contents 08 From the editor Although each season in Canberra has its charms, autumn is my favourite. I love the gentle warmth of the sunshine, the crisp mornings, mild days, the festivals, harvesting the last of the summer crops, and the riotous colours of the trees. As a child growing up in Brisbane, we rarely saw autumn leaves. I clearly remember the first time my siblings and I tossed piles of crisp yellow leaves in the air in a park in Tenterfield NSW during a May school holiday road trip south. It’s right up there with my memory of seeing snow for the first time in my teens. Autumn also stirs fond memories of the unbridled joy my own children experienced jumping in piles of leaves (I’d just spent an hour raking up), and of turning into a tree-lined street in Forrest as the morning sun glowed through the leaves imbuing the scene with glorious golden light. Magic! Whatever the season, may you open your heart to its beauty. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a heart-warming book launch at Lifeline Canberra’s Book Lovers Lane, opening night of Bell Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Friday lunch with a friend, meeting new people at a Traditional Boat Squadron dinner on Saturday, and the privilege of riding in Bob’s elegant replica midcentury speedboat, Eleanor, in the Canberra Classic Boatfest grand parade on Sunday. Take care,

Acton Peninsula is wrong site for child abuse memorial, says victim’s mother Acton Peninsula has been chosen as the site for the National Memorial for Victims and Survivors of Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, but some victims’ relatives are unhappy with the location. The Federal Government committed funding for the Memorial in 2020, and in February this year, the National Capital Authority announced that construction would begin on the Memorial on the southwest of Acton Peninsula, adjacent to Lake Burley Griffin. “Ms Smith” (not her real name), the mother of a victim, believes the site chosen is inappropriate: in her opinion, it is remote, unsafe, and hidden away, and women have been raped there. “We were very disappointed to find where they put it,” she said. “This proposed memorial is to be located out of sight and away from other national memorials.” She wants the Memorial relocated to the Parliamentary Triangle, where, she said, it would be safer to visit and more visible.
Ms Smith claims the Acton Peninsula site is the location of former Canberra Hospital buildings that were demolished in 1973, but not remedied for asbestos. She believes the site may still contain asbestos, and so be dangerous for visitors, particularly children. The buildings, Ms Smith said, were used as geriatric and rehabilitation wards, and many Canberrans died there. The site is also built over the former hospital morgue, she said, and below the hospital emergency department, where child victims of sexual abuse were examined. Nurses and ANU students were raped at the site, she said, and at least one person committed suicide there. The NCA told CW the location did not house any known building structures of the former Royal Canberra Hospital. Moreover, Ms Smith said, the site chosen for the Memorial is close to a proposed Police Museum; she considers this inappropriate,
alleging that some victims of abuse had “fractious relationships” with police. The NCA states that a specialist Advisory Group – comprising victims of institutional child sexual abuse and other experts – provided oversight and guidance on the Memorial’s establishment. A spokesperson said a range of potential sites in Canberra were identified and considered for the Memorial. Sites within the Parliamentary Triangle were not preferred by the Advisory Group, a spokesperson said; the Acton Peninsula site was unanimously selected. But Ms Smith claimed no ACT victim representatives were involved in picking the site; the NCA, she alleged, handpicked the site without properly consulting victims or their families, especially Canberrans who use the lake or the surrounding areas regularly. “This is troubling, given the high number of victims in the ACT,” Ms Smith said. Australia’s first kava lounge opens in Canberra The opening of Australia’s first kava lounge at the RUC Turner Bowls Club on Sunday 10 April “marked a milestone of the positive things to come for the kava industry”, says Fa’onetapu Takiari, who has advocated for years for the traditional Pacific beverage to be widely available here. Islanders have drunk kava – a psychoactive, non-alcoholic substance prepared from the root of the Piper methysticum, mixed with cold water – for 3,000 years. Medical evidence suggests it is healthy, relieves stress, and encourages communication, but kava has been restricted in Australia since 2007. Commercial imports were forbidden, and passengers could only bring 2kg in their luggage for personal use. In the ACT, it was listed as a ‘prescription only medicine’, with an exemption for cultural use at the Multicultural Festival since 2012. Two years ago, however, the Federal Government launched a kava pilot program, and a National Kava Forum held in Canberra last year recommended trialling the 6
canberraweekly.com.au
establishment of a kava lounge in the ACT. Following Sunday’s launch, the kava lounge will soon have a permanent home within ClubsACT, Mr Takiari said. “The launch of Canberra’s first permanent kava lounge is not only notable, but inevitable,” Mr Takiari said. “It will provide a relaxed social environment for members of our community.” Senator Zed Seselja, Minister for International Development and the Pacific, a guest of honour at the launch, said the kava lounge was “very exciting, particularly for our Pacific community. “They have really been disconnected in the last couple of years from their homelands, and to be able to have that cultural connection through kava is very, very valuable.” He hoped the kava lounge would become “a real fixture in the Inner North” and out into the suburbs. “Maybe we’ll see more kava bars opening up around the place.” The Federal Government will monitor the trial and work with importers to make sure the trade can continue, Senator Seselja said. and Fijian High Commissioner, H.E. Luke Daunivalu, also attended Sunday’s event. Proceeds went to the Tonga tsunami relief effort. Mr Takiari will serve kava in Petrie Place on Good Friday afternoon, joining Fair Canberra as it feeds homeless people. “We encourage everyone to take part, come along, and enjoy themselves,” Mr Takiari said. “All are welcome.”

Violence in ACT schools must end Firstly, well done to Boris Johnson and Scott Morrison for their support and armed assistance to Ukraine. The supply of anti-ship missiles by the UK especially will help a lot. The rugby fraternity will also be saddened to learn of the death of a brave rugby forward, Oleksi Tsybko, mayor of Smela and former Captain of the Ukrainian national side, who fell for his homeland whilst defending his city from the Russian invaders. Closer to home, I was disappointed but not surprised to see Education Minister Yvette Berry survive a vote of no confidence in relation to Calwell High where in recent times Year 7 and 8 has been sent home for the rest of the term because of gang violence by unruly mobs of students who attacked several teachers, including the principal who they threw across her desk and another teacher who suffered a dislocated shoulder, broken teeth and bruising. Work Cover deemed the school unsafe. Teachers at the school are exhausted and described the school as a “war zone”. The AEU reports that this is not an isolated incident and in the last quarter there have been
8
canberraweekly.com.au
1,610 reported incidents of violence in our public schools, mostly against teachers. For my sins, I still hold the record as the longest-serving ACT Education Minister (March 1995 to November 2001). Twenty years ago, the ACT had the highest scores in literacy and numeracy in Australia for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and were right up there amongst the best in the world. Today we are mid-ranking in Australia and behind Kazakhstan in the world ratings. We did have the odd act of violence in schools but attacks on teachers were rare. It’s not money that’s the problem. Our public schools are the best resourced in Australia – 20-25 per cent above the Australian average. Back in 1965 when I was a student in Year 8 at Narrabundah High, whilst we had the odd schoolyard fight, there was no mob violence and no one would dream of hitting a teacher. Yes, we had the cane then as a deterrent, but this endemic violence is something much more recent. It seems to have worsened in the last 10 years. The Greens should hang their heads in shame
WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
for not voting with the Liberals in their vote of no confidence in the Minister. Yvette Berry seems to be a nice person, but the buck does stop with her as minister. In an assembly with a minority government, she would be gone. I would suggest a solution to the violence: Principals need to go to court and obtain restraining orders, and press charges for assault against the worst offenders. When I was Special Magistrate in 2008-09, I granted a number of restraining orders against some unruly high school students who had bullied some fellow students. They seemed to work quite well and there is nothing like a day in court as the defendant to concentrate the mind. Exclusive: Meet new Ukraine Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko His Excellency Vasyl Myroshnychenko’s journey to Canberra feels like something out of a movie – after applying for the position of Ambassador and being selected in record time, seeing the dramatic change in his country, and fleeing to Romania in order to leave Ukraine, here he is. “It’s been a crazy month to be frank. I still can’t believe it’s happening to me. I couldn’t come from Ukraine directly; I came from Romania because there are no flights out of Ukraine. I was based in Kyiv when the war started. We tried to escape for two days but we couldn’t get out of the city because there were traffic jams and no fuel,” Mr Myroshnychenko
told Canberra Weekly. “We then went to my hometown and several days later, my wife asked me to take her to Romania with our 18-yearold daughter and five-year-old son. So, I drove her to the border and they crossed it on foot. They were there for three weeks and once I got the appointment and I picked up the credentials, I went to Romania, and we flew out to Australia.” Arriving just 11 days ago (prior to this exclusive interview with CW on 6 April) hasn’t allowed the new Ambassador to explore much of Canberra, and his job is 24/7 right now. But living in the Inner South has

given him a few opportunities to run beside the lake, which he said he “loves”. “I’ve received a very warm welcome here. I’d never been to Australia before,” he smiled. “What I can say for now is I really love all the Australians I’ve met. What I like about you is you’re very simple, down-to-earth people, and that’s just what I’m like.” Meeting the local Ukrainian community was at the top of Ambassador Myroshnychenko’s list when he arrived in Canberra, and the very day after landing, he spent some time at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church In Turner. “I think the Ukrainian community has mobilised here and is very united. They are fundraising money for Ukraine, they’re helping those who have come here [displaced people] and they’re very motivated and united,” he said. “I’m not sure how many Ukrainians are going to come to Canberra, but there might be some coming, so I would like to ask local companies to hire those people. They will have a three-year permit to work, so please hire them and give them jobs. They’re very hardworking people and diligent with a high integrity.” On Saturday mornings outside the Embassy of Russia in Griffith, there is a gathering of local people protesting the invasion, and Ambassador Myroshnychenko is glad the Canberra community is rallying for Ukraine.
“I would like to thank [people protesting] for that. We need them there every Saturday. We need to have them there as a sign of support for Ukraine, a sign of condemnation of the barbaric Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Mr Myroshnychenko said. When it comes to the politics of an unprovoked war in his country, Ambassador Myroshnychenko’s demeanour changed in an instant; still warm and friendly, yet undoubtedly determined to do what he can to save Ukraine. “We’ve heard all the lies from the Russian Ambassador and Russian President and the Russian political establishment. We are defending our country… our sovereignty. Russia is on a mission to take control of the country and we will not allow that. “We will keep on fighting – it’s a clear message. We didn’t go to invade Russia; we want Russia out of our country. We want to pursue European integration; we want to build a strong and prosperous country.” However, in between working to save his country, he has found one Sunday to take his family to the National Zoo, at the request of his son. “My last and final message to Australians and Canberrans would be that when the war is over, come visit Ukraine and see all of its beauty,” Ambassador Myroshnychenko smiled. - Abbey Halter Read an extended version of this story online.

I invite your prestigious magazine and who is in charge of researching and writing about the ‘Rental Housing Market Crisis in Canberra’ to get first-hand experience by coming to this property to see how the tenants’ behaviour destroys the rental supply in Canberra. The best part is the ‘lame duck’ style Tribunal [ACAT] closes their eyes by aiding and abetting to destroy the rental market. In this particular case, the Tribunal has given orders to clear the garden and ordered that the tenants pay the cleaning costs. The landlord has to go to the Magistrates Court with the help of a lawyer to claim these costs of cleaning inside the house where the tenants’ combined family income was over $15,000 per month. The tenants do not care or give a hoot about the Tribunal Orders. The ACT Attorney-General, who is currently planning to remove the no-cause restriction from the Tenancy Act, and the Housing Minister need to understand why the free fall, sharp deterioration of the rental market is taking place in Canberra. The Tenancy Union, Tenancy Act and other so-called sympathisers need to focus on how to impose severe penalties for not complying with the Tribunal Orders or the Tenancy Act. I hope they would see the hardships experienced by the landlords who provide these properties to these tenants. Not all tenants are in the same category but those rorting the system know exactly how to
abuse the loopholes. There are clear signs the ACT Government’s sympathetic tenants’ policy will completely destroy the Canberra rental market and the Labor-Green Government can take the credit for this. - Contact details supplied I agree with everything Bill Stefaniak said in ‘can the tram’ (CW 7 April 2022 p10). What a gross waste of money. I cannot see why electric buses would not have been the solution if reducing pollution was the aim. Having the tram is just a gimmick, and just buses on a track instead of wheels. Given that approximately only 4 per cent of Canberrans use public transport, and most of them would not be on the tram routes, reducing the percentage even more, why on earth go to that expense for the whole of the Canberra population. If the track goes the way they plan, the roads around Parliament House are going to be disrupted and chaotic for months or even years. They are already chaotic in peak times so are they going to redirect the traffic, if so where to? Or has this not been considered? We can only hope that the Federal Government do not give permission to go that way. - V. Evans, Macgregor ACT People have bad memories. Albo forgot the jobless figures but apologised. ScoMo forgot to come home from holidays for a national emergency then made excuses. - D. Steley, Heyfield VIC

At a glance Canberra’s McConnell takes mountain biking World Cup win Canberra mountain biker Rebecca McConnell has claimed the biggest win of her career, storming home to take victory in the opening round of the XCO World Cup in Brazil. McConnell trailed Anne Terpstra by over 10 seconds heading into the last lap, but she had too much late acceleration for her rival as she completed the overtake and pulled away to win by 17 seconds. The victory was a dream come true for McConnell who last year finished on the podium five times, including three times in second place. “I’m pretty lost for words, it’s pretty special,” she said. “Everybody said this win would come and I’ve been so close these last couple of years, being on the podium more often than not. “Everything can go well, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen on race day. So, this is just unbelievable.”
Raiders lose to Storm in Wagga The Canberra Raiders have lost their second straight game after a 30-16 loss to the Melbourne Storm in Wagga Wagga last weekend. The Raiders once again had themselves to blame, with 14 errors for the match gifting the Storm too many chances and their star playmakers took full advantage. Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes was clearly the best player on the field, scoring two brilliant tries, while Harry Grant and Cameron Munster were also damaging. Canberra had enough chances but continued to make mistakes in key moments, with coach Ricky Stuart saying results wouldn’t change until his side improved its efficiency. “It’s a frustrating time for us at the moment because we’re just not putting any team under any pressure,” he said. “They’re not enjoying their football at the moment because you’re not putting teams under pressure … until we do, we’re not going to enjoy our football.” The Raiders now quickly turn their attention to tonight’s (Thursday 14 April) home game
against the North Queensland Cowboys at GIO Stadium. Canberra will be looking to get one back on the Cowboys after they copped a heavy 26-6 defeat in Townsville earlier this season.
Brumbies beat Drua to go top Four tries sourced from mauls have helped the Brumbies beat Fijian Drua 33-12 and return to the top of the Super Rugby Pacific ladder with their seventh win from eight games. At Suncorp Stadium on 9 April, the Fijians produced flashes of brilliance but couldn’t hang with the Brumbies’ power up front. Just as important as getting back top spot for the Brumbies was marking James Slipper’s 150th Super Rugby game with a win, as he became just the 12th Australian to reach that milestone. “It was special to get the win tonight, it was a tough game actually and pretty wet … just happy to get the win,” Slipper said. “We’ll have a beer in the sheds to celebrate.” The Brumbies now have a bye before they take on the New Zealand teams, starting with the Highlanders at AAMI Park, Melbourne on Sunday 24 April.

vegetables with your hand – this will help to draw out excess moisture – then set aside for 5 minutes.
For the dough
Tip the vegetables into a colander and press down firmly with your hands to extract as much liquid as possible. Return the vegetables to the bowl. Chop the chives very finely and stir through the filling.
500g (3 1/3 cups) self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting For the filling 1 sweetheart cabbage, about 500g, or the same weight of any other green cabbage 200g spinach 200g Chinese chives 2 tsp salt 2 Tbsp cooking oil For the dough, put the flour into a mixing bowl. Slowly pour in 1 cup of warm water into the flour with one hand, while mixing with the other. Add just enough water to make a dough – you don’t want it to get too sticky. Knead until the dough forms a ball in the bowl, then cover and set aside for 15–20 minutes. Meanwhile, make the filling. Wash the cabbage and chop it very finely, then put it into a large mixing bowl. Wash the spinach thoroughly and chop it finely, then add it to the bowl. Add the salt and oil and squish it through the 20
canberraweekly.com.au
Take the dough out of the bowl and knead it for a couple of minutes, then divide it into four equal pieces and return to the bowl. Sprinkle a little flour onto your work surface – but don’t overdo it, as too much flour can stiffen the dough, making the momos harder to wrap later. Take the first piece of dough, keeping the rest covered in the bowl to stop them from drying out. Roll out the dough into a sausage shape about 25cm long, then cut into ten equal slices, lightly flattening each one with your hand. Using a rolling pin, and making one wrapper at a time, push and pull the flattened piece of dough up and down quickly and firmly, holding it with your spare hand and turning it little by little as you go. The middle should end up a bit thicker than the outer edges, and it should fill the palm of your hand; it doesn’t need to be a perfect circle. When you’re ready to fill, wrap and fold your momos, shaping them however you like. For best results, steam the momos over a high heat for 13–16 minutes, cooking them in batches according to the size of your steamer.
2 Tbsp cooking oil 2 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2.5cm piece of ginger, washed but not peeled, thinly sliced 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon turmeric 1 tsp Bassar curry masala (or hot chilli powder) 1 1/2 teaspoons Madras curry powder 2 Tbsp coconut milk powder 6–8 fresh curry leaves, or 10–12 dried 400ml tin of coconut milk 600g chicken breast fillets, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 tsp salt Chopped coriander, to garnish Place a heavy-bottomed saucepan over a medium-high heat and add the oil. When it’s hot, add the garlic and ginger and let it brown for a couple of minutes, then add the onion and stir for a further 2 minutes. Now add the tomatoes, turmeric, curry masala and curry powder. Mix together and cook for 10–15 minutes, turning the heat down a little and adding about 50ml (2 1/2 tablespoons) of water if anything starts to catch, then add the coconut milk powder, curry leaves and coconut milk and mix thoroughly. Take your time here: you are making a curry paste, and it needs to be cooked through completely before you can add the chicken. Now add the chicken and salt. Turn the heat back up to high, stir the chicken through the sauce and cook for 8–10 minutes, adding a little boiling water – but only a little – if anything sticks. The pan should be quite dry to begin with, before the juices from the chicken start to be released, so wait a while before adding any water. After the chicken has been in for 8 minutes, check to make sure it is fully cooked. To do this, take a piece out and cut it through the middle – it should be white all the way through. If the sauce looks too thick, add a little more boiling water, and stir briskly for 2 minutes. Garnish with coriander, if you like, then serve.

From 23 April to 15 May, Canberra Theatre will host the Queens of Six the Musical: Loren Hunter (Jane Seymore), Chelsea Dawson (Katherine Howard), Phoenix Jackson Mendoza (Catherine of Aragon), Kala Gare (Anne Boleyn), Kiana Daniele (Anna of Cleves), and Vidya Makan (Catherine Parr).

Take 6: with the queens of
SIX the Musical
Six the Musical has taken the world by storm since 2017, and this year takes the Canberra Theatre stage from Saturday 23 April. The witty, pop-fuelled remix of history stars the six wives of Henry VIII - Britain’s notorious Tudor King - as they take to the microphone to reclaim their stories. Diversifying the Tudor queens by adding the essence of music royalty, like Beyonce and Rihanna, it’s the story of how royalty looked years ago represented by how “queens” look today. Following a sold-out season at the Sydney Opera House, returning queens Kala (Boleyn), 22

Loren (Seymore), Kiana (Cleves), and Vidya (Parr), and new queens Phoenix (Aragon) and Chelsea (Howard) took five (or six) minutes out with Canberra Weekly’s Anja de Rozario.

How does it feel to be part of a show that grew from a student production to such an empowering and beloved musical? Kala: “Empowering being a massive word. The show came from such humble beginnings. The writers were really just seeing if this thing would work and then it just went boom! That’s really
relatable as women who write. Just wanting this piece that you’re passionate about to do well, and then suddenly it has these legs.” Vidya: “Because it started off with no necessary ambition to be the next big thing, Six is so truthful in the way it talks about these women and rewrites their stories in a modern context. It appeals not just to women but to anyone who feels underrepresented. We’re all outsiders in some way or another, and the show speaks directly to that in Six different ways. “For me, being a part of such a diverse range of voices on stage is absolutely at the heart of why I do this. Theatre was such a big part of my childhood. My family’s an immigrant family, from South Africa with Indian heritage, and there’s no reason as to why they loved theatre, but we just did. Still, I never, ever saw myself on stage. When I wanted to choose this as a career path, that was a huge thing for my family. They were so supportive, but worried that there wasn’t space for me. What show am I going to be a part of? Could I ever play Eliza in My Fair Lady? “When I started auditioning for commercial shows, I was getting all the way to the end of so many auditions, but always missing out at the last minute, for not being enough of ‘something’ or being too much of ‘something’. “Before Six, I never knew what it was like to be in a commercial theatre audition room and be seen as a three-dimensional woman. Not as a brown woman walking in to fill in a brown role.”
2
Who is most similar to their character and in what way?
Vidya: “I don’t think you could say one of us is the most similar. We all have the essence of our characters. That’s the beauty of this show, we’re playing characters that are, in some ways, heightened versions of ourselves. It’s weird! (laughs) It’s not like any experience I’ve ever had.” Loren: “It’s Vidya.” Phoenix: “Vidya is Parr. She’s the most clever and intelligent person I’ve ever met, which is such Parr energy.” Loren: “The way Parr switches the script; Vidya does that on the reg.” Chelsea: “It must be Vidya, how she makes English sound like poetry is insane!” Kiana: “She said something once while we were rehearsing, she goes, ‘I just don’t know how to express what I’m feeling.’ And I’m like, ‘Seriously? You’re the most articulate person I’ve ever met, but that’s cute that you think that’.” (continued page 24)

his month saw the dawn of a baking revolution, as the first stones were laid for a brand new online marketplace, made just for home-bakers. What many people don’t know is that Canberra is home to hundreds of home-baking small businesses, who sell their goods mostly via social media and through word of mouth. For years, home-bakers have struggled to get their small businesses off the ground, relying on repeat customers or muddled online marketplaces, and getting drowned out by mass-production bakehouses. No one knows this better than Royal Canberra Show champion and CWA judge, Andrea Butler. Her brainchild, Bakesale, is designed to be a polished online storefront that makes sales easy, so home-bakers can get back to doing what they love. Launched in BETA mode in early April, Bakesale is a labour of love being brought to life through the pandemic, made for home-bakers, by a home-baker. When Andrea was unable to provide her baked goods to friends and family, she noticed how difficult it was to find and recommend other home-bakers, even just within the ACT. “Likewise, it was difficult for home-bakers to find clients,” says Andrea. “That’s where Bakesale comes in; we create the connections.” A recipient of the Canberra Innovation Network entrepreneur scholarship, Bakesale was sponsored as a sustainable business supporting local bakers. “We’re disrupting the baking market!” says Andrea. “Saying no to mass-produced, churned-out and shipped-in products, when there are talented local bakers right here in Canberra.”
The primary value that Bakesale will offer is their clean, easy-to-use online platform, with tools specifically created to meet the needs of professional home-bakers. “The home-baking market is unique,” explains Andrea. “It needs tools for pickup, delivery, and facilitating connections. “Home-bakers are inviting customers into their homes. It’s a kitchen-to-kitchen based market.” Home-bakers can have their own store space on Bakesale, add their branding, set their prices, and choose delivery methods. “We manage the admin and finances, running the platform in the background so they can get back to doing what they love – baking!” Bakesale’s geo-location feature allows customers to see what locals have to offer in their city, state, or even their street. “Most importantly,” Andrea notes, “you can also search a location that’s far away. So, if you want to gift baked goods to your mum on Mother’s Day – even if she’s in another state – you can send her homemade goods from her local area.” Bakesale is Canberra-born and based but will soon be expanding across the Eastern seaboard. The fully operational Bakesale platform will launch in June for Canberra bakers and then will be rolled out in stages across NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Andrea says that now is the time for Canberra home-bakers to get in touch with Bakesale at hello@ bakesale.com.au to be on board for the June launch. “There are a few reasons why homemade is best, even better if it’s local,” says Andrea. “We all know there’s a bit of magic in homemade. More customisation, more range, and a better product for a fairer price.” Any registered ABN-holding
food business can join Bakesale. Simply register at bakesale.com.au or get in touch at hello@bakesale. com.au to set up your store. There are no joining fees, and online tools are free to use.
Bakesale was designed with the community in mind. When a sale is made, just 5 per cent commission is paid to keep Bakesale running. Join the Baking Revolution at bakesale.com.au

If you weren’t playing your queen, which other would you choose and why?
Vidya: “Cleves! I don’t want to sing her song, but I want her story (laughs). Her song’s amazing but it’s a lot of work.” Kala: “I reckon I’d want to try my hand at a swing roll. They’re the foundation of our show really. Or maybe a part of our band, the Ladies in Waiting.” Phoenix: “Jane Seymore’s Heart of Stone is my favourite song. I get so emo up the back, every single night, raising my imaginary lighter. But if I were to play a different character, it would be Anne Boleyn. We call her the little chaos demon…” Loren: “I’m going to be beige and say I wouldn’t play any other character. I feel more Jane Seymore than anybody else. Especially the goofy jokes she comes out with. That happens in real life! I’ll crack one and everyone goes, ‘Ughhh Loren’.” Kiana: “This is going to sound bad, but I only want to play Anna (Cleves). I went into that
audition, and I was like, ‘Mine. That one.’ My energy was just so drawn to her that I can’t imagine being any other queen.” Chelsea: “I always thought I was a Bobo [Boleyn]. There’s a part of me that thinks ‘Oh, I would love to be a swing’ but at the same time that’s such hard work.”
4
Each of the queens was inspired by a huge female name in music. Who else inspires your performance?
Vidya: “Malala Yousafzai inspires me; I find a lot of her in Parr. I’ve been listening about the incredible resilient women in Afghanistan and hearing how they’re survivors in their own story. We’re told that so many women, then and now, have no agency in their societies but the truth is we always do.” Kiana: “Cleves is very Rihanna, although I also like to incorporate Cardi B. She has this attitude of ‘You can find me funny. And if you don’t, well, that’s alright, I’m going to be here anyways.’ Though we did lip sync battle during one rehearsal, and I rapped Lizzo’s Truth Hurts as Cleves.”
Chelsea: “I really connected [Howard] with Britney Spears and Ariana Grande because someone pointed out how their fame was very much portrayed through the male lens as they grew up. It kind of all clicked for me how to understand Katherine Howard, especially since [Grande and Spears] are also now reclaiming their stories as boss women.”
5
Six is all about rewriting history for historical women who didn’t have a voice when they were alive. If they could see how they’re portrayed now, what do you think they’d say? Loren: “I reckon they’re having tea going ‘Finally. After how many years?’” Kiana: “I think [Cleves, a German] would be confused as to why an Italian-Australian is running around making everyone laugh. But Anne of Cleves was so clever, and she really came out on top. She’s probably watching over like, ‘yeah, I was smart. I played the game right. You might think that I was cast aside, but I stayed in the world, let’s celebrate my

incredible life.’” Chelsea: “I think Howard would be proud, too. In her short life, she thought she was falling in love, and then the next guy to disappoint her came one after the other. But her song opens up a bunch of conversations about sexual assault and toxic relationships, in a really clever and vulnerable way. “What has been beautiful is the messages I’ve gotten from mums writing ‘thank you so much for giving me a way to talk to my child about what that song meant’. This whole show allows so many different conversations around being a woman. Whether that be owning financial stability, sexual assault and harassment, motherhood and what that means. Kiana: “Issues we’re still dealing with today. Now we’re just talking about them a bit more.”

Are you looking forward to coming to Canberra?
Phoenix: “I am absolutely looking forward to coming to Canberra. While I was road tripping last year, I really wanted fish and chips and I read so many reviews about this one place near Parliament - but it was closed! So that’s the first thing I’m going to try.” Loren: “Canberra is just a breath of fresh air. Sydney is chaos, and it’d be nice to go someplace where you can drive 10 minutes out of the city and see a farm.” Phoenix: “We’ve had a lot of Canberran fans in the ‘Queendom’ come down and watch the show and they’re so lovely.” Loren: “I’m excited for them to experience it in their own city.” Phoenix: “And get a history lesson but in a really fun, Spice Girl way!” - Anja de Rozario

Shelley Burr enjoys ‘whirlwind’ writing debut novel
Canberra author Shelley Burr’s debut crime-fiction novel, Wake, will be released nationally later this month. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
For Canberra author Shelley Burr, the last four years spent working toward the release of her first novel, crime-fiction Wake, has been “an absolute whirlwind”. Since conceiving the story in 2018, Burr moved quickly, completing her first draft in a “mad, tearing hurry”. “I felt haunted by it, I wanted to get it down on the page so I could stop running scenes over and over in my head,” she told Canberra Weekly. Burr then took the draft through a former ACT Writer’s Centre year-long manuscript
program called Hardcopy, giving it “a good polish” in the process. From there, still a work in progress, her manuscript took out the 2019 UK Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger award and was shortlisted for the Kill Your Darlings Unpublished Manuscript award. “That really was a turning point, because winning that made me think maybe I’ve got something here,” she said. “I had a bit of publisher interest at the time, and probably I could have started to shop it around at that point, but I didn’t feel it was the

book it could be.” Taking another year to do more significant rewrites on the work, when she was ready, Burr had her agent send it out to publishers. “She said maybe you’ll hear something, it can take three months to hear something, but I heard back within a couple of days,” Burr said. Going to auction with three publishers interested, Wake was sold in May 2021 as part of a two-book deal with Hachette. With author copies arriving earlier this month, Burr’s satisfaction and excitement is palpable. “It’s just been incredible, a lot of hard work and tiring, but very satisfying seeing the book shape up.” Based on an unsolved disappearance in a fictional NSW farming community, Wake tells the story of Mina McCreery. Twenty years ago, Mina’s sister Evelyn disappeared from the room they shared, with the case going on to become an international sensation that has taken the true crime world by storm. The original idea for the book was sparked during a phase in which Burr was frequenting online true crime forums. “A lot of people on there are amateur sleuths
trying to solve things,” she said. “I found them fascinating but also unsettling.” Wake was directly inspired by one specific thread where users were discussing the brother of a well-known murder victim. One poster said the brother didn’t have any social media, but did have a LinkedIn, and that his employer’s page was public, so they went through the pictures on there looking for him. “All I could think was how angry I would be if I was the brother. That’s how Mina was born,” Burr said. Having always loved the genre and consumed it extensively, it was never Burr’s agenda to become a crime-fiction writer. “I got this idea and when I set out to write this story, in putting together the outline and breaking the story, that’s when it became clear it was going to be a crime-fiction novel,” she said. Having lived in Canberra for 12 years now, Burr is planning to relocate with her family to northern Victoria. She’s greatly appreciative of the resources available to writers in Canberra, which “punches well above its weight”. “I think that Canberra for a regional city is
really well set up to support writers; there are a lot of regional centres where it’s a lot more difficult.” She did, however, acknowledge that as a professional author she’s more and more regularly having to travel to Sydney and Melbourne. “There’s a notable difference moving into the professional writer space; there’s a lot of need to travel to those cities to access resources.” A full-time public servant, mother, and author, balancing all her duties requires deft time management and strategy. Taking an hour a night to write once her daughter is asleep, Burr puts her disciplined approach down to being so pressed for time. “It actually kind of helped to have so little time, because if I’m going to get an hour it has to be butt on the chair, hands on the keyboard getting it done. It was a real motivator not to muck around.” Shelley Burr’s debut novel Wake will be available for sale in Australia from 27 April; hacehtte.com.au - Denholm Samaras

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) was a Harry Potter franchise spinoff, introducing the adult Newt Scamander; a gentle naturalist English ‘magizoologist’ wizard out of his element on the streets of New York in 1926. Decades and many miles away from the story of Harry Potter, the sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald solidified the enterprise as a back-door direct prequel. This
entry further concentrates setting up the Harry Potter mythology, relegating Newt further down the ranking, with Dumbledore and Grindelwald taking the main stage. The writing failings of Harry Potter are on full display here: an important element is introduced only to return at the movie’s end, with the intervening story serving as waffling filler. Despite the large cast of characters, few are needed. With characters’ development being continuously backtracked, it is clear there is no overarching plot for the series. Verdict: A beautiful production with great actors, the nonsensical script treads water, offering no real conclusion nor advancement as there are two more entries on the way (the scripts yet to be written)! 2.5 stars. Book talk This week, Jeff Popple reviews three thrilling books to keep you entertained over the Easter long weekend. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson Michael Joseph, $32.99
Benjamin Stevenson’s Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone is the most original crime novel you will read this year. Revolving around an unusual family reunion in the Snowy Mountains, it is a funny and clever novel, that plays homage to the classic British murder mystery. In between the rising body count and the revelation of old family secrets, Stevenson’s reluctant sleuth, Ernie Cunningham, amusingly reflects on the rules of detective fiction and offers plenty of witty asides. A cross between Agatha Christie, Daniel Craig’s Knives Out and Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, it is the ideal Easter weekend read.

Three Assassins by Kotaro Isaka Harvill Secker, $32.99
Also offering some wild, off-beat fun is Kotaro Isaka’s Three Assassins. Isaka’s Bullet Train proved a popular success last year, and the movie version of it, starring Brad Pitt, is due to hit cinema screens shortly. Three Assassins takes a similar approach to Bullet Train and is a fast-paced tale of vengeance. Suzuki used to be an everyday sort of guy, until the murder of his wife. Now he has left behind his life as a teacher and finds himself in a deadly battle with three oddball assassins and the Japanese gang responsible for his wife’s death. An enjoyable, high-octane read.

The Foot Soldiers by Gerald Seymour Hodder & Stoughton, $32.99
More serious thrills are provided by veteran British writer Gerald Seymour. The Foot Soldiers is a slow burn of a thriller that centres on the defection of a low level Soviet spy. The agent does not possess any startling secrets, but his defection sets in place a deadly Russian operation and reveals the presence of a ‘mole’ in MI6. Nondescript Jonas Merrick is called in from his caravan holiday to work through the possible suspects and finds himself involved in dangerous battle of wits. The pace is occasionally slow, but the tension is high throughout, and the book builds to a terrific climax. Recommended.

Canberra Circus Festival rolls into town A brand-new addition to the capital’s cultural calendar, the inaugural Canberra Circus Festival will roll up and into town later this month, bringing in some of Australia’s best and brightest circus performers. Designed as an entertainment spectacle featuring 15 contemporary circus performances from 10 companies, the Festival will also act as a professional development opportunity for the next generation of performers. Youth circus troupes and young circus artists from around the country will converge on Canberra to train, rehearse, and perform alongside Australia’s elite circus professionals. Professional circus artists and coaches from across Australia will gather at Lions Youth Haven in Kambah - the site of the Festival - to offer masterclasses in a range of circus

specialties to the next generation. Festival director and Warehouse Circus artistic director, Tom Davis, told Canberra Weekly it would serve to boost the visibility of circus while simultaneously celebrating the capital’s vibrant performing arts scene. “Warehouse has been present in Canberra for over 30 years and we have really good circus tours here all the time,” he said. “We’re bringing some amazing artists to Canberra, some of whom grew up here. “We wanted to really celebrate not just a festival in Canberra, but what Canberra brings to the national arts scene … it’s just big enough to have a lot on, but small enough that the arts scene all knows one another.” After getting his start with Warehouse Circus at 14, prior to the pandemic, Canberra born-and-raised
circus performer Pablo Latona had spent the previous 25 years touring the world. Describing himself as a “funsmith” rather than a traditional circus performer, Latona’s brand of absurd physical comedy has travelled well right throughout Europe and Africa. Having been grounded here in his hometown for the past two years due to Covid, Latona has kept busy through commissions, creating several participatory art experiences across town. Returning to the stage for the Festival, he will perform his popular solo physical comedy in The Ridiculous Show. “It’s definitely not traditional circus … I do absurd physical comedy to make people feel good,” he said. “It’s celebrating the absurdity of life together, is really the vibe of the

5 products for lazy girl 1 makeup
However, for lazy makeup lovers, a little is all you need for a boost on the go-go-go.
There are many arguments on what constitutes as “lazy” makeup. Everyone has a different skill level, a different age when they first started wearing makeup, and of course, different skin types. This is a love letter to those who love the bare minimum. For the patrons of two minutes on the bus to work/in the work bathroom before going out, kind of makeup. That means: Nothing that can’t be thrown in your purse before you walk out the door; Nothing that needs to be applied with a brush or makeup wipe on hand; Nothing that requires a YouTube tutorial. For beauty veterans, this may simply come down to “nothing.”
Most of the “laziness” here is in the easily achievable peace of mind. For months, I’ve been chucking Ethique lipstick, $29, the Ethique stick ethiqueworld.com moisturiser in my bag for when I need a quick refresh, then chucking the biodegradable tube straight in the compost bin when I’m done. Now they’ve released a line of highly pigmented lipsticks and I am loving it.
2
Lip stains are a gateway product to lazy makeup. You cannot beat how natural a lip stain looks in comparison to
gloss or lipstick, plus you can eat and touch your face without it getting everywhere. My sister bought me Benetint for Christmas two years ago and I’m yet to leave the cult.
3
An old adage of lazy makeup is to skip out on mascara, and just curl your lashes instead. A good eyelash curler will have a soft, plush rubber cushion, and Shiseido eyelash should be easy curler, $33, Mecca to use. If it’s too tricky, chances are it’s not a great fit for your eye shape.
4 Benefit’s Benetint, $33, Myer
I cannot decide between stick blush, and cheek & lip tint. Both are super handy, and my absolute

go-to when I’m looking a bit grey at the end of the day. While on the pricey side, Anastasia Beverly Hills stick blush has a nifty built-in Lanolips Baby Rose brush and a little Gold 101 Ointment, goes a long way. $19, lanolips.com.au Lanolips 101 ointment has a cult following for its versatility, and the fact that it doesn’t leave your mouth feeling dry.
5
Tinted sunscreen or BB cream is a pillar of the Lazy Girl makeup community. Easy on the skin, and SPF inclusive, this is what I use under my eyes on “extra effort” days. The perfect BB cream brand really depends on if they have your skin tone available. Maybelline BB creams are highly reviewed as affordable all-rounders.

ocal skin clinic, Healthy Skin Solutions says it’s never too late to treat a skin disorder that keeps coming back. They offer a wide variety of treatments to explore, whether that be for eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, hives, or bacterial infections. As the weather gets colder, Practitioner Luke Clews says a large number of Canberrans will experience flareups at this time. “It’s a very common trigger, and we see a lot of it from April to October.” If you’ve been suffering from seasonal skin flareups for months, years, or even decades, chances are you’ve tried every cream under the sun. “Our average patient suffers

from chronically inflamed skin, which means that in the past, they were constantly at the GP, where they’d be recommended a cream to ease their symptoms,” says Luke. “At best, creams are like a band-aid. You might have relief for an hour, a day, maybe even a few days, but they don’t treat the issue. You may try stronger and stronger creams, developing a tolerance while the risk of side effects goes up.” Healthy Skin Solutions focuses on long-term remission, treating the entire person, not just the symptoms. “If you’re sick of doing the same old thing, and getting the same results, come to us. We aim to get our patients to the point where they don’t need creams.”
At Healthy Skin Solutions, the first step for holistic healing is an hour-long initial appointment, where your treatment is tailored to
every aspect of your health. You can book online at healthyskinsolutions.com.au or call the clinic on 6295 6040.

Blue Sky House reno revitalises 1960s cottage A charming cottage nestled within a leafy, tree-filled garden in a quiet cul-de-sac is where you’ll discover the Blue Sky House. Originally built in the 1960s, the renovation transforming it into a light-filled contemporary family home, while retaining its authentic appeal, is nothing short of wondrous. WITH HOME EDITOR, ABBEY HALTER
There was a driving desire to retain all existing spaces while repurposing certain areas in the cottage. This strategy allowed a more spacious environment and a stronger landscape connection to organically unfold. Designed by Rob Henry Architects in Canberra, Blue Sky House has been entered into the ACT Architecture Awards for its innovative renovation and revitalisation of an original 1960s home. Establishing a northerly facing light was imperative for the family. Success was achieved through designing as a reverse truss – the roofline’s new wing provided generous amounts of northerly light to spill into the deeper spaces of the home through clerestory windows. Cottage character with a contemporary twist is the epitome
of Blue Sky House, and linking elements effortlessly flow one room into the next. All the bedrooms were fully renovated, while the bathroom and laundry were left untouched. The kitchen is the true heart of the home, and the new northerly deck gives ample opportunity to revel in the picturesque garden that is immaculately landscaped. “Rob nailed the brief. He has delivered, in a small space, something that is beautiful and incredibly functional for our family,” the owner said. “We love the light living room, we love the connection to the garden, and the kitchen is perfect. “It’s not a big house, but all the spaces work. From the street, it is still the same cottage that drew us here, but inside, Rob has transformed it into
something unexpected and special.” To accentuate the cottage’s original character, both the exterior and interior material palettes were specifically and meticulously chosen to draw out the unique features of the home.
A whole lot of love went into designing Blue Sky House, and with thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and retention of original character, it has become a project to marvel at and, more importantly, a well-loved family home. canberraweekly.com.au

Mid-century classic Reid 20 Euree Street A mid-century classic Canberra red brick duplex, 20 Euree Street has been home to the current owner since 1954. Raising her children and grandchildren in the home, every wall and room is filled with history, memories, and stories of Canberra. Situated in one of the most historic streets in the capital, this unspoilt duplex preserves the ambience of the time, constructed around 1953. Nestled between magnificent Blue Atlas Cedar trees approaching their century, this gem is located amongst some of the earliest homes in Canberra. Agent Melissa Martin-Smith says she and her partner Ziggy Kugel love the character the home offers, and at every turn there is a
different detail. “An eminent feature of the property is the well maintained and established gardens which have been lovingly cared for over the years – they’re enchanting. There are many attributes that make this property a fantastic home, from the updated architecturally designed kitchen to the four generously sized bedrooms,” says Melissa. “The formal and informal living spaces additionally make this home very functional and it holds an abundance of potential for the purchaser to alter or live in it as is. We feel the location also speaks for itself – its proximity to local shops, the city, and historical landmarks
such as St John’s Anglican Church makes it a standout. “The convenience of city life while feeling at ease in the beautiful tree-lined streets would have to be a highlight for us.” With climbing roses adorning the arbour, creating a delightful sitting area in the leafy backyard, along with mature deciduous trees, camellias, spring bulbs, daphne and lavender, this historic home is truly an oasis.

ACT to implement real estate licensing reforms The Geoscience Australia HQ property has been launched for international sale and is expected to smash ACT property price records. Image supplied.
Geoscience Australia HQ in Symonston expected to fetch over $370m An International Expressions of Interest campaign for Geoscience Australia HQ in Symonston has been launched, and the sale is expected to break current ACT price records. Colliers and JLL Australia have put the iconic Canberra building up for international sale and say the 101 Jerrabomberra Avenue block in Symonston will be a momentous sale for the Territory. Colliers State Chief Executive ACT, Paul Powderly, said they expect “significant interest from national and international investors and that the final sale price will be in excess of $370 million, which would be a record for the ACT”. “This interest will be driven by the fact this property is strategically located, 100 per cent occupied by the Commonwealth of Australia, and is underpinned by an ‘AAA’ secure, long-term income stream with fixed annual escalations and a 10-year WALE (weighted average lease expiry). “With a net income of over $26 million and a rare double net lease arrangement, 101 Jerrabomberra Avenue presents a singularly outstanding opportunity.” Geoscience Australia HQ sits on a 160,378sqm site, and has seen upwards of $7 million in capital 38

expenditure. The 32,659sqm facility includes on-site amenities such as 652 parking bays, a childcare centre, end of trip facilities, public gallery, research library, café, and gym. Colliers Director of Capital Markets and Investment Services, Matthew Winter, said “the Canberra office market offers a very attractive value proposition from a yield and capital value perspective”. “Canberra’s prime yield range is higher than other major Australian markets and in comparison to other Australian CBDs and global cities, Canberra has lower capital values.” Purpose built by the Commonwealth in 1997, Geoscience Australia HQ is considered to be a “renowned building of national significance”. JLL Managing Director, Tim Mutton, said that “given the scientific nature of the tenant, the building was designed to be highly efficient and deliver a first-class working environment”. “The property provides a mix of high-quality office, specialised laboratory and storage accommodation across two interconnected buildings,” he said. Geoscience HQ is being offered for sale by way of International Expressions of Interest, which close 4pm on Thursday 12 May.
Real estate licensing in the ACT is finally set to catch up with the rest of the country, with reforms announced by the ACT Government aiming to close a licensing loophole. ACT Attorney-General, Shane Rattenbury MLA, said the reforms “deliver on the National Real Estate Training Program which is being implemented across Australia”. “It creates a minimum standard of qualification for all of those who are working in the real estate industry. This gives consumers, people who are either renting or buying or selling a home, real confidence to know that their real estate professionals have met certain training qualifications that are standard across the industry. “There are a range of transitional provisions in the legislation, realising that many real estate agents already have qualifications and a great deal of experience, and they’ll be able to move across. We do want to make sure the ACT is not a place where you can get into the industry without qualification and then move across the border; that certainly is a really important part of this national reform.” The new Fair Trading and Other Justice Legislation Amendment Bill 2022, introduced to the Legislative Assembly on Thursday 7 April, proposed to: • divide licences into two classes so that agents who act as licenseesin-charge of a place of business must undertake extra qualifications and have at least two years’ industry experience; • introduce a specific licence for land auctioneers and making it an offence for anyone not holding a land auctioneer’s licence to conduct land auctions; • phase out the unqualified salesperson registration pathway
to ensure all industry participants hold a minimum level of qualifications; • introduce new offences to prevent assistant agents from withdrawing trust money or entering into agency agreements; and • provide the Commissioner for Fair Trading with the power to determine the qualification and experience requirements for agent licences and assistant agent registrations. The Real Estate Institute of the ACT (REIACT) have been lobbying for these reforms for some years and have criticised the government as having wrongly represented the changes. REIACT CEO Michelle Tynan said the real estate industry were pushing for the reforms from the ACT Government, and she’s “disappointed” how they’ve been portrayed to the public. “We were a bit disappointed in Shane’s [Rattenbury] media release. The Institute played a large role in the reforms, and have been lobbying for them since 2018,” Ms Tynan said. “The ACT was the last state or territory to conform to the national training package. It’s not about education standards – ours are high; it’s about entry levels. “This new regulation keeps the back door shut. It’s a little bit disappointing how the reforms have been worded by the government. The ACT’s education standard in the profession is the highest in the country, and these reforms don’t change that. “This has never been about education and the standards of current agents; it’s to protect consumers within the loophole in the old standards.”

The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. Tuggeranong Southpoint is only five minutes’ drive away for more substantial shopping.
Room to move Nobody wants to downsize to something poky or impractical. Marigal Gardens offers generous and practical floorplans that are designed for relaxed and comfortable living. And as a resident’s needs change, their home can change too. No matter what the budget, or lifestyle, there are plenty of options to suit. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. PLAYING THE FLUTE The flute is my main (and favourite) instrument. I fell in love with playing flute as a kid and have found the perfect outlet in my music for The Beanies. The flute can sound refined, sweet, jazzy, or playful; this versatility makes it perfect for our group’s diverse musical flavours.
SONDHEIM MUSICALS Like every theatre composer, I have been deeply influenced by Sondheim. The care and thought he put into every word and note is something I try to emulate in every project. I wrote to Sondheim twice. He took the time to write back personally – twice. That speaks volumes to me.

EMUS
My favourite things
James Court
I mean, there’s no contest. They’re the best thing. They do goofy dances, they’re friendly, they whistle to each other, they go swimming just for fun. They’re just out there living their best lives. We should all be a little bit more like the emu. What an inspiration.
Composer, multi-instrumentalist, and music wizard for The Beanies Raised in Canberra, James Court is best known for his work as the ‘Music Wizard’ of award-winning children’s musical group, The Beanies, having composed and produced each of their seven albums since the group’s inception in 2016. His work on the second Beanies album, Imagination Station, helped earn the group both a 2018 Australian Podcast Award and a 2019 ARIA nomination. In addition to his work with The Beanies, James has written music for three musicals, several podcasts, and numerous short films, including Buddy and Therapy: The Musical, both winning the Best Original Music award at the Lights, Canberra, Action! short film festival. James is currently studying composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
ARTIE Artie is my brother’s kelpie. She is also the best thing. Look at her. She knows she’s cute. She’s too pure for this world. Look at her again. You’re welcome.
THE BEANIES’ MUSIC I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention where to find our music! We have seven albums of very groovy (and very silly) music for kids available now on Spotify and Apple Music. We’re also bringing our musical – The Beanies’ Egg-straordinary Day – to The Playhouse in August! canberraweekly.com.au
