contents From the editor Other than two fresh gingerbread folk and my younger son’s democracy sausage with onion, some of the things I took away from Saturday’s Election Day include: truly, “the only poll that counts is the one on election day”; the democracy sausage is a great Aussie tradition; 9am Saturday is an ideal time to vote and snag a treat; Aussies favour a good pun, as evidenced by sightings of Jacqui Lambiengtons, Iced ScoMo’s, Tanya Plibiscuits and CupKaty’s (to name a few) at democracy bake stalls. With the election day behind us and a new federal government taking shape, Canberrans can now look forward to our Reconciliation Day public holiday this Monday 30 May. As well as our cover story featuring young local Indigenous woman Jessika Spencer sharing her traditional weaving skills (page 4), you can also find Reconciliation Day activities in Time Out (page 32) and Indigenous designers in The Look (page 39) and Home (page 43). Reasons to be grateful this past week include freely exercising my democratic responsibility to vote and the friendly community vibe at the local school on polling day, attending opening night of Jane Eyre with a friend, an intoxicating night of live music at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s Miracles in the Age of Reason concert, celebrating the best of the best at the National Wine Dinner, weekend catch-ups with friends, and a family birthday party.

cover story

Clutching her kangaroo bone needle, Lomandra reeds and Coolamon, proud Wiradjuri woman, Jessika Spencer, is keeping traditional weaving knowledge alive as she follows in her ancestors’ footsteps. Walking together on country, Jessika leads us to a quiet section at Lake Ginninderra, where native plants grow in abundance and kookaburras laugh in the trees. Her knowledge of country is evident as she eloquently shares her understanding of the surrounding plants, trees, and birds, as we sit down to have a yarn. Jessika begins her story at the Sandhills of Narrandera, NSW where she’s from, and where the Murrumbidgee River flows with a long and, at times, painful history. She explains that the Aboriginal people of the area, including her own ancestors, were pushed out to the Sandhills during white settlement. “My family still lives there [the Sandhills] and it’s where I was first taught to weave. I was raised by my Nan, so she really instilled in me a deep love and respect for culture,” Jessika says. “Throughout my life a lot of talented First Nations women have taught me different ways of weaving, and I’m really grateful for that passing of cultural knowledge. There’s one Worimi sister in particular that really gave me so much guidance on weaving. I don’t take it lightly; It’s something that is at my core, and I always make sure to acknowledge and pay my respect to. “I worked for many years alongside staunch Aboriginal Rangers, and they taught me so much about culture and country. They definitely helped grow and 4

strengthen my knowledge. They’re family now.” Reflecting on weaving, Jessika recalls the important cultural protocols behind it. “For a lot of Wiradjuri women, weaving is women’s business, so I was taught to weave in safe cultural spaces. Particularly on our women’s sites,” says Jessika. Biyanha, a Wiradjuri phrase meaning ‘habitual’, was a name warmly gifted to Jessika for her weaving project by her cherished grandmother and respected Wiradjuri Elder. Passionately aiming to close a cultural knowledge gap across Ngunnawal and Ngambri country through Biyanha, Jessika runs weaving workshops, and recently was a YWCA Canberra Great Ydeas Small Grant recipient. Living on Ngunnawal and Ngambri country for around two decades, Jessika says she’s always been a part of the Aboriginal community here. “We’re neighbouring clans,” smiles Jessika. “There’s so many of our Indigenous women who want to weave, but there aren’t many opportunities. “I thought, wouldn’t it be amazing if we had an Aboriginal facilitator who really had that community goal and passion to go across country and share that cultural knowledge and show support to Elders and Traditional Owners. “Getting the YWCA Grant means a lot. It means I’m able to really help the local Indigenous community, which is what I’ve always wanted to do.” Most likely found barefoot in the bush, Jessika generally collects native

Aided by her beloved Coolamon, Jessika Spencer collects native reeds to craft beautiful items, her favourite being Coolamon earrings, in honour of her culture, her ancestors, and for her Nan.

Lomandra and Cumbungi reeds, splits them with her fingers, and dries them out in her Coolamon. Weaving intricate baskets with cultural resilience tied between every reed, Jessika uses an array of vegetables, fruits, and tree leaves to create beautiful colours and, more importantly, to continue preserving culture. Sustainability and eco dyeing are at the forefront of her creative work. Utilising emu feathers in her work, weaving them amongst the reeds, also feels special to Jessika, as they are “closely connected to women’s business”. “I think my ancestors would be really proud… definitely. I’m doing what I am, because they weren’t able to. My Nan says she’s proud of me weaving. She’s actually 90 and she’s still kicking, and for a blackfulla, that’s rare! She constantly reiterates how proud she is of me,” says Jessika, her smile revealing a humble sense of pride. “Unfortunately, she now has arthritis, so she can’t weave herself, so I can see that pride as she’s watching me go on and weave and teach other people… the next generation. “Nan wasn’t allowed to practise culture and weave growing up on the mission, particularly in public spaces. It could only safely be done on the Sandhills, near the river, where we still weave today.

“Weaving isn’t just a fibre craft – it’s also got to do with land management and preserving culture, and this project embodies all of that. It’s really about sharing that knowledge because if we don’t… what happens to it?” Jessika says learning to weave is a “lifelong journey”. “Weaving is everything to me. It’s absolutely everything. It’s very calming and has helped me heal; it helps me to ground myself and remember who I am,” she says. “I’m constantly weaving. This isn’t for show and tell, this is so genuine and from the heart for me.” When asked what the term ‘preserving culture’ means to her, Jessika ponders for a moment. “To me, preserving culture means really keeping it strong, keeping ties with local Elders, Traditional Owners, and other community members who have come from different mobs,” says Jessika, her smile faltering slightly. “When I think of preserving culture, I think about… what are my kids going to see? What are my grandchildren going to see? For me, it’s really just about maintaining that cultural knowledge for past generations and future ones.” Ensuring the continuation of her culture is intrinsic to Jessika’s being, as she keeps the knowledge of Wiradjuri weaving alive and well. - Abbey Halter

ALP and Coalition need to cooperate for Australia’s sake Firstly, congratulations to Albo on becoming PM, and especially congratulations to Canberra’s very own Katy Gallagher on becoming finance minister. This is the highest ministerial rank an ACT federal politician has ever attained. At the time I write, it looks like the ALP will govern in its own right, thankfully, as the mix of crossbench groups in the parliament is interesting to say the least. In the first ACT Assembly, we ended up with six different groups from 17 people. The five ALP and four Liberals would, on occasion, get together and stop some of the crazier ideas being put forward by the others from coming to fruition. Even in federal parliament on rare occasions, Liberal and Labor do combine against others such as the Greens to prevent disastrous ideas getting momentum. I’d remind Albo that his first duty is to ensure the security of Australia; this means having a strong defence force, but it also means things like

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

ensuring energy security. The new Opposition must also be prepared to work with the ALP in ensuring this, so when the Greens and those wealthy, middle-aged white women from the “teals” (who can afford electricity rises of 200 or 300 per cent, unlike the battlers out in Charnwood, Isabella Plains, Cabramatta and Logan) come to him and demand he slash defence spending and close down our coal mines and gas fields by 2025, he can tell them where to get off, knowing he has the backing of the opposition if they try anything in the Senate. There are two wonderful human stories coming out of this election. The first is about a little working-class boy of Italian origins, brought up by a single mum in a housing trust home who worked hard to give her son every opportunity. This boy went through uni and has now risen to the highest office in the land - Anthony Albanese. He has a reputation as a decent man who looks

after all his constituents in inner Sydney. He knows hardship and thrift, and the sacrifice a parent makes for their child. The second one concerns a little girl in the NT whose grandmother gave birth to her mum under a tree in a remote community. Her mum went on to be a minister of the crown in the Country/Liberal government, and that little girl, Jacinta Price, is now heading off to Canberra as an NT senator. She is a strong, impressive, practical conservative and will do much for Indigenous Australians and, indeed, all Australians. I’d expect her to attain high ministerial rank in a future conservative government and she has the potential to end up our first Indigenous PM. Finally, commiserations to Zed, and congratulations to David Pocock. Capital Food Market will complement an already vibrant precinct, joining Bunnings Warehouse, First Choice Liquor, Chemist Warehouse, PetBarn, BBQs Galore and other national retailers. The precinct will also benefit from regeneration of the immediately adjoining land with residential mixed-use projects, including the 313 apartment ‘Market Residences’ development. Guests and traders at the Capital Food Market will experience a buzzing atmosphere. “The plan is designed with a large seating and activation space in the centre of the market,” Christopher Young, the Market Director said. “We plan to use this space for pop-up events,

seasonal festivals, cooking classes, and the promotion of local produce, seafood, and wine.” The Market’s ground up design allows traders to choose from 25sqm to 340sqm tenancy spaces, as well as additional storage and loading facilities. Expressions of interest from passionate and creative food and produce specialists are now welcomed. Please hurry to ensure you don’t miss out on this unique Canberra food opportunity.

“The flowers that bloom in the spring, tra la, breathe promise of merry sunshine” – and the 35th Floriade, Australia’s biggest celebration of spring, will return to its traditional home in Commonwealth Park for the first time since 2019, running from 17 September to 16 October. “It’s wonderful to be able to have the event back in Commonwealth Park,” ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said this week. “It’s been COVID-impacted for two years in a row.” The theme of this year’s Floriade is the Sounds of Spring. More than one million blooms will be on display, spread through the gardens to the soundtrack of atmospheric instrumentals, classical and contemporary tunes. “We really look forward to it being successful,” Mr Barr said. Floriade 2022, he said, promises a month-long festival filled with entertainment and recreational activities celebrating all things flowers, food,

and gardens. Visitors will experience a diverse program of music, cultural celebrations, food and wine, horticultural workshops, market traders, artistic displays, entertainment and more. NightFest will also return for this year, over four nights, with a revamped program of after-dark entertainment and horticultural illuminations. The community element of the pandemic years will also be kept, Mr Barr said: “Hundreds of thousands of bulbs will be planted right across the city.” Floriade is the ACT’s mainstay tourism event, and the Chief Minister expects it will bring in more than $40 million, hopefully more than $50 million, for the Territory’s economy. It would, he said, be “a timely and important boost for the tourism industry coming out of winter”. “For locals, Floriade tends to signify

news From 1 July, single-use plastic straws, cotton buds with plastic sticks, and all oxo-degradable plastics will be banned in the ACT, no longer able to be sold or supplied. “The ACT Government is making it simple and easy for Canberrans to cut waste,” said Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, on Monday 23 May. These bans are in addition to the single-use plastics items already banned in the ACT since 2021: single-use plastic cutlery and drink stirrers, expanded polystyrene takeaway food and beverage containers, and plastic bags that are less than 35 microns in thickness. An exemption applies to single-use plastic straws, which Mr Steel said were “a safety and accessibility tool for some Canberrans with a disability”. Businesses such as cafés and restaurants may supply individuals with single-use plastic straws upon request. No reason or proof of need is required, but it is also not compulsory for businesses to stock plastic straws.

Aged care or disability facilities, pharmacies, and other healthcare entities that provide care or products to people with a disability or healthcare need may stock, supply, and sell single-use plastic straws. The ACT Government is working with local and national partners to ensure local businesses and organisations are aware of the upcoming ban. “This next phase of our single use plastics ban will ensure a level playing field by seeing all businesses make the switch to more sustainable alternatives at the same time,” Mr Steel said. He thanked businesses and organisations that have already made the switch “for embracing alternative products and helping make Canberra a more sustainable city”. “Over the past 12 months, we have been engaging with a wide range of stakeholders about these bans to ensure the needs of all Canberrans continue to be met as we phase out these products,” the Minister said. “Retailers are eager to comply, and we will continue to work with government to seek clarity

Next month will see four Canberrans take on the challenge of running seven consecutive marathons, across seven states, over just seven days (27 June-3 July). The Bravehearts 777 is a gruelling endurance challenge that Aussies take on to help raise money and awareness against child sexual abuse. “It gets such incredible buzz because people look at us like we are crazy,” laughs 45-year-old Canberra mum, Jess Peli. This will be her fourth 777, and the eighth run ever of the event. “I initially went into it as a challenge, but really quickly, I got engrossed in the cause.” On a family holiday when she was 16 years old, an adult “family friend” came into Jess’ room uninvited and laid on top of her – leaving Jess frozen, not knowing what to do, or say. “All I knew is that whole holiday that they were with us, I felt really uneasy. I needed a little bit of a break when I laid down on my bed during the day, and within five minutes he rocked up.

“My brother and I were sharing a room and we had these tiny little trundle beds that were so narrow, and he lay on top of me and just said ‘not very big, is it?’ Afterwards, I didn’t really put two and two together.” It would be years before Jess saw her personal experience for what it was, well into adulthood, and even after the man once known as ‘The Fun Uncle’ had died. “I have met a lot of people along the way. It’s amazing how many have come forward in day-today life and said, ‘this happened to me’.” One in five children experience child sexual assault or exploitation. In up to 90 per cent of child sexual assault cases, the offender is known to the family. The chance to be part of the solution kept Jess’ heart in the game, while her head was still piecing her own story together. Jess was nominated Local Hero in the Australian of the Year 2021 awards, where Canberra was first

The many reasons for downsizing Making the decision to downsize isn’t easy and there’s a lot to consider when you do. Often, people put off making the big call – until they find somewhere they can actually see themselves living. Marigal Gardens Community Manager, Colin says Marigal Gardens dispels a lot of myths about what an over 55s community is like – and can make a tough decision much easier. “Sometimes one partner is a bit reluctant initially, but when they see what we have to offer, by the end they’re the ones who are really quite excited!” Marigal Gardens residents Peter and Sandra agree. “We had been talking about downsizing for a while but had not really been serious about it until we visited Marigal Gardens,” Sandra said. There are a lot of reasons why residents find Marigal Gardens appealing – here are just a few of them. Location, location! There’s no doubt a prime spot is high on everyone’s list of priorities. Marigal Gardens ticks all the boxes – serenely beautiful, nestled in the suburbs and yet wonderfully convenient too. Waking up to breathtaking mountain views provides quiet joy, every day. And with the local shopping village just 500m down the road, life’s more practical needs are easy to take care of. And as a resident’s needs change, their home can change too. No matter what the budget, or lifestyle, there are plenty of options to suit. Ditching the mower Residents love the fact that moving to Marigal Gardens frees them from the chore of maintaining a home. Our team takes care of all those little jobs around the house, so residents have more time to do the things they really love to do. We’ll even change the lightbulbs. Making the most of every day, your way Marigal Gardens is a thriving community with wonderful facilities and a lifeaffirming vibe that residents love. There are organised activities for all tastes should you choose to pursue a long-held passion or try something new. And should travel beckon, our team and neighbours make sure a home is well looked after, so residents can take off with confidence. While buyers focus on lots of different reasons when making their decision, most come to a similar conclusion when they have finally settled in. Gay, one of our residents sums it up neatly: “I wish I’d made the move sooner.” If you’re thinking of downsizing and joining our wonderful community, the final stage of Marigal Gardens brand new apartments are now on sale. news Organisations around Canberra recently received charming postcards featuring the Gang-gang cockatoo, an invitation to view the students at Canberra Montessori School plant habitat for the endangered species. On Thursday 19 May, Glenn Watson’s Cycle 3 (grades 4-6) Karri class planted Indigenous trees in a previously unused garden walkway, following two terms of researching and surveilling Gang-gangs. “They’re gaga about Ganggangs,” said Mr Watson on his 19 pupils, who’ve been studying under the auspices of Bird Life Australia. According to Mr Watson, the children took a liking to the struggling Gang-gangs immediately. To rejuvenate the ‘Indigenous Walk,’ the Birdlife Australia Ganggang Project has provided 20 saplings to be planted by the children.

The school community has also provided 20 more plants, with hundreds pledged to come. Mr Watson and the children hope to see Gang-gangs return to their school within 10 years. “It is just so important for the children here, and for their children, that we actually have an Earth and an environment that has great diversity and will be able to cope with the difficulties it’s going to face. “I often say ‘My generation has messed things up and many of them still refuse to do anything about it, but we have to do something.’” Aaron Chatfield, a Gamilaraay man born and raised on Ngunnawal country, will continue to guide the children in their next steps of growing a Yuki Mulch path, and lining it with native plants. “Our garden trail here is not only

creating habitat for the Ganggangs, but down the track, we’re going to be planting native plant beds that the kids can then harvest for weaving plants.” Through Yarning Circle, the children will learn how to weave the foliage into ropes, nets and baskets. “Next, we’re going to plant edible beds that the kids can then harvest and use in their cooking classes.” The third garden beds will grow medicine plants that have been used for generations by Ngunnawal people. “I can see the change in the school society, adapting, and becoming more accepting of the Indigenous culture,” said Mr Chatfield. “Montessori seems to be front of the game.” Ten-year-old Greta Martin has been looking forward to the tree planting since she first saw a male and female Gang-gang near her house. When asked what she likes so much about them, she grinned toothily. “Strawberry heads,” she replied. Greta said it’s important kids her age learn how to protect the environment “so that when we grow up, we don’t have a world where the skies are grey”.

Sitting on a mound of dirt with spade in hand, nine-year-old Kit said she’s very excited her tree might one day house Gang-gangs. Kit said that she’ll come back and visit her tree when it’s fully grown. “Kids my age, when they have great great-grandchildren, it’s important that they don’t look outside and say, ‘I wish the Ganggangs were here’ or ‘I wished magpies weren’t endangered’,” she pondered. Best friends Urooba, nine, and Alina, 11, were excited to spend the day in the dirt together. “We want to help the environment and stop climate change,” said Urooba softly. When asked whether her class’s efforts to prevent that future made her happy, Alina quoted a hero. “It makes me happy that we’re doing something about it, but I think it makes me nervous, too. It’s like when Mr Incredible said, ‘I feel like I’m the maid. Every time I clean up a mess, it always comes back.’” From the mouth of babes comes a message as the dust settles on the recent election: Keep the world clean for 10 minutes, give the Gang-gangs, and the next generation, a break. - Anja de Rozario

So, if we do nothing then these are the questions you must ask yourself: “I didn’t need housing, so I did nothing? I had plenty of security; so I did nothing? I had a good amount of super for retirement; so I did nothing? But then I found myself without a thing, enslaved within a controlling system, with no-one left to save us”. House

sport Raiders make it three in a row Canberra lifted to celebrate club champion Josh Papalii’s 250th NRL game by battling through a flu outbreak to roll South Sydney 32-12 for a third straight win. Coach Ricky Stuart said the performance defied an interrupted week. “They don’t want to hear too much about it because they don’t like getting rapped like that, but they deserve it,” Stuart said. “That win after the week we’ve had with the flu and injuries and players that had to pull out … it was a really good performance under the conditions and the pressure we had on us this week.” The Raiders play the Eels in a blockbuster at GIO Stadium Canberra on Sunday 29 May.

Lazy lentil lasagne

Prawn couscous paella

Serves 4 | Prep 10 mins | Cooking 20 mins

Serves 5 | Prep 10 mins | Cooking 20 mins

1 brown onion

1 bunch of basil

1 garlic clove

2 x fresh lasange sheets (or dried)

400g can lentils

200g smooth ricotta

1 zucchini

1.5 cups grated cheese (mozzarella, Tasty or Colby)

1 carrot 1 400g tin diced tomatoes 100g baby spinach

2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar Olive oil

Pre-heat oven to 180°C. Dice the small brown onion, mince the garlic, drain, and rinse the lentils, grate the zucchini and carrot, and pick the basil leaves (discard the stalks). In a large ovenproof frying pan, heat the olive oil on the stove-top and fry the onion until soft. Add in the garlic and stir through (1 minute) then add the lentils and grated vegetables and stir through. Stir in the balsamic vinegar, tomatoes and ¼ cup of water before bringing to a simmer for 5 minutes. Next break the lasagne sheet into big pieces, add them to the pan and spoon sauce over them. Place the spinach and basil on top, then drop tablespoon size dollops of ricotta all over the spinach.

30

2 cups pearl couscous

2 tsp ground coriander

2.5 cups chicken stock

2 tsp fennel seeds

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 red capsicum, deseeded and thinly sliced

1 brown onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely sliced 1 chorizo sausage, diced 4 tomatoes, diced 2 tsp smoked paprika

500g green tiger prawns 1 cup of frozen peas 1 lemon, cut into wedges to serve Parsley, to serve

Heat the olive oil in a medium pot and sauté the onions until soft – about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and chorizo, stirring often to prevent the garlic from burning. Add the chopped tomatoes and simmer until they collapse. Add spices and stir through for one minute. Next add the couscous, capsicum, peas and stock. Mix it through well, bring to the boil and then turn the heat right down and leave to simmer for 10-12 minutes. While the couscous cooks, peel and de-vein the prawns leaving only the tail for presentation if you wish.

To finish, cover the top with the grated cheese. Place the whole pan into the pre-heated oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and beginning to brown.

When the couscous is al dente, stir in the prawns and leave to cook on low heat for 3-4 minutes or until the flesh turns white.

Serve straight from the pan.

Serve immediately with fresh lemon wedges and parsley.

Ukrainian musician Larissa Kovalchuk performs to draw attention to her people’s plight. The soprano and player of the bandura, the traditional Ukrainian stringed instrument, will be the star of a fundraising concert for her country at Llewellyn Hall on Tuesday 31 May. “It’s frustrating for me to be here, knowing what’s going on in my country,” Ms Kovalchuk said. “Sometimes I feel guilty that I’m in a safe place… [But] I feel that this is my duty and my purpose right now. “I can bring awareness to people. People get used to the war happening; even people in Ukraine adapt to this horrible situation. But we have to remind humanity it shouldn’t be like that.” Music for the People of Ukraine, a collaboration between the Canberra International Music Festival, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and the ANU’s School of Music, will raise money for the Australian Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal and Médecins Sans Frontières. The concert will feature Ukrainian folk music and works by Ukraine’s most famous living composer, Valentin Silvestrov. Homeland and country are the theme of arias Ms Kovalchuk will sing from Hulak-Artemovsky’s opera Zaporizhets za Dunayem (A Cossack Beyond the Danube, or Cossacks in Exile). She will also sing Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk’s “very, very sad and pretty” Melody, a wordless a cappella piece originally written for the flute, as well as a couple of songs based on traditional Ukrainian folk music. The ANU Chamber Choir will

sing Plyve kacha, a Ukrainian folk song about a son going off to war, parting from his mother. The four-part harmony is beautiful, Ms Kovalchuk says. She will also perform the bandura, “the voice of the Ukrainian nation from generation to generation”. Dating back to the sixth century, it was once a sacred instrument that only men could play, singing historic and heroic epic ballads, descriptions of nature and the seasons, or uplifting stories about family and social values. From the 19th century, Russia tried to suppress the instrument: the Tsarists banned performances, while the Soviets exiled or murdered bandurists, culminating in a massacre in Kharkiv in the 1930s. Many fled to Canada and the USA. Restrictions were eased after Stalin’s death, but those bandurists still in Soviet-occupied Ukraine had to sing Communist works; works with nationalist or religious elements were banned. Few men were allowed to study or play the instrument professionally. Ms Kovalchuk herself studied voice, bandura, and conducting at the Kyiv Conservatorium of Music, and became one of Ukraine’s leading bandura players, performing in Western Europe, and earning international renown at a 1993 festival organised by Yehudi Menuhin. But as a student before the fall of the USSR, because she played a traditional national instrument, she had to be careful what songs she sang. Her teacher warned her that if she wanted to graduate from the Conservatorium, she should not attend meetings and demonstrations, or sing too many Ukrainian nationalistic

songs. Similarly, when she and fellow Ukrainian students performed in Germany or France, KGB agents accompanied them on tour to check who they talked to, what they said, and where they shopped. Since moving to Australia in 1996, Ms Kovalchuk has recorded for SBS and the ABC, and appeared at the Sydney Opera House, numerous multicultural and folk festivals, and in concerts for Musica Viva and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. Now, she watches what is happening in her home country with great concern. Three months ago this week, on 24 February, Russia invaded Ukraine. Somewhere between 10,000 and 25,000 civilians have been killed, according to the Ukrainian government. (The UN figure is lower: nearly 4,000 killed and 4,500 wounded.) In the worst refugee and humanitarian crisis since the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, more than 6.4 million Ukrainians have left their country, 90 per cent of them women and children, and a quarter of the population been displaced. “I am trying to help as much as I can,” Ms Kovalchuk said. She and her partner send clothes and medical assistance to people she knows and to the army, including her partner’s nephew. “They are defending the country,” Ms Kovalchuk said. She speaks of relatives hiding under

their building, of bombs and broken windows, and of friends escaping to Poland, but returning to look after elderly parents. Ms Kovalchuk recounts a litany of horrors in this “ugly and inhuman” war: mass graves, parents and children murdered, women raped in crowds, simple civilians shot through the head. “Russian savages – you can’t call them any better name. I’m very upset and very angry. “How can humans do something like that to other humans? We used to be ‘brothers’; they called us ‘brothers’ all the time.” But the current invasion is only one chapter in the “long history of the suppression and repression of the Ukrainian nation”, Ms Kovalchuk says; the Russians have long tried to dilute the nation and wipe Ukraine from the face of the earth. Her own family was caught up in Operation Visla (1947), a Soviet attempt at ethnic cleansing when 150,000 Ukrainians living in Poland were relocated to what is now Ukraine. Many died, or were “put on trains and left in the middle of nowhere in winter”. According to the Kyiv Post, resettlement directives decreed that “no more than a 10 per cent concentration of Ukrainians could constitute the population of any urban or rural location”. Her father’s family was displaced (continued next page) canberraweekly.com.au

time out (from previous page) from Sanok (now in Poland), in the Carpathian Mountains, and taken to western Ukraine, left at night with five children. “They had to start from zero, and settle, work, and build their own house,” Ms Kovalchuk recalled. Again, many Ukrainians were sent to Siberia: “Tortured, murdered, without knowing what they did wrong,” she said. Ukraine survived the Soviets, and declared its independence in 1991; with the support of the free world, Ukraine could resist the current Russian invasion. Australians, Ms Kovalchuk said, have been “very helpful and sympathetic”. The former Coalition government provided more than $65 million in humanitarian assistance, a $21 million support package of defensive military assistance for Ukrainian armed forces, and 20

Bushmaster armoured vehicles. Strangers have given Ms Kovalchuk money to send to Ukraine; she has received many invitations to perform; and she was touched by her students dressing in blue and yellow, Ukraine’s national colours. “I hope when all this horror is finished, I will be able to visit my country again… I’d like my children to see my country again.” Music for the People of Ukraine, Tuesday 31 May 7pm; tickets $55–$75. Book online at cso.org.au/ukraine, or call CSO Direct on 6262 6772 (weekdays, 10am–3pm). Tickets will be available at the door (unless sold out sooner). The concert also features William Barton, Miroslav Bukovsky and Friends, Kim Cunio, Andrew Goodwin, the CSO Chamber Ensemble and the ANU Orchestra, with Roland Peelman and Max McBride conducting. - Nick Fuller

Now showing Hatching (MA15+) Popular lifestyle vlogger ‘Mother’ (Sophia Heikkilä) tries to film her latest video showing off her ‘perfect’ family; Father (Jani Volanen), young Matias (Oiva Ollila) and 12-year-old gymnast Tinja (Siiri Solalinna). Soon however, a large black bird bursts into the living room, causing complete havoc! After disposing of the rascal, Tinja cries over an egg that the crow left behind, and chooses to nurse it herself. The movie serves as a metaphor for the shadow-self and the consequences of repressing aspects of oneself. Tinja is so desperate for her perfectionist, demanding and emotionally manipulative mother’s approval that she devotes herself to competing in gymnastics. Tinja is

shy, introspective and overly self-disciplined in contrast to her extrovert, ex-skating competitor Mother whom the entire family lives in the shadow of; Matias is dressed similarly to Father who has accepted Mother’s extramarital affairs. Something has to break, and it does in the form of an eggshell, which hosts a being that is a blend of both the chaotic nature of the world outside the picture-perfect household and that of Tinja’s discarded emotions and repressed rage. The creature is practical, invoking imagery of Jim Henson’s work in The Dark Crystal and the original Star Wars movies, giving the movie a quirky tone bordering on fantasy, horror and satirical comedy. As the being grows, the ultimate identity of Tinja is called into question. Who, or what, will prevail? Verdict: A brilliantly quirky and disturbing coming-of-age horror which satirises the pitfalls of social media. 5 stars. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

This week, Jeff Popple reviews three books about the Australian outback. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Outback Teacher by Sally Gare and Freda Marnie Allen & Unwin, $32.99

In 1956 at the age of 20, freshly minted teacher Sally Gare was sent to work at a two-teacher school based at an Aboriginal mission run by the Church of England, some 3000 kilometres from Perth. Situated near the border with the Northern Territory, Forrest River Mission was as far from a big city as you get. It was a challenging experience for Sally, who found herself doing more than just teaching. Full of great stories and reflections, Outback Teacher is a fascinating chronicle of the first six years of Sally’s teaching career in small outback schools, and a reminder of how things were.

Spinifex: The Curse of The Night Parrot by John Grant Storm Bird, $29.95

We sell pages for all ages

John Grant combines bird watching and murder in his entertaining novel about the efforts to save a rare Australian bird. The discovery of the almost extinct night parrot lures smugglers to the outback in hope of capturing it and selling it on the black market. Wildlife officer Ric Butler is the only person standing in their way, but when he is falsely accused of murder, he goes on the run. As the smugglers head into the steamy croc-infested waters of the remote Torres Strait, Butler is on their trail. A wealth of interesting background information on Australia’s wildlife enhances this engaging thriller.

The Island by Adrian McKinty Hachette, $32.99

Adrian McKinty achieved well deserved international success with his last novel, The Chain, and now he is back with another thrilling tale, The Island, set in outback Australia. A vacation for an American family turns to hell when a terrible incident sets them on the run from a violent clan of locals. With each chapter, McKinty ups the ante as disliked stepmother Heather desperately tries to keep her newly acquired family safe. Although it is unlikely to be popular with the Australian tourist industry, The Island certainly gets the blood pumping and the pages turning as it races to its dramatic conclusion.

Ngali walks First Nations runway at Australian Fashion Week BY ANJA DE ROZARIO

In a celebration of the very first makers, Australian Fashion Week 2022 saw the return of the Indigenous Fashion Projects Runway held on Gadigal Land on Day 2. The runway showcased collections from five of Australia’s leading First Nations designers, each drawing on the creator’s deep and personal connection to Country. Among them was Wiradjuri woman Denni Francisco, who showcased her exclusive collection, ‘Ngina’. “Ngina translates to ‘here’ or ‘this’ in Wiradjuri language,” says Ms Francisco. “The collection acknowledges that we are ‘here’ today because of the footsteps laid down by our Ancestors. “The prints in the collection acknowledge that ‘this’ is how we

share the stories of First Nations creativity, that together we create with meaning and purpose. “First nations people were the first makers, and in that we are the past, present and future of fashion,” she told Canberra Weekly, on the overarching theme of the show, ‘The Future is First Nations’. “We’ve always been here, and the future is about representation and people finally noticing that.” In 2018, Francisco founded her fashion label ‘Ngali’, which means ‘us’ or ‘we’ in Wiradjuri. “Country is at the very heart of all things Ngali. It is where inspiration and creativity are born.” The IFP Runway debuted last year, in a softer run of Australian Fashion Week. The full-swing return of Indigenous designers to the main stage brought Aboriginal

top models like Samantha Harris, culminating in a performance from Jessica Mauboy. The runway was an immersive journey from the desert heart of Australia, along freshwater rivers, through to the sea, with soundscapes flooding the room in Carriageworks. This was brought to life by an expert team of First Nations creatives, including artist Wayne Quilliam, Creative Director and Eastern Arrernte woman Shilo McNamee, and Head Runway Stylist and Yorta Yorta man Rhys Ripper. McNamee custom created the floor artwork ‘River Sands.’ Front and centre were the five First Nations women making their mark on the global fashion landscape, using fashion design as a platform to tell their stories and

share their unique cultures. “The IFP program provides the wide-open space for creativity to shine in so many different ways. It is a fun and exciting journey to take with other First Nations creatives and that is its uniqueness,” says Ms Francisco. “Nowhere else is there a designer collective that independently create their own collections but do it together in the spirit of collaboration. Ms Francisco says that the next step after showcasing runways like IFP at Australian Fashion Week is seeing an Indigenous Australian designer with their own dedicated runway. “I want to see Australian First Nations artwork step off the wall, and travel all over the world through fashion design.” canberraweekly.com.au

Oscar Delpozo’s bittersweet scent-off after 27 years David Jones Woden will farewell a go-to employee on 1 July, as Oscar Delpozo, 67, ends his 27-year career helping Canberrans find their signature scent. The name Delpozo means ‘of the world’, and Oscar wears his surname like perfume. As a young man, he moved from Argentina to Sydney seeking adventure. “I studied arts at ANU; I’m a painter. Got my degree, first class honours, and ta da! I had zero money left. “I saw this job in the paper, ‘casuals wanted’. There was this magnificent lady who hired me on the spot and said, ‘what you’re

going to be doing is fragrances’,” he said with a flourish. “I said, ‘Fragrances? What about something I can do?’ And she said ‘no, no, no. Because you have an accent and you dress nicely, they’re going to love you there.’” Despite initial scepticism, almost three decades later, a casual job has become his unmatched skill in recognising the different layers of perfume. “Now I feel strong enough to focus completely on my paintings. Not to sell or become famous, just because I really like to do it.” Oscar also wants to travel the world, and enjoy life with his

partner, Alistair. He names this as the only reason for retiring from a career that he’s loved every second of. “You talk to people, you let them talk, you listen, and they become attached to you somehow, even though you don’t know their name. That little interaction is gold to me. You don’t get it everywhere. “I see customers come to me for years and one day they stop coming, and you find out they have passed away. I see people in their 20s, who say ‘I came to you because you used to help my mother.’ And oh, my goodness, I remember them from when they were so small. And now they’re here to buy something for their wedding.” As an artist, Oscar refuses to subscribe to any one style, using materials that range from metal to leather. “In arts school, you train not to pursue the beauty, but to pursue the meaning. Because what is beauty at the end of the day? “I do feel the same way about fragrances. To me, there is not one perfume better than the other. They are all like colour. “When you work with fragrance, you work with memories. You can smell pretty, but if it reminds you of something (or someone) you don’t like, you’re not going to use it.”

Delpozo tips on finding your signature scent “Firstly, forget about prices, forget about brands. You need to focus on the aromatic group, which could be floral, citrus, spicy, or aquatics. If you don’t know your preference, try one of each. “If for example, you like white flowers, I’ll show you two or three. One with a single flower, like gardenias, another one with a mixture. “Then you have to test it. I will write the name of the perfume for you, and you go home. Usually, it’s just two, one spritzed on each wrist. The one you keep sniffing is the one for you. “Perfumes have layers. If after two hours, there is nothing there, it’s not perfume, it’s a cologne. If after three hours, it has a different, non-artificial smell that’s still there, it’s a perfume. If after six hours there is still something there, you have a quality perfume. “Some companies with big names sell very expensive ‘perfumes’ that are actually just cologne. “I wish I had a dollar for every time a man asked me ‘which is the perfume that’s going to help me pick up chicks?’ I tell them firstly, have a shower. Brush your teeth. And don’t talk stupid. “It’s not the perfume, really. It’s your personality. So, get the perfume you like, so when a person likes it, they’ll like you too.” - Anja de Rozario

Bright Orange, meet Hot Pink

Getty

Trend alert: Australian Fashion Week saw a colour match made in heaven walk almost every runway: bright orange, and hot pink. This fiery pair is sure to be an overarching trend in Summer of ’23, as Australian designers seem dead set on making all of our resort wear sunset adjacent.

Christina Stephens, the designer of this two-piece set, was a key name at the very first adaptive fashion runway at AFW.

WITH BEAUTY AND FASHION EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

Anna Antal transported guests to Marrakesh, Morocco for an immersive runway channeling ‘60s and ‘70s-inspired resort wear.

Apartment’s Cottagecoreworthy designs took a softer, more rustic interpretation of the colour pairing, sported throughout the whole collection.

Australian-Afghan designer Mariam Seddiq prominently featured this geometric print in the on-trend colour palette.

Cutting edge guests like Violet Grace seemed to sense the trend’s onslaught and made sure they weren’t left behind. She paired this hot pink Aje dress with Louboutin signature red soles.

A French oasis Bonython 2 Mayfield Hill Exquisitely luxurious yet warm and welcoming all at once, this private oasis in Bonython is truly an entertainer’s delight with sweeping views to the north, a spa, and gorgeous established gardens. Agents Kelsey White and Michael Martin say there’s certainly space for the whole family at 2 Mayfield Hill. “Our favourite parts of this property as the agents are the commanding street appeal and versatility in the floor plan with three separate living spaces, five bedrooms, and four bathrooms. We also asked 44

canberraweekly.com.au

our vendors what their favourite aspect is, and their response to us was, ‘Coffee and enjoying the sunrise on the deck, and sunset enjoyed in the spa. The house has felt like home from day one’,” the agents say. “This home is filled with character, in the small details of the light switches, coach lights, and tapware, all the way to the French doors, timber floors and high ceilings. This is not your run-of-the-mill family home, there is so much extra space inside and out that would cater to a growing family or the opportunity for multi-

generational living. “Our vendor describes the house as ‘A French house in the country’ and she said that it reminds her of her family home in the Czech Republic. With ease of access to Drakeford Drive leading straight into the Tuggeranong Town Centre, everything you need is just a short drive away. We also love that it’s only a short walk to the Mt Stranger Reserve, which is host to phenomenal views and exciting walking trails.”

Macnamara’s second release delivers more options The Ginninderry project is gearing up for their second land release at Macnamara, with 117 blocks up for grabs along with an increase in available buying options. With blocks ranging in size from 392sqm to 1,083sqm, the available land at Macnamara is located just west of Strathnairn, featuring spectacular views of the Brindabellas. There will be 51 blocks offered by ballot, ranging from 420sqm to 693sqm, and priced from $547,200. Ballot registrations are now open and close on Friday 3 June at 5pm. There will be 35 Brindabella View auction blocks, ranging from 450sqm to 1083sqm. Auction registrations are opening on 18 June with auctions to commence online from 2 July.

46

Additionally, there will be 31 house and land packages available through Ginninderry’s Display Village builders. Head of Marketing and Communications, Marcus Mills-Smith, said the different types of home buying options gives Canberrans increased choice in the second release at Macnamara. “This release follows the successful launch of Macnamara’s first release earlier this year and gives interested buyers three ways to become part of the community,” Mr Mills-Smith said. “We’ll have land available through our usual ballot process as well as a range of unique ‘Brindabella View’ blocks to be sold by auction. “Our GX Display Village builders will also

have a range of house and land packages on offer for buyers who are looking for a turnkey solution.” Macnamara is the first Canberra suburb where all homes will meet a minimum 7-Star Energy Rating, but Mr Mills-Smith said along with the sustainable aspects, it’s the location that sets it apart. Site tours will be available over three weekends from 5 June, giving all potential buyers the opportunity to explore the area. “Once complete, Macnamara residents will also be able to take advantage of community food gardens, nearby dog parks, open spaces like Strathnairn’s Paddys Park and tracks in the conservation corridor,” he said.

‘Charlotte’ apartments in Woden now available

YWCA Canberra calls on new PM to prioritise women’s housing security

Woden Town Centre is set to soon be completely “redefined” with the release and beginning of construction of DOMA’s latest residential precinct. Building started last week on The Melrose, and its neighbouring residential building, the Charlotte, now has apartments publicly available for purchase. Colliers Director Residential, Shane Radnell, said “buyers have been acting quickly to make sure they don’t miss out on the opportunity to secure a home within this precinct, which includes The Melrose and the neighbouring Charlotte apartment buildings”. “We are very pleased to be publicly releasing the Charlotte to the market. Demand for quality homes in this popular town centre is strong. DOMA’s Alexander

While congratulating Anthony Albanese on his election win, leading ACT community services provider, YWCA Canberra, is urging him to “make good” on pre-election announcements for women’s housing stability. YWCA Canberra say they’ve been witnessing a growing number of Canberrans requesting their services, including domestic violence support, and housing services for women and their families. “Demand for our services during COVID-19 increased significantly, particularly among women living with violence and older women experiencing housing crisis,” said CEO of YWCA Canberra, Frances Crimmins. “And it’s not just those already living in poverty. For some time, we have witnessed increased demand for our services among people in steady employment or in conventional housing tenure, who can no longer keep pace with the cost of living,” she said. YWCA Canberra previously welcomed campaign announcements from the Australian Labor Party, which might assist to alleviate pressures on women and families

& Albermarle development across the road quickly sold out and there are only a handful of apartments still available in The Melrose,” Mr Radnell said. “Following an overwhelming response to the VIP launch of the Charlotte, nearly 70 per cent of apartments have already been snapped up by repeat customers of DOMA and those that expressed their early interest in the development. “The project has been very well received by those buyers looking to take advantage of the ACT Government stamp duty exemption for dwellings under $600,000.” The Charlotte display suite is available for viewing Monday to Friday 11am4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm. Prices begin from $381,900.

living on low to modest incomes, including: • Proposed reforms of the early learning system and lifting the childcare subsidy rates which would result in substantial cost savings for parents. • Plans to build 30,000 new social and affordable housing properties, 4,000 of which would be set aside for women escaping domestic and family violence, and older women facing retirement poverty. • $1 million towards crisis accommodation and five additional frontline workers to help women escaping violence in Canberra. “These are significant reforms that will go some way to reducing the complexity and cost to parents using early learning services and to lifting the supply of new dwellings which will become homes to the growing number of Australians experiencing housing insecurity,” Ms Crimmins said. “We welcome these initiatives as important investments in Australia’s future and look forward to monitoring progress and outcomes throughout the next term of parliament.”

Cool urban design Phillip 405/35 Furzer Street A cool urban apartment at its finest, this north-facing, two-bedroom home in Phillip is nestled in the iconic Alexander & Albemarle (A&A) complex, and is truly unlike anything else in Canberra. The exposed brick oozes a New York City vibe, while the sundrenched living space and bedrooms provide brightness and warmth from the double-glazed, generous windows and balcony doors. The owners have decked the apartment out with top-of-the-range appliances and upgrades, including reverse cycle air conditioning, upgraded bathroom fixtures and finishes, a Smeg pyrolytic oven, and an induction cooktop.

The high-end complex features an exclusive rooftop pool with incredible views, a beautiful garden space, and a shared BBQ area for all residents to enjoy. Agent Justin Ingram says the style of this home is “industrial/converted warehouse” and is located right in the geographical heart of Canberra. “Without a doubt, the most favourite part of this apartment is the ceiling height, exposed pipes, vents, and the concrete ceiling. It creates such an industrial feel, almost like the converted warehouses in inner city Melbourne,” says Mr Ingram. “The A&A development is unlike any other in Canberra, as it was a refurbished building, rather than

a new apartment build. Even once all the other new developments are completed in three to five years, the internal design of this apartment will continue to be so unique. “It is also on the end of Level 4, so you only share one wall with another apartment, while also having windows and doors on two sides.” If that wasn’t enough, there’s a plethora of restaurants, cafes, and Westfield Woden, right at your doorstep.

Kylie will experience considerable changes in both her personal and public lives as developments take her into new or even uncharted territory. Her experiences will deepen her understanding of herself and also of someone very close to her, and may even contribute to a set of fresh values and a new understanding of the importance of both personal and financial investments. A new public image will evolve as a result.

a degree of focus on your past may bring back fond memories or even a reunion. you will be busy and productive. monday’s Gemini new moon will kick-start a fresh chapter in may twins’ personal life, and a fresh work project or health schedule will appeal to june twins. you may enjoy a financial or ego boost.

Consider channelling excess energy into events, as you’ll have results to be proud of, especially in your personal life. just avoid a standoff this weekend. monday’s new moon encourages you to learn something new, travel and boost relationships. a work opportunity and the chance to improve your appearance will boost morale.

Get set to tackle a fresh schedule. this will revolve around a new job opportunity and, for some, around changes in your health schedule. If you are proactive about improving your daily routine, you can improve your self-esteem and your finances. you may be pleasantly surprised by news early in the week.

this is a lovely time for socialising. take the time to discuss your plans with those you love. see criticism as constructive rather than merely critical. monday’s new moon will kickstart a fresh phase in a key relationship or with your communications in general. you may wish to update a communications device or repair a vehicle.

this weekend’s mixture of restlessness and an earthy nesting quality may prove a little frustrating or distracting, and it’ll be in your interest to avoid arguments. However, you will find the perfect solution to disagreements through careful discussion. expect a fresh phase in your social life and with favourite groups and organisations.

you may throw caution to the wind, and this will be revitalising if you’ve planned your weekend, but if you have no true direction, you risk being swept up in agreements. monday’s Gemini new moon will deepen your understanding of shared areas such as duties and money. you may be ready to ensure fair play exists in current arrangements.

you’ll enjoy a reunion and the chance to review your circumstances and catch your breath. a fresh development in your personal life or family is on the way. be practical and realistic, as you will gain traction, so your life feels more light-hearted and varied. this weekend, you must avoid arguments. It’s a good week to make a fresh commitment.

an adventurous phase will take you outside your routine and could add perspective. this will be a busy week; your projects could blossom. monday’s Gemini new moon points to a fresh agreement or financial circumstance that could help you gain direction. you may need to review paperwork or career decisions in the process.

It’s an ideal weekend for a working bee to get things ship-shape in your environment and for socialising with friends and family. you’ll enjoy the sense that your ventures and projects are becoming more viable. a new interest could gain traction, but you must be patient with someone who can be a little vague or even evasive.

this is a good time for negotiations, so if you have agreements you must make, this is it! you’ll gain the information you need by having all the facts at hand. and, if you are looking for ways to re-establish a friendly atmosphere at home or with neighbours, you’ll find you can return to a less intense phase this week too. avoid gambling.

While you’ll thoroughly enjoy revisiting an old haunt or reuniting with someone you love, a degree of tension may persist. a fresh chapter is in the making in a domestic or personal context relating to plans that were put together a month ago. you’ll gain insight into your options at home and financially and may discover a perfect solution.

an upbeat atmosphere will bring you in touch with outgoing, adventurous people. you’ll enjoy de-stressing in a great environment and will welcome a new chapter that could broaden your horizons either literally, in the shape of travel, or through new ventures such as study and your projects. finances and work will merit careful analysis.

Create clarity, calm and control to live your best life.

FRIENDS Since coming to Canberra I have developed a really nice group of friends. It really helped me through my journey as a PhD student as there are lot of ups and downs that you face during the project. Being the first time away from my family, having a support system through my friends has been helpful and has kept me sane.

PAINTING

Photo Kerrie Brewer

I really enjoy painting. I used to paint in high school, and then as I got more into my studies, I just couldn’t continue it. After submitting my PhD thesis, I started trying to get back to do my painting. It’s a good stressbuster and makes me feel so happy when I create something.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS I really like exploring the outdoors, on nature trails and walks. Canberra is really good for that. I find the Mt Ainslie lookout amazing, just going to that spot helps lift my spirits. I do like Shepherd’s Lookout, it’s a really nice walk and a beautiful spot.

My favourite things

Dr Anukriti Mathur Postdoctoral Researcher, John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU Growing up in India, it was experiencing her own auto-immune disease symptoms at age 15 that led Anukriti down the path to solve the mysteries behind our immune system and inflammation. Motivated to better understand how the immune system functions, Anukriti started building her trajectory to becoming an immunologist. These days Anukriti goes by Doctor, having completed her PhD and masters in biotechnology, and is a research fellow right here in Canberra at the ANU. Dr Anukriti Mathur has just been awarded a Cancer Council ACT Research Grant for her project that is investigating the role of immune proteins in preventing and protecting against bowel cancer. Findings from this study will help to generate new diagnostic screening tools and immunotherapies for cancer.

COOKING I like cooking different cuisines, though mostly Indian. It’s really good to detach from daily life and let go of the research part of me. We usually host our friends, a chance to meet and cook together, talking and laughing. It’s a nice relaxing environment.

INSTAGRAM I also really love Instagram – scrolling through fashion particularly. What really attracts me is creativity. That is something common through science and art – what the mind can manifest. canberraweekly.com.au
