ince 1999, POSH has contributed over $9 million towards our shared mission of defeating cancer. Your generous donations have driven major advances in cancer research. They have had an impact and we are making a difference every single day. As breakthroughs in research are achieved, we’ve been able to leverage this by expanding our role as advocates for the broader community, developing unique, game-changing resources and support services for those affected by cancer. It is such an honour to lead an organisation that provides so many multi-faceted layers of value to our community. On behalf of Cancer Council NSW, I would like to express my deep appreciation and admiration for everyone that works to make POSH such a special event, especially our dedicated POSH Committee members who work tirelessly throughout the year. Their outstanding contribution and philanthropy cannot be overstated. Thank you! Our corporate partners, sponsors and individuals have been so generous to us this year by donating such a wide variety of wonderful auction items and hosting tables. Thank you! We have a relentless commitment to cancer research. As a comprehensive cancer charity, we are currently supporting more than 130 research programs. In fact, we have invested over $100 million in research over the past ten years. We are privileged that one of our most prestigious researchers, Professor Robyn Ward, is our keynote speaker for this evening. Over the course of two decades she has received international recognition and a number of high-profile awards for the great strides she has made in the fight against bowel cancer.
T
onight, we continue on our journey to help, firstly, control and then to work towards our ultimate goal, the defeat of cancer. On behalf of Cancer Council NSW and the POSH Committee, I wish to give a special thank you to everyone here as we embark on yet another POSH extravaganza. Whether you are long time supporters or “first timers” – it is all of you who make possible the work of Cancer Council in NSW and Australia. All of us have, in some way or other, been touched by cancer. For that reason, we can share wholeheartedly in Cancer Council’s mission to control and eventually defeat cancer. The continuing success of POSH shows how deeply and generously the POSH family – guests, supporters, corporate partners and sponsors is committed to joining Cancer Council on its journey to these goals. By supporting us here tonight each of you are playing an active role in the cancer cause. The journey is highly dependent on funding of research, the provision of support services and education on prevention. Cancer Council is the biggest non-government financial supporter of cancer research in NSW and Australia. So thank you for your generous support to contributing to our work. I would also like to acknowledge Vince Sorrenti for his excellent mastery as Master of Ceremony, his entertainment and his generous commitment to POSH over the past 14 years.
As individuals here with us this evening, you should know that your support will ensure that we can continue on our journey to defeat cancer. Tonight we are all united around this common cause and with your support we can continue to achieve many more breakthroughs. Thank you!
POSH is also about much more! It’s about an excellent evening of conviviality, wonderful auction items and unique experiences all of which are 100% donated. As Chairman of the POSH Committee, I speak with first-hand experience of the hard work and “behind the scenes” organisation that goes into this event – and I guarantee that you will enjoy the night.

s an entertainer I am forever answering requests from charity organisations. Performers feel it is their duty to respond with goodwill and support whenever they can. “Giving something back” is a long standing tradition in showbiz. For outsiders it can be difficult to understand that the stage is our work time, not our free time. Our choice of charity has to be discerning. I have yet to encounter a bad cause, but some causes are more worthy than others. When donating time to charity we like to be assured that those involved are committed. We want to believe that the cause is deserving, and that our time, energy and resources are focused. We have to believe we are making a difference. If the experience of giving is an enjoyable one as well - all the better! Cancer Council’s POSH Auction ticks all of these boxes.

Above all, POSH treats its audience and supporters with respect. In a small way it is exemplary of the dignity we need to extend to cancer sufferers. It has been my pleasure to meet and work with the devoted people on the POSH Committee now for 14 consecutive years. I have had the privilege of meeting gifted and inspiring cancer researchers. I have met wonderful and generous POSH supporters. I have derived enormous satisfaction from my association with the event as a whole. In over 25 years in showbiz I have attended hundreds of benefits and fundraising events. Take it from me, POSH is the best of its kind. It is the standard by which we should measure all such events. I am proud to be the host of the 2013 POSH Gala Ball and I hope to see your smiling and hopefully laughing faces in the audience on 16 March!

rofessor Robyn Ward is a leading cancer researcher and oncologist, specialising in bowel cancer. Her work has changed the lives of thousands of patients, and has the potential to make bowel cancer (the second most common cancer in Australia) significantly easier to detect and treat.
Professor Ward continues to be a leading researcher in this field, with her current work focusing on exactly what causes cancer and how it can be detected early. From research into how what we eat influences our risk of bowel cancer, to investigating new and dangerous early-stage tumours, her work has the potential to improve many lives.
Professor Ward has pushed the boundaries of research and made some remarkable discoveries during her illustrious career. Her team recently made a breakthrough in why some bowel cancers are hereditary, finding an entirely new way that parents pass this risk of cancer on to their children. She was instrumental in developing a screening test for bowel cancer predisposition, improved our understanding of how colorectal cancer develops from lesions in the gut, and helped test human antibodies that might be able to be used as a cancer treatment. These discoveries won her the Premier’s Award for Outstanding Cancer Researcher in 2007, among other accolades.
Professor Robyn Ward Head of Adult Cancer Program, Lowy Cancer Research Centre Professor Robyn Ward is the Clinical Associate Dean of the Prince of Wales Clinical School, University of NSW, and the Head of Adult Cancer Program, Lowy Cancer Research Centre. She has achieved a significant record of scholarship, research and academic leadership, and has authored over 170 papers published in international peer reviewed research journals. Cancer Council NSW has awarded Professor Ward and her team over $2.2 million in grants over the last six years, as part of our support for her work going back over a decade.

Increasingly, people will work in organisations and live in families and social settings which advance the control of cancer and where resources (people, ideas, services and funds) are developed globally and locally to meet the challenges of cancer.
All of us at Cancer Council NSW – our staff, volunteers, supporters and stakeholders – are committed to diminishing the toll wrought by every cancer diagnosis and death. We do this through world-ranking research, prevention, advocacy and support programs, so that we can make a difference in the fight against all cancers.
Our research capabilities and reach are also enriched by our international network, with hundreds of collaborations with academics, organisations, networks and communities. 13. David Williamson Theatre Experience Join David Williamson AO and his wife, Kristin, at a performance of the World Premiere production of Happiness at Sydney’s historic Ensemble Theatre. Before the performance indulge in a sumptuous three-course dinner, prepared by Head Chef Dan Brukarz at Bayly’s Restaurant at the Ensemble whilst enjoying the idyllic view of Sydney Harbour and private conversation with Australia’s greatest living playwright and social commentator. Roland Makepeace knows what makes people happy. Why wouldn’t he? He’s an eminent professor of psychology who has devoted his life to scientifically investigating human well-being. But his theories are sorely tested when his wife meets an old suitor and his daughter threatens to go right off the rails. This sharply observed comedy suggests that theory can sometimes fall well short of reality and that finding happiness is easier said than done. “It’s very funny – you’ll laugh and laugh – but you’ll also empathise with the characters. What I love is the irony of this professor of happiness surrounded by unhappiness when he’s done everything right. Only David can bring us this kind of irony, and we are privileged to be able to bring David’s World Premieres to you at Ensemble”. Director Sandra Bates. David Williamson AO, Ensemble Theatre and Bayly’s Restaurant are proud to once again support Cancer Council NSW’s POSH Auction.
