammy on the night. After years of wearing the full spectrum from edgy to extraterrestrial, she’s settled on ‘elegant’ in a Giorgio Armani Privé asymmetric gown, styled with Old Hollywood-inspired diamonds and updo.

Winner of Best Alternative Music Album, St. Vincent didn’t compromise her vintage style even at the Grammys, and it paid off ! Her floor-length, pink flamingo Gucci gown stood out from her fellow attendees, and only mildly clashed with the red carpet itself.

40

canberraweekly.com.au

Without Me singer Halsey had the most successful fashion bid of the night, making a statement in a noir-esque gown by Pressiat. Joined on the red carpet by “ironic” shopping bags and dinosaur costumes, it was Halsey who caught our eye as an unforgettable femme fatale.

Co-winner for best pop duo alongside Doja Cat for their hit song Kiss Me More, SZA was a dream in her Jean Paul Gaultier tulle gown. Surrounded by loud colours and gimmicks, the rapper brought her subtle femme flair to the occasion.

Several celebs stepped out in BDSM-inspired looks this year, but none did it quite like Dua Lipa, who’s vintage Versace dress incorporated heavy chains and leather harnessing to mimic a classic halter gown silhouette. Stunning.

Sustainable sewing DIYs for beginners Inspired by Aims and Indy Bindy to sew “me-made” but have no clue where to start? Try these super simple upcycling ideas from SCRgroup.

1

Fabric gift wrap. A sustainable alternative to paper gift wrap, fabric gift wrap is one of the easiest upcycling tips and only requires a pair of scissors. Old bedsheets can be used to wrap a gift of almost any size, and decorative tea towels (an easy upcycle project in itself) can be repurposed by the giftee. Use cute pins to hold the wrapping together or tear strips of fabric, stretching them out to use as ties.

2

Pillowcase tote bag. Studies say that a single organic cotton

tote would need to be used every day for 54 years in order to offset its environmental impact. Instead of buying one new, try your hand at a pillowcase tote. They’re already half made for you – just add handles by measuring and cutting four strips of fabric to the same length and width. Pair the strips together and sew around the borders to create two strong handles. Attach the handles to the inside of the pillowcase.

3

Fabric cotton rounds. Trace circles onto your fabric with fabric chalk (for easy erasing) and cut them out. You will need two circles per round. Pin the two circles together and stitch around the edge. Perfect for sustainable makeup removal or cleaning little noses.

The Circularity Gap Report for 2021 found that the world is only 8.6 per cent circular and needs to double this to 17 per cent to significantly reduce the risk of global warming. iStock.

Food2Soil feature

Food2Soil combats climate change one brew at a time

O

ver 28,050 cups of coffee, 1,700kg of food waste, and 3,230kg of CO2 emissions saved from being dumped in landfill and polluting our atmosphere. That’s Food2Soil’s environmental legacy so far, and they’ve only just begun. A Canberra-based, female-owned business, Food2Soil’s core mission is to honour the Earth and to be part of the solution for a better future – for their children and all generations to come. Owners Josie and Annabel affectionately call their organic food waste fertiliser a “kombucha for plants and soil” which has been lovingly brewed in their fit for purpose ‘Brewhaus’ to help reduce food waste to landfill and combat climate change. From a dietitian and ex-chef, Food2Soil understands the enormity of the food waste problem plaguing our world and are taking up the fight one brew at a time. “We both love good food, and we love enjoying our food and seeing it nourish our families. So, to see

it wasted… really stings,” said Josie. Discovering each other purely by chance, the two entrepreneurs took a leap of faith to launch their environmental business together, and now they’re about to reach their second birthday. “We use food and coffee waste from cafés to create our biofertiliser. We use the ancient practice of fermentation, not composting, and brew up a microbially live product. Most products on the market aren’t ALIVE with beneficial microbes, ours is, and when you feed them to soil it helps plants absorb nutrients. It’s a better alternative to seaweed extracts, in so many ways, plants just love it!” explained Annabel. “We are big into giving back to the Earth, as well as this being a movement – not just a product; we even use upcycled equipment, for example, our vats are from the dairy industry. What we are doing is a solution for climate change. If you support our business, you’re investing in a small piece that will go

towards the bigger puzzle of change.” Not only is Josie and Annabel’s business sustainable and environmentally friendly, but they’re donating part of their profits to Greening Australia who aim to plant 500 million trees across the country by 2030. With proven, evidence-based results, Food2Soil is purely organic. They take real pride and satisfaction from the flow of positive feedback received from happy customers. They are so sure of their product they offer a money back guarantee. “It’s a cauldron full of bubbly goodness!” said Annabel. “I’ve had professional apple growers say our apples grown with Food2Soil are unbelievably good – couldn’t believe they weren’t commercial.” Shop Food2Soil’s concentrated organic biofertiliser at www.food2soil.com.au. Former Monkey Bar site sells for $3.9m, $1m more than expected In the heart of Canberra’s busiest retail precinct, a CBD property auction has blown sellers out of the water, with a sale price more than 33 per cent above expectations. In a prime position, the property was previously home to HCF and the popular Monkey Bar, adjacent to the Canberra Centre. Located in the CBD’s key retail

throughfare, 128 Bunda Street was offered for sale by vacant possession via Expressions of Interest in late 2021. Colliers Director of Capital Markets, Matthew Winter, said the successful purchaser was a local owner occupier who plans to establish their own retail business on the site. “This property attracted a

Molonglo Valley’s first community facility opens in Denman Prospect The very first purpose-built community facility in the Molonglo Valley was opened last week, setting up Denman Prospect for an influx of future residents. The Denman Village Community Centre was officially opened by Member for Murrumbidgee and Minister for City Services, Chris Steel. Capital Estate Development (CED) managing director, Stephen Byron, said a gap in community facilities in the growing area had highlighted the need for a space for residents and community organisations. “Community is at the centre of everything we do here at Denman Prospect. With the addition of the community centre, the Denman Village precinct in more than a place to dine, shop and exercise,” said Mr Byron. “It’s now also a place for people with common interests to come together to collaborate, create and learn.” Designed by AMC Architecture and built by local company, Nikias Diamond, the community centre is set to “leave a legacy” for Denman Prospect residents and the broader Molonglo Valley. 48

Included in the facility is the Denman Village Early Learning Centre, which has been in operation since earlier this year, and the Community Centre, which will be managed by Communities at Work. Communities at Work CEO, Lee Maiden, said the opening of the new centre represents the “culmination of many years of work”. “Communities at Work has a long history of developing new and emerging communities in the ACT,” Ms Maiden said. “The Denman Village Community Centre will play an important role in providing a place for people to connect and to build a strong, resilient and thriving community.” With over 50,000 people expected to call the Molonglo Valley area home in the coming years, Mr Steel said the community is growing. “As the Molonglo Valley grows, it’s vital there are places like the Denman Village Community Centre where people can connect within their community,” he said. “The Early Learning Centre located within this facility will also provide local families with quality learning opportunities.”

number of bidders. The final sale price of $3.9 million was around $1 million more than the seller initially thought we would achieve,” Mr Winter said. “In addition to its location, what really sets this property apart and attracted buyers is the range of options it presented.” The 394sqm NLA building is located in Core Zone 1 under the ACT Territory Plan 2008, and features existing fitout infrastructure, dual access, and long-term landback prospects. were expressing interest in the sale, and both institutional investors and private investors and developers were looking for a strategic long-term location on the site.

REIA: Federal election may be weighing on home buyers In Feburary this year, new housing loan commitments fell 3.7 per cent to $32.3 billion (seasonally adjusted) according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Following a record high the previous month, the fall is most likely pre-election jitters from home buyers, according to the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA). REIA president, Hayden Groves, said the latest ABS figures show the drop in new housing loan commitments was the first since October 2021. The low figures were driven by a 4.7 per cent fall in the value of new owner-occupier loan commitments. “This was 36.7 per cent lower compared to a year ago, and continued the decline seen since the recent peak in first home buyer lending in January 2021,” Mr Groves said. “According to our Housing Affordability Report, the number of first home buyers decreased to

37,620, a fall of 0.4 per cent during the quarter with first home buyers now making up 34.1 of owner occupier dwelling commitments, a decrease of 7.8 percentage points over the year. “Falls in the number of owner-occupier first home buyer commitments were seen across all states and territories. Falls in the value of owner occupier loan commitments were seen across most states and territories with the largest falls in NSW, down 10.5 per cent, and Victoria, down 5.2 per cent.” Mr Groves said investor lending also fell, with the value of loan commitments falling 1.8 per cent to $10.8 billion. “Despite these early signs of a usual softening in a pre-federal election, the market is still historically very strong and investors in particular should continue to buy with confidence knowing negative gearing now has bi-partisan support,” he said.

The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. Making the most of every day, your way Marigal Gardens is a thriving community with wonderful facilities and a lifeaffirming vibe that residents love. There are organised activities for all tastes should you choose to pursue a long-held passion or try something new. For more unstructured pleasures, catch up for a coffee, indulge in a gym workout or enjoy a relaxing sundowner at the bar. For the young at heart there is Kambah Adventure Playground right next door.

And should travel beckon, our team and neighbours make sure a home is well looked after, so residents can take off with confidence. While buyers focus on lots of different reasons when making their decision, most come to a similar conclusion when they have finally settled in. Russell’s leading role in modern cinema, along with his role as a father and guardian of those he cares for, will increasingly be a focus as his priorities turn progressively towards his position as a role model. Russell may re-evaluate where his true priorities lie, especially in regard to his various duties, responsibilities, finances and projects. This will be a good time for him to formulate foolproof financial strategies for the future.

This week’s stars are ideal for creativity and romance but could be misleading or even confusing, so you must avoid making rash decisions, especially in connection with health, wellbeing, work and relationships. above all, avoid a power struggle this weekend and midweek, as you’re likely to regret it.

You like to feel you understand others well, and yet this doesn’t guarantee smooth relationships. This week, be sure to avoid conflict as it could arise from a simple misunderstanding. This aside, the current stars are ideal for romance, so plan something lovely midweek, when jupiter and neptune align.

You’re a romantic soul, so you’ll appreciate this week’s romantic ambience. It’s an excellent time to reconnect with someone close. make your home your sanctuary and love will blossom. However, if some relationships have been rocky, be prepared to work extra hard to avoid arguments.

The jupiter-neptune conjunction could create uncertainty so be sure to use your intuition, as it will point to a solution. Then you’ll be ready to embrace fresh projects. Your home life, neighbourhood and key relationships will be a focus. If money has been scarce, this is a good time for a new budget.

Taurus apr 21 – maY 21

leO jul 23 – aug 23

scOrPiO ocT 24 – nov 22

aquarius jan 21 – feb 19

Your involvement with a friend or organisation will be in the spotlight and you may feel emotionally invested in an outcome. romance could flourish, but you must avoid unrealistic expectations of someone or something. You can be obstinate when under pressure, so double check you are being adaptable, especially this weekend.

You may be inclined to overestimate your financial reach, so ensure you find out exactly where you stand before making large investments. You’ll appreciate the chance to reconnect with someone close on a relaxed basis. If you’re looking for a commitment, this may be elusive, so you must re-think expectations.

You enjoy socialising but if you’re slightly rushed off your feet, take some time for the people closest to you, such as old friends and family. otherwise, some of your neighbourly or social commitments could get in the way of duties, especially this weekend. prepare for romance midweek.

Your inner dreamer comes out this week and you may even feel a little forgetful. a visit to a beautiful place will appeal. maintain perspective with someone with a larger than life personality and focus on good relationships. avoid overspending – you’ll regret it! You may, however, receive a financial boost.

gemini maY 22 – jun 21

virgO aug 24 – sepT 23

sagiTTarius nov 23 – dec 21

Pisces feb 20 – mar 20

You prefer to be clear about your options and your future, meaning you find situations that are up in the air challenging. This weekend, shared concerns and decisions may add a degree of tension, so avoid arguments where possible. This aside, the arts, spirituality, inspiration and true romance will appeal.

expect to experience a taste of abundance, love and romance. However, if some relationships have been distant or confusing, you must establish common ground, otherwise interactions will only reveal increased differences. romance-wise, this week will be one to remember, especially for mid-september virgos.

emphasis on your personal life, home, creativity and on pursuing a sense of purpose will motivate you to boost circumstances. However, work and someone close will also need your attention. The more you focus on good communication skills, the better your outcome. romance could go off the dial midweek, so organise a date!

You’ll appreciate this week’s stars as they create a lovely romantic vibe, especially if you were born mid-march. You’ll enjoy socialising and being creative, but must avoid an altercation this weekend revolving around money or principles. look for spiritual and creative insight to find the best path forward.

PAINTING I studied painting at the ANU Art School, and while it has remained a hobby (that I wish I could do more), making and creating has always been a passion. There is something special about seeing an image in your mind take shape on a canvas.

CUPCAKES Yup - they are delicious, and they are adorable. Cupcakes take the cake in my treat preference. The best cupcakes in Canberra are hands down made by @sugarplumfairy_cakes – seriously, do yourself a favour and grab a cupcake or 12 from her new shop front in Giralang.

I am a serial over dresser at every occasion. Constantly inspired by my fashionista best friend @miss.goodytwoshoes, there is something about a good outfit that makes me feel confident, happy and empowered.

RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE

My favourite things

Mim Rizvi was born and raised in Canberra, studying at Lyneham High School, Radford College and then Australian National University. After graduating, Mim made her way to Brent Street in Sydney to study Musical Theatre full time. She then toured nationally in a series of Australian plays before founding The Beanies with performer friends Laura Dawson and Michael Yore. Together, the trio have achieved a Podcast Award (2018), an ARIA Nomination (2019), and are now regulars on ABC Kids TV and iView. Mim has also spent time at the Sydney Opera House working in publicity as well as encouraging other female business owners in her work with the Accelerator for Enterprising Women.

THE BEANIES YOUTUBE CHANNEL The Beanies YouTube chanel is like stepping back in time for me. I love seeing the evolution of our group from five years ago filming clips on our phone and editing on the fly to our fully polished green screen animation clips. There are also live stream concerts filmed in lockdown and behind-the-scenes footage from some of our favourite shows. Go check it out and hit that red subscribe button while you’re there (thanks!).

For anyone who isn’t familiar with Rupaul’s Drag Race - it’s not about cars. It’s kind of a crossover of Project Runway with America’s Next Top Model but then add GLITTER! This show is my go-to when I’m down and out and I certainly clocked a lot of hours in front of it during lockdown. Drag is about not conforming to norms and being your true self no matter when anyone else thinks. Even as a straight female, the show has lessons for all. In fact, I often find myself saying RuPaul quotes when we meet a setback in our Beanie business life, like “A winner is a dreamer who never gives up”.
