A very merry ‘Hephner the Alpaca’ Christmas

Forget Santa. Why not have your Christmas photograph taken with the “local” alpaca that sneezed on King Charles?

For several years, Hephner’s human family have run Christmas ‘Santa’ photographs with the alpaca and other animals at their Goulburn farm, Fletchers Ark Farmyard, in New South Wales.

Robert Fletcher said it began following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The children came up with the idea to do some Santa photos, so it started (with us) using an Apple iPhone on an iPhone stand, bluetoothing to the printer and then printing the photos,” he said.

“The first year we did maybe 100-odd families, and then last year we were close to 400.”

Mr Fletcher said people travelled from other parts of Australia, and sometimes internationally, to have their photograph taken with Hephner –who is, of course, named after the late Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner.

“People are travelling a couple of hours, sometimes more, for photos,” Mr Fletcher said

“A couple of his top (social media) followers have come for photos over the time.

“It’s just a fun thing to do.”

So how did Hephner, the 9-year-old alpaca, become such a superstar?

The Fletchers, which includes Robert’s wife, Jayne, and their three children, purchased him eight years ago to mate with their female alpaca.

“In the end, we bought him for his temperament because he was so quiet,” Mr Fletcher said.

He said from there, the children started bringing Hephner inside the house.

Mr Fletcher’s daughter then entered the alpaca into competitions at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, with much success.

The family also began taking him on visits to nursing homes, including Clare Holland House, in Barton.

“And the rest is history,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Never in a million years did I think that this is what I’d be doing today but, as far as I’m concerned, he’s one-in-a-million.”

While Mr Fletcher works off and on the farm, he said the visits with Hephner had “really taken off over the last few years”.

And now, to that infamous meeting (and sneezing) on King Charles outside the Australian War Memorial during the Royal visit to Canberra on 21 October.

“We arrived at around 9:30am and I think there were about 50 or 60 people lined up to get in and one of the security guards came up and said, ‘You probably won’t be able to get him in today’,” Mr Fletcher said.

“My initial thought on the day was, if we get there and take a photo of Charles in the distance, that would be a good enough sort of thing. Then I explained to the security guard that we had been to the war memorial before. We’d even stood up behind the judge’s bench at the Supreme Court just to demonstrate how quiet he was.

“So, when we got down there (AWM), he basically said ‘No, you’re right to go through’.”

It was the help of others that got the pair to the front of the barrier.

“We lined up down the bottom to start off with then a lady came along and said, ‘You’ll get a better view from up the top’, so everyone just took off. As people were running, they were saying, ‘Get near the alpaca because he’ll get a photo with the King, for sure’,” Mr Fletcher said.

“When we got up the top, it was quite crowded, but they let me in, so we pretty much had a front-row seat.”

It was Mr Fletcher’s first time meeting King Charles.

“He just asked who this was, I told him it was Hephner, and he asked what we did, and I said, ‘He’s like a support alpaca,’ Mr Fletcher said.

“Then he reached out to touch him on the nose and then Hephner sneezed. Had a bit of a laugh. Charles was sort of a bit taken aback.

“But it was just funny how it all happened because we’d been standing there for three hours waiting.

“Normally if he’s getting a bit bored I’ll rub his nose and play with his lip.

“I’m not surprised because alpacas do sneeze, but I was surprised it happened when it did.”

The Santa photographs can be booked here: trybooking.com/events/landing/1317953 You might even get to meet some of their other animals, which include pygmy goats, deer, miniature cows, Shetland ponies, llamas and other farmyard animals.

2025 ACT Young Australian of the Year shares passion for art and advocacy

Daniel Bartholomaeus, the 2025 ACT Young Australian of the Year, was taken by surprise when he received the award at the National Gallery of Australia last month, saying it “was a moment.”

“I sat there thinking I wasn’t going to win it,” he said.

“My jaw dropped, and the photographer took a picture, I was wide-eyed and had my hand over my mouth.”

The other nominees in the category were Dainere’s Rainbow co-founder Jarrett Anthoney, Concussion Australia founder Brendan Swan and Voice for youth’s Hayley Whatman.

Daniel is an artist and neurodiversity advocate. The 21-year-old, who lives with autism and ADHD (attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder), has had anxiety since he was young, and found school challenging, contributing to him developing depression.

During this time, he also had to deal with bereavement on several occasions.

Now, he is a mentor with The With Friends Initiative, a social group for young neurodivergent people and works with neurodivergent people through Daydream Machine to explore their interests and talents in music, arts and technology.

“If it wasn’t for the Daydream Machine, I don’t think I’d be where I am now. Daydream Machine has probably been the biggest part of my life,”

Daniel said.

You can also find him at the National Gallery of Australia on Sundays teaching art to others who live with a disability. He has also been involved with the United Nations, and Studio&, an inclusive art program for neurodivergent adults (aged 18-35).

Daniel said art had been part of his life “since I could pick up a pencil”.

“I’ve always been drawing. It’s a way of

relaxing and calming myself,” he said.

“When I was a kid, it was very difficult to express how I was feeling or what I was thinking in my head, I couldn’t speak well in kindergarten.

“Growing up, I was a highly anxious kid, and it became a calming mechanism and a way to express the way I’m feeling.”

When not creating art, he is at the gym.

“I’m very passionate about staying fit and healthy, it helps me cognitively and mentally and it makes me function as well,” Daniel said. Call or visit the website of Lifeline (13 11 14) or Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636).

Several things Trump should do

Firstly, I was appalled, though not surprised, by the horrible antisemitic torching of a synagogue in Melbourne. However, I have an idea that, if implemented, could go a long way in combating antisemitism in this country. I call on the Islamic community in Melbourne to contribute funds to rebuild this synagogue. What a wonderful message that would send!

Belated congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump. I worry about what he will do to Ukraine, but I

am quietly confident he will help bring peace to the Middle East through his steadfast support of Israel and the moderate Arab states. His anti-woke comments are most welcome and ooze common sense. His “drill, baby, drill” policy will once again see the US as a net exporter of energy and hopefully put an end to the mad rush by some countries, like Australia, into what is increasingly looking like a train wreck by blindly putting all our eggs in the renewable basket. He will hopefully help save Australia by doing so and arrest our rapidly decreasing standard of living.

He has promised to increase US defence expenditure, but at the same time, come down hard on Countries (like us) who refuse to pull our weight. We need to commit now to spending at least 3% of GDP on defence asap.

Trump probably needs to make an example of a country for not pulling

its weight—and what better country to single out than Keir Starmer’s Britain! Sir Keir has had the shortest political honeymoon of any Western leader in recent times—about one week, to be exact—and has started to implement policies, almost all of which (according to the London Telegraph) will greatly harm the UK (e.g., more solar in a country where the sun rarely shines and not increasing defence expenditure—it looks like the UK will mothball one of their two brand-new aircraft carriers). Their recent hostility toward Israel is also appalling, and they operate a two-tiered policing system. So, Donald—how about demanding that the UK government increase defence spending to 3% of GDP now, pull Britain out of the ICC, and set in motion an anti-woke agenda in government? You’ll be helping the UK help itself.

Trump could force the Poms to do

this by such measures as banning people such as British Foreign Minister David Lammy (a fierce and indeed vicious Trump critic) and other leftist woke luminaries from entering the US until the UK lifts its game. Trump can put lots of pressure on Sir Keir by (for example) temporarily abandoning all US cooperation with the UK on intelligence sharing and defence, thereby forcing the UK to spend more to defend itself and to stop the sad decline of what was, until recently, a strong middle power with a strong moral compass.

Trump has the potential to save the West from its own decadent decline. He is, however, unpredictable, and that horrible streak of isolationism in him and many Americans is worrying. If nothing else, Australia needs to pull its weight more in case the US turns in on itself. Our very survival as a free nation depends on it.

Canberra, a Space Odyssey

With all the recent paranoia about artificial intelligence (AI) – such as panic over job-stealing computers taking over the world - Canberra was way ahead of the curve and in 1974, hosted an AI symposium.

Before Alex and Siri were even a twinkle in the eye, Canberra’s CSIRO was discussing “AI and psychology”, and “AI and the real world”, with four overseas speakers. Remember, this is 1974 when flares and mood rings were around.

While Toshiba was releasing its first floppy disc drive, Canberra channelled 2001: A Space Odyssey, inviting computer science experts from the US, Canada and India to explore pattern and voice recognition. While the capabilities were basic, the concept was cutting-edge at the time.

Not only was Canberra exploring sci-fi concepts in the ‘70s, but in 1964, the CSIRO owned the most powerful computer in the country. Dubbed ‘Control Data 3600’, the supercomputer cost 1.5 million pounds (about $500 million in today’s money) and took up the

entire ground floor of CSIRO building 401C.

This “modern” computer has just turned 60 and today, it’s a dinosaur. Not exactly a handheld device, Control Data 3600 consisted of eight magnetic tape drives, a line printer and a paper tape device. It required an army of 10 research workers, eight numerical analysts and programmers, and eight people to create ‘punch cards’ (for Gen Z, think old-fashioned apps).

The old computer room still exists, albeit now furnished with modern tech. It sits in a nondescript building at the base of Black Mountain, with a stream flowing beneath it.

Someone who remembers its futuristic heyday is CSIRO retirement fellow Robert Bell, who was a grad student there in 1967.

“It was a matter of getting punch cards and having them air freighted to Canberra to run the program,” Mr Bell said. “The output went back to magnetic tape and then back to printout. If you were fortunate, you’d have a one-day turnaround. When it was reading punch cards, it did nothing else. When it was printing on the printer, it did nothing else. The machine did one thing at a time.”

was ahead of its time, discussing artificial intelligence in the’70s and owning the most powerful computer in Australia in the

Again, Canberra led the way by inventing DAD, an acronym for Drums and Display, which enabled higher output (kind of like when we got Broadband in the 2000s). DAD was so good it was exported to the US.

“When they built DAD, they could actually interact with the machine,” Robert said. “They had visual displays so they could view things and they could store data on the machine. That was the key breakthrough, this was pioneering work.”

Canberra was like Silicon Valley. While Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide made do with Data 3200 computers, they would become overloaded, so work had to be transferred to Canberra.

Summer of cars: Summernats security questioned

for workers at an otherwise quiet time of the year,” he said.

Stakeholders of the Summernats 37 event have been questioned as to how the security will hold up for the 2025 event.

The 2024 event was marred by antisocial behaviour, including on-site fights and hoon driving off-site.

Video also emerged of an apparent brawl between security guards and attendees at Summernats.

When questioned by journalists at the media launch at Waves Carwash in Braddon on 2 December about security, Summernats head of marketing and communications Adrian Hodgson said event security and safety were constantly reviewed.

He said following the 2024 event, the organisers sought advice from an external expert, which resulted in a switch of providers.

“They conducted a thorough security operations audit of the business that’s resulted

He said organisers also worked closely with ACT Policing and the ACT Government.

Mr Hodgson said police would permanently be in the control room throughout the event.

“So, when the decisions need to be made or responses need to happen, they’re right next to us in the control room and we work collaboratively with them to make decisions to deliver the event safely,” he said.

Business, arts and creative industries minister Michael Pettersson said the behaviour at this year’s event was unacceptable.

“Antisocial behaviour is not acceptable. The scenes that we saw earlier this year are not on,” he said.

Mr Pettersson said Summernats injected $43 million into Canberra’s economy.

“That is $43m going into small and local businesses, hotels, restaurants, it provides work

A passerby made a negative comment about Summernats during the media conference.

Summernats 37 will run at Exhibition Park from 2-5 January.

It will include custom show cars, a burnout competition, a performance trade show, cruising, horsepower demonstrations, food and live music.

First prize for the Summernats Pro Burnout is $50,000, with second and third place bringing the prize pool to $70,000.

The bands performing are headliners Jet, alongside fellow Australian rock bands Eskimo Joe and Thirsty Merc. This will be followed by a mashup of music set by Hot Dub Time Machine.

Thirty never-before-seen custom cars will be unveiled at Exhibition Park on Thursday 2 January. There will be 400 cars on display during the city cruise.

Your guide to Canberra’s best Christmas lights 2024

Christmas is just around the corner and Canberra is lighting up with some breathtaking displays.

With special thanks to Christmas Light Search, check out this curated list of standout displays, or venture into your own neighbourhood to discover hidden gems that will brighten your holiday season.

Canberra Northside Christmas light displays

Forde

Huddy Street is a must-visit for Christmas lights lovers, with the entire street getting into the festive spirit—there’s even a food truck! The street features a beautiful display of decorations and lights to keep the kids entertained. You’ll find singing Santas, the Grinch, and other cartoon characters, including ones from Star Wars. Take a stroll down the drive and enjoy the lights and sounds.

Ngunnawal

It’s always nice when a few houses come together to create a beautiful display of festive lights and the cul-de-sac at the end of Burraly Court has done exactly that. Well worth a look.

Beela Place’s whole front and side is intricately decorated with colourful lights, Christmas statures and festive music to listen to as you explore the walk-around displays.

Elischer Street also has a number of colourful lights, lasers and light decorations to feast your eyes on.

Dunlop

14 Percy Begg Circuit in Canberra boasts one of the city’s best Christmas light displays.

Highlights include a sleigh with falling snow, an impressive indoor collection of decorations, a Santa letterbox, and fundraising for ACT Pet Crisis Support—a must-visit.

Triton Street has several houses with Christmas light displays, so make a night of exploring everything they have to offer. From inflatables, colourful lights covering the house, room and trees, music playing and moving decorations, there’s plenty to help you enjoy the Christmas cheer.

The roof display and huge garden display of inflatables at Hobday Place are also not to be missed, plus there are ample locations for photos, like the arches by the garage.

Scurry Street often has multiple houses lighting it up, but this one particular house has a multitude of lights and inflatables, and being a corner house, it’s enjoyed by all those passing by.

Ainslie

You can’t miss the large display of inflatables at Foveaux Street, including Santa, elves and gingerbread men, plus plenty of colourful lights. The large display is active all day, too, as the owners love to spread happiness and cheer.

Canberra Southside Christmas light displays

Fisher

As one of the best places to see Christmas lights this year, Fisher has numerous Christmas light displays on offer. You can’t miss Ballarat Street with its bright and colourful display, perfect for families to explore every nook and cranny. With inflatables, statues and inflatables, all donations support the Starlight Foundation. Also in Fisher, check out the sparkly

Australian animal inflatables at Ardlethan Street, with its arch to take photos under.

Gowrie

Stop by one of the best displays at Middleton Circuit, featuring thousands of lights, lasers and window displays. Walk through the festive setup and purchase handmade gifts and treats, with Kay’s Christmas shop, and Kay’s renowned Rocky Road, open every night from 1 to 23 December, and all donations support local cancer charities.

While there, also make sure to head over to Ruthven Street, with it being one of the largest solar light displays in Australia! Walk around, dance to festive music and support the owners’ chosen cause of multiple sclerosis.

Gordon

Gordon is a good spot for Christmas light lookers, with one house in particular sure to wow kids and adults alike down at Callaway Crescent! This year the lights flow down from the side of the house and disperse out into the garden.

Oxley

The stunning light display at Newman-Morris Circuit features a light show that is synchronised to music, so you can sing and dance while you take in the dazzling lights, that use over 46,000 LED pixels. With lit-up arches, stars, candy canes, snowflakes, trees and a large matrix, it’s a great display for all ages!

Conder

All the lights at Eaglemont Retreat are synchronised to Christmas music, so make sure to tune into 93.5FM while here. Up and close, there are also singing props for the kids, like Bluey and Minions figures.

Thanks to Lachlan from Christmas Light Search for providing us with this list and images to share with our readers. Visit christmaslightsearch.com. au/canberra or scan the QR code to see more.

Cranky & Sons: Masters of Paint and Plaster

Cranky & Sons is a homegrown Canberra business with over 50 years of experience shared between Sean and his team. Sean is here to help Canberra and surrounds with all their painting and plastering needs.

How long have you been working in the industry? How did you get started?

I have been in the trade for over 17 years and first got started in plastering through a school-based program. I started painting on and off with my dad. From there, I did an apprenticeship in plastering and have been gaining more and more certs ever since, including a Cert 4 in Building and Construction

What do you love about your job?

My favourite part of the job is being able to do lots of different types of jobs, in lots of different locations in and around Canberra.

What do you consider to be the most challenging aspect of your work? How do you overcome these challenges?

When things start going wrong, it often ends up being one problem after another. In those situations, I will take a deep breath and take it one problem at a time.

What are the latest trends shaping your industry?

In painting, we are getting a lot of fresh, clean looks, taking a whole area back to white or light colours. In plastering, we are similarly seeing the modern, clean look of square set plaster.

What can clients expect when they engage with you for your services?

We are a friendly, small, family business, so you don’t have too many people to deal with.

We try to be up front in what you can and can’t expect out of a job, and to provide alternative suggestions when faced with the latter. If you have a problem, we’re happy to help try and fix it.

What is your biggest highlight so far? What are you most proud of?

The biggest highlight of my job is being able to help so many people. We have been able to give back to the community, supporting local magazines, law enforcement, and veterans. We are a major sponsor to the Canberra's bush rugby club, The Hall Bushrangers, as well as a little champ by the name of Paige Cole, who rode for Australia in BMX.

What are your company’s core values?

We pride ourselves on keeping it clean while doing a great job. We are always happy to have a chat to see how we can help.

How do you improve clients’ homes?

We try to help improve clients’ homes with updated looks, as well as preserving heritage where wanted/needed. Our improvements range from fixing up small patches, to renos, to full house paint jobs from the inside out. We try to help in any areas we can.

Working in Canberra, what do you love about it?

It’s great to work close to home, but we are also happy to travel surrounding regions.

We love having everything we need close by and also seeing our clients out and about.

How can people get in touch?

Visit our website cranky-and-sons.com.au/, or our Facebook page facebook.com/CrankyNSons for more information. Email or call us anytime and we will get back to you as quick as we can.

Give the gift of timeless elegance with a pink diamond

Celebrate this Christmas with the gift of a pink diamond piece of jewellery. Each piece is unique and special as these are the rarest and most valuable and sought-after diamonds on the planet.

Now that our Australian Argyle mine has been mined out and closed (November 2020), these are the only ones available for sale and cannot be replaced. The value of pink diamonds has doubled and tripled over the years, and many are sold to be locked away as investments.

Or you might prefer to buy an unset diamond and with our help, design your own

piece to be made up in our workshop. We can incorporate parts of your older pieces that you haven’t worn in years and make something completely new and fresh whilst incorporating a sentimental attachment.

Here at Thompson Bespoke, we can provide a complete design and manufacturing service, with a valuation provided for any of the pieces we offer for sale.

We can incorporate Australian chocolate diamonds and high-quality white diamonds into the mix, or add in some Australian South Sea pearls, of which we keep an extensive collection from Kailis and Autore.

With 30 years of experience in Canberra in Briolette where Diana was half owner and Travis was a Master Jeweller for 15 years, there is plenty of knowledge and expertise as our satisfied customers will attest to.

Only a tiny percentage of ladies in the world can ever own a pink diamond in their lifetime, so come and join the club.

Creating a happy holiday season for separated families

For separated parents, the holiday season can bring challenges, including sharing time with children, travel plans, and ensuring both sides of the family can share in the holiday experience. With a focus on the wellbeing of the children, it’s important to prioritise cooperation and practical planning, making the season enjoyable for everyone involved.

Focus on the kids: putting their wellbeing first

When planning holiday time, the goal is to create experiences that you and your children will enjoy and remember fondly. This can sometimes be extra complicated when juggling time between both parents and even extended relatives. Open communication, flexibility, and cooperation can go a long way in ensuring your child feels loved and supported throughout the holidays.

Plan ahead: update your parenting plan

Make sure your parenting plan is up to date and addresses holiday time specifically. If it doesn’t, now is the time to review it with your co-parent and make necessary adjustments.

When overseas travel is involved, doublecheck that your existing arrangements permit international trips. If not, you may need to obtain

consent from your co-parent or legal advice and support to help facilitate travel. Always avoid booking non-refundable flights before securing the necessary permissions. Flexibility is key— offering makeup time with the other parent when your child is away with you can ease any concerns and foster goodwill.

Travel tips: communication is essential

Sharing your travel plans with your co-parent (where it is safe to do so) well in advance can help prevent misunderstandings and avoid conflict. Make sure to provide detailed information about your itinerary, where you will be staying, and how your child can be contacted while travelling.

Safety first: prioritise wellbeing and prepare for the unexpected

While the focus of the holidays is often on fun and relaxation, safety should always come first. Make sure your child is travelling with comprehensive travel insurance and familiarise yourself with the medical facilities and local regulations at your destination.

For some parents, the cost-of-living crisis may create additional concerns around travel expenses. This is where flexibility comes

in—whether it’s finding a compromise on who covers certain travel costs or agreeing to local trips instead of overseas travel, there are creative ways to keep the holidays enjoyable without breaking the bank. A staycation can offer much-needed downtime and opportunity for home-made fun!

Creating memories for your children

Whether it’s through special trips, fun family traditions, or simply spending quality time together, it’s helpful to focus on happiness and wellbeing. Working together with your coparent to plan a balanced holiday schedule can ensure that your children feel secure and loved, no matter where they spend their time.

We're here to help

At Parker Coles Curtis, we understand that organising holiday time for separated families can be complex and it needs to be tailored for each family situation. Our highly skilled team offer guidance with compassion and care, ensuring your holidays are as stress free as possible.

Step in the right direction: Eco-friendly flooring from Terry Bros Carpet Court

As we become increasingly aware of our impact on the environment, many of us are looking for ways to make our homes more sustainable. One simple yet effective way to do this is by choosing eco-friendly flooring for your home. Terry Bros Carpet Court, with stores in Fyshwick and Phillip, is leading the way in sustainable flooring options that are not only better for the planet, but also provide exceptional comfort and quality.

Carpet Court's commitment to reducing their carbon footprint is evident in their extensive range of eco-friendly carpets. From natural fibres like wool to synthetic carpets made from nylon waste

and plastic bottles, there's a sustainable option to suit every style and budget.

But eco-friendly flooring options don't stop at carpet. Engineered timber flooring is another sustainable option that's gaining popularity. Unlike solid timber flooring, engineered timber conserves precious hardwood timber by using only around one-third as much hardwood. Our engineered flooring is second to none, with lots of colours, tones and styles to choose from.

The attractive 'Native Squared' engineered flooring collection, for example, is available in Jarrah, Iron Bark, Brush Box, Sydney Blue

Gum, Spotted Gum and Blackbutt.

To complement our eco-friendly flooring options, we also offer UltraPet carpet underlay, which is specially formulated to provide superior comfort underfoot and outstanding durability. UltraPet features StainShield, a multilayered high-density polyethylene barrier that helps to protect against common household spills and pet stains. It's also treated with Dunlop Fresh-Living, a proven antimicrobial that helps to prevent odours and provides hygienic freshness for your home. Plus, it's proudly Australian made from 100% environmentally friendly recyclables and is guaranteed by

Dunlop for the life of your carpet. The team at Terry Bros Carpet Court is passionate about helping homeowners create sustainable and comfortable living spaces. With their extensive range of eco-friendly flooring options, expert advice, and commitment to reducing their carbon footprint, they're the perfect partner for anyone looking to elevate their home with sustainable style. And, with the Christmas break just around the corner, you can rest assured that our stores will only be closed on public holidays. Visit Terry Bros Carpet Court today and discover the benefits of ecofriendly flooring for yourself.

Put some love into 2025 and come to the ‘Unconditional’ exhibition on love at Tuggeranong Arts Centre

Unconditional is an upcoming exhibition examining love in its many forms… joyful yet painful, lifeaffirming yet difficult, diverse yet universal to the human condition.

Visit Unconditional by awardwinning local artist John Brookes and explore the many nuances of love and how - whilst love can bring joy and happiness - it has a deeper, more self-reflective side: a truly complex emotion. The diversity of exhibition works and subjects will reflect the multiple qualities of love - images will use photography, painting, charcoal, digital media, ink on wood, and 3D installation.

Unconditional will argue that we are all different yet united by love - partners (wherever they are on the rainbow), parents and children,

an indigenous person for Country, a nurse and patient, an owner for their dog, bittersweet memories of friendships lost…

Love is becoming stifled by trends equating love with overdependence or inequality in a society that increasingly equates living alone as empowering. We are losing our awareness of its value and power.

John Brookes, the artist, states: “This exhibition is important as there is still room for genuine feelings of love in an increasingly isolated society. One that interacts remotely through social media and technology. Love is fundamental in making us human, and we need to preserve it whilst embracing new technologies, cultural and identity politics.”

“As a viewer of these works, visitors have, in my opinion, a role equal to my own in giving these works meaning.

“Therefore, I invite the whole community to submit works on what love means to them – feeling free to express themselves in terms of interpretation, experience and media used (JPG for images, Word for prose). All submissions will feature on our online gallery and at the venue. Submissions can be made now to the contacts below.

“I hope you find connection somewhere in these works and if not, simply enjoy the artwork. I love you.”

Fresh fish & seafood for Christmas!

Imagine a centrepiece of fresh, cooked prawns and crab with freshly shucked oysters and delicious seafood sauce, a smoked salmon salad wreath or baked whole fish on rice, drizzled with garlic lemon sauce ...

FishCo typically sells around seven tonnes of fresh seafood every Christmas, with fresh stock arriving every day.

“Years ago, you couldn’t get fresh fish in Canberra shops,” says Nicholetta Rigano, daughter of FishCo owners, John and Anthoula Fragopoulos, “fishmongers would only get their stock every Monday from Sydney Fish Markets.”

“We had a takeaway shop called Sunset and Dad was frustrated that he couldn’t offer actual fresh fish to cook for the customers, so he got a van and started doing the run to Sydney every two days.” When customers started coming for the fresh fish instead of the cooked takeaway, Trata Fresh Seafoods was born, which ultimately became FishCo Fish Market.

John and his family have now been bringing fresh fish and seafood to Canberra for over 40 years. They have offered wholesale for 30 years, with cold-chain

logistics that enable them to buy stock directly from trawlers and suppliers around the country.

FishCo has developed a reputation for great customer service, including a ‘try before you buy’ policy for fresh oysters and cooked prawns, cleaning your whole fish for free, and offering free ice. Follow them on Facebook for recipes and tips.

“Christmas is our favourite time of year. Stock keeps coming in through one door and customers through the other! We’ve got the little grandkids handing out baskets at the door and, some years, we’ve had customers lined up down the street – but they all get great customer service and a chance to taste their prawns. It’s a great vibe!”

If you want to buy your fish and seafood early on Christmas Eve, FishCo will be open from 5am. Expect a variety of fresh prawns and oysters and lots of fresh fish.

“We wish all our wonderful customers a wonderful festive season.”

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Life’s ups and downs are best shared with true friends. You know you’re with people who are good for you when you feel free to do you -- no need to pretend you’re feeling better or worse than you really are. They soften hard situations and make wonderful experiences more vivid.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

You’re attracted to the people who can most help you. The best part is, you don’t need to know much about them, it’s completely intuitive. People you like will like you back and be good for you, too. As a river flows to the sea, a match of values will flow naturally to a confluence of interests.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21)

BRAIN BUSTERS

1 In Italy, what type of food are you eating if you eat trofie?

2 On which date did the First Fleet land in Australia in 1788?

3 Vitamin B3 is often known by what name starting with N?

4 In medical terms, what is the most common meaning of ECG?

5 Who knocked Novak Djokovic out of the 2024 US Open Tennis Championships?

A little good fortune becomes a lot so lean into the momentum. It starts with an alignment of what you want to do and what you have to do. The work is easy and fun, so all you have to do is keep it up because it’s the repetition that matters most, results will multiply into something remarkable.

CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 22)

Stay aware of qualities you bring to the table of life. If your No. 1 fan is you, you’re in a good position. If you’re concerned about sounding conceited, keep your self-care, admiration and celebration private. The key is not to bother fitting in. Trust the ways you are different – elevate the scene.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Our attractions often have something to do with unfinished business. If we hurt in a particular way, it is normal to be drawn in to learn how to avoid, conquer or tolerate that dynamic so it no longer impedes our progress. It’s all about learning lessons and processing unresolved emotion.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Every day, in some small way, you are new. People who know you in a certain role will be slow to adapt to your current iteration. They only see who you were when the kinship was being established. Adding new people to your social world enforces your growth into the person you want to be.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 23)

Your heart is set on a destination. See it, articulate its features, and give into its magnetism. You’ll also need more momentum. It always helps to be positioned at the top of a downhill slope. What can you do to clear obstacles and illuminate friction? The smoother the path, the faster you’ll go.

SCORPIO (OCT. 24-NOV. 21)

The problems were not all yours, but you had to solve them anyway because life is, among other things, unfair. Taking on those responsibilities gave you skill, knowledge and strength. Focus on your most important relationship -- the one you have with yourself.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Though there’s much that’s working in your life, you’re planning an escape from one particular scene. At times you can feel it in your bones. Planning an escape doesn’t mean abandoning everything; it could be as simple as carving out small sanctuaries in your day.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You may feel a little stuck in the current chapter, but that feeling is not going to last forever. Even as you meet your responsibilities, you’re laying the groundwork for something bigger. Think of this as your preparation time. Keep that vision of freedom alive; it’s your compass.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

There was a time you wouldn’t have been able to express your thoughts and wishes with the clarity you achieve now. Such an indicator, though subtle, is a testament to the growth that matters most to you. Don’t wait until you hit the obvious markers to celebrate your progress.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Your motivations change, it’s good to know where they stand so you can find the best ways to inspire yourself. Try new things -Free trials are best or consider a small investment. Maybe the thing that most helps you stay on track with your goals costs money. You never know until you try.

The band - Ryan, guitarist Scarlett McKahey, drummer Neve van Boxsel and bass player Jaida Stephenson – formed in Canberra in 2015.

Ryan said the name came from one of McKahey’s father’s friends, “Who was trying to come up with the most ridiculous band names they could think of.”

“We were just like ‘it’s definitely something people will remember’ - and it just felt right.

“We didn’t realise we’d have it for the next 10 years of our lives but I’m glad it’s stuck.”

As previously reported in CW, the bandmembers, who were all 15 at the time, were inspired to form in 2015 after watching the School of Rock movie at a sleepover. They all attended Orana Steiner School in Weston.

When asked about the highlights of the band’s almost 10 years, Ryan referred to the last

week (or so) alone, at the time of interview.

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers won an ARIA on 20 November, played a set at The Canberra Wave against coal and gas protest outside Parliament House on 27 November and supported 90s American rockers Pearl Jam on their recent Australian tour, and now USA.

“I feel like we’ve had a lot of highlights just in the last week, so that’s definitely up there,” Ryan said.

“We weren’t expecting to win an ARIA, that was just something we were striving for. It was crazy.

“I’m trying to not watch videos back and just remember it how I remember it - instead of watching it back and thinking ‘Oh my gosh, why did I say that?’”

The band have also been the support act for the Foo Fighters at a Melbourne show in 2023.

“It’s just unreal. It’s just crazy that we’ve been given this awesome opportunity,” Ryan said.

“I didn’t expect we’d ever be able to share a

stage with these bands I’ve known the names of my whole life. We feel really lucky.”

Ryan said after “cruising” through to the end of the year, the band planned to write and release more music.

“Hopefully we’ve got albums and albums in us,” they said.

“We’re keen to keep on doing more overseas stuff as well and expanding.”

Christmas theme at play for National Zoo animals

Christmas has come early for the animal residents at Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium.

For 12 days, from 7 December, zookeepers will give the animals Christmas-themed enrichment items. The zookeepers will also give talks each day.

It will culminate in the zoo’s first Christmas concert on the 19th.

Senior zookeeper Serena Robbie said enrichment was an important part of each animal’s day.

“It not only gets them active physically and mentally, but it also encourages them to use their natural behaviours they would use out in the wild,” Ms Robbie said.

She said the zookeepers enjoyed making

the enrichments.

“It’s really fun being able to come up with new and exciting things every single day,” Ms Robbie said.

“Watching the animals interact with our enrichments is quite rewarding as well.

“It’s really fun when it comes to the holidays and the festive time because we get to come up with some really fun, creative enrichment based on Christmas or Easter.”

She said the zookeepers aimed to keep the enrichment focused on the species, to incorporate things such as food, sight, visual audio and foraging.

Enrichment officer Sarah Howarth said the zookeepers put a lot of effort into the enrichments.

“We give our animals fun things to do, new things to experience, sights, smells, textures,” Ms Howarth said.

She said enrichment not only focused on the animals’ welfare and health but also their happiness and having a fun experience.

“We do enrichment all the time, every day, but around holidays we can make it a bit more festive and a bit more colourful just to give them something a bit different – and it looks awfully cute as well,” Ms Howarth said.

Endgame by Sarah Barrie HQ, $34.99

However, everything is about to come crashing down when her nemesis, the sadistic Vaughn, returns issuing a challenge. Five people are about to die and if Lexi can save one, he will turn himself in. So begins a chilling game that will push Lexi to the edge of sanity. Endgame is an exceptionally intense novel that takes the reader on a shocking ride. A powerful and gripping read to while away the break.

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang

Del Rey, $34.99

Your new holiday obsession is the fantasy novel Blood Over Bright Haven. Sciona has spent 20 years becoming the first female mage admitted to the High Magistry, but when she arrives, she encounters scorn from her male coworkers. Assigned only a janitor as an assistant, Sciona tries to prove herself. But her obsession to be the best leads to her uncovering a staggering magical conspiracy. Wang deeply impresses with this outstanding standalone novel that you won’t be able to turn away from. Brilliantly inventive, and loaded with shocking twists, this is one of the best fantasy books of 2024.

Revenge of Rome by Simon Scarrow

Headline,

$34.99

Finally, lovers of action can get lost in the amazing historical fiction novel Revenge of Rome this holiday season. Brittania, 61 AD. Boudica’s horde has been defeated, but the warrior queen is still free and fermenting further revolts. Desperate to end the threat Boudica poses, Rome assigns Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro to hunt her down. But Boudica is no easy target, and the Romans will have no peace until she is captured or killed. Scarrow continues to excel as the top author of Roman historical fiction, and Revenge of Rome is an epic and exciting read ideal for the beach or pool this summer.

Rumours (M)

After being introduced to the leaders of the seven wealthy democracies that form the intergovernmental political and economic forum known as the Group of 7 (G7), the group heads off to a gazebo to draft a provisional statement in response to an imminent global crisis. As night falls, the group discovers that they have been abandoned by their aides and must fend for themselves in the woods that may house an ancient evil.

The movie’s experimental filmmaking writer/directors attracted an ensemble cast for a farcical diplomatic meeting that morphs into a sci-fi horror. The hapless bureaucrats’ everyday work is exposed to be as vacuous as they are. Deluded as to their actual importance to the world around them, the group literally becomes lost in the woods as a non-descript

crisis rises around them.

Local audiences are spoiled for choice for political satire with such television shows as Utopia (2014-23), The Hollowmen (2008), and even The Chaser’s War on Everything (2006-2009) which skewers Australian politics accurately, authentically, and with a deep understanding of the subject matter. Rumours is broader and surface level, making the blunt statement that bureaucrats’ preoccupation with “busy work” makes them useless in real-world, practical scenarios. The movie instead leans further into absurdist elements, riffing off of The Exterminating Angel (1962) and the Kafkaesque stylings of Terry Gilliam (Brazil, 1985) in highlighting the ridiculousness of bureaucratic processes.

Verdict: A very odd mix of horror and absurdist political farce that may appeal to a niche audience.

Coping with Christmas from a mental health perspective

As Christmas and the end of the year approaches, many of us experience a mix of excitement and stress. The season brings warmth and togetherness, but it can also feel overwhelming. While the Christmas season is often joyful, it can also lead to pressure, anxiety, and sadness. The demands of shopping, planning gatherings, and navigating family dynamics can heighten stress. As a clinical psychologist, I’d like to share

some practical tips to help you navigate this time of year more smoothly, allowing you to focus on what truly matters.

The Christmas season often comes with high expectations. Families may feel the need to create the “perfect” celebration, leading to stress around gift-giving, event planning, and maintaining traditions. For those dealing with loss or change, these pressures can intensify feelings of sadness or loneliness. It’s also important to recognise that it’s perfectly okay not to celebrate Christmas at all. Several factors contribute to Christmas stress. Financial strain can be significant, as the costs of gifts, decorations, and festive meals add up quickly. This can create anxiety, especially for those already struggling financially. The Christmas season is often packed with social obligations,

Address: 36/21 Thynne St, Bruce, Canberra

Phone: 02 6225 2855

Email: reception@mydentistcanberra.com.au www.mydentistcanberra.au

from work parties to family gatherings, which can overwhelm you as you try to balance these commitments. Family dynamics can complicate things, bringing tensions to the surface, particularly if there are unresolved conflicts. The season can also evoke memories of lost loved ones or past disappointments, leading to feelings of grief or nostalgia.

Managing Christmas stress.

Firstly, embrace realistic expectations. Understand that not everything has to be perfect. Setting achievable goals for yourself—such as how many events to attend or how much decorating to do—can ease pressure. Open communication with your family about expectations can foster a more relaxed atmosphere. For instance, if you usually host a large gathering but find it overwhelming this year, consider

scaling back.

Self-care is crucial during the Christmas season. Make time for activities that uplift you, whether that’s enjoying a quiet evening with a book, going for a walk, or practising relaxation techniques like deep breathing. Prioritising self-care helps balance the hustle and bustle.

The season can bring up a mix of emotions, especially if you’re facing grief or loneliness. It’s important to acknowledge and accept these feelings rather than push them away. If you feel overwhelmed, consider talking to someone you trust—a friend, family member, or psychologist. Sharing your feelings can provide relief and perspective. If you’re feeling isolated, seek out opportunities to connect with others.
