elcome to POSH 2015. We come together each year at POSH with one single purpose uniting us: the resolute belief that together we will beat cancer. At Cancer Council NSW, we know that this is possible as we have the support of the community and the extended POSH family. Since POSH began in 1999, it has contributed more than $11 million towards the work of Cancer Council NSW. Cancer Council NSW is the largest non-government funder of cancer research in Australia, conducting and funding world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer. We know that research is fundamental to unlocking the answers that will help beat cancer. This knowledge informs the range of programs and services that Cancer Council offers across the cancer journey. Our prevention programs help people make healthier lifestyle choices; the information and support that we provide empowers and supports people; and our advocacy ensures that governments take action to reduce cancer risk and improve access to care and treatment. I would like to thank each of you for your generosity and support.

OSH offers some of our most loyal friends and supporters the opportunity to come together, and this year we have more reasons to celebrate, as 2015 marks the 60th birthday of Cancer Council NSW. When we first began our work in 1955, Cancer Council NSW focused on ensuring clinical excellence and advising the NSW Government on how best to meet the clinical needs of people affected by cancer. Over the years we have seen significant growth in our offering for the broader community, expanding to provide programs and services more broadly throughout the cancer journey. Our work over the past 60 years has seen great success in changing the cancer landscape: we have influenced a range of government policies on issues from tobacco to UV exposure; we have continuously provided the community with the most up-to-date information available on different aspects of cancer; we have developed innovative programs to support the practical and emotional needs of those affected by a cancer diagnosis; and our research has changed the way that cancer is understood, diagnosed, treated and managed. Thank you for joining us at POSH to celebrate our 60th anniversary, and thank you for demonstrating such generosity towards the cancer cause.

rofessor Ian Frazer AC, vaccine pioneer and National Living Treasure, is one of the most respected scientists in Australia today. His research, funded by Cancer Council, has changed the way we think about cancer prevention, and will help save thousands of lives. Professor Ian Frazer’s work to create the vaccines Gardasil and Ceravix has been a breakthrough in the treatment of cervical cancer and cancer in general. In collaboration with Dr Jian Zhou, he was the first to create a successful vaccine against HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer. The vaccine has the potential to virtually eradicate cervical cancer. Thanks to his work creating the HPV vaccine, he holds over 10 honorary medals and awards, including Australian of the Year (2006) and Companion to the Order of Australia. He is also the most recent past president of Cancer Council Australia.
