Earlier this year, I was invited to join Mentor Walks, a not-for-profit that runs early morning walks during which aspiring women and female leaders from diverse backgrounds have career conversations about anything. Due to freezing conditions back in June, my first ‘walk’ transformed into a buzzing café meetup at a cosy venue in the city. My first actual walk took place last week on a brisk spring morning around Lake Burley Gri n, where numerous mentors and more mentees took positive steps to exchange knowledge and make meaningful connections. After our hour-long walk and talk, I headed for work feeling uplifted, inspired and reinvigorated.Regrettably, for too long I believed that old cliché that all women see one another as competition. In recent years, I’ve become aware of so many wonderful women who are happy or determined to mentor others in their career paths, or in life. My 21st century experience is that the sisterhood is alive and well. Indeed, it’s thriving! Reasons to be grateful this past week include a stimulating Mentor Walk, the sensational local talent on show in Free-Rain’s production of My Fair Lady at The Q, the 2022 CAPO (Capital Arts Patrons Organisation) launch event acknowledging the philanthropy of local businesses and arts patrons who support our region’s artistic community, a family Father’s Day celebration, roasted brussels sprouts, and inky clouds daubed across a melon sky above the deep blue Brindabellas at dusk. Take care, 58

An exhibition at Floriade this month will encourage Canberra to set a world record and throw down the gauntlet to others.

Only 9 per cent of plastic waste (227,000 tonnes) is sent for recycling, and 84 per cent (2.1 million tonnes) is sent to landfill, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2020); while only 2 per cent of recycled plastic gets back into circulation, Ms Addicoat notes.

Last year, Ms Addicoat realised that polyethylene products like plastic lids, bottles, and bags were made from the same plastic as melted beads, a children’s craft toy.

You or I might chuck that maroon shampoo bottle in the recycling; Ms Addicoat cuts it up, melts it in her sandwich press … and five minutes later, voilà! An A4 craft sheet. That craft sheet might become a lamp, a platter or dipping bowl in a 17-piece entertaining set, a cake platter, or a cameo brooch.

“Polyethylene is the world’s biggest plastic problem on the planet purely by volume,” she explains.Themost made plastic, it comprised 32 per cent of plastic waste in 2020 – and, with the fastest growing production rate (2.7 per cent), it is expected to reach half of all plastics within the next decade.

Tomato sauce bottles, mustard bottles, gold milk lids, and children’s plastic beads become a placemat with a gecko design – a translucent gecko: hold it up to a light, and it glows with new colours.

Canberra solving plastic problem

“It was, accidentally, a world first,” she said. “I looked at what other people were doing with their waste polyethylene. There are a few wobbly bowls out there; that’s about it other than the commercial recycled plastic – which is very expensive equipment, not everyday stuff. “As a designer, it’s the most interesting, versatile, and vibrant material I’ve ever worked with. It’s so quick, so easy, so safe, so almost organic in the way things can Polyethylenelook.”is not toxic, and has been used in 3D printers, as well as by children, for decades, Ms Addicoat explains.

“dire environmental nuisance” can be made into “beautiful, purposeful or practical items”.

Canberra could become the first city in the world to design with plastic, designer Candice Addicoat believes. She has pioneered a world-first technique to turn polyethylene plastic into art and household items – but envisages a time when nearly everything is made from recycled PE plastic.

Part of the world record initiative is to get a mini plastic shredder for each school and a bank of shredders at community centres to make shredded plasticWoodwork teachers could become polywork teachers, working with a 100 per cent recyclable material, while children could collect plastics in their favourite colours, swap them at school, and make their own lolly dishes, cupcake holders, and party hats at birthdays. A bigger shredder can make two tonnes of plastic a day. The same facility could make planks and sheets of plastic that could be building material for city renewal projects, school desktops, bus shelters, benches, or tactile paving for blind people at traffic stops.

SCENE refurbishes community organisations, housing estates, and care facilities, turning socalled junk into art and furniture. Ms Addicoat is putting free videos of her junk décor workshops online for the community to access. They are suitable for all ages and abilities, from beginners, children, people with special needs, and the aged to DIY enthusiasts, artists, and designers.

- Nick Fuller Full story online.

Since PE plastic takes up the exact texture of other materials (stone, granite, glass, or metal), a non-slip sample could become garden pavers, garden paths, or a retaining wall, and be embedded with solar-powered LEDs to make a glowing feature at night-time.“We’vegot so much stuff lying around,” Ms Addicoat says. “It’s almost going back to the beginning when there were trees, rocks, clay, and sand lying around, and we just picked them up and created. … I feel it’s going to be an age of innovation andForcreation.”moreinformation, visit Plastic Static, a platform to share ideas, pictures, techniques, and facts about used PE plastic. The website is part of the PlastiSCENE program, a recycled plastic initiative of Ms Addicoat’s community improvement and engagement charity, SCENE.

“As a whole community, from entertaining at home, construction, and creation at school, to planks and sheets for making cubbyhouses or doghouses, up to building materials, the whole community could use a lot more than we’re recycling,” Ms Addicoat says.

Unstopped, that plastic is bad news for the environment – but Ms Addicoat believes this

Polyethylene binds well with other unrecycled material: glass or metal (to make cake stands); paper (an old National Geographic makes a five-piece Incan set); or waste fabric (to make waterproof handbags, shoes, outdoor furniture coverings, or awnings).Herexhibition at Floriade, Plasticus Botanica (the plastic garden), will showcase bigger artworks: the large, backlit native botanicals she has made with the Strong Aboriginal Women’s Group: waratah lamps or illuminated wattle bushes, for instance. She hopes visitors will go home realising what they can do with plastic and set a brand-new record for using recycled polyethylene.

The ACT Jobs and Skills Forum was one of more than a hundred forums and round tables held around the country. This is an extraordinary effort from everyone who participated, and it demonstrated the genuine desire across Australia to come together and work collaboratively for the common good. It is a shame that the Federal Liberal Party refused to attend in any capacity, seemingly for miscalculated politics of division rather than for the national interest.

The National Jobs and Skills Summit was a success. It set a clear direction for the work we can do to build a stronger economy with 36 initiatives for immediate action to benefit all Australians. Skills Ministers across the country collaborated to provide funding for 180,000 fee-free TAFE places in 2023 for highest priority skills needs, such as aged care. One thousand digital apprenticeships were confirmed for the Australian Public Service, and improved jobs and training pathways for women, First Nations people, regional Australians, and culturally and linguistically diverse people wereToannounced.helpaddress workforce shortages, Aged Pensioners seeking to work can earn an additional $4,000 over this financial year without impacting their pension. There is still further work to do, and we will continue down the path of cooperation and collaboration so that all Australians benefit from a strong economy. the key to Australian jobs

The Forum brought together business groups, unions, higher education representatives, civil society, and governments to address shared economic challenges and opportunities. As the Forum proved, Canberra has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the jobs and skills space to help inform government.

The Forum focused on a range of issues including sustainable productivity, participation, skills and training, migration, boosting job security, and lifting wages, among others. It was encouraging to see the range of delegates getting together to work constructively on these challenges and opportunities facing the ACT labour market andAeconomy.notableconsensus was the benefits immigration can bring to the ACT economy but that it was essential that such employees are treated fairly and free from discrimination. It was also positive that both employer groups and unions agreed that we need to upskill and support apprentices in emerging clean energy sectors, such as electricians to work in electrification. Ensuring support for apprentices is vital to building our skills base, and an opportunity to encourage placements for mature age Canberrans seeking to reskill into emerging industries.

On Friday 26 August, my ACT federal government colleagues and I held the ACT Jobs and Skills Forum at Parliament House. The Forum was in the lead-up to the National Jobs and Skills Summit to ensure that as many stakeholders’ views were heard as possible to help inform the National Summit.

Last week, the last remaining member of the big four whose tireless efforts ended the Cold War in 1989 died. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, the last President of the Soviet Union, passed away at age 91, joining his Western colleagues who also were responsible for the end of the Cold War – Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II, all of whom predeceased him. The world sure needs leaders of that calibre now. Closer to home (at Yarralumla no less), it was good to see the NCA call in the lease on what was to have been a new Russian embassy next to their Chinese comrades and just down from the South African, PNG, and Canadian High Commissions. The Russians were very tardy in developing the site and I was pleased to see the Ukrainian ambassador throw his country’s hat into the ring to seek to obtain and develop it. It would be a great gesture and poetic justice if that heroic embattled country currently fighting for its life against Putin’s monstrous invasion were granted the site. While Australia is helping Ukraine a lot with arms and supplies, we could also send a clear message to Moscow by not only granting the embassy site to Ukraine to develop, but also by expelling all but say a couple of Russian third secretaries from the embassy thus making a definitive statement showing our displeasure and contempt for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I understand that the Australian Ukrainian community will organise fundraisers to help build a Ukrainian embassy on that site, if given the go-ahead, and I would urge all successful movers and shakers throughout Australia to donate money and show their support to get such an initiative off theOnground.avery local topic, heading over the lake, drivers heading into Civic along Canberra Avenue cannot help but notice the infestation of rabbits on Capital Hill. They are also multiplying around ReidCanberraCIT. may be the bush capital, but this is ridiculous! Some people complain of excessive kangaroos but roos are native to Australia and our national symbol (and there are currently big questions over the latest cull as it appears to have gone too far). But what about these rabbits, an invasive species brought to Australia by early British settlers to have some sport with. Together with the cane toad and serrated tussock, rabbits have not been useful additions to our flora and fauna. What’s the plan, Chief Minister? At this rate they will be spreading out and ripping up Haig Park, and the ANU and Reid ovals in no time at all. God forbid what will happen if they cross the lake!

Two threatened species, the golden sun moth and the striped legless lizard, were found at the site, while six more threatened species are likely to occur.

The development would entail clearing up to 42.25 hectares of vegetation, of which 17.11 hectares are natural temperate grassland and box-gum grassy woodland, considered critically endangered ecological communities under Commonwealth laws.

apprentice

A proposed Defence Housing Australia (DHA) development in Belconnen could destroy nearly 16 hectares of critically endangered ecological communities, according to environmental groups.

The environmental groups, however, are convinced that environmental damage will occur should the development proceed.

“It’s disappointing to see DHA persist with this project knowing that these nationally significant environmental values exist at the site,” Mr Rehwinkel said. “While the proponents claim that protecting the rest of the site is an adequate offset, the reality is we should not lose any more of this critically endangered ecosystem. There comes a point when you can’t offset environmental destruction anymore.”

Environmental groups oppose Lawson development

In its Biodiversity Impact Assessment, DHA stated that the development would avoid and minimise, where possible, impacts to the ecological communities and threatened species. They intend to retain most of the larger area of natural temperate grassland, including high quality habitat and the core areas of golden sun moth activity; and most of the available habitat for the striped legless lizard and two other species. They would also retain most of the box gum woodland, and minimise impacts to planted native trees, including hollow-bearing trees.

- Nick Fuller

“Destroying their habitat at Lawson will only make their survival more precarious,” Mr Rehwinkel said. “The housing development would cut the threatened ecosystem in two, and greatly increase the danger to the surviving remnants from weed invasion and recreational use, and fragment populations of the vulnerable striped legless lizard,” the environmental groups stated.

Detailed mitigation measures would be implemented under each phase to reduce impacts to biodiversity values.

Experts and environmental organisations have opposed the development, and more locals have signed a petition and rallied at the site opposing the development.

Less than one per cent of natural temperate grasslands, once widespread across southeast Australia, are formally protected, Rainer Rehwinkel, an ecologist with the Friends of Grasslands, said. The ACT is a national stronghold for natural temperate grassland – an “incredibly diverse” ecology, home to more than 500 native plant species and an even greater number of animal species, most of which are insects.

The immersive art experience highlights the way people seek shelter in abandoned spaces, while the repurposed office space challenges the idea that there isn’t space available to provide for those lacking a secure home. Hotel Mottainai is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Ronan and Clare Moss, whose talents shine through in the project. Ronan is a director at Cox Architecture and an artist, while Clare is a consultant for the Smith Family and has a background in performing arts and education.

Art hotel in vacant office shines light on homelessness

NEWS

The public exhibition space showcases the work of local artists, which spills onto the walls of the hotel where local street artists have created bright and striking murals. The pieces hanging in the exhibition and on the hotel walls are for sale. The plan is to rotate the exhibition space each month to continue to showcase local artists. The opening works have been created by people the pair know, including Ronan himself; they will put a call out for more in future. “We were really keen to support local artists, especially coming out of the pandemic where art across the globe has really struggled,” Clare says. The exhibition space will not be open to the public when a guest is staying in the hotel or when there is a public event on. The hotel room will be used as an overflow for the art on display and guests will be able to view the works in the gallery during their stay.

The couple began toying with the idea of creating something after having conversations with friends and colleagues about the juxtaposition between the worsening homelessness crisis and the amount of vacant space across the ACT. ‘Mottainai ’ is a Japanese word that can be translated as ‘don’t waste anything worthy’ and is often used to portray a sense of regret or guilt when something is thrown away or disregarded but its full value can be derived.

A new gallery installation and hotel which challenges the excess of unused space in a time of rising homelessness has opened its doors in Canberra. On Friday 2 September, Hotel Mottainai officially launched in a vacant office space in the London Court Building in City West.

I tend to reference Down Syndrome when explaining Ben and Gabe’s condition, because people understand it. They understand it because they see it, whereas Fragile X isn’t obvious, they look like normal little boys. That’s the hardest part,” she said.

“I’ve had so many people tell me that my children are naughty, and I should do a better job reprimanding them. “Well actually, they’ve got a cognitive problem.”Fragile X syndrome is an under-recognised and frequently misdiagnosed genetic disorder caused by fragility in the X chromosome. It is the leading cause of inherited developmental disability, affecting approximately one in 5,000 people. While Fragile X affects both men and women, females usually have milder symptoms. While Sharon’s daughter, Emily, is neurotypical, both Ben and Gabe have been diagnosed as full mutations. “With Benjamin, we thought he had autism,” said Sharon. “Then when Gabe was nearly two, I saw the same things and just thought, this is something more.” The lifelong condition causes developmental disability and learning difficulties, speech delays, ADHD, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities.Around50 per cent of males with Fragile X are also diagnosed with autism. “Gabe had a blood test done when he was two. Then we discovered that I was the carrier for Fragile X. “As a carrier, my kids have a 25 per cent chance of inheriting the gene.” Out of the seven members of Sharon’s family who have undergone testing, all have come back as carriers for Fragile X. Physical characteristics of Fragile X might include large ears, long faces, prominent jaw and foreheads, flat feet, and, as seen in Sharon’s family tree, unusually long limbs.

The family has been getting to know the traditional owners of Millpost and have given back a designated axe quarry to the local Indigenous people. “It’s on the land title, it is designated as an Aboriginal place, which means it’s protected in perpetuity, it can’t be developed, has to be looked after and they have access to it. Slowly taking the world by storm, pickleball reaches Canberra

A fun game with a strange name is slowly creeping across the globe and has recently found a devoted group of players here in Canberra. Pickleball is a sort of mash-up of tennis and badminton with a splash of ping-pong.Thisyear,pickleball has been adopted as the official state sport of Washington, USA where it was first played back in 1965. Pickleball was born when two families with nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon improvised after only being able to find parts of other games. It started with a badminton court, ping-pong paddles, and a perforated plastic ball. One of the original families was that of former US congressman Joel Pritchard, who created the rules with two other men. Two years later, the first official court was built in Pritchard’s neighbour’s yard. In 1972, a corporation was created to protect the Congressmansport.Pritchard’s wife, Joan, was the one who coined the name pickleball. The mismatched equipment made her think of a pickle boat in competitive rowing, where a team is made of those who were not selected to be principal rowers. While a widely held belief is the name came from the family dog, Pickle, that kept stealing the ball, this was later found to be a joke told to a media outlet. They didn’t have a dog named Pickle. On a badminton-sized court with small, solid paddles (aka the bat), players hit a hollow, plastic ball the size of a tennis ball. The game can be played both indoors or out and can be slow or quick. The only way to score a point is as the serve;

Pickleball ACT hopes to see the sport continue to grow. Photo: Kerrie Brewer. players cannot gain points from beating the other side or losing a serve. This may contribute to the game’s friendly feel.

Susan Briggs, now vice president of the Canberra club, contacted Judy. Susan loves sports, and when a friend started posting his new sporting craze, she was intrigued. Once she heard about the kitchen line, she knew pickleball was right for her.

SusanThesmiles.women and other social players started meeting on Sunday afternoons to play. Then, about 18 months ago, Pickleball Australia sent a representative to help establish Pickleball ACT Incorporated, which saw the group form a committee and receive funding to hire a space. Susan and Judy say the hardest part of playing pickleball in Canberra is finding a venue, especially one that is indoors. Weather can be unpredictable in the ACT and the club wanted a place they could play rain, hail or shine.Theyfound an indoor venue in the Action Indoor Sports Kambah; the owner also has a sister company in Queensland which had started hosting pickleball a month before. The club’s outdoor venue is the Tuggeranong Archery Club, while Belconnen Community Services hosts an over-65s event each week. Want to try your hand at pickleball? “You’re not allowed over that space; you’re not allowed in the kitchen. That’s me! I do not like spending time in the kitchen, so I thought this is the sport for me,”

Judy first discovered the sport when she was holidaying at a friend’s house near Foster, Victoria. A self-confessed nonsportsperson, Judy gave it a go and enjoyed the game so much that when she returned home, she was determined to find like-minded people in Canberra. She took to Facebook asking the Pickleball Australia page where she could play the game locally.

“The idea is to serve from the back line and then come into the line near the net called the kitchen line, that’s where you do dinking. Dinking is where you do short little shots to each other trying to get somebody out or make a mistake. It is very quick and exciting and frustrating – but most of all fun,” says Judy Stretton, Pickleball ACT club secretary.

The Brave’s Toby Kubara, who plays alongside his three brothers, summed it up perfectly: “It means everything to win it. With this group, these people, my brothers, with my whole family.

Canberra put on a show against the wooden spooners, running in seven tries to none in a blistering first half to lead 42-0 before easing up in the secondHeadinghalf. into their third finals appearance in four years, the Raiders will be able to take heart from their recent performances, racking up seven wins from their last eight matches. “We’re in good form and the players are full of belief and confidence,” coach Ricky Stuart said.

League MVP Casey Kubara extended the Brave’s lead to 3-1 early in the last period with a short-range finish. With just seconds remaining, the Northstars took advantage of a power play and drew one back, but it was too little, too late as the Brave held on to claim a terrific win.

The Brave got the better of a tense opening period to take a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Joey Hughes and Wehebe Darge. Newcastle responded in the second period to halve the deficit and set up a thrilling finish.

Eighth-placed Canberra will now play an elimination final in Melbourne against the fifth-placed Melbourne Storm on Saturday 10 September at 5.40pm.

The Raiders will head to Melbourne full of confidence having won their last four clashes against the Storm at AAMI Park, including a 20-6 victory earlier this season and a 12-10 qualifying final win in 2019.

Many CSO supporters will remember Chong from his utterly captivating performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in 2016, Ms Cottis said.“We’re delighted he joins us again! Kristian plays with such impeccable clarity, brilliance, energy, and joy. I’m sure his performance of Malcolm Williamson’s effervescent piano concerto will be one of the highlights of our season.”

Internationally acclaimed Australian pianist Kristian Chong will perform Williamson’s Second Piano Concerto, composed in eight days in 1960. The piece, Williamson wrote, was “an overtly Australian work aiming at spontaneity and vigour rather than profundity”.“It’sapeaceful, friendly, highly tuneful work, full of spontaneity and vigour,” Cottis said. “Very infrequently performed (I’m not sure why, it’s a great work!), I think our audiences will love this.”

Strauss’s Metamorphosen (1946), a piece for 23 solo strings, is, Strauss expert Michael Kennedy wrote, “an elegy, profoundly moving and inspired, for the destruction of the German culture which had inspired Strauss”.

CSO presents Strauss and Beethoven in War and Peace

“This concerto has a unique harmonic palette,” Chong said. “The opening movement is lively and quite explosive, whilst the second movement has a beautiful sense of warmth and sincerity in the textures and melodic lines.”

War and Peace, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s concert this month, encompasses two centuries of German heroism and defeat: Metamorphosen, Richard Strauss’s moving lamentation for German culture, and Beethoven’s mighty Third Symphony, the Eroica, the revolutionary symphony that began the Romantic age. A too-seldom performed Australian piece, Malcolm Williamson’s Second Piano Concerto, bridges the two works. “The whole evening will take our audiences through two of the greatest and most profound works in classical music, with a palate cleanser of Williamson,” CSO chief conductor and artistic director Jessica Cottis said.

The concert ends with Beethoven’s monumental Third Symphony (1805), which musicologists Joseph Kerman and Alan Tyson consider “an authentic ‘watershed work’: one that marks a turning point in the history of modern music”. Twice as long as the Classical symphonies of Mozart or Haydn, it builds on the works of Méhul and, above all, the mighty Cherubini, whom Beethoven considered the greatest living composer of his time. Beethoven conceived the work as a tribute to the revolutionary hero, Napoleon Bonaparte, then First Consul of France, whom he compared to the greatest consuls of Ancient Rome. But when Napoleon declared himself Emperor in 1804, Beethoven tore in half the title-page bearing a dedication to Napoleon. “So, he is no more than a common mortal!” Beethoven angrily exclaimed. “Now, too, he will tread under foot all the rights of Man, indulge only his ambition; now he will think himself superior to all men, become a tyrant!” The finished symphony Beethoven instead dedicated to ‘the memory of a great man’.

At the end of World War II, Strauss wrote in his diary: “The most terrible period of human history is at an end, the 12-year reign of bestiality, ignorance, and anti-culture under the greatest criminals, during which Germany’s 2,000 years of cultural evolution met its doom.”Once Germany’s most celebrated 20th century composer, the Nazi regime and war had been an ordeal for Strauss. Forced to collaborate with the Nazis, “these barbarians”, to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and grandchildren, he was unable to save her other relations; Die schweigsame Frau, his opera with Jewish writer Stefan Zweig, and perhaps the warmest-hearted comic opera since the 19th century, had been banned; and he was forced to resign from presidency of the Reichsmuskikkammer when the Nazis intercepted a letter he wrote to Zweig criticising their racial ideology. Towards the end of the war, many of Germany’s most venerable opera houses lay in rubble, including Dresden (where nine of Strauss’s operas premiered, among them Salome, Elektra, and Der Rosenkavalier) and Vienna (where Die Frau ohne Schatten was born). When the Munich opera house was bombed in 1944, Strauss wrote a few bars entitled ‘Mourning for Munich’. These became the germ of MetamorphosenMetamorphosen showcases the CSO’s string section, led by concertmaster Kirsten Williams. “A deeply felt, elegiac piece … it revolves as a single, half-hour span of continually shifting textures,” Cottis said. “It’s such beautiful music. Perhaps I could describe it as ‘painfully beautiful’. The final bars use a theme from an earlier funeral march, from the third movement of Beethoven’s Eroica, yet the work ends with a sense of hope, for rebirth or renewal.”

“Great depths of idealism and disillusionment are held in the harmonic climax, as the music climbs to an astonishingly high point of tension,” the CSO state. “Beethoven had hoped that Napoleon would inspire a humanist, egalitarian Europe; with a powerful and startlingly original dissonance based on F major, the composer issues his own call to revolution, condemning greed, oppression and the lust for power.“Although the symphony has no coherent story, it really captures a heroic spirit, and everything builds towards the emphatic and triumphant finale,” Cottis said. “It’s a thrilling work.”

Ukrainian classical pianist Alexey Botvinov performs at the Stand With Ukraine concert to raise funds for friends and family back home, at The Q, Wednesday 21 September. Image supplied. World renowned classic pianist Alexey Botvinov is coming to Australia to perform a few select shows to raise money for his family and friends back in Ukraine. In one of only a couple of public concerts, Botvinov will perform at the Stand With Ukraine fundraiser at The Q - Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 21 September. Now living in exile in Germany, Botvinov left his home city, Odesa, early in the conflict to be able to send back financial aid. He has so far been overwhelmed by the support he has received from the people of Europe. “In the first days of the war, immediately after the war began, I knew I needed to leave in order to play an active role in the war with my concert work and to have the opportunity to raise money and awareness for Ukraine. I would have been powerless to do this from my home and therefore took the very heartbreaking decision of leaving,” Botvinov says. He finds it too painful to speak of how the war has ravaged his country and his people but he holds on to hope for peace. “All I can say is that before the war I had a normal life, spent time with family, travelled for concerts. Now I live in a foreign country, can’t go back home and all my energy is invested in the warBotvinoveffort.” has chosen a selection of his favourite works to perform for the intimate audience at The Q, including romantic pieces from Brahms and Chopin, as well as the music of his friend, Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov. “The program will end with Rachmaninov’s second sonata which is full of raw emotion and helps me express how I feel in these painful times,” he says. After the performance, the audience will have the chance to ask Botvinov questions about his life and career. He has wanted to visit Australia since he was a young boy and, until now, a busy performing career has stopped him. “I’m very much looking forward to this trip; to performing for Australian audiences and meeting them in person as well as some kangaroos,” he says.

“It was a simple act, but that gave me permission that it’s okay to be an artist.”

2 How did an Aussie actor end up playing US southerner, Frank Shankwitz?

Take 5 with ‘Wish AndrewMan’Steele

“I auditioned for NIDA three times over five years and got in on the third time.

“Before making the film, Frank was interviewed onstage where he was asked, ‘You’ve granted almost half a million wishes around the world. What’s“Andyours?’Frank said, ‘I guess to have my story told, so my grandkids could know I did something with my life, something cool.’ That’s how it “It’sbegan.definitely emotional that Frank’s no longer with us, but his legacy does live on.”

“There were definitely a couple of people who were like, ‘We’re getting an Aussie to tell this story?!’“When I first met Frank, I told him about how I run a socially conscious film festival, called Flicks for Change, where we show films with important social messages, then invite all the non-profits that work in the fields that the film touches on. “He stops me and goes, ‘You know, what? Somebody like you should be playing me in this movie!’”

4 Which was the most challenging scene to film?

“The first scene that we shot in the whole film was the one where I barge into Sergeant Mason’s office and pin him up against the wall. “I do the scene and it felt good, then I look down and my hand is bleeding. Because I had grabbed his police uniform and he had all these medals on.

“First take, and I’m already Mr Cottonwool. Second take, I grabbed him again – and now the other hand is bleeding. I was like, this is going to be a long shoot.”

1 How did you prepare for the role? “There was a lot of pressure to tell the story right… but Frank was there every step of the way. He was a consultant all the way through.“Even when the doctors said, ‘you need to stay in hospital,’ he was like, ‘Nah, I got a shoot to get to.’ “If my uniform had a button undone, he was always there to tell me ‘You’d get in trouble if you had that in our day!’

“In high school, we had a teacher who taught at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) come in. She took us for a few days and at the end of it she pulled me aside and said, ‘You would be someone we would consider accepting at NIDA.’ “That changed everything. I didn’t think acting was something that I could do professionally. She planted that seed.

3 How does it feel to have the film out there after Frank’s passing?

Like the Child’s Play franchise, the tone is whacky with Leena sharing the same struggles as those faced by Chucky; both are presented as stone-cold killers who are conversely restricted by their size and appearance. Whereas Leena yearned for freedom outside the asylum that imprisoned her, she also longs for belonging to a traditional family structure. The wealthy Albright family provides the picture-perfect nuclear family that Leena craves, headed by the warm and sensitive family patriarch Allen (Rossif Sutherland), an artist who specialises in portraits that reveal different faces under a dark light. Tables are turned and statuses shift, perversely moving us to, at times, empathise with, and champion for, our malevolent Verdict:antagonist.Asurprisingly twisted and wickedly campy good time that delivers parody, shock, scares, and some dark, satirical laughs. 4 stars. - Luke themovieclub.netMcWilliams Movie viewed at Dendy cinemas.

Orphan: First Kill (MA15+) Back in 2007, inside an Estonian asylum, 31-year-old patient Leena Klammer (Isabelle Fuhrman) suffers from a rare hormonal disorder that gives her the appearance of a nine-year-old. After escaping, Leena poses as a missing American child called Esther, and soon flies to Connecticut to be picked up by Tricia (Julia Stiles) and taken back to the family.

The original Orphan (2009) had a twisted reveal, influenced by a disturbing true story. Thirteen years later, lead Isabelle Fuhrman kick-started this production based on the strength of a new twisted true story. Whereas this prequel could have easily taken the bare-essential steps routinely leading to the events of the original, Orphan: First Kill instead leans heavily into the camp and schlock that made the first entry a surprising hit.

A narrator is Zane’s solution to the first-person voice of Dickens’s novel that reveals Pip’s inner world, his shame, his feelings for Estella, and the anxiety he feels about becoming another person for her. Although a low-budget production, there are also moments of spectacle, such as a grand ball scene.Hekimian’s favourite scenes are “the conversations, the moments of realness, where a character is being open and honest about their feelings, or their prospects, or their life”: the blacksmith Jo telling Young Pip about his life and inability to be educated; the powerful presence of Miss Havisham; Pip and his friend Herbert Pocket, “silly boys dressed as men”; the romantic scenes between Pip and Estella.

The unfortunate hero Pip appears in three aspects: the innocent, mistreated child whose act of kindness to Magwitch and encounter with Miss Havisham bear strange fruit; the self-conscious young man, who wants desperately to be a gentleman, who longs for the beautiful but chilly Estella, as out of his reach as a star, and who betrays the people who love him for a shallow existence; and a ghostly narrator looking back on the events of his strange life. The youth cast has a lightness and a bubbly energy that elevates their performance, he says, while the adult cast bring a grounded reality.

Tip 1: Declutter your clothes

If you are no longer in love with something that is still in wearable condition, look at selling it online, or donating it to your local op shop, or via SCRgroup’s collection bins.

To declutter your closet, pack away clothes you won’t be wearing for a while. As we come into spring, most heavy coats and jumpers can be packed away (bar your favourite, for fickle Canberra weather).

Consider using a fan to help the process along, or a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air.

Tip 3: Defence against dampness To prevent dampness, regularly air out your wardrobes by leaving the doors open whilst the doors or windows in your room are also open.Lining the shelves of your wardrobe with newspapers will act as the first line of defence against any dampness. Pop a few silica gel packets or charcoal sachets throughout your wardrobe as an added measure.

The first course of action is to empty out your wardrobe to make sure the mould hasn’t spread.

- Anja de Rozario

Look at vacuum-sealing them to prevent moisture from getting in.

Uh oh, you found mould

You may be able to save any affected clothing but first, check the care label to see what might damage the fabric, since the best chance of killing sartorial mould is to crank up your washing machine to the hottest temperature possible, and give the clothes a 10-to-30-minute wash.

Mould Cleaning Australia also suggests removing the stains before the clothes dry with an old toothbrush and a mould stain remover, such as bleach, vinegar, baking soda, borax, or detergent. Remember, op shops and collection bins cannot accept clothes with mould on them, and it is important they are not donated, as the mould can spread to other donations.

Most mould species cannot survive high temperatures.

If your wardrobe is overflowing with clothing, you are already at a disadvantage when it comes to avoiding mould.

The World Health Organization has found that homes in NSW are damper than is considered safe, and here in the ACT we prepare for another wet spring thanks to La AsNina.mould may very well be enemy #1 in the coming months, Australian waste management service, SCRgroup, provided their best tips for minimising mould in your wardrobe - and what to do if you find sartorial mould!

Tip 2: Make sure your clothes are completely dry before storing them This sounds simple, but it can be a pain to dry your clothes when it’s constantly raining. Also, have you ever noticed how tricky it is to tell between damp and cold fabrics?Ifhanging clothes outside to dry isn’t an option, make sure your clothes are spaced out on a drying rack to allow plenty of air to circulate between them.

A jam-packed wardrobe prevents air flow, and mould loves damp, dark spaces.

Acupuncture works on the nerves. True or false?

True: Modern acupuncture has its origin in ancient folk medicine. Acupuncture emerged in China around 3000 years ago and its origins are steeped in the ancient folk medicine of that era. Over the subsequent thousands of years, the essential principles of acupuncture have been distilled and systematised so that the knowledge that was once fiercely guarded and only passed from one family member to another is now taught at universities.

False: Acupuncture works on chi, not on the nerves. An acupuncturist’s goal is to restore balance to your vital force (‘chi’ in Chinese). Think of your body as a landscape covered by an interconnected river system. In acupuncture, these rivers are called ‘meridians’ and instead of carrying water, they carry your vitality. Acupuncture points act like gates controlling the flow of this precious vitality. If one part of the landscape is flooded, whilst another parched, then simply redirecting water/vitality away from the flooded to the parched area would be the simplest way to restore balance.

Acupuncture is just for pain False: For more information, google ‘acupuncture evidence project’. Yes, acupuncture is great for treating pain; it’s still one of the main reasons patients seek acupuncture out. However, the next most popular reason people come for acupuncture is to tackle stress. If you consider all the possible benefits to your wellbeing arising from reduced stress levels, you can imagine the breadth of conditions acupuncture can help with. Many people try acupuncture for a specific reason initially and then become regular clients, who will have regular ‘tune ups’ because they appreciate the overall feeling of wellbeing they experience after a treatment.

Editor’s note: This wellbeing column provides information that is general in nature. Please always refer to your preferred health professional for advice suited to your personal healthcare requirements.

Acupuncture is painful False Needles: Ouch, right? Not when it comes to acupuncture! At 1/5 of a millimetre, the needles used are incredibly fine. When placed skillfully by a trained acupuncturist, most needles will be inserted with minimal discomfort or even without you noticing. Many people say to me “Was that it?” or “Did you put it in already?” Note: Acupuncture is different to ‘dry needling,’ used by physios, which is often quite painful.

Property prices in Canberra have continued to slide throughout August, with ACT dwellings recording an average 0.39 per cent drop according to the latest PropTrack data. Senior economist at PropTrack, Paul Ryan, says prices are persistently falling in the ACT. From the peak in March, prices are now down 2.8 per cent, Mr Ryan says. However, despite the recent decline, ACT dwellings have still recorded an annual price growth of 7.07 per cent. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, dwelling prices in the ACT rose by 40.2 per cent, reaching a median value of $908,000.

ART Teaching it, viewing it, painting it. An avid lover of all art and frequent visitor to every exhibition I can find. Constantly nagging my young proteges to properly clean their brushes. Trying to find the time to start another painting. (Pictured: Jug with passionfruit [original oil].)

BOOKS,BOOKS, BOOKS Reading them, writing them, talking about them at book club. I could re-read Pride and Prejudice every year and never tire of the language. Admirer of the beauty of language as manipulated by Jane Austen, George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy.
