Local team taking on overseas travel dental market
thursday 12 may 2022
contents Last Friday night, I was among 500 people privileged to attend the annual Lifeline Canberra gala that raises funds for their 13 11 14 crisis line. We heard from inspiring CEO Carrie-Ann Leeson, who leads what has become the biggest Lifeline call centre in Australia. That’s because Lifeline Canberra has been able to train and retain more crisis supporters due largely to the compassionate, dedicated and strategic leadership team, the ACT’s exceptional rates of volunteerism, and the local community’s generosity. On a busy day pre-pandemic, Lifeline Canberra would answer 2,500 calls; since the pandemic, there haven’t been fewer than 3,500 calls a day. Sometimes, they are able to save lives; at other times, theirs will be the last voice a caller ever hears. The only way I could imagine a world without Lifeline is to imagine a world without suffering; a utopia that doesn’t exist. This past week, I’m grateful for a heart-warming Mother’s Day brunch and long phone chats with my mum, many years of service to CW from my son Denholm who’s moved to Brisbane, a long walk in the sunshine, delightful company and mouthwatering food at Monster Kitchen & Bar’s five-course Magnificent Mushrooms degustation, an uplifting night at the Canberra Lifeline gala and the tireless dedication of their small team of staff and big team of volunteers who keep Lifeline’s crisis line open 24/7. Thank you for being remarkable human beings.

Original ‘Brazen Hussy’ reflects on war and feminism Canberra resident and founding member of Australia’s women’s liberation movement, Biff Ward, 78, chats with CW journalist, Anja de Rozario, 23, about feminism, the Vietnam War, and the new generation’s continuing march for justice. When founding member of Australia’s women’s liberation movement, Biff Ward (78), stood in front of thousands at the 2021 March4Justice, she said she never thought she’d live to see the day. “That was true,” she smiled into her teacup, as we sat among her many bookshelves and family photos. “I really thought it would happen somewhere off in the future, long after I was dead. “Two generations; 50 years. That’s how long change takes.” From the original ‘Brazen Hussies,’ the group of Australian feminists who defied the status quo in the 1960s and 1970s, Biff reflected on those initial moments the patriarchy became visible to them, and seemingly no one else. “We were seeing the world one way, then we had a meeting with other women and suddenly we were seeing it differently. “It was enormous. And hard to convey to people who never had that experience, never seen sexism, who were just accepting the world how it was. “It was like we entered a new world, and it was only us. So we were regarded as crazy; every time we were mentioned in the press we were just completely ridiculed. “But nothing stopped us.” Brazen Hussies was the name coined for the ground-breaking documentary film by Catherine Dwyer, which Biff starred in last year. “What I love is that the name of the film has become our identifier. I used to say I was a 1970s Women’s 4

Liberationist. Quite a mouthful and some young women had never heard of us. They thought there were suffragettes, and then them,” said Biff. “I love that we’ve now got a name. On the day of March4Justice they announced, ‘Now we have with us a Brazen Hussy!’ and everyone screamed!” “But they didn’t call us that at the time. No, no. They called us hairy armpit women’s libbers. They called us ugly, too ugly to rape. There was incredible put-down, all the time. “When I look back on what I’m most proud of, it’s not as an individual. That period of feminism invented the word ‘sexism’; the word ‘sexual harassment’. It put domestic violence and rape on the map. [It said] these are urgent issues that we have to deal with,” she said. “I think body integrity is fundamental. If you can’t feel safe in your own body, then all the other issues – childcare, equal pay – feel further away. For me, I have to be safe here. And we’re still fighting for that.” Biff’s voice wavered, as she remembered the faces looking up at her at March4Justice. “I get tearful when I remember how that animated everyone that day. “All women know this. Even the Margaret Thatchers of the world who insist ‘that’s never happened to me,’ in their bones, they know it. They’ve thought ‘I mustn’t walk down that dark lane’.” She smiled, wiped her eye. “Following the 1970s movement, a lot of women went into the bureaucracy,

education, created the women’s studies courses we know today. So, by the late ‘80s, from my perspective, it had all sort of quietened down. “There wasn’t a movement anymore, and it looked like nothing much was happening. But something was happening. I look at young women now, and they’ve really thought about these issues and have all this new language. I think that groundwork we did in the ‘70s and ‘80s has been seeding away, and now the seeds have grown into a big tree.” Biff remains close with the founding members of the feminist group. “Starting back in the ‘90s, some of my sisters used to say, ‘How do we pass on the baton? Young women aren’t active.’ I always thought it’s not our right to pass on the baton; it’s their life and their world.” I asked Biff if she feels comfortable with my generation in the driver’s seat. Her answering smile was warming. “Yes! I trust young women completely. They’ll make mistakes, we all do. But the fire that was in the women last year… I know you’ll do everything as best you can.” Following her memoir, In My Mother’s Hands, Biff’s miles marched in the Vietnam War protests led to writing her latest book, The Third
Chopstick, written from the candid accounts of veterans, and her own relationship with Vietnam. “I was an extremely passionate protester against the Vietnam War, in the five years leading up to Women’s Liberation. When the war ended in ‘75, most of the protesters moved on, and I had too, but some part stayed in me. “I just had this pull to Vietnam, this great desire to see it, to smell it and feel it. It was an out-of-body experience, the only one I’ve ever had in my life.” Biff has been to Vietnam 15 times to date and calls it her second home. “The war lives on there in ways that it doesn’t for us. Not even for the veterans. It lives on in terms of their family histories and the people who died. With three million dead, everyone has lost someone.” When asked what the one message she hopes readers will take away from the book, Biff’s answer was clearcut. “War is f*cked. I hope that the whole book shows how utterly needless it was. “And I hope it shows that we’re all connected. When we were young, it felt like the protesters and soldiers were in two different camps, and now that we’ve gotten older and more sensible, it’s very clear to me we were all connected.” - Anja de Rozario
The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. Tuggeranong Southpoint is only five minutes’ drive away for more substantial shopping.
Room to move Nobody wants to downsize to something poky or impractical. Marigal Gardens offers generous and practical floorplans that are designed for relaxed and comfortable living. And as a resident’s needs change, their home can change too. No matter what the budget, or lifestyle, there are plenty of options to suit. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. Making the most of every day, your way Marigal Gardens is a thriving community with wonderful facilities and a lifeaffirming vibe that residents love. There are organised activities for all tastes should you choose to pursue a long-held passion or try something new. For more unstructured pleasures, catch up for a coffee, indulge in a gym workout, take a swim or enjoy a relaxing sundowner at the bar. For the young at heart there is Kambah Adventure Playground right next door.
Feeling safe and secure Safety and security are frequently top priorities for buyers when it comes to choosing their new home. With staff onsite 24/7, help or assistance is never far away. And should travel beckon, our team and neighbours make sure a home is well looked after, so residents can take off with confidence. While buyers focus on lots of different reasons when making their decision, most come to a similar conclusion when they have finally settled in. Gay, one of our residents sums it up neatly: “I wish I’d made the move sooner.” If you’re thinking of downsizing and joining our wonderful community, the final stage of Marigal Gardens brand new apartments are now on sale. Green Labor ACT government still throwing elderly tenants out of their homes I was dismayed to find the local Green/Labor government is still proceeding with its heartless and unnecessary plan to forcibly remove longstanding, and in most cases elderly, public housing tenants from their homes of 30 to 40 years, in many instances without even listening to their concerns and wishes. I also find it concerning that the local Green federal candidates have been silent on this issue. I doubt if that would be the case if there was a Liberal local government in office. Recently, I caught up with an old Narrabundah school friend who lives next door to an elderly housing tenant in Griffith who is being moved against her wishes. My friend’s son has helped the old lady get in contact with a local law firm now representing about eight housing tenants in a class action. I understand that a community law centre is also starting a class action. My understanding is that once someone is involved in an action before the courts/ACAT, it effectively puts any action on the government’s part on hold until the legal

action has been concluded. So, it would be sensible for all tenants who don’t want to move to contact ACTCOSS, whom I’m sure can help direct them in the right legal direction. As I said in an earlier article, surely now is the time for the ACT Government to stop harassing these tenants, move those who wish to move, and leave the rest to live out their days in peace. It’s not like the value of the properties is going to go down over the next five to 10 years. On another note, I went to meet the federal candidates for Canberra, Bean, and the Senate at the Southern Cross Club Woden last Wednesday. Whilst somewhat underwhelming, I was impressed with the sincerity of them all. A few performed very well. The candidate for the UAP Sean Conway made a lot of sense in relation to paying back the debt, and Liberal candidate for Bean Jane Hiatt also spoke well. Labor’s David Smith and Liberal Slade Minson put in solid performances. It was good to see most of the minor candidates come along and have their

say, as well as the main contenders for the Senate minus our two sitting senators. Out of the three main contenders for the second Senate spot, I thought David Pocock made the most sense. Kim Rubenstein was learned, and I don’t think Greens Senate candidate Tjanara Goreng Goreng would win too many supporters (especially amongst her own party) when she opined that all Australians should be paid the same wage. Still, I admired her zeal. In many respects, there was not a whole lot of difference between the candidates on many issues. There were about 100 people in the audience, which was not bad for a cold, rainy night in Canberra. Grant helps Women’s Adventure ACT boost ‘hike-ablity’ A ‘Hike-able’ project that helps senior and differently abled women get outdoors and active has seen Women’s Adventure ACT awarded the Mable Community Grant of over $19,000. The volunteer community group runs at least one organised hike every weekend, open for Canberran women to join. Among them, Taryn Dickens, a vision-impaired athlete, who recently won gold in Australian Masters Track Cycling, “found her people” in Women’s Adventure ACT. Turning 40 next month, Taryn has only known about her impaired vision for four years. “For a little while, I felt like my world was ending. I had no idea what I was going to do. I’m a fitter and turner by trade, always worked a lot with my hands.” Taryn moved to Canberra in a

shift towards office work, and to escape the overwhelming Sydney traffic. Diagnosed with cone dystrophy, she’s been able to adapt to her complete loss of colour vision, with the help of her guide dog Gigi. “I’m lucky in a sense that I didn’t know anyone in Canberra when I moved here, I got to restart my story. No one knew me before I started losing my vision.” She first encountered Women’s Adventure ACT on Facebook. “On my first night, I wasn’t sure if I should tell people straight away about my disability or try to keep it quiet. “I’ve never met any blind people, no one in my family’s got a disability. I didn’t know how to approach anything… but the girls were just fantastic, and God, have I gone on some adventures since then.” Taryn’s repertoire of adventures
with Women’s Adventure ACT includes a seven-day kayaking expedition in Hinchinbrook, the Simpson Desert Ultra which she’ll take her second run at in June, canyoning, and camping trips. Plans for the Mabel Grant include new equipment, leadership training, and safety gear that will help the group further support all ages and abilities. Gigi comes on every trip, helping Taryn on bush walks, and with mental health. “She sticks right by me. If I have a night terror when we’re camping, I have a touch light and she’ll turn that on.” The two share a double swag out in the bush since it’s become “a little too cosy” in the single. “I feel a lot safer in the outdoors with her.” Taryn and Gigi found their tribe

Leave STEM research to men? This Canberra woman doesn’t think so “I believe Dr Cathy Foley, Australia’s Chief Scientist, said it best in her National Press Club address last year: ‘Simply put, diversity of ideas and experience equals better results’,” says Claire Harris, a Canberra woman in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), and founder of Innovate Communicate. After studying a Bachelor of Environmental Science and then Postgraduate Diploma in Science Communication, she decided to take the leap of faith to build her own business and foster an understanding between the STEM and non-STEM worlds. Recently, Ms Harris was surprised but pleased to learn she was the recipient of a grant from YWCA
Canberra, designed to boost small businesses owned by women and non-binary people in the ACT. “The innovation grant from YWCA’s Great Ydeas Small Grants program, supported by the Canberra Innovation Network, is going to help me to build the Impact program for Women in STEM,” she said, explaining her project encompasses women, girls, and non-binary people. While she may remember her own experience in STEM fondly, Ms Harris has become a confidante for her colleagues across the industry who have felt undervalued. “I talk to women all the time who say they feel invisible, that their expertise is being ignored. I started to see more of this happening as I got
older, and I heard from my friends and people I’d never met before in STEM who have had that experience,” she said. Ms Harris applauds the pockets of industry that have been doing “fantastic work” to diversity their STEM workplaces, but says there is still “significant opportunity” in Canberra for collaboration. “There are lots of passionate, smart, and super keen kids and teens out there who can bring all their talent to solve these big problems, and it comes down to the fact they just don’t have the opportunity,” she said. Her bottom line? The more diverse STEM workplaces are, the more successful they’ll be. “The main overarching comment

I want to make is that STEM is just like all other fields. It’s better if it represents our community in gender, identity, sexuality, age, cultural backgrounds,” Ms Harris said. - Abbey Halter

Affordable dental implants Local team taking on overseas travel dental market
T
ravel dental care had seen a huge surge in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The promise of pearly white smiles with flights and accommodation included, has had quite the allure to the enterprising traveller. With borders now opening, some pitfalls surround dental travel. Leif Svennson, Clinical Director at Affordable Dentures and Implants in Phillip, says since the pandemic, he has seen a rise in Aussies opting for local dental treatment. Local clinics like Affordable Dentures and Implants help Aussies by offering competitive pricing for their dental implant treatments. “Being transparent, building trust with patients, and understanding all their dental needs, particularly with complex treatments is not typically something you want to leave in the hands of someone you don’t know and may never see again,” says Leif.
People thinking of doing an overseas dental escape are generally seeking dental implant surgery or high cosmetic treatment such as crowns, bridges, and veneers. These can mean hefty treatment costs even for those privately insured in Australia. Some things to consider before opting to do complex dental treatment overseas:
1
Who are you seeing? Misleading marketing can be common amongst overseas dental practices. Booking a 5-star hotel package (or even a 5-star ‘looking’ practice) does not tell you whether the practitioner has the necessary training to perform the procedure. Whereas local dentists in Australia must adhere to stringent and heavily regulated training and hygiene requirements.
2
Smile subjectivity Cosmetic dental treatments are often geographically subjective. This means, for example, in East
With improved technologies such as digital scanners and guided surgery, Affordable Dentures and Implants now provide more affordable treatment prices locally, without compromising implant selection and treatment procedures.
Asia, what is perceived to be a beautiful smile is not necessarily the same as in Australia. Where some countries love big buck front teeth and unnatural ‘fridge’ white teeth colours, other cultures like small virtually invisible looking front teeth. “It is especially critical when working with your front six cosmetic teeth that you are able to spend the time you need with your dentist to ensure they can give you the smile you want. Time and
communication are key,” says Dr Garth Jones, Implant Surgeon at Affordable Dentures and Implants in Phillip.
3
Good treatments can take time Dental implant treatments can take time. For example, it can take three to six months for a dental implant to heal properly with the bone. A several-week trip overseas for dental implants does not allow for
Dr Garth Jones advises Aussies to leave holidays as holidays – pain-free and less risk to their dental health.
this timeline; the overseas dental packages are generally for a much shorter period. When asked about rapid implant treatments, Dr Jones’ response was, “You can’t cheat biology; the body needs time to heal.” There are increased risks when rushing to complete implant treatment and success rates are decreased. Time is your best friend after implant surgery.
4
Can you enjoy a holiday if you’ve just had probing and drilling in your mouth? The façade of dental tourism and attractive ‘5 star’ dental packages
takes away from the possible pain and recovery involved when you have had a tooth (or teeth) pulled out or an implant placed into your bone. Is it really a holiday if you’re in pain and can’t eat as you please? This is another reason why more and more Aussies are choosing to do their complex dental procedures in Australia.
5
What if something goes wrong with the new ‘overseas’ smile? Your local dentist or implant surgeon will more than likely be very cautious before intervening with
complex dental treatment that has been undertaken overseas. There are several reasons for this, with the main one being that they may not agree with the approach or positioning of the implants in the bone. They may also not be sure what type of implants were used or be concerned about taking on the risk of potential complications from implants they did not place. If, for example, the surgeon cannot access the necessary parts for that implant brand (as different branded implants may have fittings that are not common), you may not be able to do rectification work if it is required.
6
The price Let’s be frank, the decision to
do overseas dental work generally comes down to price. This certainly cannot be overlooked despite the risk factors listed above. With improved technologies such as digital scanners and guided surgery like those used by Dr Jones and Leif at Affordable Dentures and Implants, Aussie practices have been able to provide more affordable treatment prices locally, without compromising implant selection and treatment procedures. For more information, you can visit Affordable Dentures and Implants at 65 Colbee Court, Phillip, or call 02 6190 8828 for a free consultation. Leave your overseas holidays as holidays … knowing they will be pain-free!

Promises to upgrade AIS Last month, the Liberals announced an $11.4 million refurbishment for the AIS Arena, Canberra’s largest indoor venue; this week, Labor promised $15 million to upgrade and reopen the building, which has been closed since 2020. The AIS Arena has been Canberra’s premier indoor sporting and concert venue for 40 years, but needed safety and facility upgrades needed before it could safely reopen, Senator for the ACT Katy Gallagher, Alicia Payne MP, and Catherine King MP, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, said in a statement on Tuesday. The project would upgrade fire

safety, seating, lighting, toilets, and other facilities, and improve amenity across the precinct. In April, Liberal Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja announced funding to fix lighting, fire safety systems, lifts, mechanical services, and electrical systems, and to improve and replace seating so that the AIS Arena could reopen in 2023. It has been closed since 2020, and used as a mass vaccination hub since last year. Independent Senate candidate David Pocock, a contender for Senator Seselja’s seat, noted this was the first time the facility had “any serious money spent on it” since 2016.
CIT opens EV workshop Canberra’s first training program for electric and hydrogen vehicle mechanics is set to begin with the opening of a dedicated workshop at CIT Fyshwick. The facility houses the latest simulated training systems and allows students to safely learn an in-demand trade on high voltage electric, hybrid, and fuel-cell drives on light and heavy vehicles from up to 20 different auto manufacturers. CIT is developing a new course to train Canberra’s first EV apprentices under a new Certificate III in Electrical Vehicle Technology in 2023. More than 160
people already expressed interest in up-skilling in electric vehicle safety and maintenance across a variety of programs, including the apprenticeship. Leanne Cover, CEO of CIT, said the Institute is working with industry to co-design training in new and emerging industries such as renewable energy. “We have worked closely with Tesla and other manufacturers to ensure CIT’s electric-vehicle training for both light and heavy vehicles is cutting-edge to meet local skills needs now and in the future,” she said.

CSO presents Miracles in the Age of Reason Conductor Benjamin Bayl considers Jean-Philippe Rameau the greatest composer of dance music until Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. “A fairly bold claim to make,” he admits – but Canberra audiences will have the chance to hear the 18th century Frenchman’s music in a CSO concert next week. Miracles in the Age of Reason, on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 May, should be a stellar concert. It also features a flute concerto by C.P.E. Bach written for Frederick the Great – and played by Emma Sholl on a 14-carat rose gold Burkart flute; one of Mozart’s last and greatest symphonies; and, as a counterpoint, a piece by 20th century Australian composer Richard Meale. “What ties all these four works together is that all the composers diverge from the status quo somehow,” Bayl explained. “They were able to take the road less travelled and succeed.” Rameau was the first composer ever described as ‘baroque’, a term applied now to music of the early 18th century. In the upcoming concert, Rameau is represented by a suite of dances from
his opera Platée (1745), a grotesque comedy about a vain, toad-like swamp nymph who believes Jupiter has fallen in love with her. The dances themselves exhibit elegance and playfulness, sophistication and irreverence, and end with a storm scene. “The rhythmic and harmonic daring that Rameau manages to put into them is something which certainly no other composer of that time was really able to match,” Bayl said. “It’s almost unbelievable to think Rameau wrote this music in the 1740s.” While there are plenty of violin and oboe concertos, flute concertos from the 18th century are unusual, Bayl notes. C.P.E. Bach (1714–88), son of the great Johann Sebastian, wrote his Flute Concerto in D minor for Frederick the Great, a noted flute player – but even the king found it challenging. The Sturm und Drang third movement (allegro di molto) work is “very fast and furious, and incredibly virtuosic for the flute”, Bayl said. Richard Meale’s Cantilena Pacifica belongs squarely to the 20th century: a peaceful song written for the death of his best friend from cancer. The work was a late substitution; originally, Bayl
planned to conduct Meale’s Lumen, a chamber piece that fits more into the Enlightenment theme, but there was no orchestral version. “It’s good to have an Australian work in the program, and there weren’t many Australian works from the 1780s to choose from!” The concert concludes with Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat (1788), which takes a turn towards more experimental ideas, instrumentation, and harmony, Bayl argues, ditching the oboes in favour of the clarinet – then a relatively new instrument – and ending suddenly, without the expected coda: “The mark of a composer who is extremely confident in his skills, and loves to tease or surprise his audiences.” Many of whom, in those days, were seldom attentive: “They were often sitting in their boxes, having a drink or some food – or heaven knows what else! Sometimes, the performance on the stage might have taken second place.” Not that there’s any danger of that in the CSO’s concert, with such a feast of innovative music. - Nick Fuller

sport Brumbies claim big win in NZ, Lolesio re-signs The Brumbies have enjoyed their best performance of the season, claiming an important 38-28 win over the Chiefs in New Zealand. It was the Brumbies’ fourth straight win, including three in a row against Kiwi sides, and has the Canberra team sitting second on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder
with three rounds to go. The Brumbies now return home to GIO Stadium for a blockbuster clash against the third placed Crusaders on Friday night 13 May. The good news continued to flow for Brumbies’ fans, with star flyhalf Noah Lolesio re-committing to the club until the end of 2024.
Frawley helps Raiders to win over Bulldogs Canberra five-eighth Matt Frawley inspired his side to a much-needed 14-4 win over the Bulldogs last Friday night, 6 May. Filling in for the suspended Jack Wighton, Frawley came up with the play of the night, selling two dummies and skipping through the defence to score a delightful try.
The win broke a five-match losing streak for the Raiders, with the only sour note a shoulder injury to club legend Jarrod Croker, who is expected to miss two to three weeks. The Raiders now head to Brisbane for Magic Round to take on the Cronulla Sharks on Sunday afternoon, 15 May.

Serves 4 450g beef or lamb mince 1 heaped tbsp tomato paste (concentrated purée) 1 heaped tbsp pine nuts, toasted 1 heaped tsp ground sumac 1 heaped tsp smoked paprika 3/4 tsp ground allspice 3/4 tsp fine sea salt
WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO
3 tbsp finely chopped parsley 4 large pita breads
Egg and bacon rougaille Serves 2 100g (3/4 cup) bacon lardons 1 onion, finely chopped 3cm ginger, peeled and minced (1 tbsp) 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 bird’s eye chilli, seeds in, finely chopped 1 tsp cumin seeds Small bunch thyme, leaves stripped 400g ripe tomatoes, chopped, or good tinned tomatoes 2–4 eggs
Add the onion and fry until well softened. Add the ginger, garlic, chilli, cumin, and thyme leaves and cook for a few minutes longer. Add the tomatoes and cook at a slow boil for about 20 minutes, squishing the tomatoes with the back of a spoon occasionally to break them down. The red should deepen a shade. Taste and balance the flavours with salt and a little sugar, if needed. Make dents in the sauce with the spoon and crack an egg into each one. Sprinkle each egg with a little salt and cover the pan with a lid (or a plate). Leave the eggs to steam for four to five minutes, until the whites are set, and the yolks are still runny.
Olive oil, for brushing Pomegranate molasses, to serve Mix together the minced meat, tomato paste, pine nuts, spices, salt, and parsley. Cut the pita breads down one side and spread the filling in each in a thin and even layer. Brush the outsides with olive oil. Heat a griddle pan to medium–high. Grill the pitas, pressing down with a spatula and flipping occasionally. A quarter turn in the pan will give you crisscross markings. They will probably take about eight to ten minutes in total, depending on your bread and how rare you like your meat. The pita should be well toasted, and the meat cooked to a juicy pink or well done.
Flatbreads and hot sauce, to serve
Scatter with coriander and serve with flatbreads and hot sauce, if you like.
Serve drizzled with pomegranate molasses, crunchy salad with tomatoes, herbs and perhaps a tahini dressing.
Put the lardons in a frying pan and set over a medium heat. Cook until the fat renders, then the bacon crisps.
Hot tip: Rougaille sauce, originating from Mauritius, can enliven seafood, salted fish, and sausages, too!

Canberra screenwriter helps represent her culture on silver screen An award-winning feature length Australian film with a close tie to Canberra will enjoy a one-week season at Dendy Canberra later this month. Canberra-based screenwriter and videographer, Shamini Singhal, had the opportunity to ply her trade on new multicultural romantic drama Get a Life, Alright!, that will screen at Dendy from 19 May. The film enjoyed its world premiere at The Australian High Commission International Film Festival in Singapore, also taking out the Hong Kong International Indie Film Festival’s best drama feature. Shamini, a precociously talented 24-year-old, told Canberra Weekly she was brought onto the project as a screenwriter to lend a level of cultural
authenticity to the work. Shamini had a connection to writer, director, and producer Joy Hopwood, having worked on her 2020 feature Rhapsody of Love as a camera operator. She joined pre-production in mid-late 2020 as writer and then got behind the camera when filming started in March 2021. “She didn’t want to write it by herself and wanted to bring that authentic perspective of being from a north Indian family,” Shamini said. “Having migrated to Australia myself and being in the media industry, I thought I could give that perspective to her.” Personally appointed by Joy, Shamini felt confident and at ease offering feedback on the project to
ensure her northern Indian culture was depicted accurately. “When it came to production design, writing, costumes, everything matters, so if I saw something in the script or on set, she really asked for my input in those places to make it look authentic, otherwise it’s just not believable and is kind of offensive,” Shamini said. “The very small things really mattered … It was really enjoyable, and we had a good working relationship.” Getting to be a part of an authentic representation of her culture on the silver screen was a satisfying experience for Shamini. “To be able to pull off something like that that’s rooted in middleclass Australia and in the sphere of

where she uncovered her love of cinematography. She then relocated to Canberra a year ago to work as an editor assistant at Wildbear Entertainment. Her first experience living in a smaller city, Shamini has greatly enjoyed the change of pace. “I surprisingly really liked that transition, and I had a great job to help me through it,” she said. “I feel like people, whenever they come to Canberra, automatically become nicer. “You can feel the difference, it might be small, but I really love the local culture … it’s very wholesome, I love it.” Get a Life, Alright! will screen at Dendy Canberra on 19-24 May; dendy.com.au - Denholm Samaras

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (M) Multiverse hopping America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) and a version of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) are on the run from a demon in the space between universes while searching for the Book of Vishanti. On our earth, our Doctor Strange attends the wedding of his ex-girlfriend Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). Soon however, America accidentally transports to this earth’s New York City with a tentacled terror in tow! Doctor Strange (2016) heralded a mystical change to the then Marvel Cinematic Universe, expanding the MCU’s reach into different dimensions with an Eastern flair. Here, audiences are taken into multiverses introduced in Spider-man: No Way Home, which themselves host alternative variations of heroes and
villians from the established MCU and some intellectual properties that have found their way home. Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead and Spider-Man trilogy) brings his horror-comedy flair to proceedings: extreme Dutch angels, fast crashzooms and swooping POVs, with a demonic presence throughout and more than a few nods to those pesky Deadites of yesteryear. While the movie recognises plot developments from No Way Home, Wandavision and Marvel TV’s What If? series, little is done to advance, or explore, our titular hero, while the character of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is completely regressed. It is a shame that, with multiple ways forward, the movie instead chooses to be a shoe-horned, fan-pleasing episode of the MCU as opposed to a bold continuation of the story of Stephen Strange. Verdict: A beautiful-looking muddle of madness. 2.5 stars. Viewed at Palace Cinemas. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

time out Hitting the road with Australian country icon Kasey Chambers, regional Queensland duo, Busby Marou, will play at the NCCC Royal Theatre on Saturday 28 May. Jeremy Marou sat down with CW to talk Canberra winters, the evolution of Busby Marou, and their new hit song, Everything Is Beautiful.
1
Where did the inspiration for your latest single Everything Is Beautiful come from? “Tom and I had lots of downtime writing with different people. We wrote with Tom Eggert, who’s a great young dude out of Brisbane, on a number of songs on the album. The song came together really easy, just like most of tracks on the album. We weren’t overthinking because it was in the middle of Covid, and we just wanted to make a positive song – the title speaks for itself.”
2
What’s it been like hanging with Kasey Chambers on tour? “Just the fact that we’re on the road again and

touring is so good! We had to cancel this tour two years ago, so it’s been a couple of years in the making now. “Kasey and her crew are so cool. We’ve been friends for long time now and I know at the end of the day its work, but jeez we have some fun!”
3
What’s your personal favourite song to sing live? “I’m not saying this because it’s the obvious answer but our live version of Everything Is Beautiful would be my favourite. We’ve only performed it a couple of times, but honestly, it’s so much fun to sing.”
4
How would you describe the evolution of Busby Marou’s style? “We’re a weird kind of band… it’s hard for people to try and describe us, and if I asked you for example what style are, it’s hard to hit that on the head! Our music has always evolved, and we try to theme every album so the songs sound similar.

Take 5 with Busby Marou Busby Marou have joined Kasey Chambers on an Australian tour and are dropping into Canberra on Saturday 28 May.
Our next album will probably be a jazz album, who knows!”
5
What are you most excited about coming to Canberra? “Canberra is always really cool – it’s like a big country town and we’re from a regional town in Queensland called Rockhampton. Apart from dying from the cold, we can’t wait to get to Canberra. We’ve been there for some special events… we did Skyfire and played to like 100,000 people on the lakeside and watched the fireworks.” For tickets to Behind the Barricades, visit premier.ticketek.com.au Marou’s answers have been condensed for publication; read an extended version online.

Book talk Your local, independent bookshop in Kingston Canberra’s newest independent bookshop - stocking a large range of quality new books for readers of all ages.
This week, Jeff Popple reviews three new novels by Australian authors. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Murder Rule by Dervla McTiernan Harper Collins, $32.99
Dervla McTiernan’s first three novels about Irish police detective DS Cormac Reilly marked her out as an outstanding author of crime fiction. Now with The Murder Rule, she moves from Ireland to America with a compelling legal thriller. It follows law student Hannah Rokeby who is determined to join the University of Virginia’s Innocence Project, which is dedicated to helping wrongly convicted criminals. Their biggest current case is that of Michael Dandridge, but unlike the rest of her colleagues, Hannah does not want to save Dandridge, she wants to destroy him. This is a cleverly plotted and thoroughly enjoyable thriller. Recommended.

Canberra author Shelley Burr makes a spectacular entry into Australia’s crime writing ranks with her debut novel Wake. Nineteen years ago, young Evelyn McCreery went missing from the bedroom she shared with her twin sister, Mina, on the family’s outback property. Despite a large reward, Evelyn was never found. Private investigator Lane Holland has some personal insights into the case and with Mina’s reluctant help he revisits the disappearance in hope of getting the reward money and putting some old ghosts to rest. A well written and absorbing cold case crime story with a strong sense of place and a good set of characters.
The Truth About Faking It by Cassie Hamer HQ, $29.99
Providing a lighter take on death is Cassie Hamer’s novel about three generations of women trying to keep their seemingly perfect lives in place. When Ellen Trainor’s estranged husband gets killed in a boating accident in Thailand, she is not too upset. Regrettably, her daughter and granddaughter take it more seriously and decide to dig deeper into the suspicious death. Unfortunately, their busy professional lives will not go away and with increasing chaos the three move towards the truth and the unravelling of the lies they have each been spinning. An engaging novel that casts an insightful eye on modern day life.

the look She made her fashion girl debut at the world premiere of Bridgerton Series 2, pairing a wide-collar crop and accented lace skirt with a Gucci underwear set complete with garters.
On her way to the Today Show she looked absolutely peachy, dressed in Hermes from the collar of her rope jacket to the toe of her flatforms.
Speaking of cool girl, matching her emerald eyeshadow to the Chanel monogram on her dress? Flawless.

At the British Academy Film Awards, she wowed on Instagram in this shockingpink Valentino ensemble. A modern-day Viscountess, to be sure.

Every year in Australia, over 152 million single-use plastic (SUP) bottles’ worth of shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and skincare go to landfill, from supermarket brands alone. According to the Federal Government’s Waste Report, only 15 per cent of the plastics Australians consume will get recycled. Zero Co, known for their zero-waste refill model in home-cleaning products, has put the beauty industry on notice, creating the world’s first refillable and SUPfree liquid shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and roll-on deodorant. In the last 18 months, Zero Co has
removed the equivalent of 803,083 water bottles’ worth of rubbish from oceans and beaches by funding clean ups around Australia, according to co-Founder Mike Smith. Their signature Pouch Recovery Machine has prevented the equivalent of 789,325 water bottles from ending up in landfill. The Pouch Recovery Machine is Australian engineered tech that cleans and sanitises used refill pouches that are returned by Zero Co customers (for free in a reply-paid envelope). Once clean, the pouches are refilled with product and sent back out to other customers. Learn more at zeroco.com.au

ACT House of the Year wins big at MBA Nationals The ACT took out some big wins at the recent Master Builders Australia 2021 National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards. The National Project Home Over $2 Million award went to a stunning four-wing home in Forrest, constructed by Manteena Residential, Architects Ring and Associates, and The Dept. of Design. Manteena Residential also won the National Residential Master Builder of the Year, for the same project, proving Canberra’s building
industry is nation leading. Master Builders ACT CEO, Michael Hopkins said, “Every year the standard of quality and craftsmanship of ACT projects in the spotlight at the National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards is amplified. “This is the first time an ACT builder has won the National Residential Master Builder of the Year Award. This demonstrates that Canberra builders are leading the nation on building quality, commitment to safety, sustainability, and innovation,” he said.

Blackshaw Belconnen Lending remains historically high, says REIA merges with Taylors One of Canberra’s oldest family run businesses, Taylors Real Estate, is combining their expertise with Blackshaw Real Estate in Belconnen. Taylors Real Estate in Florey will be merging into the Blackshaw Belconnen office, and principal Matt Sebbens, managing principal Esther Sebbens, and Darryl Taylor assure their Canberra clients of a seamless transition. “Ever since Esther and I commenced our careers in real estate, we’ve heard nothing but great things about Taylors,” said Mr Sebbens. “We’re excited and humbled to be working with Darryl now, to ensure the legacy of that foundation.”
The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) lending indicators have remained historically high, but have reasonably stablised, says Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president, Hayden Groves. The report shows the value of new loan commitments rose by 1.6 per cent to $33.3 billion in March 2022, following a fall of 3.5 per cent in February. Meanwhile, January recorded a record high of $33.9 billion. The value of new investor loan commitments hit a record high of $11.7 billion in March, and Mr Groves said this was the key contributor to the rise in the value of new housing loan commitments. “The number of loans to first home buyers is a whopping 32.8 per cent down on what was recorded a year ago, however new loan
commitments to this market increased 4.2 per cent in March after two months of decreases,” he said. Mr Groves said the trend in lending is as expected given Australia’s current political and economic conditions. “With inflation – particularly of nondiscretionary goods outside of Budget 2022 forecasts – coupled with a rise in interest rates and a federal election, a stabilising or a new normal approach is reflected in these lending figures,” he said. Reflecting the rise in housing prices over the past year, the ABS data also reported a rise in the value of new owner-occupier loan commitments, rising by 0.9 per cent to $21.6 billion in March 2022, but still 2.2 per cent lower than in March 2021.
Gap between Canberra renters and landlords widens Per Capita and V&F Housing Enterprise Foundation’s latest release, the Housing Affordability Report: Tackling a Wicked Problem, has placed Canberra as Australia’s number one city, but certainly not for its affordability. In the 12 months between March 2021 and March 2022, rental prices for houses in Canberra increased an astonishing 16.4 per cent, while unit rents rose 11.9 per cent. Canberra remained the most expensive capital city to rent compared to all other 42
canberraweekly.com.au
capitals, costing an average of $768.30 per week for a house and $553.20 for a unit. The report additionally calculated rent as a proportion of income for different household types, and the percentages for Canberra painted a grim picture. For a single person on Jobseeker, living in Canberra would be deemed “extremely unaffordable” as 113 per cent of their income would be required to be spent on rent. According to the report, this was the largest proportion of income spent on rent in any
major area in Australia. The only household income type for which it is considered “affordable” to live in Canberra is a dual income couple with children, who would spend 14 per cent of their income on rent. The report suggested rental stress was particularly problematic in Canberra with fewer than 10 per cent of homes being “affordable” for the bottom 40 per cent of income earners. Along with Sydney and Perth, Canberra is one of the least affordable areas for single pensioners, Jobseekers, and part-time earners.

Tastefully renovated yet with original features still intact, including cedar panelling throughout, this traditional, two-storey clinker brick home encompasses the era of its time. Agent Jack Wilson says the home has its original vibe, while being tastefully renovated in the desired areas. “11 Buggy Crescent has multiple living areas with a separate lounge, formal dining, and meals area, three renovated spaces with bedrooms upstairs and living areas downstairs. It also has a four-person spa,” says Mr Wilson. “There’s a sizeable swimming pool, new Colourbond fencing

Celebrating 25 Years! ‘ We ve reached a huge milestone and we are celebrating! This month marks our 25th year in the Canberra community.
Our journey started from humble beginnings, in a small commercial space in Hawker, with second hand furniture, no staff and minimal working capital. Today, we reside in central Belconnen, with a team of 20 hardworking staff members and the loyalty and trust of hundreds of clients. I would like to say I had a vision to grow the business to become an established industry leader in the Canberra region, but to be honest I was simply focused on providing a service level that would exceed our clients’ expectations. I felt if I could sustain this high level of service over a long period of time then the business would grow organically without the hype and fanfare the industry is known for. In our time in the industry, we have seen the introduction of GST, made it through the GFC, and now experiencing the global pandemic of Covid 19! Throughout it all, the hard work of our team, the loyalty of our clients and the community we have created, have allowed us to be here today, celebrating 25 incredible years. To our current and past team members – I appreciate your contribution to our success throughout the years. Your loyalty and your own dedication to

our service levels is what has allowed our business to be where it is today. It is your enthusiasm, support and dedication that has helped our team to continue to service the Canberra community. The company flourishes upon your existence and hard work. To our past and current clients – I want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank all our valued clients who have expressed confidence in us and who have been so loyal the last 25 years. Without your confidence in our services through the years, our story would not have been so successful. You have shared our business to friends and family in a better way than any of our promotional means could. We treasure each and every client for being a part of our story and the ongoing support we receive.
To the entire Canberra community, we plan to keep our business and relationship growing with you and to continue providing you nothing but the best. We look forward to continue growing, evolving, learning and servicing you for many years to come. Thanks for your support

Thanks to our friends at Acorn Media, CW has 5 x Under the Vines (M) DVDs (RRP $34.95) to be won. When Sydney socialite Daisy Munroe (Rebecca Gibney) and London lawyer Louis Oakley (Charles Edwards) inherit a New Zealand vineyard, they quickly learn that neither is the “sole heir” as each believed – and the estate is a dilapidated money pit. The duo want nothing more than to sell up and get out of there. But when they get an unexpected taste of success, they wonder if the vineyard may not be worthless after all. Despite never having done a hard day’s work in their lives, these unlikely vintners must somehow make the Oakley Winery profitable if it’s to survive. And as they dig into the project, they discover it’s never too late to come of age.
