POSH Saturday 22 March 2014 The Westin Sydney
Cancer Council NSW has funded $140 million of research over the past 15 years elcome to POSH 2014 – a special occasion as we mark our 15th anniversary and more than $10 million raised since 1999. Our POSH family comes together every year with one single purpose uniting us: to help beat cancer. Our research shows that we are on our way to doing this, with nearly 30% more Australians alive who would have otherwise died from cancer over 20 years ago. This is due to continuing investment into research which has resulted in improvements in prevention, screening and treatments – but there is still more to be done. Research is key to understanding cancer, the issues facing cancer patients and their loved ones, as each year we continue to learn more. We are excited about the discoveries we make, and what they mean now and for the future. We use research insights to develop prevention, advocacy, information and support programs and services to ensure that the community is supported throughout each stage of the cancer journey. Some of our currently funded research has already begun sequencing the pancreatic and melanoma cancer genomes, which will lead to greater understanding of the disease, and better detection and more personalised treatments for those diagnosed with these cancers. Everything we do is only possible because of people like you. Thank you to the POSH committee, our corporate partners and our sponsors who donate auctions items and experiences to POSH each year. I would also like to recognise each and every one of our POSH guests for your generosity in helping us to raise much-needed funds for cancer research. Thank you for supporting Cancer Council NSW.

welcome and thank you for your continued support o all of our POSH family, those here in the room this evening and those otherwise engaged, welcome and thank you for your continued support and involvement. It is an honour to welcome you to the 15th anniversary celebration of POSH. It is such a privilege to be a part of POSH’s success. We have all contributed to raising over $10 million to support the work of Cancer Council NSW in our ultimate goal of beating cancer. Our successes along that road to our ultimate goal are only achieved through your support and your generosity. Thank you for joining us this evening and for contributing in so many different ways. Cancer Council NSW’s priorities are rightly broad and complex - from investing in research, to advocacy, prevention programs and patient and family support. Cancer Council remains the largest NSW non-government financier of cancer research with nearly $15 million invested in 2013 and some 140 research studies. In 2013, we facilitated the provision of pro bono legal and financial assistance to over 1,500 cancer patients and carers. Our advocacy campaigns have led to some ground breaking changes in policies and legislation. We have achieved a huge amount with your support and will continue to do so. Over the years, POSH has evolved and innovated so that we can bring you a wonderful evening of fellowship, conviviality and the experience of supporting a great cause. And this year will be no different. I encourage you, as you have always done, to enjoy the evening, support the cause and share the POSH experience with your friends, families and networks. The one thing that has stayed the same since the very first POSH in 1999 is Vince Sorrenti, as our Master of Ceremonies. We are truly grateful for his support and commitment. He has entertained us throughout the years and we welcome him back again in 2014. POSH would not be same without him. The fight against cancer can only be won by communities mobilising, sharing their knowledge and supporting each other. We thank you for your support and for being here tonight. We hope that you thoroughly enjoy POSH 2014.

everyone committed to POSH is united by a common goal: to beat cancer. he success POSH enjoys today, as we celebrate our 15th year, is mainly attributed to the many people who give so generously of their time, energy and effort. A very big “thank you“ to Vince Sorrenti, POSH Master of Ceremonies and entertainer who has made an outstanding personal commitment by donating his services for the past fifteen years. He continues to delight and engage our patrons and we are very grateful for his support, humour and tenacity. Our thanks are also extended to the POSH committee members many of who have been on the POSH committee since its inception 15 years ago. They provide the strategy, the focus and the imagination to ensure POSH is a not-to-be-missed event each year. Finally, to the many volunteers whose efforts, whether large or small, are invaluable to our cause, we “thank you” for your contribution. Of note, is Jane Bennett who has been a key volunteer with POSH for the last fifteen years.
