A rub. It’s all that separates a flawless round from “better luck next time.” But you’re not depending on luck. You’re depending on countless hours in and out of the saddle. And you didn’t come here for just a ribbon. You came for the championship ribbon. So ask yourself, does your horse have the stomach to win?
Time for a gut check. TheStomachToWin.com

Letter Equestrian Magazine Volume LXXVIII, No.2
With spring in the air and summer just around the corner, people across the United States are planning family vacations and activities for their children. With so many options for travel and leisure, choosing the best fit can be a daunting task. In this edition of Equestrian Magazine, the editorial team presents options for leisure and vacation time. Many equestrians look for innovative and exciting riding vacations both in the U.S. and abroad. Clonshire Polo and Equestrian Centre in Limerick, Ireland, offers riding holidays with separate programs to suit the needs of riders of all ages and levels. Recent visitors Justin, Libby, Kate, and Liza Sautter explain what sets Clonshire apart from any other equestrian vacation destination. Last year, the Kentucky Horse Park hosted nearly 800,000 visitors on its grounds and held more than 200 special events and horse shows. The KHP’s new executive director, Jamie Link, shares his vision for developing the facility into a top tourist destination. The Kentucky Horse Park hosted the World Championships for the first time in 1978, and legendary rider Bruce Davidson captured the Individual World Champion title. He and Eagle Lion, his mount at the Rolex Kentucky ThreeDay Events in 1992 and 1993, are immortalized at the Park’s Rolex Stadium. His son, Buck, an outstanding athlete, horseman, competitor, trainer, coach, and clinician, talks about his career and his dream of standing next to his father’s statue as the winner of Rolex Kentucky. Let Equestrian Magazine be your guide to travel and your favorite source of equestrian news!

Blue Willow Farm Summer Camp is a unique opportunity for children and young adults ages six to 16 to learn about horses and have fun. Throughout the week, campers of all skill levels will hone their skills in the English Saddle Seat discipline as they learn about various aspects of horse care and stable management including grooming, feeding, and tack maintenance. Additionally, lessons in equine anatomy as well as breed and color recognition are taught to make for a well-rounded week. Campers are taught about sportsmanship and showmanship, and enjoy equine-related arts, crafts, and games.
A premier, all-girls sleep away camp, the Bryn Mawr Horseback Riding Camp offers one 10-day session, or two- or three-week sessions that can be combined for a total of five weeks for girls ages 10 to 15. Entry-level to advanced riders receive quality instruction in hunt seat equitation and have the opportunity to enhance their skills in the hunter, jumper, and dressage rings, while still participating in traditional summer camp activities like swimming, adventure, and arts and crafts. Tucked away among the pastoral beauty of rustic Northeastern Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr Horseback Riding Camp is located just 100 miles from New York City, 135 miles from Philadelphia, and 250 miles from the Washington, D.C. metro area.
The International Riding Camp was established in 1978 for girls ages seven to 17, who love horses and riding. Located 90 miles northwest of New York City, the riding camp provides an environment in which horse lovers can experience various riding disciplines: hunt seat equitation, cross-country jumping, and polo. It offers a well-rounded equestrian camp program along with water skiing, tennis, swimming, and arts and crafts. The riding camp offers three hours of riding lessons per day, six days per week. For some campers, three hours per day is not enough riding so additional riding time is offered for up to six hours per day.
As part of its traditional summer camp, Rockbrook provides an extensive equestrian program combining qualified staff, experienced horses, and excellent facilities. Campers will enjoy an atmosphere where they can advance their riding skills, expand their horsemanship knowledge, and enjoy riding with friends. Designed to be fun and informative for riders with any level of experience, the Rockbrook riding program emphasizes safety, fun, and skill advancement. Rockbrook teaches English riding lessons in the American system of forward riding, along with dressage skills and jumping for advanced riders. A camper will spend two one-hour periods at the barn; one in a mounted lesson tailored to her riding ability, and the other working with the horses. The camp collaborates closely with the Equestrian Program at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, sharing both horses and instructors. The Rockbrook Camp, accredited by the American Camp Association, is located on 214 acres in the mountains of North Carolina, and hosts girls ages six through 16 in two-, three-, and four-week sessions.

Texas A&M Equestrian Camps strive to give campers a feel for what it is like to be a member of the school’s Equestrian Team. They offer two different levels of camp, the Elite Option for high school-aged riders who are interested in riding in college, and a more introductory-level camp for 12- to 18-year-olds. These camps still give campers a feel for the team, but also work on basics related to catch riding. Texas A&M offers three different disciplines to choose from: hunter seat camps, which cover both equitation on the flat and equitation over fences, western horsemanship, and reining. The Team’s coaches are the main instructors, while current team members also play a big role. The camps take place at the home of Aggie Equestrian, The Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex.
The Briarwood Summer Day Camp has been part of the Briarwood Farm business for over 30 years and has had an amazing impact on many children. The day camp runs Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, and includes two riding lessons each day. Quality instruction coupled with hands-on time with the horses enables riders to progress with their horsemanship skills incredibly quickly. The camp is “all horses, all day,” and a very interactive experience which inspires youngsters to take their love of horses and turn it into a passion.
The University of Findlay offers two, one-week sessions of summer eventing camp. A skill-based instructional camp for the serious equestrian, it provides two riding sessions per day: one dressage and one jumping (show jumping or cross-country). There is a cross-country course and trails on the property for conditioning and schooling sessions. Lectures are part of the daily schedule, and topics include how to ride a dressage test successfully, course walking, designing a show jumping course, and stable management. Students are responsible for the complete care of the horses they are assigned. There is an option to bring your own horse. Parents are encouraged to attend a jumping demonstration on the last day.
Maggie’s Take: “Saying that Rockbrook Camp is a place where you learn to grow is an understatement. I have had some of the best friendships possible and the bonds I have created over the years are unbeatable. The relationships you create at camp are real, due to the fact that my friends and I are not engulfed by technology and the distractions in the everyday world. It is the perfect escape from reality where friendships are simple and integral. The activities are also incredible. I rode horses for many years at camp, and not only do campers create connections with the people around them, but with the animals at the camp barn. Everyday campers walk down to the barn and ride their horse, and after the session at camp, they form an immense bond with the amazing animals as well! Rockbrook is an incredible place and the friendships I have created with the people and animals brought me back year after year!” Maggie Greer, 10-year camper at Rockbrook Summer Horseback Riding Camp for Girls

Kai’s Take:
“I thought the Texas A&M Equestrian college equestrian prep camp offered a great insight into what riding in college would be all about. Being a member of the team now, I can say that the coaches and counselors really did an accurate job of explaining the ins and outs of college riding, and giving great insight to what it would take to ride for the university. The camp also gave me the chance to ride in front of the coach, and having the opportunity to do so helped lead to my recruitment onto the team.” Kai DeVoglaer, freshman Equestrian Team member at Texas A&M University

“I feel that equestrian, as a sport, must pull together. We have to be one group. We all have our individual breeds, we all have our individual disciplines, but at the core of it we have the horse. In order to move this sport forward, for all of us, we’ve got to be

“He’s such a willing horse, and he never says no to me. I’ve never had a horse that I’ve felt so connected to. He’s so special in a lot of ways. He’s an awesome horse, and he’s going to have a forever home with me.” Kim Herslow reflected on longtime partner, Rosmarin, after sweeping Small Tour competition at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival Week 7 CDI1* presented by Mission Control.
“We’ve always said that winning our home (FEI) Nations Cup is priority. We’ve had a great two weeks and we used eight different riders for the two (FEI) Nations Cups, and I really think this shows the depth we have.”

“I think we all need to give back and I will continue to give back. I was a college professor for 43 years and I have a lot of students, in fact some of them were in the room tonight, and it is my honor to give back. It’s what I enjoy. I retired in 2010 from the University and my wife argues with me because I’m working harder now than I was before. But I enjoy the horses, I enjoy the horse people. Whatever I can do to help, I’ll continue to do.” Bill Hughes said after receiving the Sallie Busch Wheeler Award for distinguished service to equestrian sport at the 2014 Pegasus Awards.

Day in the Life
NICOLE RIVERA
With almost 200 events on the Kentucky Horse Park calendar each year, the state park’s Director of Special Events, Nicole Rivera, is an expert at managing the ins and outs of top-level events. She developed her love of horses when she became a seasonal employee of the campground in 1998. Assisting horse show managers, event planners, and entertainment experts, she provides direction with all show logistics from scheduling, stall preparation and turn-over, to helping plan spectator traffic flow for the busy Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by Land Rover. Rivera grants us a glimpse into a typically busy day in the life of an equestrian park event director.
[6:00am] After getting up, I make breakfast for my two kids Isabelle, 12-yearsold, and Alex, eight-years-old, and get them ready to go to school. After I’ve dropped them off at about 7am, I head into work where I first check my voicemails and emails to make sure there is nothing I need to take care of immediately. I have a great team who is often there before me and is already started on the daily tasks. [8:00am] I start stall counts of horses on the venue each day and review the schedule for the competitions or events going on to ensure our staff has everything covered, from knowing when arenas will need to be dragged to ensuring arena lights will be turned on in the evening for night classes. [Mid-morning] I check back with show managers and make rounds of the venue to ensure everything is running smoothly for them. Some days much of my job becomes problem management, so I try to stay on top of any issues that may arise. Often, if everything is going smoothly, I use this time to catch up on email. [Noon] Depending on what is going on, I grab lunch when I have time. We have various staff meetings throughout the week, as well as something during the event that may require my attention so I have to be flexible and adjusting all day.
[Late-afternoon/evenings] Depending on what is going on, we can have some busy long days. If a grand prix is going on in the evening or an event is run at night, I or one of my co-workers is there for the duration to make sure everything is running smoothly and to help the organizer. ■ Mark Coley 24 Equestrian March/April

S Above: Horse travel by trailer, van, truck, and plane is becoming all the more common Right: Having rest periods where horses can even offload and walk around for a bit can be very helpful when shipping long distances.

Shipping 101 There are some real basics, even if you’re only going to be shipping a few minutes away: 1. Vaccine Status: Make sure your vaccinations are up-todate. Ship your horses with their latest health records and a health certificate if required. Consult your veterinarian for interstate health certificate requirements. 2. Hydration: Consider their hydration status: How well are they hydrated? Have they been getting supplemental electrolytes? Answer these questions before you leave, as shipping even a short way can dehydrate your horse. 3. Stomach Issues: Studies show that travel stress can trigger gastric ulcers or other gastro-intestinal disruptions. Access to hay, preventative medication, and frequent feeding can all help a horse to ship without gastric repercussions. 4. Air Circulation: Minimizing dust in the box and the trailer is very important. Never close the trailer up tight as good ventilation is imperative.
usef.org
PHOTOS: USEF ARCHIVES
hipping and transport are some of the most potentially perilous activities facing a horse owner. Sickness, fatigue, and injury are all potential results of a bad shipping experience. As the parameters of equestrian sport expand, horses are traveling nationally and internationally on a regular basis. To discuss best shipping practices, we interviewed U.S. Dressage Team Veterinarian Dr. Rick Mitchell, who has advice for shipping overseas or locally.
Reducing Travel Stress The position of the horse in the box can affect the experience of traveling. Some horses prefer to face the direction that the transport is heading; some prefer to face the opposite direction. For difficult shippers, a box stall can be a panacea. They are able to move around during the trip, minimizing the feeling of being restricted and confined. Further, a horse in a box may drop its head to eat hay which reduces possible respiratory effects of shipping on cross ties. Rest periods where they can offload and walk around and overnight layovers can also be very helpful. Some veterinarians believe that supplemental Vitamin B or C can benefit a horse under significant stress. Early Diagnosis of Illness or Stress Lack of appetite, depression, lack of interest in water, restlessness in the box, and increased respiratory rate are all signs of stress and illness due to shipping. Temperature monitoring is an important factor in determining the health of your traveling horse. Take his temperature before you leave, during a long trip, and about an hour after his arrival. Check with your veterinarian if there is significant fluctuation in his body temperature.
Left: Dr. Rick Mitchell has traveled the world with the U.S. Dressage Team and many high profile equine athletes. Below: Monitoring your horse’s temperature and hydration status is extremely important.
Fitness Is Key for Travel Unfit horses do not ship long distances well. For some years, horses would be rested after the indoor shows and shipped unfit to the Florida circuit. In many cases, they arrived in Florida ill from the effects of the trip. Competitors learned that transporting a fit horse increased his chances of a successful trip south.
PHOTOS: SUSANJSTICKLE.COM, USEF ARCHIVES
Earning Frequent Flyer Miles Air travel is especially dehydrating, so again hydration status and supplemental electrolyte pastes are important. Some of the horses that don’t ship well may need to have pre-flight fluids and be examined post flight for hydration status. Stomach tubing with water and electrolytes can be very beneficial post flight and may be more effective than intravenous fluids. Protection: Shipping Wraps vs. Boots Method of application of a boot or wrap is important. If applied by an experienced groom or handler, a good shipping wrap is very helpful and keeps the horse from banging its legs and injuring itself. Shipping boots are great as long as they fit properly and don’t slip. With either a shipping wrap or boot, a good fit and secure application is really important. I do recommend using one or the other. ■ Helen Murray

BUCK DAVIDSON
PHOTO: ADAM BRENNAN PHOTOGRAPHY
CREATING HIS OWN LEGACY
From the Beginning Buck Davidson was bred to ride. The son of legendary Olympic eventing rider Bruce Davidson and grandson of iconic Master of Foxhounds Nancy Hannum, Buck was born into a world where horse and sport are paramount. As a child, spring vacations consisted of long car rides to Kentucky to watch his father compete at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, a competition that Bruce won an unmatched six times. His parents instilled the importance of hard work and competitive drive, values that have served Davidson well in all of his endeavors. Sports were a big part of Davidson’s young life. A great athlete, he played ice hockey, baseball, and soccer which he aspired to play in the major leagues until a knee injury sidelined him. Turning his attention toward horses, Davidson’s prodigious career began. “I always saw a lot of work in horses. Growing up I looked at Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson as sports legends, not my dad. My dad was just my dad and horses were what he did.” Riding at his first Rolex Kentucky at age 17, Davidson laughs as he recalls what a bad ride it was. “I didn’t realize how hard riding was and come to appreciate it until I

really started competing.” The challenges of national level eventing were met and mastered. Davidson was named Young Rider of the Year twice and in 1998 received the Lionel Guerrand-Hermes Trophy for horsemanship and sportsmanship from the USET Foundation. “One thing my parents always told me was as long as you are the in the top three in the country of whatever you want to do, you will be okay. If you want to pump gas, as long as you are working hard to be one of the top three people pumping gas in the country, you will be fine.” Named after his father Bruce, the nickname “Buck” was coined before he was born. At dinner one evening, “I was kicking around in my mom’s belly and they (his parents) were joking at how much I was bucking around,” said Davidson. “The name stuck.” Currently ranked as one of the top riders in the world, Davidson has an impressive resume, which includes numerous finishes as the highest-placed U.S. rider at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by Land Rover, representing the U.S. at Pan American and FEI World Equestrian Games, as well as being named an alternate for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic squads.

Behind the Scenes With a full barn of horses, Davidson may be one of the busiest riders at a show, sometimes having as many as 25 rides in a day. From his first ride of the day to the last, he makes sure to give each of his mounts the best chance to win. “I have to think about all of my horses going that weekend when I am walking a course or preparing for a phase. Each one will need a bit different of a ride.” In the spare moments when he is not competing, Davidson can be found coaching fellow riders. Always prompt
it all possible. Carl and Cassandra Segal have had a long and successful partnership with Davidson. They met at the Rolex Kentucky event in 2004, the year that Davidson would win the USET’s Pinnacle Trophy as the highest-placed U.S. rider with Mystic Mike. “Carl said he didn’t know anything about what was going on with the sport; he didn’t know who was good and who was bad, he just watched,” said Davidson. Both Carl and Cassandra were impressed with how the promising athlete carried himself at the event, a lesson
You get one chance to make an impression, and it “means the world to me that someone who didn’t even know me was impressed with how I handled myself. ” and prepared, one wonders how a busy rider accomplishes this level of organization. “The team I have behind me is so much better than anybody else’s. I know that I’m not better than anybody else, all I know is I have a better team. If we all do our jobs to the best of our ability, we all know that we will be successful,” said Davidson. Experienced grooms look after their specific string of horses, knowing every intricacy of each animal. You get one chance to make an impression, and it means the world to me that someone who didn’t even know me was impressed with how I handled myself.” The Segals have gone on to purchase many top horses for Davidson to campaign, including the U.S. Eventing Association’s highest-scoring horse of all time and current mount, Ballynoe Castle RM. Valuing their relationship as more of a close friendship, he explains, “I am just so lucky to have them as people in my life.”

WHAT WOULD THEY BE DOING? Growing up, Davidson dreamed of one day being a star athlete, but he thought it would be in a different sport, like hockey or baseball. Joking that if he wasn’t involved in the horse industry he would probably be on the streets, he added, “I just hope I don’t have to worry about that for a while.” We had him weigh in on what he thinks some of his fellow competitors would be doing if they weren’t riders.

Down Time Although much of his time is occupied with horses and the business, Davidson follows other sports and plays recreational golf and basketball. He recalls starting a game of pickup basketball with a group of kids at the Kentucky Horse Park Campground while staying there during the Rolex Kentucky event. “I would never tell anybody who I was and finally one kid asked. After I told him he went running away and came back with a big group of people. After that I scored a lot of points because nobody was going to get near me to touch me, nobody wanted to be the one that could possibly hurt me.” The year after he finished his show jumping round on My Boy Bobby and claimed the Rolex/USEF CCI4* National Championship, there was the group of kids with basketballs for him to sign. Davidson also enjoys helping a charity started by a friend called Fly Pups, an organization that transports dogs marked for euthanasia across the country to non-kill facilities, where they have a chance at being adopted. Helping some of the dogs get adopted even before they reach the non-kill shelter, the mission is important to Davidson. “It’s very expensive to make the trips to transport the dogs, so any assistance can go a long way in helping these dogs,” Davidson explained, as he endeavors to raise awareness about their plight. Looking forward, Davidson said there is still a lot he wants to accomplish in the sport. “What my dad did was so incredible. I can’t imagine what the feeling would be like to win at Kentucky, with Dad having the statue here and all.” As his training operation grows and exciting prospects develop, Davidson may reach his dream and stand alongside his father’s statue in victory.

Guests from eight- to 18-years-old of all nationalities stay in the Foley family home. Since their home is on-site at the stables, there is no need for guests to leave the estate. Married for over 25 years, Sue and Dan, with their three daughters, Ashley, Lydia and Alice, all active riders, excel at welcoming young visitors to their home to experience life on a busy, but beautiful working farm. Sue is Chief Instructor of the Clonshire Riding Centre and has been its driving force since its inception over 20 years ago. From small beginnings, she has built up the business from scratch to its current position as one of the most successful riding establishments in the country, holding its own on the world stage. Many of Clonshire’s horses have gone on to compete internationally for riders such as Olympic medal-winning eventers Mark Todd (New Zealand) and Karen Dixon (Great Britain). Aoife Clark also competed for Ireland at the London 2012 Olympics on a Clonshire horse. Having won numerous national riding awards, Sue is committed to education and training, and has developed a prestigious training program to enable riders to progress their skills for both pleasure and competitive riding. Dan specializes in bringing on young Irish Sport Horses suitable for amateur or professional riders. Justin and Libby Sautter, of Lexington, Ky., were first introduced to Clonshire Equestrian Centre through an equestrian vacation agency and participated in the adult holiday. “We stayed at the Dunraven Arms and the Foleys provided transportation to and from Clonshire every day,” said Libby. “The facilities were beautiful and we had a wonderful time.” While there, they were able to observe the dayto-day experiences of the children’s camps. They knew immediately that their daughters, Kate and Liza (ages 10 and eight, respectively, when they attended the camp), would love Clonshire. They

started looking into similar camps in the United States and discovered that the cost of Clonshire’s program was equal to those in the U.S. As an added bonus, they could vacation in Ireland and stay at Dunraven Arms again while the girls were attending the camp. One of the biggest benefits, in Justin’s opinion, was that Kate and Liza would be given a certain amount of freedom in relation to daily their responsibilities. “In their day-to-day lives, they have scheduled activities and we tell them where they need to be and what they need to do,” Justin noted. “At Clonshire, they had a schedule and chores that had to be done, but they were expected to get where they needed to be on their own. It was a great experience for them” “At first, I was a little concerned about that part,” Libby said. “I’m thinking about basic things

like, ‘Will they know when to go in for lunch? What if they don’t and they miss it?’ But it wasn’t like that at all. They were always supervised, but the instructors weren’t holding their hands. No one was going to let them miss a meal, but they had to be responsible for their schedules.” When asked if they liked that aspect of the camp, both Kate and Liza said it was one of their favorite parts of the experience. In fact, when asked what their least favorite part of camp was, Liza said, “When mom and dad came to visit and wanted to tell us what to do.” Kate, who is slightly more advanced than Liza because she’s two years older, enjoyed the opportunity to experience new and different courses. “I loved the cross-country course,” Kate said. “The jumps were fun, and there was a variety so you could pick which ones you were comfortable with.”

Liza’s favorite part of the camp was that she was allowed quite a bit of independence. “I actually really liked being able to take care of the horses. We mucked stalls, brushed and tacked the horses, and did barn chores every day. We spent so much time taking care of the horses that we really got to know them.” With the entire family having had such wonderful experiences at Clonshire, Libby hopes to return in the future. “I would love to go back. We all had such a great time and we’ve kept in touch with the Foleys since our last visit. I would highly recommend Clonshire for anyone looking for a fabulous equestrian vacation.” ■ Eileen Schnettler

A Visit to the Kentucky Horse Park
with Executive Director Jamie Link
W PHOTOS: COURTESY OF THE KENTUCKY HORSE PARK
hen former Kentucky Horse Park executive director John Nicholson announced his retirement in January 2014, Alston Kerr, chair of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission, and a search committee made up of business, tourism, and government leaders, began a search for the Horse Park’s new leader. Governor Steve Beshear’s deputy chief of staff, Jamie Link, stood out as a natural fit for the position. Link joined the Department of Parks in 1985 as a business manager, served as deputy executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park in 2006, and served as the chief executive officer for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2010 at the Kentucky Horse Park. He believes his experience in that role will prove to be very beneficial in his new endeavor. “I think that experience was invaluable to help me understand, to a great degree, the equestrian world. The ability to travel overseas was very special in that I got to see some different perspectives of horse sport, and also to appreciate its beauty and athleticism. In Kentucky, we’re so accustomed to thoroughbred racing, but there’s a whole different world of equestrian sport that is very special. I think it’s part of our mission, from a tourism angle, to expose people to that different aspect of horse sport.” Link would like to bring the FEI World Equestrian Games back to the Horse Park, and endeavors to position the Horse Park to win the bid for the event in the near future. “I think it’s a no-brainer. Over time it became designed to host events like the WEG and obviously we’ve proven we can do it in 2010. To my knowledge, the feedback from the competitors was A+; the footing, the facilities were world-class. From a logistical standpoint, the transportation and the operations of the park and the city of Lexington and central Kentucky proved that we can do this, and we can do it quite well. I’m hearing stories about other locations, and you can do it all essentially on one property instead of spread over great distances, which creates traveling and lodging issues and things of that nature. We can do it all right here. We did bid on 2018, but had a commercial issue that we couldn’t overcome. 2022 will be the next one and it will be my hope that the Commonwealth and the Horse Park will bid again.” While the FEI World Equestrian Games would certainly draw many to the Horse Park, Link has his sights set on growing tourism throughout the entire year. The Horse Park is home to many different equine breeds, and allows visitors to experience the sights and sounds of a working horse farm as they explore the grounds.

most comprehensive museum in the world dedicated to the history of horses and their impact on human civilization, is a place where new exhibits can give guests a different experience each time they visit. Through its ever-growing library and archives, it also serves as a resource for scholars and researchers throughout the world. Link is dedicated to keeping the Horse Park vibrant and attractive. He believes in innovation and keeping the programs and events fresh. “We have to be very conscious of staying fresh with the tourism experience. If you come to the Horse Park one year and we don’t update and change the tourism offering, then it becomes stale. We want to encourage families to visit us year after year to see the exciting new features we have to offer.” Along the lines of keeping the facilities up-to-date, the Horse Park has been exploring the idea of building a hotel on the property for quite some time, and Link hopes that it will come to fruition in the future. “We haven’t quite found the right situation, but I still believe it’s a very viable opportunity for two reasons: the economics of the Horse Park and the service of our guests. Guests would not only include horse show participants and tourists, but also the guests of our sister agencies within the National Horse Center. We have 32 agencies here at the Horse Park and in the winter months with the many annual meetings held in Lexington, a hotel could be a great benefit to have on site.” The economics and the business of the Horse Park are of utmost importance to Link in his list of goals.
The Horse Park hosts school and camp field trips year-round.

“We like to use the slogan, THE place to get close to horses, and it really is. A lot of people can drive down the road and see horses in a field, but at the Horse Park people can get close to the horses. They can ride a horse, pet a horse, and get their photo taken with a horse. They can see multiple breeds all in one place, sometimes in costume and character to symbolize their heritage and history. The museum has varied and changing exhibits that showcase the history of the horse, its relationship with man, and how our culture has evolved. It’s the full experience of being close to a horse.” The Horse Park includes an expansive modern campground, which offers a grocery store/gift shop, two bathhouses, tennis, basketball, volleyball courts, and a junior Olympic-size swimming pool. With tourists, competitors, and campers all using the Horse Park, one of the challenges of Link’s new role is addressing the needs of all three groups and keeping everyone happy. “It’s a balancing act. They’re somewhat separate groups, but there’s great synergy between the three groups because a lot of people who come here for horse shows are also camping here. I think there’s a great connection between the tourism, the shows, and the camping; they all complement one another.” The Horse Park plays a vital role in tourism for the entire state, and with that in mind, Link would like to look at new ways to improve upon an already attractive destination. The International Museum of the Horse, the largest and

“We have to make sure we have a sound business model. Even though we are a state agency, we’re effectively a business. We must manage expenses properly and generate revenues through hosting new events, bolstering the tourist trade, and enhancing educational opportunities.” One of the Horse Park’s current educational opportunities is the Civilian Equine Sensory Training Clinic held in September. National and international instructors provide training in obstacle, sensory, and equitation techniques. The clinic, grounded in natural horsemanship fundamentals, is done in-hand and under saddle. Training is conducted in a controlled environment geared to improving the confidence of both horse and rider. All breeds of horses and riding disciplines are welcome. While new events and education are key components to growth, Link’s overall vision for the Horse Park is multi-faceted. He strives to make it the finest in the world for equestrian competitors by upgrading facility standards for both humans and equines. He envisions an increased tourism trade through enhanced marketing and improved tourist experiences in both equine activities and campground quality. Thinking in innovative terms, Link is exploring expanding beyond equine attractions to events such as music, food, and fitness. “One of our greatest attributes is the beauty of the park, an aesthetic that few places can match. But we also have to be very conscious of avoiding conflict between non-equestrian and equestrian events. It’s very important that we find ways for these events to complement one another.” usef.org
Link would like visitors to leave the Horse Park having had great experiences at the facilities. “If they’re here to show, I hope they had a safe and great show – the footing was great, the stabling was great, and the services they needed were here. We hope it was easy to get here and they had an overall superb show experience. For the tourists, I would like for them to drive out of our front gate and say, ‘That was a great day for me and my family. We saw and learned a lot.’” Link sees a bright future for the Kentucky Horse Park, and is committed to its success in the future. ■ Eileen Schnettler

L.V. Harkness Lamon Vanderburg Harkness had a passion for the finest things in life: silver, crystal, boats, and horses. In 1869, at 19 years of age and with a $500 stake from his father, L.V. began his career in land and cattle. He would later become a large shareholder in the Standard Oil Company, a venture co-founded by his father. In 1891, pursuing a life passion, L.V. purchased Walnut Hall Stock Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. His keen eye and uncompromising tastes transformed Walnut Hall into the foremost standardbred breeding and racing establishment in the world. While working to improve the standardbred breed, L.V. was also involved with sailing around the world on his yacht searching for and acquiring fine objects to adorn his homes. Today his great-granddaughter, Meg Jewett-Leavitt, shares his love of standardbreds, objects d’art, and his spirit of adventure. Like her progenitor, Meg enjoys traveling the globe seeking the unusual “wants” and unique “must haves” that add so much spice to life. My first pony was named "Cash and Carry ," a great jumping pony that was passed down through my siblings. He was just one of the horses that prepared me for the experience I've had with Brunello. I know that nutrition has a lot to do with how Brunello performs. I believe in a simple, but powerful diet to fuel healthy cells, which is why I choose Platinum. I also give the horses Platinum Balance because the better Brunello's stomach feels, the higher he jumps! If I wasn't a Hunter rider, I would be a nutritionist because you are what you eat.
