Brief Summary (For Full Prescribing Information, see package insert) CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. DESCRIPTION: Clodronate disodium is a non-amino, chloro-containing bisphosphonate. Chemically, clodronate disodium is (dichloromethylene) diphosphonic acid disodium salt and is manufactured from the tetrahydrate form. INDICATION: For the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses.

Osphos inhibits bone resorption by binding to calcium phosphate crystals (inhibiting their formation and dissolution), and by exerting direct cellular effects on osteoclasts. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive OSPHOS. WARNINGS: Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. HUMAN WARNINGS: Not for human use. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure. PRECAUTIONS: As a class, bisphosphonates may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. Sensitivity to drug associated adverse reactions varies with the individual patient. Renal and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may be associated with plasma concentrations of the drug. Bisphosphonates are excreted by the kidney; therefore, conditions causing renal impairment may increase plasma bisphosphonate concentrations resulting in an increased risk for adverse reactions. Concurrent administration of other potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be approached with caution and renal function should be monitored. Use of bisphosphonates in patients with conditions or diseases affecting renal function is not recommended. Administration of bisphosphonates has been associated with abdominal pain (colic), discomfort, and agitation in horses. Clinical signs usually occur shortly after drug administration and may be associated with alterations in intestinal motility. In horses treated with OSPHOS these clinical signs usually began within 2 hours of treatment. Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration of OSPHOS. Bisphosphonates affect plasma concentrations of some minerals and electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, immediately post-treatment, with effects lasting up to several hours. Caution should be used when administering bisphosphonates to horses with conditions affecting mineral or electrolyte homeostasis (e.g. hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, hypocalcemia, etc.). The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age. The effect of bisphosphonates on the skeleton of growing horses has not been studied; however, bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity which impacts bone turnover and may affect bone growth. Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding. The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in breeding horses or pregnant or lactating mares. Bisphosphonates are incorporated into the bone matrix, from where they are gradually released over periods of months to years. The extent of bisphosphonate incorporation into adult bone, and hence, the amount available for release back into the systemic circulation, is directly related to the total dose and duration of bisphosphonate use. Bisphosphonates have been shown to cause fetal developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals. The uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone may be greater than into maternal bone creating a possible risk for skeletal or other abnormalities in the fetus. Many drugs, including bisphosphonates, may be excreted in milk and may be absorbed by nursing animals. Increased bone fragility has been observed in animals treated with bisphosphonates at high doses or for long periods of time. Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption and decrease bone turnover which may lead to an inability to repair micro damage within the bone. In humans, atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients on long term bisphosphonate therapy; however, a causal relationship has not been established. ADVERSE REACTIONS: The most common adverse reactions reported in the field study were clinical signs of discomfort or nervousness, colic and/or pawing. Other signs reported were lip licking, yawning, head shaking, injection site swelling, and hives/pruritus.

FEI President Welcome to the Kentucky Horse Park for the FEI North American Combined Championships for Juniors and Young Riders 2015 which, this year, adds Para-Equestrian Dressage to its already extensive programme of events. It’s certainly going to be an action-packed week with all the up-andcoming Dressage, Endurance, Eventing, Jumping, Para-Equestrian Dressage and Reining athletes chasing down those coveted medals in each category. The expansion of this fixture since it was first staged in 1974 as an Eventing challenge between the USA and Canada has been something of a phenomenon. The Dressage Championship was added in 1981 and Jumping joined in 1982, the year the first complete Young Riders Championship was staged in British Columbia, Canada. Juniors joined the ranks in 2006 and Reining was added to the programme in 2008, with Endurance following three years later. Last year’s 40th anniversary Championships attracted 216 young athletes from five countries, and we can expect an even greater number now that Para-Dressage has also been embraced. Whatever your discipline, I hope this week of sporting endeavour provides a defining moment in your career, whether that takes the shape of a steep learning curve that helps you build towards your sporting and personal future, or a highly successful occasion you will treasure for the rest of your life. One thing is for sure, this fantastic venue is an exceptional equestrian venue with world-class facilities and a wealth of organisational talent, and you are very fortunate to have the opportunity to compete in such an ideal environment. Not all young people get the same opportunities in life, but the FEI is dedicated to introducing as many as possible to our sports through the FEI Solidarity programme. And we are very aware that we need to maximise the engagement of a youth audience who will follow our sport and support it into the future. You can play your part in making that happen by establishing your own code of ethics that demonstrates your respect for officials, fellow-competitors, your family and supporters and, of course, your sporting partner, your horse. USEF Welcome to the 41st Anniversary of the Adequan/FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North. The United States Equestrian Federation is proud to be a part of this premier equestrian competition in North America. Young equestrians gather from all parts of the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico to vie for team and individual FEI medals in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing, as well as the FEI World Equestrian Games disciplines of endurance, Reining, and for the first time ever the sport of Para-Dressage. The world-class venue at the Kentucky Horse Park will serve as the event’s stage for the sixth consecutive year in 2015. These championships are vitally important to the development of the riders ages 14 to 21 who will likely go on to represent their countries in future international competitions. It is our privilege to present these riders with the opportunity to showcase their talents at an international championship, many of whom will be experiencing this level of competition for the first time. It would not be possible to host these championships without our sponsors and supporters, and we are extremely grateful to them for their continued support. Only through their generosity and valuable contributions are we able to present this special event for the future generation of top international riders. As I am sure you know, the Kentucky Horse Park has played host to countless world-class equestrian championships and events over the past 37 years, including the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and the annual, four-star Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. But the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships are very special to us and we are excited to host you again this year and look forward to having you back in the future. While here, we hope that you, your families, and your friends will take advantage of all we have to offer at the park. The
History The NAJYRC began in 1974 as an eventing challenge between the United States and Canada. The inaugural event was called the North American Junior Team Championships and was held in Jokers Hill, Ontario. In 1981, a dressage championship was added, and the event obtained FEI recognition. Jumping was added in 1982, producing the first full championships, held in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. During the mid-1980s the
competition
was
referred to as the Continental Championships. In 1985, the championships landed at Martha Simpson
and Linda Buonanno’s Tempel Farm for the first time. Known as the “father of the NAJYRC,” Howard Simpson and wife Martha graciously hosted the event at Tempel Farm 14 times, more than any other venue in the championship’s 40-year history. The Championships were officially named the North American Young Riders Championships in 1988. The Championships were expanded to officially include a Junior Championship in 2006. The discipline of reining was added to the official schedule in 2008. In 2011 the discipline of endurance was also added. This year we are pleased to welcome Para-Dressage for the first time at the event.

Code of Conduct FOR THE WELFARE OF THE HORSE The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.

At all stages during the preparation and training of competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. This includes good horse management, training methods, farriery and tack and transportation.

Horses and athletes must be fit, competent and in good health before they are allowed to compete. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or safety, pregnancy in mares and the misuse of aids.

Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions, stabling, site safety and fitness of the horse for onward travel after the event.

Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed, and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.

The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas of expertise.

Jumping Jumping is one the most exhilarating and testing disciplines that equestrian sport offers. In these competitions, horse and rider must demonstrate skill, speed and

Reining Reining is designed to show the athletic ability of ranch-type horse in the confines of a show arena. In competition, contestants are required to run one of 10

Each horse automatically begins the required pattern with a score of 70 and ½, 1 or 1 ½ points are given or taken away for each maneuver. Endurance Endurance riding varies in distance of 50 to 100 miles. This event tests both the rider’s horsemanship and their knowledge of their horse. The riders go out on

“loops” that range from 10 to 25 miles of cross-country terrain, often including

natural obstacles such as creeks, ditches and forests. At the end of every loop,

horses must complete and pass a vet check. In order to continue, horses must reach a pulse criterion of between 60-68 beats per minute and pass an examination for hydration, gut sounds, lameness, metabolics and overall appearance. The horse and rider then get a rest period, between 30-60 minutes, and continue on their next loop. This is the fifth year that endurance will be included as a championship event at the NAJYRC, Junior and Young Riders will all compete in a CEI4*. The 75mile race will run on Friday and Best Conditioned Horse judging will take place on Saturday.

In the cross-country phase, the same horse and rider pair gallop over miles of varying terrain, jumping an array of obstacles including banks, ditches, water and combinations. On the final day, competitors return to the ring for the jumping test where they must demonstrate their agility and technique by leaving the rails up. At NAJYRC, the eventing competition is split into Junior and Young Rider sections. In the Junior division, competitors ranging from 14-18 years old will compete at the International One-Star Level (CCI*). While the Young Riders, varying in age from 16-21, will contest an International Two-Star event (CCI2*).

Para-Equestrian sport includes all equestrian disciplines practiced by people with physical disabilities, with “Para” meaning parallel to able-bodied equestrian sports. Many disabled athletes are very competitive in divisions designed for the able-bodied, but Para-Equestrian opens the world of competition to riders and drivers with severe disabilities. As well, allowing them to compete in a serious and focused environment. This is the first year that para-dressage will be part of the NAJYRC.
